"Was Jermaine Stewart the most overtly gay black male to score a hit?"

Post disco era of course.... I mean i know Luther was gay but they did a fairly good job of keeping that on the DL. But man it was tripping me out the other day when I was going over some old tapes with videos on them and came across "The Word is Out". I mean not only is the song about a his "secret" getting out but dude was making no effort to hide his flamboyance.

For those that don't remember the video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1tSZHESTh4

Then dude followed up with what might be the most fabulous video of the decade http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ID_N7rv-iN8

I mean good for him and all but seriously how was he able to fight off the post disco homophobia and score hits looking and sounding like this?

It's kinda wild how the music industry was able to pull off some don't ask don't tell shit back then.

But that shit went right out the door as Reagan brought morning to America.

You had the whole androgynous thing going on but most of those dudes (in black music any way) were clearly after pussy. Jermaine is the only dude I can think of since that time that left no doubt about his sexuality. Even back then we knew the females were merely props to keep middle America from going ape shit.

I can find a bunch of cats from that area that existed in that gray area. But they are sweet and low to Jermaine's pure cane sugar.

i actually came in here to post that video. the video is absolutely class, and highly camp. but point taken, it is quite ambiguous, and the jermaine songs are pretty unequivocal in hindsight. haven't heard either of those songs since the eighties, they took me back ha ha ha.

....due to damn near every other male singer at the time throwin' on mascara and foundation, lol. I mean, yeah, those other cats did make it obvious they were after some trim, as you stated. I guess since Jermaine's look wasn't too far fetched because of those other cats competing with him on who could look the most effeminate, he was good. People were willing to overlook the innuendos due to the look of that era, is my guess.

dude was hiding in plain sight so to speak. thinking back it seems like we were sure he was gay... but maybe since it wasn't confirmed everyone just let it go.

he was making Club cuts, and using the hot producers at the time ( Eric Kupper and a few other cats). Nothing inherently Gay about that.

in fact, "Supernatural" from that album is MEAN...

People slept on it. He did himself in with all the pageantry and nonsense, but MUSICALLY, that album wasn't too bad.

being the cradle of house and all you guys seem a lot more open to shit like this in some of your clubs... I can tell you with 100% certainty that no straight black club out here played any Rupaul music. The only place I ever saw that video or heard the track was in this gay friendly club my wife liked to go to back then.

Back in the day The Word is Out was getting thrown into the mix at underground hip hop clubs.

but i know you said post Disco era.

I would even say that title goes to Prince more than "We Don't Have To Take Our Clothes Off" - despite him dying of AIDS, if memory serves correct, and clearly being a gay man - he didn't give up too much to the public in that sense. I bring up the AIDS issue not cause he was a gay man, but because it was the 80's and from what I understand the climate towards the gay population was openly violatile - Rock Hudson's situation comes to mind. In any event, people can position it how they'd like with Prince - but his first set of videos all the way through his third album were in panties (not mens anything... panties) womens tops, lip gloss, flowing Farah Fawcette hair and he couldn't keep his clothes on amongst his bassist and guitarist he kept - touching, fondling, and falling against. True the last three items was consistent with most rock bands from that time.

Not quite like Little Richard did (aka the original Rkelly)
and how Sylvester did it.. which was so overt many people thought he was a woman cause he dressed in drag.

I'm sure I'm covering stuff that's already been covered but I'll leave it there.

Oh and for the record I'm a huge Prince fan.

Honestly to some extent the same can be said of Michael Jackson if you look at the infamous 20/20 interview. That was what? 79. 80?

Whatever the case, Little Richard owns this post.

Then of course there was Giorgio.

Also brings to mind Freddie Mercury. From what I know...he never officially came out and he also never told anyone he had AIDS. Apparently, even alot of his close friends didn't know he had AIDS until days before he died. It's kinda tragic.

And that huge tribute concert they did for him is really touching to this day. You got metal guys like Metallica and GNR all co-signing F Mercury. It was like a way of everybody saying that they accepted him for who he was. Still moves me to this day.

A couple surprises to me here:

Roddy Bottum (keyboards for Faith no More...his stage name makes sense now)
Gary Burton (Yes....the vibraphone player)
John Cage (didn't know that)
Frankie Knuckles (makes sense....didn't know that)
Brian Mcknight (is that true? Didn't know that)
Cole Porter (Honestly didn't know that)
Billy Strayhorn
Cecil Taylor

Also read in other places:

Tracy Chapman

Jokes.

Whatever....he's a little effeminate. Contrary to politically correct discourse....most effeminate males are gay.

But I'm gossiping here. A strange moral dilemma. On the one hand....people should have privacy and individuals are not responsible for being the spokespersons of a group. On the other hand, gay people can be empowered by popular celebrities coming out to tell the truth. Tough line to walk.

Personally, I could care less if a pop star/artist was gay. But it's also cool to acknowledge how many gay people made significant contributions to the arts in the face of their oppression.

Her photos have been taken. She talks about her partner.

She won't make the Big Coming Out Announcement but it is not like she is hiding anything. I think she treats it as no big deal.

Sometimes I think black folks in particular are okay with people being bi or gay as long as they don't make a public acknowledgement of it.

proving the point that it's not wise to come out as a black artist.

In response to Reply # 88

Most artists don't ever get the chance to have their projects released on an (inter)national level with millions of dollars of major label support. If you're talking about sales and media visibility, those artists had that too. They weren't the toast of the industry but they were successful enough for it to mean something.

a guy my brother knows runs a business here, he basically hooks up the stars and shit with whatever they want while they're here
he gets the inside track because he knows the people that book shows here
anyway, when Maxwell did a show at the Landmark Theater back when Embryo was out, he hooked him up with stuff in his hotel room, a guide for shit to do in the city, etc
he said that when most people ask for weed or strippers and shit, he said that Max told him personally "If I don't have a man waiting in the hotel room for me when I get there, I'm not going onstage"
being that Richmond is a small city, and all he has to lose by lying about that shit, I'm inclined to believe him
some people that used to work for him said the same thing, and this was before and after the fact

89. "A few things:"
In response to Reply # 69

1.) The interview on the deluxe edition on BLACKsummersnight raised my eyebrows a few times based on some of the stuff he said...I can't remember specifics, but it seemed to match how I was feeling at the time. This was of course prior to September 2010 in which I made certain admissions and atonements.

2.) This may seem fickle so forgive me: I do realize that a creative synergy can exist between two people who are in NO way romantically involved (especially since it's happened to me), but the way Hod David and Max spoke of how they worked on the material struck me as...well...a true musical love affair that was more than musical...

3.) Max's extended silence after "Embrya" and since the first phase of BLACKsummersnight. You THAT quiet for THAT long and don't emerge with no kids or steady mate that you discuss in interviews? That shit seems mad suspect...

Speaking of which, anybody heard from Busta Rhymes lately? #messy

In response to Reply # 89

Concerning #3: Perhaps Max is extremely private about his love life. He may hold it sacred. He also has a fanbase that is primarly female. If his core supporters find out about a steady woman in his life, it may jeopardize business since it could ruin their "fantasy" being that Max's image is based on being a "nu-soul loverman".

The gay factor is more about what ISN'T said than what is said.

If Max keeps crooning the women and never speaks on it, he could be alright. However, in this new information age? Few are safe...

>Concerning #3: Perhaps Max is extremely private about his
>love life. He may hold it sacred. He also has a fanbase that
>is primarly female. If his core supporters find out about a
>steady woman in his life, it may jeopardize business since it
>could ruin their "fantasy" being that Max's image is based on
>being a "nu-soul loverman".

That's fair to say and all...no hate on playing the devil's advocate card...

However, having a steady woman would not jeopardize Max's status as a sex symbol IF he were straight. This is 2011, not 1980. Women will STILL fantasize about their favorite star even if he's with somebody and the female fans know about it. If he abused her or fucked around on her, females might bail...look at Eric Benet.

if you are out and proud it's probably the end of your career. Its just interesting that (and i guess im talking about black music) as long as its not official everyone is happy to "play the game.

Back to the topic there has always been a lane for fellas to play in seeming camp to get you women (i have played this hand from time to time) so i guess its just a case of treading that line.

as I said, the music biz has been on a "don't ask don't tell" trip for the longest... I mean going way back look at Liberace. That cat made Little Richard look like Rick Ross.

I remember when Liberace died, seeing that story on the news. I don't think I knew how his name was was spelled at the time. When I saw it written out, I LOL-ed.

I knew who he was, strangely enough.

It's threads like this that remind me why I love OKP! Just the most random topics! Stream of consciousness running all over the place! I'm still laughing at the Imagination video! When I was a kid I couldn't stand them, that illusion song was on the radio and my sis put it on top of the wardrobe and locked me in my bedroom! Bitch! ha!

Speaking of JS I'm sure my sis did pr on the 'we don't have to...' track / album...must see if there was any gossi

Both Tonex & Donnie say that they're ex-gays, I'm not sure how much of that is true but it's quite a few gospel artists out today that claim that they were bi or gay sometime in their career but not actually telling about it until after they claim that they aren't anymore now that they're popular though.

Tye Tribbett seems/act kind of that way as well but I'm just going off of mannerisms though, I could be totally wrong about him.
