I'm glad I saw the Beastie Boys when I did (On the Mix-Up tour), would have pissed me off if I never got to see all 3 of them.

Paul's Boutique is a top 10 album for me and has my favorite song by MCA on it "A Year & A Day". Has a crazy beat and he basically spills out everything going through he mind at the time making it easier to understand how he went from a drunk frat boy to a peace-loving Buddhist.

Over the past year, I've seen various forms of the disease destroy lives from 7 to 70. People I'm close friends with and people I've only known through music. It kills lives literally and figuratively.

You know those stupid decals of the little guy peeing that people put on their cars? They usually put something stupid underneath for the guy to pee on and just makes me hate bumper sticker mentality even more. But the other day, I saw a guy getting in his car and he had the little guy peeing on just the word "cancer." I had to go up and thank him for finally putting that symbol to good use.

My grandfather and aunt (54 years old) both died from it (brain and breast, respectively) within the past couple of years.

With my aunt, she was diagnosed with it in the mid-90's and had beaten it initially, only for it to come back 10 years or so later. She made it to my college graduation and had lost weight, but she was still the aunt I had always known. By thanksgiving she didn't even look like the same person anymore.

We had a family gathering around that time when it was clear she wasn't going to make it and she wanted everyone around while she was still of clear mind. When I first saw her I didn't know how to react as she was so small and weak. I was scared to look at her, which made me ashamed. She picked up on this, though, and told me "I know I look different but I'm still your aunt, I still know what's going on". This was something I kept in mind with my grandfather a few years later when his cancer started doing its damage.

On both sides of my family (and even my step-mom's side, for good measure), cancer has been a constant uninvited guest.

I actually got to meet him in brooklyn supreme court in a room of us who ignored jury duty summons to the point that they sent letters basically saying 'you better come or else'. dude was mad cool and easy going and even said bye as he left after showing proof he didn't live in brooklyn anymore.

but I liked the last album a lot and was looking forward to future stuff (Definitely tours). Was hoping they'd be one of the few hip hop artists that are able to keep a career past 40 y/o or at least hold my interest. Who knows what the other guys will do but I'm glad they at least were able to get that last album out properly and inducted into the HOF (Regardless if he was there) before he died.

Man...D was so real....MCA Forever....

---

V Exclusive! D.M.C. Praises The Beastie Boys' Adam Yauch aka MCA
May 4, 2012

D.M.C., legendary emcee and member of the iconic hip-hop group Run-D.M.C., offers his memories of fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and late Beastie Boys great Adam “MCA” Yauch.

“When we first met MCA and the Beastie Boys back in the early ‘80s it was almost like we were in a movie. These guys were outrageous, spontaneous, funny, loud, confident…they were so real. We thought MCA, Ad-Rock, and Mike D were some of the coolest cats on the face of the earth. It was just their energy. The Beasties didn’t care. They would dress up in the sweat suits . They had the whole rebellious thing of, ‘We are who we are.’ It was the same feeling that hip-hop had. MCA and them wanted to be unique. It was like that for all of us, including Run-D.M.C. We wanted to standout; we wanted to have fun. And although the Beasties were punk rock, they were still able to be hip-hop. They weren't white rappers trying to be black. They weren't rapping about Cadillac’s and 40 ounces. They didn’t where the fat gold chains and the Godfather hats like Run-D.M.C. and Jam Master Jay did. We thought we were crazy, but MCA and those guys were crazy with their sneakers, their leather jackets, their Budweiser beer and all the stuff they did. Real recognizes real.

The Beastie Boys were giving the same feeling of hip-hop, but with a different expression. And MCA was an important part of that. His voice was incredible. It was deep, rugged, it was powerful and it demanded authority. MCA’s voice was like the flipside to Chuck D’s voice! When you listened to a Beastie Boys record, he made you say, ‘Who is this guy?’ Because Ad-Rock and Mike D had great voices, too. But they had a crazy twang and higher pitch to their sound. MCA’s voice was the father figure of the group. When you listen to the Beasties, MCA’s voice basically told everybody, ‘Y’all can think we are a joke all you want, but we are real with what we do.’

I remember touring with MCA and the Beasties on Run-D.M.C.’s Raising Hell Tour and the one we co-headlined with them, The Together Forever tour. There is one story about MCA that I always mention. I remember we were touring in Europe and the stage had gotten really wet because they were throwing beer around all over the place. So we are on the side watching the Beastie Boys’ show thinking, ‘Yo, somebody is going to bust their ass tonight.’ Sure enough, MCA slipped and flew about 20 feet in the air . He came down real hard. We all thought he was severely hurt. We were like, ‘Yo, call the ambulance!’ But this motherfucka just gets up and keeps rapping! We were shocked. That’s the type of performer MCA was.

What is MCA’s legacy? It’s the legacy of the Beastie Boys. MCA is from a legendary group that helped change music. You can’t talk about Eminem without talking about the Beasties first. The Beastie Boys made it possible for not just Eminem to have the courage to do hip-hop, he also made it possible for Vanilla Ice, 3rd Bass, and for any white guy to pick up the mic and be accepted. They are true pioneers. And not just white rappers…black rappers should bow down to them. Because the Beastie Boys accomplished so much for the entire hip-hop culture. These rappers nowadays can’t even approach what they did. They will never do what the Beastie Boys did. They changed the world. Run-D.M.C. will always be connected with them. We traveled the world together. We laughed together, we slept in the same rooms together, we cried together, we got drunk together…we changed history together.

It’s a sad day for music, a sad day for MCA’s family and friends, and a sad day for hip-hop. But it’s all good because at least we got some Beastie Boys records we can go listen to tomorrow.—As told to Keith Murphy (@murphdogg29)

I cant remember how old I was when it dropped , but I thought that album was pure
dopeness... that was when Hip Hop had no color, no region, no coast.
I'm glad I was there to see it, and them being a part of it.

They meant alot to me as a kid/teenager.

When I was around 13 I saw them perform with Basehead, the Bad Brains and Firehose. First surprise was that Horowitz played guitar with Firehose. Then while waiting for the Beasties to play they started setting up Hammonds and congas. Check Your Head was coming out two weeks later so we weren't prepared for the change in style yet. Really shocked when they started playing these soul-jazz inspired grooves.

Check Your Head was a real catalyst for me getting into rare groove and record collecting. Whenever I hear a song from it I immediately remember how HIGH I used to get back then. Those trippy soul-jazz tracks were my faves cause I was just discovering that type of music.

But yah...those three albums....License to ill, Paul's and Check your head. Incredible artistry development in a short period of time. And even beyond them....always interesting.

Walking around work today...it's pretty incredible how far their appeal and reach goes. Seems like EVERYONE has a spot for them. Wide-reaching.

Check Your Head and Ill Communication had similar effects on me (More so CYH but the Tibetan chanting stuff blew my mind on IC). That must have been an amazing show, they definitely evolved creatively like very few others in music. They might not have always ended up with the best results they took it seriously but still managed to make their records the funnest thing ever.

I, like many, was hoping he would somehow beat this battle.

If anyone wants to read it, I wrote some words about Yauch and the influence he and his music had on me and many others:
http://www.thisisbooksmusic.com/2012/05/04/obituary-adam-yauch-1964-2012

At a time as a kid when I (we) wanted to discover who we are and what our future holds, here was a group that kind of said "fuck it". You can be this but play "that" over there. You can be that, but play that music "here", there's no hatred here. Why should a damn Hawaiian kid get into "Cooky Pus"? Because it sounded cool and funny, and in the next three years, they just kept doing things... until they got to PAUL'S BOUTIQUE. It changed my life.

Anyway, I mention more stuff in my obituary linked above but... this one is truly heartbreaking.

Black people mostly didn't like the beastie boys where I grew up after 1990. I can specifically remember getting called 'BEASTIE BOY' in a derogatory manner by black people in high school.

But I think your post touches on something important and Im gonna talk some shit before this thread disappears.

On being white in hip hop.

Russell Simmons hated the Beastie boys and openly dissed them on tv. I remember seeing an interview where Russell literally accuses Adam Yauch of being talentless in front of the camera.

I'm paraphrasing but it was like 'Oh yah....so what do you do?'

Adam (shrug)

Russell 'What do you REALLY do'

Adam 'I'd like to think I'm an MC'

Russell (smirky eyeroll)

People forget that a year or two after License to Ill came out there was a huge backlash against them. By the time they released the video for 'Hey Ladies'...the general perception was that they were childstar has-beens grasping for a last-ditch effort. Lots of people called them a gimmick.

The most impressive thing about their career to me is how they went their own way. Def Jam are embarrassed about us now? We're not hip anymore? Let's go west and do our own thing with funk and disco records. Everyone ignored Paul's Boutique when it came out too.

Getting back to the racial angle....trying to develop a white identity in hop hop? I think of Vanilla Ice, Third Bass and the Beastie Boys.

Vanilla Ice tried to be black. We've all seen that amongst white hiphop fans. When confronted with someone like this....I'm too embarrassed to directly address it.

Third Bass condescended and pandered to black people. I watched an interview they did on Arsenio Hall recently....can't even articulate my reaction. Just shaking my head. These guys thought it was cool to be black and that's a real fucked up way of thinking. Again...we've all seen this type of white hip hop fan too.

Beastie Boys never pandered to anyone. No condescending neither. Take it or squeeze it. It's hard to articulate more clearly...but as a white hip hop fan...I can see what sickboi's saying. You can be white and love hip hop. Use it in your own art. Don't have to pretend to be black and don't have to apologize for being white.

I think Eminem has probably benefited from the beastie boys. I seen/heard some of his interviews when he was just becoming famous and he was clearly fronting in his accent/language. At some point in time he must of realized that was a dead-end street. But I'd suggest the way Em has handled his image in a racial context as a famous white rapper has been influenced by Beastie Boys. By embracing who you ARE and enjoying what you LOVE.

Edit: The Beasties are the WORST rappers to have such an impact on hip hop.

RIP to an MC I literally grew up. The Beasties are like your homie that's always there. You move away, develop a like, and discuss other artists more frequently, but when you come home, they're the group that's always waiting for you to bring back awesome memories.

I mean he grew up with those guys and they're the ones who told Rick Rubin to listen to his demo tape so it's easy to see. They gave so many ppl their start or support, plus were just warm ppl in general. I haven't heard anyone speak bad on touring with them.

I've been watching his videos ever since. I knew about that Idris Muhammad "To All The Girls" sample* but I never knew Shake Your Rump was that sample heavy. Even with the liner notes, haha. I like the way this guy has it all lined up and clean.

Good that they played tribute to them, 2 similar artists that had just as long careers but 2 completely different paths.

In response to Reply # 0

it took me until i was about 18-19 to get into the beastie boys, but i eventually got into "ill communication" and "check your head", then "paul's boutique". mca made some incredible, innovative, fun, and real dope music, and i think ll said it best talking about how the beasties' music and love for the artform (punk and hip-hop, music in general) transcended race and demonstrated the spirit of hip-hop and a craft based in the community. the ideals adam yauch represented in his life reflect that same spirit; the type of phenomenon that can be felt on a global level, without translation. it just hits .

it's tragic that mca had to leave us before the beasties' induction into the hall of fame, but his legendary music will remain here to enjoy, teach, and learn from.

you'll be missed around the world, mca.

peace.

Man I literally cried last week about this. I think they could be the only artist with a death hitting me that hard. When I discovered them in 94 (forth grade for me) I discovered hip hop and I believe I discovered who I was then.
