...what we want is hard body lyrics from one of the top ten MC's in history that actually got creative with that hardcore/thug type subject matter. When I say creative I mean with the storytelling, word play, concepts, slick rhymes, and the ability to set that grimy tone, all with hard beats to match. P just seems like he has nothing to say anymore, he done bodied so many brothers on tracks over the years, that there is very little room to tell such stories creatively anymore. It's the Mobb's own fault, they painted themselves into a corner with their hard rock talk, now it just sounds like "threatening statements over instrumentals" (like someone said above). Unlike some of Hav and P's contemporaries, Nas, Ghost, Rae, who were able to at least diversify their subject matter a little, the Mobb just never could do that successfully...Guess heads like me just have to appreciate their greatness while it lasted and if they drop a banger here and there, it's cool...

just for my own information I'm wondering where are we finding these leaked albums nowadays. I think Google is downranking the blogs I usually find the music at because they get so many takedown notices.

i'll give it a few more spins but as of right now this is easily the best hiphop record i've heard since GKMC

there he go.. wtf, pickin' up his kid from the school bus/
now how shall I proceed? do the nigga dirty right in front of his seed?/
so the little '_____' will grow up traumatized to witness how ugly life can be, it is what it is/
they walkin' up the way holding hands, i drove ahead of them and got out for the ambush/
there's no thinkin' twice the dark skinned nigga turned white, before that first shot knocked out his lights/

im not sure what some of you in here are expecting from Prodigy...

hard rhymes/threats (what he's been doing since day 1) over sinister/ominous production from the best producer in the game today...(yep)

that beat for bear meat...wow.

i could do without the wack action bronson cameo tho.

solid 8.0 in my book...purchased.

because he's not spitting over something you can hear Ghost on.

"Heel Toe" or "Bird On A Wire" are just dope records.

On Alchemist or something Wu-like (the Legendary Weapons Wu-Chamber Music album) is when it sounds more obvious.

Vocal tone is unavoidable flow-wise he's more indebted to Pun & lyrically he's more G. Rapp but with food/wrestling references.

Got to go with the "Alchemist = A / Prodigy = C-" call from above. I'm not a massive Mobb Deep fan at the best of times, although the second album was great (obviously). Alchemist kills the beats on this, smacks it. Not sure if it's going to be played as much as Rare Chandeliers though, just cos Prodigy is quite one-note for my taste. He does it well, I'm sure, but not to my taste.

People just tend to settle I guess...throw on the old Mobb ish, and listen to P's intensity/viciousness in each line, then play this new ish, and it's not even close...that said, I dig some of the tracks (RIP, Death Sentence, and a couple more), but to say P is smashing these beats like he use to...no way...

real quick... Now, I DO actually think very high of Alchemist as a beatmaker/producer -

Countless classic cuts (what moved me the most gotta be the Mobb and the Dilated joints a while back)
BUT...

Im simply not feelin his output as of late, from the Gangrene stuff, over Russian... over Chandeliers to this -
Theres somethin missin.

In my mind he strayed from the formula, which made me dig his output so much in the 2k to 2k10´ish.

I DO understand the need to switch up, do different, evolve whatever...
To me it just feels like he abandoned, left somethin great behind that still had much potential in itself!!!

Still dope on here, just not the kind i was hopin for.

it's mostly the lack of hard-hitting drums. listen to older alc beats circa 98-2003 and the drums were far more pronounced. same thing happened w/ both madlib & dilla. madlib's drums on unseen are incredible, now he barely uses drums at all. kanye too. the list goes on..

huffy raps on niggas....this shit here is well thought-out, its just not
COMPLICATED

And those beats?

Nah...nah...I'm FUCKING with this

And Alchemist-produced shit be fading to me, something about his projects
don't seem to have a lot of soul...they sound good, but only superficially
(not hating AT ALL, I fuck with Alch)

It's like he's trying to be ecclectic within his own sound, which is great, but these aren't Al beats. They're more like musical cues in a movie and hearing one or two hear and again is all good.

It's an entire album though, and it gets incredibly boring pretty quickly.

Digging both the beats and the rhymes. This is the most I've felt P on the mic, since, like, probably "Murda Muzik." And Alc has been in a zone these days, so I'm not surprised he's held up his end of the deal.

Damn, both P and Havock have released solid albums this year. Now may well to be the right time to record and drop a new Mobb collabo. Strike while the iron is hot.

Madlib owns the loop/drumless beat/soundscape thing.I'm talking about how Alchemist is winning with the same formula.I'm sure they're good friends and could care less.

I've said many times on this board that Madlib is a national treasure and should be locked up and protected.

dude is on some of his grimy NY style of rap on this album, and that's cool

I'm saying I'd like to hear him doing more joints like he had on HNIC 2 and Product of the 80s - this album seems to be more in line with Mobb Deep's style as opposed to some of his recent solo output.

As I said before, this album is cool and theres a lot of dope music - I just expected something different with the way he was promoting it.

In response to Reply # 53

I love that joint, probably my favorite on Product of the 80's, that spacey sound with his modern-day flow & stream-of-conscience paranoia is a winner.

However this Alc-helmed grizzled-vet, lived-in grimy street style is his lane too.

P can do both these days.

This is definitely his most focused, consistent project since he got out of jail.

Obviously Alchemist has a lot to do with that, he's just on fire lately, however P is Alc's first/still-best rapper outlet.

This ain't sending a manager some tracks & overdubbing vocals.

It's the album that a legitimate musical duo who know each other well on a human/friend/family level can make.

I've been on a Prodigy kick all week, listening to the audiobook version of his autobiography at work & then bumping this album or choice old Mobb/solo cuts (Apostle's Warning, Give Up The Goods, You Can Never Feel My Pain, Keep It Thoro) on my own time.

a couple of tracks from Product of the 80s actually.

This album is cool though, he called it Albert Einstein and was talking about the false history created for Einstein so I thought the album would be a bit different, but its still a good album regardless.

So as best I can tell, this is the best Prodigy material I've heard since...2002? Hard to say, I've never been a huge fan of HNIC either. But Albert Einstein is opening up to me a little more each time.

honestly the shit never really stuck to me other than a few track, with "Bang On 'Em" being the illest IMO

I think the reason being I immediately recognized so many of samples ALC used and realized he didn't do nothing with them other loop them, pretty lazily I'm sorry to add

and I fully understand the concept and the (intended) "feel" of the album

ALC one of my favs.....but that wasn't one of his steller moments...again IMO

P is good now (I personally think he sounds more invigorated nowadays compared to around the time his style switched after the Jay-Z beef) but he's nowhere near the level of MCing he once possessed. Dude was real nice with it back in the Infamous, HOE, Murda Muzik years.

better late than never i guess

http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/18362-prodigy-the-alchemist-albert-einstein/

Rating: 8.2
Artist: Prodigy & Alchemist
Album: Albert Einstein
Label: Infamous; 2013
By Nate Patrin; August 7, 2013

Never leave Prodigy for dead. People tried that in the mid 2000s, and Return of the Mac came out to blindside them: Alchemist shined behind the boards, providing a timelessly grimy soul-break soundtrack, while the Mobb Deep vet refocused and returned to his malevolent street-noir wheelhouse after years of questionable crossover bids. What was originally intended as a promo vehicle for Prodigy's 2008 LP H.N.I.C. Part 2-- a strong album in its own right-- became one of the MC's defining late-career albums, and set a new precedent for him to live up to in his solo work. Now here we go again: skeptics figured P needed to find some way to regain his footing after his prison bid, his social media beef-not-beef with Havoc, and the rusty compromise of his first post-incarceration albums. And whether Prodigy agreed with them or not, his return to a teamup with Alchemist actually came across like it really meant something, a definitive attempt at reminding everyone just what got him to the point where it matters if he lets people down.

The funny thing about Albert Einstein is that the six-year stretch between Prodigy/Alchemist collaborations means very different things for both parties' art. Prodigy's proven to be best when he finds some new ways to describe his old habits, an endless reserve of sharp threats and cool menace fueling his dark-punchline verses. But Alchemist's switched up his game significantly since the 70s-jukebox R&B/funk break approach he deployed with brutal efficiency on Return of the Mac: he's been on his psych-prog thing for a while now, leaning effectively on pitched-up, complex guitar noodling and lo-fi loops where Hammonds and Moogs hit as hard as kick drums. Hearing one of the giants of NYC hardcore hip-hop spill classic knuckle-to-the-eyesocket rhymes over the same dopamine-jolting hashbar beats that made Russian Roulette, Covert Coup and Gangrene albums so blown-out and grainy? Why the hell not?

In that sense, Albert Einstein is so casually visceral and immediately gettable that it feels like a recent high point for both of them. Lyrically, Prodigy's delivery is enough to make the constant pile-on of relentless violence blur into something more lifelike and experience-driven than empty threats. He's a cinematographer, letting the scene speak for itself, and even when he gets cute with a punchline-- “I peddle dope longer than Lance Armstrong” (“Curb Ya Dog”) or “Can't come around no more, your mouth runnin'/ Sprints through New York like that marathon Puff did” (“Bear Meat”)-- it all ties in with the bigger picture of a callous, calculating scrapper with a grim wise-ass streak. “Bible Paper”'s first verse invokes Breaking Bad body-removal tactics and reduces an adversary to a “gooey mess” and “special sauce.” And the insomnia-fueled "Confessions” relays an insomnia-fueled hit on a hotboxing couple with the kind of detail that haunts (“I saw his radio lights through the rear tint”; “Now there's weed smoke pouring out the bullet hole glass”). The appearance of similar-minded guest MCs pays off, too; he stands up well paired with excellent verses by Roc Marciano (“Death Sentence”) and Action Bronson (“The One”), but in ways that feel more complementary than competitive, like old friends and respected peers shooting the shit.

As strongly as his best lyrics can stand on their own, and as good as he's capable of sounding on even the most familiar breaks, Prodigy's vision really gets pulled into vivid life when the beats are especially tense. And while Alchemist's productions have their own foreboding inner life, an MC who can credibly double-up that haunted-house mood makes that production just that much filthier. Practically nothing on the album feels strained, and even less seems compromised. When subject matter and production click the most graphically-- the weathered resilience of the grown-man badass on the daggers-of-sleet piano trudge “Stay Dope”; a remorseless Class of 95 reunion where Havoc and Raekwon cut through with molasses-bassline dread and nail-biting disco/funk chase-sequence breaks on “R.I.P.”; metal-caliber threats of Old Testament bodily harm set to the tune of downpitched, shapeshifting Eastern Bloc space rock on “Bible Paper”-- there's a real tactile feeling to it. It's like if the uniquely weathered, evocatively musty sensations of long-shelved, resin-stained gatefold LPs and dusty, cracked-spine pulp crime paperbacks were fused and synthesized into music.

gets better with repeated listens & it's the kind that if you're in the mood for it you can let it ride from start to finish.

You can rock it in some headphones or play it loud around the house and it's banging but with Alc being the sole producer, P's late-career laid-back flow & the drums being a bit sparse you can actually have it on while doing work or something else and it's unobtrusive enough to just be good nod music in the background.

alchemist has always been pretty dope, but he's becoming a premiere producer right now. the psychedelic rock/funk/soul samples with the hard-ass drums and progression/change-ups in the beats...dope ish.

prodigy isn't on some '95-'98 level raps here, but yeah, he does do his thing here. this is a more straight-forward, calculating prodigy. some of the wordplay is pretty sick though. i've seen/heard folks say prodigy isn't a 'technically' gifted mc, but i'd respond go back and check the catalog, because his rhyme schemes were CRAZY back day. they're pretty nice on here, too.

overall super-dope album, glad i purchased and will rock with it. it's among the better mobb releases easy.

doesn't even come close to old P, but we didn't come expecting that. Nothing he does on the mic is really amazing anymore, but he fits really well on this style of production

I could see someone like Pusha T or Raekwon ripping these beats even harder though

Like had Raekwon had these same beats, this would go from being a good album, to being album of the year material probably IMO

Speaking of Pusha T, this album is much better than his album, even though Pusha T is easily the better MC right NOW IMO (Pusha isn't seeing 90s prodigy)

Alchemist is the shit

I'd like to hear a Lib/Alc collabo for that very reason 'cus Lib can tap dat chamber just as good if not better...

but one of 'em was the jawn wit' Action Bronson.

The beat was cold but I couldn't sit thru Bronson.

The other two joints had P spittin' type nice but the beats in question were kinda bland so I let 'em slide. Everything else on this project is raw tho.

i guess i listen to too much music, because these are my threshholds:

good track 8-17 plays

song i really like 18-30 plays

song i love over 30

rarely anything reaches 50 or above

nothing on my ipod currently with 4400+ songs (which is about 1/20 of my library) has anything over 76

that kinda shit always blows my mind.

the only playlists I have are for work or other people's CD-Rs.

my own listening habits is either shuffling the entire library, or a full album/mixtape no matter how average or bad that project is.

so when I see someone knowing all the words to some song, or saying they have a song in triple digits (or oftentimes double digits, really...) it's like...how can you handle that much of one song without all the context around it?

usually if there are songs I liked on projects that weren't very good overall...those songs fade out of my life as quickly as the tape. it'll always have the star rating to go back to if I'm ever making a CD for someone, but otherwise I'm done.

i'm kind of jealous when some one says or shows me a song of theirs in triple digits lol

i'm wondering which will be my first to get there

i know if we had play counts when i was a teen / young adult (late 90s / early 00s) i'd have many songs un the hundred.

i've noticed the only songs i know SOME words to are with plays in the 30s and 40s. i can only imagine how many times i've listened to shit like OB4CL or Midnight Marauders or Black Sunday or Muddy Waters to know so many lyrics on so many songs

I know old P ain't coming back but new P hasn't done anything on the mic for me. And Alc beats were only gonna carry me so far (he has been murking almost everything as of late though). I really didn't want to listen to it out of fear that P would just slur over amazing beats. Alc beats deserve better than that.

Since astralblak is saying it's his best work since HNIC, I'm gonna see what's up.

Nary a mention in Stereogum's Top 40 Rap Albums, RS Top 100 albums, OKP's Top 13 of 2013, Spins Top 40 Rap Albums, Complex's Top 50 Albums or any other one you can name.

Meanwhile it shits on Run The Jewels, the incredibly overrated Pusha T album & Chance The Rapper's album but doesn't have the cache of those three for different dumb-ass reasons that have nothing to do with evaluating quality rap records.

Loving "Albert Einstein" isn't mutually exclusive to liking the other two (or even the "Acid Rap", which I personally don't like at all). I've got all three of them in my top 20 of the year: RTJ at the #1, Albert Einstein anywhere from #3 and #5 (depending how I'm feeling at the moment), and Pusha ***just*** outside the top 10.

I will say that there's no good reason that this one is getting left off all the lists. Weirdly, it seems like the de-facto "dark NY hip-hop album" to make all those lists is KA's "Night's Gambit." I like that album a lot too, but AE is definitely better to me.

So when I see all three of these at or near the top of the lists while never once seeing Albert Einstein even catching an honorable mention then yes, I do have to start going at those while professing my appreciation for this album.

Nobody else seems to be doing it for me.

Let's be real there's obvious factors as to why each of the other three have been 'annointed'(c)Crybaby-Cabbage-Patch-Face-George-Karl

-Pusha T has the Kanye machine behind it along with the previous critic's darling Clipse connection to mask the one-note forgettable-ness of the long-awaited first-solo album which was hyped to high heaven & came/went with the Kendrick song/video being the only thing to make a dent.

-Run The Jewelz has the cache of the indie-rap-legend/Kast-connected-Southern-but-still-rappity-rap combo to allow them to kill two birds with one stone (and I like El-P would still have this on my list but last year's R.A.P. Music was stronger).

-This corny Chance The Rapper shit has that 'this year's *something different*!' hype while not suffering sitcom backlash like Childish Gambino would have meanwhile I'm not sure it's any better.

Personally I've listened to Albert Einstein three times as much as all these albums combined but P must no longer be cool or even thought about by these lame-ass supposed taste-makers these days.

I also doubt said pseudo-hip sheeple who fell in line with these consensus picks on what to name & what to ignore if we dug deep into their individual listening backgrounds could teach you or me a damn thing about the genre.

Like, I thought people were really feeling the return of Prodigy as well as Alch being at the top of his game. Not even top 40/50? Interesting...

If Prodigy spent the whole album complaining about Odd Future or something, he would've gotten more love.

In response to Reply # 192

- it sucked artistically, as in, didn't sound very good

- it didn't sell well, even on the underground

He completely ruined all of his momentum as an artist
trying too hard to cash in on the "too old for Odd Future"
crowd

Sad, he had potential

Hipsters already had it in the top 5 of the year before
it came out

Something about Danny Brown just melts their souls
