* Kanye is definitely the better rapper here.
* Anybody who is gonna be on some "all they talk about is how much money they got and how much better they are than everyone" clearly didn't listen to the album or just came to hate
* What the fuck is Jay-Z thinking with some of these flows?
* The Neptunes track is probably my favorite after my first listen and the first song I went back too, however if I hadn't heard "That's My Bitch" a million times already that probably would have been my favorite.
* I liked the first Frank Ocean chorus, the second one was kinda meh.
* As expected, the Beyonce song is not enjoyable and probably the worst on the album.
* Kanye murders the first half of "Murder".
* The Swizz Beatz joint I was surprised to like. Luckily he ain't yelling over the whole thing.

Not gonna give it a star rating. Can't wait to listen to this on the ride to work tomorrow. I'm sure I'll be playing it for a while, though.

Stans gonna love it. Haters gonna hate. I really enjoyed it though.

Although I'm not sure I would go so far as to say that I "really enjoyed it". the good songs are REALLY good, but the album overall is "whatever"

man i wish "Gotta Have It" was longer that track bumps. Gotta give it a couple more listens to fully judge but there are def some good joints on this. Illest Motherfucker Alive and Primetime shoulda been on the official tracklisting but oh well. Hova and Ye are game changers regardless. Production outshines the lyrics (they both spittin real shit on New Day though), but imo this was to be expected.

- the Beyonce song doesn't bother me nearly as much as most people, it seems. I don't know if I would have placed it where they did.

- Not feeling the Neptunes joint. Pharrell has been hit and miss for me for a while now, and I've been in a state of denial a bit.

- I don't hear any track jump out at me that says "SMASH HIT!" Now, of course there will be hits on here cuz it's Jay and Ye but something the size of "Empire State of Mind" or even "Stronger" or "Love Lockdown"

- The energy of "Niggas In Paris" is jaw dropping.

- Hov's verse on "New Day" is among the best he's spit in years, but I bet no one else thinks so. I think I most like a different Jay-Z than most people.

- This truly is the star making event for Frank Ocean. I realize it's no longer cool to talk about how ill dude is, but he kills his appearances.

For a track with such a menacing beat, and a pretty aggressive flow from Jay, he kinda spit some half laid back shit. Something like "Put On"-energy would be ill.

Was somewhat expecting to be disappointed due the immense hype and me not liking HAM at all, but this is definitely one of the best releases this year.

And DAT CASSIUS SAMPLE on Why I Love You.

When we revisit this money grab routine 6 months from now u will all have all gotton your heads out of your ass.

It's really sad tho cause Kanye needs to shake Jay's dusty ass off his coattails.... This nigga jay like Shaq past his prime, just stealing money from the industry at this point.

I didn't listen that attentively, but I had to listen to that one twice. So, so far, it's aiight. Murder to Excellence was really dope and a few tracks I wasn't really feeling. I'll have to give it a more focused listen before I develop a real opinion.

No way! You gotta drop opinions like definitive ideas after a half-listen! You know you're online right? Haha..here goes...

No Chuuuch..'Rubbin the wood like Kiki Shepherd'...oh shit...

That leaked 10-minute video had me thinking Lift Off was gonna be the greatest song ever then both cats decided to not even rap on the damn thing. Its like they got caught up and Bey took the song from them..her part IS nice. 'How many niggas with me up in this biatch!?'..who sings that? Kanye..that's who. That's gonna be awesome at a show. Oh, that last 30 seconds is jamming as shit..Jay shoulda rapped over THAT part.

Niggas in Paris..harshly jamming! This is like classic Louisiana music. Its funny how much some cats flow like Master P did on his hardest stuff. What the hell is Wayne gonna do with that Carter 4 if his album's production isn't good like this?

The James Brown throughout so far..smart people involved with the music leads to good things.

I like Otis. Still.

Gotta Have It..even nicer. The whole album is worth it just for this. They KNEW this was jamming. This and Niggas in Paris...these should be the 'its about to be on' songs at the club before they play the more clubby stuff.

I want to go to sleep but shit, New Day is the best song on this thing so far and I was already pleased. 'Me and the RZA connect!' Fuckin right ya'll did. I hear this as the So Appalled replacement. Well X 3. I like RZA's involvement with Kanye's music. It should be happening. Jay is dope..niggas must be crazy.

Kanye is spazzing on this album. I hadn't listened to that's my bitch in forever. Charlie Wilson...ahhhh...its like he went from being on every Good Friday song to being damn near absent on Fantasy.

Ahhh...Swizz..nice.

WHOA @ first half of Who Gon Stop Me! Its wild that Rawse has become damn near necessary for certain songs. Him coming through on the first part of this would've been curtains after the first grunt..haha.

I gotta stop looking at the booklet. I'm jumping ahead on the lyrics..Murder to Excellence..wow..Diamonds 2. Ahh...Prodigy quotery..HNIC fo sho. Folks must be tired of JayZ's dopeness or something because I swear this cat is rapping thick and husky all over this album. He killed Murder multiple times. Nigga flowed with the sound of spraying cologne as the start-up rhyme..sickly.

I feel like Ye prolly wanted to sing all of the Frank Ocean parts. I'm happy he didn't..haha..Ocean did good work on this here. Made in America is nice too.

Why I Love You is like Power 2..Jay spazzed. Kanye knew to let it go after Jay murked another song. A lot of this sounds like Jay's Say Hello flow updated. This is a good enough time to say the music on most of this is fuckin super..like cape on, flying, carrying a random chick, S on the chest super.

So...I'm getting Pootie Pang'd on Illest Motherf**cker Alive right now..straight silence! I can't say silence is jammin! Got me opening iTunes trying to make sure things are good. @ 3 minutes here we go. If they rap over this after having it as a lude that would be too dope. They wouldn't be THAT dope, right? Awww...they should've rapped over that. Ohhh..Go Hard/Ham 2 = Illest Motherfucker Alive. Ye is Rawsing it bigtime, but its still dope.

Overall, the album sounds like:

- 1 part current/Rawse/Wayne/Khalid songs with better/more advanced music..

- 1 part the album that I'd assume folks wanted to hear..New Day (!), Otis, Gotta Have it, Primetime, That's My Bitch..

- 1 part 'epic' interludes and parts where the music sounds 'special'.

I expect for there to be a slew of hate for this when people listen to it and don't grow another ear or feel like they've heard an absolutely new set of sounds...

I'll say these things after one full skip-less listen (no repeats):

- This could have gone REALLY wrong, but the effort was clearly there and I'm happy with the result. I'm honestly surprised at how good the good stuff is. I should realize by now that Kanye is rarely going to make something that I don't end up liking/loving.

- There's a gang of dope rapping on this album from both cats..I'm happy about that. Don't let folks lie to you and tell you otherwise.

- The album got and stayed dark in spots so its not as glossy as some folks are saying. I mean that in subject matter and the fact that there's clearly 'black people' comments and moments throughout.

- New Day..wow. RZA is still the shit. Ye and Jay went the fuck in on that song. I'll be riding to work on that song for 20 minutes.

- Again..some of the production is insane, and I actually expect it to grow on me after some fly-around listens.

Soapbox (with cussing):

Its dope that this thing didn't leak. Yeah, I said it. Every wack no-music loving muthafucka with a internet connection having a cat's album 3 weeks before its supposed drop is some bullshit. Its fucks up everything when a gang of folks already DON'T APPRECIATE SHIT. It makes them worse. It makes them feel even more entitled to spend more energy hating than they did to listen to the damn music in the firs place. Hell, there's always something else to get for free, half-listen to, and casually hate on. Fuck those folks. I'm happy about almost everyone having to wait for a change. I'm happy about waking up, rolling off of the couch at 1 AM, downloading this legit and having the booklet open on one screen and this window open on the other while I listened. Me liking the album prolly helps too.

starts off nicely. didn't latch on to the verses as much as i did the beats. i like "lift off", especially at the switch-up. "otis" i haven't been bananas over since the leak. but it bookends the heart of the album with "murder to excellence". not fond of "made in america". s*** is like a less-bad "forever young". i suspect the closer will grow on me.

pretty apathetic about "illest..." and "h.a.m." though i always trip about lex luger being so young and having gotten so many high-profile placements already. "primetime" is a fun listen for the reason CMcMurtry mentioned. loved "the joy" since g.o.o.d. fridays; actually stuck it in between "runaway" and "hell of a life" on MBDTF just so i could hear it when the album was getting run on the iphone.

i know for many it's a simple thing, but i'm glad they put as much thought as they did in how the album flows and is put together.

edit: could have done without the "ooh" at the end. then again, they are probably drippin' swagu.

No Church in the Wild - tough beat. really dig it as a setup for the album
Lift Off - all over the place. sounds like it'll be way better live
Niggas In Paris - monster of a track
Otis - is Otis. we already heard it, still dope.
Gotta Have It - neptunes brought it on this song.
New Day - RZA/Ye did work on this beat. Kanye had some good lyrics on this
That's My Bitch - still dope.
Welcome to the Jungle - shock and awe, a dope Swizzy beat.
Who Gon Stop Me - another monster of a track. they didnt really do anything to the Flux Pavillion song but its all good. dig the changeup too.
Murder to Excellence - probably the best track lyrically. both of them brought it.
Made in America - nope. skip status.
Why I Love You - Best song on the album. almost perfect but for the fact that it needs another hook on the end for the album to ride out rather than the abrupt end. i could listen to it 10 times in a row.

Illest Mofo Alive - sick track
HAM - i still like it but most people dont
Primetime - why wasnt this on the album. very good track
The Joy - cool laid back track.

overall, flow wise this is the worst Jay's ever sounded imo. not sure wtf he's going for on a lot of these songs. he struggles to cope w/ the changeups. wish it had more Kanye rapping (he's better and far more interesting these days) but its good all the same.

i give it a...*thinks* 9.0/10. definitely lived up to the hype even if its different than what i was expecting.

it's be up there w/ Covert Coup, House of Balloons and R4Eva as my AOTY contenders

now all i need is for someone to leak Living So Italian.

1. It's better than BP3 but not anywhere near the quality of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

2. Their single selection for this album has been horrible. That Lift Off "song" threatened to derail the whole album.

3. Top notch production. A few misteps but Ye's ear is still clearly not to be fucked with.

4. A fairly non-vital album in both their discographies.

5. It's worst moments are like bad Coldplay.

6. Jay's fire is gone (for the most part) Jay's in that late-era U2 stage of his career as he' not longer vital or particularly interesting. Still, he's capable of doing some good work ("Murder to Excellence" and "Who Gon Stop Me"). Dude just clearly isn't trying like he used to but he impressed me a few times here.

7. It's better than I thought. I'll almost certainly will get more listens than BP3 from me.

8. Man, "Lift Off" is God awful.

9. It's a pretty fun album overall.

10. I don't agree that the fact they're mainly rapping about their great wealth

dope:
niggas in paris
murder to excellence
illest motherfucker alive
otis
joy

however, primetime is classic Jay

It's not that Jay Z is wack now. It's just that he does not belong on these tracks ...Lyrics don't fit. He is rhyming out of his element...jay comes off dope on breakbeats and samples, which is why he sounds dope on "otis" and "primetime". Those tracks are vintage hip hop.

Jay should do what WU, Rae and Ghost are doing, rhyme over vintage, rare grooves.

All in all, it's a good album

" made in america" is going to be the new uprising song for america

Random Axe is still the best hip hop album of the year....This album is up there though .

However, Jay still got it.

He's better here than BP3 or Kingdom Come but his flow is now objectively incredibly pedestrian for the most part. Still, he did some nice work on this album in some spots. Compare his rapping on the something like Hova Song (the intro to Vol. 3) to his verse on "No Church In The Wild". How do you START your album sounding that bored/boring, which is a shame as theres a few good lines in that song (some AWFUL ones too though(. Even the greats have to slow down eventually.

Jays verse on "no church" is deeper than the Hova intro...sets the tone for the whole album...do some research on the "Euthyphro Dilema" and the verse takes on a whole different meaning and you can see how kanyes verse plays off jays...RIDICULOUS!!!

it just sounds sometimes like he's trying to keep up with the times instead of setting trends and discovering new flows like he used to. He attempts the Rick Ross style pause flow and it doesn't work. Then he tries the southern drawl/phrase-stretch doesn't work either.

Feels like they filled the majority of the album with Hate(BP3)-sounding songs; I'm really not a fan of the slow, conversational flow that's prevalent throughout. Otis is great to me because it was just straight up emceeing, and I had hoped that the album would be like that, but it seems to me that Kanye's using this opportunity to be really experimental with the beat selection. Niggas In Paris is getting lots of love, but that song's horrible to me. Murder to Excellence is sick.

Have to listen to it more obviously, this is just my thoughts after the first listen.

EDIT: Love those Blu-HerFavColor-ish interludes!!

EDIT2: Jay's the Roger Federer of this rap shit: can still compete, but looking real old right now.

the album is like getting a huge box with flashy paper and lights all over it, and when you open it what's inside is nowhere as big and as grand as the box/ornaments suggest, and if you think about it you already have it in more than one color

No Church in the Wild - Good start to the album.
Lift Off - I like this even though it feels weird at top end of a rap album.
Otis - Still loving this song.
New Day - Amazing. Jay's verse could be a little crisper. Kanye shined here.
That's My Bitch - Wow. My favorite song so far. They destroyed this.
Welcome to the Jungle - Swizzy needs permanent laryngitis. Jay's definitely not coasting. His verse is maybe the best verse so far. Surprised to like this song, but I do.
Murder to Excellence - I love the vocal sample in the beat, the beat in general. Good song. Could do without Yeezy's singing.
Why I Love You - Another highlight. This album is thick with standouts.
Illest Motherfucker Alive - That's a lot of silence. Wtf. Sick verse from Ye. Haha at Jay responding to ... Nas in 2002?
Primetime - Fuck this beat is sick. Jay killed it. His lines may not seem as "witty" but are just as memorable.
Joy - One of my favorite tracks, though it's been discussed to death by now.

Damn, Kanye should just be a people's champion for rap heads by now. He's keeping RZA, Q-Tip, No I.D. in his circle and making things move. Obviously people will hate when you're on that level of mainstream, but I can appreciate that he does the hip-hop that we love and makes it accessible at the same time. A hard thing to balance that he certainly learned from Jay and took the torch.

The songs I didn't comment on I didn't care for as much, but I'd still give this album a 4.5/5. Maybe the best album I've heard all year because the standouts are that good.

No Church in the wild - dope as an intro, don't know if Jay's flow works that well, lyrically its dope but flow-wise it sounds like he's trying to find his footing on it. Frank did his thing on here.

Lift off - as an anthem or stadium song this will work but it kinda felt odd at this position on the album. Doesn't even sound like a fully fleshed out song..

N****s in paris - DOPE. This should be a club banger imo..classic Jay flow...if a DJ worth their salt knew how to work this into the rotation, I'd throw this after playing something like Waka's "Grove st. party" sped up a little bit.

Otis - this has already been talked about to death. I still think the track is ok.

Gotta have it - Sounds very radio-friendly..love their flows on this. Love the sample they used.

New Day - I don't hear the "Wu-stuff" Ye raved about on this track. Sounds like some modern electronica-rap hybrid stuff. The beat drum progression is eerily similar to a Dre track. Actually the overall feel is Dre-ish lol. As far as introspection, they delivered. This beat on first listen may grow on me.

Primetime - Love this track. The beat is just ugly (scrunch-face type). Plus the way Jay comes on this is dope. So far what I've noticed is even Jay is copying that Rawse pause flow...smh. Meanwhile, Ye sticks with his signature flow. Both came off lyrically on this. I expect a lot of rappers to try to revisit this on freestyles.

Who Gon Stop Me - the beginning of the song gets me hype!! LOL! I also expect this to rock in the clubs even here state-side. Dunno what ppl are saying about no club-friendly hits but this sounds like yet another one to me. Jay does the rapid-fire flow very well as far as the variety of flows he's displayed I like this the best and it works, the other one he has where he's doing the Rawse type flow sounds like he's trying to find his lane. Jay killed this sheesh. He really sounds re-invigorated on this.

Murder to Excellence - OMG (actual expression) at the way this begins...there is a certain urgency/expectation as the song begins....love the way jay adlibs "bloody murder"...scrunch face..ye came off in his first verse. Jay should not have coasted on his opening..it dang near takes the air out of the song for me. I do like the overall message but Jay fell behind Ye on this one...I feel some other emcees will destroy this beat once the instrumental gets out. I dislike this Jay flow where he's stretching his phrasing...it hasn't worked for years, it still doesn't work.

Welcome to the Jungle - this beat feels so hip hop lol. Takes me back to the late 90's ruff ryders' style beats before the keys come in. Swizzy did great here. lyrically on point

Made in America (Sweet Baby Jesus?) - Love frank on this. The beat sounds like yacht-rock from the 80's. Love ye's verse. Again Jay's flow hampers the quality of his lyrics. Frank to me carries the song...

Why I love you - This Cassius sample is ILL. LOL @ Jay's digs to the old "crew" his rapid-fire flow works very well again on this. Love the way he destroyed it. Jay is in rare form here, with that sarcastic wit we love. Their tandem here to me was perfect.

Bonus cuts:

Illest M alive - Standard fare stadium-anthemic type rap. Even though beat is commonplace and typical it still works. Somehow when you listen to this you expect to hear, "HUGH!" Rawse has truly influenced mainstream rap at this point. Should've scrapped HAM for this.

H.A.M. - Hated this song then still can't stand it now.

That's my B - Loved the song then still love it now.

The Joy - same as above. Though not sure how the sound on this would've fit on the album. Maybe if it were on the actual album you would put it after "Primetime?"

Overall - 3.75/5 in a couple of days I'm sure some of the songs will grow on me. If not for Jay's flows in some songs this would've been an easier 4/5 but will give it some more time.

still pretty boring over all for my tastes... the idea of what good beats sound like now just doesn't resonate with my ears. Good beats are more than studio tricks

I love Kanye as an artist but I think he's taking steps back while thinking he's moving forward

I agree with this ...The album is good, but not dope. Something is missing with these beats.

Ye has become too louis V. for me, musically and lyrically.

He is still very talented and gifted, but he is starting to call this shit in.

MBDTF did absolutely nothing for me. And the person below who said "he's too Louis V. musically and lyrically" really put it in perspective. It's too bad, really.

See 9th is in the same boat that I am in. He even likes the same tracks, why?

He is a vintage hip hop producer, so he is going to be more attracted to a vintage hip hop sound, which is why "joy" is one of the cuts that he likes.

WTT is underwhelming. It is a good album, but not great.

Thank me later and Teflon Don>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Jay let Kanye control the direction of the music, so a lot of these songs do not fit.

But it is better than a lot of shit that is out right now.

Rza's shit was underwhelming, but has been for years for me (except on OB4CL2)

Pharrells is was wack

swizz shit is always terrible

Don't know any of the other producers, but they aint hittin on nothing

Hated kanye's mock Madlib beat, should have just used a track from otis for otis, but thank god they didn't.....

Glad KAnye put his boy 88 on, but shit was still wack.

Shit is just wack to me. I'm 25, but I grew up on golden era hip-hop, and I really only listen to MADLIB, so I'm just not feeling any of this in general. I don't relate to any of what these 2 got to say.

Definitely not gonna get another listen.

I think the biggest problem is the poor song sequencing. The album starts with Jay's worst two verses. It really fucks up the album's flow for me.

I think part of the problem is we're in an era where there's a pretty healthy amount of talented rappers out there. Every bad Jay verse on here had me thinking "if only Kanye spent a year making an album with Kendrick Lamar". Still, Jay has some really nice moments on here.

Overall though, it's a solid album that's growing on me.

What are you guys judging your opinion on?

Listen I know what I like, i've been listening to rap all my life. Why do people feel the need to adjust their taste depending on the artist involved? a song should just be enjoyable within at least a minute of listening. If the song is one thats supposed to knock, It should have you banging hard. If it's chilled down, then the beat needs to be vibe-atious (Electric relaxation, luchini, etc).

Everything here just sounds like an upscaled version of the "Nu Watered down sound" so prevalent in todays music. Music used to be a lot tougher whether sampled (rza, dilla, primo) or computerized (neptunes, timbo, old swizz)

Serious question what are yall judging yalls opinion on?

Chile please. Nothing grandiose about that question, It's not like I'm asking you to validate your opinion, I'm asking how you came to it.

I'm just interested, because this album is clearly wack, but apparently it's a good album to most people. I'm just wondering if thats because of something other than the artist involved. Like I said just sounds like an upscaled version of todays mainstream offerings.

Clearly wack is relative.

I'm totally okay with the sound of the album, because the music came out today. It makes sense that it sounds like a product of today. Its also cool that it sounds upscale, because that could've not happened.

>DO YALL REALLY SEE YOURSELVES LISTENING TO THIS TEN YEARS DOWN
>THE ROAD? Hell even 3 years?

This is the problem. When I was listening to Reasonable Doubt, It Was Written, Riding Dirty, Doggystyle, Cuban Linx, Infamous, Makaveli...all of that stuff...I didn't stop to say 'hey..I like this right now, but what about ten years from now?' What kind of sense does that make to do that right now..on the first day the thing is widely available? Why does ten years from now matter right now if the music works for the individual listener right now?

Now that I'm old (33), I get that nostalgia is so powerful, because its looking back. And remembering back in the day times is sweet because folks tend to remember those times in positive bunches..usually because things were a lot simpler for most folks.

BUT people are out of their minds if they think they can look forward with the same clarity.

At the end of the day, TODAY IS AWESOME..you gotta enjoy that so that you can look BACK ten years from now and say 'damn..that was awesome'. If you sit around saying 'today is cool but I don't know how I'm going to feel about it 10 years from now so I'm underwhelmed', wtf?

Jimaveli

Come on, those albums you listed, you didn't need to ask yourself that question(If You will play it years down the line). They automatically resonate with the true meaning of hip-hop. You didn't have to give them a couple of listens in order to enjoy it. you enjoyed it so much you couldn't stop bumping those albums.

Rap has evolved, and there are albums from every subcategory of the genre that set the bar for what a good album is supposed to embody. This album doesn't follow any of those standards, and that can be good, yet this album is no where near innovative that it can create it's own standards.

Let you in on a secret. I use Sushi spots as litmus tests for people.
That’s right: a 90 min dinner can tell me a person’s entire life
experience w/o them saying a thing. Jump in full throttle with BBQ
Eel? (They been places/seen thangs) Never tried chopsticks but willing
to learn? what’s “shellacked” mean? (Open mind means educated mind and
there are no dumb questions in Comsushing Sushi…sounds so solefull
don’t you agree?) “California Roll, that’s all” (plays it safe,
conservative, and/or too proud to say new experiences scare em, so
stick to what they know, no room for growth) & 2 types of “nah I’m
good” (those who tried Sushi & objectively concluded they don’t like
it, and those that already judge/jury’d it before they attempted it.)

Of course there are some laws I’ve applied to my life in this lane
I’ve decided to travel. 1st and foremost is the only mofos in my circle
are people that I CAN LEARN FROM.

i believe THAT is the first and foremost rule to a successful life.
you are going to be as educated and successful as the 10 most
frequented people you call/text on your phone. seriously. does the
truth hurt? is there an oz. of truth to it?

i keep my studio room at 30 Rock in pop culture hoarder mode cause i
notice that people that visit (mostly artists that sit in with us)
take time out to analyze what im about based on their glance in the
room. im a shy non people person in front of cats i idolize so this
room serves as a small talk substitute that lets me not have to talk
all that much.

they glance: “is that obama?…..a bowling trophy? what’s your
score?….how did you break that grammy?…..wait…BOTH of your
parents came from the same tribe in sierra leone?….prince gave you
that money? why’s it hanging suspended in air like that?….so you
keep Soul Train on repeat 24/7 in here?….what kind of NIKES are
those?!?!?!…

it goes on.

25 years ago this is what hip hop was all about. being on 3 way high
school style playing Rakim or De La or even Hammer over the phone just
talking about it. (he’ll kill me but Tariq was a MASSIVE Hammer
supporter during the Let’s Get It Started phase—–well he did use
the Apache break and back then your choice of breakbeat was a crucial
olive branch for non cats from your side of the world to get accepted)

as i stated in the Tribe doc the first time i had that 3 way summit
meeting with hip hop was Licensed To Ill (back then it was convincing
my cousin that Ad Rock was NOT puerto rican) in 86. and the last time
i had that moment was the tuesday i signed my record deal: Nov 9th
1993. the day Enter The 36 and Midnight Marauders came out. sure other
classics came out. but once you jump in the lake with sharks you no
longer listen from the perspective of a fan….you now listen to it as
a journalist (illmatic) with arms folded (the chronic) jaws dropped
willing to do whatever it takes to use your influence to help
(fantastic vol 1)…and yeah…a lil jealous (aquemini)

so of course not wanting to let a moment go by. im all about being
that 16 year older that is imagining Rakim’s painting of a Word filled
nile in 2011.

wait….did he just…

lol…. of course i dunno what the future is gonna hold for #WTT. but
i am keen enough to see all the signs of history repeating itself:

-the FIRST CAT: “i was there 1st!!!!!!!” people all on it 1st. i heard
it before you did! (i was tempted to write a review on itunes cause
noone wrote one as of 12:05am….but of course having not heard the
actual record i erased all 5 paragraphs lol)
-the FOH cat: there is a cut on The Roots 2nd album called “Swept
Away” my favorite quote: “i’m insane and go against the grain like
Fric (friction), never on no ni**a d**k cause im “just too hip”. cats
who are contrary against popular opinion because THAT is what defines
them.
-the foh to the FOH CATS cat: will embrace anything new/edgy because
that will reflect them.
-the actual objective no attachment cats: note….this doesn’t exist
people. for if you love hip hop then we ALL got stakes in one of the 3
above.

im getting a rush/kick outta everyone in the twittersphere weighing in
on #WTT its like watching drought fiends spotting that last crack rock
behind the couch on the floor praying to god to get a jones.

the “who won?!” lyrical war.
the “wtf he say?!?!?!” rewind moment
the “hmmm…. rza, tip, & pete don’t sound like rza, tip, & pete”
which alone is an interesting convo on its own thread. which im hoping
leads to “who is rza, tip, & pete, and how can i learn more about
them?” investigation
the “brag brag brag brag” grumps
the “well half these songs are dark fantasy throwaways so does it
count?” blogosphere cats

im not gonna yell @@@@@ classic just yet (never did yell that too
much, for a near classic @@@@1/2 reads more impressive than a a first
day out @@@@@ imo) but all the signs are there.

you comparing it your coming of age soundtrack? (chris rock said you
cherish the music for the first 5 years of you gettin some….that
becomes the music of “your time”)
this causing more arguments and debates with your crew?
you starting to feel old like *shrug*….i guess life is gonna pass me
by then….”–
you living in the moment and just loving it?

all these things make the C word.

and its some scary unfair ish.

i mean who wants to watch Kobe surpass Jordan in his ring acquisition?
to love hip hop is to love the underdog and hate the establishment.
so what does it mean when you watch the establishment go all dog on you?

conflicted feelings right?

jay and ye damn near wrote the book on “winner take all”. and all we
could do is vicariously live in it. and most times we have trouble
doing just that (im a dj, so the same cats arguing with me about
liking or not liking this project will be the same “LOOKAHEA! whatchu
need!!?!? what what chu need I GOT!!!!!!?!?!!?” quoting cats after
their 2nd glass of jack and coke when i spin it)

psssh this album is full of all the signs:

bass that killed my system.
hypocrisy (autotune, hov actually indeed having regrets)
great humor (ye—along with Phonte— is my favorite INTENTIONALLY
FUNNY person in black music since morris day. punch lines with
straight face and no shame of “will this make me look…..” if you
don’t laugh at that Adam/Rib line….you have 0 sense of humor. even
Ye has to pat his backpatter on the back for a job well done on
Primetime)
hmmm moments: i get the feeling “illest mofo alive” had a different
beat to it cause hov’s verse sounds like an acapella blend slightly
off on a Ron G mixtape. but that Peeing line flushes it all out. cause
that’s an ill visual. (not me but Jay)
beat switches for that ass: pt 2 of excellence
shock moments: swizz’s patches and presentation shocked me in a GREAT way.
that martin scorsese visual: hov’s foolin nobody but himself on “made
in america” that grandma/arm & hammer story is classic just like
martin’s mom cameo in goodfellas cooking the crew breakfast while a
body lies in the trunk.

ehh lemme stop.

even writing this review of a non review will be news.

im just saying.

live in the moment.

all this praise and controversy and conflict and argument and debates
and “WTF!?!!?!?!?” and nonsensical questulance is the true meaning of
hip hop.

so just so that yall straight next time yall see me whining about hip
hop….its not about hip hop more than its about the feeling hip hop
once gave.

the kind of feeling that now has me 2 hours late for my day job.

“the dog ate my score to the new sketch jimmy my bad….gimme 4 mins
to try something new”

—no seriously i got 5 “the hell are you coming in?!?!?!?!” text right now.

just wanted to weigh in my 2 cents and let these mofos know who i am.

Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx
GZA - Liquid Swords
Wu-Tang Clan - Enter The Wu-Tang
Ghostface Killah - Ironman

...get these immediately. RZA produced most if not all of the songs. RZA's actual solo albums are weak, he's better in smaller doses with the rest of the clan. If you like these four, get these:

Wu-Tang Clan - Wu-Tang Forever
Ol' Dirty Chambers - Return To The 36 Chambers
Method Man - Tical

...and maybe the first Bobby Digital album from RZA if you're feeling adventurous. I envy you being able to hear all this for the first time.

Esteemed author of the celebrated, double-platinum post: "Drake - Wu-Tang Forever".

which is VERY surprising to me
this might be Jays best work in years
it still sounds *lazy* and all that shit but at least some of his lines are clever this time around
honestly Kanye didn't bring it as hard as i thought he would
maybe he fell back in honor of his Big Brother
or maybe the Amber Rose shit distracted him
but there are very few bright spots on this album for him i think
best tracks imo are

Sounds kind of like if twisted fantasy and the black album had a baby. I know people might blow that statement out of proportion comparing this to the black album, its too early to say its that good, but it has that darker vibe. The mix between the dark synthy drum popping sound mixed with the deeper layers and kanye epicness really hits the spot. Call me crazy, it reminds me of Game Theory in a way. Of course this is ye and jiggas game thoery- there are elements of pop in the thick layers.

I was expecting a joy album- classic soulful hip hop production with ye and jay rapping playfully over it. They made something much deeper, sonically and content wise.

But who gon stop me has still got to go.

I have a feeling if Kanye wasn't exiled out of music for a bit this would have been what his 5th album would have sound like. Big electro beats, mostly lifestyle rhymes and hints to classic hip hop but mostly trying to take hip hop in a new direction (For better or worse)

But one factor to remember is how differently we consumed these albums.

With G.O.O.D. Friday, we literally got the majority of the Kanye album on a week by week basis. So by the time the album dropped, we knew the songs and, even if it was listened to in sequence and all at once, the experience was sorta tainted.

Where as with WTT, it's fresh and new. I've heard three tracks on a 16 track album. Pretty good.

i feel like jay's best moments are when he's more introspective and talking about a serious topic (new day, love me, black excellence). he's lost a step with his flows, and he's not as sharp with punchlines and not as witty as he once was but i think he's at a stage in his career where he can make great music, just by being himself. his whole career was based on him proving himself, but now that he's pretty much declared the best in the game, he can sort of delve into more personal topics, thats what i hope he does on his next solo lp.

An album with two rappers, I really just wanna hear them rap over beats and try to out rap each other. This is more like a kanye album featuring jay z. Too many hooks, bridges, etc. I may be one of the few that enjoyed Jay's contribution more than kanye.

I also find it funny that some rappers get sick of rapping but they never seem to get sick of singing horribly. I'm gonna need kanye to never sing again cuz he messed up a few songs on here with horrible singsongy rap.

Ye and Jay won mad awards, sold mad units, both worth over 200 mil each, just basically running the industry

This project is monumental, for 2 of the games biggest names to comes together!

Yet cats complaining about music not being replay worthy, that not “feeling it” and “it’s not for them”

This has nothing to do with the actual quality of the music.

legitimate opinion on, you know, the music.

sounds like you're the one who is focusing on all the wrong shit.

but you think it's just about well these 2 big stars made an album together, be happy... it's an event... quit worrying about the music?? This is a music message board dumbass...

you're really caught up in between their ball sacks... I bet you had HAM on repeat for a month once it came out...

the music has to come 2nd. The impact ,relevance and influence of Kanye and Jay makes this album worth the purchase alone. These are 2 of rap music’s most important and prominent figures not named Dr. Dre and Eminem. So cats can talk all the rah-rah about a “Euro Techno” sound all they want. But best believe this is a monster release. And will undoubtedly be the number 1 album in the US by weeks end.

Just seems like a bunch of songs strung together... Kanye's albums always have some sort of a cohesive feel to them... This one doesn't... Feels more like a mixtape... Also, a little disappointed in Kanye with this one because it does sorta sound like an extension of BP3 with a little Beautiful Dark Twi... I've always liked Kanye because each album has always sounded different and he's always reinventing what is "cool" and popular... I don't hear any risky songs on here... The fact that their lead single was HAM is further proof of them just going with what is already popular instead of something new...

once the beats stopped dominating the conversation.

If this were more cohesive I might could throw the album up in the pantheon, but it's still enjoyable as hell even though it doesn't have much flow to it and some of the stuff like the Blades of Glory and Frank Ocean features feel a little tacked on/overemphasized.

I'd go 8 - 8.5 with it after about 8 listens.

some of the laziest lines in his entire catalogue are on here... flow is always dope and I like the album itself, I like the production, the songs as a whole, but as a long time Jay fan I'm officially disappointed with him, I was borderline after BP3 but I'm starting to really wonder why he's still rappin at this point...

Love Frank Ocean on Made In America, hate him on the intro, that hook is so dope and he brings nothing to it... imagine R.Kelly doing that hook!

Would you have put anyone else on these songs?

These seem to have a great chemistry balance going on them already between Ye/Hov.

When was the last good back-and-forth album like this... seriously?

I wouldn't have minded a CO Ricky or Jay Elect feature on one song. But that's it.

And I hate to say it, because Nas is my favorite rapper of all time, but he needs to push that album back. There's no way he can compete in this shadow, even if he sidesteps it and does the music he's best at.

It's like the equivalent of a Summer Blockbuster film. Like "Iron Man" or something. Not everything can be Tarantino or David Lynch. Entertaining, lots of money put into it, lots of action, not necessarily going to make you think.

Have you noticed how young Kanye sounds next to Hov on this album btw? He sounds like such a toddler who's trying to impress his wiser older bro. He's like "LOOK AT MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. I got a jetttttttttt plane!!!!" And then his bro is like "Yeah I see you lil bro. I see you. Nice jet lil bro.

186. "Watch The Drones"
In response to Reply # 0

Before anybody cries hater, Jay-Z is my all time favorite rapper and I happened to agree with those who thought that My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was album of the year last year.

Moving forwards. Putting "The Joy" at the end was perfect. It's the only really dope song on here and highlights why the rest are so wack. Kanye was on an untouchable, unmatchable hot streak. On MBDTF, he had that perfect balance. He could talk about his shallow shit in a deep way and still be moving. This time around it's just hollow.

This is album is on some Tea Party, GOP Rap shit. Watch The Drones doesn't go anywhere new lyrically, it's content to show you Jay-Z and Kanye in Furs, on leather recliners, rapping about money stacks. It's corny, considering their age and their proven ability to talk about other topics. It actually makes me cringe when they reference people like Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. The irony is overwhelming. Those civil rights leaders cared about equality, not too old assholes rapping about their personal decadence. This is like rapping for rich white people and fraternity boys. Even that allegedly deep "Murder to Excellence". That song is deep for Ye or Jay, but it's not deep in the general sense. A million rappers that get branded as pretentious, hippie, bohemian faggots (i.e. Mos Def) provide social commentary that makes these guys observations look elementary.

The beats bang for the most part, and they ride the beats well and all of that but something is just so unbelievably.....hollow. This album lacks soul, honesty and passion in just about every song on here with the exception of The Joy (the only intelligent, meaningful, soulful track).

I know we're talking about Kanye and Jay-Z here, so it's not like I expect some ultra deep shit, but I also didn't expect an album THIS shallow.

I'm thoroughly surprised to be this disappointed, but this won't rank on my year end list. Kendrick Lamar blew this shit outta the water (he sounds 100 times smarter and driven then these old men rapping on the yacht). Hell, on the mainstream front, Drake will blow this outta the water 'cause he still remembers how to tell the truth (word to Marvin's Room and Dreams Money Can Buy).

In response to Reply # 186

During Jay's weaker verses on this, I tend to wonder what Kendrick would sound like in his place.

I definitely understand your "hollowness" complaint but I kinda expected that so I wasn't bothered by it. Still, I am enjoying the album overall more than I thought. It's an incredibly minor work for both Jay, Kanye and hip hop in general. It's a fun and brainless summer movie. Fortunately, there's enough new hip hop out there (Section 80) at the moment that is firing all cylinders that I can't imagine being hung up on WTT either way.

Overall it's a good album but I agree with the reggie bush analogy to an extent. I'm not a fan of vintage hip hop in 2011 (unless it's really, really good) but the new style that they're going for isn't perfected yet imo.

No Church- very good intro, Ocean kills it and I love the guitar sample.

Lift Off- Like the epic horn build but nothing else. Beyonce is too polished and diva for hip hop. It's just doesn't sound right and the offbeat/on beat vibe they were going for doesn't do it for me.

Niggas in Paris- Okay, not liking it as much as others. Jay has one of his better versus, not really feeling ye on this one. The blades of glory sample and the outro are by far the best parts imo.

Otis- I don't like it as much as the people who love it and don't dislike it as much as the people who hate it. It's a solid track but to me the beat is too minimalistic. It doesn't as full as it should imo. I think there should be more claps or something. It sounds like a very good demo to me.

Gotta Have It- not feeling it at all. Worst track on the album imo.

New Day- One of the standouts, very Roots-ish to me. Sounds like something Black Thought would kill. Love the autotune vocals, both had very solid verses on this one.

That's My Bitch- Should be the lead single. Not much substance lyrically but it's a fun song and the beat is top notch. La Roux was a great choice for the hook (she works on pretty much anything).

Welcome to the Jungle- Pretty solid but I wish they expanded on the beat musically when all of the synths and pianos come in. It teases you but never resolves the way you want it to. Jay and Ye have good chemistry on this one. The back and forth style works well here.

Who Gon Stop Me- First part is okay, second part God awful. It pains me to say this because I'm a huge dubstep fan but they had no idea what they were doing on this one. They should have got a real dubstep producer for this like Skream, Benga, Joker etc. not sak pase. The second part is the worst part of the album. Weak, sloppy, attempt at a dubstep drop.

Murder to Excellence- Great track, the out of tune guitar bugs me though. It doesn't add any aesthetic to the track just makes the guitar sound slightly out of place. The second part is one of the album highlights though.

Made in America- No real feelings towards this one. Nothing really stands out as good or bad. Not into the 80's pads though.

Why I Love You- Best track on the album hands down imo. This would be one of the strongest songs on any ye or jay album. Love everything about it.

Illest Motherfucker Alive- Not a fan of ye on this one, jay came correct though. Bet is decent, little simplistic but not bad.

HAM- I seem to be in the minority but I always liked this track. Love the mix of 808, arps and orchestration going on here and Jay again comes correct. It's a little uneven (too full at certain points and too sparse at others) but overall I can get down with it.

Primetime- See I sid I'm a huge fan of vintage hip hop but this works for me. It actually sounds like it was produced in 2011 not 1995 and expands on the basic template for a throwback hip hop song. And on this track the out of tune element on the piano actually works and adds something new the song unlike the guitar on murder to excellence.

The Joy- Very solid, Pete Rock does a good job here. It's not my favorite kinda sound but I love anything with Curtis Mayfield so it works for me. Not one of the best racks on the album but far, far from the worst.

Jay (who I am a big fan of- even his newer work) is supposed to be some kind of brilliant hustler/business man

This album is being TALKED about.

All those pre-orders. All the hype.

And you didn't have Jay Electronica and/or J Cole drop 16?

Even if you don't like either of those dudes...

How does that make sense??

its the sole reason why it exists. they are the kings of rap.

this isnt about their underlings. they arent legends. they're just starting out.

WTT a celebration of their own status in the rap game. an official coronation.

now they might throw em a bone and bring some of em on the tour. but i wouldnt be surprised if they didnt.

The 2 albums sound very tonally and sonically similar to me. How many of these beats were originally made for MBDTF?

With that said, its different enough from that album and feels like a natural progression. I think it does have a cohesiveness to it, while also having a sense of unpredictability. Compare and contrast a song like "New Day" with "Why I Love You." They sound like they're from different universes, but they still fit on the album and don't seem out of place.

This album, more than anything, just increases my anticipation for whatever Kanye's next project is. He is on fire creatively right now.

I'd probably give this an 8.5/10. Will be on repeat for a couple weeks. Might even have to give MBDTF a few spins for the first time in a few months.

Maybe it's the nostalgia of back when people use to CARE ENOUGH about a hip-hop album to argue, debate, discuss and dissect at every turn. Albums come like that every so often...where you can get into a conversation with a complete stranger about it at the gas station or some shit...

I like WTT just for that reason alone...for bringing THAT event album feeling back.

Now musically, I'm not as down on Jay-z's bars as some seem to be. I thought Hov got busy on this..granted just like he spit on this album..He looks in the mirror cuz he's competing with himself at this point. You gotta listen tho, Jay is talking that shit on here..

It's pretty obvious the artistic direction is more of Kanye's influence, I can dig it. Once I understood what they are going for with the sound of this, I thought the production was very dope..2011's version of vintage hip-hop, mixed with early 2000's Outkast like experimentation. Some songs took a couple listens to click with me (wasn't feeling the RZA track at first glance, then it grew on me).

Ohh, and we got Q-Tip, Pete Rock, and RZA production on a high profile hip-hop album in 2011, Thats What's up.

Album of the year?...Yeah so far (I had Kendrick Lamar or Killer Mike before this dropped)
Classic? To early to tell, gotta let the dust settle first

Exactly. Good luck finding another high-profile mainstream album in 2011 that's THIS hip-hop.

You could take most of these verses on the album and place them against any of their competition Em, Wayne, Drake, Rick Ross, Nas, whoever, and they'd come out on top. And the beats fucking bang.

No one is on top like this. Watch the throne.

been listening to it for the past days (headphones, studio monitors and as background music) - i'm fan of both jay and kanye and therefor appreciate the projects they put out by default (my guards down) - but this gets better by each playback..

They never put out a "perfect" album (who does btw) - jay came close with RD - there is always gonna be songs, verses, creative decisions that i don't really understand - like some of the beats jay picks (e.g dig a hole on KC) or kanye songs (the brandy joint on LR)..

only song i don't really get is 'lift off' - not a fan of B (to clean) and i really don't get Kanye "singing" parts on the song (????) - but the production is good never the less..

In response to Reply # 0

It's all sound and fury. On the surface it sounds exactly like they want you to think it is: A Clash of the Titans type of event, but it just ends up being this loud bombastic mess interspersed with some interesting moments.

I like about half of the album. Just like I liked about half of BP III and MBDTF. The problem with both of these dudes, is that they refuse to do what they are great at, which is hip-hop. The other problem is that they keep getting pats on the back like this shit is great. Some of it is admittedly good, (and I mean just good) and some of it is just dull.

I'll say this though, their next releases will be interesting, but I won't expect them to be any good.

I do remember MBDTF being a well reviewed album so maybe it's just not a pat on the back, and their new music just isn't for you.

us by not pushing the Primo, Madlib, Pete Rock sounding album a long time ago. Wish they'd at least release those tracks on the deluxe version but I guess they just used it all for the sake of hype and keeping ppl's attention the whole project.

That's a hilarious theory. Those names wouldn't be huge selling points at this moment. And they wouldn't have needed to do that to keep interest.

In response to Reply # 235

I don't know why it seems so far-fetched. I mean b/c they're so high-profile they'll always have the attention of the mainstream but it's harder to get the attention/excitement of the heads and more serious music listener when you're that mainstream and striving for such success. So you drop names and get them to discuss you in interviews about how things are going, wait for the hype to build up there and as it gets closer drop what's actually going to happen and go full-throttle with the mainstream hype-building. If they announced from the start what the album would sound like as it is now, the hate would have been building for almost a year and would probably hurt the overall hype and critical acclaim.

I mean why else would Kanye go all over Twitter bragging about working with Madlib and others and then leave them off the album and even the deluxe release? Doesn't make much sense to me. Even if they did a mixtape before the album that would make a little bit more sense.

Maybe it didn't work in the end. But in 2011 Kanye/Jay don't need to hype it up with those names. Being Kanye/Jay is pretty much enough. Maybe they were excited at the moment and talked about it, but it's not needed for hype. I bet if you asked many of the people who bought WTT, if the Madlib rumors were a big reason for their purchase they'd answer no.

so maybe 100,000 fans are upset that Primo and Madlib didn't make the cut? the album is good. i don't see what the complaint is.

There's some good to great songs on there but overall a pretty weak album, especially on the beat aspect of it. I'm not saying that they lost a huge portion of their audience by not having them on it, just saying that it was a strategic step to announce the album the way they originally did and how it is now finally sold in stores.

Yeah, Primetime, Beat by Dion, Our third eon
That’s what the f**k we on
Mo’ money, 40 year old phenom
Our 15 minutes of fame has stretched beyond
At 42 be better than 24, I carried the 4-5, mastered 48 laws
Still wearing my 23’s they can’t f**k with the boy
As far as them 16’s, I’m 23 of it all
Primetime, riding that 6 deuce
That 9-11 I only subtract the roof
Started in 88’, Got warm in 92’, I landed in 96’
That’s the year I came through
I hit the club, ordered some Grey Goose
Switched it for Ciroc to give Puff’s stock a boost
New money, I found the fountain of youth
I’m headed to Miami to f**k up the Fontaine Bleu
A case of Ace, make it 2, Ni**a we rolling, beat the deuce
The night is young, what the f**k we gon’ do (ooh)

EDIT: Personally, I'd take narrative rhymes over "wittiness" any day. Jay's maintained a good line here and there in his verses, but he's always been more on that old school storytelling flavor. But then again I hate the new strategy of rhyming, the simplification of punchlines to the most basic similies/metaphors, the lack of story, etc., like Drake, Wayne, and at times Kanye uses.

This is to the memory of Danroy Henry
Too much enemy fire to catch a friendly
Strays from the same shade ni***, we on the same team
Giving you respect, I expect the same thing
All-black everything, ni*** you know my fresh code
I’m out here fighting for you, don’t increase my stressload!
Ni**** watching the throne, very happy to be
Power to the people, when you see me, see you

I arrived on the day Fred Hampton died
Uh, real ni**** just multiply
And they say by 21 I was supposed to die
So I’m out here celebrating my post-demise
If you put crabs in a barrel to insure your survival
You're gon' end up pulling down ni**** that look just like you
What up, Blood? What up, cuz? It’s all black, I love us

Black excellence, opulence, decadence
Tuxes next to the president, I’m present
I dress in Dries and other boutique stores in Paris
In sheepskin coats, I silence the lambs
Do you know who I am, Clarice?
No cheap cologne whenever I “shh-shh”
Success never smelled so sweet
I stink of success, the new black elite
They say my Black Card bears the mark of the beast
I repeat: my religion is the beat
My verse is like church, my Jesus piece
Now please, domino, domino
Only spot a few blacks the higher I go
What’s up to Will? Shout out to O
That ain’t enough -- we gonna need a million more
"Kick in the door" Biggie flow
I’m all dressed up with nowhere to go

In response to Reply # 250

Probably a rap first: a reference to Plato’s Euthyphro

The Euthyphro dilemma arises when Socrates asks Euthyphro, “Is the pious loved by the gods because it is pious, or is it pious because it is loved by the gods?” In other words, (i) do the gods love something because it is pious or (ii) is something pious because the gods love it? Socrates and Euthyphro both agree that (i) is true, but Socrates argues that if (ii) is also true and something is pious because the gods love it then (i) and (ii) together would yield a self-perpetuating cycle in which the gods love the pious because it is the pious and the pious are only pious because the gods love it

The dialectic gets at one of the central questions of morality (sovereignty, omnipotence, freedom of the will, morality without God) and has implications not only for metaphysics and theology but also for epistemology

Jay also one-ups Plato, because there have been a bunch of popes named Pius, who may or may not have been pious.

Hard to argue against that at all. I mean he has said he's God before, you know Jay HOVA, but I don't imagine anything this lyrically compelling rhyme and technique wise.

Solid album by two well-established artists within Hip-Hop which exceeded my expectations. I wouldn't call it a favourite of mine but it will be getting a few plays for the next few weeks.

i hear a Pimp C, Michael Jackson, 2pac shout.
I think its the first time Jay might've got his "RIP Pimp C" on without mentioning his name.

to me, it sounded lazy as shit for the most part .....it kinda reminded me of The love Movement in that way... two guys, capable of doing much better, doing WHATEVER over nice sounding tracks....only difference is, there are a couple songs on Watch the Throne where the two weren't phoning it in...

ROLLING STONE:

RZA Discusses His Role Producing 'Watch the Throne''

Kanye said, 'Send some more of that Wu sh-t,'" RZA tells Rolling Stone

By Simon Vozick-Levinson
August 1, 2011 10:45 AM ET RZADario Cantatore/Getty ImagesKanye West produced much of his full-length collaboration with Jay-Z, Watch the Throne, by himself – but he reached out to old-school vets such as Q-Tip and RZA for a few key assists. "I'm really honored to be a part of the project," RZA, who produced the grimy "New Day," tells Rolling Stone. "These two are obviously very capable in their own right, so to include me in this classic project is a testament of how much respect we share for one another."

RZA was in China on the set of The Man With the Iron Fists, the Russell Crowe-starring martial arts movie he's directing, when he heard from West last December. "Kanye asked me to send tracks while they were in Australia," says the Wu-Tang Clan master. "I just thought I would send some sh*t that would be rugged. I know they can find the poppy, hip-hop places, but I wanted to send them some real edgy sh*t. Apparently they thought they were great – Kanye said, 'Send some more of that Wu sh*t!'"

While RZA hasn't yet heard the completed Watch the Throne (due August 8th), his expectations are high. "In the past, when Jay-Z did Best of Both Worlds with R. Kelly, I thought it was a great album but the campaign went south because of personalities," he says. "With this project, it's the best of many worlds. These two guys have a great chemistry and a great relationship. I'm excited."

yeah...

this album would be really good if the first 5 songs were removed. after "gotta have it" damn near every track is official.

seems like both these dudes are on cruise control lyrically @ this point. i will say that i appreciate kanye influencing jay to do more of his introspective shit, which is where he really shines.

kanye is orchestrated a high level of musicianship to rap that reminds of dungeon fam/soulquarians with multiple people collab on one song from a production standpoint. i think Dre is paying attention, but wants his own 'crew' of producers. Kanye has a lot of very talented people around him

I agree that this album seems to be trying to compete with both dance music and the hipster crowd but don't know how much it's protecting boom-bap or if it's pushing hip hop into different territories (Not a bad thing either). Jay-z definitely knows how to sell albums, from pretending to hate on autotune while working with Kanye and Lil Wayne and now pretending to bring back boom-bap while being more influenced by anything but.

I think its pushing HipHop into other territories. For me its an album that could be like the starting point of a new era.

I love this album. I am 36 years old, been listing to HipHop for over 20 years now and this is the first album in years that got me hyped again.

I thank Jay and Kanye for taking risks and trying to reinvent themselves.

HipHop is dead said Nas...Jay and Kanye brought it back to life..

Beautifull album..

You crazy???

He is spittin' fire on most tracks. Thought provoking lyrics and ill flows.

I dare to say that lyrically, this might be his best work...

...except for Made In America. It does sound like a less-bad version of Young Forever, although that isn't saying much really.

Lift Off is fine as long as you listen to it as a 'Beyonce featuring Kanye West and Jay-Z' song. I've really warmed up to Gotta Have It, that beat is crazy. Murder To Excellence is still the best song on the album imo.

I don't think Beyonce was the problem. The beat was cool, an over the top chorus, but the main problem was Kanye & Jay. Neither actually rapped on the song. It was some weird concoction

If it were a song on her album it'd be top of the crop. The song just feels weird with Kanye and Jay hamming it up. At first I thought it was a five star song until I realized how much of the song is hers and how little my enjoyment of it had to do with either rapper or really the lyrics of B's hook.

Her voice just makes me want to smang it.

It's not some grade A singing, it like the chorus was meant for some stadium effect. The last 40 secs with just her is the best moment of the song.

lift off (i guess i'm one of the few who enjoyed beyonce's "big" chrous and pharrell's beat change-up was a nice addition. however, jay and ye's vocals are completely inessential. rhyme or stfu...)

niggas in paris (sophisticated ignorance? i suppose... the vocal sample is apt btw. provocative and gaudy.)

otis (fans of the chop seem to be calling this shoddy work. i happen to disagree.)

gotta have it (i wonder if ye inserted the james brown chop since he has a co-producer credit or was it p's doing. it's a great addition regardless of whose idea it was. this is definitely one of the highlights for me.)

new day (i was uncertain about running nina thorough autotune at first, but this track grew on me immensely. reminds me of the wu-tang forever/bobby digital era.)

that's my bitch (misogyny is part of the "game" they say... i can't help but cringe when jay refers to beyonce as his bitch, but the production/female vocals drew me in.)

murder to excellence (when the tracklisting was revealed this immediately stuck out as one of the worst song titles of all time lol. it's quite funny that it ended up being one of the best on the album. what more can be said about s1's change-up?)

primetime (it's plain raw.)

i enjoy most of the tracks listed purely for their production value. this isn't an album i'll be returning to for its lyrical content. the ostentatious aspect of it all is highly entertaining.

it should have been a Beyonce song... without those two, and perhaps not on this album. LOL

"Why I Love You" and "New Day" are on repeat. 88-Keys did his thing on "No Church in the Wild".

"Lift Off" with Beyonce tries to come off like some inspirational song but with Jay & Ye rapping about material things it doesn't work for me.

- 88 Keys did one HELL of a Kanye impersonation on the boards (opening track)

- my version had the Pete Rock song, "Joy"... I like Aeon's flip of that sample better, but that's a tough song regardless

- why was "Lift Off" included? it doesn't suck (though I couldn't help but think of the "Big Ghost" review) but it feels like an outtake from 808s with Beyonce in the lead

- this feels like OB4CL in that, it's a "Jay and Kanye" project, Jay is playing Ghost, and in the aforementioned "Lift Off", other artists can be the focal point of the song

I honestly can't fathom who is a threat to Jay-Z and Kanye's "throne" in rap.
Waka Flocka and Gucci? While I love to sing along to their lyrics when I ride my bike to the Wexner Center, those dudes are hardly gold together.
Lil Wayne and Drake? It's hard to imagine Forbes magazine inviting either to sit down with Warren Buffett, as Jay-Z was last year.
As Jay says on "H.A.M," the lead single from Jay and Ye's Watch the Throne, "Watch the Throne don't step on our road, bad enough we let you step on our globe."
Musically, the people chosen for the hooks cover every base, from Odd Future's Frank Ocean to Beyonce, Otis Redding and Curtis Mayfield. Production-wise, this album goes everywhere from sexy weird to quirky, and from Southern tracks to classic soul and electronic with interesting sequencing.
The subject matter jumps from hedonism on songs like "N*ggas in Paris" to the sobering "Murder to Excellence," in which Kanye points out that more Americans were killed in Chicago this year than in Iraq.
But Jay returns to the ego trip on "Who Gon Stop Me?," in which he raps over a dubstep beat: "I graduated to the MoMA. And I did all this without a diploma!"
What does it mean to be king in 2011?
Six years ago, Jay-Z famously rapped that you just needed to be "a business, man." Now, it seems, you have to be a multi-millionaire hipster.

which is a good thing.

As fare as rap albums go - it's on steady rotation - the highs are high and the low's are only low because of the potential/my expectations..

Sounds like they had great fun creating this..

and my previous first listen post on how at the time I thought Jay wasn't bringing it lyrically...

boy was I WRONG. Just reading "No Church in the Wild" lyrics alone had me OPEN. I had to go back to "Murder 2 Excellence" sheesh...Jay is somewhere else right now lyrically. A lot of these verses have double meanings, some of the bars have several entendres. I truly feel for cats thinking they can outrap this dude whose whole style is built off the #hashtag rap phenom (looking @ tunechi).
