i kinda dig that these big event artists are eschewing the instant gratification shit for the full album experience lately.

makes me wonder what Kanye has in the cards since he's worked w/ Daft Punk for his new shit. and you have to imagine he at least paid attention to 20/20 since he considers JT his biggest competition.

they nerfed the hell out of it for the radio.

edit 2: clearly they learned a lot from scoring Tron. i hear so much of that influence in this album.

Honestly I don't know. Everyone was hyping the song and its cool but I wasn't crazy about it. I'm not a big DP fan either so I'm not familiar with their sound. I only own one album and that's because an ex got it for me as a gift. This album is solid though. What's your take on it?

just the sheer simplicity of their songs (outside of that ELO Evil Woman sample for Face to Face ). Really simple but executed with perfection..fuck they were all samples too. First DP album where I was just fast forwarding thru alot of it, hoping to hear something.

it's just...not their best.

DP set a very high bar for their own work. LOL. this is no 'Around the World' or 'Music Sounds Better With You' (i count that) or 'Harder Better Faster Stronger', IMO. but, again, i haven't heard 'Get Lucky' in a club setting.

i wasn't into 'One More Time' until i heard the extended version in a club. b/c that breakdown dominates. turns the thing into something other than a Dance song. i read DP say the meat of the song is purposefully that slow part. the fast part is the 'break'. i get it - they're playing w/my expectations. i get the art part of it. it's clever. but not satisfying when i wanna hear a Dance song or a House track. which is why the extended club version was preferable for me.

this 'Get Lucky'...it seems like it'd be boring to dance to. i dunno. i'm not so into it. plus i don't like Pharrell, generally.

fuck you.

But I'm white as hell, and N*E*R*D's debut was a 13 year old me's favorite album (vis-a-vis, Pharrell's Harder Better... remix was my favorite Daft Punk song for a few months).

THOSE HAND CLAPS!
im digging this edit ALOT
- it has a filtered intro ala Stardust's "music sounds better with you"
- those strings! ( gots that Rick Astley "never gonna give you up" kinda feel )
- the drums are more prominent, sonically fits with the guitar and added strings, which helps the groove out even more

overall its the little nuances that were added on this edit that just take this to another level..Daft Punk better be smart and get this guy on the official remixes with proper Pharrell vocals ( maybe resung )

i really dig Giorgio by Moroder, Within, Instant Crush, Touch, and Beyond.

the rest are dope too, but those stick out a lot. i like the feel of this album though, it's a refreshing departure from most of the stuff that's out these days.

I hate to be a prog cunt, but it's gotta be said. "Fragments of Time", "Doin' It Right" and "Giorgio", to pick a few, are sort of ruined to my ear. It sounds like an amateur drummer playing the kit, perhaps one of the robots.

I still love "Touch" tho, and a few of the songs have a lot of potential for remixes. Meh.

Kinda plays like a lecture about the 70s. My immediate impression is how it isn't particularly danceable. Some yacht rock influence here for sure too which I wasn't prepared for. I'm gonna give it some more time though. There's a buttload to digest here.

there will be daft punk remixes

In a BBC Radio 1 interview with Pete Tong over the weekend, the Frenchmen revealed the act lined-up to lead the charge of Random Access Memories reworks is – ta-da! – Daft Punk themselves.

After talking through making the album, not touring and Random Access Memories’ A-list rollcall of collaborators, conversation turned to their remix plans. “How about remixes?” Pete Tong asked at the tail end of his 15-minutes with the robots. “We’re working on some mixes ourselves,” Bangalter answered. “So yes, there will probably be Daft Punk mixes of Daft Punk. Usually we never mix ourselves, that’s something we feel we’re interested in doing this time.”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=EZoUVnmr4Qc

the rest of the interview is really interesting also.

47. "so who yall want remixing these? i just A&R'd a whole remix album"
In response to Reply # 0

in my head of course.

1. Give Life Back to Music (Hot Natured RMX) obvi

2. The Game of Love (Gesaffelstein RMX) - very dark sounding, begging for driving, harsh French electro-fication

3. Giorgio (Claude VonStroke RMX) - i actually really like this track but the drums are really thin sounding. as an overreaction id like to see mr dirtybird fatten this up on the bottom end. a thumpier rhythm and the original would have been fine.

4. Within (Carl Craig RMX) obvi pt 2

5. Instant Crush (DJ Fresh RMX)- i like this track but its a remix album, so we're turning the energy up a bit

6. Lose Yourself to Dance (Busy P RMX) - this track comes closest to the Daft Punk i love. maybe their old manager can put it over the top.

UPDATE: jesus these originals are frustratingly close to being awesome. all the elements are there, but they just dont click for me as a finished product.

7. Touch - what the fuck man. if you're gonna get the guy from Love Boat to sing the song dont have the song sound like the fucking Love Boat song!! This is a problem and im gonna have to call in a specialist to save this from itself. (Derrick Carter RMX)

8. Get Lucky - heard this in a club in Vegas on a good sound system and it totally changed my impression of the song. Pharrell's voice needs a little...softening...and shouldnt drive the melodic progression imo. That being said there is really only one act i would trust to do the minor tweaking it needs. (Daft Punk VIP)

9. Beyond - needs less blue eyed soul-ish polish and more primal, druggy, sex appeal. Done and done. (Wolf + Lamb RMX)

10. Motherboard - the first one i legitimately dont like. Although i bet that break could be nasty reconstructed by the right guys. Someone from Hospital Records id say. (Cyantific, Logistics, or High Contrast. whichever.)

11. Fragments of Time - this sounds like a sitcom theme song. from 25 years ago. i keep thinking Bronson Pinchot is gonna walk through the door of my office, spill something, then look up and smile about it. that being said, there are some elements and Todd Edwards' involvement makes this a no-brainer (MK Dub)

12. Doin It Right - TNGHT RMX. boom.

13. Contact - seems to be some doubt as to whether or not ive heard the updated version. assuming i have...it needs a sustained groove. badly. I think id go with a straight ahead techno guy. (Stacy Pullen RMX)

man i was REALLY looking forward to this record when i first heard about it, but i will never listen to it all the way thru again. honestly, Derezzed is better than anything on this album, and i never would have thought but Chris Malinchak's "So Good to Me" is going to rightfully overtake Get Lucky on the UK Top 40 before R.A.M. even comes out.

better luck next time boys

i think DP has its Dance Music cred largely b/c of the 1st album and maybe that live album (Alive 2007). the rest of them aren't as Dance-heavy.

i remember cracking the fuck up over 'Something About Us' on Discovery b/c it was so odd at the time for DP to release a str8 up R&B slow jam. i figured they were taking the piss. but now? not so much. the group doesn't make Dance Music. at least not exclusively or even primarily. that i keep expecting Dance Music out of them is my fault. i shouldn't.

fuck you.

there were a couple ballads but to me, the rest of it was shockingly similar to whats big in house music right now

i know a lot of people have mixed thoughts about human after all, but its honestly my favorite DP record and until the last track its just energy on top of energy.

but...they're not. IMO their best stuff is str8-up House. when they stray from it i'm disinterested, not b/c i don't like the genres they explore but b/c they're not good at making that music, IMO. like, when i wanna hear a Rock record, i'm not reaching for Daft Punk. ditto w/Disco or R&B slow jams or even Techno.

note: awesome production on this RAM album. it all _sounds_ nice. even the stuff i don't like.

Because they had some high highs in the past. Truth is I was just hoping for some good house and disco jams so that when I am dragged to those douchebag clubs, I know I'll hear a dance song that I'll like at some point in the night. Honestly Daft Punk and BEP have saved my life by making high quality music with a groove that crosses over well.

I'd rather just have straight house music though but it's not always on the menu at these spots.

but, I enjoyed it. Couldn't say I loved it, but I'm not sure I've ever LOVED a Daft Punk album. They've always been a singles group to me. It certainly doesn't feel like it's capturing the world like Discovery did, but I think it's cool that a group mostly known for dropping four and oontzing their way around the dance floor for 7 minutes went ahead and said, "yea but wasn't the funk/disco era that birthed all that pretty damn fun too?"

If I remember right, Ryan Dombal put it pretty well on that huge Pitchfork article's opening headline.

Sounds like they hired an amateur lounge drummer and forgot to mic his bass drum.
Some of the songs sound sonically thin. You can almost here the spectrum gap that is usually filled up when samples/loops are used. Melodically, some songs sound like extrapolations of each other. The "Get Lucky" song which I thought was just a nice teaser for more to come ended up being one of the top tracks on the album. (Not surprisingly the drums were tightened up on this)

Everybody is talking about how the whole album is ripe for a remix. That's just a polite or subconcious way of saying it did not quite deliver. Daft Punk has had a plethora of hits that did not need to be remixed and now they just dropped an album with only three singles on it.

I will applaud them for sticking to their vision even though it did not yield great results. As bland and safe as this album sounds, it is cohesively bland and safe. For what it lacks, there really does seem to be intent behind it.

Daft Punk is huge. Almost too big to fail so they will get the benefit of the doubt that will ensure that people try to like it as much as possible.( If half the songs on this album came up blindly on spotify playlist, I think most would be skipped if they were credited to an unknown artist) I am not that type of fan anymore. I call it like I see it when my favorite artists ain't coming with it.

6/10

i mean i dont hate it but its very much throwaway. like they did it in one day and didnt even bother trying to make it better. still sounds like a rough draft. im not annoyed that it didnt sound like discovery, that it was all angry rock sounding, it just wasnt very well crafted. you expect a bit more thought from a daft punk album.

120. "Daft Punk P4K cover story outtakes"
In response to Reply # 0

it's kinda funny to see legends of music gushing over the robots like this. sometimes i forget that there's some wicked talent behind those masks.

http://pitchfork.com/news/50746-daft-punk-cover-story-outtakes/

Here are a few bonus details and quotes from Daft Punk and some of their Random Access Memories collaborators that didn't quite fit into our Cover Story:

The murky opening of "Touch" is a direct homage to the following scene in Phantom of the Paradise, in which Paul Williams is seen "tuning" the Phantom's voice (which is actually Williams' voice):

Number of separate recording tracks used to make "Touch": 250

Paul Williams: "By working behind the robotic masks, Daft Punk are saying, 'Know us for our work.' For our creative spirit, there is great value in being able to observe without being observed."

Thomas Bangalter on drummer Omar Hakim's playing on the second half of "Giorgio by Moroder": "I remember going to him and humming this really complicated drum and bass programming and he's like, 'Like this?' He's doing it exactly like I hummed but like 10 times beyond. It felt like, 'Whoa! What have we been missing being limited by our own programming skills?' He probably only did two takes for that part."

Giorgio Moroder on telling his 23-year-old son about his plans to initially meet Daft Punk two years ago: "He had gone to see them at Coachella as a teenager and loved it so much. So when I told him that I was going to have lunch with them, he said, 'I have to come.' I said, 'I don’t know if they want you there.' But he said, 'I don’t care, I'm coming with you.' He was so impressed-- now, suddenly, I am somebody to him."

Effervescent elixir Daft Punk gave a tired Pharrell to revive him enough to write and sing his part on "Get Lucky": Guronsan

Chilly Gonzales on his experience playing piano on "Within": "I felt like an actor doing a walk-on in a blockbuster movie. In my fantasy, my contribution is like that Christopher Walken scene in Pulp Fiction with the watch."

Nile Rodgers on the creative role of a producer/composer: "You can always visualize a producer the same way you would think of Beethoven-- he can write the Ninth Symphony, but he needs a symphony orchestra to play it. So if you're the composer, or the creator, or the curator, or whatever the hell you want to call it, that's what your job is: to give the public the finished work. I like to be thought of as a virtuoso, and I also want to hire virtuosos to do the creative parts that I've constructed. And that's what Daft Punk have done impeccably with this album. The highest form of composing is when your ego is out of the way."

Daft Punk's favorite superhero movie franchise: Superman

The last song conceived for Random Access Memories: "Doin' It Right", featuring Panda Bear.

Panda Bear on writing relatively straightforward lyrics for "Doin' It Right": "I was really trying to hit a target that was perfectly in the middle of us. I definitely felt like I was out of my comfort zone, but that's ultimately what the whole song is about."

The direction Daft Punk gave Todd Edwards for his vocals while recording Discovery's "Face to Face": "Can you sing a little raspier, like Foreigner?"

References Daft Punk gave Todd Edwards for inspiration going into the recording of RAM's "Fragments of Time": The Doobie Brothers and Michael McDonald

The first time Bangalter played RAM for DJ Falcon in his studio, the speakers blew out as the album's last track, "Contact", came to its climactic finale. "You don't need speakers anymore!" Falcon, who co-produced "Contact", recalls saying. "Let's burn the studio!"

Bangalter on why his Stardust project with Alan Braxe and Benjamin Diamond only released one single, the 1998 hit "Music Sounds Better With You": "That song's destiny was so accidentally amazing that we decided for it to be the most uncompromising or pure one-hit wonder-- there couldn't be any second attempt. What always depressed me about one-hit wonders was that after that one hit you always had a second attempt, and it becomes this sad moment. It's like one track too much."

Fun fact: Though "One More Time" was released in 2001, Bangalter says the track was "mixed and finished and sitting on a shelf for three years before that."

Nile Rodgers on his ability to essentially play both lead and rhythm guitar parts at the same time: "When I was producing a record with Eric Clapton once, I was sitting in the control room and playing the full arrangement for him. I wasn't actually playing what I was going to play on guitar or what he was going to play, but rather an overview of both. After I did it, Eric looked at me and said, 'Nile, what the hell am I going to play?' I laughed and said, 'Man, I'm showing you the whole arrangement, but believe me, I'm not going to play that-- that sounds corny as shit to me. It's the full song, but it's not funky.' But Clapton thought it sounded hip."

Chilly Gonzales on the potential impact of Random Access Memories: "It will lead many musicians out of the cul-de-sac they currently face. And those that do not understand will be cursed to make disposable music on laptops forever."

In response to Reply # 124

Pendulum can actually pull off the live band aspect. Pendulum is like an amalgamation of Foo Fighters / The Prodigy / Subfocus all rolled into one. One of the few hybrid electronic / live bands that actually sound and perform BETTER live

Pendulum cover of The Prodigy's Voodoo People
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvP5Tp-CLtQ

I think if Daft Punk tries to pull off a live tour, those cats are gonna fall straight on their faces. Should stick with what they know and work those Ableton rigs and pretend to be out of this world with those extravagant tour stages and lights. The presentation is more effective than their technique

i love the new vampire weekend too.

put it this way- i went to actually buy the daft punk album on release day. local record store sold out- she had to send me to target (i'm on a business trip right now), no choice.

stacks of vampire weekend at both places. got last copy of daft punk at target.

if daft punk goes on tour- radiohead levels of trying to get tickets.

so relevance- i don't think vampire weekend has quite the following or anywhere near the impact that daft punk has. and i love both bands... just saying.

we all have different opinions and it's valuable to listen to them, if only to get to know your own better.

and it's not like the album is critic-proof. the drums are really lacking throughout - and that's a big fucking deal.

In response to Reply # 0

warning: gushing praise is about to occur. and it's looooooong

http://www.inthemix.com/features/55309/Not_everyone_understands_The_genius_of_Random_Access_Memories?page=1

This story begins as so many others must: with an in-depth analysis of a DJ Sneak tweet.

This week, after Daft Punk began streaming their latest album Random Access Memories (you may have heard of it), as the penultimate stroke in has to be the most diabolically clever marketing campaign in human history, the Chicago-house gangsta and impresario posted the following on Twitter:

Not Everyone Understands Daft Punk Music, It’s A Spiritual thing> A Robot thing> a Soul thing. great Job guys> the story continues.

In case you missed it, the reference is to Eddie Amador’s 1998 single House Music – a movement-defining anthem from an era when the pre-helmet Daft dudes were just starting to make waves on the international scene along with their French brethren like Bob Sinclar and Alex Gopher. “Not everyone understands house music – it’s a spiritual thing, a body thing, a soul thing.” For a house-head like Sneak it’s the ultimate compliment.

If reading news posts on inthemix has left you with the conclusion that Sneak is an unforgiving bastard who lives to torture European dance-music wannabes – well, you’re probably right. But why doesn’t Daft Punk fit into his axis of evil that includes Swedish House Mafia and now Seth Troxler? Why does one of the most overexposed acts on the planet – and Euro as they wanna be – get a free pass from the arbiter of underground cool? And why does Sneak seem to be indicating that this radically ambitious collection of polished pop, Euro-disco and indie-R&B qualifies as house in the first place?

I’ll get to the issue of why Random Access Memories is a supremely house album despite the fact that it doesn’t contain one housey-house dancefloor-first 125-bpm track later. First, let me tell you a badly kept secret about house music. Real house-heads, no matter how hard or ghetto they may seem, are big softies, pussycats at heart. They don’t judge by race, sexual orientation, creed or border. They only care about one thing: how the music sounds, preferably in a darkened basement. And they tend to be equally passionate about any kind of good music, made by anybody, from the Doors to Depeche Mode, as long as it carries a certain intensity of feeling.

(I should mention that the saltier side of Sneak did show up when a follower tweeted a reply, inarticulately questioning his agenda in promoting this admittedly over-hyped album. Sneak, who after all collaborated with the Daft gang years ago, snarled: “I’m going to ignore your ignorance you Lil prick. U know nothing about nothing.”)

As I write this, thousands gather in Wee Waa, Middle of Nowhere, Australia, for the official launch of an album that’s been available for free everywhere for days. It is, for some reason, the most-publicised event since the last royal wedding, or maybe since the invasion of Normandy. Perhaps some fans will pause to flick the hay out of their hair and wonder what it all means. To me it sounds like ultimate redemption for a distant musical era – an era for which ‘disco’ is a convenient but limiting tag.

In 1979, in one of the most notorious incidents in American pop-culture history, 50,000 people flooded the gates of Comiskey Park in Chicago for ‘Disco Demolition Night’. A radio shock jock named Steve Dahl rallied the frenzied multitudes, mostly young white guys, into chanting “Disco sucks! Disco sucks!” as a crate containing the offending vinyl was dynamited on the baseball field; the scene then escalated into a near-riot.

Today this explosive moment is widely seen as a paranoid and resentful backlash against the black, Latin and gay subcultures that disco represented in a society divided along hard economic and racial lines. “It felt to us like Nazi book-burning,” Chic mastermind Nile Rodgers has said. (Sneak, née Carlos Sosa, would have been about 10 and living not far away on the South Side.)

A little bit younger than Sneak, and probably a lot more sheltered, I was blissfully ignorant of such tension. My musical memories of that era are of spending hours in my cousin’s bedroom in Oregon, listening and dancing to 7” singles of hits by Blondie, Lipps, Inc. and a little act known as the Bee Gees – or watching Dionne Warwick introduce the same acts on Solid Gold. Hugely popular but undeniably weird tracks like Heart of Glass and Funkytown were readily digestible by my young psyche but contained a mystery and fascination that would eventually open up a larger world for me.

But the backlash against disco and the excesses it represented was very real – if not always as violent as Disco Demolition Night. Soon it just wasn’t cool anymore to be as fabulous and free as John Travolta’s symbolic working-class kid in Saturday Night Fever. The word ‘disco’ itself became a joke. Queen, Kool & the Gang and Donna Summer had to adapt or fade into obscurity. Rodgers and his partner Bernard Edwards fell so out of favour in the music industry that they “couldn’t get arrested.”

The economic realities of the early ’80s dictated a pop mainstream that was safer, more straitlaced. Michael Jackson, Prince and Madonna waged heroic efforts to shake us out of it, of course. And incredible things were happening on the New York and Chicago undergrounds – but it would be quite a while before I was aware of that.

Fast forward a bit, and my high-school punk-and-alternative self unquestioningly scorned the grandiose, inclusive pop of the ’70s. I had to be awakened by hip hop before I began to understand what had been lost. Along with many of my generation I was astonished at the warm, organic sampled sounds of the ’70s on revolutionary albums like 3 Feet High and Rising and Paul’s Boutique. Later I was liberated by house and began to learn about its roots in funk, disco and garage. But through all this I was increasingly alienated by the concept of “pop music.” When I would discover that a certain cherished De La Soul sample was a Hall & Oates hit from my childhood; or when a DJ would drop Michael Jackson into an after-hours set, I may have felt a twinge of nostalgia but didn’t glimpse reconciliation.

Nor did I sense it in Daft Punk’s early singles, however striking and original they were. Da Funk’s incendiary combination of disco, tech and acid disrupted the flows of many of an earnest house DJ in 1995 – it was plain hard to find a record to match its energy; while the B-side, Musique, almost single-handedly invented ‘French house’ as we know it, with its brutal percussion and heavily filtered but wonderfully tuneful disco loops. This audacious sound dovetailed with the no-nonsense funk and tough beats unleashed by second-gen Chicago and Detroit producers like Sneak, Moodymann and Glenn Underground that I was going crazy for. Thomas Bangalter’s splendid solo efforts – harder and more minimal – were more evidence these guys were the real shit.

I’ll never forget when Homework came out in 1997. My DJ partner from Brooklyn excitedly rushed over to my place with fresh copy just so he could play me Revolution 909. I couldn’t believe that a band from Paris with such a daft name had clarified our collective deep-house aesthetic so perfectly – working on a major label at that. That track became one of the anthems of our outlaw loft parties, from its police sirens to the icy rustle of its classically executed high hats to its deliciously melodic bassline and keyboards – never failing to get hands reaching for the ceiling.

Soon French house seemed to take over the scene; no other set of producers seemed so consistently willing to combine respect for the old school with such a fearless and crazy production aesthetic. I had as many French records as the next guy; but I admit I started to burn out in 1998 when Stardust’s Music Sounds Better With You became such a club smash. I loathed that tune at the time. Something about its cheeky lounge-lizard absurdity was too perfect a soundtrack for the druggy emptiness of the scene at its worst.

It took a couple of years for me to finally appreciate it – hearing it played between innings one sunny afternoon at a packed Yankee Stadium, of all places, something crystallised and I suddenly got it. I realised then that this loopy European club music had the potential to be the kind of bright, bold pop the mainstream was sorely lacking.

All these years and a Gap ad or two later and here we are; EDM’s gone Vegas, and Daft Punk are bigger than the Beatles, or so the hullaballoo would lead us to believe. When I dutifully downloaded Random Access Memories just like everyone else in the world the other day I had no expectations at all; despite my respect for Daft Punk’s history and their hard work, I expected it to be hopelessly compromised, pop in the worst sense, a plastic object, interesting, colourful, but inert and useless. Imagine my shock to discover an album so vital, original and heartening – and pop in the best way.

Why not though? Think about the names involved: Giorgio Moroder, Nile Rodgers, Pharrell Williams. Three of the most influential dance-pop producers of the past 40 years are aboard to help Daft Punk craft what seems not only a career-defining statement, but a manifesto of an art form. This is explicit on Giorgio By Moroder, in which the legendary producer recounts the tale of the beginning of his career in the German discotheques of the late ’60s. It effectively ties Random Access Memories to the last half-century of music history. The track itself symbolically demonstrates this – it’s a jaw-dropping epic that starts as a lovely Moroder-esque techno-jazz garage jam before ascending to crazy orchestral prog-rock heights.

The entire album is marked by similarly grand tributes – especially the sophisticated disco-pop fusion of the three cuts co-written by Rodgers, who serves as the album’s godfather. The result is an artifact, like an audio Rosetta Stone, that if transmitted to the rest of the galaxy (and you know they would do it if they had the means) could decode and explain what dance music was like on Planet Earth during an entire epoch.

But it’s not even limited to dance music as we think of it. Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac and Steely Dan are also obvious influences; as are Elton John, Prince and OutKast. ...Memories is no more interested in being exclusively tied to the dancefloor than Michael Jackson was in his heyday – and suffice it to say the Daft boys work hard on a contemporary version of that perfect combination of dance, jazz, rock and pop that Quincy Jones achieved on those albums. ...Memories’ wild ambition is part of the story of course – it seeks to be nothing less than the Sgt. Pepper’s of dance music. Whether it succeeds or not will be argued till the fans get tired and go home; the conversation alone is testament to how good an album we have here.

The title of the project alludes to the struggle to process human experience in an age overwhelmed by technology. The elemental song titles say a lot: Touch, Within, Beyond, Contact. The lyrics are all about the simple yearning for human connection, and once found, celebrating it on a dancefloor. As basic as that sounds, it’s potent in these crazy times.

In a week that saw a victory for Monsanto in its campaign to control the world’s food supply with genetically modified crops, and a case involving corporate patenting of human genes come before the U.S. Supreme Court, there’s something sadly heroic about the title and refrain of the album’s opener, Give Life Back to Music. Sneak is right – it’s a spiritual thing. Meanwhile, the track is a suitable prelude to the journey to come: a heartfelt hybrid of disco, electro and rock, alternately cool and hot, with a richly layered live feel and uplifting lyrics to offset cartoonishly robotic vocals.

What’s so impressive is that, despite this monumental effort to summarise, to amalgamate, to pay tribute, there’s nothing at all watered-down, stiff or compromised about the music. For some reason it sounds like the freshest thing out there right now, in the mainstream anyway – as melodic as it is adventurous, as smile-inducing as it is surprising. It’s a tribute to the Daft boys’ savvy that their intense focus on studio craftsmanship doesn’t overwhelm the house-music production ethos of loose experimentalism and innovation.

The album is packed with interesting sonic detail and texture from start to finish, and it never sounds like they’re simply aping a specific style or era. Weird permutations pop up everywhere – on Instant Crush, the Strokes’ Julian Casablancas sings a pop ballad through a vocoder that sounds like androids covering early-’80s Hall & Oates – only if they were doing it in the early ’90s. And it’s exactly nothing like either the Strokes or Daft Punk.

There hasn’t been a ‘live’ house album this good since Nuyorican Soul – another era-defining collection marked by collaborations with musical titans (in that case, Roy Ayers, Tito Puente, George Benson and Jazzy Jeff among others). The two albums remind me a lot of each other, especially in their organic fusion approach that unites house with its 1970s roots while stretching its contemporary limits.

Or is it better to say house doesn’t have any limits? Yet another astonishing tune, Touch, features a guest vocal from 72-year-old Paul Williams. We’re talking the guy who wrote standards for Streisand, the Carpenters and Kermit the Frog; the guy who co-starred with Burt Reynolds in Smokey and the Bandit. Here he is, crooning “You’ve almost convinced me I’m real,” over a ridiculously over-the-top orchestral lounge-ragtime-country-electro-funk medley that sounds like something Isaac Hayes and Moroder might have collaborated on for the best imaginary Muppet TV special ever (with Abba as guest stars?), complete with honky-tonk steel guitars and a choir. And when Get Lucky evolves out of this madness, it sounds like the most natural thing in the world. It’s a quintessentially ‘house’ progression from an epic breakdown to a grinding dancefloor anthem.

No, there’s no ‘house’ on the album, if that means a certain BPM or a specific range of Beatport sub-genres. But in some ways there’s nothing more house than the album’s expansive sound. Listen to music heads who were there back in the day in New York’s proto-house era and they’ll describe David Mancuso and Larry Levan blowing minds on their huge sound systems with jams by Steve Miller, the Police, Pat Benatar, Dan Hartman, Stevie Nicks, and many other mainstream acts we don’t normally think of as house pioneers, next to the more obvious underground disco and early electronica.

There was no set tempo or style, and there was a spirit of adventure and an unpretentiousness that dance music has never fully recovered. Though in an age when fierce disco edits of Dolly Parton and Lionel Ritchie reside comfortably on the world’s turntables next to arpeggiated Norwegian electro and the xx’s R&B covers, maybe we’re moving in the right direction.

On this album it sounds like things have come full circle once and for all. It’s as if Daft Punk have set their coordinates back to that brief moment of freedom, when it was hard to tell the difference between rock and pop and funk and disco and even country – before things exploded, before music fans split into hundreds of tribes that began to regard each other with permanent suspicion. It’s as if they’re on a mission to re-unite the tribes, re-unite every sphere of pop music – even pop at its most earnestly white and primetime-schmaltzy – under the all-inclusive banner of house. And it sounds absurdly perfect.

This is why the massive marketing megalith behind this phenomenon, and the unprecedented global hysteria, is…well, it’s not exactly OK with me; but as long as it has to exist, the music might as well be this good.

The universal appeal of this stuff is not only deserved but well-timed. These guys have come along with their analogue synthesizers and their robot costumes and placed themselves, like a postmodern Trojan horse, right into the middle of a frighteningly inhuman mass culture with the most intensely human music that could be imagined right now.

It must feel like a triumph for Rodgers, 30 years after he was left out in the cold by the ‘death’ of disco and a fickle music business. When it comes to chart-topping sounds, if the choice (for us, or for the aliens listening in on the transmission) is between Random Access Memories and something else – say mindless EDM on the one hand and The Voice on the other – we’d have to take this every time, are you kidding? And no doubt somewhere beyond Wee Waa there are eight-year-old cousins dancing to it in their bedroom and having new worlds opened up to them.

the idea that the album is too sophisticated for some people is kind of a joke, and DJ Sneak is turning into kind of a douche; the seth troxler thing verged on weird.

i dont understand why the duality drawn between top40 electrohouse and Random Access is necessary at all, either. just within dance music there are a lot of things i would choose over top40 electrohouse AND RAM

im interested to see how many times i hear a song off this album at Movement Detroit this weekend, or if i do at all

It happens. Your favorite band disappointed on their latest album. You don't have to right an essay of bullshit trying to convince your ears that it is an good album. Last time I check house sounded an certain way. Like is anyone going play anything from this album in a house set. I wouldn't unless you want to be laugh out the DJ booth. Homie sounding like Andre 3000 on the beginning of Rosa Parks. I don't have expand my horizons to realize that Daft Punk didn't make an House Album. They make a bad Pop album with live instrument that sounds very bland and boring. I think they realize it too and will come with the heat next time. Even Daft Punk themselves doesn't want to tour for this boring ass album. I'm go listen to some "real" House music because Daft Punk isn't making it anymore.

One of the worst albums of the year. It's not EDM. It's not even Disco like some of its detractors are claiming. It's like these niggas tried to make a Bootsy Collins album. These niggas need a new vocoder, too. They sound like the niggas from Autotune The News. And I'm tired of niggas acting incredulous when I say I don't like the album. "You don't like the new Daft Punk?!?!?" No! And neither do you niggas. That's right, I'm calling shenanigans on this bullshit. I was ridiculed on these boards years ago for saying I liked these guys and now all of a sudden they're everybody's favorite band. We don't believe you. Daft Punk needed more people cuz their previous album sales don't correlate with all you niggas who claimin them now. The only reason RAM is getting such great reviews is because of all these niggas who slept on them for the past ten years and now wanna play revisionist history. It's like when Tha Carter III got all those great reviews even though heads knew it wasn't better than I or II.

Artist: Daft Punk
Album: Random Access Memories
Label: Columbia 2013

By Mark Richardson; May 20, 2013

Rating 8.8

In the electronica landscape of the 1990s, Daft Punk first came over as a novelty. Funny band name, funny sound, funny masks, and a funny (and incredibly fun) hit called “Da Funk”, found on their debut album, Homework. They’ve come a long way since, but the playfulness remains, and so does their ability to surprise. Every new step in their career, whether positive (the landmark Discovery, their life-altering pyramid live shows), negative (the inert Human After All, their forgettable score for Tron), or somewhere in between (the film Electroma) has been met initially with a collective sense of puzzlement: “Now what’s this all about?”

Random Access Memories, the fourth proper studio album from Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, continues the trend. But the differences between their first three albums and this one are vast. RAM finds them leaving behind the highly influential, riff-heavy EDM they originated to luxuriate in the sounds, styles, and production techniques of the 1970s and early 80s. So we get a mix of disco, soft rock, and prog-pop, along with some Broadway-style pop bombast and even a few pinches of their squelching stadium-dance aesthetic. It’s all rendered with an amazing level of detail, with no expense spared. For RAM, Daft Punk recorded in the best studios, they used the best musicians, they added choirs and orchestras when they felt like it, and they almost completely avoided samples, which had been central to most of their biggest songs. Most of all, they wanted to create an album-album, a series of songs that could take the listener on a trip, the way LPs were supposedly experienced in another time.

Daft Punk, in other words, have an argument to make: that something special in music has been lost. You can’t have an argument without a thesis, and they start the album with one called “Give Life Back to Music”. The song’s opening rush brings to mind “old” Daft Punk, but then come percussive guitar strums courtesy of Nile Rodgers followed by orchestral surges. From the jump, it’s clear that the particulars of the sound are important. In a strictly technical sense, as far as capturing instruments on tape and mixing them so they are individually identifiable but still serve the arrangements, RAM is one of the best engineered records in many years. If people still went into stereo shops and bought stereos regularly, like they did during the era Daft Punk draw from, this record, with its meticulously recorded analog sound, would be an album to test out a potential system, right up there with Steely Dan’s Aja and Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon. Daft Punk make clear that one way to “give life back to music” is through the power of high fidelity.

Another way is to work with artists young and old who have inspired them. Rodgers pops up again on “Lose Yourself to Dance” and “Get Lucky”, and on both songs he’s joined by Pharrell on lead vocals. These two songs basically find Daft Punk attempting to make their version of a Chic song, which, in itself, is not a particularly notable goal. But the French duo’s craftsmanship carries the day. Pharrell, despite being the biggest contemporary star on the album, sounds anonymous-- his vocals are pretty much just functional. But even that is arguably in line with Daft Punk’s reverence. Disco, after all, was often a producer’s medium, and lead singers weren’t necessarily meant to be the the focus of attention. So it comes back to songwriting and production: How strong is the groove, how memorable are the hooks? “Get Lucky”, a deserved hit, works on both counts. “Lose Yourself to Dance”, on the other hand, is OK, but plodding, perhaps the weakest song on the record and a good example of the potential pitfalls of Daft Punk’s backward-looking approach.

Other songs in the record’s first half-- “The Game of Love”, “Within”, and “Instant Crush”-- don’t make a huge impression initially but are best understood as part of a broader whole. “Game” and “Within” are downtempo, slightly jazzy robotic soul, delivered in the kind of gorgeous vocoder that Daft Punk have perfected. Musically, “Instant Crush” sounds a lot like a great song by Daft Punk’s pals Phoenix, and the processed lead vocal from the Strokes’ Julian Casablancas holds a simple tune that’s catchier than anything he or his main band have managed in a while. All three tracks function well in the context of the record, throwing the tour-de-force “Giorgio by Moroder” into sharp relief.

“Giorgio” is a stunning piece of pop-prog that seems partly drawn from the groundbreaking producer’s experiments in long-form, epic disco, like his side-long version of “Knights in White Satin”. Moroder’s only contribution to the song is an interview that offers a thumbnail history of his life as a musician, one that recounts how how he heard the sequenced Moog as the future of music (see “I Feel Love”). The construction of “Giorgio by Moroder” is masterful, moving from easygoing beats to a for-the-ages, chill-inducing synth line, to orchestral crashes, to a brilliantly goofy guitar solo. It’s a fitting tribute to Moroder’s spirit and legacy.

RAM’s best songs come in its second half, another clue that it’s meant to be heard in full. It builds as it goes. “Touch”, the record’s literal centerpiece, is where things start to get interesting. It’s telling that the songs featuring the two oldest and deepest influences on the record-- Moroder and Paul Williams-- are the most over-the-top. (Williams' role in the 1974 cult film Phantom of the Paradise became an early obsession for Daft Punk.) These pocket symphonies allows the duo to take their concerns to the furthest reaches of ambition-- and good taste. “Touch” packs in a Cluster-fied spacey intro, some showtune balladry, a 4/4 disco section complete with swing music trills, and a sky-scraping choir, all in service of a basic lyrical idea: love is the answer and you’ve got to hold on. It’s strange, disorienting, and emotionally powerful, with a silliness that doesn’t undercut the deep feelings in the least. It encapsulates what makes Daft Punk such an enduring proposition: their relationship to cool. Their vulnerability comes from embracing cheese while also understanding the humor and playfulness in it, holding all these ideas in mind at once.

This quality is also heard in “Fragments of Time”, featuring lead vocals by legendary house DJ Todd Edwards. The laid-back melody embodies another often disparaged musical moment: 70s singer-songwriter excess that East Coast critics liked to write off as the sound of El Lay-- the Eagles, Jackson Browne, Michael McDonald. Conveying the openness and innocence that marked pop radio as the 70s ended, “Fragments of Time” sounds something like a sequel to Discovery's “Digital Love”. Contrasting "Digital Love" and "Fragments of Time" also raises an interesting paradox: though everything about RAM, from the session musicians to the guests to the means of production, is meant to sound more “human,” the album at points sounds more sterile, almost too perfect. To my ears, this quality isn’t necessarily to its detriment, as much of its appeal ultimately comes from its surface beauty, the sheer gorgeousness of the overall sound. But I suspect this feeling is at the root of why, judging from early reviews, some listeners were underwhelmed.

The continual churn of the internet, experience tells us, favors quick connections, conveniences, ephemeral pleasures. But there are areas of culture popping up that seek to slow down, focus on details, and wallow in the kinds of media that it still takes money to create. This is the space that Daft Punk seek to occupy, which in and of itself can be seen as problematic. For those who embrace the more egalitarian approach to music production created by access to cheap tools and cheap distribution, Daft Punk’s mind-bogglingly lush record scans as elitist, possibly even dismissive of the creativity that is happening on a smaller scale.

To really understand where they’re coming from here, you have to go back to the height of the album era, which was really just a blip in pop music history. Three things made it different: 1) it was the time just before MTV; 2) it was the time just before the CD; 3) it was the time just before the Walkman. All three hit around the dawn of the 80s and had a profound influence on how recorded music was experienced. MTV, in addition to foregrounding the visual presentation of artists, returned music to a singles-focused realm. The CD did its part too, making skipping ahead so easy and allowing for the listener to jump around at will. (It also made artwork less important and introduced the idea of records as “data”.) And the Walkman's convenience opened up new spaces for listening while decreasing sound quality, a trade-off that has driven the technology behind popular music consumption ever since.

So RAM is best appreciated as a counter to these trends. It’s not that “all music should be this” but that “some music could be this.” By the time you make it to the album’s astonishing final stretch, it’s hard not to think that Daft Punk have succeeded at what they set out to do. The arrangements on "Beyond" and “Motherboard” are breathtaking, and Panda Bear, after many so-so collaborations, aces his vocal turn on “Doin’ It Right”, a terrifically uplifting bit of electro-pop.

And then it ends with “Contact”: It’s the most old-school Daft Punk song here, and it’s also the only one based on a sample, pulling its main riff from a 1981 song by the Australian band the Sherbs. Daft Punk and collaborator DJ Falcon first used “Contact” in a DJ mix in 2002, and now it finds its way on an album about time and memory in 2013. You get a feeling of time collapsing with it, seeing where Daft Punk have been and where they could go. “Contact” will likely close some future live multimedia extravaganza, and people will go insane, and they will return to this album with new ears. You never know, but my guess is that people will be listening to Random Access Memories a decade hence, just like we’re still listening to Discovery now. You’ll forget the YouTube interviews with the collaborators, you’ll forget the day they announced the suits, you’ll forget the day the “Get Lucky” snippet leaked, you’ll forget every rumor, you’ll forget the “SNL” commercials. But the record will remain, something that channels the past but sounds like little else right now, an album about rediscovery that's situated in the constantly-shifting present.

the only things im a bit lukewarm on are the proggier parts - why did they ruin the moroder song with an ending that sounds like muse?! but other than those moments, i really love it. the production is obviously modelled on the 70s/early 80s (though some of the drums i think dont sound a bit thin or not as heavy and fat as the rest at times), the songs have obv had a lot of time and care spent on them, and nile rogers just makes everything hes on sound good - i even like get lucky now (though i still hate pharrell). i do wish they had more drum machines at times like with the panda bear song, or done more actual electronic music as that is what they do best, but i cant begrudge them the retro direction, its done so well and it never feels 'worthy' or boring.

i did think before hearing it that it seemed like a step back, or taking the easy nostalgia route, and that if anyone could, or SHOULD, maybe take electronic music forward, it might be a group like DP (why moan in interviews that EDM all sounds the same and not make anything to show how it should be done?), but hey, maybe two guys nearing 40 can only keep doing that for so long (or maybe were too easy on innovators these days).

also, you could think of the album as a bit too 'something for everyone' but it all sounds of a piece, even the showtunes (paul williams>>>>). it all hangs together. theres this kind of innocence/playfulness to it which harks back to a previous era of pop - i like that theres no profanity on the album, nothing trying to be 'edgy', it takes pop back to an earlier time, even down to how they advertised it (though everyones written about that by now)

Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories
Totally undanceable, dafter than ever—and a wire-to-wire triumph.

Few albums this year have been more eagerly awaited than Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories, the French duo’s first studio album in eight years. A 15-second clip of the first single, “Get Lucky,” led to an avalanche of YouTube homages, loops, and remixes from fans desperate to make a meal from any bone Daft Punk tossed in their direction. “Get Lucky” was released in full last month, and the breezy, infectious disco hit seemed to be a good omen. But after the mountains of advance hype piled on Random Access Memories, the album itself—a wildly ambitious, slow-burning ’70s-style colossus that you can’t really dance to—came as a surprise. To some, it was a huge disappointment.

Random Access Memories is not a party record, to put it mildly. The album trades more in the tropes of limpid ’70s and ’80s soft rock and disco than it does in the more modern priorities of house and techno. Think moonlit drives in Los Angeles, palm trees, yacht rock, and windswept white beaches. Think Average White Band, the Doobie Brothers, Hall and Oates, and Fleetwood Mac. If that’s not your style, there’s an impressively grandiose ballad, “Touch,” that sounds like it could be in an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. Another song, with the teasing title “Giorgio by Moroder,” features legendary disco don Giorgio Moroder talking—talking!—about his long career.

Recent interviews with Daft Punk have been less than encouraging. Here they are, our guys Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, lounging by the pool in a fabulous house in Los Angeles, praising music made with “real musicians” and talking about how machines don’t have enough soul. For longtime fans of dance music, this sort of talk makes you queasy, uncomfortably echoing the rock guys who say “all techno sounds the same” and that “synthesizers aren’t real instruments.”

It almost felt as if Daft Punk, arguably dance music’s most famous ambassadors to mainstream culture, had betrayed us. Perhaps they had given up. Their 2005 album, the icy, brittle Human After All, was a letdown, and their 2010 film score for Tron: Legacy pointed to a more amorphous, less danceable direction. In a recent photo shoot, they posed artfully next to an 8-foot-high wall of flames—probably not breaking a sweat in glittering custom robot helmets and perfectly tailored sequined suits—reflecting the glamour and mythos of dance music while simultaneously distancing themselves from its present-day reality. But Random Access Memories makes more sense the more you listen. The impressive, absurdly expensive album—laced with orchestras, choirs, and big-time guest musicians (Nile Rodgers of Chic and Pharrell Williams, among others) is, oddly enough, the most Daft Punk album that Daft Punk has ever made.

Daft Punk’s penchant for soft rock and disco goes back to their earliest days. From the very beginning, they were voracious fans and consumers of old disco, funk, and rock records from the ’70s and ’80s, sampling bits of tunes by the likes of Barry Manilow, the Tavares, and Sister Sledge, and crunching them up into monster tracks that became quintessential Daft Punk hits.

On Random Access Memories, crafted almost entirely with “real instruments,” Daft Punk has taken its love for sampling to its logical, most literal conclusion. The duo best known for the sample-heavy dance music classics Discovery and Homework, for pumping out dance-floor anthem after anthem, has finally reached the next level—a level only accessible to those with access to million-dollar studios. In a way, Random Access Memories is “Teachers” writ large – the Daft Punk song from their 1997 debut, Homework, which name-checked a litany of their favorite musicians.

Here they’ve “sampled” the vintage production of their favorite records, using the same analog equipment, techniques, and musicians. Instead of sampling Chic, they brought in Chic co-founder Nile Rodgers to play guitar on two tracks. Instead of sampling Quincy Jones’ productions for Michael Jackson in the 1980s, they brought in the actual session musicians who played on the albums—including John J.R. Robinson, a drummer on Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall, and the guitarist Paul Jackson, who played on Thriller. They’ve “sampled” the clothes, too (Daft Punk’s tight sequined jackets resemble Michael Jackson’s) and the fonts (the cursive lettering on the cover of Random Access Memories resembles the cover of Thriller). Daft Punk even “sampled” their favorite movie—the 1974 Brian De Palma schlock classic Phantom of the Paradise—by inviting in Paul Williams, the movie’s composer and lead actor, to sing the album’s epic, melodramatic centerpiece, “Touch.”

Phantom of the Paradise is key to understanding Daft Punk’s aesthetic. In the movie, a nerdy songwriter is reborn as a phantom who attempts to exact revenge on an evil svengali record producer named Swan. In one scene in the movie, Swan traps the phantom—now wearing a tight black leather jacket and a robot helmet—in a sophisticated recording studio walled with racks of analog gear. The phantom, whose vocal cords have been destroyed, speaks through a talk box attached to his chest, sounding remarkably like a vocodered lyric in a Daft Punk song.

It’s easy to see why the rock opera was catnip for Daft Punk, who claim to have watched it more than 20 times—the movie is completely over-the-top, drenched in pathos, and layered with in-jokes and sideways references, much like the band’s music. Daft Punk’s black leather outfits in their 2006 feature film, Electroma, seemed inspired by the phantom. “Electroma is a combination of all the movies we like, paying a big, almost unconscious homage to them,” de Homem-Christo told Stop Smiling in 2008. “There are so many different influences: In the end, it becomes such a melting pot of everything that it resembles something else altogether. We love cinema the same way we do music—we’re from a generation that doesn’t segregate.”

“Touch” is the apex of Random Access Memories, the total realization of the album’s ambitious reach. There’s nothing cool about it, and it takes guts to make music like this in 2013 on such a grand scale. It’s Daft Punk’s love letter to Phantom of the Paradise, and it’s schmaltzy and deeply weird. The lyrics are, well, daft (“Touch, sweet touch/ You’ve given me too much to feel”), but the lyrics are beside the point; Williams’ graceful vocal delivery is awe-inspiring. It’s simultaneously melancholy and uplifting; the moment where Williams’ voice trails off and “Get Lucky” begins is a great moment in pop music.

Unlike, say, LCD Soundsystem—a band that also wore its influences on its sleeve—Daft Punk is doing all of this without a trace of irony. In “Giorgio by Moroder,” the duo records the storied disco producer speaking seriously about his life and work through three different microphones—each from a different era—before launching into a by-the-numbers Moroder disco homage. It’s so painfully literalist and earnest that you almost can’t help but laugh. Daft Punk’s best music has always been about unabashed sentimentality—the over-the-top exuberance of “One More Time,” the wide-eyed, dewy emotionalism of “Digital Love.” In 2013, after years of fashionably ironic retro dance-rock, it’s a relief to hear retro-sounding music that sounds this sincere.

Random Access Memories includes contemporaries, too—indie-rock musicians like Panda Bear and Julian Casablancas of the Strokes, and longtime Daft Punk collaborators such as Todd Edwards and DJ Falcon. But Random Access Memories is more than a mishmash of its various collaborators and influences; it all sounds like Daft Punk. The moment midway through “Get Lucky”, when Pharrell’s vocals drop out and the robots take over, is the best moment of the song. The album is an artistic statement as goofy and overblown as it is courageous and charming, a total coherent synthesis of all things Daft Punk past and present. Random Access Memories is, in its own crazy way, a triumph.

i think they pro tooled parts of the album too much (you can hear it on touch too)

but other than the drums, and some of the rock guitar parts that sound too compressed, i cant complain about the production on this.

i cant think of another album in recent memory that sounded this good (regardless of whether you like the music or not).

there's barely any Disco on RAM. and the stuff that is there...Chic retreads and Moroder wannabes. why? when i can reach for actual Chic records and actual Moroder songs.

the record does sound good on headphones. the audio quality is impressive. but that doesn't matter much when the substance of the music itself doesn't move me.

ah well. the record ain't for me. it's not the end of the world.

what if i wanna hear some NEW disco? not just the classics. sure, i can play some old chic, old diana ross, or sister sledge, but those are still OLD - i want NEW disco. (and im not even that big of a fan of get lucky... its the other song with pharrell that kills, despite pharrell being on it).

and the disco songs on this are only 3. the moroder tribute is only 1. the rest is mostly in that kind of soft rock mode. which i happen to love. but i can see why others might hate it. the funny thing about the record is that yes, its retro, yes, its not exactly 'new' (apart from the panda bear song), but it never sounds just like a pastiche or a retread. its still daft punk. once people get over there 'its not discovery/homework' issues, they might be able to get into the album more.

the funny thing is, your constant complaints only serve to give the album more attention than you think it deserves.

continued adulation makes sense. incessant critique has a shorter life span, before it becomes self-defeating.

STILL DAFT! (BUT GUITARS
ARE BACK)
Daft Punk Remains #1, but Alice In Chains, John Fogerty, Little Mix Deliver Top 5 Debuts

June 4, 2013

Columbia's Daft Punk retained the top spot on our sales chart this week, adding another 92k to their boffo 325k bow (a 72% drop). But the helmeted ones are followed by an eclectic trio of debuts from a resurgent grunge band, a classic-rock legend and a distaff pop outfit.

Capitol rockers Alice in Chains blasted to #2 with The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here, moving 63k+ and proving that pissed-off dudes playing loud riffs can still make a serious noise at retail and e-tail. The band's prior release, 2009's Black Gives Way to Blue, bowed with 125k and eventually sold about 525k.

Coming in at #3 was Vanguard's John Fogerty, whose reworking of classic Creedence and solo material with a multiformat menagerie of duet partners sold north of 54k. His '09 set, The Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again, bowed with 20k and went on to sell over 100k.

Then there's Syco/Columbia's British femme foursome Little Mix, who formed, we're told, exclusively for the U.K. X Factor series, going on to become the first group contender to win. The pop gals saw 50k copies of their DNA album disappear.

The top 5 is rounded out by Capitol Nashville's Darius Rucker, who followed up his 77k, #2 bow with an additional 42k, a decline of only 45%.

Only two debuts remain in the Top 20, Def Jam/IDJ's The-Dream, who sold 22k of his IV Play (his 2010 release, Love King, debuted with around 60k and went on to sell 175k) and Paul McCartney & Wings' reissued Wings Over America (Hear Music), which fell just short of 20k. Meanwhile, RCA's Kid Ink (#27) made a mark with 14k and the Sony Masterworks Broadway soundtrack for multiple Tony nominee Kinky Boots (#46) strutted onto the chart with just shy of 8k.

The week's greatest gainer, with 40k+ (a 61% boost), was Warner Bros. Nashville's Blake Shelton, who benefited from a Voice-themed $6.99 weekend album sale at iTunes—as did the Adam Levine-fronted Maroon 5, who jumped 53% over last week with 15k.

Hitting this week, it's looking like a coronation for Matador's Queens of the Stone Age and another heavy rock record, ... Like Clockwork. This feat will mark the third recent upper-chart bow for a Beggars Group act (following on the heels of XL's #1 Vampire Weekend and 4AD's #3 The National). Other debuts include UMe's Megadeth, Capitol's Capital Cities, Vanguard's Barenaked Ladies, Rise's Sleeping With Sirens, Dine Alone's City and Colour and Glee star Matthew Morrison on 222/INgrooves.
