41. "Why is everyone going nuts for this track?"
In response to Reply # 9

The music is cool and mellow in the beginning, Frank kinda takes you in a bit, the beat gets funky and Andre does one of his least memorable rap in years. What a waste of a track and collab, never goes anywhere or pops off. Even if it's suppose to stay a laidback track it doesn't bring you in enough lyrically to require this amount of hype.

Hearing Andre 3000 on here and really annoyed we can't get another OutKast album or solo album from him :/

A few spins into Channel Orange, gotta say it's really good.

I do enjoy seeing him receive shine, after putting in so much work, and receiving little to no push from Def Jam.

Stuck to the similar format of making a cohesive album. Dude is a storyteller man. He's a heckuva songwriter...and his singing style fits like a glove with his songwriting. Production is dope so far. I'm 7 songs in and I'm already drawn in.

weak your game is?

Reminds me of when people compared Stevie's voice to Donnie Hathaway's.
Looking back now, you can see it...but it doesn't really matter. One doesn't take away from the other.

They both go in and out of flatter notes, I'll give you that.
I see Frank's voice evolving though. Plus, Musiq's range is much more limited than Frank's.

He may sound like Musiq but he sure doesn't write like Musiq or anyone else out there right now.

I'm more interested in what he's saying.

And don't act like you don't like some Musiq songs.

i haven't given the lyrics a thorough reading (and i'm unlikely to due to how they are presented in the liner notes) but i find most of his lyrics clunky... Concepts are interesting but poorly executed.

>And don't act like you don't like some Musiq songs.

I can also name you a Limp Bizkit song I like... they're still a shitty band though.

Not sure why some say Frank is a good story teller. I'll give it another spin but off the jump it sounds like random thoughts about kids from the suburbs and beverly hills.

Not really feeling it as much as Nostalgia.. maybe it's due to having something to compare it to...

Solid album but far from a classic IMO. Classic for this year compared to other albums I guess...

Sounds good...really vibey. Definitely offering a lot more than other "R&B" artists out there now. Sounds like a more honest album vs. the "my pretty good version of this sound". Earl merked his part. I hope Andre wasnt the one playing guitar on Pink Matter as he has supposedly been studying for years and sounds like a beginner n00b wanking it through a wah pedal.

Streamed it once via his Tumblr page, then pulled the trigger and grabbed it on iTunes this afternoon.

I definitely can't listen to it while I'm writing though. His lyrics quickly pull my attention away from what I'm doing.

I see it finding it's way into the stereo when I'm making dinner in the evenings over the next few months.

It's his songwriting that is superb. I just want to print all the lyrics to his songs and study them. His voice is decent, but his tone is not really rich and doesn't do it for me.

Great album...totally came together on my second listen.
Headphones make a BIG difference.

Random thoughts:

Part of me wishes I had never heard Pyramids ahead of time, but I guess that is just unrealistic in this day and age.

Still...Pilot Jones, Lost, Pink Matter, Bad Religion, Super Rich Kids were well worth the wait.

Seems like it'll be one of those albums that'll give you a new "favorite track" every week...for me that's the mark if something special.

This is not a breezy listen, it's a really ballsy release. I'm glad this guy is getting his due.

Sounds good Better on the second listen He does sound like the trippy Dwele stuff Not a strong voice but not horrible either This is the type of music R&B kats should be making Music with conviction Back in the day this kind of cd would not be anything special but now cuz R&B kats are on the Euro-dance, pop vibe it stands out.

Has anyone heard his Dream Killa mixtape?

1)The hip-hoppers who don't listen to the genre(mainstream pop r&b) so to them a good album from that much maligned group seems like a god send.

2)The mainstream r&b fans who either love he's slightly tweaking the formula or hate it.

3)The old r&b heads who hate it and cling to their 'Back when music was MUSIC' which to them was the neo-soul era, LOL.

I guess since it has some soul and emotion it's considered groundbreaking in 2012.

The whole album is amazing, really. Haven't felt this way since Brown Sugar. Not that they are similar at all, but just the excitement of a new career starting for a special artist. And perfect soundtracks for the summer.

Copping the wax and the fuckin cd next week!

As a comparison, Usher did 128K and Chris Brown 134K for their full-on first weeks.

Dude's about to blow up something huge.

Wouldn't most people think this is about God.

IS it about God or a man.

I think it might be both...Is he feel God will never love him because he is gay like some other singers/people those who grew up in the black church. They have that tug of war with themselves of being Christian and thinking its a "sin" but knowing in they heart of heart that their gay and its nothing they can do about it.

what yall think?

Artist: Frank Ocean
Album: Channel Orange
Label: Def Jam
Rating: 9.5
By Ryan Dombal; July 12, 2012

Frank Ocean is airborne, looking around, taking it all in. "Up above the birds, I saw the sky like I never seen before," he whispers on his major-label debut, Channel Orange, as avian chirps surround him. "You thought I was above you." The 24-year-old has quickly proven himself to be among the most gifted singer-songwriters of his generation; he's got the type of voice, wit, charm, smarts, and ineffable humanity that's always hoped for, but never promised. And he's got every reason to think he's above the vividly realized lost souls that slouch, preen, and weep throughout his album. But that's not how Frank Ocean works. His lofty gaze is powerful, but not all-powerful. "What's a god to a non-believer who don't believe in anything?" he sang on Watch the Throne's "No Church in the Wild". He's so good at questioning that answers can't help but bubble up in the wake of his words.

Along with Ocean's empathy for his characters is a sense of repose-- he's been there, he's weathered it, and he's come away with his Zen-like calm intact. On Channel Orange, this serene deadpan is splashed with crackling emotion, as though he's alternately narrating and starring in his own Magnolia-style cross-wired-heartbreak epic. It's all there on proper opener "Thinkin Bout You", where he battles his own brain while reminiscing about a first love. He tells himself white lies in the verse before flipping to a falsetto that could make D'Angelo sweat for the endless wound of a chorus: "Do you not think so far ahead?/ Cause I've been thinkin bout forever."

When Ocean dropped an early take of "Thinkin Bout You" on his Tumblr last summer, it was quickly followed by a version from perfectly competent Roc Nation signee Bridget Kelly, who claimed Ocean originally wrote the song for her. The fact that Ocean's take dwarfs Kelly's both artistically as well as in terms of popularity is telling. After languishing as a behind-the-scenes writer for pop stars including Brandy, John Legend, and Justin Bieber, with "Thinkin Bout You" Ocean doubled down on the out-of-nowhere success of his unique and brilliant 2011 mixtape, Nostalgia, Ultra., marking his territory as a performer in his own right. And while he's now primarily writing songs for himself, his time toiling in L.A. studios gave him the experience to create a piece as accomplished and varied as Channel Orange, which swings from Stevie-style keyboard breeziness to 1990s bap&B to mystic psych rock to crunching 8-bit funk without thinking twice.

The "Thinkin Bout You" mix-up was telling for another reason, too. As written, it's by-and-large a unisex composition, and the line, "my eyes don't shed tears, but boy they pour when I'm thinkin bout you," didn't seem especially revealing since Ocean wrote the song for a woman. In light of the letter he published earlier this month, in which he stated that his first love, at age 19, was with a man, that line-- and others on the album-- gains some personal and historical context. For a culture that accurately prides itself on sonic progression, hip-hop and R&B can be woefully conservative when it comes to sexuality. This is changing, and Frank Ocean is helping it to change, and if his revelation inspires others to understand themselves or the world more fully, then that could be one of Channel Orange's finest legacies. But it will not be album's only legacy.

Aside from its bravery, Ocean's letter was, in itself, stunningly written. Its beautiful ambiguities had people reacting with sensational headlines, and then amending those sensational headlines, and then thinking about how and why they personally reacted to such sensational headlines. More questions; more answers. After realizing he was in love with a man, Ocean "reminisced about the sentimental songs I enjoyed when I was a teenager. the ones I played when I experienced a girlfriend for the first time. I realized they were written in a language I did not speak." And, whether consciously or not, Channel Orange's language is admirably-- and skillfully-- inclusive. Rather than getting listeners to comb through the lyrics for certain words or references, Ocean mixes things up so well-- and coats the entire affair with heavy doses of disorienting surreality-- that petty pronoun policing is rendered completely useless as deeper meanings reveal themselves at the same time.

While pop is currently in the golden age of exacting self-reflection-- an often beguiling phenomenon spurred on by the internet's infinite mirror-- is interested in a more selfless pursuit. "As a lifestyle, you always being the focal point is innately unhealthy," Ocean recently told The New York Times. "I like the anonymity that directors can have about their films. Even though it's my voice, I'm a storyteller." Those tales are as wide-ranging as they are engrossing, always benefitting from Ocean's eye for detail and specificity. There are sly California class observations in the vein of Joan Didion or Randy Newman, where latchkey "Super Rich Kids" can't see past their own one-percent "Sweet Life". But once again, Ocean isn't just sniping easy targets; "why see the world when you got the beach?" he asks, a Rorschach test of a hook that leaves its levels of bliss or cynicism wholly up to the listener.

There are plenty of the addicts on the back half of the album: the fiend at the center of "Crack Rock" whose family "stopped inviting you to things" and "won't let you hold their infant," or the poisoned relationship between a dealer and his mule on "Lost". On the record's most harrowing cut, "Bad Religion", Ocean is crippled by love and left searching for life's answers in the back of a cab-- the string-bleeding ballad finds the singer offering his most impassioned plea yet: "This unrequited love/ To me it's nothing but a one man cult and cyanide in my styrofoam cup/ I could never make him love me."

While Channel Orange is stuffed with one-of-a-kind details and characters, its overall scope is grand, as is Ocean's. Tape-hiss interludes bind these very hi-fi songs together with a musty analog quality, and a couple of tracks seem to end mid-sentence, leaving you no choice but to keep going. And there's a timeless philosophy involved here, one of hard-won acceptance and the acknowledgement that love and sex and loss will always draw legends to them. How else to explain "Pyramids", a 10-minute time warp that goes from ancient Egyptian wonders to modern strip clubs and essentially reincarnates one of the most storied female rulers in history as a six-inch-heeled woman of the night. But still, the song doesn't read as an indictment of the last 2,000 years as much as yet another attempt to cleverly level the playing field.

"holding my head. keeping it g whatever 'keeping it g' means to me. i've sorta zoned in on my own definition." Frank wrote that on December 27, 2011-- the same day he wrote the "first love" letter he published last week. Both missives, along with Channel Orange itself, carry the same spirit of confident, open-minded redefinition; he's living in his own world, but also fascinated with what's around him. Currently, his Twitter bio reads: "i don't know anything. & neither do you." In Frank Ocean-speak, that's not a statement of ignorance but rather one of wisdom.

In response to Reply # 0

Without question, Grammy nominations are a given, but I predict Grammy Award wins in the categories of Best New Artist, Best R & B Album, & Album of the Year. What other artists could compete right now? His main competition will be Usher for Best R & B Album & Gotye or Carly Rae Jepsen for Best New Artist. Since Adele's 21, no album has really stood out in 2012, so "Channel Orange" should come out on top.

Heard it three times front to back, and I'm pretty sure it'll be in my best of '12 list.
So far the second half is my favorite, but it may change after a few more spins.

I really enjoyed Nostalgia, Ultra when it came out (and still do), but Channel Orange definitely makes it look like the mixtape it is.

Around the time "Watch The Throne" was released Frank was interviewed about his involvement with the album. He spoke of how eager Kanye was to work with him on his debut album.

Frank essentially said that he was honored by the offer but politely declined because he wanted "to do it on his own", as least for his first time out.

At first i thought...thats a ballsy move and Ill be surprised if Def Jam allows him to keep everything in-house without recruiting a big name to drive at least one hit single.

After hearing the album, im so glad Kanye didnt contribute. A Kanye beat or rhyme would have broken the cohesiveness of this album.

And it dont matter if it was Backpack Ye, 808s Ye, or Trap Music Ye. Kanye's brand of production & rhyme just wouldnt add anything to the album in my opinion.

Sure there's a pharell co-production and a dre 3000 co-production. But I took the sentiment as he wanted to keep the project as a whole in his camp....Meaning him & Maylay overseeing everything and recruting a John Mayer or a Tyler, etc where they see a good fit.
Frank wanted to own it.

I could imagine Kanye throwing a hissy fit for days interrupting recording because they vetoed his 'Yo, this song needs an accordion solo, that shit's never been done in hip-hop!' idea.

I think that's more of what he went..He waited all of the credit..even with John mayer most people esp black ain't heard John get down on the axe like that.

Pharrell is behind the scences so you don't really notice ..the only BIG name is 3000 and that shit doesn't fell forced that song sounds like stankonia Kast.

so you really have to give Frank the credit as his vision.

recall seeing some youtube video of Kanye not being able to find the "right" kick/808 for a track on Graduation. He called Timbaland to come in and help....Frank's 808s are shaking beer bottles in my apt. Apparently, he knows what he wants to craft and is accomplishing it.

All the buzz from the Fallon appearance enticed me to check out the album. Before that, I'd only heard him on Watch the Throne.

I didn't like it the first time, but it started growing on me with further listens.

I do hear the Musiq similarities and something about him reminds me of Drake as well, but his lyrics are more interesting.

Like unlistenable cringeworthy levels of lame. However the music it's self is very nice I just always find overly cutesy lyrics hard to swallow (ie. Taylor Swift and alike).

BJ the Chicago Kid had me more hooked from jump,

wasn't giving this the most focused listen, it seemed a lot more solid than N,U. but there's still just something off about Frank that I can't put my finger on yet. I'm amazed P4K loved it that much considering they gave an amazing album like R.A.P. Music just an 8.5 or whatever. I know, different writers, but still. Damn.

I am thoroughly impressed. He's sounds like himself on all the songs, but it's such a versatile album. The lyrics are fresh, he's got a nice laidback tone that he stays in for the majority of the LP. It's dope!

he's not the greatest singer
he's not the greatest song writer
but he has an interesting voice (literally and figuratively)
that makes me want to hear more and more
as elementary as his lyrics are sometimes
it's his point of view that interests me
i like how he thinks and how he conveys that in his music
i can see how somebody might not like him or his style
but that's what it is for me
and this album is a great representation of what i'd grown to love
about frank ocean on his mixtape and various unreleased tracks
he's really good at doing him.

that being said this is my favorite r&b/singing release behind dawn richard's ep 'armor on'

I slept on it. His lack of an amazing voice relegated him to "quick, each song has 15 seconds to impress me nigga or else...*click*" status.

I'd be lying if I said his "coming out" didn't have anything to do with me giving N, U another listen. So I did. The Eagles ripoff was some boolshit though...fa real.

I like his writing and his production sounds cool. I'm not completely wowed, but the Amazon snippets were enough for me to invest in his album.

From here, I'm basing my thoughts off of where he goes from here, musically. I hope he doesn't overestimate his audience like Maxwell did with "Embrya".

I love that line. It might be harsh for some audiences because of that word, but as David said in that season of THE REAL WORLD, that's love, woo woo. In a way, that's why he interpolates Mary J. on the album too, it's that real love, he's still looking for someone to set his heart free.

The second half of Pyramids is my shit... I never heard this song before. I think after Nostalgia I lost interest or just stopped digging for new music.

Swim Good is still up there though... that's a hard one to beat.

Crack Rock to Lost is the best part of the album.

Not to throw his name around with the greats but Prince, Michael Jackson knocked the ball completely out the park with their debut so there is no reason to think that this kid would.

However its a very solid effort, one of my favorite spins of the year, I look forward to dude doing great things.

In response to Reply # 0

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/albumreviews/channel-orange-20120713

This is the most accurate review I've read so far. Critical yet praising yet without being sycophantic, while placing the album and Frank in its/his proper musical/cultural context.

By Jody Rosen
July 13, 2012
The question isn't who Frank Ocean loves. It's how he loves: ardently, recklessly, yet knowingly, with a young man's headlong passion and a mordant wisdom beyond his years. Ocean made headlines when he revealed on his Tumblr that his first love had been a man; his laments for that doomed romance are all over Channel Orange, his first official album. In "Bad Religion," the LP's shuddering centerpiece, Ocean sings: "This unrequited love/To me it's nothing but/A one-man cult/And cyanide in my styrofoam cup/I could never make him love me." There are echoes of soul forbears in Ocean's music – Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Sly Stone, Prince – but his feel for romantic tragedy, unfurling in slow-boiling ballads, links him to an older tradition. He is a torch singer.

He's also his own man, a distinctive voice with no real analogue in R&B, or anywhere else in today's pop. Like his rapper comrades in the Odd Future collective, Ocean writes with a precise sense of place: His tales are laid in decadent, sun-dazzled L.A., a landscape teeming with privileged slackers ("Super rich kids with nothing but loose ends/Super rich kids with nothing but fake friends"), unemployed guys mooching off their stripper girlfriends ("Pyramids"), lovelorn sadsacks who pour out their hearts to Muslim cab drivers ("Bad Religion"). He's a subtle storyteller, with a social consciousness that surfaces in heartbreaking details: the cash-strapped father in "Sierra Leone" who sings his infant daughter to sleep while thinking, "Baby girl, if you knew what I know," the addict in "Crack Rock" whose family has "stopped inviting you to things/Won't let you hold their infant." The music touches on Seventies funk, Eighties electro, and moody, downtempo hip-hop; there are chord changes straight out of Wonder's Innervisions, airy vamps that nod to Gaye's Here, My Dear, snarling guitars that recall Prince's Purple Rain. In "Pink Matter" (which features a guest verse by Andre 3000), Ocean fuses these sounds into a gorgeous, bluesy lament that takes in sex, betrayal, Japanese manga cartoons, extraterrestrials, and philosophical conundrums. "What do you think my brain is made for?" Ocean sings. "Is it just a container for the mind?/This great gray matter."

Slackness and self-indulgence seep in. Sometimes, Ocean is less a songwriter than a purveyor of formless grooves; his lyrics, which at their best whiplash from the mundane to the metaphysical, dissolve occasionally into New Agey goop. ("Feet covered in cut flowers/They mosh for enlightenment/Clean chakra good karma.") Like his "progressive R&B" fellow traveler The Weeknd, Ocean has some hippie in him, and Channel Orange may be best absorbed with an ice blue bong close at hand.

But when Ocean reins himself in, tucking his words and melodies into tighter verse-chorus structures, the songs have startling force. "You know you were my first time, a new feel/It won't ever get old, not in my soul … Do you think about me still? ... 'Cause I been thinkin' 'bout forever." Ocean sings those lines in the woozy "Thinkin Bout You," his falsetto rippling over murmuring electronic percussion. It's a bisexual black bohemian New Orleanian-turned-Angeleno's avant-R&B torch ballad. And, of course, it's just a love song – an anthem for anyone, anywhere, who's found love, and lost it.

for fuck sakes. yes this is well written, BUT it comes off like another writer who has a very loose relationship with R&B. the summoning of the idols to describe THIS work is evident of that. this isn't that progressive musically, it's just very well done and actually is linked to much of the popular R&B of the 90s, with the written focus of the neo-soul singers of the early aughts.

it seems writers are so stunned that R&B can create a competent, mature, honest work still drenched in sex, sexuality and lust that they are rolling out the 9 out of 10 from sheer amazement. channelORANGE is @ 92 on Metacritic; which i read is the highest ever for an R&B album!?!!

lastly, all Sa-Ra haters sit the fuck down... Om'Mas produced near half of this bitch. suck it

At 1030am! They need to stock more.

Packaging is nice. He put "the letter" in there. And there's more detailed credits than the digi PDF.

And Mike Kiwanuka's CD is only $7! Got one out of curiosity. And sheeit, there's a dope ass drum loop on the last track for all you beatmakers.

Picked up the last copy at my Best Buy.
I guess they didn't care, just rang it manually.
$9.99, no tax.
Hopefully that doesn't effect any sales numbers

I stopped there today and grabbed it, and I ALSO got the last copy. And again the cashier seemed happy about it - in fact she thought they had sold out of them already, and when I came up with mine she asked if there were any more that she didn't know about. Guess they're having a tough time getting the issue fixed. I was in there probably five minutes before they figured out how to ring it up.

I went back to the same BB today...this time they actually had a tag on the shelf (in the Rap section), but no CDs. I asked, of course I was told they sold out...yesterday...and ALL best buys in GA were out. I was like FOH I came in yesterday and was told y'all had em but couldn't sell it to me. Chick was like "really??? that's strange". Whatever. I checked online and it showed available in Canton. I ordered it for in-store pickup, and got an email that said it was not available. I called 1-888-BEST-BUY and they switched it to shipped and got free expedited shipping to my house. LOL

a solid and at times even spectacular band provided the backing, while Frank made his way through a set heavy on Channel Orange's best cuts and a few numbers from NU. The highlight was probably "Swim Good"

I really like the way his albums do interludes. They kind of just flow in between and feel like they ad to the album instead of skits which just distract usually.

Chris Brown was right now, the two are very similar. But I think the beef stems from something else and thats just some sly shit he was tweeting.
