He will be missed. I remember seeing him at the Fresh Fest in the 80's. Those guys knew how to rock a crowd. I really enjoyed his acting too. He is in the recent movie The Tower Heist with Eddie Murphy. My favorite tune by him and The Boyz:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1L6gqMV3hiI&ob=av2e

It's pretty nice, smooth vibe that he's known for. Heavy was one of my favorite hip hop cats during my middle school and high school years. It sucks that despite his success, cats fronted on him because he wasn't all thuggish-ruggish. He kept it classy and respectful every time.

First I wake up this morning, turned on Sports Center and find out that Joe Frazier had passed.

Now this. Heavy D was one of those MC's that seemed to always have a good time when he was making a record or performing live some where. Gone way too soon.

In a genre that was and is no caught up in the image of "keeping real," Heavy D always managed to stay true to himself. Over the course of his run, hip-hop morphed several times, yet from 1987 to 1997 Hev always managed to stay relevant by moving with the times, but never losing himself in them.

Often, he was a refreshing bit of balance to the militancy and then gangsterism of the late '80s/early '90s, but at the same time, he never sacrificed the hip-hop elements to crossover. He could give you a "Now That We Found Love," and then, just as heads might start to hate just a little bit, he could turn around a hit you in the head with "You Can't See," flowing harder than many of the "elites" of the day.

In going back through his catalog this evening, I'm reminded all over again of perhaps the single element of who he was that was most responsible for his wide reaching appeal. Positivity. Not necessarily in the "conscious" sense, though he had those moments too (who came stronger than Hev on "Self Destruction"?). But, he seemed to have an enthusiasm for life and everything in it that came through in all his music. Something that we could frankly use a lot more of in today's scene. Many of his biggest hits were about women and relationships, but he was one of the few rappers that never crossed the line into misogyny. Even when kicking a busted gold digger to the curb, he still had "nothin' but love."

RIP to the Overweight Lover, Entertainer of Many

Make it stop! I can't take no more bad news this week!

Man I will never forget seeing him at the Philadelphia Spectrum during the Big Tyme era for the Cocacola Superfest.

Scheduled smack into the middle of the bill, Heavy D & Da Boyz blew 3XDope, Kool Moe Dee, Guy & even closer MC Hammer off the stage that night.

I wanna say it was the night before Trouble T-Roy died falling off a roof after a show on that tour but I could be off by a matter of days/months.

I was 13 & actually went with my boy and his parents as chaperones (who spent half the show being shocked at the level of profanity throughout each set along with the countless fights in every section).

The only one set that even they enjoyed was The Heavster.

"Heavy is an entertainer!" I remeber my boy's old man exclaiming with a degree of certainty coupled with surprise.

And he really was.

I still remember him doing the intro to 'We Got Our Own Thing' by worming up that tongue-twisting 'diddlediddlediddlydee' hook a capella before the song started, pausing at times & giving the stop motion to the crowd so he could 'get it together' before trying it from the top again.

That went on for about two straight minutes with the crowd getting whipped into an anticipatory frenzy so feverish that by the time the record dropped you could barely make out the music from Eddie F's turntables feeding through the speakers up in the upper-level.

That set was also 45-minute-straight period where I didn't see fists flying or people getting thrown down rows of stairs.

By sheer force of his 'Larger Than Life'/gregarious persona which belied the fact that despite being a true hip-hopper you could also be a genuinely nice/warm-hearted dude with a sense of humor about yourself.

He also worked his ass off & didn't rely on any crutches to get over.

Dude could rap, dance & knew how to put a record together.

Joe Frazier is probably a larger figure historically (particularly in the city where I was born) but for some reason this one hurts my soul in a much more personal way.

Heavy was a dude who came up in an era when I was growing up in hip-hop. He was a guy you felt like you knew & even if you didn't would make an impression on you if you came across him on or offstage.

The last time I saw him perform in person was at the Common Ground Foundation benefit about two years ago as a surprise guest.

I had made it up to the front by that point & even though I really never liked 'Now That We Found Love' he sold it so well that I couldn't help but have a Kool-Aid smile during it while he bopped about onstage, eventually letting the crowd sing the chorus while the lightman flicked the house lights on & off in time.

Rest In Peace to the Overweight Lover, you definitely distributed large amounts of happiness whenever you were in the house.

Here's wishing you a Peaceful Journey.

Trouble T-Roy died on their next tour during summer 1990, the one with Public Enemy, Queen Latifah, Kid N Play, and Digital Underground.

I do remember that tour with Hammer and Three Times Dope and stuff though. Missed it when it came to Oakland, which was probably a good thing, 'cause there was a near riot that night, and it was kinda sparked by Heavy D. I'll forgive for that one though...

Always an underrated act...Played a huge part in pushing hip-hop into the mainstream for the New Jack Swing generation and beyond.....And the cool part of it all? He still made good music....

Heavy D always seemed like he aimed to please especially onstage.

You want to see how to put on a live show as a hip-hop artist? Go to You Tube and watch Heavy D perform...

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

I loved Hev because he was, well, Hev. He had a lane and stuck in it. Didn't try to get too thug, to soft, etc. He did his thing, and was always nice behind the mic. I respected his hustle with his acting thing too.

It really hurts because he's one of the guys we grew up listening to, Did the dance steps to. Memorized the scratches on the record. They don't make 'em like that no more.

RIP Heavy D

I came home got online and the first thing I see is messages about the passing of Heavy D. which I couldn’t believe but after seeing more & more of the same, I guess it’s true.

I’m really sad to hear about him dying since you would never think he would die so young, no he wasn’t young by some people but to me if you die before the age of 50 that’s young to me.

Heavy D. you will be missed but your music will keep your memory alive.....Rest In Peace.

In response to Reply # 0

That sounds slightly like a diss but its not at all. I grew up in a household where my dad considered himself a music man (the latest hi-fi system, tons of records and weekend trips to the record store) but he was just not feeling rap music. He listened to everything (introduced me to Prince) but at best he was tolerant of our Beastie Boys, LL Cool J & Run DMC records and we generally turned it down or off when he was around.

I think the artist that generally changed that was Heavy D. My cousins grew up near Mt. Vernon so I think they introduced it to our household but it didn't take long for my dad to be hooked. I can just remember riding around with my dad jamming to "The Overweight Lover's in the House". It was great to have a rap record that I could play from start to finish, not have to worry about being embarrassed in front of my pops AND wasn't corny at all.

Heavy D was the gateway that lead my pops to Public Enemy which lead to other hip-hop acts and now my dad is the biggest Biggie & Tupac fan.

Thanks Heavy D. RIP.

Just like stated earlier, Heavy was the rapper that your Mom liked but he was still cool. His music was all ways positive and you respected him because he was always himself.

Wow man.

RIP Heavy D

hearing about his death. Hev made it possible for cats to rap and be themselves and still get respect before the kanye's, phonte's and drake's of the world.

I've been avoiding his music and vids all day but I couldn't hold out much longer..this sucks.

Much respect Big Belly Gorgon. Large up..

Heavy D Mourned by Diddy, Al Sharpton, Obama at Emotional Hometown Funeral
'Heavy D was the first person to believe in me,' says Diddy

For all of the emotions usually equated with death, Dwight "Heavy D" Myers' funeral was billed as a celebration of the artist's life. As such, it could not – and would not – be such a sad affair. As the mayor-elect of Heavy's hometown of Mount Vernon, New York put it, "We are not here because Heavy D died. We are here because Heavy D lived."

What became clear, from within the two overflowing halls of Mount Vernon's Grace Baptist Church, was that Heavy D had touched countless lives – particularly in the hip-hop and African-American communities. Jay-Z, Usher, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, John Legend, Denzel Washington and Queen Latifah were spotted walking in; a list at one of the security check-ins included the names of Sony Music's Chairman/CEO Doug Morris and Doug E. Fresh. Three Mount Vernon police officers sat down the row from BET President Stephen Hill. A woman and her daughter held a VIP pass from a concert Heavy D must have performed years ago, just as a cab driver had shown off photos of himself and Heavy from their shared high school days. "There's stories on every corner of this city, of people he helped," said the pastor, without exaggeration.

His presence was felt far beyond that, though. Rev. Al Sharpton – once a heavy man himself, he noted – called Heavy D's young daughter Xea up as he read a letter that he felt she should hold onto: "We extend our heartfelt condolences at this difficult time. He will be remembered for his infectious optimism and many contributions to American music. Please know that you and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers." It seemed like a nice tribute but relatively unremarkable until Sharpton quickly added, "That's from the President of the United States of America. I want you to frame that."

Then it was Diddy's turn to speak. "Heavy D was the first person to believe in me," he said, letting the words sink into the carpet. "He's the person who made me who I am today." Visibly shaken, he had been seated in the front row, next to Heavy D's parents, directly in front of Xea. Diddy spoke of more innocent times: how he had concocted a master plan to become Heavy D's manager (though Heavy never went along with it); how he had thought Heavy had really made it to the big time when he saw that he had an apartment with wall-to-wall carpeting (which included carpets on the walls); how Heavy D had once stolen apple turnover from Diddy, and how – though he'd never admitted theft – Diddy would now forgive him. In the middle of the jokes, Diddy said, "I'll admit that I took Hev for granted. I always thought he'd be there." It was a crushing moment; the weariness in his face showed the pain behind the laughter.

(Earlier, Teddy Riley – who produced Heavy's hit "Now That We Found Love" and "Jam," Heavy's 1991 collaboration with Michael Jackson – told Rolling Stone, "When Puffy left Uptown and he got Biggie, to me that was him saying, ‘If I can’t have Heavy, I’ve got to go make my own Heavy.'")

Many spoke of positivity, of the love that Heavy so easily gave, of Thanksgiving turkey giveaways to the entirety of Mount Vernon. Charity on the corner, love in song, a big man all around – and a surprisingly agile dancer: "Hev didn't know how big he was," said Uptown Records founder Andre Harrell, chuckling. Later, Diddy said, "When he was dancing, he wasn't like a big guy dancing. He was like a skinny guy dancing, but he was like a big guy?" Noted Sharpton, "James Brown made us black and proud, but Hev made us fat and proud."

Johnny Gill, Yolanda Adams, Heavy D's nieces and Kim Burrell each sang, their voices peeling the paint off the walls, beautiful and heart-wrenching. R&B singer Anthony Hamilton walked through the saddest version of Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come," a look to tomorrow, a torch held to the past.

It was a deeply spiritual ceremony, religion offering a silver lining amongst darker clouds, a tribute to a life cut short just as it was starting to pick up again. And so, we need not worry about Heavy. The pastor said, "Heavy asked , 'Ask heaven, heaven, is there room for me?' I say, St. Peter's gonna have to expand the rooms!"
