"Cringe worthy songs by your favorite artist and any artist not have one?"

i was thinking about this the other night as i was listening to Marvin gaye and wondered out a loud did he have anything that anybody felt was cringeworthy? i know he has songs that i have heard people say were over played, and they even said were overrated, but Cringeworthy?

just curious now if there are songs by your favorite acts no matter what the style and when you hear the song by said act you almost have to run into the other room, because they are cringe worthy to you.

on that subject, "Dancing on the Ceiling" is probably one of the most dishonest Lionel Richie singles he ever released. Like I said, it starts off with jive talk that makes you THINK it's gonna be some "fun" shit, and then... OH MY GOD WHAT IN THE HELL IS THIS, NO LIONEL NOOOOOOOOO....

and to make matters worse that's the flagship song of the album. It's "Miller-Boyett" Music at its finest... it doesn't sound like something he even wrote. It's a shame, because the rest of the album is more Lionel's thing, a lil adult contemporary spanning different song styles.

breaks and grooves compiled as one sonic cut. he did that cut and paste thing on "say you say me" where he stacked sounds and things together.

the album was very modern and yet it had the carry over formula from the previous 2. he always stayed in his lane.

is his actual singing/vocal arrangements.
it's the melodic arrangements that are stiff and take it out of "Lionel" territory, or at least what I had gotten accustomed to hearing since his Commodores days

I LOVE 'Say you say me'. So much so, I had to make an edit in order to delete the bridge (when the tempo gets faster) for my own listening pleasure.

The song could've used some better production. The instrument tones are pretty bad....the bell-heavy synth EP is something I've always hated about 80's music. But the composition is undeniable.

It's just.....why did he add that bridge with the tempo change? Cringe.

Edit: I dig 'Dancing on the Ceiling'. But I disagree that it has Richie trademarks. It kinda sticks out to me because there are no compositional curveballs in it. It's the only, completely, straight-forward song of his that I can think of that is solely groove and no trademark Ritchie changes.

(although Mr Red should get the credit for saying it sounds like the soundtrack of ABC's TGIF lineup, it hits home harder when you actually call out M-B by name)

I agree that whole song is so dishonest and uncomfortable... not to talk about the damn video with Lionel "dancing"!

on one of my favorite albums, LITE ME UP.

I kind of disliked the fact that he employed outside singers even if I did enjoy them, after he decided he was going to do full-on R&B, because that tended to dilute the Herbie-ness of his records.

However, I don't understand why he, or Narada Michael Walden, thought it was a good idea for him to sing "naked" on this track. The song would have been decent early-'80s R&B if not for that fact... this song should have remained an outtake and re-recorded with the vocoder.

I let "Paradise" slide because Dave Foster knew how to cover up Herbie's shortcomings as a vocalist, plus... the song is straight "Al Jarreau". Can't hate on that.

as for Marvin Gaye? Without a doubt, "Masochistic Beauty". The sheer 80s-ness of this song, the questionable lyrics. We know Marvin got "dirty" sometimes, but while this song was kind of funny, it was also cringeworthy. I don't think Marv really quite sounded right on that kind of production anyway... and I almost shudder to think what he would have sounded like as the decade went on. He, more than Stevie, sounded like a shadow of his former self in the 1980s for the short time he was there. Then again, none of those '80s production tracks on DREAM OF A LIFETIME probably would have been released if Marv had lived.

Herbie was trying to get his Quincy Jones on and being a limit vocalist he using outside vocalists was on some Q "the dude" type of thing and i saw that vision.

me and narada michael walden are hit and alot of miss. loved him best with Stacy lattisaw and angeli Bofil for "too tough" alone, hit and Miss with him on Aretha,Whitney and Mariah.

other things he was corny to me on production.

good call on that Marvin track because i use to crack up and I blame the drugs or lack of good ones Marvin was taking when that album dropped.

his narriative though use to crack me up with the tone and the way he said it over and over again.

80's Marvin with the Eugene Wilde gotta get you home with me vibe all through "midnight love" or his Rick James lite other grooves were a trip for back then.

but for all of that, that Star Spangled banner" performance at the 83 all star game where his singing seemed to enlighten Magic Johnson as the West went to town on the East was a true highlight and a great performance stood out and has stood the test of time IMO.

i know that Marvin was going to do a record with Barry white and in the 80's i don't think it would have been happenig because neither one of them was moving like there previous decade unless they did a all out throwback type of project. peace

That I saw, especially on LITE ME UP, because it sounds like Herbie's version of a Quincy Jones record, down to the heavy use of Rod Temperton on the songwriting side. It's kind of forgotten as is most of that 1978-82 era, because it didn't sell so well, but I actually like it more than his '80s Electro era, because under Laswell's production, Herbie sounded more straitjacketed than he ever did (until now, of course). You'd have to dig out the live performances of the Rockit band in that era, to hear more the "real" Herbie. There, the music had more of a "Cameo" vibe, with the Simmons drums, and Herbie using his vocoder not to sound like an evil robot, but an ill background vocalist.

>me and narada michael walden are hit and alot of miss. loved

Like, his group of hired hands. Freddie Perren and them. Even Freddie "Boom Boom" Washington (not the bassist, I mean Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs himself) was on his studio squad. I think Narada had some good stuff with Johnny Gill. Mostly the slow tracks ("Thank You" is one of my secret weapons). Uptempo shit was a mixed bag. He could make some boss "Quiet Storm" and fusion-styled music on his own records. But they all were a mixed bag that often missed a mark in a way I don't quite know where he was aiming. And when Narada tried to do more aggressive R&B, it was definitely corny as all hell...

yeah narada made me cringe with patti Austin and that is hard to do because I dig her a whole lot, but he did. Larence Hilton jacobs had a few albums out in the 70's and had a good voice.

he did Backup on RIck James Street songs album and Narada Michael Walden played drums on a cut on that album.

i use to have those Johnny Gill Jerri curl tapes way back in the day and there might have been a cut.

Herbie was a cat that adapted to changes much like Miles davis which depending on what circle you are in, good mean it was cool or could mean cringe all depends on whom you talk to.

i like Herbie with Groove unless him and chick corea are doing something similar in style,etc..

y'all can defend that with Prince "palming" that broad in the video all day, but that song was the absolute nail in the coffin of me taking Prince seriously... I remember when it came out, I was clowning Prince real hard, a trend that had started when "My Name Is Prince" came out and he had shown his ass in the chaps. Prince and rap music never really got along, despite the hints that maybe it might.

We all know via The Time's music he had a flair for the "street" and a potential to go there over the years, but really, when it comes to rap-styled music, Prince fell so flat. Prince lost a lot of that edge in the 1980s, the kind that brought him respect from both sides of the aisle as well as the middle... by the time the 1990s came along, the best songs on his records were undoubtedly the ballads.

there's a quick shot in that video,
and prince is on rollerskates, and a speedo, w/ a doo rag,
with his "masculine" beard...

and he is just doing one of those darling nikki screams with
his voice...

man... that was just, a disaster.

as said in that "Worst Nas Songs According To Complex" post, this is one of those times where David Bammer Doctrine is proven right; when rappers like Nas force their way into an uncomfortable sound for the sake of making records... we all lose.

"Big Girl" is also cringeworthy for the same reason.

"Rockin' It" + a wack interpolation of Alexander O'Neal + those jiggy-ass drums do not a hot, or even listenable song make

I really hated that era of "pop rap", not as much as OONTZ-OONTZ Rap & Bullshit but it was corny as hell. Give me MC Hammer over that bullshit any day.

In response to Reply # 38

Like, the sparse, cold '80s-ness of that production doesn't really fit Marvin, even if the vocals are on point.

Marv sounded a little dated by the time IN MY LIFETIME? hit but that was understandable since a lot of those songs were probably really recorded in 1979. It sounds more like that year to me. Only TV really kept the music that far back behind for the most part.

But MIDNIGHT LOVE sounds like Marvin just lost his touch. I like "Rockin' After Midnight". There's no real "live" feel, the thing that really made those Marvin records we love so much so special.

right.

that record sounds like a cocaine party that's been going on for too long. and i say that not just b/c of what i know about Marvin at the time but b/c i've been at a cocaine party that went on for too long and it really does feel like the feeling i get when i listen to that album. like i'm coming down unpleasantly or i'm about to.

music is a no no. gordon banks his music director and former Brother in law with that low fi sound and thing going. Marvin was high and must have said cool lets get this type of record. bottom line back then Marvin wanted some of that Rick James hit, but he wanted it to be accesible and he was like cool ok.

sexualy healing hasn't aged to me at all. i use to like it, but now i'm tired of it. but glad he was successful with it because he got robbed out of awards.

well, i've never been to a cocaine party,
but you're right about the music sounding distant and detatched.

but for me, that's a cool juxtoposition
since his voice is really soulfull while
the music sounds very cold.

i dig all of the rhythm parts weaving in and out.

the only song that i really don't like on that album
is "sexual healing," and i sort of hate that it's
one of the first songs lay people think of when they
think of marvin gaye.

then again, i also dig "in my lifetime"
even though i know it wasn't finished.
i still love it. the appocalyptic imaagery on the cover
fascinated me as a kid and they lyrics fascinated me, too.

i will say this, though... if anybody else
besides marvin gaye was singing on "in my lifetime"
and "midnight love," the songs woudl probably be unlistenable.

so maybe i just adore marvin's voice THAT much.

What's Going On is undeniable. Trouble Man was cool and experimental for an r&b vocalist to pull off. I like the Love Man cuts that were released on cd.

But the rest of his albums (and I have all the 70s and 80s ones released while he lived) only have 1 or 2 songs that I would play on a regular basis if I'm honest about it.

Atmophere-that bad daddy song off the new album... shit is not ill.

The Roots - birthday girl (1/2 credit...it wasnt even on the album.. thank god!)

*Jay and Ye- who gon stop me, I don't usually skip tracks when listening to an album in full.. this one I skip every time.

*Blu and Flying lotus- Everythingok, same as above. Flying Lotus with Blu is a wet dream on paper, and they have worked together on dope songs before. This one is not one of them.

*- these last 2 songs are luckily chased down by 2 of my favorite songs on the respective albums.

These are some of my favorite artists and yet I fucking hate these songs.
