Those idiots on the right are gonna demonize the Roots, after their NASCAR brethren booed Michelle Obama (or as Limbaugh says "Moooshelle Obama") and called her "uppity." What a bunch of fascists.

I'm hoping NBC doesn't bend to the right and fire the Roots on some kneejerk bullshit, but I do hope this leads to some kind of Fishbone renaissance.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/11/22/the-roots-michele-bachmann_n_1107731.html

NEW YORK -- Jimmy Fallon's house band The Roots appear not to be fans of Republican presidential contender Michele Bachmann.

As Bachmann strode on to the stage for an appearance on Fallon's "Late Night" early Tuesday, the show's band played a snippet of a Fishbone song called "Lyin' Ass Bitch."

The song begins with a distinctive "la la la la la la la la la" refrain - the only words audible before Bachmann, smiling and waving to the audience, sat down. The song itself, about a relationship gone wrong, isn't political.

This will cause "controversy" for about 5 minutes. Bachmann is rapidly becoming a footnote to the 2012 Republican Presidential circus: she's not a serious contender a la Gingrich or Romney, and Perry and Cain have been stealing her sideshow-esque thunder with their various antics and gaffes. Her campaign might try to rile it up a bit, but even the right wingers won't ultimately give a shit; she's not a serious contender, it's in their best interest to just get her to away quickly and start removing some of the lunatic fringe so that their supporters can get behind Gingrich/Romney/(Perry?)/whoever and try and get momentum going.

Long story short, don't nobody give a fuck about Bachmann.

In addition, why call a woman, who is running for President, a lying ass bitch in jest on national television? I don't get it. I know they did not say the words, but it was implied.

I am not a fan of Bachmann at all and I do feel like she has lied about various things. But I am not willing to call her a bitch. That is just me.

What does it matter? She's the lone FEMALE candidate in the Republican field...We can loathe her all day (believe me...I do...lol)..But that's the point that's going to be made (and that is at the moment) by critics of the Roots in this instance...I think both of you are looking at it too much from a political angle...

Let's not play coy...lol

I for one don't find anything horrific about those dudes playing the song...It was played without the lyrics for a reason...It was snarky and kinda clever...

But I'm a dude...I'm sure there are women out there thinking differently on some, "Why you gotta play a song with bitch in the title with the only female Presidential candidate???"

Sometimes it's not about what you actually say...It's what people perceive that can cause greater headaches...

Though I'm sure NOBODY will be mad about the free publicity this has won the show (and undun)

There is NO way Jimmy can fire The Roots, though. Even if NBC wanted that, it would be cutting off the nose to spite the face.

Just thinking about it made me uncomfortable.

If they do, hopefully it's one of those non-apology apologies ("we're sorry if anyone was offended").

People can call Bachmann irrelevant (which she is, in the national picture) but she still curates an idea of intolerance and sometimes even hate for "the other side." With all of the whining and complaining about the liberal media bias being magnified by people like her with their seeming quest for extremism and the unfortunate scenario of the loudest getting the most attention, it's kind of relieving that someone (on a rather large stage) finally said something in her opposition. Sure, it wasn't the nicest or most "PC" way of saying something, but I'm kind of thinking that the high road has seen enough traffic from our side in recent years.

I mean, besides the sentiment that she's a compulsive liar being right on the button.

THIS!!!!

I understand why Obama has to take the high road, because he is representing all Americans. But regular people on the left are generally taking the high road to no avail. It's time we spoke up, not just the far left, but regular folk and call out these crazy extreme right idiots.

Might be too late for that...I hope the guys do some damage control before this shit really snow balls...Now they have Democrats commenting on it...Remember folks...Any fallout that we will see from this won't be about politics...It's all about gender...I for one don't want to see these cats get buried over something so silly...

From the New York Daily News...

http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/dailypolitics/2011/11/the-roots-filet-michele-bachmann-with-fishbone

"Rep. Nita Lowey said in a statement, “The choice of song to introduce Michele Bachmann on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon last night was insulting and inappropriate. I do not share Michele Bachmann’s politics, but she deserves to be treated with respect. No female politician – and no woman – should be subjected to sexist and offensive innuendo like she was last night. The Roots, Jimmy Fallon, and NBC should apologize.”

But I suppose her and her husband damaging the lives of homosexual individuals through oppressive reform is ok. Fact of the matter is that she's a crazy lying ass bitch. This is true. WE all know this. People say this constantly off-camera. Playing a song that implies it without mouthing the words is not an act to me that justify punishment. People need to get over it. And this shouldn't be used as an opportunity for pseudo-feminist opportunists to try to put the "disrespectful to women" spin on it, because I think Bush is a lying ass bitch too. And so is Mccain, Herman Cain, that football coach that touched those little boys at Penn. State and a whole bunch of other niggas.

Glenn Beck reminds me of Joe McCarthy post-people realizing he was insane.

Sad, in a way.

Hilarious in all others.

Anyone hear that Easter thing he did earlier this year about jesus over side A of Dark Side of the Moon?

He's like a street performer. Straining to get that quarter.

Mildly annoying. Completely harmless.

http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2011/11/jimmy-fallons-drummer-grounded-for-bachmanns-bitch-song/

The drummer for the house band on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon apologized sort of for his decision to play Lyin Ass Bitch when Rep. Michele Bachmann appeared on the talk show Monday night.
The performance was a tongue-in-cheek and spur of the moment decision. The show was not aware of it and I feel bad if her feelings were hurt. That was not my intention, Ahmir Questlove Thompson said in a statement.
As Bachmann, congresswoman and GOP presidential contender, walked across the stage to sit next to Fallon Monday night, house band the Roots played a refrain from the song written by Fishbone.
Though the lyrics refer to a woman as a slut trash can bitch, the band sang the la, la, la of the refrain.
The bands drummer sent a tweet prior to the show clueing viewers in on the song choice, writing: late night walkon song devotees: you love it when we snark: this next one takes the cake. ask around cause i aint tweeting title.
Later, he retweeted a fans reaction: perfect entry song for her.

Thompsons initial tweet came prior to show making air, but after it had been taped earlier that evening.
Neither NBC, Late Night or Fallon himself would comment officially on the controversy .
Around noon Tuesday Fallon tweeted, @Questlove is grounded.
Thompson is a known supporter of President Obama and has contributed to his campaign. His Twitter account features a photograph of the drummer with the president.
Earlier Monday, Bachmann was asked on NBCs Today show whether she believed she had been treated unfairly by the media because she is a woman.
Sometimes you wonder about that, she said. I have no way of knowing.
A spokesman for Bachmann did not immediately comment, but a colleague in the Congress came to her defense.
Rep. Nita Lowey, D- NY, called the song sexist.
I do not share Michele Bachmanns politcis, said Lowey, but she deserves to be treated with respect. No female politician and no woman should be subjected to sexist and offensive innuendo like she was last night.

With a rusty-screwdriver even.

He regularly compares Obama and countless other Democrats to Adolf Hitler on a daily basis. Compare the president to someone who killed MILLIONS and was out to conquer the world, and hey, it's fair political comment, not "hurtful." But call Bachman a bitch and you're ranting and raving about how it's over the line. The guy can lick my fucking balls.

Beck is a crazed, wack job-level, idiot diversion who deserves to be locked in a closet with a bucket of piss...

He's not propelling this story...And he's not the reason why the Roots are catching hell...Beck is the last person people should be talking about...He's a joke...

In other words, Beck's past racist behavior is moot in regards to the Roots' late show shit storm...

If I was the Roots I would prepare to write an apology letter directly to Bachmann (or at least reach out to that loon)...Don't laugh....It sounds crazy, but you have to understand what's about to go down...It's about to get CRAZY for Quest and the boys...

The Roots' Michele Bachmann Intro: Jimmy Fallon Apologizes For 'Mess'

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/11/22/jimmy-fallon-apologizes-for-roots-michelle-bachmann_n_1108996.html?ref=entertainment

Seeking to quell growing criticism and public attention, "Late Night" host Jimmy Fallon has apologized for his house band's understated musical attack on Rep. Michele Bachmann on Monday night.

"I'm honored that @michelebachmann was on our show yesterday and I'm so sorry about the intro mess. I really hope she comes back," Fallon wrote on Twitter Tuesday night.

When Bachmann, who appeared as a guest on Fallon's show, walked across the stage to take her seat next to the host's desk, The Roots played the opening of a song by Fishbone called "Lyin' Ass Bitch."

While the audience only heard a "la la" refrain, the message was sent. Before the show, the band's drummer, Questlove tweeted, "aight late night walkon song devotees: you love it when we snark: this next one takes the cake. ask around cause i aint tweeting title."

Earlier on Tuesday, Fallon tweeted, "@questlove is grounded."

. . .but, c'mon. . .

Did Ed Murrow ever apologize?

(answering myself: no and he shouldn't have)

His attacks were much more meaningful and emotional. Granted, a bit more well-articulated. But nonetheless scathing.

Take the "bitch" part out and you get the summarized version of what he was saying to McCarthyism.

I mean, it's hard to imagine we actually had even crazier elected officials in this country than Bachmann.

This country has become more conservative-leaning in its "political-correctedness" to its own detriment.

Joe McCarthy whipped the country into a paranoid fury before post-internet mass media was a thing and even he had his detractors.

I, for one, find it comforting that a lunatic like Bachmann can get knocked down a few pegs albeit, in a less than desirable fashion. But, even then, she's not even a likely contender for president anyway. I say, knock her down, if for nothing else than a reality check. She has become a laughing stock of the nation. In the case that she's unaware, this is the reality that she needs.

Questo, I'm sure, will gladly take the fall for the perceived "liberal bias" if it means getting idiots like her out of public office.

I wish they didn't do it. They didn't think this one out. Here's the clip:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqeVjopXLWI

It's just rude and sleazie to me. "thank u for `oming on our show U I appre`iate u being here" and kisses and embra`e while plaing 'lieing ass bit`h' on the slie?

An obs`ure song from a non-mainstream band....I'm thinking it's an inside joke that got outted and probablie wasn't designed in the thoughts that it would be widelie understood.

But it's a 'dinner for smuks' thing. And when the smuks find out what u're up to....u failed. And it looks kowardlie. Making fun of people unbeknownst is highly overated. Not very honourable.

I think it's a mistake....wouldn't disrespkt ? if he desides to apologize though. I kall it....being a little too klever klever and misjudging if an inside joke is gonna stay inside. Also...not seeing how the joke was gonna pla/ out. ie...Jimmie's warm welkome while the song is pla/ing. I kan see how it `ame off a little different than probablie intended.

To me....a semi-honest mistake. Easilie overlookable though.

Hopefullie...it all just dies down. Tough move for ? and I'm feeling for him. Kan't kall it a koinkidink. Just gotta hope it dies off and Fallon's let off the hook.

or "two-facedness" of the attack

Like, Beck makes a lot of ignorant attacks on people, but he does it straight up... even those dumb NASCAR rednecks who booed Michelle O made sure there was no doubt about their feelings.

I'll admit that it feels kinda.... I dunno, disingenuous... to have Bachmann on the show, with Jimmy smiling and laughing and playing word-association games with her so that she walks away thinking she had a great time and everybody was so nice, but on the low, they're clowning her in a secret code without her knowledge.

I agree with you somewhat, it's sort of the equivalent of flipping someone off while you pretend to scratch your forehead. But they definitely get props from me for having the balls to do something, instead of sitting across from someone you dislike and playing nice. I don't think I would've been that brave.

Apologies have since been made, looking forward to moving on.

by it's nature...to disrespect people who are not in your presence while you are disrespecting them is by nature "sneaky" and not "straight up". Sitting on the radio or the tv and talking about people who are not there to confront you is not a straight up attack... If you straight up....say it to the person...in their presence or in some venue where you can be challenged and confronted on what is being said.

Michelle Bachman was right there when the Roots played that song. It's not like they did a concert and said, "this one is dedicated to Michelle Bachmann"

right...and I don't think Jimmy Fallon knew about this before hand....and even if he may have, he wasn't in on the planning.

the other thing...this wasn't a general diss....it was a specific one.... Michelle Bachmann's claims that the so-called forefathers of the country fought hard to end slavery and fought for all Americans to be equal is an agregious lie. I mean if she was in Germany and claimed that the Nazi's fought hard to free the Jews....she could be charged with a crime for simply making the statement...

so the playing of the that particular song was more than applicable to her.

Nicely done Quest...

No one is beefing about the "lying" part of the diss, though...Hell, it could be said that Bachmann is more of a moron than a liar (I think Palin is both...lol)..

I think we as men are missing the entire point...It's the word "bitch"....

That's what a lot of folks are taking issue with, not playing a song that has "lying" in the title...Trust me...this shit would not be catching this much traction if that was the only issue...

the connotation of playing that song was very specific, and if that was what Quest and them wanted to communicate, then they are taking ownership for the connotation...

if that's what they intdended...then they can stand on what they did. Maybe some wouldn't have done it...but they made the decision to do it, and that's it...

it wasn't flagrant...it was subtle...but specific..

I have no problem with it. This woman has been on the public stage saying many very offensive things over the last few years. When you are a public figure...you have to expcect people to form opinions about what is being.

my main problem was with afkap trying to "legitimize" what Glen Beck does by framing it as a fair "straight up" discourse, when it's the exact opposite..

if you disagree what the Roots did..fine, but you ain't got to misrepresent what Glen Beck does just to be critical of what the Roots did.

My comment to Afkap was about Glen Beck. 'kap made a false assertion about the nature of what Glen Beck does. I felt it needed to be addressed.

I agree with you...but Quest made the decision that doing this was worth it...it was applicable...

I'm not about saying the B word just for saying its sake....but I am for Hip hop..music...art...and really people in general being bold and making statements that require courage. You know they put their regular paying jobs on the line to do this.... I find it somewhat admirable in that sense.

when someone goes out of pocket with something regardless of the consequences to themselves, I respect that..even if I don't agree with their sentiments.

and really....this was pretty tame..I'd say what Letterman said about Palin's daughter was way worse.

Man... You will do ANYTHING... twist up reality into so many strange shapes just to contradict me, huh?

Whether or not you are physically present, if I say "Warren, you are an annoying dickwad who stalks me across the boards," it is a straight-up statement because I have left you with no doubt regarding my feelings about you.

On the other hand, if we met at an OKP RE and I was acting all buddy-buddy with you while secretly making faces behind your back... that shit is sneaky and two-faced.

I think any adult with a functional moral compass could see this.

"Like, Beck makes a lot of ignorant attacks on people, but he does it straight up"

you were confronted on this. Your response does not address what you said about Glen Beck. So unless you are going to speak on that, don't waste your time.

You characterized a person who has never confronted ANY of the people he has lied or disrespected ...as being "straight up". Talking about people on the radio, and the TV...with not only the object of his comments, or anyone with a different point of view to challenge what is being said is the exact opposite of coming at someone straight up.

like I said....disagree with the Roots doing this all you want, but do not try and give Glen Beck props for going at people straight up when all he does is purposely say things he knows he will never be challenged on.

I said that if Glenn Beck does not like someone, he insults them directly. He makes it clear that he is not a fan.

He does not cosy up to them and pretend to be friends while talking about them behind their back.

(I mean, he might do that in personal life, I dunno... but in terms of his political/entertainment career, he calls a spade a spade)

If you can't understand--AS A MAN--why this is less disingenuous than stealth-dissing someone while giving them impression of being cool with them, then you're more bitchmade than even I could have ever imagined.

Even Malcolm X addressed an issue similar to this, talking about how he prefers Southern whites to the Northern liberals because at least the peckerwood will straight-up call you a nigger as opposed to the liberals who will pretend to respect you to your face and talk the same dirty shit when you're not around.

insulting someone on the radio or the TV when that person is not around is not insulting them directly. Insulting someone with no one around to challenge what is said is not insulting them directly.

you sir are wrong.

>

nor does he say any of those things to that person, or to anyone who will challenge what he says.

Call a spade TO a spade..then you are being direct. The political right is full of people who cannot support their points of view when in the same company as the object of their scorn. But look on the political Left and you see constant attempts to engage the other side in debate of the issues. The right cannot do that because their views are based on lies, and juvenille rhetoric.

Glen Beck is the epitome of the crazy cowardice on the right. Hannity too. You'll never see them put themselves in a situation to defend their views against those who they are attacking. Ever.

then instead of Glen Beck, use as an example a person who actually speaks TO the object of their scorn in that person's proximity...

I almost wrote this earlier today in the hopes this wasn't going to escalate, but it appears we've reached that point.

This is the only thread in this forum where people are discussing this issue, and I do NOT want this thread derailed by y'all getting into your usual argument. Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion, and I respect both of y'all. But I'm not gonna allow 50 more back and forth responses like this.

So please, if you want to continue this, take it to the inboxes. Thank you.

There are various factors in when 'making fun of someone on the sly' is somewhat acceptable.

For one...there should be a certain level of expectation that they SHOULD know or COULD know what you're getting at. There is no reasonable expectation that Bachman should be familiar with a Fishbone album cut from 1986 or whenever. Leaving her with no way of responding which is not fair. For example...playing 'Bomb Iran' for Mccain was cool with me.

But this one is just not honourable. Immature kid's stuff. And it's made worse because in the analogy above...the OKP RE would have to be hosted at AFKAP's house and he would have had to invite Warren as well....Making it even more immature/two-faced.

...running for President right now. The falsehoods she spreads every time she speaks are kind of mind-blowing. So ?uest and them were showing their disapproval in a way that they normally do. Some people boo the first lady when they see her, some ?uest uses music as his weapon, just like he always has. Hell, they did something similar (though clearly not as blunt) when John McCain was there. McCain "got" it. As some have said, my main problem with it is that he so clearly called his shot before-hand, making it less "clever."

Two wrongs (or in Bachmann's case a number of wrongs) don't make a right.

I don't agree with her politics whatsoever, but I don't support calling her a "bitch" on the sly. No more than I would want Michelle Obama called that. On those on the other side feel just as negative about her.. for some reason.
I have a feeling that the indulgence to be snarky and witty may not work out in the band's favor. I hope NBC rides this out with them.

You thinking too politically about this one Doc....Being liberal or conservative is not even the issue...

The issue is whether or not such a song played during Bachmann's walk in can be viewed as disrespectful to women....That trumps everything...

The politics are just a smoke screen.....

first offFuck Glen Beck.

That guy is a complete idiot and is so beyond sanity at this point he shouldn't even be allowed to speak into a microphone.

secondI am ALL for freedom of speech and being political in music and cracking jokes on candidates and whatever else.

BUTmy issue is this;

If the idea of being slick about the music you play for people to walk out toDON'T TELL EVERYONE YOU'RE DOING IT!

I could go on about how juvenile this whole thing is with people tweeting and giggling and then apologizing but I won't go into depth.

That will only take the focus off of the issue that should be a non issue and an inside joke if people didn't feel as though they needed to broadcast their 'cleverness' so that others will acknowledge it.

Not to mentionthey purposely edit the word "bitch" out of their albums.

For those who think this is a game, think again...If Jimmy and the Roots are smart, they should just suspend Quest a few days to keep the dogs off of NBC's and the Roots' back...Don't give these bastards the satisfaction of chasing the Roots off a great gig for good...Because that's what some media people are now getting at...And that would be a shame...It's chess not checkers folks...

Huffington Post

Michele Bachmann has spoken out and demanded an apology for the song played by the Roots, the "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" house band, when she was introduced as a guest Monday night. Bachmann called the song, "Lyin' Ass Bitch" by Fishbone, sexist and a sign of Hollywood's bias.

She was unaware of the significance of the song's title at the time, she said, but was later angered to hear its meaning.

"I think the point is," she told Fox News's America's Newsroom, "if that had been Michelle Obama who had come out on the stage, and if that song had been played for Michelle Obama, I have no doubt that NBC would have apologized to her and likely they could have fired the drummer, at least suspended him, none of that happened from NBC and this is clearly a form of bias on the part of the Hollywood entertainment elite but it’s also I think it’s sexism as well."

The First Lady was booed by fans at a NASCAR race at the Homestead-Miami Speedway on Sunday, for which the racing circuit later apologized.

Questlove, the band's drummer who tweeted about the song before he played it on Monday, gave a semi-apology to ABC News on Tuesday, saying, "The performance was a tongue-in-cheek and spur of the moment decision. The show was not aware of it and I feel bad if her feelings were hurt. That was not my intention."

As for Fallon, who apologized Tuesday night and said he hoped that Bachmann would return to the show, the Minnesota Republican was forgiving.

"I am hoping to be able to speak to Jimmy Fallon today," she said. "I don’t have anything against Jimmy Fallon, I love him, he’s a kick, it was a great opportunity to be on the show, I’d love to go back again."

yeah lady.... That song wouldn't be played for Michelle Obama.

if that cap fits.....

if people like Bachman were held accountable for their lies, disrespect and the false claims they've made....you wouldn't need the roots to do this. But the right can make whatever claims they want without being challenged aggresively and disgraced publiclly when it's deserved.

so what?

This is 2011....we don't have to step aside when a white woman walks down the street..

I really don't care how it looks...and obviously Quest didn't either. Which is all the more reason why I respect the move.

You really think I'm talking about some "don't look a white woman in the eyes" shit...ha!...U know me better than that, homie...

There's a lot of angles to this...There's the "hip-hop" angle, there's the race angle...

But the angle that KILLS everything is the female angle...And that's the point I'm making here...

You see, if Quest and guys really wanted to pull this off in a more "chess" like manner they could have simply played Henry Rollins' "Liar"...Or how about "Don't Speak Liar" from We The Kings...Or how about Beyonce's "Beautiful Liar?"

U see where I'm going with this?

The B word gives the other side too much to run with...It's a license to say, "Hey, fire that band....they are sexist assholes..."

That's the issue...Don't ever give the other side a boneheaded opening....

I see you point...I do. I'm just saying that I don't believe that because of how it looked from the "female angle" that means they shouldn't have done it...

she gets out there running her mouth.... doesn't matter if she's a woman or not. They didn't "directly" call her that...it was indirect, yet specific...and that's why I have no problem with it.

or Quest could have not tweeted about it before the broadcast. He should have left it to urban legend, and when asked about it say that he didn't know what folks were talking about. I mean that's what I would have done. But I'm not mad at him for standing by the decision to play the song..

See me....I don't care what the other side has to run with. It doesn't matter what they have to run with because we are talking about a group of people with no integrity whatsoever and no desire to speak the truth about anything. They are ignorant, undersocialized, racist clowns who should not be afford respects that you would give to reasonable people.

and honestly ..what saves the Roots on this is that they didn't call the woman anything....it was an indirect jab.

..on inserting it into it? If it was really as simple "A man called a woman a bitch", then she couldn't have said, "They implied I was a bitch, it was offensive, they should apologize." Which, you know, they did.

Instead, she spouts her bullshit about "Well, if it was Michelle Obama, MBC would have fired them" and carries on about the "bias of Hollywood elite." If she can't talk about this without using her own bullshit dogma, then why should anyone else?

Listen..I'll say it for the 100th time...You guys are thinking way too hard on this...She's a female Presidential candidate...She was backed by music that has "bitch" in the title...lol...It ends there...

That Bachmann asshole is holding an ace in her hands because it all comes down to what a lot of folks perceive as "sexist" behavior

Where the Roots fucked up at is giving this silly, moronic woman an opening to make this go beyond a political issue....

In other words, all the politics can now be taken out of this and it can be boiled down to one simple issue that ALL WOMEN (a few female democratic women in office are now issuing statements DEFENDING Bachmann) can get behind: don't refer to a woman as a bitch..

It's just not smart.....

And I'd take it seriously if Bachmann or anyone was just making it about sexism. Yes, it was unnecessary opening that ?uest gave a moron, but rather than using it to have a serious discussion of sexism, she's using it as a platform to launch her hackneyed discussion of the "media elite" and go after a major news network. And hey, if these Republicans were consistent about their outrage across the board, I might be able to take this seriously. Everyone forgets that the country essentially smiled and looked the other way when Barbara Bush called Hillary Clinton a bitch.

>It's like liberals live in an ideological echo chamber and
>they just cannot perceive a world outside of their own biases

LOL, this is funny, because the statement is true about conservatives. Especially Michelle Bachman.

But the point is that someone like Warren keeps replying to murph talking about how Michelle Bachmann IS a liar and thus, the choice of music was apt and awesome.

(I think you are doing this to an extent too, hood)

What murph is saying (and I agree with him) is that the fact that Bachmann is a liar and a moron is irrelevant. We don't live in a just, liberal cosmos where in the end, the fact that ?uest was "right" is gonna save him.

What we are left with is that a bunch of black men--"rappers" at that--supposedly called a (beautiful) (accomplished) white woman a bitch on national TV and had the nerve to laugh about it in advance*

It don't matter how wrong or evil Bachmann's philosophies are... at the end of the day, what it comes down to is: Are you defending a woman being called a bitch on TV just because some men disagree with her opinions? You can even take the race element out of it and it's still a firebomb issue.

*on a Twitter page that shows one of the black men hobnobbing with Obama. This point is secondary and maybe even tertiary, though.

I'll say I enjoyed it because they were calling her a liar, rather than they were implying she was a bitch. As mentioned below, there were certainly more **clever** songs they could have used, but there's a certain visceral humor that's comes from using that song (kinda like a song called "Bitch, I'm Broke" is more funny than a song called "I'm Broke).

I guess also at the end of the day, I see calling someone a "liar" is more serious slight than calling someone a "bitch." But I'm not a woman, so I can't speak to how a woman would react. And at the end of the day, she consistently and unapologetically presents falsifications as facts, and that should not get lost or trumped because ?uest implied she was a bitch.

I'm saying that if Quest felt that way....I commend him for making his feelings known, albeit indirectly...

it's called having a conviction, and making a statement and accepting the consequences. I admire that even when I don't agree with the sentiments being expressed.

>

It's irrelevant to you because you either don't believe she is those things, or if you do, you wouldn't have the conviction to communicate them in the forum that Quest chose to.

the point that you and murph as missing is that what is really irrelevant is whether or not Quest is "saved" or not. Again, when a person acts on conviction without letting the consequences of their act change their conviction, there is a level of courage in that.

>What we are left with is that a bunch of black men--"rappers"
>at that--supposedly called a (beautiful) (accomplished) white

the woman is heinous...... her internal ugliness radiates through to the outside.... so where you get this "beautiful" thing from is looking at this about as shallow as possible..

real beauty comes from the inside..it comes from one's character. that being said she's horrible.

>
>It don't matter how wrong or evil Bachmann's philosophies

again...they don't matter to you. To others with conviction and courage to speak on it, it does matter.

at the end of the day, what it comes down to is: Are
>you defending a woman being called a bitch on TV just because
>some men disagree with her opinions? You can even take the

uh huh..... What was that you call Lauryn Hill?? or what type of music does Joe make?? Music for whom???

oh yeah...

see player...in the real world what a person says and does matter. When you dealing with real people, you're gonna get your hypocrite card pulled.... and people like Bachmann are gonna have what they say, and portray brought back to them..

it's the cycle of life.

If you have the moral high ground, and you use it moronically, then you lose it. If say, after this incident, Bachmann, "They're a bunch of stupid n@##$ers for calling me a bitch," then she'd undoubtedly have forfeited the moral high ground. Now, she didn't do that, but she did use it to advance the old "culture wars" stand-by (the liberal Hollywood elite) and did subtly bring race into it ("If they said that about Michelle Obama, they'd be fired." Yes, that counts as race). So her reaction erodes her moral high ground, but doesn't eliminate it.

Having a band imply that you're a "bitch" doesn't give you free range to say anything and everything in response and expect that you're still entitled to the moral high-ground.

You saying, "Well, they called her a bitch so she gets the moral high ground." I'm saying that depends on how she continues to react, she doesn't necessarily get to keep, nor should everyone keep ceding it to her.

But that's the mistake most people are making though...I'll admit that I'm a liberal...I think the Republicans are a reality show onstage...

But there are some things that trump politics when it comes to the public at large....I myself can look at it as the Roots being on some smart "hip-hop" shit, just as Warren and others do....The general public, however, will look at it as a woman being boiled down as a bitch...

I mean, this is Michele Bachmann we are talking about...lol.. This chick is a fucking moron...She's homophobic...She's a dimwitted idiot who has little regard for history...

but it seems to only be growing, with news agencies playing a grotesque game of Telephone as the state, restate and distort facts. Reading the latest reports on it, you'd think they actually DID literally call her a bitch over and over as she walked on.

Like the running theme now is to reject ?uest's assertion that it was a spontaneous choice because he tweeted it hours before the show... I mean, these people DO realize that the show is not broadcast live, right?

I still can't see ?uest getting fired, though... Hate to say it, but if you sack the Roots, you might as well cancel the whole show. Jimmy knows that too.

Yep...and this is why it would be wise for Quest to issue a televised apology and go on a week suspension...Hopefully, those two things would shut down all the noise that's being made...Because as it stands right now, a lot of folks in this thread are underestimating just how serious this is...

Go to the website of any major news outlet. You've got stories about Thanksgiving, stories about hunger (related to the stories about Thanksgiving), stories about the Republican debate last night, stories about the riots in Cairo (which are essentially seen as a retread about the riots in Cairo during the spring). That's translate into a slow news week.

When you sympathize with a hate spewing being like Bachmann, or a truth altering snake like Glenn Beck?

Where was the outrage from the media when Michelle Obama was booed at Nascar?

I searched for Glenn Beck's response to that and what I found was an article about Limbaugh defending the fans and Beck chiming in with a little support as well.

Where is the intelligent conclusion found when you're dealing with clearly one sided people? It's no where to be found, and that is why this ultra neo conservative bullshit needs to be wiped from the slate.

I'm sure there were plenty of people on the left outraged about it.

Why are you searching for Glen Beck or Limbaugh's response to something like that? You already know what it's going to be. This shit isn't hard to figure out.

both sides are "clearly one-sided people". that's the shit you don't get. if you can flat-out say that is was the right thing to do for The Roots to play that song then you obviously are one-sidedjust on the side YOU believe is the right one. No one should be one-sided. This gang mentality is ruining are society. People can't think past what side they're think they should be on.

Logically, you, Afkap, and murph are right, but like Austin mentioned above why do we always have to be the one's cruising the high road? What's the point of having nuanced positions when dealing with these people, (Bachman, Beck, Republicans, etc.)?

I'm tired, man.

but I think acknowledging and stooping to their level sometimes says more about you than the person you are calling out.

and it's hard to do and NOT be a hypocrite.

people in here are acting as if EVERYone should be fine with what The Roots did.

I mean, you can't predict the backlash from the usual suspects?

All they do is preach to the choir any way so why pay it any mind?

People on the right will be up in arms and people on the left love it.

That's how everything goes so I don't see the big deal.

*shrugs*

yea, she is a lying bitch and yea, it wasn't a good idea for The Roots because they didn't weigh the outcome of their actions and also went against what they stand for. Like I said above, this is the same group that purposely edits out the word from their own albums.

The problem is you are looking at this as picking sides...

There's nothing logical or illogical about any of this...There are no sides...It's all about commonsense....

We all know what the Beck's of the world are about..Limbaugh? He just called the first lady "uppity"...Those fools are racist blowhards who don't even deserve the time...

But there are some things that go beyond race, politics, class ect...

When an issue can be broken down in simplistic terms, it's tough to look like you are making a hard boiled, I-got-right-on-my-side statement...In a sense, you bury the lede...

It's not smart...If we are judging our actions on the Left against Limbaugh and the like, that's a pretty fucked up measurement...lol

she believes in a very racist brand of christianity. she constantly attacks women's reproductive rights.

Often, she will say something outrageous and follow it with a cheerful disclaimer. During the last Presidential campaign, she told Chris Matthews, on MSNBC, that Barack Obama held anti-American views and then admitted, I made a misstatement. (In 2010, she said that she had been right about Obamas views all along: Now I look like Nostradamus.) In the spring of 2009, during what appeared to be the beginnings of a swine-flu epidemic, Bachmann said, I find it interesting that it was back in the nineteen-seventies that the swine flu broke out then under another Democrat President, Jimmy Carter. And Im not blaming this on President ObamaI just think its an interesting coincidence.

i understand the intersection of race/gender issues this snark raises, but i don't really have a problem with it. it'll get the band and network in trouble, but the the intent of the song wasn't a chauvinistic or racially charged statement. if anything, it was a statement about the individual, who happens to be white and female...and who does happen to tell non-truths to support her political agenda and holds some views that might not put her in the favor of many people in the country. the news media can re-interpret it all they want to manufacture some headlines and bring some underlying social issues to the forefront, but it's all for exploitation and sensationalism. you might get some "intellectual" analysis of the scenario, but ultimately, it's a way to play politics into the scene and cash in on it.

flipping the whole way to look at this situation invokes some pretty provocative ideas as well, but of course the news media, "liberal" or "conservative", won't do that.

it might be bad press, but it can be good publicity among music listeners, too.

The right has no problem going in and defending their own. It doesn't even matter when the shit they say is a flat out false... death panels, re-education camps, hpv vaccine causes retardation... she is a lyin ass bitch. And save the sexist argument.. females call each other bitch all the time. And let's not forget this is the same woman that called for an investigation into "unamerican" activities by those in congress. The fact anyone in the mainstream media gives her any credibility at all just shows how broken this shit is. I love the fact we're finally seeing the left grow some balls. Respect to Quest and them.

Because "calling" her a bitch gives Bachmann an out...It allows her to control the conversation...It basically makes a dimwitted, homophobic, crazy-eyed, nonsensical woman look sympathetic in the eyes of other women across all demographics and political leanings...

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-250_162-57330074/fact-checking-the-gop-national-security-debate/

BACHMANN: "This is one thing we know about Barack Obama: He has essentially handed over our interrogation of terrorists to the ACLU. He's outsourced it to them. Our CIA has no ability to have any form of interrogation for terrorists."

THE FACTS: The CIA still has the ability to interrogate terrorists. President Obama formed the High Value Interrogation Group, which includes the FBI, the CIA and the Pentagon. It centralizes expertise so that when a terrorism suspect is caught, everyone with a stake in the issue is involved in the questioning. The CIA also can sit in on interrogations in other countries, asking questions directly or through officials of the host government.

Whether the policy on interrogating suspects should be tougher is a matter of authentic debate. But the CIA is hardly emasculated. The agency has dramatically expanded its on-the-ground operations worldwide since 2001, and the U.S. killing of a succession of al Qaeda figures in Pakistan Osama bin Laden chief among them demonstrates the potency of the hunt for terrorists. Moreover, the U.S. killing of an American citizen abroad the radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki is well outside the range of action that would be condoned by civil liberties advocates.

-------------------------------------

BACHMANN: "Almost every decision that the president has made since he came in has been one to put the United States in a position of unilateral disarmament, including the most recent decision he made to cancel the Keystone pipeline. That would have not only created jobs, but it would have helped us in energy independence."

THE FACTS: Obama didn't cancel the Canadian oil pipeline. Instead, his administration delayed the decision in order to explore an alternative route to avoid areas of Nebraska that include wetlands and an aquifer providing water crucial to huge swaths of U.S. cropland. Bachmann also overlooked that the delay came under pressure from Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman, a Republican. When the pipeline was delayed, Heineman hailed the decision and called it "an exceptional moment for Nebraskans."

-------------------------------------------

http://www.cnn.com/2011/11/23/politics/truth-squad-iran-israel/index.html

Michele Bachmann said the issue of Israeli aggression came up only because of Iran's possible nuclear capability.

The statement:

"...why is it that we're talking about Israel having to make a strike against Iran? It's because Iran has announced they plan to strike Israel.

"They've stated, as recently as August just before President Ahmadinejad came to -- to the U.N. General Assembly. He said that he wanted to eradicate Israel from the face of the Earth.

"He has said that if he has a nuclear weapon he will use it to wipe Israel off the face of the Earth. He will use it against the United States of America."

The facts:

In 2005, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, during a meeting with protesting students at Iran's Interior Ministry, quoted a remark from Ayatollah Khomeini, founder of Iran's Islamic revolution, that Israel "must be wiped out from the map of the world."

Ahmadinejad then said: "And God willing, with the force of God behind it, we shall soon experience a world without the United States and Zionism," according to a quote published by Iran's state news outlet, the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).

This year, Ahmadinejad spoke to the U.N. General Assembly in September. He criticized Zionism and the United States, but did not threaten a military attack on either country.

Ahmadinejad has maintained Iran seeks only nuclear energy capability, not nuclear weapons. On November 9, he denied once again that his country is pursuing nukes.

"The Americans have fabricated a stack of papers and he keeps speaking about them," he said on state-run Press TV. "Why don't you do a report on the U.S. nuclear program and its allies? Present a report on the thousands of U.S. military bases where Washington has nuclear arms that threaten global security."

The verdict:

False. While Ahmadinejad is no fan of Israel or the United States, he did not state in August that he wants to eradicate Israel. Because he does not acknowledge pursuit of nuclear weapons, he could not have threatened to use them against Israel or the United States.

I'll say this much: She looks a hell of a lot smarter and more capable of being President than Herman Cain on the debate stage.

I think she's ignorant, crazy, and I don't agree with her values. I wouldn't call her stupid, though. haha

seems overwhelmingly stupid to me.

The hilight of the debate for me last night was when Gingrich and her went at it about illegal immigrants.

Newt gets respect from me for his view. Someone who has had a family in the US for 25 years...worked, paid taxes, part of the community....we should find a way for them to stay. Why break up their family?

And his quote while side-eying her was something like:

"After all....We're supposed to be the 'family' party"

Good on Newt.

I mean. . is it a wise move for The Roots considering their position on NBC?

Maybe. Maybe not. That doesn't concern me.

But the fact of the matter is that there is no song that equals how absolutely
insane, stupid & dangerous this woman is to our country and the world.

I dislike her just like everyone else in this thread. But The Roots should've left their political views out of it. We all saw how the Right went hard on hippie/vegetarian/former hardcore b-boy Common so it would be just seconds before they blow the Roots out of the water on this one. I am happy the Roots have a good and steady gig; wouldn't want to see them mess that up over some b.s.

But Michele Bachmann is a fucking hateful human being. Quite literally a bad person.

I don't empathize with her or with anyone in her camp, nor with anyone who feels like the move was excessive.

your moms got it. For everyone who is saying that it's troubling for a rap group to make a reference to a bitch..... the fact that it wasn't used in the manner that is usually associated with rap music adds to the irony and the cleverness of what they did...

the chorus is something like "there's another man...in my life"

and she's like talking on one of the verses about findin out her man was gay ..

anyways..... yeah..that would have been a good one for Bachmann

help himself. and if he didnt tweet about it, no one would know how clever theyre being lol.

if they picked any other song that had liar in the title apart from one that ended in bitch, it would probably have been ok. i dont think its that bad though, theres no lyrics being sung. but good on the quest and roots for trying to stick it to someone who deserves to be taken down a peg or two. and they did it with inference rather than name calling.

me personally, id have sung a gay rights anthem in ironic fashion lol.

I'll add on it's perfectly within reason for him to backtrack a bit to keep his job so long as it's not a complete 180. So far even his apology has had underlying snark so he good.

I dont kare that the word 'bit`h' was used.

The problem is that it aktuallie takes NO balls to implie that someone is a bit`h while welkoming them with a smile....hugging them..."we're so glad to have u here." Talk about being a bit`h.

The onlie honourable method of kalling someone a bit`h....is to kall them a bit`h. That would have been kareer-suiside in terms of TV...but at least it would be honourable.

Making fun of someone unbeknownst to them is for kowardlie teenaged bullies. ain't no balls about it.

It's also extremelie nerd-like. "Hahaha....she has no klue about this obskure fishbone song from 1986. We made her look so stupid. haha"

Couldn't have said it any better myself.

I am shocked at the amount of people crying foul over this.

If they get fired, they get fired. I don't care. (even though they won't).

You cannot overstate how completely insane it is that a woman like this can
actually potentially become President of the United States. The woman is
ignorant and a dangerous prospect to the entire world. A little snarky song
on Fallon can't change that, but shit, I ain't going to feel bad for that

CRAZY LYIN' ASS BITCH WHO THINKS GOD TALKS TO HER, CLAIMS CAN
CURE HOMOSEXUALITY, CLAIMS HPV VACCINE CAUSES MENTAL RETARDATION,
BASICALLY THINKS THERE IS A CONSPIRACY THAT DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTS
UNLEASH SWINE FLEW !!!!!! SAYS CARBON DIOXIDE IS NOT ACTUALLY HARMFUL!
WANTS TO GET RID OF MINIMUM WAGE.

I mean it goes on and on. Imagine the wars this BITCH would start.
Imagine the damage this BITCH would cause the earth!
Imagine the crazy laws this BITCH would pass.
You don't want her to get elected because then we'll really find out what a BITCH
she is.

no one even knew what the song was first of all
not Bachmann, Fallon, or the audience
You wouldn't have known either if someone didn't tell you
this was not some strong statement
it was a sneaky backdoor diss
that's pretty evident

Who said it was a strong statement. I compared it to a fucking dis record... so...

>it was a sneaky backdoor diss

Backdoor? You act like they ever have or will have face time with this woman to dis her to her face. This is the closest they'll prolly ever get to her, and it was on nationwide television for all to see. Their job is to play intro music and what did they do? they figured out a way to do their job while at the same time lettng theri feelings about the woman known.

>that's pretty evident

Quest had to TELL his stans via twitter
it essentially took a snitch for this to go viral
it was meant to be an inside joke
Quest told (in an indirect way btw) his FOLLOWERS on twitter
what they did was not impressive or brave
it was covert and irresponsible

You continue to be more of a joke.

You have obviously never paid attention to politics in your life.

He knew he was always gonna have to tell his followers. That's why he tweeted before they did it. At the end of the day, it panned out probably about exactly as ?uest expected. It was always gonna go viral despite how 'sneaky' it was, and how he had to make people aware of it.

i never knew *alluding* to someone being a bitch was so offensive... ppl keep saying "it's the same thing as calling her a bitch on national television"... no it isn't.. not even a little bit... if someone said, "oh her? well, she's a.. a 'you know what'".. that's not calling someone a bitch.. it's being kinda polite by communicating the sentiment w/o being offensive.. mofos needed to fill in mad blanks/connect mad dots for this to even be an issue... and really, the only ppl who are mad had to have those dots connected FOR them... shit's like 4th degree anger lol..

but yea, honestly, i think anyone who can "get it" enough to not be pissed off at them, personally, needs to admire that ballsy shit.. and i mean, it's always hilarious to make fun of someone to their face w/o them even realizing it... it's a comedy show.. shit's pure comedy lol..

Never actually tweeted the song. I'm actually surprised he didn't delete that cause he had plenty of time to before the media caught on. And I am convinced that one of these pawns actually *did* get it to the media outlets, having watched ALL of the threads in GD and here. It took way too long for them if they had got it on their own.

From what I understand they were the first to report what song it was. So it's the belief that that OKP read the FIRST GD post and reported it.

I'm not sure why people are acting like this is a big deal. No it wasn't some great political act of courage. Really? lol It was a snarky "inside" joke that should have stayed "inside". What would have been courageous was to tell Michelle Bachman to her face why you think she is a "lying ass bitch", either on camera or off, backed by a well thought out and clear political perspective. The Roots were never going to do that though. Why? They don't get paid for that. They get paid to provide music for a major corporation that has a nightly national tv show where very strict policies get enforced and where there are penalties for "not following orders". I know because I used to work for NBC. They will get reprimanded (but most likely not fired) and will continue to be the "house" band. End of story.

sidenote...I would try to parlay this into as much pub as possible for the new album but that's kinda hard to do being that they are "muzzled" right now.

i'm trying to listen to people's pov's on here and all that but i can't stand listening to this lying ass bitch. there's no more apt description.

sorry.

and foh, all these folks acting brand new about the language. this is a hip hop site. if y'all had prollems with the word 'bitch', y'all would have been out a long ass time ago.

now, in the interest of purity of political statements, yeah, a cover of 'lying ass woman' or 'lying ass politician' would have been equally apropos, albeit less visceral.

peace & blessings,

this isn't about whether you agree with their stance on Bachmann. They are employees who represent NBC and LNJF when they are performing on the show and you can't flat out disrespect your guests. whether its subtle or not- because people will know it and word will spread regardless (which is exactly what happened). I'm all for playful snark, but this was just mean.

sure those who share their sentiments will applaud them for the ballsy move, but this was not smart and not a good look for them. it jeopardizes a good situation and you know damn well NBC is gonna keep a closer eye on them and I would assume they need to run ALL music choices by them in advance now.

Honestly, I don't think she expected flat out malice, but she couldn't have expected a positive reception at such a venue.
