"If Eminem Was Black..."

He would of sold half, but we didn't have to go to Lincoln High School to know that.

On some real stuff. After Relapse (2X Platinum) and Encore ( 4X platinum), it's amazing he sold what he did. Straight up - selling half is an overstatement.

If Eminem was black, skills and all, he'd probably be selling like Papoose.

Also makes you think about racism in America. Or maybe it's due to people relating more to people that look like them. Or even worse...the latter and precedent are the same thing...

Ha ha. I think Eminem blazed the way and burned it for others too. It's like once it's been done, people ain't falling for it as much. Notice his sales despite his multi platinum Encore and Relapse albums.

i mean, that's amazing what you just said. you have me looking at things in a whole different light right now.

i'm talking PARADIGM SHIFT dude, fuckin paradigm shift.

in all my years on this board, and in all my years in REAL LIFE, and the thousands of conversations i've had about hip hop and rap music in general, i have never, ever, never ever NEVER heard such a poignant, original, and well-thought-out comment.

you should apply to XXL or something. fuck that, XXL should apply to YOU

because you are what we all need right now--not just here in the lesson--not just here on the internet--but i'm talking every form of available media--a deep, unique, master critic capable of thoughts so ahead of their time reading them's like stepping into another dimension of mind where beauty and intelligence merge to form the closest equivalent to GOD that we have experienced

they need to make a fuckin APP for you dude--we will call it BEAUTELLIGENCE--and it will grant us inner access to your amazing insight and astute inquiry and lead us, the human race, into a future beyond what we thought possible

please send me your address. i would like to send you a plaque with your name engraved on it as well as your face, among history's greatest thinkers, for that riveting comment of yours...so poetic, so prophetic, so ringing with truth, depth, and ingenuity..."IF EMINEM WAS BLACK HE WOULDN'T HAVE SOLD HALF AS MANY UNITS"

indeed brother, indeed

riveting.

this bud's for you

about later Eminem. The Eminem of Relapse and Recovery. Emimen the pop star. The Eminem that white people who don't care about hip hop regularly say "I don't really like rap....except some Eminem".

If he was black he wouldn't have been shit from the beginning, but not for any of the reasons you named above. Part of the reason early Emimen (The Slim Shady LP) came onto the scene and flipped the whole damn rap world was because he was well aware of what he could and couldn't do as a white man. If he were black, he would've done what other new rappers did, pick whatevers hot and run with it. In that era, probably some type of gangster rap, if he was black he would've came in and talked about that rough hood life in Detroit, acted bad as hell and went with it.

Since he knew no one was buying that shit from a white guy, he didn't come like that. He came like a psycho, emotional, drug abusing, funny as fuck rapper and got everybody (regardless of race, revisionists can say what they want, but in the early days it wasn't just white people bumping him) playing his shit and buying his albums.

The guy went around something that was supposed to hold him back and found a way to rap and get taken seriously, as opposed to early attempts by people like Vanilla Ice and such.

Although in truth, this is still a simplified attempt at explaining why he's popular without chalking it all up to race.

Some would say that Redman did the a lot of wild shit Eminem did years earlier and didn't get nearly as much attention.

and you said it better than I would have, so kudos. This is the point to me as well. A black rapper couldn't have been successful doing what Em did, but on the other hand, that was his own unique lane that he invented to make himself as successful as he was. He needed to have both that lane and skills at an unprecedented level (for a white rapper - though right out the gate he was better than the vast majority of black rappers as well) to get into that superstar bracket.

If he'd had only the gimmick he would have fallen off after probably one or two albums and would be a punchline today. If he'd had only the mic skills he would have probably never gone platinum in the first place - might still be toiling away in the underground making well-respected but fairly dull albums. And if he'd had neither, he'd be nobody, like thousands of other white rappers. Look at Asher Roth, who had reasonable skills and a gimmick that was just not as good as Em's. Where's that motherfucker today, and where will he be in ten years? Forgotten or a punchline.

I mean, of course white folks wouldn't dig him like that if he was black.
my question is... would black folks have accepted him if a black dude
was rapping about the shit he was rapping about?

EDIT: I guess reply number 5 sort of touched on this already.

There's a whole lotta things that em talks about that are cool amongst white kids but not with blacks, speaking generally of course.

Stuff like hating your mom, certain types of drugs like mushrooms, dressing up like a woman in videos, referencing trailer parks, referring to yourself as a 'mean cocksucker', just generally not acting 'cool' or suave, etc. I'd imagine a black artist that spoke about those things would probably have an abnormally larger white audience too.

It's kinda hard to describe but I think it's pretty clear to see. He rapped about things that were more relatable to white kids than other hip hop artists. He never really pandered to black people like Serch or V Ice. Although I checked out an interview he did with Howard Stern when he first came out and he was faking a 'black' accent/vernacular that was pretty annoying. He doesn't really do that anymore thankfully.

Downplaying eminem is such a ridiculous thing to me.

The most interesting, dominant force in the pop music world in the 00's. He goes beyond hip hop because he will represent the 00's like Madonna represents the 90's and MJ represents the 80's.

You look at the highest grossing acts of the 00's in 20 years from now, Eminem will stand out as the most significant in revivalists and kids looking back. He waves the hip hop flag too. But it's his writing that will last.

but that guy is the most overated, lying, punchable pieces of shit I've ever seen.

Jack White.

He has NO soul to me. He can't play a lick. His whole aesthetic appeal was tonal cause he used room mics and analog compressors. Gimmick's long been done. Please let him continue to take himself seriously though. It's hilarious.

it wasn't just about the sound.
it was more like an experiemnt in minimalism.

not saying you have to like it,
but it wasn't just a gimmick.
some of those riffs were cool as fuck to me.

they're an example of how much you can
strip out of a song,

and still have rock & roll.

it's not for everybody, but i dig the
white stripes. (i wouldn't say he has "soul," though).

You post something and I'll break it down. Can't believe some clips people post here thinking it shows J White's greatness. He's a joke to me.

A kick drum and closed hat over and over again....with room sound.

You enjoy the sonics....the retro sound. Jack White can't play guitar for shit. I watched him play piano in that movie with Edge and Page. He was a shithead. He is phony.

He is the most lyingest little shit too. So hilariously inept. He thought he was gonna be able to create a myth about himself...and it's fallen flat on anyone that knows good music.

To watch this guy try to 'evoke' the blues would be offensive if it wasn't so hilarious.

and yet, somehow...
it's one of the best songs ever written lol.

to me, it's about more than the sonics.
the lick to seven nation army is just so... primal.

granted, the production is a HUGE factor.
i doubt i would like it if that lick if the production
was shitty.

just like i wouldn't like "louie louie"
if the band didn't sound like it was about to fall apart,
and "billie jean" sound like "billie jean"
if those kicks and snares didn't sound so PERFECT.

sure, the production is a huge part of the draw.
but he's responsible for the production,
so that's not a knock on jack white.

the whtie stripes just work for me.

Don't evoke that argument on behalf of Jack White.

That's part of his lie. He knows nothing of which he speaks. I've seen him talking about blues and I can't hear anything he says.

The Strokes got big at the same time cause they write great pop songs. Jack White can't do nothing except try to be hip. That's my angle.
