"Albums with the coolest backstories."

Kind of a spinoff of the "Stand" thread, where a poster said that people love to elevate music with a cool/heartbreaking/funny story involving it's creation.

I don't think it's a bad thing. An album to me is a snapshot of the artists life and mindset at that time, and knowing what went on behind the scenes can really help one appreciate the music itself.

Take for instance, David Bowie's Low. After reading the 33 1/3 book about the album, which chronicled Bowie's coke addiction, alcoholism, descent into depression and near insanity, and the creativity it inspired, which was buffered by Eno/Visconti. Knowing the details really helped me appreciate the music itself, now it's easily one of my favorite albums.

Some other examples are Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow (recorded in one 24 hour acid binge) and My Bloody Valentine's Loveless (19 studios, nearly bankrupted the label, Kevin Shields emerges with a rock masterpiece than subsequently falls off the face of the Earth.)

Any other ones you can think of?

The Stooges break up and Iggy goes off with Bowie. I don't remember how new collaborator/guitarist James Williamson joined up with Iggy but anyway, Iggy and James call for Stooges' Ron Asheton and Scott Asheton to join them after Iggy, according to Ron, auditioned practically all the drummers and bassists in England they possibly could.

In late 1970-early 71, the Stooges had a two-guitar line-up and an entire4ly ne4w4 se4t of songs with Williamson. It's not re4pre4se4nte4d on official albums but the4r4e's 1 (ONE!) extremely shitty-sounding live bootleg that showcase the band. Anyway, Iggy and Williams evidently hit it off as songwriters and Ron Asheton's role in the band was minimalized when they refor4med...

The 33 1/3 book on Endtroducing is crazy, definitely puts the album into proper perspective.

Paul's Boutique one is good as well, but knew most of the story as well. It was just cool to hear how they came up with the samples.

Bob Dylan, weary from touring and still recovering from his motorcycle accident, goes off to the Band's big commune/recording studio (the "Big Pink" referenced in the title of their first album) to basically drink beer, screw around with his friends and demo some new song ideas. The tapes get out and are heavily bootlegged for years. So much so, that a "highlights" reel is finally officially released as a two record set called 'The Basement Tapes.'

because for alot of artists, every album has an interesting backstory. if we knew more specific details behind Mos Def's True Magic maybe it would go from lackluster to very interesting really quick.

In response to Reply # 0

he went in disguise back to the hood in buffalo after putting out that corny "garden of love" aside from a couple of tracks on there, that flower power mess was soft and corny, so Rick hit the hood and got some Hood juice back in his soul and did a Rick James CSI Soul brother Mission to the Hood and that is how he got Street songs, by hanging in the projects on the move.

and I should have replied with that answer. The Wax Poetics where they put together interviews from Rick alongside fresh words from the Stone City Band and others with regard to that album was one of the greatest things I have ever read.

I can't remember the full details (maybe a more learned poster can help out) but like loveless it took several recordings sessions and millions to make. Brilliant album.

I remember reading about most of the issues in the in-sleeve booklet. I should dig the CD out but i think they chronicle in detail inside it.

Really great album my highlights are badman's song, seeds of love and swords and knives

The Mars Volta-Bedlam in Goliath...I haven't heard it, and I really wont listen after reading this.

On a trip in Jerusalem, Rodriguez-Lopez purchased an archaic ouija-type talking board at a curio shop as a gift for Bixler-Zavala. They would return to their tour bus after shows to play with it during their 2006 tour with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, as it quickly became the band's post-show ritual. Dubbed "The Soothsayer", the board revealed stories, gave names and made demands, as the band was contacted by three different people who appeared in the form of one, who was then referred to as "Goliath". The more the band interacted with "The Soothsayer", otherworldly coincidences began plaguing the band's experience writing and recording The Bedlam in Goliath: Blake Flemingtheir current drummer at the time quit mid-tour and left the band with financial troubles; Bixler-Zavala wound up needing surgery performed on his foot due to the shoes he had been wearing, forcing him to relearn how to walk post-surgery; audio tracks sporadically and literally disappeared from the studio's harddrives; Rodriguez-Lopez's home studio flooded and was subject to multiple power outages; and the album's original engineer went through a nervous breakdown, leaving behind all previous work with no notes as to where anything was. The engineer who quit stated to Rodriguez-Lopez: "I'm not going to help you make this record. You're trying to do something very bad with this record, you're trying to make me crazy and you're trying to make people crazy."

Rodriguez-Lopez was on the brink of starting the recording from scratch, but eventually kept on after recruiting Robert Carranza as a replacement engineer, along with assistance from Lars Stalfors and Isaiah Abolin. Midway through the recording sessions, Rodriguez-Lopez broke "The Soothsayer" in half and buried it in an undisclosed location as an attempt to undo the curse and halt the unforeseen tragedies. Rodriguez-Lopez swore never to give away the location of the burial, and also asked the band not to speak of it again during the remainder of the album's production.<[br />

35. "Fulfillingness First Finale"
In response to Reply # 0

After that car accident, Stevie stopped smoking weed completely(If I'm not mistaken) and also stopped toying with the idea of death, we all know what that obsession damn did to Marvin Gaye a decade later, and it near cost Stevie his life.

I think FFF reflected that, it still is a dark/haunting album to listen to, but in comparison to "Talking Book" & "Innervision", there's alot of hope whereas those album sounded like they were in the pits of the depression cycle.

Even though "Talking Book" is my fave from him.

In response to Reply # 0

royce was extremely depressed, a lot of it due to the fact his former friend/collaborater Eminem didnt sign him to his label. he'd get really drunk and record at like 2-4 am. it felt likle he was channeling biggie "life after death era" and "makaveli" era pac. it wasnt just him reciting their lyrics and working with their producers, it really sounds like he sincerely felt like he was those artists.

It's funny how on Death is Certain he has that line about Joe Budden making party music and how Royce is too dark.

Because since then Budden has only made dark/emo songs and Royce has been rhyming about his dick and hasn't really been too serious.

thinking back how he went to the public enemy camp for production back east and still had the album of the pulse back in 1990,at a time when it wasn't fashionable for both coasts to hit on tracks together and Cube made IMO his best album and he combined both worlds and added his own thing.

they were all sharing 12 piec bucket meals together ,cats had no loot it was a real team effort.

John mcclain the same man who help bring janet jackson's game to life and also closely associated with Michael jackson was pushing the chronic around town, but back then a heavy loaded album with that content was still taboo, it was alot of work to get that album a distrubtor.

Dre,Suge,Mcclain and others were working non stop to get that album out there. then you had Warren G who had his buddy Snoop Dogg being introduced to Dre and that clicked off, plus nate dogg and other folks came on board.

alot of work to make the songs, then to get an outlet,etc.... that was a wild time at death row
