"Was J. Dilla a "Good MC" to you....Honest"

Was J. Dilla a "Good MC" to you....Honest

We know that Dilla is one of the best beat makers in the history of rap. That is not what this post is about.

The question is.... Do you feel Dilla was a good mc? I liked him on a few joints and thought he was solid. Not sure if he could carry an entire LP but he was pretty good.

thoughts....Do you think he would have transitioned into what say...Q-tip or Kanye did..

peace...

if rap was all about lyrics, it would be spoken word. The way they were rappin on that album was all about feel, delivery, syllables and personality. its so many moments on that record that record that are fun and memorable even if and maybe even BECAUSE OF the fact i dont give a fuck what the words in particular are. for example near the beginning of untitled/fantastic when t3 says some shit like "see im a show you all how to emcee, see ockarocka for warachh waharee"or somethin. you listen to that shit and tell me it dont sound dope.

lets face it there is a limited amount of both rhymes and subject matters for rappers to use and in my opinion the only way for the genre which hasnt evolved much in the last decade to move forward is to focus on the use of human voicebox in ways that compliment the music without being overly concerned with context.

if it was all about lyrics and elzhi type complicated patterns and shit no one would give a fuck about someone like ODB. and yet hes one of the most memorable and beloved rappers of all time.

but its harder to find the dope acts from other countries. Plus in my opinion, English is the best language for rapping due to the syllables used, the general sound and the abundance of rhyming words.
Japanese might be second for me... i remember hearing the interlude on buhloone mindstate http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-r774KpYtso and thinkin man i gotta check out more japanese rap.

these guys had some good tracks:

/\ cosign all this, when SV started they were on some OTHER SH*T and it was so dope it was all about the feel, and that along with the production makes that album classic to me, they were so innovative ..them n*ggas were Based before lil b lol. I feel Elzhi, while still dope, was the complete opposite as T3 Baatin and Dilla didnt care what they said Elzhi cared 100% to construct a perfect verse..

and yeah i think Dilla was a good MC, the best out of the original SV members, but i can't really see him doing a Q Tip or Kanye, but who knows..

Elzhi came on the Trinity album right?

Detroit Deli was hot front to back beat-wise.
The self-titled joint was hot front to back beat-wise.

Ain't like the music got wack after he arrived. As a matter of fact, Trinity might be the weakest spot in their catalog with the exception of the lastest joint that felt disjointed.

As far as rapping in the pocket and keeping a good flow and cadence. He knew exactly how to rap with the beat. In fact on some of those SV songs he goes hard as fuck. Jealousy? Thelonius? Give This Nigga?

What he mainly gets criticized for is his content. It's very predictable and downright trite at times. He liked rapping about things he enjoys and never sought to spread a message nor inform listeners politically or educationally. He liked rapping about bitches, guns, weed, strip bars, jewelry and trucks. That about wraps it up. But he didn't care, he had fun doing it. In fact there are many moments in his career where I find myself revisiting for his verses.

In the early days, he and his SV pals would freestyle half of the time, which isn't a good look because freestyles are inherently worse than written raps. But they freestyled with a unique flavor that strangely had you coming back for more. The chanting on the Fantastic 2,3,4 interludes are catchy and groovy. The singing on Estimate is beautiful. Their hooks on Beej en Dem and Forth n Back almost force you to rap along with them.

Dilla wasn't a top 25 rapper by any means. But if he wanted to be a good rapper, he very well could have been.

No dobut about it!! I'm in 100% agreement with everything you've stated!! He was one of the best Producers/Musicians on the Mic,in my opinion! You know,I used to feel conflicted sometimes with his lyrical content, because it seemed in direct contrast with the genius of his music, but his delivery, emphasis on words, word play and overall timing just kept winning me over every time,no matter what he was talkin about!! lol!! I just chalked it up to the fact that that is what made him so unique and not like any other doing it,or even doing it now! Thanks!

>You know,I used to feel conflicted
>sometimes with his lyrical content, because it seemed in direct
>contrast with the genius of his music

You know I thought about this and it's funny that to most Dilla fans it's become an unspoken truth that there's a profound irony in how artistic and progressive his beats/production/music were and how tasteless and misogynistic his lyrics were. It almost frustrates "hip hop heads" because they want something of a complete package like say El-P, MF Doom or Kanye West. But if you really step back and think about how Dilla was that way, it starts to make perfect sense.

Dilla was not someone that took himself too seriously on the mic. He was a Detroit muthafucka just like anyone else growing up in that time and place. But he was born with the gift of musical genius's ear. And to him music was just a crazed obsession that he loved and was very competitive about. It became so unhealthy that he lost sleep and wouldn't eat because he was so drowned in his records, furiously trying to outdo his peers such as Pete Rock, Madlib, DJ Spinna etc. It would keep him up late at night at the mere thought of someone else practicing while he wasn't. He even skipped touring with SV because of the fear that it would take time away from him practicing and becoming the best at his craft. Any time he ever got a call from Pete Rock or Diamond D, that would just fuel that burning desire for him to be the best, almost like a Jordan type of mindset for making beats. He loved music and had so much fun making it.

And therein lies our answer: Dilla's passion for music was the joy of it all. It wasn't about spreading a message. It certainly wasn't about being tame or sensible to who may be listening. It was about expressing things that matter to him through every phase of his life. In his early twenties, what was important to him? Just about the same things as any other post-adolescent that just got his first taste of success: nice cars and sexy women. As he aged, his maturity developed and quickly became more conscious and aware of mortality and the importance of love. It's fitting that his career began with phrase "What love got to do with it? Ask SV it's all bullshit" to the polar opposite of the deeply, love-rooted tones found on his Motown beat tape, Donuts and The Shining. He was always honest on the mic about who he wanted to be and never gave a care about what his critics thought he SHOULD rap about. His rapping was from the heart, whether it sat well with you or not.

out responses

he was good but IMO a lot of it was in contrast to his surrounding talent in SV

it made him sound much better than he was

then with his quick ascension to the upper echoleon of producers rathar quickly we got familier w/ him and his style accepted it

thats why I cant go above saying he was "decent"

yes he rhymed on beat, in the pocket, and had a personality but there are a plethora of other mc's who fit that bill and we callthem just what they are "decent"

he wasn't special on the mic by any means

And even w/ joints like Slumv's "Reunion", where the lyric-potency had been upped w/ the addition of Elzhi and an improved T3, Dilla had the most memorable verse on there.

So yea Dilla 'wasn't really a good MC' and before Dirty Slums his brother was TERRIBLE.

Now, that his brother has worked on his craft somewhat he is on the level his brother was before he died. Now could Dilla have been better, sure but he didn't get the chance when his brother now has one.

Right now I look at Illa the same way I looked at T-3 who is also improving little by little. The same way all 3 original members improved their rhyme styles with every album that dropped going back to Fantastic vol 1.

People on here think T-Baby is a dope mc.

Dilla wasn't bad, but he wasn't good either. He's one of those rappers that's just good to have on in the background without really paying attention to them.

It really does seem like a lot of rappers get a pass on here just because they're from Detroit though. I believe you're in Detroit, so I can understand cheering for the home team and all that shit, so I'm cool with you giving it up to everybody. It's like how people from New York give wack music a pass because it's local.

But I've seen guys on here claim that Baatin (RIP) was dope. He had a few cool moments, but overall, he sucked at rapping.

Black Milk? Good (not great) producer with a fairly original sound, awful rapper though.
Guilty? I like his voice. Everything else? Terrible.
Trick Trick? There were people legitimately saying that this dude was dope. Unbelievable.
Elzhi. The most overrated rapper on OKP.
Royce. The second most overrated rapper on OKP.

Don't get me wrong, I love a lot of Detroit rap. Danny Brown (though I feel he's a bit overrated on here too), Obie Trice, Invincible, Buff1, One.Be.Lo etc (a couple of these might be from somewhere else in Michigan, hopefully you get the idea though).

I still ride for Em as probably the most technically gifted rapper ever, even if his music sucks nowadays.

Aint nobody fuckin with this rhyme style

Royce Da 5'9" has been known for his rhyme structure - often two or more of his lines will rhyme exactly start to finish. He has also been known to move from one set of rhymes to another, then coming back to the first set later on in the verse. Complex phrasing is another aspect of his style, which looks to avoid delivering lines in simple or common terms.

C+?

That's that kind of disrespect that dudes like Large Pro get. J Dilla was at worst a B+ rapper. And I don't want to hear about how a lot of these non-producing rappers were better rappers than dudes like Large Pro, J Dilla, Diamond D, and the like. Good music is good music. Rappers are by definition dependent, and rarely rap outside of a standardized format. Give me someone who knows how to make good music 10 times out of 10.

I mean.. both of Large and Diamond have numerous CLASSIC performances on the mic.. J Dilla is a C+, to me and thats not a dis to him.. He sounded dope on most of the stuff he rhymed on, but it wasn't anything with a lot of substance.. No front door/snake eyes/live@thebbq/bestkeptsecret/sally/wentformine

Again.. i love Jay Dee and some Slum Village.. but still C+ is a reasonable grade for Dilla's rhymes...

Simple as that.

One of the more fun parts of Rap is HOW you say some shit more so than what you're saying. Think about it - Busta wins because of the amount of personality and style he puts into his shit. It's the same with Dilla for me. Shit like how he rode the hi-hats on "McNasty Filth". Now THAT was brilliant.

i c what you're saying...to a degree. But if emceeing was ALL about how cats rode a beat then what's the point. Why not just style the fuck out of some jazz scatting type of flow? I'm torn because i do indeed get where you're coming from, especially as a fan of Starang, but even with someone like him where a lot of his appeal is HOW dope he says his lines, there still has to be a modicum of content. i don't want this to turn into a tired ass 'swag vs. lyricism' debate but how can u call someone brilliant when they don't have any quotables?

For me, it ain't all about quotables. It's about total package.

he uses his voice and cadence like its percussion.

as far as subject matter, he's on his fly shit, laid back old school style that
many rappers try to pull off but can't. IN a way he didn't really have anything
to lose spittin, so there's something very natural about it. I love it best when
its Dilla rhyming over his own shit. Or Madlibs.

That cat was ONE with the track...like he was born on the motherfucker. Cats underestimate the importance of flow these days just to hear themselves talk, and it annoys the piss out of me.

Dilla gave a fuck about HOW he said shit - even though what he was saying wasn't lyrically deep.

His metaphors made me laugh more than anything.

"It's 3 like the stripes on Ah-dee-das..."

"Numbers look crooked like King Kong shook it..."

>IN a way he didn't really have anything to lose spittin, so there's something very natural about it.

People ALWAYS expect the producer to be the shittiest rapper.

He was in-pocket flow wise, immaculate timing all the time, and actually really dope with how he put what syllables he said on the beat. It's like he was another instrument when he rapped.

Subject matter/Content wasn't his thing, but technical skill he was dope...

gruntin and hollerin over the JBs sound. Some of it is great soulful singing. Some of it is just gutbucket gibberish that just...fits. That's Dilla over his own shit. Some of it is clever. But some of it would sound absolutely retarded coming from another artist over other music.

J-Dilla wasn't on the level of an emcee but he had essence to his rhymes just on flow & voice, he knew how to spit even if it was simple subjects of girls, money, jewelery, & cars, he knew how to deliver it correctly to the point you was feeling what he had to say.

What I liked about him was also that he could spit over anybody else's beat not just his own the same way he would over his own and own it; that's what a rapper suppose to do.

You're citing things like 'standom.' Perhaps you should learn about "rapping and hip hop music" before calling someone out. Dudes like J.Cole are cited as great rappers these days. The kind of style that Dilla had in his rhyming is the kind of style that dudes don't (can't?) develop or maintain these days because ain't no one calling them out for being wack.

It was his style. That's what used to be important--for rappers to have their own style.

I don't think about rap music like that. Making a good record is a lot harder than writing a single verse. And frankly, just because some emcees do a lot of guest verses or develop their identity by appearing on other people's tracks doesn't make them better, nor is that even approaching being an effective gauge of whether or not someone is good. That's your standard of how good someone is as an emcee? Whether or not some rappity ass rap dude wants to get someone on a track?

>I like
>Dilla as an ARTIST too but this is the equivalent of one of
>you homies asking your opinion on some weak ass titties and
>you keep bringing ass up in the conversation to compensate for
>it because you like that broad and have some kind of shit
>emotionally invested in her.

So you're equating J Dilla's rapping to some weak ass titties on a girl that you're in love with? hahahahahahahah I gotta hand it to you, that's a pretty funny metaphor. I'm just picturing a group of guys sitting around judging a pair of "weak ass titties." Awesome.

No one is going off topic, dude.

The question asked was can the dude rap?

The dude can rap!

Jokers frontin' need to cut it out!

HE COULD SPIT!

these verses aint ho hum average or even close to wack....

"Act Like You Know" (PPP ge-ology remix)
"Fuck The Police"
"Raise It Up"
"The Clapper"
"Shake It Down"
"Wild"
"Thelonious"
"Reunion"
"Won't do"
"Make 'em Envy"
"No Games"
"That Shit"

Maaaaaan....that's just off top...

Nobody in here saying dude GOAT MC or nothing like that...clearly, dude was a better beat maker than rapper.....

BUT his rappin' was on point AND he had his own style to boot.

People frontin' like dude was garbage....or just "okay" like he wasn't at all memorable(?!?!), are buggin'!

That's no stan talk....

That's just real talk.

Rap is voice, flow, swag, content and cadence.

He had all those.

Dude had supreme beats with quality rhymes.

We see through all that boo boo like it's ghost shit... (c) Quelle Chris

...when it came to the flows, style, and putting words together in a way that makes the rhyme sound fresh, dilla had it locked. pretty much every verse i've ever heard from dude, i've liked. sometimes he snaps, sometimes he's cooling with it, but either way i dig his rapping.

how many here would think that was a dope line if waka flocka spit it?
a lot of the benefit of the doubt is being given because ppl like him
that's understandable, but objectively? nah

What is an "intelligent quotable"?

Give me an example of one of those from, say, Jay-Z.

Not saying the beats that waka spit on are wack, but if dilla spit that SAME shit on those beats, then you can be blissful in your ignorance

He's a dope "in the pocket" MC the same as he's a dope "in the pocket" beat maker. Honestly, his shit can and should be studied because he's exceptional in that department.

Yeah but for anyone on this site to say Dilla as an MC should be studies is just plan silly when there are 50 MC's better than him...As a Producer...he should be studied. As an MC, he was good...nothing special..

I've done some decent threads on here and if its not an "in crowd" thread, people overlook. I ask one simple question about Dilla as more of a random thought........and people have came on here and said Dilla is a Great MC...lol..Rakim is a GREAT MC...there is a different...lol...okayplayer ..
