I'm sorry, but it really is that easy I buy tons of music per month let alone per year. You don't need to be an expert to find an album online. you need.

1. to know the address of the google website www.google.com

2. know the artists name and the album name

3. have a computer (which clearly you do or we wouldn't be communicating thusly)

4. that's it there are no more steps.

I'm really not trying to insult you but if you can't be bothered to type the name and album title into a google search I don't know what to call that other than lazy.

because I preferred calling you out for being an asshole (which you continue to be).

But anyway, for the record, I DID google it, and "had trouble" (which is exactly what I said in my first post. "Having trouble" generally means you've tried something and come up short; it does not mean that I didn't try at all. Little english lesson for ya) finding it. I have uTorrent, which I use for leaked albums before they're released so I can hear them, and none of the torrents I found worked. I tried googling "mp3" and found nothing there, either.

As I stated, I am not so well versed on downloading albums because I rarely do it; I like to, you know, actually support the artists I listen to. Therefore, I did not know which direction I could go in next to get an advance listen to the album. So I did what many people on here do, and asked for "inbox" assistance.

So the effort was there. There was no laziness. I've just had no luck, so I was looking for some assistance. Go be a vicious cunt somewhere else.

it means he wants him to send him the downloaded cd so he doesn't have to go dl it himself or search for it or even buy/purchase the actual physical copy.

I'm actually going to buy the cd. first time I will buy a cd in 2 years and it's based off of me hearing only Ghetto Dreams and The Dreamer..The latter is one of my new favorite beats ever and just got me back into hiphop and makes me want to make a few beats now.

^ How I can tell a really good song....= it inspires me to go make music.

I like the beats - common sound a lil' hungrier than usual - some of the (r&b) hooks sound out of place- but i'm missing a sense of urgency/purpose in/with the songs - com used to be my favorit mc - but since EC - i have had a hard time getting the relevance of his lyrical output - hell jay-z seems way more "conscious”/message driven in 2011..

i agree with the lack of larger purpose you're pointing out. it seems common is trying to reconnect with the fans he's alienated over the past few projects/image shifts. i'm one of those fools who actually dig "electric circus" a lot; "finding forever" and "umc" disappointed me for their respective flaws, but i never lost trust in common as a dope rap artist. i still need to hear the new album, and i hope it's more than just common trying to recapture common. i've liked what little i have heard of it so far, but that's not to say i haven't noticed a few lame lines.

i'll have to listen to this.

The beats were good, but just not for Common. Common's attempts to be a pop-rapper have been, for lack of a better word, disgusting. So Common took poppy beats, tried to fit the mold of a radio rapper, and failed miserably.

listening to him when UMC dropped?

Com may be hungry to reconnect with his diehard fans, but his lyrical game is weak at best now. compare how he rhymes now with how he did on EC or LWFC. It's night and day. Even if he's trying to talk about shit that his long-term fans want to hear he's still watering down his lyrics. Heck, maybe he's not, maybe he lost that ability to be a master poet. His lyrics are a snooze fest to me now. I'm looking for that complexity, that shit that made me rewind several times, that shit that made me think.

Everyone can understand what Com is saying bc it's straightforward and easily digestible, but that doesn't make it enjoyable or lyrically great.
I'll listen to the album and then decide if I'll buy. I have everything Com has done except for UMC,which I still haven't listened to outside of a couple tracks.

Rotation:
The Roots - undun
Phonte - Charity Starts at Home
DJ Flash - Best of Phonte
Wilco - The Whole Love
Kendrick Lamar - Section 80

man.. if i want that master poetry i just revisit his previous albums..
no worry.. it;s 2011 dawg.. i dont expect Com to spit like he was on CIBAD
but on TDTB he spittin tho

Lyrically: I don't know what some of y'all are talking about. He's still bringing it lyrically on most of these tracks, with the same style of metaphors/similes he's always had. I actually think he went for a more complex lyrical attack on this album than he has since LWFC/EC. He may not be quite as SHARP as he used to be but that's to be expected considering where he is in his career. Everyone's hero JayZ isn't nearly as sharp as he used to be either. But yea it seems like he stumbles/trips up at a couple spots on this album, whereas Common at his peak never wasted a word so he's not as sharp on the mic, but the motherfucker is still writin his ass off. There's a couple corny punchlines, but like some people already said Common's had a couple of those per album his whole career (as has every rapper ever not named Biggie)

Beats: the beats are dope. No ID came with it for the most part. I like the instrumentation on these tracks. I can't determine which beat is my favorite yet but I'll be back to speak on that.

The one thing I could do without is the amount of Cocaine 80s-dood (don't know his name) hooks on this shit. I like the guy but he is literally on the whole album. Could've taken him off 3 or 4 tracks and been alright.

I think my top 5 tracks are The Dreamer (beat and lyrics on point), Ghetto Dreams, Gold (Comm comes off the best lyrically on this track and The Believer IMO), Lovin I Lost (loooove the Mayfield sample) and Celebrate.

He talks about gettin married, and weren't they engaged? I can only assume it's about her.

Regardless, can't say enough about that track. Might be my favorite on the album. Curtis Mayfield is the man, great sample.

I think the first half is stronger but I'm really feeling the triple threat of Celebrate, Windows and The Believer. Especially lyrically. The hooks are whatever but the beats and lyrics are on point.

...it wasn't HIM singing. But yea I def see your point (and the poster you responded to). I agree that really the only song I am not feeling is Sweet. The rest I really like.

Comm is so much better battling on tracks like Start the Show and Dooinit.

Cause 50 Cent came to my college a few years prior to this song coming out and I remember bein like "there's ....20 people on that stage which fucking one is 50??" haha so that line resonated with me too.

And it's funny you bring it up cause as I typed those two songs that one line was the one I was thinking of mentioning.

Also "verses touch the youth like a catholic priest..." hahaha. He kilt that joint. That beat was fire too.

as is his use of bitches throughout the album

i'm sure people that like this a LOT (6/10 for me) will call it double standards but when you set up an entire career based on one thing it's more than a little strange to totally flip it just to sound more like Kanye or Drake

it's how I feel about most of the album, Common coasts and coasts stumbles onto a shitty line milks it for all its worth and then gives us the chorus which is usually the best part of the song

After a dozen listens I'm honestly wishing this were a No I.D. and James Fauntleroy album instead

I like it, don't get me wrong, real easy to listen to and a great comeback after Finding Forever and UMC were both whack as hell

this is probably the best Common can do at this point, which is fine he's still a good rapper, he just doesn't stand out from the pack anymore other than his friendly voice and, in this case, No I.D.'s phenomenal production

Common will never go back to the days of "Resurrection" or "LWFC". Very few m.c.'s have the ability to stay lyrically sharp over 10 years (Nas, Eminem) so for that, Com should not get penalized. Now, we are living in a world where rappers need to put out dope songs. We are past the days of hitting the rewind button. There are rappers out there still doing it (going over people's heads, etc.), but they are struggling. Common has put in many years and is past the starving artist/keep it real stage.
The album is dope and is great to listen to on repeat. N.O. ID came with some heat and Com did his thing. Yes, he has fallen off lyrically compared to early Com, but now I am not listening for deeper meaning, I am listening to the whole package/the total song and the vibe is nice. Hopefully this album does well because then we may continue to see more Com and N.O. ID collabs.

best shit since LWFC. it's easily his third best album, and considering the greatness of the two in front of it, that's a damn compliment.

the dislike for this album makes next zero sense. this is EXACTLY what people have been wanting from him, sans a few sung hooks perhaps, but even that's a staple. the beats are straight and he comes off the same as he did on LWFC IMO. it's a beautiful album.

each his own, but man... i'm a little disappointed in the reaction to this album. it's actually... one of the better hip hop albums in a decade. i'm just gonna go ahead and play the "hater" card here. if you're a common fan... this is common. this is beautiful, soulful, heartfelt music in his natural lane. yup, even sweet... because if you're buggin on the so-called tough guy routine on that one, well.... you just don't get it. this is good ass music. period.

lol, even if i gave you that and called fifth best.. the top five are all damn good albums. it's a good ass album, and everything but FF and UMC are dope ass albums. CIBAD is whatever.

>I wanted him to stop using corny ass lines as the centerpieces

singing hooks are a little overdone, but his rhyming is on point. i dunno what corny ass lines you're talking about.

>the production is too one note in tone for me but its a good

one note? meh. it's cohesive, though not as tight as LWFC or Resurrection. i agree it never strays far from its heart, but one note is overboard.

mmmmno its about right if you ask me
there's a fine line between a cohesive sound and being one note, and this record crosses it more than once

Im very happy right now. Common did it. Since LWFC, I've had a bit of a love hate relationship with Com. BE was dope but UMC and FF just didnt do it for me. I've listened to this Joint 3 times now and Im so damn happy. He brought it. He really did. No ID killed it as well, my days!.

Strangely, the only track not doing it for me is Gold, not that I dont like it but it just doesnt grab me like that. Even Sweet is dope and the shit talking at the end is just funny to me. The Dreamer, RAW, Celebrate, Ghetto Dreams with my favourite MC of all time and Cloth, are the killers at the mo. Just overall a very good album. Might be the best release this year.

Im happy for COM man. He should be proud 'cause this is dope as its really difficult at this stage of your career to still drop this type of heat. Just ask Nas/HOV/Em.

With No ID, Im going to need some of that Heat for Nasir, DAMN!

>common is common. he won't rap circles around anyone

I mean he's not QUITE as complex and sharp as he once was, but I'm still putting him in a high percentile of quality MCs in the present day. And he could rap circles around plenty of the clowns that's doing it today.

I feel like some people aren't really even listening to the stuff he's rhyming. There's some vintage Common complexity ALL OVER this album but it seems like people are like "eh he ain't shit, but the production's good" as if they didn't even give the lyrics a chance.

Listen CLOSELY to his lyrics on Gold, on The Believer, on The Dreamer, on Windows...he is not lacking in the complexity we've always come to expect from him on AT LEAST those tracks, and he's got some shit on the rest of the tracks too. But those ones stand out.

Again I'm not claiming that he's as sharp as he was around the Res/One Day/LWFC/EC days, but he's not the slouch a lot of you guys are making him out to be either.

i guess what i meant was, his rapping tends to get redundant after a few songs. almost like he raps with the same dynamic range and pitch the ENTIRE time. not that this is such a bad thing, but it also causes his lines to stand out less.

My point still stands to the rest of the people in here acting like the dude is spitting hashtag rap these days. But now I see what you're saying. And I totally agree. Common's never been dynamic as far as his voice/tone is concerned, which is likely why he never became the megastar his lyrics would indicate he should be. But of course he can write his ass off.

...because the production is shouting out loud, grabbing us by the ears and saying, "I won't be ignored." It's not even that Com is not complementing the superlative production with his superior lyricism, because IMO he is. It's just that he is battling a whole lot of perception in this album, other than the production, stuff only old-school fans don't fuss about. He has become so succesful as an actor, more so than as a a rapper, that he has become mainstream and safe, so much lots of listeners, mostly newbies, will not get past that factor when they listen to this album, i.e., they will not hear Com doing what we always know he could do, i.e., spitting. They only hear the brilliant NoID production.

I say "Let it be." If the appreciation for the production draws folks in and makes them otherwise buy the album, then Hell Yeah ! One just hopes they'll give it enough spins to discover shit we always knew, i.e., that Common is a superior MC, one of the best that ever did it, and that factor is alive and well in this album.

And I agree. One of the reasons Common became respected as one of the better MCs early in his career was because No ID's production, as great as it was, was simplistic enough to let Common breathe and just spit fury.

On this album it seems that the instrumentation is louder and more complex than old NoID would have produced which, like you said, forces the listener to pay attention a little harder in order to fully comprehend what Common is saying.

That's not a knock on No ID's work on this album at all (in fact I think it's excellent) but I think you're right in that new listeners or people who have just written Common off will hardly give the lyrics a second chance and just say "production's good, Common's an actor now" which is unfair. But as you said perhaps I/we should just let it be and enjoy it ourselves.

My one major knock of the album is that the hooks are weak and too repetitive. Kanye definitely could have come in as some kind of "chorus consultant" haha, to assist with making the songs a little more complete overall.

Still really good tho.

First spin and this is a very strong album.

People have typically hated on Common lately because of stuff like bad production, recycled subject matter, not coming hard, being overly soft, riding Kanye's coat-tails, etc, etc.

This is all rectified on this album.

No ID did his thing.

Com hasn't sounded this focused since BE.

Of course he has lost a step, but...even Com at 80% is better than most.

No Ye, No Neptunes.

A couple tracks where he came harder (pause) than he has in a long minute.

What could he have done??

An album of 10 dilla beats saying how much he loved dilla???

"Electric Circus 2: I take it back, I love that album"??

***edit- and Common has always had corny moments. Granted they seem to happen more often, but if you've been a Common fan you have learned to live with some corniness.

Payback is a Grandmother anyone??***

This is a very strong album- better than I thought it would be.

Now I think Common needs to try a concept album next to push his writing more, but that's a different thread.

No references to his dick, bitches, models, popping bottles, being an actor, driving a nice car or any other shit most Common fans don't go to Common for. I'd like this album more if it were more in the vein of the opening song.

I'm really feeling the new French Montana/Waka Flocka tape more than this album and that's a problem for someone who's been a Common fan for over 10 years now.

Not in a douchey, just-watched-Entourage type of way, though.

On Common's first three albums, he was definitely more in the zone of talking about those things, but it seemed natural. The three that followed, his music became more positive and esoteric, and even though there was that skit at the end of "The Light" where Common pimp-slaps a female fan, it was obvious that Common was heading towards a more positive and socially aware road in his music. His last three albums have been an amalgamation of everything, for better (and usually more so) for worse.

It's the in thing to deride Com as being this Starbucks rapper. Granted his last two lp's were geared towards a certain audience but from what I've heard so far this album is vintage Com. I don't understand the negative reactions either.

...I'll take a shot...I think that heads that been down with Com since "Can I Borrow a Dollar?" want is what Com can't deliver anymore, authentic, well thought out rhymes that are challenging yet relatable...fair or not...I realize his career has progressed (or degressed-depending on who you ask), so imo, he would be better off hanging up the MIC. His fall-off is apparent to anyone who remembers his work from "BE" back...I'm not mad that cat wants to move on, just IMO he would be better off these days leaving the MIC alone...what cats always respected about Common (Sense), the MC was what came across in his music as sincerity, and brothers just don't believe him anymore...that said, the project has a couple bangers, but as a COMPLETE PROJECT, just not feelin it....he can't be who he once was due to his new direction as an actor/entertainer...

I personally think this album is really good, but I also am not trying to compare it to (as you said) his work from Be and before that. I'm looking at it as a piece of work on it's own, recognizing that it's context is his current place in life which is far different than when he was the best MC doing it (IMO), and I enjoy the music for what it is. To compare it to any of his work from before is sort of unfair. But again, I see exactly what you're saying.

The point about how sincere he used to be I can FULLY understand. His music from Be and before often gave me chills because he was so vivid, and so real, you just couldn't help but become emotionally affected by it. Songs like Nag Champa, Geto Heaven, Be(Intro), Retrospect for Life, Reminding Me (Of Sef), and guest verses on Respiration/Act Too, etc. etc. etc. come to mind. This album offers only minimal examples of that but it's still there. Keeping true to the "sincerity" point you made, Sweet is really the only song that I see myself skipping going forward because it really feels forced. Common never forced his shit.

So I see where you're going. My point is that I am trying, with success, to look at this album for what it is: an album from a seasoned vet who is at a far different point in his career, who's really looking to enjoy life at this point. Nothing more nothing less.

Especially the concept album thing. Now that The Roots have done it with great success, I think that's a logical next step for Comm too, being at basically the same stage in his career as The Roots are.

I think I see your point but I think saying he doesn't have "inspiration" is using the wrong term.

I don't think that you can say that this album was "uninspired". If anything he is overly thrilled about releasing this album and throughout the entire recording PROCESS he couldn't stop telling everyone how great it was to be going back to his roots with No ID, and bringing that hiphop. I haven't seen him this pumped about an album since Be and maybe even before that.

But I think what you're trying to say is that his focus isn't where it would need to be in order to successfully pull off a concept album, and THAT I can fully agree with. As much as I like this album, I still think it seems like his focus wasn't 100% on the album. And obviously that's the case considering he was simultaneously working on movies and a TV show. The Common from Be and before (which I keep referencing because you are correct in that the Common of that whole era is entirely different than the one that came after musically) never wasted a word or a beat on his albums. Everything was tightly knit, focused, you could really see his vision and direction. FF and forward you can see that he didn't have the overall control on any of the albums that he used to.

So because of that I agree that maybe unless he put movies/TV on hold while recording (which won't happen), you're probably right that he wouldn't be able to put his all into it and therefore maybe wouldn't pull it off.

shit sounds like a children's rap song. it's terrible. he lost the ability to be a complex lyricist. INstead, he's more interested in making things rhyme and making what he says to clear cut that you don't need to think about it to understand.

this whole album is Com getting back to what he used to do, but everything sounds so damn forced.

The Roots - undun
Phonte - Charity Starts at Home

Great album.

No I.D. did his thing and Common is flowing. True, there are a few bad lines here and there, but some of you guys are acting like he's devolved into something atrocious.

My only gripes are the dude on the hooks being all over the album. He's not bad, I just got tired of hearing him front to back. Some of the beats are a little overproduced. And I did notice an uptick in Common saying b*tch.

it sounds like it's better than FF, which was kinda whatever outside of a few tracks to me. like the BE criticism seemed like it made more sense with FF. I liked the beats more than I did the rhyming on that album (inverse of EC).

with the 3 Common verses. As much as I love Nas' verse and love that my two favorite all time MCs came together on a dope track, I almost wish that Comm had kept that third verse on...the way he ends it really brings his first two verses together. Obviously it's not a metaphor and not as big a surprise as I Used to Love HER but the end where he says something like "money and a hood chick, that's a ghetto n*gga's dream" was a sick way to wrap that song up, and make it clear that he's rapping from a different perspective than his own.

It didn't put me to sleep and it actually got me charged in a few spots. Just noticed that the ending to "Sweet" reminds me a lot of the ending to Kanye's "Power" with the dramatic keys at the end. Didn't mind any of the singing on the tracks at all. There are a few flaws here and there like a weak line in a spot or the shit talking at the end of "Sweet". But nevertheless, very strong album from Common...maybe one of his best. Still a fan of his artistry despite, E.C.,U.M.C., and needlessly dissing Drake.

I thought he was back on his bullshit. I even smiled and rewinded the first track but it lost steam to me throughout the LP. It never picked back up after that. Hearing about this Nas/Common collab he got in the chamber got me thinking this ain't the album I been waiting on. Same thing I thought with The Throne. Seem like two Good Music artist teamed up with the two artist who I was waiting to do an album together, Jay/Nas. Ghetto Dreams was tight as far as the beat but I didn't feel the chemistry was there for the song. For artist of their caliber I expected more than just

Com: I like hood bitches
Com: Yeah I still like hood bitches
Nas: I acknowledge I don't be staying on topic in past rhymes but yeah...I like hood bitches and be glad I ain't chose yours

The video......no. Two dudes falling asleep on a couch together while watching a hood flick and waking up looking at each other? Seriously? That's where y'all creative juices is going?

Personally, I love Ghetto Dreams and I think Com and Nas could vibe enough to deliver on the promise of their upcoming Nas.Com collabo that Com spoke about recently. However, Common is at home with former Daisy Age brethren, jumping many times on a de la Soul or Roots or Mos Def collabos, and always delivering songs that completely wow us. The only time Com had a collabo with a super-emcee other than the usual suspects above, that at least matched if not exceeded expectations was with Canibus on 1,2 Many on One Day It'll All make Sense. In general, the concept of a super-emcees collabo is always mouthwatering and epic on paper, until we realise that there is organic rapport/chemistry needed to make it work. It helps if they were in the same studio, otherwise collabos are electronically mailed in nowadays and the product usually ends up being disjointed, and less than the sum of its parts. Black Republican by Nas/Jay-Z in particular is one good example (albeit not a bad track on its own) of a collabo that didn't match expectations. Eminem and Jay-Z was great more because of Eminem's pull, rather than because of the synergy between the super-emcees. Watch the throne isn't a collabo of two super-emcees IMO, but I digress. Back to Nas and Com: I'll admit that it wasn't conceptually and lyrically better than what can be expected, perhaps for the same reasons Black Republican wasn't. However, I still enjoyed both tracks, so much that I'm willing to wait for the exploration of more and better thought-after concepts in the future collabo, Nas.Com.

other than some corny common lines, i'm enjoying listening to this more than undun. the dreamer, the believer, ghetto dreams, blue skies, raw, gold, cloth, celebrate, windows, all knock. i wish common would stop rapping about erykah/women, but oh well. woulda liked to hear cloth as more of a 1-9-9-9 or like they used to say type song though. for the first time, pops rap was very skippable. didn't do anything for me. lovin i lost isn't bad, but i skip it every time. the believer has some of commons deepest lyrics in a minute. windows has a faint stevie wonder-ish vibe to it.

p.s. if you're mad at common for saying "bitches," i'm SMH. y'all johnny come late-lies need to listen to can i borrow a dollar.

Artist: Common Sense
Album: Can I Borrow a Dollar?
Song: Heidi Hoe
Typed by: OHHLA Webmaster DJ Flash

Whatup BITCH? I'm Petey Wheatstraw
And you don't stop, with the heidi heidi hoe
Hi hoe, or bye hoe, if you're lookin for a sucker
(What are you?) I'm just another motherfucker
Pucker your lips, do flips like Mary Lou
Just because I fucked you doesn't mean that I'ma marry you
Bury you, I will do, after, I bill you
Kill you, hoe, cause your shit smells like mildew
Pe-ew, think you need some soap and a rag
Or better yet Black, Flag, you scallywag
Tag, I didn't mean to diss dis... hoe butt
But you need to stay such, do not touch
Much disrespect goes out to you
And your parents, too, for havin you
Haven't you been introduced to a douche
I guess you said fuck footloose, and got pussyloose
No juice, you shoulda dried up, like a prune-a
Mister mechanic this place needs a tune up
For the pink cadillac cause it's block is off
And have more use, than a public park
for recreation, givin up the body is a hobby
I'm tellin Santa Claus you been naughty (sing it)
Hoe hoe hoe, Merry Christmas
Aiyyo JuJu, I just had to diss dis

Heidi Heidi Hoe, huh, the Heidi Hoe
All the niggaz know, yo the Heidi Hoe, c'mon
The Heidi Hoe, hah the Heidi Hoe
All the niggaz know, that you're a Heidi Hoe

(Now bring it back brotha)

Eni-meeny-meeny-meeny-meeny-meeny-miney-moe
Careful to catch a tiger, after you catch a tiger
you can catch a hoe, there's your hoe, kiss a hoe, fuck a hoe
Diss a hoe, I'm Petey Wheatstraw from the Southside of Chicago
Hablo ingles? I don't know espanol Joe
I can go the line plus a hundred like Flo Jo
Homo's a nono, so faggots, stay solo
I roll my dick so it holds just like a Rolo
Total recall, yeah I see y'all
I see you, I see you're a freak too, so peek a boo
I'm prickin you whether or not, took you out that's work see
So get your skirt see, and bitch, dirty
Curtsey, dosey-do out the do' slut
This is what I come on, so slut you better grow up
Slow up, you forgot your earrings here take em
Salami beef and ham with the asalaam alaikum
Like that hoe (that hoe) that hoe (that hoe)
Dabba-da-dat, it's like that hoe

Sittin on the dock of the bay, I say hoe
Say hoe?! (Hoe!!) Do you know, do you know?
Bo knows this hoe blows much much dick
An undercover trick, a toe a tac a tic
Naked at, frick-a-frat, plus her puddy wat
C'mere k-k-k-k-k-k, yo c'mere you little puddy cat
What, your booty black is so indespicable
You squaw-pie, tack-haired, motherfuckin jiggaboo
You can suck a dick or two or three or four or mo' here
But first get curlin iron burns off your forehead
My nigga Coe said, that you're an around the way girl
You're fuckin everybody around the way, and been all around the world
And you still can't find yo' fate
But you had a couple of babies I mean a Bunch like Brady
The lady is a tramp snake hoe yo and all of that
Fuck her sixty-nine you get the eighty-six and don't call me back
Your black ass bunion

that's a little different than a guy pushing 40

I just think it's not very creative, I don't care about hearing the words come out of his mouth it's just not in character and I think he could be more clever than the Lil' Wayne style puns he delivers on this album

so as a Com fan, you find the hook/chorus to be entertaining on "Celebrate"? You like the lyrics and feel too "Sweet"? Just wondering.....That said, there are 2-3 BANGERS on this LP, but as a whole, it's not very good IMO...

i have no qualms with the chorus to celebrate. his verses are okay, the chorus is dope to me, and so is the beat. common using bitch is not new to me, nor do i hold him on some pedestal. only thing i don't like about sweet is the cursing on the chorus. THAT does feel super forced. to each his own of course.

see, lovin i lost and pops rap are the only tracks i skip. everything else is banging to me (i happen to really like blue skies). almost every song does have corny lines though, i'd rather hear cloth as a 1-9-9-9 or like they used to say type of song. but beyond that, this is one of my favorite lp's pf the year. i think undun is a better album, but the dreamer is funner.

have one of the best track records of album-opening songs in rap history:

Can I Borrow a Dollar? - A Penny for My Thoughts
Resurrection - Resurrection
One Day It'll All Make Sense - Invocation
Like Water for Chocolate - Time Travelin'
Electric Circus - Soul Power
Be - Be (Intro)
Finding Forever - Start the Show
The Dreamer/The Believer - The Dreamer

That's a flawless list right there IMO. All those tracks range from excellent to downright unbelievable (Invocation, Be).

Who else is notorious for great opening tracks? Outkast comes to mind. Nas too.

In response to Reply # 0

I don't know how you plug those holes (particularly on "Celebrate"), I kinda hate how rap music is kinda built nowadays to have all this singing on shit in that space. They could have just let that Kenny Loggins record play through the chorus instead of having that corny-ass shit run through it. Beat was good (anything that samples golden age yacht rock gets thumbs up)

Track by track rundown below:

>1. The Dreamer (featuring Maya Angelou)

In true Common tradition, Common enters the album strong; possibly my favorite Common intro since the one that set off ONE DAY IT WILL ALL MAKE SENSE. The beat is just too tough (drum-wise).

>2. Ghetto Dreams (featuring Nas)

Excellence. If you consider yourself a rap fan and can't feel something like this, you lick doo-doo crumbs. Common was in a zone, Nas was actually channeling his "Stillmatic", unexpectedly candid and funny self. Good shit.

>3. Blue Sky (featuring Makeba Riddick)

Goddamn singing on this joint... it's cool, but this sounds like Kanye West-lite.

>4. Sweet

Comedy. Straight up. I was laughing at Common doing the voices.

>5. Gold

Again with the goddamn singing. This kinda has a Madlibby feel to it, but it's definitely a "Common" track, so I ain't mad.

>6. Lovin' I Lost

On paper, I should like the idea of this, but so much about this song is awkward. Subject matter is some PB&J, Common sounds like some shit in spots on this song.

>7. Raw (How You Like It)

This time the "goddamn singing" doesn't quite grate on my ears. Like the previous song, Common sounds like some shit in spots, like he's trying to force the issue. They didn't Mickey Mouse the beat, and as the song goes on, Common gets off the BS.

>8. Cloth

This song is cool. Nothing I'd repeat, though. This also sounds like some Kanye shit.

>9. Celebrate

The hook on this shit is gay and in the building. I'm tired of hearing motherfuckers singing "niggas", "bitches", and "hood" in anything, dogg. Shit was cute in the 1990s, but damn near 20 years later... they need to give it up. I have a sentimental attachment to the beat. It's a fun song that is totally assfucked by that corny-ass hook. Goddamn, I hate how the 1990s made that shit acceptable.

>10. Windows

Because of the synergy (and perhaps because of the slight "808s" feel) between the "goddamn singing" and the beat... I don't mind it. Shit, I actually like it. Common sounds just like "Common" on this song, without going into questionable-line territory; the verse where he talks about his daughter, going into the slightly "Stevie"-ish instrumental break, is a high point. When I get here, I'm kind of glad I stayed around.

>11. The Believer (featuring John Legend)

When this song starts off, I'm itching to hit the "Track Forward" button. Until Common starts rhyming and the drums come in. Shit sounds like New Age, "USA for Africa circa 1985" type shit... eh. Gives me a lil bit of that "Electric Circus" feel in that, questionable elements are tolerated only because of Common's feature.

>12. Pops Belief

It sounds as they got Pops in the booth after he had a few; that's cool, but it doesn't bother me as much as it did some. Including this segment here still made it feel like a "Common" album.

Overall, it wasn't bad. Certainly listenable, and on the strength of "Windows", "The Dreamer", "Ghetto Dreams" and "Celebrate" (if I can ignore that hook), I'll be good.

No I.D. did his thang. Common (mostly) did his thang. Not mad.
