"What is old peoples music?"

Inspired by a convo I had about Freddie Jackson
And Claw's hip hop/r&b post

Conversation went like this..dude told me he never listened to Freddie or anyone else like him because it was old people's music.
Which led me to seriously look at the segregation among what we consider black music
This concept remains alive today
Jill Scott would never get play on a blazing hip hop and r&b station because according to my friend she's for old people

So my fellow okp's what the what is old peoples music
And is it right to categorize it as such?

Like, I knew in 1988 that Freddie Jackson was old folks music.

I loved the hell out of his shit, though... partially *because* it was old folks music and I was at that (st)age when you're trying to be more mature than your peers.

The opening scat was straight up brilliant... even though it's sound is most definitely Kashif it stayed in a pocket George was comfortable with. I think it might be one of my top 10 tracks of the 80s really. I wish they had worked together more.

I am not sure whether or not D is "old people's music" as such.

But then again, seeing as he hasn't done anything in a decade and last time he did, he was still young, perhaps it's a moot question.

Even as the practitioners of the music become old people, punk itself stays young.

Which is why reunions of 1970s punk bands are usually embarrassing and painful to watch.

Hell... I'm not even convinced that it is now. It's not YOUNG people's music, sure... but it's not OLD people's music either ie the kids might not be into it, but if you introduce it to them, they could easily find something in there to relate to

While not the fashion in 86, pfunk was associated with your cool uncle or older brother who smoked weed.

saw her onstage on some show trying to grind on Timberlake with her old/Linda-Hamilton-on-steroids-in-S-&-M-gear look & he seemed more repulsed than Aguilera when Jagger was crowding her space in that last Stones concert flick.

Madonna's earlier incarnations/reinventions & flirtations with techno/etc seemed natural but that Hard Candy shit looked/sounded forced which is probably why it barely went gold in the US.

By the time she'd gotten around to it, she was trailing Britney & even Chris Cornell in trying to hop on that Tunes/Timbo train (even those cats weren't really hot anymore by 2008 which made it seem that much worse for a woman who once was up on trends at a relatively early stage).

I couldn't tell you what one song from that album sounded like at this point, I just felt the collective eyeroll from 'youth culture' in the air with that one.

maybe old people's music, at least for this conversation, is what used the (presumably failed) term of 'grown & sexy' in reference to its target demographic.

(Not sure 'grown & sexy' was ever really a marketing term... I only ever saw it around here, but then again I don't read much about contemporary music elsewhere.)

I can express how depressing it was for me when I'd be on my lunch break downtown and some dude would pick me out of a crowd and give me a flyer for a G&S event.

Basically, if you were black and wearing slacks/your belt higher than your asscrack, you were likely to be a victim of this profiling

grown and sexy just makes me think of motherfuckers that are too old to be acting a fool in public.

yeah... that's the problem with it; it felt sort of contradictory. It was not "grown & sexy" so much as "old & trying to still be sexy... with pathetic results"

Which is why it was hurtful to me when someone assumed that was where I belonged. Because in my mind, I was still genuinely sexy... Miss me with that Riunite & Cialis shit

If the music sounds like it comes from a world in which Daft Punk existed previously, it is not old peoples music.

If the music predates or doesn't acknowledge Daft Punk, it's old peoples music.

I like Daft Punk. I like old peoples music. I don't think Dub Step is music. I am old. Get off of my lawn.

There is a serious point in there though. European dance music has become the primary influence on popular music, and is a huge influence on much of the new music that doesn't aspire to be popular.

I work with a kid in his early 20s, he plays guitar, and is into the Rock side of what we'll call old peoples music here. We both lament the lack of what he and I call "cool guitar music" anymore. All the current bands we like have been at it since the late '90s. He wants to start a rock and roll band to fill the void that we see, but all the people his age that create music do it with a computer. They see a video of Townes Van Zandt fingerpicking and they're in awe. He's got 10-15 longtime friends who fancy themselves as musicians (many actually play in bands that gig in cities w/ fertile music scenes) and he can't fill out a rhythm section, but he has plenty of people willing to "do some beats" for him.

I know I'm old, but I'm amazed that the kids today that are into the weird, forward thinking music are listening to dubstep. What the fuck is wrong with kids these days?

anything that isn't "new" is old people's music...

I will say that when they were at their most popular, they were sampling a whole lot of old folks music.

when it was released, it was targeted to, popular with, and largely consumed by young people. old people wanted no part of it.

rap music shouldn't even be in this discussion IMO.

they don't make rap music for "old people" for the most part.

because I fail to hear Wu-Tang in its heyday, making rap music for "old people". with all that cussin' and general "young person" stuff being talked about.

are we talking about Wu-Tang in 2011? even then I don't really think rap music is ever made for "old people". rap as a music is too youth-oriented. even when the artists are old. they specifically avoid certain topics.

I thought this post was about something else. That Wu-tang (and other old 90's Hip-Hop acts) *today* mainly appeal to an older crowd who don't want to hear the techno-stuff doesn't change the fact that they in their heyday was about as far from old folks music as it gets. I mean, in the context of the music discussed in this thread, you could then say that if Bobby Brown or BBD put out a new record, that would appeal to older guys nostalgic about New Jack Swing or whatever when it has already been stated here that NJS was NOT old folk music. I mean, I could say that a brutal death metal veteran band like Suffocation make old folk music because nowadays, their fanbase is mainly guys in their 30's. However, calling brutal death metal "old folk music" just seem retarded to me and I feel the same way about Hip-Hop.

Whatever...

"Rockit" was made by a 43 year old Herbie Hancock (granted, he looked to be about 33 back then but still) but it wasn't "old people's music" then and with the '80s revivalism of the decade past and its use in commercials, etc. it still isn't

at the time, there was a weird song that Leon Sylvers III produced for the Staples Singers that AFKAP made a hilarious comment about. at the time, probably not old people's music, despite how awkward Pops Staples seemed on the Soul Train stage -- the sound was more in line with younger listeners of the time.

I think the tag is often ascribed to music that is "boring" to (the majority of) young people. music that often reflects the maturation of an artist in the physical sense, or is largely consumed by older listeners.

largely inoffensive music where the entry level to being entertained isn't too high.

yacht rock, which I adore, is largely a kind of "old folks" music. it was the music for people who had graduated from weekend binges to their 5th or 6th year of 9 to 5 living

what the Commodores were doing on the flipside of songs like "Midnight Magic" was in that vein.

because as much as it exudes the vibe that you (very cleverly) described, on some level it was still music for a certain kind of young person

but then again, a lot of the aesthetic by the mid- to late-70s was leaning towards "old"... when you look at pics of (mostly white) people back then, it's hard to believe that they are in their 20s with their Fu Manchu mustaches and three-piece suits.

which is why MTV came out in 81 and spotlighted a lot of the Brit bands who were flossing a really youthful aesthetic, American rock immediately seemed old and flabby in contrast.

when Michael McDonald (patron saint of the subgenre) first recorded songs for the Doobies, he was 24 -- one of the younger artists doing that style of music.

Definitely. I wonder what influenced the younger Americans of the day to take the look mentioned above.

it's painful.

it started w/Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic, i think. that album ain't all old folks, but it's got hints. maybe i'm too early.

Musicology was full of it. maybe that was the start.

yeah. i think it was. that album is totally 'safe'. by Prince standards, at least. even The Rainbow Children had enough edge to keep it from being all old folks.

My mama used to LOVE that song. She was a Freddie Jackson fan too lol. But yeah, it's basically music that sounds tailor-made for the lounge set and/or for adults/parents to clean the house to. Or nowadays, for grown folks to get their groove on to at a Tom Joyner or Michael Baisden sponsored function/cruise. See, Kem discography.

was a big hit at my school and was in fact my favorite song for like a year. And I loved that whole cassette, man...

(Didn't love his next album as much, but "I'll Prove It To You" was my song too)

I can't call it... I have no idea why in 86-88 that "old" aesthetic was so popular.... Greg Abbott... Freddie Jackson... Jeffrey Osborne... James D-Train Williams when he started doing records like this: http://youtu.be/1_tP9y2IUdA

At first I thought it was just an issue of where I grew up, but nah... watching that Freddie Unsung last night, I found myself asking how it was possible that he had 10 #1 hits in the US. Why? What the hell was going on? He's there on Soul Train and everybody's looking as excited as if Cameo is playing.

It's something I can't make sense of retroactively.

lol @ that "D-Train" song too. that is weird to hear him singing over a track like that. I'm gonna guess it was the 808. Kind of reminds me of what Loose Ends did back in the day, but w/less edge.

In response to Reply # 68

I mean, in addition to Luther, Freddie, and those types you still had Aretha, Gladys, Chaka, and older acts charting on the R&B side. It wasn't just NE and Stacy Lattisaw, right? O'Bryan? lol I'm seriously drawing a blank. Does Whitney even count?

Saying you were into Cameo was instant credibility.

Funny thing about it, though... While I remember them ruling over that era like gods with hit-single-packed albums on a Thriller-esque level, I looked it up this morning and they didn't have a lot of honest-to-goodness hits.

We talked about this a while back... but there was a real disconnect between the charts and the streets back then. I used to read billboard a lot back in the day so i had some idea what was charting where... but it wasn't until I got online and was able to look up where certain songs peaked that I realized just how big that disconnect was. It shocked me to learn a ton of cuts we'd hear in every park and house party were minor hits at best.

because I felt like they really captured what was really "hot" on the top singles and albums sections.

I remember I used to check for tapes for many years off what was listed there.

Midnight Star, etc. making party joints that young people adored. With how ageist the industry is now it's hard to believe that many of the most popular (and successful) acts of that time were hold overs from the 70's; hell even the 60's in some cases.

In 85 when Freddie hit big The Commodores had Nightshift, Kool & the Gang hit with Fresh, Maze with Back In Stride Caravan of Love by Isley-Jasper-Isley, The Bar-Kays had Your Place or Mine, Confunkshun Electric Lady. In 86 Midnight Star hit with Midas Touch, Clinton was funkin hard with Do Fries Go with That Shake and of course Cameo had their biggest hit to date. 85-86 was kinda the last hurrah for a lot of these acts though.

Oh and I completely left out the Whispers... those cats went strong right up into the New jack era... Rock Steady was 87. EWF came back in 87 too.

though I have since understood Hi-NRG to be a related, though somewhat different, more commercial sound--stuff like Expose, Taylor Dane's "Tell It To My Heart," Suzi Q and a bunch of other European stuff.

But yeah... it was all in the same bag and I remember it being the predominant sound of the day. Even some R&B groups took stabs at it, like Atlantic Starr's "One Lover at a Time: http://youtu.be/oLZl43oLUKs

However, it may very well have been a euro-thing. I remember an article in swedish music-magazine Slitz about this latin-dance pop scene and it was refered to as "freestyle" but I can't remember if the actual artists in the text called it that-I need to check. I guess it was a british thing. (EDIT:The term, not the music of course)

As for Hi-NRG, my definition of that is pretty much the next sound of euro-dance after italo-disco. It was similar to the Stock, Aitken&Waterman stuff in terms of sound but less commercial/pop. I wouldn't call "Tell it to my heart" Hi-NRG; that was more straight up pop even if it has a Hi-NRG undertone. However, I'm checking the definition of Hi-NRG on wiki and it seems a bit different from mine; they are talking about 70's stuff and shit whereas I'm thinking more along the lines of Modern Talking, Sinitta and other 80's euro-cheese

but to be honest, besides the dance that the song inspired... something about Levert seemed "old" to me.

Like, the music itself was young but I felt like the guys were a lot older than they actually were... probably because of the deep, old-school voices. And the beards.

(obviously, for the UK)

oddly, I don't remember "Rocket 2 U" being all that big in my hood... but "Make It Real" was HUGE for years

i must have missed it... and I can't say I'm sorry either.

While I loved many of the Whispers songs (I think the second cassette I ever owned was their Headlights album), looking at them was always a bit weird for me. Was too much like watching my dad trying to get funky.

Must have been 93 or so... Now I'm a fan but I really wasn't going to see them but rather Michael Cooper who was opening. She sat though Coop's set, which she did seem to enjoy... but man when the Whispers got up there she was on her feet damn near the whole show. Thing is she wasn't really even a fan... her day was more 60s. But she was a huge Temps fan and seeing dudes up there in carney yellow suites doing those routines just struck a cord with her.

The Whispers were always kinda odd in that they looked and acted 2 generations removed but were laying down tracks that fit right in with the sound of the day. I'm not sure we'll ever see anything like them again in our lifetime.

These old-ass dudes singing over the most cutting-edge Leon Sylvers production... I wonder what convinced Dick Griffey to sign them in the first place, and why their success didn't encourage more old-school doo-woppers to try to sing for the kids in that way.

And what's more, they kept it going for a LONG time too... well into the 1990s, they were still doing it. (I mean, I'm sure they're still doing it now... but I remember them being a marquee act as late as 1996 or so)

Somebody here made a point about Aretha always sounding like an "old woman", even in her debut live recording from the mid 50s when she was a teenager.

I have NEVER thought of that through all my years of listening to Auntie Ree, now, I can't listen to Aretha without thinking of that post.

both Eddie and Gerald qualify... though Gerald made a whole lot of "young folks" music

Johnny Gill pre-New Edition made music defying his looks and age because of how he sounded as a singer.

even at 17 he sounded like he was much older.

but the funny thing is ... unlike Bobby, Eddie, and Gerald... he does not TALK like anything approaching his singing voice.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

I was about to mention Chaka.
Because if she's allowed to sing "big" and paired with the wrong song... she can fall into the "Old People's Music" trap

her Rufus era, that voice didn't seem like it belonged to someone as tiny as she was. Luckily, the music was well out of the "old folks" column for most of her career.

I saw her in the "Through The Fire" video the other day, and @ 31 she looked real young to me still. Especially with that "punk-cute" look she was rockin' back then

I'm not going to get into how I know this... but when you spend less than 30 minutes at various locations over a period of a few years and hear the same song in every single one of the venues you know they wearing that shit out. I can't hear that song today without thinking of fat unattractive white people trying to pick up on each other.

somebody (with money) heard that pitch,

a director carried out this vision.
somebody edited the final product.

at some point before this video was released,
a bunch of people sat in a room, and decided
that THIS collection of images
would encourage a consumer to buy an aretha franklin album.

what the hell was going on in the 80s?

I think folks were doing the Bruce Springsteen/Clarence Clemons thing to an overkill. The 80s was the decade that transformed the sax from a hip to a VERY lame instrument. I'm still waiting for its hip revival.

the temptations movie i think...

and when i got to disc two, this song came on.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPUsQDm-HQY

i was like... that was the temptations?
i didn't even know. lol

but it most certainly qualifies as bid whist music.

>Inspired by a convo I had about Freddie Jackson
>And Claw's hip hop/r&b post
>
>Conversation went like this..dude told me he never listened to
>Freddie or anyone else like him because it was old people's
>music.
>Which led me to seriously look at the segregation among what
>we consider black music
>This concept remains alive today
>Jill Scott would never get play on a blazing hip hop and r&b
>station because according to my friend she's for old people
>
>So my fellow okp's what the what is old peoples music
>And is it right to categorize it as such?

Visually, this is like the definition Bid Whist, but I have mixed feelings about whether or not the song itself is...

Like, when I first heard it I was so young that it sounded WAY "grown"... but not in a tepid, funkless way.

But you included the Whispers in this so I figured we were going beyond sound in some cases.

for some reason I kept thinking 82... it just don't sound like what was poppin' in 84 at all. I mean you had the Minneapolis sound in full effect and this shit just don't fit. It's a jam but it was clearly "old people" music when it dropped.

I played this album till it turned to dust.

Funny thing is that she came out at the same time, same label as Mariah and they were kinda viewed as competition for each other. But Mariah just had a more commercial look... and once she married the label boss, that was it for Regina's career.

reminds me of card games being played in cigarette smoke filled living rooms and the smell of dark liquor..

also it's interesting that a lot of the specific songs people are mentioning are records that established, successful artists made later in their careers.... It's almost as if to make old people's music you have to have gained some status rising up through your career...I mean you didn't come on the scene initally making old people's music..

it's like the spot has to be earned...

not sure if a lot of current mainstream artists will get to the status where years from now people will look at them and say they make old people's music.

But you have to consider the times Freddie and those folks came out
I liked Freddie,Anita and the likes but so did my parents
The segregation thing didn't happen yet
Which is why when njs came along
It was like a breath of fresh air...

But come on bro....Freddie wasn't making his music for the whodini crowd
It was for the grown ups
Anita and the likes...they weren't trying to appeal to the kids
Now we did because we were exposed to it via bet radio and our parents
And good music is good music old or new

Now back to the laughs lol

sure it had a more distinctive hip hop feel to it..but honestly the actual music that was being made was pretty much the same thing that the Gap Band and Zap and Cameo had been making...it was basiclly funky R&B with a hip hop vibe...

it was new and exciting because R&B had gone away from that style during the time when a Freddie or Whitney houston had come out. But New Jack Swing wasn't created out of nothingness..it had some new style to it with the hip hop, but I mean Guy's first album was the same type of thing the Gap band was doing...even beyond the similar sounding vocals.

right.... things weren't always segregated..music was just music. Look at the old charts and playlists from Black radio back then and you see a great deal of variety in style... I've never looked at the split or segregating as necessarily a positive thing though. Although hip hop exploded and we got some great music out of that...the impact of that on R&B pretty much ended the era of impactful legendary Black artists who had longevity and success for long periods of time....

Hip hop
That mix didn't exist as strong as it did when njs came along
Sure there was mergers of those worlds before but nothing swept the culture the way njs did it
And sure it was a hybrid but it represented something fresh to the average listener
Also It wasn't just the music, the culture at the time was a shift from what was going on before
States of mind were changing
Shit was way different

Cleveland had one station that played it all
Freddie and Anita along with epmd AND Nwa
And they had a blues and gospel hour in the morning
That if you woke up in the morning you had no choice but to dig bobby blue bland
I think Cathy Hughes and radio one messed it up for the generations that followed us
Even bet had variety
Video soul and video vibrations played it all
I don't know anything different than the various genres around me
I'm very thankful to be an old ass nigga lol

While we are making jokes about this music
Not nay one of us is saying it is awful
We know these jams and love em
It's a well known subculture among folks of our generation
Our parents especially our mothers are one of our greatest teachers in music

As soon as it was said....we knew the music lol

And I don't even mean this in a shit talking way

Every time I see Freddie Jackson mentioned I think back to the first time that record got requested. I was doing a house party for a friend of a friend... had no idea it was going to be an all Mexican party until I got there. But man these cats weren't feeling 90% of what i was playing... finally this cat came up and asked if I had any oldies. I was like naw man sorry I don't... I mean I had some back and the crib but they aren't what I usually think about grabbing when I'm stocking my crate for a gig. So finally dude asks "What about Freddie Jackson.. you know that song You Are My Laaaadeee". I played that shit and the room came alive... after that it was back to cats giving me the gas face with every record I played. I finally just unplugged.. while I was packing up someone brought out a radio and they put on the local oldies station. They was groovin their asses off as I walked out the door.

I think it's a generational thing too...Like I don't recall feeling like I was missing out on anything because there was no place that was playing music on the radio that was particularly targeted exclusively me as a young person. I mean I didn't need a station that didn't play Soul or R&B music.

There was something to be said for that variety you know....

I mean...out of the 12 inch woofers in the tricked out Hyundai I was bumping EPMD......Funkadelic......Freddie Jackson.....Sade....

when you had established sub genres and styles...and each one had it's own identity....that overall variety did not leave you wanting for much...

but maybe for someone who came up later on ...maybe it did for them...

Me..I remember buying Street Songs and ....I believe it was a Bar Kays album (I think it was the Bar Kays) on the same day at The Wherehouse...lol.

That's why I will always ride with you on your "narrowing down" argument. It's hard to deny when you've watched it happen with your own eyes. Just go find an old New York Hot Tracks and see what they play... I was checking out one of my old tapes a while back and was laughing at the idea Run-DMC, The Bar-Kays, Whitney Houston and Marvin Gaye all got played in one short set.

because right before those albums, he was making the absolute opposite of "Bid Whist" music. He was making club music and "Nuvo Soul".

then he goes right into making stepper tunes and music right off the cutting floor of a Maze studio session. Straight Bid Whist. Great, because I was glad he wasn't making ignorant music for the time being.

But then he makes "Trapped In The Closet".

For as much as I often go hard @ the low points of his discography I have to say he has a masterful grip on what Black folks of all ages want to hear.

i'm 25, my younger cousin is 22, and he treats me like i'm 50 or something because i still listen to the rap/r&b i was listening to when i was coming up, as well as the stuff from the earlier 90's/80's. like if i'm jamming ugk or big pun or something, i get the 'what the fuck is this shit?!' reaction. ...but then this kid goes on jams "sorry 4 the wait" like it's the illest mixtape ever. and mind you, there's three years difference between us; he could just as easily be listening to what i listen to. thing is, i still check for new music as voraciously as i did when i was in college or whatever, so i run the spectrum. this kid and his peoples, though...ionno...it's like if you're still jamming "blueprint", you need to hit up AARP.

so i guess if you're about my age, you're officially old to kids who are just a few years younger than you.

i don't mind, but it does make me wonder if all this 'live in the moment'-ness is warping people's concept of time itself.

I think rap music of any era is a poor fit for this conversation, about music popular with or marketed to older listeners because it is almost always targeted at younger listeners at inception.

it becomes old folks music, but rap is so much an "in the moment" type of music, I can't think of a case where a "Freddie Jackson" ever existed in the genre. Or rather, a "Whispers".

album 1 was mostly hip-hop and youth oriented music

albums 2 and 3 are much more sophisticated, but I can't really see "old folks" getting with a lot of those sounds... as much as they'd be confused by them. they appeal to a certain type of young person.

however, if they came out with something that might get burn on a Smooth Jazz station...

I remember how odd is was back in the day when you'd run into anyone under 35 that claimed to be a fan of either.

surprised it didn't come to mind sooner.
though Johnny Guitar Watson is an example of edgy "old folks" music

his voice (and image) immediately puts his music in that category

I always imagined mistermaxxx to look like JGW on the other end
cause I can hear him singing about "turkeys" and "Bucktooth Beaving Buffoons"
