What he did with that Lou Rawls sample I had been trying to do for YEARS but couldn't figure out how to rock it right. Kanye knocked it totally out the park on that one.

And, then followed closely by Otis. I don't think anyone else could have taken a vocal soul sample and make such a monster hit in an environment that was FLOODED with dance music pandering.

Come to grips with the fact that most OKP's are of the Nut Hugger lineage, so, if you' re not part of the little cliques that exist 'round here, your posts will probably tank like Souljaboy's album sales.

I know it's trendy to go for those Blueprint beats...

But "Gone" is on some orchestrated next level shit...The bridge with those live strings is insane....The Otis Redding sample is some beautiful shit...Brilliant stuff...

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

As much as I will give Are You That Somebody credit for being that one track that made him a superproducer in EVERYONE's book, THIS song still gets me. It has all of the things I love about Timbaland: The weird animal sounds, stuttered drum programming, nice string sample during the chorus, shakers going wild, etc...

It does have a similar feel to Are You That Somebody in the percussion/drumming department.

Now, my honorable mention HAS to be Brandy's Nodding Off, the bonus track from Afrodisiac.

Come to grips with the fact that most OKP's are of the Nut Hugger lineage, so, if you' re not part of the little cliques that exist 'round here, your posts will probably tank like Souljaboy's album sales.

Come to grips with the fact that most OKP's are of the Nut Hugger lineage, so, if you' re not part of the little cliques that exist 'round here, your posts will probably tank like Souljaboy's album sales.

As in, the reason I was able to pick the two songs that I went with was because I was in front of my computer and looked up his discography and picked those I liked. Now, if I got caught on the street, I probably wouldn't remember that he did Game Don't Wait Remix and Eve's Satisfaction.

The Thirst (off Free's DITR album)

Didn't really like Hallelujah off Game's album cause it was basically a 3K redux.

81. "Up Against The Wall (Getaway Car Remix)"
In response to Reply # 46

This to me is Premier in his prime with the finest beat of that era. I define his prime to be between Sun Rises In The East (1993/1994) to about Moment Of Truth (1998) with the peak being Livin Proof. I mean he absolutely carried groups, and this record is proof that Premier was making (as well as ending, see: Jeru) careers upon decision.

So upon picking something from Livin Proof, I had to go with this particular song because it makes such a brilliant use of such a subtle sample and of course employs his boom bap powdery drums. The ultra-light quarter-note trigger as the piano sample creeps is such a nice touch that is so masterfully done that it outdoes the previous incarnation of Up Against despite it having an utterly neck-breaking beat.

Premier is the quintessential "boom bap" producer, and boom bap was ultimately representative of the New York "inner city" feeling. I don't feel that any track represents that feeling better than this one.

that crazy piano loop premier chops up a little, the cut-in vocal sample, dj solo, then a beat-change with some flutes, chimes and sick bassline...fucking CRAZY beat. definitely one of the dopest beats i ever heard (but few dj premier beats from his peak aren't). i hate the vocals of the actual song, though, so i just jam the t.v. track.

I can't reply to this one. Dude is MAD talented, but his reign on the top is short like leprechauns. I need a couple more years from him before I give him 'spect enough to start listing best tracks.

Same goes for come and wents like Lex Luger, Alex Da Kid, Lil Jon (although he has a couple decades under his belt and he did a GREAT job on that E-40 record), etc...

I need to see longevity.

Along with Jazzy Belle, Blackberry Molasses and Benz or Beamer. And, bump it, Thought Process too...

Honestly, they're the best of those listed thus far.

83. "In The Flesh"
In response to Reply # 72

Pete Rock was basically running the show as far as being "that" producer during this era. He was progressive, funky and consistent. While Premier was continually impressive folks with his style and sample choices, Pete was busy showing how restlessly hard-working habits could improve you as a musician.

This album, The Main Ingredient, was most certainly an SP-1200 showcase. Finally abandoning Long Red and relying on horn samples (a slight exaggeration), Pete sort of blazed the "beatmaking" trail here. Fewer breaks were looped as he opted to program more of the rhythms on his own. He killed it with the filtered basslines on this one, and I particularly love the "Searchin" one. But there's one beat on here that sticks out: In The Flesh.

It feels trite talking about this one around here given how much praise Quest has already vocalized for it. But I can't disagree with his notion about just HOW good his minimalism is on here. From the in-and-out triggering of the guitar sample at the beginning to the delayed "Space" vocals, every piece matters. As I mentioned earlier, Pete was programming drums like a beast and this is the one to point to as the prime example. It makes for such a good posse-cut track for the reason of being minimal and endlessly enjoyable.

Oh, and it was made live in front of Biggie.

I really hate having to have picked "one" beat for Pete as he's my #2 all timer, but I guess this one makes the most sense to me because of both the context and timeless brilliance of it.

and he changed the bassline and the groove while chopping around the hi hats and keeping them in line with the bass, then programming over them to replicate Isaac Haye's feel while
THEN putting Curtis in the mix for the chrous with the piano and the chopped string section repeated behind it...that shit is just beautiful to me
and on top of that he did it with the SP 12oo, you have to love what you do to put yourself through that

The mix is WAY much better on Star Wars. With Hip Hop, the beat is cool, but with Star Wars, it's MAGNIFICENT. Perfect proof that a proper mix is important.

And, I do need to revisit 1st Class something bad...

These cats were making like the MOST intricate joints at like 17-21. It's just ludicrous. But, the unfortunate thing about that is, if you're that good at such a young age, there's normally no where but down to go from there...

Nah, it's the Detroit Emeralds, that pattern will fool you... but it's the same break contained on Marley Marl's "Keep Your Eyes On the Prize" and what RZA used on "Incarcerated Scarfaces" ...

And, the fact that I have to ask that question, being a pretty avid music listener myself, proves the issue with tracks like Stay Real, etc..

If a more major artist releases it before or at the same time as a lesser known artist, the latter is shit out of luck.

And, with the PSA/Stay Real debate, if we really want to quell it, let's just go back to the interlude on OC's second album when the Beatminerz freaked it WAY before revisiting it for Black Moon.

I do love that sample, though, because you really don't have to add ANYTHING to it.

To answer your question, Boston rapper Virtuoso came out with a track with the same sample featuring Mr. Lif and Esoteric. This song actually gave me a better appreciation for how the Nuts interpreted the track. They put some of the HARDEST drums, and the song just bangs. I can't find a video of the track, but there's a live performance of it on youtube.

Yeah, I mean, there's nothing about flipping a sample first that makes you the owner. Like GURU said, you can't own no loops. However, doing a song with the same sample always brings comparisons. Premier is the king of this. The way he flipped "Seven Minutes of Funk" for NYG'z "Giantz ta thiz" was incredible.

>Easy Mo Bee has a certain knock he gets out of that ASR, and
>that shit he laced Busta with was a perfect example.

Although, I'll say that, now knowing much more about production than I did years ago, that knock is normally attributable to which compressor the engineer decided to use...

I've owned most of the popular hardware we all lust over and have yet to get that magical sound folks claim to exist without using outboard gear...

No disrespect to you, cause I know NOTHING about your background (and you may VERY WELL be getting the world's most AMAZING knock out of just an ASR alone) but, this tends to believed most frequently by internet fanboys who love to wax nostalgic about stuff that they have no proof to corroborate.

I ALWAYS like to talk about the cats who were all over the internet saying that Madlib only uses the SP300 and that alone. But, when Elemental (RIP to the last great hip hop mag) did an interview with that man, he had every piece of beat making hardware known to man...

Those metallic synths and the vintage Jay Dee bass/drum combo - too good. The sample was rumored to be Weather Report's "Young And Fine," but I'm pretty sure that's not it. Got some good ones to trade if anyone hits the inbox with the real sample.

those beats are okay but i don't see anything too innovative or mass appealing.

i'd give it to electric relaxation for overall legacy, or personally - lyrics to go - for innovation and immaculate sample usage. that shit hits so hard even without a bassline.

again for me personally, i would include show business, vibes and stuff, and jazz as tip's best work.

Q Tip producing for Mobb Deep with a Patrice Rushen sample somehow makes one of the strongest tracks on one of Hip Hop's darkest albums, as well as greatest... It doesn't even sound possible. Q Tip was just unstoppable during this time.

To a degree he's right. The Purple Tape was absolutely laced with bangers, and I think Gold may have been one of the few tracks that came to that level. Mind you, I love the fuck out of Liquid Swordz, moreso that Cuban Links to be honest. But I can't say the production was better on that one with a straight face either.

I think the production on Liquid Swords is more atmospheric...It fits GZA's album concept in a more ominous way...

I go back and forth with Cuban and Swords...To me those are the two greatest Wu solo albums...

Liquid Swords was like the precursor to Kanye's Yeezus to me. Everything was dark as hell and lacking any true melody, although there WERE like 1-3 bangers.

To this DAY I still can't listen to Liquid Swords.

Cause, I just FINALLY bought a copy of it the other day and thought that MAYBE I was tripping not liking it. Tried it again, like damn near 20 years later and STILL hated it.

But, I respect it's legacy up there with the other great Wu solo albums.

In response to Reply # 128

I've never heard of anyone agreeing with me on this one, but it's very clear to me that it's his best.

RZA's beats during his prime (1993-1997) were characterized by eerie samples, oddly timed stabs, deliberately sloppy drums and just an overall "basement" feel. This song, Box In Hand, expertly demonstrates his aptitude to changing the track on whim as well as the aforementioned stylistic decisions he employed in his production. As good as the main beat may be with its wonky piano, clever scratching and applause samples, it just leaves us wanting that opener that he dropped on us. And when he gives us back a taste of it at 2:43??? It's a heartdropping tease that makes me shake my head in both its cruelty and its subtle genius. RZA doing what he did best.

This was never one of my favorite tracks either, but, it's GLARINGLY obvious when I just listened to it.

I know I had heard that a lot of producers don't give RZA's earlier stuff any cred because a lot of it was clashing, disparate parts, but, it worked for me, for the most part.

But, that one....? Nope.

Can't call it with the vintage/core Wu material, but outside of that, it's definitely A Day To God Is A Thousand Years.

edit: Nvm, just realized Bronze Nazareth did that joint

i might be alone on this one, but i think RZA set a standard with his very first wu-tang track to set the tone for what was to come. the samples, drums, and bass, and way they evolve through the track are nothing but genius.

Do you go with the Time stuff ("777-9311")? Those great singles off of 1999? How about "When Doves Cry" or "The Beautiful Ones"?

Well, the "illest" Prince production (for me) is "The Ballad Of Dorthy Parker"....The drum programming on that joint makes me rewind every time....

My knee jerk answer is 8 Steps to Perfection, because that was the beat that made me and a lot of other people take notice. It's maybe the most universal of his classics.

Buuuuuuuut...

The F-Word might be the best to me.

Buuuuuuuuut....

Then I think it should be something more epic like Poisenville Kids No Wins, Hell's Winter or Iron Galaxy.

EDIT: Re-listening to all these El-P beats has me ready to punch a hole in the wall at work. Man, B-Boy's Alpha. Vast's verse is soooooooooo good.

----
I check for: Serengeti, Zeroh, Open Mike Eagle, Jeremiah Jae, Moka Only.

Off The Wall (the album)

Honorable Mention would be Brothers Johnson's 'Light Up The Night' album and Razzamatazz.
