"Lets talk 90s rock and build a list of the best albums."

Its winter, its craft beer season for me and something about NE in the winter and a good Magic Hat makes me wanna listen to some Counting Crows or some Third Eye Blind and plenty of other bands that I listened to in my childhood on the way to school.

To YOU what are the most important albums of the 90s in rock music?

I've got...

Foo Fighters-Colour And The Shape

Third Eye Blind-Self Titled

Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness

Gran Turismo...

sheeeiitt..Tragic Kingdom..thee fugging list goes on..

lets talk about it.

BTW The Cardigans are one of the absolute best bands ever. I remember an episode of The Office and Andy is singing the lyrics to Lovefool and then says "what ever happened to those guys?"..."those guys" went on to craft 3 slept on classics and Nina Persson went on to make 2 solo albums under the name A Camp, that were also exceptional

i was gifted this one christmas and returned it to the store unopened without any hesitation. i traded it in for marilyn manson's 'antichrist superstar,' which i always found a funny swap and anyway never regretted because it's a great album. only recently i've been listening to country radio and hearing darius rucker's solo material and sort of wondering if i maybe should have at least listened to hootie. i didn't hate those singles, i just thought they were overplayed. every once in a while i'll hear one now and enjoy it. so maybe...

Although no mentions of Nirvana is infinitely pleasing (in a very snarky way).

First, it's bizarre to me that people think that "modern rock" radio garbage like Third Eye Blind represents the best of anything, aside maybe from being the best music to smash yourself in the head with a brick to.

That said, best "rock" albums of the 90's?

- Nirvana, "Nevermind," and "In Utero"
- Pearl Jam, "Ten," "Vs." and "Vitalogy." ("No Code" is also criminally underrated.)
- Metallica, "The Black Album"
- Pavement, "Slanted & Enchanted," and "Terror Twilight"
- Radiohead, "The Bends," and "OK Computer."
- Beck, "Odelay."
- Oasis, "Definitely Maybe," and "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?"
- Blur, "Parklife," "Blur," and "13."
- The Flaming Lips, "Clouds Taste Metallic," and "The Soft Bulletin."
- Neutral Milk Hotel, "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea"
- Wilco, "Being There" and "Summerteeth"
- Mogwai, "Young Team," and "Come On Die Young"
- Tom Waits, "Mule Variations"
- The White Stripes, "The White Stripes"
- Nine Inch Nails, "Broken," "The Downward Spiral," and "Fragile"
- Underworld, "Beaucoup Fish" (technically EDM, but whatever)
- Foo Fighters, "There Is Nothing Left To Lose," "The Colour and the Shape"
- Rage Against the Machine, "Self titled," and "Evil Empire"
- Massive Attack, "Mezzanine" (again, probably not technically "rock," but close enough)
- Billy Bragg & Wilco, "Mermaid Ave."
- System of a Down, "Self titled"
- Guns N' Roses, "Use Your Illusion pts. I and II"
- Bob Dylan, "Time out of Mind"
- U2, "Achtung Baby," and "Pop"
- Godspeed You! Black Emperor, "F♯ A♯ ∞"
- Stereolab, "Dots and Loops"
- Portishead, "Dummy," and "Portishead"
- the Verve, "Urban Hymns"
- Deftones, "Adrenaline," and "Around the Fur"
- Modest Mouse, "This Is a Long Drive for Someone With Nothing to Think About," and "The Lonesome Crowded West"
- Lo-Fidelity All-Stars, "How To Operate With a Blown Mind"
- Tortoise, "Millions Now Living Will Never Die"
- Pantera, "A Vulgar Display of Power," and "Far Beyond Driven"
- Cake, "Fashion Nugget"
- Tool, "Undertow," and "Aenima"
- Faith No More, "Angel Dust"
- Sonic Youth, "Goo," and "Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star"
- Cornershop, "When I Was Born for the 7th Time"
- Smashing Pumpkins, "Siamese Dream," and "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness"
- Bruce Springsteen, "The Ghost of Tom Joad"
- Alice in Chains, "Dirt," "Jar of Flies," and "Alice in Chains"
- Weezer, "The Blue Album," and "Pinkerton"
- Liz Phair, "Exile in Guyville"
- The Breeders, "Last Splash"
- Ocean Color Scene, "Self titled"
- Spiritualized, "Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space"
- Los Lobos, "Kiko," and "Colossal Head"
- Biohazard, "Urban Discipline"
- The Red Hot Chili Peppers, "Blood Sugar Sex Magik," and "Californication"
- My Bloody Valentine, "Loveless"

>- Beck, "Odelay."
Personally, I like this album, but I thought Mutations was way better.

>- Wilco, "Being There" and "Summerteeth"
I think it's funny how they got few mentions of these albums until AFTER Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. They're good albums, but I think a tad a overrated in the wake of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.

>- Bob Dylan, "Time out of Mind"
Just, YES. Thank you!

>- Stereolab, "Dots and Loops"
I would go with Peng or Trasient Random Noise Bursts or Emperor myself. But, yeah.

>- Sonic Youth, "Goo," and "Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No
>Star"
Goo!

>- My Bloody Valentine, "Loveless"
>
Finally, someone mentions this and Nirvana. God, that took forever.

Okay, so now since you're probably sitting there like, why doesn't he mention any, here's some off the top of my head:
Ride — Nowhere
Talk Talk — Laughing Stock
Bark Psychosis — Hex
The Ocean Blue — Beneath the Rhythm and Sound
The Cure — Wish
Riverside — One
Belle and Sebastian — The Boy With the Arab Strap
Kitchens of Distinction — The Death of Cool
The Sea and Cake — The Fawn
Slowdive — Pygmalion
Trash Can Sinatras — I've Seen Everything
Bjork — Homogenic
The Field Mice — For Keeps

To name a few.

i was all into that album when it came out (my first time seeing them live was the Wish tour), but i now realize i was handicapping it because of Disintegration and Kiss Me^3 (<--my intro to the cure).... i rarely go back to it today (i go back to the other two, Head on the Door & Faith plenty).

that said, if i ever have a daughter, i'm planning on naming her Elise.

(of course, I'm a folk and roots rock fan and spent almost half of the 1990s living in Japan... but most of these *could* be filed under rock for one reason or another)

Uncle Tupelo - Anodyne (their best record, and imho better than anything Wilco's ever put out... or Son Volt, for that matter)

Levellers - Levelling the Land

Chris Whitley - Living With the Law

The Sundays - Reading, Writing, Arithmetic (see note to Disco above)

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones - More Noise & Other Disturbances (I think; I got all their albums confused.)

The Boom - Tropicalism

Kazufumi Miyazawa - Afrosick

Ani Difranco - Out of Range

I was going to offer Bob Mould's Workbook too, btu that appears to have been 1989. *shrug*

Col Bruce Hampton & the Aquarium Rescue Unit - s/t

Ashley MacIsaac - Hi, How Are You Today?

Michelle Shocked - Arkansas Traveler

Richard Thompson - Rumor & Sigh

Shokichi Kina & Champloose - Champloo! (Live)

Soul-Cialist Escape In Lost Homeland - s/t (Soul Flower Union side project)

Taj Mahal & Toumani Diabate - Kulanjan

The Drovers - World of Monsters

The Iguanas - Super Ball

Tony Trischka - World Turning

Takashi Hirayasu - Kariyushi No Tsuki

v/a - Guitar Paradise of East Africa

Weird how tastes vary even within fans of one specific band. I don't even find that to be the best Tupelo record (which to me is "Still Feel Gone"), and I definitely prefer most Wilco albums and a couple of Son Volt albums over it.

when my radio station got it in. My copy is actually the station's dupe...

What's funny is that most fans will say something like they only really like the acoustic album, which seems odd to me.

I find Wilco fans who tend write off UT (w/o really hearing them, usually) because 'Tweedy hadn't eally developed as a songwriter yet' to be very annoying. So thanks for NOT phrasing your response that way.

That's awesome. I was a college DJ too and have a few station copies of things to this day also... including my well-worn copy of "Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde." Best station lift I ever made - it was just sitting in a huge box of promos rotting away.

I was a Tupelo fan starting with "Still Feel Gone" thanks to an in-the-know friend of mine, and got to follow them through the break-up and formation of the two new bands and all that. It's been a long, bumpy ride. I imagine a lot of people who would say such a thing as that only got into them after Wilco happened. Honestly, I do feel Tweedy is a much better songwriter now than he was back then, but it was the rough-edged country/punk style and the mix of Farrar and Tweedy that made them who they were. If you're only listening to hear zygote Tweedy, you're already doing it wrong. As for Farrar, he was pretty well developed from the get-go... I think his songwriting peaked on "Trace" and then kind of went into a diminishing returns holding pattern from there. At this point I've basically lost interest in him... I don't think he knows what to do with himself.

lucky you.

My favorite might be the vinyl copy of Sandy Denny's underappreciated 'North Star Grassman And The Ravens,' if only for the unbelievable version of Blackwaterside.

M y brother was working at U. Richmond's station when they decided to get rid of ALL OF THEIR VINYL to go all-CD. Dude made out like a bandit.

Very much so... it's just that while Tweedy is a 'better' 'songwriter' now for sure, his music for the last decade or so has lacked a lot of the elements that drew me to him; I fall into the opposite trap of wanting to hear traces of UT in Wilco. I think my favorite Wilco album might be Being There, and I'm a rare supporter of A.M around these parts.

As for Farrar, I finally got to see him a few summers ago, and afterward I felt like I should have just put on Trace and hung out in my backyard for the afternoon. Supposedly his Ghost of Tom Joad album was really good though.

I'm also a fan of "A.M." though it's pretty clearly the weakest Wilco album except maybe "Wilco (The Album)," which I'm really not a big fan of at all. "Being There" is the perfect mid-point though, poised just between country Tweedy and this new guy who clearly loves The Beatles a lot more than Hank Williams. That was my favorite Wilco album for a long time and I was a little annoyed that people were all over YHF's jock; I kept wanting to say "Hey, listen to this older one! It's EVEN BETTER!"

In retrospect I actually think YHF is better, but if you whittled "Being There" down to the strongest possible single disc, it would be amazing. It's still great anyway. That album and Tom Petty (who I love unapologetically) were the two biggest influences on the country/rock band I had for a few years.

"First Band on the Moon" has a few great highlights but otherwise the songs are much less interesting than "Life," and the few times I've heard any of "Gran Turismo" I didn't like it at all. However, it's a testament to the songwriting on "Life" that it even occurred to me to list it, because usually coy girly-pop is pretty far off my radar.

First Band on the Moon has a larger presence that makes them seem really ready for prime time.

A realy big feel/presence.

The songs on FBOTM also are more elaborate/larger.

I also think the songs were far bette4r; they tried too much to sound ''cool'' and cutting-edge4 on ''First band...'' and ESPECIALLY ''Grand Turismo'' which didn't fit the4m IMO.

Their latter tu4rn into a more rootsy classic rock direction fit them better but it's the early wimp-pop stuff that holds up be4st IMO...

Out of all the weird-ass things for me to agree with you about, Jakob, this is definitely one. They were best doing wimp-pop. The more modern touches starting with "First Band" made them less interesting and distinctive, and I think three quarters of their best songs were written before that point.

By the way, I constantly forget they had an album before "Life" - maybe because they treated it like a demo and recycled some of the tracks for "Life." So yeah, they fell off after the SECOND album, I reckon.

I never took the time to figure that out. I remember looking up "Emmerdale" years ago and going, "Hey, I already own half these songs... guess I don't need that album." At that point they had already done "Happy Meal" over for "First Band on the Moon" so I figured it was just a weird thing they did, remaking their own songs... anyway thanks for clearing that up.

I had a lot of late night shifts and Long Gone Before Daylight was pretty much the sountrack to that, it really fit everything just perfectly..its one of my top 10 favorite albums actually.

I still think Gran Turismo was great though, mainly for the feel of the album. You know how they recorded it?

Even worse than now. 95-99 WTF was that? I think I can count the albums I REALLY like on like two hands.

Admittedly, I wasn't checking much for rock then but at the same time, there was a reason for that.

Actually, 93-94 was not too hot either but there was a couple of dope ones.

On the other hand 90-92 were REALLY dope which is why I can't dismiss 90's rock altogether. Still, just like the 60's in rock didn't really start until 63 or so, I think the first years of the 90's were more holdovers from the 80's indie/underground and thus pretty dope.

>its craft beer season

you mention Magic Hat... I'm not a huge fan (though I was up in VT in college when the only place I could find their beer was on tap at the Metronome... funny that they're so big now) but they're certainly not bad.

I've been drinking a pretty wide variety lately courtesy of a few swaps that my wife's organized. Participation's up enough though that we've only gotten one bottle of each brew the last two swaps.

Lots of Oktoberfests... these don't tend to be my thing, but they're okay. The Thomas Hooker was my favorite of the bunch.

Finishing up an Ommeggang sampler pack. All outstanding.

Meaning to crack a Victory Old Horizontal we've been aging for a year (1 of 3 bottles I think)... same for some of the Rude Elf's Reserve from last year as well.

Our contribution to the last swap was a Duck-Rabbit 'Rabanator' doppelbock, so we've got 5 or 6 of those... maybe a HAIR darker than I like it, but still excellent. Made me want to get some more Aventinus... or maybe make some.

Homebrew: been meaning to make a dunkelweizen with some sassafrass extract for something a little different (the Leiny 'Fireside Brown' has sassafrass or something similar in it, for a non-wheat commercial example). Will be interesting. Bottled up a strong ale with orange peel recently, pretty good but can use some time to develop. Time to get into my holiday ale, have one case left I brewed last Feb. and bottled in April. Awesome, ~11% or so. Have 3 gallons of cider in the fermenter waiting for me to get out and buy bottlecaps. And a keg of a brown ale made with buckwheat honey, a recipe I've been messing around with for the past 18 months or so... this is maybe the 4th or 5th iteration of it.

Cold weather tonight... fire and a beer sounds capital. MMMM.

if brewing were the record industry, incredibly hop-forward IPAs would be 'played out' by now.

As it is, I've seen a lot of breweries coming out with what would have been an IPA a decade ago but now classifies as a pale, and cranking up the alcohol content a bit so you still get a smaller piney hop shock, but you taste it instead of feeling it, and there's some extra sweetness there too to mellow it a bit.

but yeah, I think sweeter, smoother high-gravity but low-hop beers will be replacing the IPA as the craft ale darling, especially as enthusiasm for Belgian ales and styles continues to build and build. (with good reason, imho.)

Would love to try some of that Pranqster.

Hell, I even like their IPA (though their regular pale is preferred). The Red Seal and Scrimshaw are great lighter beers — more in the pilsner style. The Old Rapustin Imperial Stout is just pure syrup. Good, but very heavy. We've discussed their Brother Thelonious Belgian Ale before. It's also very strong and sweet — almost more like barley wine, actually. Fortunately, the brewery is just over in Fort Bragg, so all of their brews are available in most stores here.

I like a good Belgian ale, me. Unfiltered though. Give me cloudy or give me nothing. Take for instance the New Belgium Trippel: high alcohol content, terrible overtly sugary flavor.

The Anchor brewing company just started releasing their Humming Ale in six packs over here. It's a higher alcohol content, but a lighter ale, so it has that hoppy zip to it. I actually don't mind it. But, like all of their brews, it's super carbonated and foamy, and subsequently, very filling.

I'm not much of a stout guy but prefer Imperials to regular stouts and porters, and this one is a clear winner.

we still have half a case of this! Haven't had one in a few months.

Haven't had anything from New Belgium. I think bottle-conditioning is clearly the way to go on Belgians, though... just comparing a bottle of the Omeggang Rare Vos that was bottled and capped, it didn't come anywhere close to the bottle-conditioned corked & caged version of the same beer.

That said, I still like most of the Belgians reasonably well, bottle conditioned or no.

screw Anchor for copyrighting 'steam...' hence they're the only brewery that gets to use the name of a style of beer. It's akin to say Genesee copyrighting 'Cream Ale.'

Like their politics or no, they do good work over there.

I just wish they would brew something a little less foamy. Hell, even the Old Foghorn Barley Wine is foamy as hell.

Their Christmas Ale is especially good.

I like Sam Adams, Magic Hat, Guiness, Harp, Newcastle...

pretty much the classics for short, I will drink whatever is new and noteworthy on tap..

But I drink Budweiser or Coors in the summer, so I switch to the heavier beers in the winter.

I did try this fantastic Breckenridge Vanilla Porter recently though.

hmmm, since Guiness, Harp, Newcastle might not even be considered 'craft' by a lot of standards these days. All solid enough though... been a while since I had a newcastle, but that's a tasty beer.

alright... I'm not big on the macro brews, but hot day, cold beer... I did manage to have both Corona and Rolling Rock recently though!

>I did try this fantastic Breckenridge Vanilla Porter recently
>though.

I've had their Christmas ale and Summer Bright, both maybe B/B- beers... not bad, but there are better (to me) beers available for the cost. Vanilla Porter does have a good rep though.

For CO breweries I was actually really impressed with Boulder BC's 'Sweaty Betty' - got a case this summer and just drank the last one earlier this week and it was still awesome. Bright and flavorful American wheat and just the slightest hint of funkiness in there.

Personally, I think Badmotorfinger was MUCH better but it's pretty much a metal-album (¤well, HEAvY hardrock even bordering on doom and sludge at times) and I guess that's the reason most people prefer Superunknown; there was a bit too much mainstream alternative for me on that record even if songs like ''Fourth of July'' are right up my alley...

I agree that "Badmotorfinger" is the album to beat. "Superunknown" is maybe a touch more consistent but I prefer the harder-edged sound of BMF, plus the band's best few songs are on it - especially the untouchable "Jesus Christ Pose."

People often think it tapers out towards the end but the last couple of songs are actually really good even if they clearly front-loaded the record. I think it's more an issue of a certain fullness, similar to ''Louder than love''-60 minutes HEAvY Soundgarden is just a bit too much.

Superunknown is of course way more diverse and probably works better as an album if fillers aren't an issue (¤I think there's a lot on that record) but I don't care; I come from a metal-background so diversity is obviously not a big issue; I mean, how diverse is ''Into the Grave''?
