"RIP Don Cornelius"

http://www.tmz.com/2012/02/01/don-cornelius-commits-suicide-dead-died-gunshot/

Don Cornelius -- who famously created "Soul Train" was found dead in his Sherman Oaks, CA home this morning ... and law enforcement sources tell us it appears he committed suicide.

We're told cops discovered the body at around 4 AM PT. Law enforcement sources tell us ... Cornelius died from a gunshot wound to the head and officials believe the wound was self-inflicted.

We're told Cornelius was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"Soul Train" changed the landscape of television when it debuted in 1971 and ran until 2006.

Officials have notified Don's family.

Cornelius was 75.

During Don's bitter divorce proceedings in 2009, he told an L.A. judge he was suffering from "significant health issues" and wanted to "finalize this divorce before I die."

The divorce was granted later that year.

because He is one of the Mount RUshmore of R&B Music that wasn't an Artist per se. I mean without Soul train where would have modern R&B music be?

My Uncle worked on the set of SOul Train back in the 70's through early 80's and he always said that Don was cool to him.

i wonder how Sid Mccoy is holding up?

gotta be some demons or something more going on than we will ever know.

I can't believe that he committed suicide, that's not good to hear but I guess he had some issues that he kept to himself all these years, sad to hear he's gone.

I hope he has finally found love, peace & happiness.

Part of me what like to know what was going on in his life to drive him to do such a thing, but at the same time, I know the more information that comes out, the more tragic this all will seem.

Such a shame.

...the spouse abuse charges, probation and divorce are enough to have on any man's mind. who knows what could've lead to this unfortunate situation.

still, this man's influence on Black culture can never be disputed. Soul Train is one of THE most common experiences black folks had for almost two decades.

i watched it with my grandfather. i watched it with my mom's. for one hour, it was our chance to see us have a good time and party on TV!

regardless of what he went through, we've benefited in some way from his vision and entrepreneurial spirit.

well done Mr. Cornelius!

Things would have been a lot different without Don Cornelius. I mean the concept of Black People being on television would have been totally different without Soul Train. The artists that were on Soul Train....both famous and not so famous may not have had that opportunity for exposure anywhere else...and certainly not in the manner that Don presented them. Balanced that cool...hip....yet dignified and presented that to the world in a format that will live for ever..

That's a monumental dude right there...

Brand New Bag: Questlove on Don Cornelius
by questlove on February 1, 2012 NEWS 1 Comment

you guys see this bag?

this bag has NEVER left my side for the past 14 years. I deemed it imperative that i NEVER part with it. you can imagine the arguments i’ve gotten into with flight attendants over that bag. this bag is my blue blanket to my linus. i carry that bag everywhere cause the future is in this bag. and by the future i mean our past. and by our past i mean Soul Train.

Don Cornelius was my first non musical non celeb non blood related hero.

its amazing timing that my arrival on earth and his greatest creative manifestation came within 9 months of each other. both symbolizing a new hope for urban america.

most won’t get it til now (especially now that he’s gone) but i pray that Don knew of the appreciation he had in all of us born after 1968.

you people will have to forgive me…im just kinda writing from the heart….sporadic thoughts tears and snot are spilling out and whatnot. im certain dream and toure and nelson will do his legacy justice in print….i just felt the need to write something.

i just wanna use my position to really let people know that next to Berry Gordy, Don Cornelius was hands down the MOST crucial non political figure to emerge from the civil rights era post 68. the craziest most radical thing of all is i don’t even consider Soul Train his most radical statement. yes the idea of the young black teenager NOT mired in legal trouble on the 6 oclock news getting camera time was a new idea to most…so of course the fact the U.S. really got its first vicarious look at our culture was amazing.

but the TRUE stroke of genius in my opinion was how Don managed to show US how important we were. which was NOT an easy task.

not by premiering the newest jam by james brown

not by focusing on the latest dance craze
not by the crazy outfits….

ill tell you how Don really made a radical statement. and he himself acknowledges it:

the commercials.

Soul Train had double duty, to not only produce a show, but they also had to provide ALL of the production for the Johnson beauty products commercials that was funding the show. often using the set and the soul train gang (they became soul train dancers in 1976) as lead actors.

ok ahmir so where are you going with this?

the genius of it all was THIS was the first time that black people were proud to be called AFRICAN.

psssh before 1971?—i mean on the real…til like the early 80s on some schoolyard insult game ish? if someone called you “african” that was the most insulting degrading lower than low “im finna f**k you up” type of insult.

i know right? why?

to control our mentality during the slave period we were taught we were the lowest of low.

to control us AFTER slavery during the jim crow era we were taught we were the lowest of low.

the first introduction to entertainment (of which we were allowed to participate) was minstrel entertainment an over exaggerated buffoon display of shame and ugliness that we STILL CARRY TO THIS DAY (minus the makeup) (hello hip-hop….but that is another piece altogether).

to say with a straight, dignified face that BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL was the RISKIEST radical life-changing move that america has seen. and amazingly enough for one hour for one saturday out the week, if you were watching soul train….it became contagious. next thing you know you are actually believing you have some sort of worth.

the whole idea of Afrocentrism in my opinion manifested and spread with Soul Train in its first 6 years.

i saw the impact it had on my mom and dad and how they let the impact trickle down to my sister and me.

i mean i was BORN into it: so i came in this world thinking every african american had it just like i did: some funky dressing, proud, knowledgable parents who since birth exposed me to every record known to man and who kept my crown (make no mistake, i’d cry “mommy cut it off the kids are teasing me!”) on my head as a symbol that one day i would be “a mighty leader”….lol

seriously, they were like “that afro is symbolic because we named you Ahmir and Ahmir means King and to be a King you must have a crown and to lead you must be knowledgeable!”

and with that…Soul Train was about maybe one of 5 tv shows i was allowed to watch on tv. if it was educational pbs or some other similar program then i was allowed but mostly it was all about Soul Train.

and of course watching it as a baby i had no clue Don was trying to program the minds of an untainted generation. hell i don’t even know if HE knew the grand scheme of things. but somehow we rode each other to glory.

once the vcr age came to be, i started religiously recording all the episodes. and back when i became a signed artist i crafted MANY a Dear Santa letter asking if there is anyway possible i can see an episode or two from my childhood.

don’s people never answered me back.

then my 1st trip to japan came.

got off the plane and noticed a weird liking some of the natives were taking to me. and how they all in their weird communication was trying to say they like my “soul train style”.

puzzled i was like “how do yall know that?”

my translator then explained how Don syndicated 100 classic episod—–

that was ALL she had to say: we were in INSTANT “take me to these tapes NOW!!!” mode.

my translator was startled like “where’s the fire?!” but i had to explain to her ALL of my memories were locked inside this show. and because of my limited tv viewing all the thoughts were still fresh in my head.

it took her about 12 hours but she found someone willing to dub all 100 epi$ode$ for me.

after that i was a man on a mission from god.

and EVER since that day i carried those VHS tapes ANYWHERE i went.

why?

to school people.

my first student? D’angelo.

we had JUST started Voodoo and these Soul Train eps were proving to be a MIGHTY educational tool and a source of energy for us.

and day by day you saw and heard the results.

then i started sharing eps with Erykah and so on…

then this artist and so on…

and that artist and so on….

soon after once mini TB drives came into fashion i then started carrying around endless hardrives of Soul Train eps (i got about 400+) sharing with ANYONE within eyeshot a history of a people.

even my thursday night regular spot (Bowl Train at @brooklynbowl) is just an excuse for me to watch my all time favorite show on a movie screen.

Don has left a legacy behind that i will PERSONALLY carry on until i can’t carry anymore.

Soul Train to me is the GREATEST creation and inspiration of my life. i literally watch 5 eps a day just as mere background noise (the best roomate ever is a tv….this is why i cannot be a cat from brooklyn) i will NEVER EVER forget its powerful impact on education on pride on creativity on culture and on me.

i love you don.

love and peace.

even though i was a few years behind (76' baby) that TV was not to be turned from that show on saturdays during my childhood. came on channel 17 in Philly.....it bridged all generations....grandma, mom, uncles, aunts....and even me and my cousins would watch religiously

i'd like to get my eyes on some of those dubbed epi$ode$!

My tribute to Don....RIP....

Don Cornelius' Brash and Brave Success Story, Remembered by Michael Bivins, Bryan 'Birdman' Williams, Chris Hicks, More
February 01, 2012

http://www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/genre/randb-hip-hop/don-cornelius-brash-and-brave-success-story-1006070152.story

By K. Murphy

Like most music industry veterans touched by the incalculable influence of "Soul Train" producer and television host Don Cornelius, Michael Bivins has his own memories of the stoic and baritone man who passed away on Wednesday morning. "You couldn't just call up Don and just ask to speak to him," recalls the founder of legendary vocal group New Edition, currently on the tour celebrating their 30th anniversary. In 1991, the well-connected music mogul, who in addition to being a member of the multi-platinum N.E.-offshoot group Bell Biv Devoe, was eager to showcase his chart-topping acts as Boyz II Men and Another Bad Creation. And the best place to do it was on Cornelius' highly rated 'Soul Train" Music Awards.

"I would be the one calling Don when it came to setting us up to appear on the shows for New Edition and my side acts," continues Bivins. "But the crazy thing is every time I would call Don he would say to me, 'Michael Bivins, what the fuck do you want now?' That's how he would address me," he laughs. "And I would say, 'Well, I'm trying to book New Edition and BBD -- I got the hottest acts in the industry.' And Don would respond, 'You know what, man? You little piece of shit. I don't understand why you always want to call me and suggest what you want to do on my show. You remind of P.T. Barnum. I'll call you back and let you know what slot you have.' And he would hang up in my face, but I would be booked on the show. That was Don's way of showing me he liked me."

That was Don Cornelius: Brash, cantankerous, no-nonsense, protective and above all ambitious. Not even his apparent suicide at the age of 75 can eclipse the overall impact he has had on African-American music, culture, style, business and beyond. Starting off as a local Chicago program on WCIU-TV, Cornelius' "Soul Train" went on to gain massive national syndication, eventually moving its production to Los Angeles and hitting over 100 markets during its peak. But for an African-American man stepping on the historically white turf of television production, Cornelius was an unlikely success story.

"My experience of producing the show in Chicago gave me confidence of almost knowing what the viewer reaction to the syndicated version of 'Soul Train' would be even before it was aired," Cornelius told Billboard during a September, 28 1974 interview. "Because of "Chicago, I knew something that most of my doubters didn't know and when they smirked, I smiled. As I look back I realize that my insistence on perfection occasionally annoyed people."

Indeed, when the Chicago native launched his local music variety program on August 17, 1970 -- a show geared primarily toward African-American youth -- it was truly groundbreaking. No one knew what to make of "Soul Train." Who wants to sit around and watch black kids dance to R&B songs? white television broadcasting execs would ask Cornelius.

Undaunted, the former disc jockey and news reporter secured a sponsorship deal with Sears, Roebuck and Co. and launched his black and white live show on WCIU-TV. Not only were local high school kids recruited to dance on the show, Cornelius tapped into his Chicago music contacts and pulled Jerry Butler, the Chi-Lites, and the Emotions to perform on its first broadcast. "Soul Train" was on its way.

There was the "Soul Train" line, a sweat-inducing fixture in which dancers were given free reign to cut loose and unleash the hottest moves of the day, from the funky chicken to the robot. There was the "Soul Train" Scramble Board, a segment in which two contestants were given 60 seconds to unscramble letters to spell the name of a notable person in African-American history. There was the iconic performances: Curtis Mayfield, Al Green, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, the Jacksons, Rick James, and in later years Run-DMC, Public Enemy, Erykah Badu and the Backstreet Boys. It was often, as its mantra proclaimed, the hippest trip in America. And a brazen Cornelius, mic in hand, was at the middle of it all.

"Don Cornelius was a pioneer," Cash Money Records founder and CEO Bryan "Birdman" Williams tells Billboard. "'Soul Train' was a big part of Saturday mornings…for music fans across the nation and his belief in giving artists a platform was inspirational."

For former Def Jam executive Chris Hicks, Cornelius sits at the same table with another genre-shifting figure in entertainment. "To me he's in the mode of a Berry Gordy," Hicks says of the larger-than-life Motown founder. "For Mr. Cornelius to create his own individual television platform where he introduced artists from his own culture and then create a platform where white performers like David Bowie and Elton John wanted to cross back and touch the urban market place was incredible. 'Soul Train' wasn't just for African-American people. It was being watched by everybody."

Grammy-winning soul singer Betty Wright, who performed on "Soul Train" during the '70s, says as a door-opening television change agent (he owned the syndication rights to "Soul Train," an aberration for an African-American), Cornelius does not get enough credit.

"What Don did was unheard of," Wright glows. "No one could imagine that there would be a show with black people dancing as the primaries and not the secondary, and that it would practically last forever. Don had a vision, which was a huge undertaking for a black man. He was giving you real soul music. Nowadays when they say 'soul' you don't know what you are going to get. But with 'Soul Train,' you knew what you were getting every time."

Cornelius would end his history-making duties as host in 1993. By that time, "Soul Train" had already branched out to an awards show in the late '80s, cementing its status as a cultural institution. The show's 35-year run ended during the 2005-2006 season, but publishing vet Kenard Gibbs wanted to keep the party going. As one of the principle partners of the MadVision, Gibbs led a deal to purchase the entire rights to the "Soul Train" library in May of 2008.

"I'm a 'Soul Train' baby," Gibbs says. "Just having grown up with the brand and being close to the culture, myself and my partners just decided to see if Don would entertain the notion of selling the 'Soul Train' brand. We we're very fortunate that Don was open to the idea that we would treat the brand with the dignity and respect that it deserved. We want to keep Don's legacy alive."

Since then, classic "Soul Train" episodes have found a home on the Centric cable network. Gibbs says there are plans for another "Soul Train" awards show in 2012, a movie based on the program and a theatrical musical. But as always, the conversation goes back to the man who rolled the dice on a vision.

"In terms of the impact Don has had on the sheer number of people's lives both as entertainers and the viewing public-he touched everyone. Don was everything…he was the talent, the producer, the executive producer, the visionary. It was all him. So many artists and business executives have been very clear about the impact Don had on them. He was huge for everyone's careers. There are few in this business like him."

Dog...as I was transcribing that shit I had to stop from the jump...Because I forgot how funny that Bivins story was...lol

What I liked about working on that piece is I got the chance to see the real Don Cornelius...Dude was a GIANT...But he was also an asshole...But the truth is you don't get to where he was able to get to by playing nice...Not when you had television people in power doubting your every step and move...

Don had to be gangsta....

My status update on facebook after finding out yesterday morning:

"Wow! So, I wake up this morning and find out Soul Train legend Don Cornelius has passed away. *Sad face* I'm thinking he perhaps had heart failure or some other condition because he's an elderly man. And then I find out HOW he passed away. WHY THE FUCK WOULD DON CORNELIUS BLOW HIS BRAINS OUT?!!! Really really sad."

My condolences go out to Tony Cornelius and the Cornelius family, our prayers are with you.

I'm completely caught off guard by the passing of my friend and mentor Don Cornelius.
He was like my father in the industry, and at times treated me as one of his very own sons.
I had hoped to see him again before one of us left this earth, but I guess it was not to be.
My feelings are all over the map right now. So many questions and so many words left unspoken.
Thank you for your vision of Soul Train and your many contributions to the music world.
And last but not least, thank you for believing in me. I will never ever forget you. - O'Bryan Burnette II

Being in Nigeria at the time growing up at our house, every Saturday without fail was a SoulTrain saturday. My parents and my siblings, all of us would do the Soul Train lines every now and then. I know most of you here are older than me but I too grew up watching the ep's from the 70's on down as my parents recorded every episode they could get their hands on. I'll never forget watching Shalamar on there performing right when the group's lineup had changed. Prior to I'd never seen them ever perform anywhere else I had only listened to the records my folks played.

It feels like pieces of one's childhood slowly fading away with all these deaths and Don's death is right there with MJ. It hurts. I'm sad most especially that he had to go out like this way. I just want my pioneers and legends to go out with grace and dignity not like this, not like this.

Adieu Don Cornelius. Your legacy lives through all of us.
