I take r'n'b sung choruses in my hip-hop on a case by case basis. In general I tend to dislike them or find them unneccesary, but it worked fine for "Royalty".

I don't like the beat anymore because its just a loop. ALC didn't FLIP IT ENOUGH!

and its like that

couldn't have said it better myself

Never gave Jodeci on the hook a second thought. It was meant to be the single for the record and I thought Primo and Guru did a great job of making their sound accessible. Jodeci was large at that time. If anything its more of Gangstarr giving street cred to Jodeci, than Jodeci wussing up a Gangstarr joint. That joint knocks.

Its funny some of the posts about things I never gave a second thought. I think one was about sequencing an album that I thought was a classic. No need to over think things.

That track gets em moving everytime

Yep, loved the beats, loved the lyrics, even loved Primo's scratching on the chorus. But Jodeci? Um, I was a little perplexed. At the time, it felt like Gang Starr was "giving in" to what was the popular trend at the time, and they were some of the last hold-outs of artists from the golden era who weren't using R&B singers on the hooks. It seemed like a "Fuck it, we want to sell some records" kind of move, which made it odd since it was the single that followed "You Know My Steez," which was not commercial at all.

These days, I'm cool with the singing. As singing on hip-hop tracks go, it's one of the better examples. But it doesn't feel "necessary" to the track, and it doesn't really add anything to it either. I mean, it would have been fine if Primo filled up the space with more scratches. But whatever, in the end, the track is dope.

exactly exactly, we're here >< dude, especially as YKMS is one of those pure rip off your head and piss down your neck pure hip hop moments. Every time that video came on i just had to stop what i was doing and listen (same type of reaction when I heard Nas is like, i became one with hip hop lol)

the singing style they use was perfect for a GangStarr track because it's gritty
and also I was tripping off how the hell Primo chopped that beat and slowed down the tempo with the chops....and used THAT to speed it up

It sounded like "Gang Starr" still, and Guru had been on songs w/singing on it before, so it wasn't -that- jarring.

"Discipline" was the shit, same formula.

They were having a really great time in the video and it was a breath of fresh air from Puffy and Master P domination at the time. It also had somewhat of a mainstream appeal with k-ci and jojo so it could compete, while maintaining its hip hop integrity and not sounding forced at all. I loved it.

Royalty was the first time as a group GS had used R&B vocalists for a hook, to me, it seemed out of place

it just wasnt that well recieved as far as i remember, i think peeps got a little concerned that maybe the Gangstarr sound could end up watered down, it didnt obviously but it just seemed like a bit of a strange collab, to me anyways

>

on suspended in time ? interestingly no, but thats a different kind of vocal, a bit more subtle

..so i wasnt really concerned that they would have a bunch of R&B hooks ...really tho, Preem cuts up Greg Nice vocals on Royalty as well, so its not like they passed up scratches for a sung vocal like they did on the Suspended in time remix

>Royalty as well, so its not like they passed up scratches for

i wasnt a Jodeci fan so it just seemed out of place to me on the album, the vocal on suspended in time, like i already said, was more subtle alot less in your face. i wasnt a massively into r&b in that period of time so didnt really like hearing it on my hip hop records, it felt like GS were "giving in". Again, i've said many times in this post it eventually wore me down, but initially i wasnt feeling it, the hook that is, always ALWAYS loved the beat

is that BDP had a song with the same sample (and a similar beat/arrangement) on EDUTAINMENT

I had been used to hearing "similar" beats by that time, but those beats were damn near the same "idea" as well as being the same sample

Thinking back on hearing it for the first time.
I had no problem with it.
K-Ci and Jojo were accepted.
The beat was dope.
The singing was dope.
And the rhymes? Fucking nice.
Other OKP-NYers can verify this, but NYC looked like how this song sounded in 1998.

I liked Jodeci but "Toss It Up" and "How Do You Want It" were lame as hell. Jodeci doesn't have the best track record for guesting on rappers' songs.

But they brought it on "Royalty." The hook was perfect for the song.

It was still a dope Gang Starr song but with a little flavor of K-Ci & Jojo singing but if you take them out of the song, it's still a dope song.

Plus at that time it was pretty normal to hear a underground rap act do a bit of a crossover song but still have an hard edge to it.

That song on Warriorz had me scratching my head when I first heard it. Loved the beat, and even the first part of the chorus was acceptable....but then.....

"EVERYDAY WE KEEP IT GANGSTA! LIVING THUG LIFE! SO WHAT CHALL MOTHERFUCKERS WANNA DO?!"

Gross. Of course MOP went on to do an unforgivable collab with LFO, but that "Everyday" song has never sat well with me.

that chorus was horrendous, but I kept listening because of the beat.

"What I Wanna B" was a little better than that.
and I actually liked it better on the album, sans the scratches Premier later added.

You're right. Music theory-wise, the reason for this is because the sample is minor. (for you musicians out there, the "piano" is playing m7th 1 m3rd 4th m7th 1 4th 5th) When K-Ci and Jo-Jo sing, they're singing in major. It's weird. I have no clue why they sang the hook in major but the beat was minor.

It's like Premier wanted to make sure that the beat was super hard & had that bounce unlike most artists who would've went the opposite route and made some watered down soft drums & with a popular r&b-ish sample.

I had a car at the time and that was one of those inspirational songs for me. I used to sing that chorus LOUD on the highway.

Dude sings with soul on the hook too. He's gotta really push his voice to keep up with the heavily compressed beat. More of those kinda rnb singers should try that. Sing LOUDER. It works.

K-Ci has a real soulful scratchy voice that lends well to yelling. Some singers seem to sound flatter the more they push their voice.

anyways i liked everything about this song. the beat + the chorus and especially the well placed simple scratches.

I was confident that K-Ci/JoJo wouldn't screw the pooch on their part and they didn't. And that beat...oh wow! With the reference too!? C'mon..automatic jammin. And Elam wrecked too. To this day its easily one of my favorite Gangstarr songs.

And another thing: Its one thing to have singing on a hook like this song. Its K-Ci/JoJo going in vocally like they were good for doing back then. They stayed on topic, which was a great one (we're royalty..now let's act like it). Its another thing to have 'singing for the bitches' on a hiphop song (ie: that Mobb Deep song that everyone went batshit about with...ummm....112). Now, THAT was a situation that deserved some eyebrows and commentary.

It's not one of my favourite Gangstarr records but that wasn't to do with the fact it had an RnB hook, I just didn't like it for whatever reason.

I was skeptical because K-Ci & Jojo were on the hook, but I knew Premo wouldn't dilute the Gang Starr sound for some pop/r&b jingle.

Once I heard it, it was a wrap. The drums and snares are incredible on that song.

I remember thinking, 'If all radio rap was this good, I'd listen to the radio.'

I seem to recall reading a pre-album interview with Guru where he said that they did a song aimed at the radio with K-Ci and Jojo and I was really upset until I actually heard it. I have always hated Jodeci something fierce, so I went in wanting to hate it.

I mean, the beat on that song, in retrospect, is just damn near perfection. It could've been Guru just saying 'This is our radio song' over and over again and it still would've been decent.

But yeah, good song. Liked it back then. Like it now.

i know the beat was just too heavy not to love but at 26 i still had a little snobbery of my youth hanging around and seeing/ hearing KCI and JoJo on a GS track just felt odd, not like they were selling out but giving in a little......i got over it eventually :)

Also loved Jazzmatazz schitt, like Chaka Khan singing on "Watch What You Say". Prod by Premier with her on the hook. It's basically Gang Starr to me, so I was ready.

I think anyone who lived through 1996 and 1997 would have been ready for a hook like "Royalty"?

I thought K-Ci added a lot to the song. Better than most hip-hop / R&B collabs.

You're such pests...now, what is it you want? In your depths of your ignorance, what is it you want? Well, whatever it is you want, I can't deliver because I just don't see it. - Orson Welles
