it's a little jab and nothing more.

I think I even like it more than The Listening, honestly, which is saying an awful lot.

I know The Listening is considered LB's best but I find myself going back to Minstrel Show more. It's like, they took the formula from The Listening and perfected it, polished it up a bit, IMO.

when I first bought and listened to that album, I rewound Hiding Place 9x before moving on to Slow It Down. They kilt that track.

And 9x isn't like some monumental number, but for me I usually go through a whole album front to back at least once through before going back to specific tracks, so that was a lot of rewinds for me.

at one point i interspersed the songs that were sampled right after each song and listened that way.

it's the only album i've ever done that with and it makes for a pretty enhanced experience.

not even joking. Of course, I listened to other music but I copped the Minstrel Show right before I left the States and it stayed in rotation the whole time. Either the disc or MP3 format was with me at all times and the shit never got old. I STILL feel a way when I hear that album...particularly "Watch Me" cuz of some shit that happened over there.

Like all of their "official" albums as a trio, and thought "Left Back" was fairly underrated (even though their was no Ninth). And I'm happy to see all three of them are still making dope music outside of the crew.

personally i'm a little disappointed in what came after, but TMS was one of those albums that felt like it was necessary at the time, and that was exemplified by the BET controversy. in hindsight, i'm lovin it wasn't much of a single and IMO didn't merit mainstream rotation, but to me the logic used by BET was the issue.

it one of the few albums that was able to make a major statement right down to the skits. they used humor to great effect and it didn't feel forced or contrived in context of the overall message of the album. i go back to TMS the same way i do black star.

In response to Reply # 65

i think, if anything, the buzz they generated was definitely the result of a perfect storm of circumstances and the right material at the right time, but saying it won't happen again is a little closed minded IMO. especially since, sorry to say, they didn't exactly storm the mainland. they got serious buzz for a minute with an excellent debut, hit a home run with the follow up, one dude wound up with a few major song placements, but after that? nothing notable.

odd future comes to mind, kendrick lamar as well. groups who basically built their buzz online and became critical darlings that resonate with the current generation and dropped a starling debut, got a little bit of mainstream exposure and love through the co-signs and guest spots with bigger names. it's very similar IMO.

i'd agree wit your point if LB maintained their momentum, but after TMS the buzz plummeted. their at a level that's very obtainable for guys like OF and kendrick.

granted, that's based on my perception of your angle, though of i don't necessarily know what you mean by your statement.

"props, too bad that will never happen again"

how was i supposed to know you were talking about an album, or *what* you were talking about at all? there was literally no indication that you were talking about an album at all let alone a specific one, and i was talking about their career in general and NOT an album, so i have no clue what you're talking about here.

i was pretty clear that i assumed that you were referring to the way they came up, and clearer still that despite that assumption, i wasn't sure what you were talking about. i brought up a couple of examples of somewhat similar rises to illustrate that LB wasn't quite lightning in a bottle and what they did could indeed happen again.

so..... this whole "you were out your body on that one" comment doesn't make sense in any scenario.

I was commenting on how you took something as simple as the statement I made and actually made something constructive out of it despite the fact that you didn't agree with what you thought I meant
calmed down, my man geez

what was the setup like at Missie Ann/The Chop Shop or wherever it was done

we know the beats got made on Fruity Loops, but how professional was the equipment that made the album considering how polished it came out sounding

I ordered The Listening after hearing the "Whatever You Say" remix two times thanks to DJ Burb
I was tight the remix wasn't on there, but I knocked that whole joint for two weeks straight, nothing else

The Listening, Chitlin Circuit 1.5 and Minstel show was my undergrad soundtrack. (P.S. I'm About to start grad school next week, so I need that Phonte solo!) We kept all of those CDs on repeat at the frat house. Thanks for all of the great music/memories. Matter of fact, let me quit bullshiting adn go ahead a play that Listening right now!
