In response to Reply # 2

liners turn roots albums into "questlove albums" and thus you guys now see my liner notes as a highlight instead of the music at hand.

and this isn't a "well we came up with this...." type album.

i can say we are doing something new with this UNDUN app that is inspired by this:

it's funny but i'd never thought of it this way until now. you're so right...liner notes shouldn't be the draw; the music should.

some down since the early to mid 90's, some around Phrenology and "The Seed" some since Fallon..

When you make albums, are you looking for an intersection where all these groups come together?

If so, where is that intersection on Undun?

thanks for stoppin in. Dont be a stranger, and feel better!

hmmmm.

really we start from square one.

i feel as though each album is perfect for the demo that grasps to it.

like i know tipping point fans that scoff at DYWM.

so i just feel like there is a small portion that appreciates the "big overall vision"

and then there will be a new batch that digs it.

i mean all the elements are there:

rhymes are ill

story is crazy

drums are banging.

i mean those are still my passing points.

but we do "twin" records so this is HIGOs darker twin album.

No more "traditional" style albums?
If so, will you forego making songs that don't "fit the story/theme" of upcoming album?
Maybe (in the future) do it JB style, put out "non-story" singles every so often, collecting them at the end of the year as a release?
Any plans for how the album will effect the live shows?
Malik B. on the album?
Will you PLEASE throw us some extra goodies that didn't make the album?
When I acronym-ically list The Roots albums, I'm to just use the letter U?
Have you heard from the Guess Who?
Can I put out a remix album and call it REDUN?

>No more "traditional" style albums?

we are cautious on moves we make now that we are older in the game.

and we find it easier to make moves with things that make sense.

"traditional" hip hop albums deal with

mc's- a non factor today. like as good as "clones" is. who is the person we'd be talking to today? the idea of the mc (sucker or authentic) is a done deal.

or club stuff, or drug stuff---i mean yeah having just discovered jzone a couple days back id love to make a smart ass album on that level. im not ruling it out. but we are just cautious as 40 year olds in presenting a definitive and clear statement. call it the need to be responsible or the need not to be "the old guy in the club" whatever the case we wanna roll with what is natural.

people who've heard the album are mind blown. so something is goin right

I pretty much had figured that was the case by now, though it still stings to hear someone 'on the inside' say it.

Few bad apples amongst a gang of fans who hold his/their work in the highest regard and he let the bad-apple minority dictate whether or not he should continue coming back here.

85% of the people on here are all over the Roots' collective nuts and that's why they're here; 10% are just regular music fans who still probably came here because of The Roots but can look at things objectively, 5% are just straight assholes and he let the 5% prevent him from coming back to the site he/they built.

Sad but true.

In response to Reply # 0
Thu Nov-03-11 11:09 AM by Joe Corn Mo

not that i'm a great drummer by any stretch of the imagination,
but i can't even figure out how they are hitting those tom drums
to make those back beats.

like the way the tom hits on "still in love with you?"
how did they do that?

if i hit a tom drum,
it just doesn't sound like that.
it sound so... soft? mellow? i don't even know the word for it,
but do you know what i'm talking about?

why do those drums blend so seamlessly into everything?

i mean like, i can understand, sort of... how
the funk brothers to get their snares to sound like that.

and i've read about how the engieers did tricks
to get the drums on "billie jean" to sound like that.

but i cannot, for the life of me,
figure out how a person can strike a tom drum,
and get it to sound like the stuff on
those al green records.

thoughts? lol

i'm intrigued about 'how much' of a concept album this is going to be... i haven't been reading the lyrics as don't wanna spoil it, but i'd be intrigued to hear about how strict a theme the album follows (after reading about the whole blu verse rewriting stuff). Also, where do you see 'storytelling' in the current arena of hip-hop lyrics? is it something that hip-hop needs to focus on more?

i'd be very interested to hear anything about any of the whole sorta concept/storytelling side a things.

looking forward to the album

39. "how "effortless" was the album to make?"
In response to Reply # 0

q-tip talked about how making midnite was "effortless"...i'm assuming meaning they were in a zone. like they could go on for days making nothin' but good stuff.

the roots are prolific and always make good stuff...in a "prolonged zone," if you will.

sooo, was it an "effortless" process?

or was it a detailed, painstaking, soul-searching, impossible, trial-and-error process like how reconstructing SMiLE was?

just curious, cuz y'all have been on a roll lately.

it realistically takes 2 years to make a roots album. which is why undun was started while i was still mastering HIGO (yes im on the next album right now as we speak.

the only guarantee i can say is we never turn in product we don't feel is grade A.

and to get there is painful.

phonte can weigh in on this one.

i mean i went through ish to (i got outvoted on "sleep" and my drums were ixnayed for the 11th hour demo version---which serves the song way better. "make my"'s coda went to hell and back cause riq wanted THAT to be the music instead but then it went nowhere.

yes it was dope. but not doper than the surprise of you hearing it the first time coming in the way it did.

as far as the lyrics are concerned.

EACH verse---matter of fact

EVERY verse was sent back to the ringer.

we'd hear a verse and rich (the bad cop in this scenario) is the voice of

"this line dont make sense....too many words here and you get off subject here and this over here....these last 5 lines aint happening...do it again.

phonte went through that 16 times for this "One Time" verse.

like i have a whole new respect for his work ethic.

cause by the time i was on my 7th redo for the same song i told riq and rich to kiss my ass and i quit for about a month and a half (i quit all the time during roots albums---illadelph/tfa i left for 3 months....and then i come back lol)

this marks the first time the words have been so scrutinized. normally the music takes a beating.

In response to Reply # 0

what is the roots' current relationship like with def jam? you keep coming back to put out more albums with them so it must be good on some level. are they overall supportive and enthusiastic or just hands off enough to let you go wherever you want to go artistically? what about that solo EP black thought was to put out on the label back in april?

some of collaborations on HIGO, my favorite album of last year btw, were apparent products of bands coming to perform on fallon. were any other guests drafted through this process? anyone you enjoyed jamming with during the making of this album that didn't make the cut?

when you conveyed the concept of the album to the guest emcees, were they all on board immediately, did they take some selling to, was it natural for them to work within the framework of the overall story? who was the most fun to work with in the creation of this album, and who was challenging?

with the more cinematic, occasionally orchestral sounding direction of recent roots albums, is it ever tempting to give jon brion or sufjan stevens another call to work on new material?

a lot of people have rightly pointed out and complained that black thought has been getting less mic time on the last few albums in favor of a more "community" (no NBC pun intended) approach. is this a conscious (again no pun) effort to set up those solo projects he has or to capture some of the mic chemistry he had when malik b was in the group?

who remain some music video directors you'd like to work with, perhaps on this album?

get well soon.

our new pres Barry Weiss (beats rhymes and life) lost his mind today when he heard it.

i got to the sweet spot i wanted.

which was basically

we make critically acclaimed albums....
you leave us alone.

def jam realizes it needs us just like they need rihanna. HIGO making robert christageu's number 1 on his year end list was a big deal to them.

i expect this album to make top 10 pazz/jop.

as long as they are in business and as long as we turn in superior product all is well.

Even though the jazz and r&b leanings are what made me a fan in the first place, I became more pissed at y'all's records when y'all didn't do "band" shit and you let the machines come in and do what y'all could've did as a band (i.e.: Phrenology).

As long as those days are FAR behind y'all, even if I don't like a particular album (*cough*HIGO*cough*) I'll still cop to support because I appreciate the art and sweat equity that goes into what y'all do.

Respect.

In response to Reply # 0

Which eventually got misspun as orchestral in the original press release?

While we're on the press release and trust me I mean this in the most sincere way, don't appologize by qualifying your career. Just do you and let the cards play as they must. I have a sense of what 'being appreciated' means to you, and I hope you realize and recognize that you are and will be even if it doesn't always seem that way. Your musical ethic is insanity and the body of work speaks for itself. I don't need to read a press release where you're making excuses why folk shouldn't look to The Roots to do like Wayne and Ye. Especially in a quote from you.

Not that you have to give a fuck what I say, but hopefully however you read it you'll recognize it comes from love and appreciation.

I love that shit so much. Is that you guys playing? it sounds more like a sample (not that I'd ask what sample it is), a tribute of some sort?

sorry for the random question

I hope you feel well soon.

AND...
I just want to remind you that that Roger Waters' narrative concept album Radio KAOS had narrative songs released only as b-sides. So don't rule out extra tracks on principle if you have any songs that didn't fit on the album and can release a single.

where making a 'regular' hiphop album is no longer interesting?

I literally grew up on DYWM/IH/TFA and for me, and I'm sure a lot of others, those albums opened up a whole new lane... a whole new sound. Basically shaped me for things to come (Soulquarians, Dilla) especially after seeing you guys live around that time.

When I listen to the stuff like the Sandwiches, I do hear you kind of re-capturing that sound, maybe more progressing it. But I was wondering why do you choose to not do more material like that?

I do have to say, and I mean this as a huge compliment, whenever I listen to stuff like that it sounds like y'all do it completely effortless, so I assume it's a lot less challenging to do something like that?

Also... I got a print of this I want to get over to you. How can we make that happen:

but ive also matured and grew as a producer:

ok take this sandwich for instance:

http://www.zshare.net/audio/957379303092bdc5/

(freebie on me ....shhhh)

now based on the "oh my god!!!!!" count (im rather embarrassed that im lettin yall see how much we're on each other's dicks and whatnot, but its rare you find some cats that love to play music with each other and be all amazed at the same time)

now this sandwich falls under possibly one of the GREATEST creative weeks we had at fallon (ice cube walked in shortly thereafter to rehearse straight outta compton w/ us)

but as diddy dope dope it apparently is...does it fall into the scheme of things for what Undun is?

nope.

does it fall into the scheme of things to ANYTHING in the marketplace now?

nope. (which is cool being as though ive made a living outside the reindeergames)

is it even what you can call a fully developed song?

nope (this is where i go into risky territory---i mean its a killer groove and a neck brace special number 12, but beyond that its not developed. no melody just a ruff idea.

and i wrestled with this idea before:

"man "double trouble" is dope how come it never got love outside the community we built"

and this will forever be the demons i battle everytime i create music:

its one thing to be naive and create from the gut ("mellow my man"....a song that means something to only older roots fans. this song gives them the excuse to " 'i was down with them before YOU were down with them' cheer in the audience position. its still entertaining but not THAT effective. we still do it so that we can justify history with the fans that will only consider us "organix to TFA"

so of course what am i saying here? now that i know wiser about the taste of america and its tolerance for songs do i just throw all types of clever songs away like that?

i dunno.

ive thrown scraps before and really haven't heard too much feedback on stuff:

let's go to Rising Down:

tradition in the sense of "meat and potatoes" hip hop? or traditional in the sense of "post dilla" hip hop?

cause i felt like "get busy" and "75 bars" were the HEAVIEST ELEPHANTS in our arsenal. i wanted to make some shit that made you wanna commit a 4th degree crime like yoke a kid in the face and take his halloween candy. now in the scheme of things where did it get us?

yeah riq got some props from kanye and mos, and some of yall bigged him up but i mean did it move mountains? or achieve anything out of the "i already know the roots are dope" cannon? nah.

but we did it and did it well cause ---well...we did it well.

as i type this now i get the feeling you are asking why dont we make the soulquarianesque flavor stuff that initially got us love in the first place.

1. always felt weird that the love we got on dywm was really based on filling a Tribe void. or a novelty tribe void ("look ma! they play!!!")

2. illadelph was wu tang to the bone and i am hella amazed NOONE called us out on that. MARS on clones? GHOST. riq on sections RAE all day!

maybe we filled a void after Liquid Swords or something. im not saying its not dope. but hardly a firm foundation to build a house on. it got us "oh they aint soft" props. we used it to get to the next level.

3. TFA *shrug* same thing. we Kanyed SV by taking their steeze on another national level before they had a chance to.....then you had on everyone and their mom having neo itis from 1998-2002 that by the time we came back it was too late to cash in on the trend.

i think our entry was perfectly timed because after nov 93 it was a wrap for tribe, and we were a nice substitute.

but when people REALLY REALLY REALLY get honest w/ themselves?

they miss Tribe.

so much they let us in the door to have fun.

and it took us 5 records to find our own ground so that we wouldn't be pegged as "post tribe"

LB took over shortly thereafter but even then there is the same dilemma. the Listening only made sense to the trickle down Midnight/Apart/Fantastic fans. ----which if yall were big in numbers like big enough to make a living off of? then psssh we'd rhyme over shit like this til the cows come home

http://www.zshare.net/audio/9574047001143c50/

so its like "what are we chopped liver quest?!!?

absolutely not. i still take into account of what yall think.

but for every TFA 2! request i got P4ers (yes i know, but we are just as much theirs as we are yours and i cant ignore this position)

http://i639.photobucket.com/albums/uu112/designerspotinc/DSC01133.jpg

always felt like The Roots were this position to about 9 different people pulling from all sides.

robert christgau's post lesterbang Voice crew tugs over here
okayplayers tugging over there
p4k tugging over there
new fans tyrna catchup
old fans tryna writeoff....

see where im goin?

i now make records under the guise that once the hype dies down and people really give it a FAIR listen.

they will indeed acknowledge us as one of THEE accomplished hip hop groups in history.

yeah i know we cant GOAT this and that cause we dont have HITS
and our influence is invisible so it really dont count
and its just blasphemous to put us over RUN, WU, Kast, De La, Tribe and others cause....

well cause its just wrong.

whatever the case....i dont care if its our 23rd album SOMEONE is gonna acknowledge our consistent grade A record making streak before i leave this earth.

THAT is my motivation.

we will never get our outright props. and on the low i hope we never do cause that is the shit that will keep me the obsessive music fanatic i am.

but as far as "traditional" hip hop.

i dont know if cats really know what they want from this.

riq has done far more "traditional" hip hop stuff than "straight up roots band" records yet i keep hearing "i wanna hear riq spit over samples" like *poof* suddenly THAT will allow him to get props,

i aint seen one Money Making Jam Boy OMG RIQ post yet (yes i lurk still)

maybe i should ask you:

is traditional hip hop a not well thought out hip hop album?
or is traditional hip hop an album not constantly reminding you how fucked up life is?
(and does that mean we made republican hip hop by just acting like shit was cool when shit was fucked up? cant be that cause im certain you consider mobb deep "traditional" and the shit them mofos talk about....is like dayum)
is traditional hip hop mixing my drums more synthetic like "push up your lighter" when i thought i nailed "book of right on" for HIGO?
is traditional hip hop NOT letting jim james sing dear god, despite the fact i never saw a Roots song make people cry more than that song?
is traditional hip hop album all riq and noone else? (sidenote: everyone's beloved TFA contains 14 cameos which the only difference was we didn't credit it on album like "adrenaline feat malik b, dice raw, beans") the one roots album we gave riq to the head was Tip and yall cried "booooring")

i mean what is traditional hip hop albums in 2011 with a bunch of 40 years old.

not saying that "oh i wanna make an album thats good for a 40 year old"

but i know im making what makes sense for us

which is a far cry from anyone else in this same position.

and once cats let 1999 be 1999 i feel only then can they respect us as artists.

trust me....

im tryna swallow this The Time 30th reunion album and not hold them to "What Time Is IT!?!?" standards.

which isnt what im asking for.

hell no.

for what it is...

UNDUN is THAT shit.

its just not post tribe.

that we will never be.

but damn if we wont be fucking excellent and in top form.

I constantly expound The Roots catalogue as one of the most consistent and progressive of all time.

I never want another "TFA" or "Game Theory" because there is no point.

Each new album is its own being in so many ways, yet fits perfectly into the fluidity of the catalogue.

I made a post earlier about the prophetic nature of Roots albums.

Look at Rising Down and HIGO in relation to the world today.

Please hang out here more often, we do really appreciate your presence and okayplayer. Its such a pleasure reading threads like this.

I really hope you make 23 albums.

Just do what you do and keep throwing them curveballs.

I love the Roots precisely because they don't just put out the same shit as their last LP. That's something to be proud of.

I mean regardless of 'post-tribe' not having enough commercial value in 2011, I don't feel you guys ever go for the obvious route either. And looking at the Sandwiches, I had the feeling that it always was a conscious decision (not to go 'post tribe').

Honestly, a traditional hiphop album probably doesn't exist in 2011. I see on a daily basis (at least in Amsterdam) how hard it gets to book straight up hiphop acts. Even for someone more established like Kweli the market seems to be shrinking. Someone like Riq will never get his fully deserved recognition with the way things are looking now.

I think at one point y'all definitely filled the void left by Tribe, but I also think that the main reason people still long for that sound is because you yourselves left another void by moving on. The question is though, what does filling that void get you? Apparently nothing but some props.

It's definitely good to get your own perspective on this. Thanks so much.

Not be be pedantic about it Just an FYI . The Nice and Smooth No Delaying nod was great. So was the Zappa track with the Morrissey hook. (And thank goodness I got a physical copy. Thanks Randy / Dan / Ginny / BJ)

(I think what some people might want is to hear you produce a Black Thought heavy project with looped samples and a drum machine. I don't know if it would be a Roots album necessarily - but it might be nice to hear. Because J. Period is good - but he doesn't have your sensibilities.)

And forget Pitchfork - they aren't Lester Bangs - they're just assholes - IMHO.

Plus, at some point the "life sucks" albums gets overbearing...then again the Roots are the only people in hip-hop doing them so it's a wash...

And it just made me realize something.

I try hard not to do it, but it's natural that when I listen to albums from other favorite artists/groups/whatever, to some degree there's an element of "ah Resurrection sounded so much better", or "why can't he just make an album like Illmatic again" or "he should've just stayed with that original Blueprint sound".

With The Roots, I've literally never thought that. I have my favorite Roots albums, I have my least favorite. But the thing is that I genuinely LIKE them all for one reason or another. I can't think of another artist or group that I listen to that doesn't have at least one dud. And I can't think of another artist or group that hasn't given me the "I wish this album sounded like ________" thought at least once throughout their career.

But with The Roots, even though Illadelph, Phrenology, TFA and Game Theory are my top 4 (my favorite changes fairly often), I never once listened to Tipping Point and thought to myself "shit I wish this sounded more like Phrenology", or listened to Rising Down and thought "why did they change up that Game Theory sound?".

So while I always knew The Roots were crazy consistent and one of my favorite groups/artists, realizing all the above brings it to another level for me. Credit to you all for continuously releasing high-quality material for 15+ years while never allowing your sound to get stale or repetitive, and never doing the same thing twice.

In response to Reply # 112

>i look back on them later and realize how good they are.

Yep. Agreed. Like I said, each album has reasons to love it.

>i
>love how no album is the same, even though it's tempting to
>want them to do a tfa 2 type record.

Yea I mean, like I said that's what is surprising to me, that I just realized that they are the only group or artist that I like where that thought has NEVER crossed my mind. They have almost been so good that they've trained me to treat each album as what it is, and that's an individual album that stands on it's own merits.

So impressive.

In response to Reply # 98

can someone hook up a reup cause I done done the zshare circular clicks dance three times now.

It seems to me that you've 'got over'. That's what the post details the most. So at this point why keep that sammich under lock and key. Why not hook up with frank or dan or whoever and just regularly release like everything? What are you keeping it for. Yeah do your official projects tc. but I don't see why you wouldn't just drop shit. You do it some every now and then, but I mean like shit... you have a productive week, put out the Productive Week EP. You can't tarnish your image at this point so there's no harm in it. Particularly for as you note the way your fan bas is dividing. You can still go for the successes with the album releases, but keep everyone else happy in the meantime. Someone who didn't like HIGO is still on board because of MMJB. I'm anticipating Undun but would be equally thrilled about another sammich release.

Shameless - I've been asking one question of you vor a few years now, nobody will ever ask it in an interview. It probably warrants an in-depth response.I'm not really doing journo these days but really do need this question answered, and you're the only one who can answer it. What do I have to do to get it answered?

madlib
big boi/outkast (since andre has no solo)
RZA
KRS-One
Premier
Roots

and then the rest of 'em (Dilla, Biggie, Paul, DJ Paul & Juicy J to round it out)

and if you notice, there's just Kast and KRS ahead of you as far as rap-heavy, the rest get by on producing crazy joint after crazy joint. so you're #3 in another sense.

And Mellow My Man is one of my all-time favorites of yours

(my rankings put Do You Want... #3 in your set)

so it kind of bums me out to see you say that song's only for old people

but after spending a year on OKP heavy I guess I can understand.

some fans are real fickle. maybe someday I will be too. hopefully there'll be a Roots album for me to hate on whenever that happens lol.

do you feel it will be more challenging to translate these songs into your live show, compared to your other albums? can you talk about some of the guest musicians you brought in and what they brought to the table? would you say that you and thought have the most to say when it comes to making decisions about albums, or is everyone equally involved?

While The Roots have been around forever and made some classic albums, do you think because of your move to Fallon, you guys might become..... "commercial"?

I mean I think you guys are the greatest band on earth (cause I'm truly a fan) but I could see this album blowing up *quadruple platinum* if all the songs are as good or better than "Make My" and due to your Fallon exposure.

BTW: I saw Fallon and the Roots on Silent Library...y'all just couldn't hold it in, could you?! LOL!

look at all the top 100 entries.
tell me what song on that chart resembles anything on our last 2 records.
"going commercial" sounds so 1988 lol.

for one to go "commercial" there needs to an established moral ground which clearly there is not in hip hop (actually unless im talking to a 1988-1997nite) actually the OPPOSITE is in effect now in which for those NOT trying to appeal to mindless masses are now seen as wack.

i know this isn't your disposition but i hear the occasional "roots sold out" from a blog or two which cracks me the fuck up. it just sounds caveman outdated, like someone literally in a time machine yell "sock it to em brother" or "gimme some skin" or "gimme 5!" or "power to the people!"---i laugh cause its like they didn't get the memo.

noone gives a fuck anymore about morals in hip hop.

for if they did? they'd abide by them (actually those who illegally download i see are the real sellouts)---but this is another story

anywho i think the main disposition was that we'd get lazy in making albums once we went late night.

i wanted to prove the total opposite to be true.

we now have more time to concentrate and develop good ideas.

im not worried about hits cause we were never hits based

im just concerned with making great albums.

Seeing as how the album tells a narrative, I was curious how a group goes about creating that.

For a single artist I could see them writing an outline of a story, and then creating songs to fit it. However for a group like The Roots where there's so many moving parts, it'd be cool to know how the ideas came together and what the process was.

Glad you came back to OKP for this, I missed these types of posts.

process starts with the track

now sometimes a track is made like "a track" for which we The Roots will take and redo it (look at "Get Busy" started off as "a track" then we went and replayed it"---that's how outside producers get stuff to us, if its a track that seems like we can "Rootsify" then we go with it")

or the track can just start from us (4 of the tracks were once "sandwiches")

now the process here is out of my hands.

there rich is the judge of the emotional weight (this having already established the concept of going backwards

song one-dead
song two-dying but dont know im dead yet, oh snap i am dead!!! wahhhhaa!
song three-someone kills me
song four- "got a problem nigga?....what?!?! what??!?!?!?....oh...you better walk away....so anyway yall like i was saying we shou--------
song five-work done. let's celebrate a lil bit. but just for a lil bit
song six- its a dirty job but somebody has got to do it and a closed mouth dont get fed. even though im haunted by the actions that got me here
song seven- live like an animal. die like an animal. but life goes on.
song eight- am i my brothers keeper? nah dukes. this is a business. sorry. but you had it coming to you.
song nine- i hate being put in this situation, but now i gotta "handle something" and i gotta do what i gotta do. even if that mean an ICU...
song 10- im all business. and unlike these scumbags. im rising outta this mess somehow someway
song 11-14
a) nightfall. time to retire.
b) sleep
c) nightmares haunts
d) prepares for new day and whatever challenges that come forth/abrupt awakening.

this is a rough chart followed (actually we wanted a strict 10 so that way we wont dwell to long telling a narrative twice.

when you get Undun this could be a good cheat chart for you.

we wanted to Tarrintino it so that his death is first and his morning was last.

i was never a lyric guy, for if i was Riq and i woulda been fighting after Organix's "Im Out Deah"

rich went hardcore on mofos. and im shocked tariq welcomed the coaching. i was amazed he was so open to coaching.

i was like "rich if he "im from the city where"'s me one more time imma crash this car"

so being as though Rich is the ONE dude that you are glad said "nah that's wack" and you respect it you go back and redo it. (which leaves me headscratching about Blu's remarks)

he made sure that every line made sense and they stuck to the script.

18 years of watching and learning has served them well.

its not cost efficient to bring them all on the road (we are already 9 deep) so i guess if we were in a time period with a bigger budget then perhaps things would be different.

it has to make sense. him singing on HIGO makes sense. other songs notsomuch. as far as "go left" being as though young money is ruling the status quo, i can't go no more opposite "left" than im going right now. but "just have thought sing" aint gonna change much the perception of the group. he sang on HIGO and its like "yeah the Roots did something cool...so what"---

im just saying there is no suggestion you are going to pose that is gonna turn shit around until you find half a million of people w/ your taste (assuming you still buy product) that agree with you)

im with you 12 fold.

this is all i can say: all black geniuses have psychological problems and are prone to self sabotaging.

my relationship with erykah is like liz lemon's to jenna on 30rock. its like im purposely telling her the opposite just to get her to do the right thing.

d and i are arguing again. i told him this album is finished and you are too scared to release it for some unknown reason (the pressure of being "the next one" bothers him) and you will do anything to hide.

lauryn same thing. lives across the street from riq, crazier than a cat with rocking chair abuse syndrome.

I mean take the black out of that and its probably still true. But....I gotta wonder. I almost made a post today "What if D' was on Motown in the 60's". Coincidentally you just mentioned the Motown machine up above. These cats... could they hang. Could they bust out the factory made hits for three projects while doing the motown revue six months out of the year before they got the opportunity to express themselves as artists? Ionno. I don't think they could, and that makes me question something.

he'd be marvin. a black genius troubled who found an early exit.

imma say something fucked up but there is truth behind it:

steve gets a pass cause he was blind, so the novelty of his craft is amazing to us

like a toy in front a baby playing peek a boo.

course he gets older and imagines rose colored glasses on record (other side of this is steve pulling a 50/50 using his "genius" and position to get some ass. a game STILL going on to this day. not saying there is anything wrong with "game" but mofo knows we are vulnerable to him cause we have a soft spot for him.

but if he were seeing?

he'd be a jimmy ruffin rap.

erykah is wanted for vh1 divas (im curating) and already she is talking herself outta it.

i think this is a good look for her to do a non BET event to show people she did something besides On and On.

Are you referring to his death here or something prior to that. Just wondering the "early" part. D' has two albums and a coupl joints on comps/soundtrack's. That's it. That's 'early' Marvin... not so much unless you're talking about something else.

>imma say something fucked up but there is truth behind it:
>
>steve gets a pass cause he was blind, so the novelty of his

ehhhhhhh... i dig what you're saying but....

"Stevie Wonder is a musical genius!!"

I mean yeah blind novelty is one thing, but Stevie was far more than just that. It's been said here before but to reitterate, Stevie and then Duke in the realm of AMERICAN composers/songwriting/instrumentalist players. There's no he's blind pass in that assessment.

>course he gets older and imagines rose colored glasses on

OH SHIT!! You just said some shit which hould not be testafied to right there but... uh yeah. Least he ain't let it negatively affect his music tho right?

>but if he were seeing?
>
>he'd be a jimmy ruffin rap.

Ionno. I will admit that he probably was kept afloat by a factor of this. IE all his albums weren't gold and he coulda been done away with by the label many times but the novelty of him and his relationship to sticking with the label kept hem cool. But that has nothing to do with his genuine genius, nah meen?

>course imma through lauryn under the bus. but this applies to
>all of em.
>
>
>they worry about the next man coming and ruining shit.

"Ain't the devil happy... ha ha ha haha haha!!"

Honestly I just don't get this shit. I believe you but the shit just seem counter productive. Make music. When you're done that make more music. Someone makes music more popular than you, guess what, you can still make more music. Folk didn't like ya last single, guess what you can still make more music. Going back to the Moton thing, folk forget just how many flops they produced. Why? Because they didn't let the flops stop the machine. They didn't let that new disco crave stop the machine. They didn't let them working class artists touching the soul of people stop the machine. They just kept churning out the music. I want to see that today. I mean shit the business side of things are to shit. But with it so is the cost of production and packaging which is the major cost associated. We're talking established artists with strong bases here. Just keep putting shit out, yall' be good.

Nah it doesn't read cold. It reads like words from the one cat that watched the game and found the right niche when they realized what they dreamed of for it wasn't going to happen. While everyone else is so caught up in their fantasies about what should or could be they can't escape their present.

throw on a doom mask, wear a girdle (d or e), get a stunt double- do what you gotta do for your insecurities... but making/releasing music would've satisfied what we call a 'fanbase' in this post-purchase era of music...

i'm actually listening to Voodoo as we speak...and the D'Angelo comment hurts my heart. this dude is a GREAT singer, man. like Marvin, Al level, imo. i can't fathom why he is torturing himself like this. the joint you leaked a while ago where he's barely even mouthing words is killing a lot of stuff out here. and this guy won't even put anything out.

smmfh.

i'm glad to know that even though he isn't putting anything out that he is INDEED working.

smmfh again.

that's gotta be frustrating for you.

anyway...this place ain't that bad, after all is it? thanks for the insight for real.

In response to Reply # 130

I don't have any real expectations for one, given how things are with D, and what I imagine would be a difficult task in getting everyone together long enough to make an album, but I do keep a sliver of hope because if it ever did happen I assume it would be incredible.

And in regards to what you was sayin earlier, about y'all's legacy, I can't think of another act in hip-hop that has been more consistent than The Roots. Some albums have been better than others, but y'all have never put out an album that's "supbar", no duds. It seems like everyone else has put out at least one wack album. There's no way ya'll ain't GOAT, universal recognition be damned. Whether people recognize it or not, The Roots do deserved to be mentioned with Run, de la, Wu, Kast, Tribe, PE, etc. I know they all got hits, but the talent, the discography, IMO is on the same tier.

One final thought, does BT get a lot of offers for guest verses? An emcee of his caliber would get more features, or at least I would think. I wonder, if he ripped a Jay-Z track, how far would it go towards gaining some more fans/attention/credit.

*Deep Sigh*

God, I wish those of us that love and support this man's music knew what exactly has him so shook?!?!? Does he not know that their are people out here who are genuine fans and miss his contribution to music!?!?!? Not to mention who have waited patiently and impatiently for his return...

I mean I guess to a degree I can understand the pressure that he's under (although a lot of it I'm sure is self inflicted)...but fuck it, just do u, fam! It's not gonna be any different than what he went thru with "Voodoo"...there are people that are gonna get it and those who aren't! Just concentrate on gettin your life together and make music that feels good to u and the rest will take care of itself!

Peace

>fear rules everything around them.

this celebrity gossip, reality show obsessed culture that we live in that cannibalizes artists to the point where the artists fear even doing anything, lest they draw the wrath of tabloids and their readers

of course i wish the artists weren't afraid and could be strong enough to deal with whatever comes from their self-expression, but sadly, the vicious public makes that really difficult.

Or an examination of a lifetime. Your post #133 has me curious because it reads as though it's more of the former.

I find the lifetime examination more interesting. Like, what was Redford's tipping point? What moment(s) within his life placed him at the crossroads? I'm excited by the prospect of hearing how a kid goes from being a kid to a criminal. I just don't see how we get there by studying the criminal's rationale.

Should I only expect a 45 minute show? Will this be theatrical?

I don't think I'll get much of an answer here...

This is like peeking at the gifts under the tree, I dont wanna do it, I'm just so excited...

One real question I wouldnt mind an answer to though..

I've seen you guys perform somewhere around 25 times now, should I expect a traditional Roots affair?

Have you ever heard of the CunninLynguists? They've been making excellent narrative albums for years now. "A Piece of Strange" and "Oneirology" are two of my favorite albums ever. Im excited to see how undun stacks up against them, although it sounds like it will be more focused and lean than the CL albums.

i'm sitting my ass in this post now for about two hours and every single second got me hyped more and more for undun. i don't know if this is still held alive by quest, but if so i got a question (not undun related, cause i can't think about anything else i wanna knew that hasn't been said): are there any plans on another collab with john legend ? cause i loved wake up as much as any roots-solo-joint ? or other collab-plans ? beside that betty wright-thang
thx and love from germany

Is this how you always pictured Undun? Or did it kind of snap for you during recording?

And considering that, what weren't you able to accomplish with this album? Where do you see flaws?

How did that particular photo come to be chosen?
And what's the meaning behind the cover?
