In response to Reply # 20

I think taking so much time could have had D thinking that his return had to be epic, game changing greatness or else it will be viewed as a failure. Maxwell's long awaited follow-up showed that's not necessarily the case.

BlackSummer is a very good album but it's not earth shattering great but guess what, no one cares. The people just to hear your music.

as artists do.
i remember ?uest saying the "Now" album was recorded in an environment similar to "Voodoo" (or at the same studios or sumthn, cant remember). perhaps BSN gave D a minor push to do somethin, who knows.

for that matter, here's somethin ive wondered for a long time: have Max and D ever met or talked about each other? seems like they've never mentioned each other at all throughout their careers (not that they HAVE to, but just wondering).

aight. i signed a confidentiality agreement so uh.....

i guess i can answer some stuff.....

Ray Angry has replaced Pookie on Keys
Jef Lee Johnson had to replace Jesse Johnson

(both called away on family emergencies)

although im salty about the jesse angle not going down (im kinda co-MD of the show, so i will say that i used jesse as a MAJOR excuse for D to get his Parade Tour on with the arrangments....ESPECIALLY the revamped Brown Sugar which we morphed into Mutiny 2012.

i can't wait til years from now when these rehearsal jams make their way to collectors so yall can hear the massive funk goin on.

can talk about the set list.

but i guess i can mention

if the soultronics were more JBs 70
then this new band (god i don't even know if im allowed to leak out the name.....and i named em!) is straight up on some Funkadelic "Say Brother" type shit.

yes d is n physical fine form, back to his muscular skinny self where the Voodoo tour last left us....actually its more muscles cause he went hard into marshall arts.

his hair is way longer so i dunno which way he's gonna rock it. his fro is fuller than mine. but he's been rocking plats so its up in the air. on the real i would actually rock it like george in that say brother clip (the quasi mohawk ish if i was him

uh...damn i really stepping on shaky ground here cause i dont know what im allowed to say and what im NOT allowed to say....

they are rocking like 4 or 5 of the new joints.

i guess the only cat imma let out the bag (only cause im so proud of his progress, but he's shy about it so i know he dont want me to put him on the spot like this)

but man....

the only good that came out this 11 year freeze?

his guitar playing.

and i dont mean that hill/3000/wayne guitar playing.

i dont even mean that kravitz playing......

i mean that hazel shit. that ernie isley shit......

if i ever seen evidence of that gladwell 100000 ish?

this is that.

i feel like he's stepping on holy ground if he dont come out the gate like frank zappa.

ill say this much.

if he practices as much as he is now? (5 hours a day)

he could surpass zappa in about 4 years.

THATS how good he is now.

aight.

you didnt hear this from me.

digging the fact main man is going in a more funk oriented direction

im sure the ladies will go ape shit for the new (old?) chiseled frame

& im extra glad he didnt cut his hair we need more of that not less

BUT!

alll of this...is moot...til

a) we get a single
b) we get some stateside dates

europe can get the JV performances out the way, work the kinks out

but when he brings it to DC/philly/nyc/SF etc...it must be brought

Here's the real questions...Jesse got a wife and kids?
I'm only asking cause that brother IS ON ONE!!!!
Like... I get the impression he always has a guitar in his hands and is more
than a little cray cray. ('member when he had that incident in the driveway?)

I mean him and Jam had jheri curls...
but Jesse looks like he misses his.
(only country nigs & crazy m.f.'s look like they MISS they curl up under a hat & doo-rag)

What's the real scoop on that brother?
D'angelo can actually take a backseat with all of this 'til we get more backstory
on J.J.

curious to see if you will answer these questions:

- will jesse join the europe tour later on or not at all?

- if you're co-md'ing, who is the other md? d'angelo himself?

- is d'angelo actually playing keys/guitar during this tour (contrary to the voodoo tour where he touched the keys few times)?

- funny you refer to funkadelic's 'say brother' performance; i think this video was discussed here on okp back in 2004 or something. the same time we heard d'angelo was working on a funkadelic/sly/zappa-like album. and on the redbull music academy in 2006 you said d'angelo plays guitar like eddie hazel, is obsessed w/ leadbelly and the beatles' abbey road medley and desperately wants to do his own medley w/ crazy time changes etc?
did he stay true to this sound/direction, cause it seems time actually stood still for d'angelo for over 7 years. or has this project evolved to something else throughout the years?

- you and pino for the most part gave voodoo (the album) that signature soulquarian sound; is that sound still very much present on the upcoming record or did you guys switch up your game for this one?

- is "james river" even being considered at this time as an album title (personally i like it)?

thanks. will be looking forward to the amsterdam shows.

just curious as to why did he choose to master an instrument...
instead of getting session musicians to mold his sound.
was it just full control?

reminds me of when kim deal took a year to learn drums so she could play them herself in the studio. it didn't make the new breeders album finish/come out any faster.

While I appreciate the update, I couldnt help but smell voodoo marketing 2012
This whole surpassing so and so and comparisons to the past and prince iggs me
It was done the last go round
And if I'm not mistaken, it led to dude's downfall
If its great and dude is so great, let him stand on his own
Time will tell if he is the one
So far history has proven otherwise.

Whew....I feel better...now I can work lol

1 of the problems w/Voodoo was the hype created by the label and fed via various writers. they talked about the album like it was the greatest piece of music since (*insert your favorite seminal R&B/Funk/etc album from the 70s here*). it seemed like D's 'meltdown' was due in part to his fear of living up to that hype. i dunno how much he believed his own press or what part he played in creating that press.

again, they'd all do well to tone it down this time. b/c he hasn't put out an album or toured in 10+ yrs, he's got a built in audience. we'll check out the album and/or the tour w/o the 2nd Coming of Clinton/Stone/Wonder/White/Prince/Brown/et al hype. D'Angelo doesn't need to be the Funk Messiah. he just 'needs' to put out a hot record and support it w/a dynamic stage show. that's it. and i'd hope he does it all as The First D'Angelo as opposed to The Next ___.

fuck you.

I mean Black artist ....current....and album and tour hyped based off of the musical style..yeah D was a star.... but I honestly don't see any current Black artists being talked about in terms of the music they are going to making or performing during their current or upcoming tour or album...

you go people doing some cool acrobatics tricks and shit on stage....you got a lot of pantomiming and lip syncing and shit on stage...but nobody is talking about or getting hyped about the music being released or perform really....

The place where D' left the mic on the mantle so to speak.....the mic is still sitting there...nobody came and took that shit....Nobody stepped up and went beyond what he was doing and can now say No D..that style is played...we do it THIS way now..

nobody...

**shrug**

to me then that's not hype..it was backed up ..... even more so because nobody took the baton and took it further....

You asked who has done it since Voodoo.

I tell you who.

I went to the Voodoo concert.
I went to Mama's Gun.

At the time, I was a far bigger fan of D'Angelo than I was of Erykah but I felt Erykah's show was better. And I recall a lot of talk at the time where many, many people said the same thing and in fact crowned Badu as the most relevant soul artist of her generation.

All of a sudden, you've got a ton of new qualifiers to add--that was a long time ago, who has done it in 2012, etc.

Outside the insular OKPverse (which includes this board and some general likeminded affiliates like Org), you don't really see it about D'Angelo either.

where are discussions happening ANYWHERE about ANY current Black artist regarding the performance of their music?? Who's in their band? What different arrangements are being used?? Or even general discussions about the actual music itself that an artist will be performing leading up to their album release?

I mean we have Black artists who are selling millions of records every time out....yet their music and/or the performance of their music is not being discussed in any manner ANYWHERE...even by their most dedicated "fans".... You might see some stories on them on Bossip or Mediatakeout....but where are music related discussions like I mentioned happening??

In fact who is even utilizing live performances as tune ups and previews of an album release?? Something that was so common place before....Now people just come out fueled by whatever marketing strategy....some lip sync performance on cable tv somewhere..... People don't do real live shows leading up to releases like that anymore...

people are talking about hype.... to me hype is 2 artists doing the same thing ...going about putting themselves and their music out in similar ways....and one getting "hype" based upon something OTHER than the actual music.... D'Angelo is doing it in a way that although was previously the norm...is certainly not the norm with other current mainstream Black artists....so to me that's not about hype as much as it's discussing the artist in a way that focuses on THE MUSIC.... A novel idea...an artists music being the central point of discussion....lol.

I didn't want to come in here all disrespectful... but I just don't see the positives in setting expectations so high. Especially after the last 10 years.

And now we moving back to the Parade era? Since the Voodoo Tour was leaning hard on SOTT I guess we'll get Purple Rain in 2022. The real question is will D rock the toss salad?

i mean a mofo gotta have a hero.

clearly post "baby im a star" era prince to about post lovesexy you see JBs imprint all over it.

pssh that's how Alan got hired in 82

"get me James Brown's guy"

so it would be only natural that the next in line (and yes i do agree that D and "the promise of being the next thing" pressure wasn't a good fit)---would be influenced by what he grew up on.

i mean yeah if its based on a main influence the show is more Funkadelic pre 76 than Prince.

but its only natural to compare it to Prince cause Prince is the last figure outside of hip hop's realm that was pure soul without having to add any breakbeats chocolate into his peanut butter.

hope that made sense.

i mean what is funk with no hip hop influence?

pretty much where prince left off.

which kinda answers a question (being as though d came in the door with post tribe boom bap in his soul) as to "where is the sound going"

its not soultronic/dilla sounding (i mean yeah chicken grease and alright are there sounding like the OGs but there is a new energy to it that i cant explain right now)

so i don't think its a curse to say post "parade"

cause on the real...that was the last time in which rnb was free to be rnb without having to blend it with hip hop (of course i have no complaints for my whole legacy is based on that---but i truly cant wait to hear some funk without hip hop imprint in it. i am DYING FOR THAT DAY

which is pretty much where this album (cant say title and its no longer james river) leads us.

i *think* 5 of the 7 joints i did are on it and its NOT hip hop breakbeat based.

the closest i can describe one of em is kinda my breakbeat take on diamond's drumming on ohio players "never had a dream" or "our love has died"

-thats the most normal sounding "traditional" joint i did. but the OTHER shits? and especially the ones james gadson played on (cotdamn!!!!!!!!!)---is as close to black music untouched by hip hop as its gonna get without being derivative of the dap kings/saddiq revival.

lol look yall i was giving my official yes this tour is real and album is just about done 2 cents in.

i know how risky it is to be like "nah this shit aint real"

im just here to reveal in some seinfeldian way that its real and spectacular.

>Like I said, I want him to focus on being The First D'Angelo,
>not The Next Prince.

And before I say this let me be clear I'm not looking to start shit for my own entertainment or be disrespectful... that said,

I think it's a little disingenuous to just say Prince borrowed from JB and D is borrowing from Prince... when the fact is Prince had not only carved out a pretty unique identity and sound before doing blatant JB tributes but he was lifting from so many others it was hard to look at his act and link it to just one. D isn't in this boat at all... When you are doing remakes of Prince B sides, blowing up with a single that's purple as shit, mimicking the look and style of Prince tours (right down to what people are wearing) then to come back and make comparisons to the same artist he's already leaned on heavily 10 years ago... well let's just say it's marrying him to an artist in a way Prince never was... and definitely not JB. I'm sure there are a lot of influences in D's new stuff... as there was in the past. But I saw the Voodoo tour and honestly it leaned so heavily on Prince it came off more karaoke than concert... to go back and use more Prince comparisons now is just a little too much imo... even as a reference. D is a very talented dude and I want to see him build his own identity not keep following P's footsteps for his entire career. Leave that to lesser talents like the Dream. It's time for yall to get off the purple pipe. When you have an addiction you have to just break from it cold turkey. I just don't see posts like 15 made helping D at all.

pre-76 Funkadelic is exactly what I'm looking for.. Raw Funky Music is much needed right now..

I'm with it...

The game needs a known artist to do something like this. Make an album that isn't "blended" with hip hop... Give some distinction back to some different styles of Black music without that canned template that has really dragged the music down in recent years...

hopefully that will open some opportunities for artists to feel comfortable to go outside the current box again.

there are plenty of great musicians, artists out there.

They keep their shirt on.
They don't have a famous drummer co-signing their every move and selling wolf tickets and making comparisons people who have Avant (dear God) in their collection will nut over.

I mean it comes down to this if D is playing with his shirt off chicks will listen but that doesn't make him any better than the 300 plus pound musician who is actually great you dig?

I honestly think were only looking thru the OKP microscope if we are saying that D'Angelo is the only artist where fans discuss

lineup
setlist
arrangements

Mark your calendars folks I think I'm actually kinda agreeing with AFKAP for the first time... ever. lol.

The average black music scene doesn't have these discussions but they are happening.

I hate to say it but that simply isn't true.

Also I wasn't as impressed with Voodoo live - it seemed very unfunky.

Seriously. I'd heard local bands that completely were killing the Soulaquarians.

I'm down for D, and I want dude to win, just like I want most people to win actually - but..

for my money if all your doing are Prince Impresonations and Funkadelic reworks... I'll pass.

Innovation would be a much better approach cause honestly there are other artists who are not just more musical, but better musicians, and more daring than

waiting 12 years to learn guitar
waiting 12 years to put out an album.

If anyone waited 12 years to learn guitar and you gave them another 4 on top - if they practiced 5 hours a day - ANYONE could get close to Zappa in 15-16 years. That's just common sense. That's just anyone - there really is nothing special about that.

Although no one will be close to Zappa.

I just want dude to have fun, do his thing - I really don't put him on par with

Prince
Funkadelic
James
Marvin

Marvin would be the closest cause his music wasn't nearly as daring as the aforementioned artists.
nor will I. Ever. His music simply isn't as good as theirs but it doesn't need to be.

Prince made his masterworks in 6 months. 6.

The Beatles made Sgt Pepper and Magical Mystery tour in the same year. On a 4track at that with live takes.

My point? Me personally (just pulling off the convo here lol) I would never compare him to the greats cause I don't consider him a GREAT. Just a good artist in our current era. Which honestly is all that matters.

I don't think he's fantastic I just think record execs don't get it - don't care about art or music - just money. Hence how you have heard more about a TPain than say Norah Jones. *PhifeDawgshrug*

But I still say I hope everything works out and everyone has a good time - it's just great he's back and doing his thing.

Although I agree comparing concerts is indeed moving the posts but truth is I agree Eryka has been way funkier than her male counterparts all along both on record and live. It's just men are so used to seeing naked women the impact isn't as solid as it is for women seeing a naked man. *Phifedawgshrug*

In response to Reply # 248

One of the reasons is Marvin played drums and keys on alot of his own joints - I personally feel that had he delved more into this type of recording - who knows - but his imperfections showed.

JB was all arrangement.

Pfunk - all arrangement and content.

What's Goin On and Vulnerable are great - for vocal arrangements and lyrical content especially.

I love Marvin - make no mistake about it.

I can't predict the future tho'.

dangelo should be at that same stage now.

i know its hard to really talk about someone trying to do funk in 2012 without talking about previous legends but if anyone can do it without it sounding horrendously twee and retro like saadiq or whoever, id still like to think its dangelo (or bilal, or erykah). all the mass-referencing, all that hype in that saul williams essay, its going to be excruciating if that happens all over again. i know this is a guy still finding his feet - he hasnt even done a 3rd album yet! - but sheeesh. id be more hyped if we heard that this was The Funk but that it sounded like no one but dangelo.

I really don't see the need to inject pessimism into this conversation. Comparing an act to the past only brings clarity to their music roots and how they are expanding upon a style of music established by their predecessors. There's no need to go digging for something 'wrong' with that.

For all my true funksters are there, you already know what's coming.

To all the heads (especially women) who are expecting that sexy MF from the Brown Sugar/Voodoo experience, open your mind and your ass will follow..

(peep the link below and take note)

http://youtu.be/bO1IH8f0Wm4

Btw, I bumped into D in Oakland during his run with the Voodoo tour told him that he should flip Mutiny live and his face lit up and told me "that's my shit". I'm glad that you threw that in there Quest because Mutiny is one of my fav Prince performances from the Parade Tour and I know for a fact that D would kill it.

sorry Jessie J wont be able to join on the initial tour, that woulda been cool (maybe he'll be able to join in on the American leg of the tour?) I ain't mad at Jef lee at all though, nice choice. Michael Severson is another guitarist that i think woulda added interesting element in the mix as well.

i'm one who likes to go to shows with minimal preconceived expectations (i actually PREFER it at concerts when artists play completely NEW songs that i HAVENT heard before...so if the set is ALL new shit, i'll be happy as hell)

that said, i admit, i am glad to see that it seems like there'll be plenty of guitar...bring it i say.

gritty & raw please, NOT perfect & pristine.

and yeah...please film, record, DOCUMENT those rehearsals any way you can...then, i dont care if ya'll leak portions on the web OR if you save them all for bonuses on the ..<ahem>...deluxe edition of the multi disc 5.1 surround blu-ray boxed set multi date concert release ( "make it work" ® Tim Gunn). just get them rehearsals out there....

thanks for the update...see ya'll stateside for sure...

Just got back from the show! It was fantastic to see D' back at it again and the atmosphere in the building was electric. He played The Root, Playa Playa and an awesome funkier version of Brown Sugar.
The new joints sounded great and my new favourite song is called Sugardaddy...

I saw Lauryn Hill play at the same venue on monday and it doesen't even compare. Hype or no hype, shirt on or off, better or not nearly as good as Prince... all I can say is that I myself really enjoyed this show and D's back and his performance tonight showed that! Goodnight!

What a performance tonight. I've seen him before with other artist but tonight was just on another level. He definately adds something new and fresh to the mix.

Pino, amazing as per usual and Kendras voice and energy really was another highlight of the show. Still buzzing...

No offense and I'm not being snarky but why wouldn't you appreciate a man being on tour promoting his music? lol.

C'mon man. You are right about JJ but honestly I think D should take this time to get HIS chops up,not Jess'.

Give it time JJ is hitting the second leg.

I would think as time goes on in the tour that might emerge.

I'm not really as interested in hearing him on guitar as I am Eddie Van Halen. Dude aged man, alcoholism and that new song is hideous. The video even more so - but I wanna hear him kill old joints like Eruption.

In response to Reply # 188

When we look at that we realize we could come up with a variety of answers. My point isn't against you or anyone, honestly - it's just hey he's alive, performing, the crowd is into it, the band so far sounds cool (I want to hear the soundboard recordings - not to judge, just to... enjoy), and his voice sounds cool as well.

My head isn't into it so much to have an opinion so soon is all I'm saying really.

It's like Sade - I don't really judge her albums, if I dig it I dig it if I don't I don't. I never made noise of it either way tho is all I'm saying.

It's a good day man.

D'angelo is performing.
Lauryn is announcing new dates she will probably not live up to.
And the Obamas have a wedding anniversary.

Yeah I dunno what i'm saying either lol...

Just have fun wit it really. That's all.

wha...??? really?

i personally couldn't care LESS about what a band is friggin wearing on stage. Does that really affect your enjoyment of a music concert? Man, i just don't get it....

i go to a concert to HEAR some creative shit happening on stage and experience some talented musicians having a blast creating and playing around with the sounds. Based on that, what clothes they're wearing and so forth has zero impact on my own enjoyment. i'm really there JUST for the musical experience, but hey, maybe thats just me, to each his own....

ha! are you talkin to me?

if so, lets evaluate....

first, im nothing if not consistent on THIS point....I DONT CARE what an artist is wearing on stage, what hairstyles they are rockin, if they have back up dancers or lightshhows or anything....i just dont care. my favorite artist (Meshell Ndegeocello) goes on stage in whatever the hell she has on and plays her shit...thats what i dig. It bothers many that she doesnt 'dress' for a concert, but not me. If the music is killin, then THATS what i came for. Same goes for Dangelo.....

you on the other hand, feel D should get his hair did, and dress in some more fashion forward attire, is that correct?

and, in your words....I'M the 'dangelosexual'??

...unh hun...ok...

heheh...D, keep rockin the hammer pants man, as long as you keep that groove goin!!

see my reply above for how little i care about what a musician is wearing at a concert...(like, basically i dont give a rats ass what they are wearing)....

your hammer pants joke did crack me up though, hah!

that is, until i realized that i pretty much rock very similar baggy pants to work myself every single day! heheh maybe its a Richmond thing (thats where i live too)

Ya'll are missin the boat though...those baggy pants are comfortable man, trust me!! And they look WAYY better than them dumb-ass skinny jeans that everyone and their brother is trying to squeeze into these days. THOSE are stupid.

Screw them D, keep rockin it Richmond style bro! 804 in the house!!!

and R.Kelly is going to put the extra side of mop and glow on that turkey when he hits the road in the spring.

D'Mumblo is a Old relic making music jive turkey. still can't write no songs, mumbles and stumbles and needs a new update sound.

that stage show and performance is cool in a Las vegas Wayne Brady Setting with a Afro wig and set thing, but 12 years away for that Mess?

D'Mumblo is on that Double Crack.

w no shirt.

looking like he was in a Broadway Motorcycle Gang...

Rkelly is not any kind of Goat, King, Leader, Deal Breaker, Game Changer. He was the man in the 90s and had a few hits in the 2000s.

see what I did there? what I'm pointing out is it's easy to be critical. Just enjoy it. If not keep it moving.

One thing for sure, don't use Rkelly as your argument. Lol.

no need to compare.

R.Kelly is Kobe Bryant to D'angelo's Penny Hardaway . a Great Artist who has Dominated as to a Artist who choked and been a Milk Carton character for over a decade and Mumblo ain't that deep.

there is no need to judge another man for how he's chosen to live his life. That's playing God.

I understand if you really like Kellz, to each his own.

I understand it you wanna rep Kellz, to each his own.

However you have to understand that there are some that feel that way about others. Like D'angelo or whomever.

I thought that Weeknd shit was wack, overratted and wreaked of fake studio production that wouldn't translate live at all - I feel i was completely on the mark on that judgement as well. That was the case with every artist Doc ever produced (Esthero, Res, Weeknd) great on record - deer in headlights on stage. Anyone sounds great over Doc's production cause Doc is the fucking man - but Doc's production is not designed for stage. However, outside of me just exposing that - there was never any need for me to tear the man down (Weeknd). Let him do him.

Rep your man Kellz, but no need to cross lanes to do it homie.

Your posts are funny as a mufucka tho.

funny how a never was is getting all this attention?

novelty life long biter and a cat who had 1-2 legit cuts and alot of smoke induced jams is given a pass at what?

Kellz got Props from all folks of all ages in the Hood.

D'angelo got some funny Stans, makes me laugh how a half baked and half made career is getting so much attention.

i mean in the R&b History books D'angelo is sitting with Sisqo,Omarion and Marquez Houston in the Featherwight Section of R&B.

sorry but this ain't the mid 90's no more.

oh wow. sounds kind of like a dope outtake (from a certain other someone). Almost like something from the Parade-era. I hate to make the comparison, but on each listen, it's right there.

If this is the direction of the new album...then wow.

sounds like 'africa' remade with wendy and lisa. definitely not 'funky', which is weird, i never thought dangelo would be 'pop' sounding (the song sounds pretty good though, even if seems to be a lot of chorus). hmmmm.

I dig the sitar strings. Adds a special atmosphere to the mix. Good-feel mellow mood with the warm chord progression and harmonized vocals. A keys solo towards the stretched ending would've been a nice addition though.

I don't like the Prince rip off joint pt blank... sounds too Dream Factory to me and to me that credit goes to Prince for that sound.

My thinking is they may fair alot better on the album. Too soon to tell.

Another life I dig tho... the man can croon.

but D fans are happy

D looks happy and that's really all that matters.

He's not looking like a Deer in Headlights doing a Science lecture(FrankOcean/Weeknd) and to me that's great.

Enjoy this romp!

I am amused/dismayed with some of the criticism I've read in this thread.

Were people expecting a classic show after all this time away? I am just happy he appears to have gotten himself together and looked happy to be back.

Some of it was derivative of Prince but I'm okay with that for now. I'll be more judgmental if the album is nothing but a Prince pastiche.

or the voodoo tour version even...

this is just a bad remix or the time tribute.

would be alright if jesse was up there w/ him, but without him it's laughable imho.

btw hope this new album will be an all the way d'angelo record instead of a prince tribute record or any other tribute record for that matter

man, i guess he only played "smooth" for the first west coast dates of the voodoo tour pt 1. someone's gotta have some video of that!

i was amazed at how the soultronics replayed that beat. it made me appreciate early premier/gangstarr more.

esp not as a version meant to sound like the time (it just sounds like a weird mash up now). its not that strong a song in the first place, but instead of speeding it up, they should make it more of a crawl, emphasise the stoner-ish elements of it. it is a song about weed after all.

Can't believe I missed the show, I've been waiting for him to come to Copenhagen since forever, and then he ends up performing there while I'm spending a year in the states. Worst thing is I'll probably be back in Europe by the time he tours over here... Anyway, here are some photos of much better quality than what has been posted so far.

BTW here's the legendary two-part interview with D by Swedish music journalist and expert on soul history Mats Nileskär recorded just before the Live at Cirkus 2000 concert. It's highly recommended, I've never heard D dig so deep into himself before. There's a bit of voice over in Swedish, but most of it and obviously the entire interview is in English.

He shoulda tried to sing this in his own voice rather than crossing his funk voice with a faux-Brit-alien one, Jimmy Fallon actually did a better job with this vocally on the Tebow thing.

Overall it's probably better left to Bowie but I'm sure cool to see in a show if I was actually in attendance, I'm wondering if D was reading that Mikael Gilmore Rolling Stone cover story on Bowie in the current issue that dropped likely right before he got on the plane overseas.

I know that's inspired me to go back on a Bowie kick in the past couple weeks.

Im not a real funk head therefore I wouldn't know if he sounded contrived or not, all I know is that it sounded good and fun ! As for the new songs, I don't know he needs a little bit more practice, it's really noisy at times but that last new funky song he played had everybody grooving !

He's hitting all the high notes from his studio versions of songs from the Brown Sugar album, over 15 years later, in the original keys. And D'Angelo was never known for having a "clear" falsetto - that bit of grit in there has always been there...

I really enjoyed the show. It's great to see D'Angelo back on stage having fun, he seemed genuinely happy to be there.

The band was tight, Chris Dave and Pino are beasts, but I already knew that. I'm just mad at the promoter for picking one of the worst venues in Paris, the sound was downright awful sometimes, and I was standing front row...

The keyboard set was one of the best parts, it made me think I'd love to see a full show like this in a jazz-club setting.
The new songs he played sounded great, I hope we'll hear studio versions of The Charade, Another Life and Sugar Daddy pretty soon.

To my fans: I suffered an ankle injury during my show in Paris last night. On the recommendation of my doctor, I was forced to postpone my show in Amsterdam tonight, January 30th, and reschedule it for this Thursday, February 2nd. The rest of my European tour will go on as planned, including my concerts in Amsterdam tomorrow night, January 31st and February 9th.
My sincere apologies for any inconvenience this may cause, and thank you for your understanding. I look forward to rockin three memorable performances for my fans in Amsterdam tomorrow, February 2nd, and February 9th.
