lol @ him using the eminem-like "wuh-oh" on the chorus for "Till I Get There"

EDIT: Also, I get the feeling from "Till I Get There" that maybe he wrote these verses for "Billionaire" (the song with the guy who calls himself "Travie" and Bruno Mars). Could that be a possibility seeing as he first had "Airplanes" too?

Plus raps over most people's heads + slightly annoying voice. AND he passed on two of pop-raps biggest hits...BOB's adidas commercial shoulda been Lupe's. Too bad.

I've conceded that yes, this may be due to his label commandeering his artistic vision. However, I'd wager most hip-hop fans have heard his brand already. If they aint feeling it now, they wont even check for it later.

But isn't this style of hooks normal for radio rap? I mean doesn't Eminem, B.O.B., Drake, etc.

lupe is getting MAD corny... Enemy of the State was cool cuz he left the hooks off and he was just kind of stream-of-consciousness spitting... he's better at that than over-thinking shit and "outsmarting" himself to the point where it just gets corny... it sounds like he's bought into himself and his own image a little *too* much.. it's not hard to sound "revolutionary" and say shit that "others are afraid to say" when audiences don't know what the fuck they're talking about to begin w/.. or when audiences will settle for headlines w/o the articles.. that's what lupe sounds to me.. like McRevolutionary..

Like I bought his first album, listened to his albums a few times, and just didn't enjoy them. Yeah, he has talent...but it doesn't translate, and has never been interesting enough for me to get into like that. The 1st was decent and had some songs I liked..and some great quotes, concepts, etc. etc. But nothing spectacular

show turnout, merch, new music discovery? The Hot-whatever lists seem to only impress industry heads.

Also you gotta remember, with the advent of the internet...the limitations of regional radio play & clear channel approved playlists significantly reduce its strength. The "impressions" those lists are based off of is basically fickle teenagers. What value can one hold in that?

deductive reasoning isn't your strong suit if you didn't get the answer from those links.

i'll make it even clearer for you. would you say these are "radio" or "non-radio" artists?

>new music discovery

this is the biggest failure of radio now, but it's also not what we were talking about.

>The Hot-whatever
>lists seem to only impress industry heads.

the only "impression" i wanted to give you was reality. you don't think there is any correlation between terrestrial radio play and sales, which is absurd and ignorant at best, delusional at worst. longevity may not be what it was, but i don't think the internet gives "non-radio" artists any longer careers and certainly not bigger sales than radio play artists, and the same skewed perspective of longevity is generally about what or less than artists who *used to* get radio play still enjoy. commercial radio sucks, but it's still a factor.

Corny singing hooks on every track by various disaffected no name crackers.

Zero sample clearance budget. Not one track has a sample (except maybe All Black Everything). Its all cheesy soft synths. There's even autotune here and there.

The drums are all buttery soft (mastering engineer's fault, maybe?)

There are no hits on here at all. You'd think that for completely embracing the "pop" sound, he'd at least have some undeniable hits. Even BoB had a couple...idk. None on here.

Overall impression: This is sad. I cant possibly believe Lupe had any artistic integrity on this album. I could give him a break if there were some hits on here, but it just sounds like a generic album that is a lower quality version of that it is trying to copy. I'm embarassed for the dude. He went full pop retard.

i feel like all hip-hop released these days has buttery soft drums. I really haven't heard hard, condensed, or compact drums in YEARS. i really have no idea what happened or why they are engineering it this way. even dr. dre nowadays mixes his drums to sound more soft, expansive, airy, and open, and its just like omg what is happening to this world. for real.

I'll admit, I haven't heard them. But out of what I have, and can remember from what I've heard, the drums tend to sound soft.

Don't put this shit on Lupe... it was this or be buried forever

But yeah, your point really hit me, that there is one track that samples.

0 tracks produced by Soundtrakk.... you know, the guy who did Kick, Push, Superstar, Paris Tokyo

Instead, he was fed shitty snyth beats and taken off his own hooks. The beats seriously take any feeling out of the lyrics

I think he's a original, high-skilled MC. (Though I wouldn't be surprised if I'm in the minority on that as well.)

The only problem I don't like a lot of the songs he ends up making. He has terrible beats, terrible hooks, and just generally questionable songs. I like F&L as a first album and, like everyone, saw almost infinite amounts of potential. I didn't like The Cool, I saw him live and he it wasn't good, and this new shit is what it is.

He needs somebody to help orchestrate his albums for him or something.

I actually prefer The Cool to F & L. I'm definitely in the minority there, but I think The Cool is very under-rated and his (lack of) breath control on F&L really brought that album down for me.

That being said...

I haven't heard this new album. BUT-

People say this sounds pop as hell, but are mad at him for passing on Nuthin On You and Airplanes???

Usually artists get hated on for ending up on commericals, but people are mad it wasnt him on an Adidas ad??

There are a few songs with BUZZ (Beamin, Shining Down, and I know others I am missing)...why wouldn't the label want those on the album?

This means Lupe is "done"??? Did Nastradamus kill Nas career? Just seems like The Lesson's double standards are yet again kicking in. Maybe it is a horrible album (again, haven't heard it)...but does that mean he is done when it has NEVER meant that for anyone else??

Is he done with Atlantic now?

This is the same dude who threw HHID out of his car window, right? (and usually I defend him, but if this is really that bad...)

I'll still probably wait and buy it in all honesty. I'm a fan of the guy, even though it is frustrating sometimes.

I do think a producer guiding his albums would be good for Lu though- that is a good idea. But then again I think that is usually a good idea for most artists...

http://www.complex.com/music/2011/02/interview-lupe-fiasco-hates-lasers?page=1

The last time we spoke with Lupe Fiasco, things were not looking good. His oft-delayed third album, Lasers, seemed destined for major label limbo and Lupe was busying himself with side projects like Japanese Cartoon—his post-punk rock band—and climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Lupe’s fans fought back and took things into their own hands by protesting the delay of Lasers. And then a ray of hope: Lupe tweeted a picture of himself with Atlantic Records Chief Operating Officer, Julie Greenwald, and the long-standing feud between him and the label seemed resolved. Shortly thereafter Lasers was given a release date, and it looked like everything was going to be alright.

But pictures can be deceiving. Despite having a legitimate hit on his hands with “The Show Goes On,” and having a solid release date of March 8 for his album, things between Lupe and Atlantic Records haven’t really been resolved. We got on the phone with Lupe and he went off about how he was pressured into doing “The Show Goes On,” why he’s still not cool with Atlantic Records, and why he (sometimes) hates his own album.

“There’s nothing really to tell about that record, to be honest. I didn’t have nothing to do with that record. That was the label’s record. That wasn’t like I knew the producer or knew the writer or anything like that. That was one of those records the record company gave me, stuff they wanted me to rap about. It wasn’t like, ‘Hey I did this and I went to a mountain and found inspiration and it was this.’ I was backstage at a show at the House of Blues in L.A. and the president of came to me and said, ‘Hey check this out, I got this song.’ He played ‘Show Goes On’ for me on the iPod. I was used to it because they presented me like ten other songs in the same fashion or via email. So for me, at that point, it was just another record like, ‘Is this a song you want me to do?’ There was nothing special about it for me at that point. It was like, ‘You know we still want off the label, right?’ That was the conversations we were having.

“I did the record maybe a couple weeks after I initially heard it. We were on tour and I didn’t have the schedule to go record it, so the first instance that I had to actually go do it, I went and knocked it out. I knocked out ‘Never Forget You’ that same day. Then we had ‘Show Goes On’ for two, three months completed in some fashion. It was never a record like, ‘Hey! Lupe is super excited about ‘Show Goes On.’’ At that point, I was just drained. I was like, ‘Whatever. Another song, another day, another dollar.’

“I had to do ‘Show Goes On,’ that was like the big chip on the table. I had to do it and it had to be the first single if the record was going to come out. And then there’s ‘Never Forget You’ —which is another record I had nothing to do with—which became another bargaining chip, like, ‘Yo, after ‘Show Goes On’ there’s going to be this other record that you had nothing to do with.’ And I know John Legend, he’s a cool dude. But it was just a record he had sitting around and Exec A or Exec B heard it, and they were like, ‘Oh yeah! We’re going to put this on Lupe.’ And it wasn’t like, ‘Hey Lupe, do you like this song?’ it was like, ‘You got to do this record.’ At that point, I had already done ten records . It was like I’d fly out from whatever spot I’m vacationing in, cut these records, and fly back.”

Why He Hates Lasers

“One thing I try to stress about this project is, I love and hate this album. I listen to it and I’ll like some of the songs. But when I think about what it took to actually get the record together and everything that I went through on this record—which is something I can’t separate—I hate this album. A lot of the songs that are on the album, I’m kinda neutral to. Not that I don’t like them, or that I hate them, it’s just I know the process that went behind it. I know the sneaky business deal that went down behind this song, or the artist or singer or songwriter who wrote this hook and didn’t want to give me this song in the first place. So when I have that kind of knowledge behind it, I’m just kind of neutral to it like, ‘Another day, another dollar.’ As opposed something like The Cool, which is more of my own blood, sweat, and tears, and my own control. With this record, I’m little bit more neutral as to the love for the record.

“I don’t like the process behind Lasers. The music is dope but I just don’t like the process. We were literally at the point where all this music was done except for a couple songs that we did after the protest. So the bulk of the album was done. And we were talking about shelving the album and going to another label, that’s where we were like, ‘If you put the record out, put it out. Either move on to another album or can it and we’ll do other records at another label.’ The business of it got solved. I’m happy for the fans, this is their album. This is the album that they fought for and that’s what made me do songs like ‘Words I Never Said’ and ‘All Black Everything.’

”The came and put their lives on the line in some instances—because you never know what could happen, it could have been a stampede. I look at that as very inspiring and motivational. That was one of the only reasons the label got on the phone and wanted to have that meeting, they seen the outpouring of support and the critique that was beginning to mobilize via the Internet. CNN, MTV, and Village Voice was picking up the story of the protest and actually interviewing the kids and the kids was speaking their piece. And it wasn’t the most glorifying things that they were saying. I think that, as well as the pressure of the business itself, where it was at a point like, ‘Look, Lupe is not going to come into the building at all.’ It was periods of stalemate where I wasn’t going into Atlantic Records. I had nothing against the average employees—a lot of those people are my friends—but the executive attitude was something I did not like.

“We were literally going on tour and a lot of the records that are on the album that the record company was saying, ‘Hey we don’t like this record, it’s not up to par,’ and we already been performing them for two years. And you got kids who know all the words to a lot of the records that are going to come out because our thing was, ‘Alright, if you’re not going to put it out, we’ll perform it and go on tour.’ For me, there’s always another outlet that can be more meaningful than having a release date. Especially, if an album is coming out and you’re not making no money off of it then what’s the point? How excited can you possibly be? My excitement comes from being on the stage.

“For me, it’s the fans and for them to get a victory and for us to get a release date. That’s all we really wanted the whole time like, ‘Either give us a release date or let us go.’ And they were like, ‘No, we’re not giving you either one of those.’ So it was like, ‘Well, I guess I’ll just go back on tour, go climb a mountain, and busy myself with other things until this stuff gets situated.’ it depends on what level of education you have in the music business. For some people that’s amazing like, ‘Oh my God! My life is going to change and blah, blah, blah.’ For other people, it kind of means nothing. It’s like, ‘Another album out but the main root of the problem is still unsolved.’ And then there are records you literally had nothing to do with. That was a part of the compromise. Compromise doesn’t mean everybody is going to be happy, it’s just we’re going to do the best thing we can. The best thing for both parties is for this album to come out. Whether that means we’re homies or whether that means everything is cool now, that’s a different story.

On “Words I Never Said”

“Alex Da Kid was trying to work with me for a couple years, as far back as The Cool. He was submitting tracks and different things. And that was the one record that really caught my attention. The hook was already on it with Skylar. The first day I heard it, I went into the studio and recorded it. The song had a bridge we took out because initially, the song was supposed to be about a relationship, like a boyfriend/girlfriend, Drake song or something. And I’m like, ‘Nah, I’m going to talk about world affairs.’ I’ve been talking about since back on Food and Liquor. It’s weird to me that people forget that I had songs called ‘American Terrorist.’ And I’ve been kind of toeing that line whether it be on freestyles or what have you. I’ve always been talking about the same thing, so when people ask me what’s different with this album, I just say the music. The messages on the album, whether they’re little more or less lyrical than their predecessors, I’m basically saying the same things I’ve said on other mixtapes and albums. is not a big step for me. It’s not me striving to do anything different.”

72. "Damn i wonder did Atlantic Give BoB all those singles too?"
In response to Reply # 23

That kinda takes away from the artist if you
ask me

Its like cheating...well not cheating but
damn i used to think that artists had
talent, and knew how to create records
which was the reason they were signed in the first place

i didnt think it went down like this;
"We have a beat, we a have a hook, we need your verses"

and we all know Lupe is talented
but damn, the labels are really manufacturing
songs and shit, thats crazy

does Atlantic do this for everyone?
(Wiz, TI, etc)

The only thing I'm disappointed in is the fact that lu has a song called all black everything and it's not over a lex luger beat as well as isn't rapping about something materialistic.

I like the fact that Atlantic made him rap over some of these songs. They're good records. Good luck to him on finding another label that will clear an album with a song called American Terrorist.

This is an album of the year candidate and I don't even stan for dude like that.

Let me get this straight: I should kill myself for liking a hip-hop album that you and the rest of Lupe's fans don't like?

Hoe ass nigga FUCK YOU. How about you come do it for me? www.expedia.com

This album is good. Niggas should support Lupe since they are the reason for the album's release. A few of the songs could have stayed on the cutting room floor. However, it wasn't going to get released at all. This is a good record and I will buy the record when it comes out.

I can see where the label is coming from to an extant as well.

I personally can't believe something like this even happens in 2011, but here we are.

Nonetheless, on their end they've been waiting for just one hit from this supposedly excellent rapper for some time now and they haven't gotten it. And, to be honest, there's reason to believe it will never arrive.

In response to Reply # 0

I don't know, I feel like even with those albums the beats weren't always completely enjoyable and you had his breath-control issues on F&L that were annoying. AND he has a weak voice AND he came off pretty wack off records, BUT I still was fan because lyrically he was incredible and sometimes the beats he picked were dope. He has a lot of good songs. I saw him live once and thought he did a really well, too.

But now it's just too much with the ultra-dramatic beats and angsty hook singing. Not sure if it's entirely the label's fault or this is just where he wants to be musically, but I'ma have to pass this go'round. Hopefully he can get back to raps and beats at some point.

I don't like the beat anymore because its just a loop. ALC didn't FLIP IT ENOUGH!

He has never impressed me. His whole career has been a speculative mess. I can't finish any of his albums... not even half way. The RnB community can thank him for giving a voice to Bruno Mars, but that's his only achievement.

it is. however, i'm gonna assume those two have a history of the back & forths. telling a complete e-stranger that you're gonna stab her and her family is a little different. not that THAT makes it ok, but some people have no problem with that type of banter.

OK, so my guess is this - first he recorded LupEND, albeit probably in rough and not completely finished form.

Then he started working on the great american rap album.

Then he started working on lasers.

Then he started working on the great american rap album again, this time it was called 'food and liquor 2: the great american rap album'.

then he started working on "lasers", and released "lasers".

Granted all of these albums might have shared some songs, and had maybe songs transferred between them. But it sounds like he has at least 4-5 albums worth of good material in the vault, and was forced to release basically some of the worst of what he had.

the most insane part was that The Cool was truly his album, he had sole creative control, it was completely abstract and complicated, and it sold great and had a hit single. Then some genius from the label i guess decided that that formula would fail if tried again, and that it would be a better bet to have him make a BoB type album.

Honestly, he doesn't even have to transfer to an independent label. Other majors would be able to get his product out there the way he wanted it, and still gotten it to sell. It's not even like Lupe uses the most expensive producers. I mean Janelle Monae released her album on a major, so there's no reason lupe can't pull it off again...

releases it on a major, on an indie, or himself? it's not like the FNF producers, the neptunes, or kanye are going to stop fucking with him whatever he does. other artists and producers want to work with him, too. rappers have proven in recent months and years that you don't even need to be signed to have a hit radio single or video.

being on a major gets you a big enough budget to work with certain big names who demand to be well paid. pharrell and kanye would work with him if he were pennyless, no doubt. But - i don't fully understand the finances of it all - is it the case that guys like pharrell and kanye work with whoever, but then if you can't come up with the $$$, they recirculate the beat to someone who can?

also, i mean from a fan perspective what i want most is for lupe to be able to release the music he wants to release. but at the same time, major labels are better at promotion, and it is cool from a fan perspective to see art that you like being promoted for the world to see, and being exposed to a lot of mainstream audiences who wouldn't normally see it. I felt that this happened with both F & L and The Cool, actually, which was part of what made those albums so cool to be a part of simply as a fan of them. they kind of had movements surrounding them, and the movements would have been smaller if they were released on an indie label.

>being on a major gets you a big enough budget to work with

this would apply if lupe was a new jack, but he's been around long enough to get a lot of support and earn a lot of favors.

>kanye would work with him if he were pennyless, no doubt. But
>- i don't fully understand the finances of it all - is it the
>case that guys like pharrell and kanye work with whoever, but
>then if you can't come up with the $$$, they recirculate the

i don't know about reusing unreleased beats, but i'm sure the neptunes and kanye don't or wouldn't charge lupe their full production or appearance fees.

>also, i mean from a fan perspective what i want most is for
>lupe to be able to release the music he wants to release.

me, too, and i would think self-releasing it or putting it out through an indie label would allow him to do that, but it's true that there are probably other majors that would give him at least more creative freedom than atlantic is right now.

>but
>at the same time, major labels are better at promotion, and it
>is cool from a fan perspective to see art that you like being
>promoted for the world to see, and being exposed to a lot of

this used to ring a lot truer than it does now. too many failings on the part of the majors and too many victories on the part of unsigned and indie label artists prevent me from cosigning this point.

>I felt that
>this happened with both F & L and The Cool, actually, which
>was part of what made those albums so cool to be a part of

as someone who (also) was a fan of lupe from the mixtapes, i was proud to see lupe's success with F&L. it felt like an artist of substance beat the odds and made it. at this point, he's established himself artistically and with his fanbase, so if his idiotic label doesn't get him, he should try to move on to someone who will. if that means an indie rather than major label, that's not necessarily going to keep him from reaching the same or an even bigger audience because the climate has changed.

but if his interview is really true and I doubt that it isn't cos of all the delays its another label fail imo. It would explain why the record would sound half-stepped or just blah...if an artist feels forced to do something best believe the output will sound forced. Haven't heard the record yet but these opinions won't help me check it out either.

im not gonna lie, i was borderline depressed after my first listen

this album was everything i was hoping it wouldn't be, which explains why i made post #32

but i've played it a few times since and its definitely grown on me. i still have a hard time listening to the hooks on "out of my head" and "words i never said" but other than that, this is a pretty good album

(see: "till i get there", "show goes on", "all black everything", "state run radio", "i dont wanna care right now", "coming up")

lupe didn't make this album for the hip-hop heads. the goal was to create an album that would be more accessible to the masses while at the same time exposing them to positive ideas/concepts that those masses wouldn't otherwise have been exposed to anywhere else in mainstream media

sure, it's not as good as it could've been, but lupe did the best with the hand that he was dealt and should be applauded for that. if you go through the songs it isn't hard to differentiate between the ones that were forced upon him and the ones he was actually involved in/genuinely wanted to do

ya'll are acting like he isn't still rapping his ass off. if you can look past the overdramatic production and the angsty pop/punk hooks, lasers is solid

That said, take out the Trey Songz mess, and the track before it, add in shining down and I'm Beaming and you have something that is pretty listenable pop record.

Why is this album getting so much attention and the stellar Shaolin Vs. Wu-Tang is being ignored. I demand answers!

http://blogs.suntimes.com/music/2011/03/lupe_fiasco_does_what_hes_told.html

He talks about Atlantic freezing the budget for his album and forcing him to dumb it down.

heres an excerpt:

"I was specifically told" -- Fiasco chuckled -- "'Don't rap too deep on this record.'" He laughed some more. "That was a specific order from the top. 'You're rapping too fast or too slow, or it's too complex.' ...

There are consequences and combat that comes from that process and the eventual compromise. With me, though, I'm not writing about someone else. I'm writing about me. This is my life. It's very personal for me. So for somebody to kind of put their fingers in that and play with that, it becomes more damaging."

"I am a hostage," Fiasco said. "I gave them what they wanted. If I didn't, at the end of the day the album wasn't coming out."

He also says The Great American Rap Album has a "different sound" and should be out by the end of the year.

If you dont like this album why are you guys blaming the label?

Even lupe said they forced him to record 2 songs

That's 2 out of 12. Some of these records (beautiful lasers, state run radio) lu has been performing since last year.

So you kinda gotta blame him. He fought the SMASHES (airplanes, nothing on u) and then was forced to take the "not-so-good" versions of them.

I think he was intent on making a more commercial album after Superstar and the Twilight siundtrack record and he just left off those important anchors that made The Cool balance out.

"superstar" got the atlantic green light cuz TI went to jail. This time around they knew Lu was a bigger star so they wanted him to be a marquee artist

Pooh bear uses autotune a ton. That ain't anything new.

Atlantic only cares about singles because the single make them money. Sales & Publishing

Lupe used Pooh Bear because he's a good writer and his homey. Probably got him on the cheap and kept it in-house.

The battle between them was simple. Lupe wants ALL things in-house to maximize HIS dollars and ALL the credit and the Label is like "No you gotta give us some money from everything"

Do you know something we don't? lol j/w

Though Lupe did give that rant about how Atlantic wanted him to sign a 360 deal, that would give them a cut of everything he did...

But still, Lupe worked with The Neptunes plenty these past couple of years, and they weren't in house. If he completely had his way, there would be at least a few non-in house features and producers on the final product...

I mean... I don't really see it happening because the biggest names (other than atmosphere & brother ali) on that rhymesayers roster are Freeway & Evidence.

The John Legend song feels forced (cuz it is) and some of the production is a little too glossy for me, but as a whole, it's not a bad album to me, and has six or seven very good songs.

I kept about five joints on my iTunes and I certainly don't skip them.

Liked the same tracks, didn't like the same tracks.

"Words I Never Said" is definitely one of the best mainstream rap singles of the year. He was definitely spoon fed this beat with a pre-recorded chorus by his label to make some pop (judging by the hook, it could have been about not telling some woman how you really felt or whatever bullshit they were hoping for) and Lupe completely turned it around on them.

The intro is enjoyable. The two tracks that leaked a year earlier and were thrown on as bonuses ("Im Beaming", "Shining Down") are cool, I like "All Black Everything" and "The Show Goes On". Everything else is skipped immediately.

"I Don't Wanna Care Right Now", "Til I Get There" and the Trey Songz tracks are especially horrible.

I'd give the album a 2 to 2.5 out of 5. Definite, yet expected, disappointment.

I bought it finally after much hesitation from The Cool and from Lupe saying himself he didn't like the LASERS album because it was forced from the company. The Cool had some good tracks but was a little dark for me overall.

But he built enough goodwill from Food and Liquor to give him another shot.
