"The Dance Electric is one song Prince should not have given away"
Wed Sep-14-11 08:35 AM by MME

IMO. Because he sings it way better than Andre does. (If you've never heard Prince & the REvolution's rendition of the song than I guess this post would make sense to you)

edited to add the two versions

Andre's: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zze3oYwYu1E

Prince's: oops couldn't find it on YT

is amazing and you soon realize that St. Paul is just merely mimicking him note for note.

had he released that as opposed to say Around the World In a Day or Parade... he'd have another bonafide classic on his hands.

Actually the same can be said for the first two Time albums as well.
It's wierd hearing the versions with Prince on vocals cause then you realize he's in character.

Yeah Andre aint seeing dude.

Little Wendy's Parade is way more powerful on Charade.

My first response to "the legendary Mistermaxx"

Ok Maxx, you finally suckered me into this one (LOL).

That's actually a dope idea. I'm thinking you and I are about the same age, so you know what's up. Around that time, Prince had so many gems (released and unreleased) and he was trying to get as much music out as possible; thru his albums and side projects. "The Family" hands down is Prince's most perfected side project..hand down. Then he had his jazz/funk project w/Eric Leeds (Madhouse). He could do no wrong back then, but he never scaled down ATWIAD to all the best cuts. It was an uneven album..though I dug it.

Btw, I got a pretty crazy story with me and your mans Kells. Met him back in 92' at the Cotton Club in Chicago around the tme Honey Love was starting to bubble. Coolest cat you'd ever want to meet (at least back then anyway..). There's more to the story and I'll share it with you on the next post. You crack me up with your unyielding love for Robert! LOL

oh the best 6-8 cuts would have been tight IMO. on Paisley Park logo the family album is about the best thing he did and it didn't sound dated or half bake, however that being said his best Production to Me was with the Time first two albums and Shelia E's debut and Vanity 6. after that i can take or leave aside from some songs.

Madhouse was cool at the time, but after a minute it felt like Mike Hammer theme song background Music IMO.

the first madhouse album was ok after that i wasn't feeling much,, but back then he could put out and everything and it worked for a while.

feel free to share the R.Kelly story, look forward to that one. peace

those projects.

I still maintin that Roadside Garden, the original Cyrstal Ball, and the Dream Facotry was some of his best work.

The original Family album with him on vocals - same deal.

Just good stuff.

The Camille Stuff. SAme difference.

Now if we did get a wish list like that maxx... add
Another Lonely Christmas to that - long version and the original Raspberry Beret from the Dirty Mind Era (yeah it goes back that far)
and yeah. With you man.

But like everybody stressed though, the entire Family album shouldn't have walked way. I cringe at how St.Paul fucked up a set of perfectly great material with his voice.

I would've enjoyed the material more had Prince encouraged St.Paul to find his own voice as opposed to come across like a carbon copy.

The Prince and the Revolution version is about 4 minutes of song followed by 7 1/2 minutes of random vocals and screaming, accompanied by some guitar... which makes me believe that it was merely a demo...

check that 1999 album.

and those Time albums.

and, of course, all of those 12 inch singles w/their extended versions.

plus, all Andre did was replace his vox w/Prince's and chop off the instrumental section (is there a 12 inch extended version?). we hear the Rev on backup in his version.

fuck you.

I dunno if it sounded like Controversy to me but I see where your going. In the mix of the album tho it had a great feel.

River Run Dry produced by David Z was actually the one that he didn't produce and in it's original inception - pre Claire Fischer - was the one that really stuck out as a 80's song to me.

I don't know, man...As much as I think "Dance Electric" is that SHIT, it didn't fit the psychedelic rock-ish vibe of ATWIAD...

Really, Prince fumbled the ball by not putting "She's Always In My Hair" (a nod to Hendrix) on that album, instead of just making it a B-side...You replace "Temptation" with that song and now you are talking...

>he went overboard w/it.

"I Kind of liked it" (see De La Soul Is Dead)...

But on the real, the only truly BIG issue I have with ATWIAD is towards the end of that album...I dug the psych-rock shit on there for the most part...I think it's a logical bridge to Parade...I just think "Temptation" is Prince at his most over-indulgent...It (along with "The Ladder") turned what could have been a classic album into a good, uneven effort...

I do agree with you on "Screams of Passion" though...That would have fit very well on that album...But the ball was def dropped on "She's Always In My Hair"...I really believe that song represents a missed opportunity for Prince... But it was clear he wasn't taking a normal approach to promoting that album...One video? And Prince had to be forced to even do that shit...lol

So taking some of your suggestions and my own, this is how the album would have looked....

Side one

1. "Around the World in a Day"
2. "Paisley Park"
3. "Condition of the Heart"
4. "Raspberry Beret"
5. "Tamborine"

Side two

1. "America"
2. "Pop Life"
3. "Screams of Passion"
4."She's Always In My Hair" (long version)

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

for sure.

here's the great album, imo:

ATWIAD
Paisley Park
Condition of the Heart
She's Always In My Hair
Tambourine

Dance Electric
Pop Life
Raspberry Beret
Screams of Passion

America would be used as a b-side.
The Ladder & Temptation would remain in the vault.

fuck you.

because Andre is doing the best Prince vocal impersonation he possibly can on that track to the point I wonder if anyone in 1985 was ever fooled, but then again... it fits right in with the rest of A.C. (maybe reuniting with Prince was what Andre needed to GTFO(ff) some of those diversions he was taking on his 2nd album, it sounded like Knight Rider Season 3 And Later Music)

Andre's first album is damn near a classic to me, I hope it gets reissued properly soon.

The song Prince really shouldn't have given away was "Ice Cream Castles", it doesn't really sound like The Time at all, and I don't think it's often used in their live sets. The lyrics are 100% "Prince", singing about interracial love, and that whole neo-hippie vibe he was on in '85 or so.

Not only does the song not fit them AT ALL, you make it the TITLE TRACK and a single on an album that contains The Bird and Jungle Love?!?! Sadly, I wonder if it was done (by P) intentionally.
