when we're talking about starting positions.

i'll give you they both rock the story motif's though lupe's a better story teller which is probably where kendrick gets the edge in the overall, because it's not that he's a story teller, its that he's a spitter that told a story. lupe is a story teller that can spit. and when he's not telling a story it's easy to lose interest in him.

You got two or three good albums out of mainstream artist, that's pretty much a win. Everything after that is gravy.

I agree completely

as much as lupe has dissapointed me with the past 2 albums

nowindays do people really expect a "mainstream" rapper to have more than 2 quality albums

though this is not me saying that people shouldn't be dissapointed or w/e

These days (like, say, post-2000) mainstream artists that accomplish more than three dope albums are exceptions rather than rules.

Grabbed a big cosign or two (Kanye, Jay-Z, etc)
He can really rap, even shit rappers like soulja boy / waka revered his "rapping" ability and had to disassociate themselves from that type of music.
He's a good songwriter
etc etc

the story is simular to kendrick... kendrick is nearly swaggless as well but makes more interesting/compelling music.

Lupe annoys us because he doesn't act like a typical
rapper.

He acts like a person who happens to rap.

If he doesn't like the president (for great reasons, btw),
he's going to say it.

Hipsters call that "pretentious."

Kendrick Lamar doesn't do that, and has gained from it.
He's fine just being a rapper.

And its not just the message. Its the flow, the delivery,
the concept, everything.

Its just a great, great, great, display of lyrical ability.

There isn't anyone in rap that has that in them. Sorry, its
true.

Instead of focusing on the brilliance of the song
he JUST came out with, you bitch about how his
OLDER material isn't as good as the song he JUST
came out with.

LOL @ the Lesson

That song is the best display of lyricism of 2013, by far,
and is far, far, far better lyrically than anything on
GDMC

Its true.

Lupe is a class above KL.

And KL is very, very, very, good.

He's a blabbermouth wordplay rapper, and a good one.

None of Lupe's gifts, though.

posts whenever someone doesn't have an opinion that DOESN'T run with your agenda

You could literally say this in every post where someone says something similar

OMG THE PEOPLE IN THE PUSHA T POST ARE SAYING THAT HIS NEW SONG IS BETTER THAN HIS RECENT STUFF AND CRITICISING HIS RECENT STUFF

Well, thats called an opinion man, not everyone has the same one

As a fan, why can't I be dissapointed that Lupe's music doesn't sound as good as that song on a regular basis anymore? Is it really that hard to comprehend that there are people that haven't opened up their own Lupe church?

Really?

And there are songs on GKMC that I like better than this and songs from 2013 that I like better than this, which is another opinion I have that will inevitably force you to reply with another one of your predicable lines about the lesson, which although sometimes you make good points and good posts, other times it sounds like you are just mad because not everyone has the same opinion on Lupe's work in general as you

>As a fan, why can't I be dissapointed that Lupe's music
>doesn't sound as good as that song on a regular basis anymore?

This is called being a stupid lessonhead.

You could praise the song. You could break down what's brilliant
about it. You could dissect his good stuff.

For example: search the "Bitch Bad" thread.

Now search the "Jonylah Forever" thread.

Difference? Lessonheads whined, cried, nitpicked Bitch Bad
to absolute death (none of the criticisms ultimately make
any sense)

In the Jonylah song, Lessonheads simply said "Wow, this is good."

No discussion.

Why? Because Lessonheads have more fun talking BAD about Lupe
than they do praising him.

Its one of the most pathetic internet crusades I've ever seen
and the Lesson NEVER lets up on it.

Be FAIR.

The Jonlyah song is amazing. Instead of saying as much YOU
BITCHED ABOUT HOW THE REST OF HIS CATALOGUE isn't that great.

Its pathetic and you should be ashamed of yourself.

You're a young chap, and I sense good in you. I think you need
to stop hanging around these parts, because you are becoming a
standard Lesson dumbass, bereft of good opinions on anything.

I might have to take you under my wing, so that you learn to see
the light. This is why I Orbit, son.

because the bad is more recent than the good and comes more often than the good in terms of lupe's last few years man

I give a fuck about nothing about Lupe except for his music, which I, for the most part, haven't liked recently

no one has an agenda against lupe

this isn't complicated, this is just you having problems dealing with the fact people on the internet have opinions

I do not think "Bitch Bad" is a good song. Most of the songs on that album....are not good songs imo. But yes the other song you mentioned BANGS and has since it came out

but to you that makes me a hipster right, because my opinion is unvalid unless it lines up with yours, you use words like this to label people you dont even KNOW. You probably truly believe that its impossible just to NOT like Lupe's recent catalog don't you....well whatever man, you can continue bumping lasers and his newest shit if you want, because thats your decision/opinion

If you are actually older than me(I'm 21) the way you post is ridiculosly immature. You actually lose it when you see people thinking different than you

I can't even take you seriously after that Tyler The Creator thread, where you called his album. Classic then it somehow "aged horribly" before the week had even ended

When it comes to allot of things you are insufferable, but when Lupe is in the picture, you really are the worst. Its not even like I'm hating on Lupe, I'm literally just stating my opinion lmao. I am defending dude in other parts of this post man

that was a bad typo; I meant to say the GOOD has NOT come more often than the BAD recently for Lupe

many people think his last mixtape sucked and his last two albums were not good. You don't and thats cool. I respect that

But to argue that it's eons better than Kendrick's "Real" or the song "m.A.A.d city" (especially last verse) is crazy.

They are both rare MC's from a talent/potential perspective but one makes better records, thats the point of the thread.

Is Kendrick the artist that either of them are trying
to be?

Oh, ok.

Because Kendrick vs. Lupe is false equivalency, a bad
comparison, whatever mumbo jumbo you want to use.

They are two different rappers in two different niches
with two different styles.

That Lupe just released a song that melts anything Kendrick
has ever done lyrically kind of proves the point -- Kendrick
is not making any crazy creative, uber-insightful double
entrendre-ridden songs about black on black violence that
utilize voice, metaphor, and pacing the way Lupe is able to. Not
in Kendrick's skillet. Not in any rapper's skillset, really.

And Lupe is not going to ever release no "Bitch don't kill
my vibe" kind of songs. Not in his lane. He might make his
version of "commercial" music, but its not in the same lane
as Kendrick's.

This is a Lupe hate thread, and that's it. Its nothing
else. Glad I was hear to expose it as such.

yes, i too believe that Orbit is potentially "Dying of Thirst"

Tired of running, tired of hunting
My own kind, but retiring nothing
Tires are steady screeching, the driver is rubbing
Hands on the wheel, who said we wasn't
Dying of thirst, dying of thirst, dying of thirst

Dope on the corner, look at the coroner
Daughter is dead, mother is mourning her
Strayed bullets, AK bullets
Resuscitation was waiting patiently but they couldn't
Bring her back, who got the footage?
Channel 9, cameras is looking
It's hard to channel your energy when you know you're crooked
Banana clip, split his banana pudding
I'm like Tre, that's Cuba Gooding
I know I'm good at
Dying of thirst, dying of thirst, dying of thirst

How many sins? I'm running out
How many sins? I lost count
Dreams of ballin' like Spalding
But only shotty bounce
The reaper calling, I'm cottonmouth
Money is power, yours is ours
Lay with a snitch, die with a coward
Hope we get rich, hope we can tower
Over the city with vanity with the music louder
The same song
A black flower
I'll show you how to
Dye your thirst
Dye your thirst
Dye your thirst

What are we doing? Who are we fooling?
Hell is hot, fire is proven
To burn for eternity, return of the student
That never learned how to live righteous but how to shoot it
Tired of running, choirs is humming
Tell us to visit, we lying about coming
Now back to business, loading the guns in
Back of the Buick, your hood is feuding,
And the beef is bubbling
It's no discussion, hereditary
All of my cousins
Dying of thirst
Dying of thirst
Dying of thirst

Too many sins
I'm running out
Somebody send
Me a well for the drought
See, all I know, is taking notes
On taking this life for granted
Granted, if he provoke
My best days, I stress days (Lord forgive me for all my sins for I not know...)
My best days, I stress days
Say "Fuck the world," my sex slave
Money, pussy and greed; what's my next crave
Whatever it is, know it's my next grave
Tired of running, tired of running
Tired of tumbling, tired of running
Tired of tumbling
Back once my momma say
"See a pastor, give me a promise
What if today was the rapture, and you completely tarnished
The truth will set you free, so to me be completely honest
You dying of thirst
You dying of thirst
So hop in that water, and pray that it works"

Lupe Escobar? not gonna happen

Jay and Nas have both made a ton of songs i could never see Lupe or Kendrick making.

Lupe on the other hand has tried to go completely alternative knowing he cant go the coke rapper route. I hope it works for him. Maybe he'll be able to pull a black eyed peas one day but that would be a waste of his talent.

Being not as good as Lupe does not a bad rapper make.

Kendrick is a great blabby mouth wordplay spitter. He's
got great sensibilities and attitude, makes friends with
the right people and all that. A cipher rapper.

Lupe is capable of spitting things that are just a tier
above anything anyone else is spitting, that one-in-a-generation
talent. I don't expect the Lesson to admit it, because Lupe's
enemy demographic are lessonhead types.

Kendrick is a good rapper who occasionally campaigns as a
cool person.

Lupe is a real person who happens to be better at rhyming
than anyone on earth. Its just something he does. This is
why he's mentioning drones back in 2008 and everyone is
like "who does he think he is?" 5 years later, everyone is
talking about drones. He's just ahead of his time in that
way, and it annoys hipsters, because hipsters tend to like
when rappers know their place.

u got the wrong guy.

i have said these guys are pretty much even in terms of ability & potential. However, Kendrick makes more interesting music, period. He just dropped an album Lupe would loved to have made; i'm sure Lupe would admit this himself.

I dont dislike Lupe, that SLR response to souljah-boy was one of the dopest straight-spitting tracks i heard in a min. But u still feel like your listening to a cornball, although Lupe prolly is a cool fella. Not all cool niggas sound cool on records... that's life.

I've listen to Kendrick's album once. He's just not as interesting as Lupe.

Not even as talented an M.C. as Lupe.

Kendrick raps well though, just doesn't have much to say.

Kendrick might be what y'all niggaz wanted Wale to be though.

You think Lupe is more substantive, fine. I'd actually agree with you. But saying Kendrick is a wordplay blabberer just isn't true when the entire buzz about GKMC is how conceptually thorough it is. Just doesn't make any sense.

In response to Reply # 88

I'm asking because whether you like his music or not, Kendrick Lamar is one of the more substantive rappers out there right now, especially in the major label aspect. "Swimming Pools," "Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst," "good kid," "Real" - and those are just the songs from GKMC that are more overtly substantial, not the ones that *need* context of the album to boost that substance.

You don't feel it or enjoy it, I get that. But saying that he isn't saying anything? That doesn't make sense.

I get that he's saying more than your regular mc on a major, it still just doesn't land with me.

I also saw him live at the Brooklyn Hip Hop festival a few years ago. Wasn't feeling that either.

I might give that joint another spin though. I got his earlier shit too, just never listened to it after not feeling GKMC.

What you said above is that you weren't feeling it. "I don't like this" is different from "He doesn't have much to say."

I don't like Lupe's newer material, but arguing "Lupe doesn't have much to say" wouldn't be accurate, nahmean?

I'll take the 5, 10, or 20 best Lupe songs over the 5, 10, 20 best Kendrick songs

And agree with Orbit, "Jonylah Forever" is much more powerful, and just better song to me than "Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe" or whatever anyone considers the best song on GKMC to be.

Or rather, isn't that what's wrong with Lupe Fiasco in 2013? There is no doubt the talent is still there, Lupe has shown himself to be as sharp as ever when called upon if we're talking the best of the best on the lyrical tip.

However, his projects these last few years, and really since The Cool, have been hit and miss. Kendrick has three strong projects in a row!

Lupe's highs are higher than Kendrick's perhaps, and are among the best in rap music, however, on a album/project basis, Kendrick undeniably has the crown. Since the dawn of the new decade, who else is there?

Mix tapes and Internet singles are like regular season games or scoring titles. They're fun in the moment, but they're not what ultimately defines an artist's (slash baller's) legacy.

You're indirectly watering down the importance of full albums in an effort to defend Lupe's shoddy full length LP output.

Illmatic > Dedication 2
Blackstar > Good Mob Soul Food 4

I could do that forever and you could too.

The point is that the albums matter more than anything else and Kendrick's one album is better than any of Lupe's four.

It said "Kendrick is the artist that Lupe was supposed to be."

That is horrifyingly wrong.

Instead of just admitting that, you tried to shift the
goalposts to "who has the better commercial singles."

That has nothing to do with the conversation, and is only
brought up because you're too much of a pussy to admit that
the OG post point (and most tangential points for that matter)
are dumb and wrong.

I think a better way of phrasing the post would have been "Kendrick succeeds at making the type of albums that Lupe tries and fails to make." That he's a better pop star than Lupe is immaterial ultimately.

Also, you really need to develop a thicker skin if you're going to keep posting here. Fully commit this troll character and don't pout whenever somebody on the Lesson yanks your skirt up and exposes your clitoris.

You should definitely get out there though. All you need to change your luck around is some sunlight, a copy of Our Bodies Ourselves and a girl with severe learning disabilities.

Lamar.

I'd offer you a hug, but now I have to pass on that.

in a reply to an exchange that didn't involve you 9 DAYS AFTER THE FACT? I post a good amount. Why are you searching my screenname looking for a thread to pick a fight with me? There's a thread on the first page where I defend Riff Raff for God's sake.

Nobody makes you look stupid around here but yourself.

Go lay down and think about that for a while.

which is some bullshit, because a lot of them have no physical footprint. doubly bullshit, because major labels won't/can't bankroll authentic artistic expression in this genre.

I'm mostly speaking of a phenomenon that culminated w/Drake

mixtapes of old, where mofos just basically rapped over the instrumentals of existing songs, or some random-ass bullshit with no direction... passe.

is an album only an album because of a major label stamp of approval?
Even if all the songs on a "mixtape" are original compositions?

to me, they are equal bodies of work. Especially considering that the "mixtapes" are often catered to the core fans.

As a matter of fact, lets call traditional albums DEMOS to the uninitiated public.

But you do kind of have a point with mixtapes often being pushed toward the more die hard fans.

If you're doing all that, you kind of have to count Lupe's mixtapes too. And I think that if you include Lupe's mixtapes, then Lupe Fiasco is kind of the artist that Lupe Fiasco was meant to be.

i think you might be right, at least in a way. kendrick's got the major backing with critical cosigns, he's far less polarizing, he's got the youth vote, he's an incredibly dope emcee with a lot to say about his ecology/how it impacts his life and the people around him, he can black the fuck out a la "...detox"...he's basically a level-minded hip-hop head's ultimate artist.

lupe seemed to have most of kendrick's situation on deck like you mention, but his star fell faster. maybe he was too transparent; i feel like a lot of more visible rappers would deter people if they spoke their less popular opinions/less-shared experiences. but as a rapper, lupe dropped numerous high-level, maybe classic projects (fnf i & ii, og food & liquor, the cool), and has at least a few gems on every release post-"the cool" (okay, maybe 'lasers' only has one).

that said, some recent lupe material isn't as awesome as recent kendrick material. but remember, 'section.80' is pretty much kendrick's 'food & liquor 2'; it's got incredible highs, but the lows (i.e. overglossy production/hooks on a few tracks) kind of ruins some songs. kendrick's also got a couple misfires on each of his mixtapes, too.

as far as how media/hip-hop heads treat kendrick, i agree he's the artist lupe should've been/we maybe hoped he'd be. but as individual artists, i think they're both where they can be expected to be.

And he called the president out about it, which is really
what did him in.

If Kendrick starts talking bad about the president, he'll
suffer the same fate

Sad, but true

>
>if the music is fire it's fire.

Lupe has the best song of 2013. I don't see anyone talking
about it.

Why?

Because Lupe Fiasco talked about drones and criticized
the president and is "arrogant" and a "know-it-all."

>Tupac used to take shots at Bill Clinton all the time and he
>was equally if not more loved than Obama is.

LOL -- that is factually false. Clinton got 83 and 84% of
the black vote in 92 and 96, respectively. Obama got ten
whole percentage points higher. And Obama's percentage
of the 18-29 vote was almost TWENTY percentage points higher
than Clinton.

Obama is the brown and young people's president, this is a
fact. The exact demographic that listens to Hip-Hop turned
out for him in record numbers (percentage too).

Lupe talking bad about him was costly to his career.

Thing is, Lupe was right: 4-5 years later the major media
decided to start talking about drones. His biggest problem
is being ahead of his time.

i had no knowledge of any of that until this post... i do know lupe has made some anti-political and possibly anti-obama statements but that didnt stop me from putting SLR or a couple other songs in my car. Only dorks on Okayplayer care about shit like that. If anything, political statements like that increase an artist's cult following. Perhaps you're of that category, Wyatt.

So all this "its all about his musical output" is a
lie.

People aren't talking about it because they don't want
to admit it.

Look at that post: niggas are in there like "this song
is good, but I wish he'd made more like this."

So instead of talking about the ACTUAL SONG niggas are
in there using it as fodder to HATE EVEN MORE. Proves my
point -- very little of Lupe critique is about his music.
Its about him being a "know-it-all" who is "arrogant" and
"thinks he knows more than he knows" or, my favorite:
"he's a fake intellectual." <--bwahahaha

Show me a better song, lyrically, than Jonylah Forever
in 2013. A song HALF as good. Nobody can. He's a better
lyricist than just about anyone in the game. People don't
like him because he talked bad about their president and
doesn't seem to give a shit about what everyone else thinks.

Kendrick is the opposite. Rocks no boats, is always gracious
and GOOD for him.

But that is the main difference between them. Has nothing
to do with music.

Because almost nobody believes that verse for verse Kendrick
is better than Lupe. If you believe that, you're simply a liar
or were employed by the Obama campaign.

Just because ur a rabid Lupe fan-boy and think he's made the best (lyrical) song of 2013 (read: which is a very subjective statement) doesnt mean the other 50 people in this thread have to agree with you.

you need some pussy.

and i guarantee you... 90% of the historic Lupe fanbase dont give two shits about his political ranting. If he had made threats at Obama you'd have a point. Let it go fam

The idea that Kendrick Lamar is the artist that Lupe
is supposed to be.

>you need some pussy.

It's like you only focus on the part of the argument that props up your own. Yes, some people diss Lupe about his demeanor, or about his interviews and Twitter rants. That much is true - I acknowledge it.

But his music has gotten worse. You never/rarely talk about how his beats and his choruses got TERRIBLY worse to a lot of people with Lasers and F&L2, and you never talk about how Food & Liquor and The Cool are just at an entirely different height of quality than Lasers and F&L2. His lyrics have remained at a high level, but every other element of his music has depleted. I've seen these things said a lot in The Lesson, too.

Why don't you ever address those latter points? Is it because the non-music points are just easier to talk about for you, while the production/choruses are more difficult to defend?
