looking for the next dick to ride to certify his coolness.

The performance however kinda reminded me of this thread (not to fall into a self-referential trap after just shitting on Mos for injecting himself into the situation but it really did & I believe you were on a hiatus at the time so here it is):

http://board.okayplayer.com/okp.php?az=show_topic&forum=17&topic_id=126995&mesg_id=126995&listing_type=search

I even tried to up it (since it's somehow still unlocked but in archives) but a note popped up after I hit 'post message' that said 'your reply has been sent to the moderator of this forum for review'.

I mean it's all relative, Wu kinda did that when they dropped even though in retrospect there was still some acts dropping quality product in '92 who were relatively close to their prime.

When groups like the Stooges, Ramones & eventually the British punk bands came in there was still good rock records & legendary bands not completely ancient & useless just yet.

Nirvana & Run-DMC both felt like a reaction to something.

Not trying to compare OFWGKTA to anybody yet but just saying they can be a part of a bellweather moment in rap where the younger, DIY, web-driven next generation can make up their own rules & carve out something cool enough doing it that they render a lot of the old shit irrelevant just by existing.

That's the kind of thing that excites me in any genre of music (but especially in my favorite one that I've watched grow up) & something I hadn't seen in awhile in hip-hop.

Tyler & them look like it or at least part of it.

I'm pretty sure he could identify with that energy. Even if he couldn't, who are we to define the parameters of his sensibilities?

He was having fun. Why attach baseless meaning to that?

Meanwhile, I LOVED that reaction.

Also remember what questlove said about relevancy, careers and being open to the next baton holders.

I'm not saying that's what Mos is doing. But if he is, that's not stupid. It's business.

Make no mistake, this is ALL a business.

As usual, you're the pathetic one going overboard with your faux macho bullshit

I didn't like Mos Def's behavior. I said it. Other people seem not to have minded, or even to endorse it.

That's fine... No skin off my nose.

But you're so obsessed with telling other people what to think and calling them "fags" because god forbid they have different opinions from you... that to me is some real insecure "fag" shit.

I'm not gonna reduce myself to going back and forth with you on some estrogen-infused bullshit like that, so feel free to drop your breast-beating retort for me to summarily ignore.

I understand. He was supposed to be the second coming,
and when it was clear that he wasn't going to be, you
(like me) started asking what he ever did to deserve it,
and got annoyed with his meandering and posturing.

Truth is, Black Star and BOBS are 5 mic albums, both
of them. He's earned the right to be a cornball, and he
uses that pass (its almost expired, and he needs to apply
for a new one)

And I wanted to hate his acting, until I saw 'Something
the Lord Made' which is unhateable

Mos is one of those dudes that you used to want to like
more than he deserved

Now you want to hate him more than he deserves

Let's tone that shit down. There's nothing wrong with him,
and hating on him screaming in the camera is honestly wildly
faggot. I expect that from AFKAP, but not from you, Bomb.

is just truth, which is why it was funny to watch it all culminate in him/Puff fighting over Jay Electronica's dick & that dude's still only made two real songs two years later.

Musically, he's had some good moments (a lot of his early Rawkus singles, a lot of BOBS & some of Ecstatic) and some bad ones (the New Danger).

Same thing with the acting, he's had some wins (Something The Lord Made was great) & some Ls (that highly unfortunate Damon Wayans Handyman voice he used on 16 Blocks......though I blame the director for allowing that shit to slide).

No, he's had great moments. Jesus, Bomb. Just admit it. He's

There's a reason he was hyped, even if the hype was too
much. Dude is a serious motherfucker musically.

He is not Jesse Jackson "the old irrelevant black
leader who can't let go." The nigga just dropped a
dope album less than two years ago. He's been in a
lot films across various genres. He doesn't beg for
the roles. The filmmakers find him.

He's not Jesse Jackson "feels like he's more relevant
than he is." Mos Def didn't beg to be on Jimmy Fallon.
Niggas keep calling Mos because he's knowledgable and
charismatic.

He is nothing like Jesse Jackson, at all.

Mos Def actually be chilling minding his business,
riding his skateboard, acting, making doe, enjoying
life. The nigga is a winning at life right now. He
basically makes music for fun, whenever the fuck he
wants. He makes movies. And he probably has more
money than any of us think.

Seriously, just let it go.

I can't really say much more than I did: Boho Puffy, Supremely Talented MC With A Somewhat Inconsistent Catalog, Some Misguided Musical/Film Moments, Bit Of A Dickrider but overall a dude I like more than I don't.

If that's hate (sorta like acknowledging that McNabb so far likely isn't a Hall of Famer, is injury-prone, hasn't been a truly elite QB in half a decade & it was time to move him while they could) then so be it but I just consider it real talk.

As I said, I hopped onto Affy's comment more laughing about it then anything, I acknowledge that I'd have lost my shit as well if I saw that live.

I'd venture to guess I've patronized Mos Def's work with my dollars (both onstage, on record, & at the box office) as much as you have or most anyone here has (besides buying True Magic, saw that burnt-CD-look in the store & chalked it up to 'download first' status).

I don't hate the dude or really spend much time thinking about him off these boards or even on them anytime recently.

FREE EARL.

It just happened to be by (predictably) the same asshole who has been pulling stunts like that for years.

Like Bomb said, he's the mirror image of Puffy. He's always looking for trendy shit to attach himself to so as to bask in reflected coolness.

Y'all talking about "he gave OFWGKTA his endorsement"... Of what value IS an endorsement from Dante Smith in 2011? He has more to gain from them than they do from him... In fact, if they're smart, they'll stay far away from him so his cheese stink don't rub off.

But seriously, this is not about my distaste for Mos Def, I would probably have felt the same if Divine Styler had done it.

No, you wouldn't have cared if it wasn't Mos Def,

though it was Mos Def.

>It just happened to be by (predictably) the same asshole who
>has been pulling stunts like that for years.

Stunts like what? Screaming at cameras?

What "stunt" did the camera thing mimic? Or are you just
making shit up and building slippery slops between him
innocently screaming into the camera and him doing something
else completely unrelated in a different context?

Right.

>Like Bomb said, he's the mirror image of Puffy. He's always

Weird. I have never formally seen himself attached to Odd
Future other than him simply saying their a talented and
maybe attending their show. If that's "attaching themselves"
than....no, its not. Its stupid, and you're being a hater.

Do pushups, nigga.

No body cares about that shit. He didn't "endorse" shit.
You can hate on Mos Def for anything (and its clear that you
do) but the one thing that is undeniable about dude is that
he's a FAN OF HIP-HOP. Never been a question. He likes these
dudes because they are fucking good. He's not formally "endorsing"
shit. He got hyped and screamed in the camera. It was funny but
overall uneventful.

Never been a fan of that shit. It's ghetto and ignorant and just really played out.

I feel embarrassed for ANYBODY I see doing that shit.

The fact that it was Mos Def trying to squeeze himself into the frame (per usual) makes it a little worse--just a LITTLE, mind you--but I would have hated it from anybody.

It just happens to fit a pattern of behavior by Mos, so it didn't surprise me in the least.

"Formally"?

Nigga, nobody said he called a press conference to declare his affiliation with Odd Future. I'm just saying it's one thing to be hype about a performance, it's another thing to squeeze your crusty soup coolers into the camera in order to try and upstage some shit.

If he was so hype, why he couldn't be hype to the side? Why'd it have to be right UP in the camera? You say he's a FAN OF HIP-HOP... cool. So lay back in the cut and be a fan. How does your ass get IN FRONT of the camera? Do you know where that camera is located? You gotta actually do some work to get in front of it.... It's not like the camera panned and found him screaming with excitement. HE found the camera.

Why wasn't Black Thought or anybody else up in there? They're not FANS OF HIP-HOP too?

It was perfectly appropriate.

No it doesn't fit a goodamn thing

Shush

>be hype about a performance, it's another thing to squeeze
>your crusty soup coolers into the camera in order to try and
>upstage some shit.

And how in blue fuck did he "upstage" anything? He screamed
into the camera after a wild performance. Nobody cared.

Lighten up, faggot

>If he was so hype, why he couldn't be hype to the side? Why'd

>HIP-HOP... cool. So lay back in the cut and be a fan. How does
>your ass get IN FRONT of the camera? Do you know where that
>camera is located? You gotta actually do some work to get in
>front of it.... It's not like the camera panned and found him
>screaming with excitement. HE found the camera.

Nobody is mad that he jumped in front of the camera except
you and (for some weird reason) Bomb. There was absolutely
nothing wrong with it.

>Why wasn't Black Thought or anybody else up in there? They're
>not FANS OF HIP-HOP too?

The "fan of hip-hop" point was to counter that dumbass argument
of you and Bomb that Mos is "attaching himself to Odd Future."

That argument is asinine because Mos is not "attaching" himself
to anything. He likes odd future. That isn't "attaching" anything
to anyone. Mos Def is a huge fan on music, listens to lots of it
and can like and cosign whatever the fuck he likes.

You niggas need to go to the strip club or some shit.

I've actually been feeling it's been pretty flabby since maybe the late 90s... A lot of these new kids have gotten me a lot more excited (in theory) than I've been about rap in many, many years but most of them have like, interesting concepts but lack the follow-through that OFWGKTA have shown.

All I know is that I didn't receive anything. But then again, that thread was archived a while before I became a mod.

On another note, I will say this thread makes me want to hear these dudes. I guess I'd heard of them, but still have never heard them. I'll watch the performance when i get home.

This is the new single/video from Tyler the Creator (basically their RZA figure): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSbZidsgMfw

Tyler & his brother-probably the best MC in the crew (who's 16, maybe 15 when this was made) but MIA due to being throw into reform school (by his parents or authorities I'm not sure): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SiiqqBw47HU&feature=related

^^^That joint kinda reminds me of a vulgar Souls of Mischief.

Tyler-French: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fk68dCUQjzE

As an older head like myself, get too hung up on the subject matter, a lot of it is like some Eminem/horrorcore type of shit but done by actual teenagers so with that comes some pretty hard-to-defend lyrics but it's really about the energy & young-punk rebellious edge that's atttractive to me (that & this kid is already showing real promise as a producer & MC).

The moment after it happened it just felt like something important just happened.

The way this shit took over twitter last night was incredible. I watched this so many times on my phone that my battery died. It's just incredible.

Also I really see the brilliance in ?uest taking that spot as the musical director because he can now do things like this. I guess I knew that, but I didn't really think about it.

Just huge. Phenomenal stuff.

I'm a big fan, but I felt like a stan who was just so happy to see these guys up there.

Great performance, albeit a strange one, FULL of energy, but I find it difficult to think that they are going to be the next big thing. Can they appeal to the masses?

The hints of Nirvana, I can get down with that too.

And why was Mos there in the first place?

I mean... they'll probably could be equally as successful as the Wu/DITC with mainstream stuff. But I don't think anybody is excited for this because of the prospect of OFWGKTA becoming the next Lady Gaga or some shit. You're missing the point if you think that's the significance of this.

America loves homophobic misogynistic make-believe-violent black kids acting foolish and standing for nothing except chaos.

I dig their spirit and energy, but it's empty, there's no real substance to their lyrics/music. I don't mean to impose mature standards on a bunch of teenagers, but it's pretty obvious they're going to be iconic(sooner rather than later) and that means they'll be emulated...is that a good thing? Maybe they'll mature and spit something real. Maybe their rebellious, angst-ridden, attention-begging style is just so universal that everyone will glaze over the lyrics and declare them worthy of praise. I can't even say I hate it, but something about it gives me pause.

>America loves homophobic misogynistic make-believe-violent
>black kids acting foolish and standing for nothing except
>chaos.

Or, intelligent black kids who have single-handedly built
a creative brand that they have control over, and have
used it carve a unique niche in the hip-hop landscape.

Its the CREATIVITY that people are celebrating.

Not the lyrics about rape. There's a billion shock rappers
who talk about crazy shit. That's as old as America Pie.

Few (or none) of them are as good as Odd Future. We like
it because it sounds good. Because the group has *it* and
is talented.

Same way most of Jimi Hendrix's best shit is about pussy
and weed. We love him too. Why? Because he sounded fucking
good.

Yeah, 'Smells like Teen Spirit' was a smart parody song
with a meaning, but that had nothing to do with why people
liked Nirvana. People liked Nirvana because it sounded good.

Same with these kids.

>I dig their spirit and energy, but it's empty, there's no real
>substance to their lyrics/music.

Not sure what this means. There's plenty of substance to me.

I don't need to hear Public Enemy. I wanna hear good music.

And yes, I'm an adult.

>I don't mean to impose mature
>standards on a bunch of teenagers, but it's pretty obvious
>they're going to be iconic(sooner rather than later) and that

If it means people shaking things up, deciding to do
something original, and taking ownership of their
creative process and music, than good. I hope people do
emulate it.

These kids aren't any different than any group in the sense
that they want to be famous and sell records, but they've
made the rap game BEND TO THEIR WILL in a way that no camp
has in recent memory. Its very impressive.

>Maybe
>they'll mature and spit something real.

Not sure what "real" is. You sound like a snob, and
for no good reason. Your arguments are pretty terrible.

No, people like them because the music sounds good.

If they weren't good at their job, nobody would give a fuck
about the lyrics. There's hundreds of bands/ra

Just because they have creative control and use it doesn't make what they're creating worthy of respect, beyond the fact they're succeeding. I respect the way they've branded and marketed themselves with a consistent style, but the substance behind that style is nowhere to be found. Wu-tang had style, Wu-tang had creative control, but Wu-Tang, at least some of the time, would attempt to address topics of substance.

"Its the CREATIVITY that people are celebrating."
Again, your argument seems to be 'I don't care about substance, overwhelm me with style and I'm happy. Dazzle me with special effects and costumes and I could give a fuck what the movie is about'..which is the opposite of what I'm looking for, and I'm entitled to not want the same shit you want.

People like nirvana because it was counter-culture, but they ALSO happened to have a genius song-writer penning opuses. I'm not knocking OFWGFTA for their packaging, I'm talking about what's past the packaging.

"Same with these kids. I dig their spirit and energy, but it's empty, there's no real substance to their lyrics/music."
"Not sure what this means. There's plenty of substance to me."

Name a song that OFWGFTA has made that is about something. The most advanced concept I could find was them talking about buying shit at the supermarket. That's what I mean by lack of substance, it's a pretty simple concept to grasp. They aren't saying anything, not even remotely. Can I at least get a glimmer of them having a point? Is that too much to ask? I bet they'd even admit they have no point, I don't think you need to be such a fanboy.

"I don't need to hear Public Enemy. I wanna hear good music."

Public Enemy is good music, and apparently, you do NEED to hear them.

"I don't mean to impose mature
standards on a bunch of teenagers, but it's pretty obvious
they're going to be iconic(sooner rather than later) and
that means they'll be emulated...is that a good thing?
>"If it means people shaking things up, deciding to do
something original, and taking ownership of their
creative process and music, than good. I hope people do
emulate it."

I'm all for people pushing boundaries and being individuals. I'm not knocking that. I celebrate it, it needs to happen more often. It would just be nice if they did that without being mindless.

"These kids aren't any different than any group in the sense
that they want to be famous and sell records, but they've
made the rap game BEND TO THEIR WILL in a way that no camp
has in recent memory. Its very impressive."

I agree, I hope they keep making the industry bend to their will. But I also hope they use their power for something beyond just 'style' and 'shock rap'.

"Maybe they'll mature and spit something real."
>"Not sure what "real" is. You sound like a snob, and
for no good reason. Your arguments are pretty terrible.

Real as in substantive. Having meaning. Again, this is a pretty simple concept to grasp for most people. I'm talking about addressing any topic beyond cartoonish drug use, rape, and silly shit. These kids aren't hardcore, one of them just got sent to BOARDING SCHOOL by his parents for rapping about the shit he does. And you're an 'adult' listening to them talk about rape and huffing gasoline, nodding your head, because they're doing it with so much 'style'. Sorry I can't join you and I'm sure I'm not the only one who notices their material is completely juvenile and devoid of content.

"Maybe their
rebellious, angst-ridden, attention-begging style is just so
universal that everyone will glaze over the lyrics and
declare them worthy of praise. I can't even say I hate it, but
something about it gives me pause."
"No, people like them because the music sounds good."
And you say my arguments are terrible? I'd rather be a snob than a fanboy jumping on a bandwagon. Call it like it is, they have style, they have skills, and they're going to be stars...but their music is empty. I'm sure if you asked them, they wouldn't front like they're saying anything important beyond the typical teenager 'fuck the world' perspective, which isn't enough for me to go crazy over.

It was all a dream

1. Kids who made music for fun and themselves who then put it out for free to see what would happen.

2. "It" happened and it also happens that there's some depth to the kids and while it's not on full display (yet), they have ability.

3. Hype. It builds and kills and in this case, it's divisive. I say let them boys cook.

And groups like Odd Future are popular specifically
because bloggers like you have ruined the artistic
landscape of hip-hop with your snobbiness.

This is why Odd Future is such a breath of fresh air-

They are nicer than your favorite "meaningful" MC.

They are more creative than your favorite hipster artist.

They can't legally drink.

They wanna be famous, and are going to do it their way.

>Just because they have creative control and use it doesn't
>make what they're creating worthy of respect, beyond the fact
>they're succeeding.

And just because an artist has lyrics that are "meaningful"
doesn't mean they are worthy of respect.

I mean, we can go back and forth on this all day.

Some of the greatest artists, in every genre, have also
been the most explosively offensive. Why can we say this?

Because art is art, and we like it because it moves us,
not because it does our homework and taxes for us.

>I respect the way they've branded and
>marketed themselves with a consistent style, but the substance
>behind that style is nowhere to be found. Wu-tang had style,
>Wu-tang had creative control, but Wu-Tang, at least some of
>the time, would attempt to address topics of substance.

LOL -- what substance did Wu-Tang kick? Bizarre 5% diatribes?
Songs about pussy and weed? The Kung Fu/swordsman metaphors?
Cocaine and drug dealers stories?

Sure, C.R.E.A.M. was a nice story about "coming up," but
we like that song mostly because the beat was incredible,
and it SOUNDED good.

Hell, even 'Triumph' wasn't about shit, really. It was a
posse cut where everyone was saying random nice things
about themselves and their style. Still one of the best
posse cuts ever.

Hell, without METHOD MAD being a SEX OBJECT Wu-Tang never
gets off the fucking group when it comes to popularity.

Motherfuckers weren't "educated" by that. We loved Wu Tang
because they were a bunch of bad motherfuckers who made music
that SOUNDED GOOD.

That's it.

You're wildly overrating the "substance" of Wu-Tang.

> Again, your argument seems to be 'I don't care about
>substance, overwhelm me with style and I'm happy. Dazzle me
>with special effects and costumes and I could give a fuck what
>the movie is about'..which is the opposite of what I'm looking
>for, and I'm entitled to not want the same shit you want.

What exactly ARE you looking for?

Because I can give you hundreds of boring, uninteresting
artists who say "meaningful" shit.

>People like nirvana because it was counter-culture, but they
>ALSO happened to have a genius song-writer penning opuses.

BWAHAHAHAA.

You're just making shit up now.

That is NOT why Nirvana was POPULAR. And no, they were not
"genius song-writers" by any definition. Their biggest FANS
have even admitted that they were far better musically than
lyrically.

Nirvana is one of the best ever because they had *it* and
their music sounded GREAT. They had a style and a SOUND.

I know that you're old, but trying to inject too much meaning
into Nirvana is asinine. They were popular for the same reasons
that Odd Future is.

>Name a song that OFWGFTA has made that is about something. The

>need to be such a fanboy.

This sounds a lot like the arguments white people used to
chide hip-hop in general early on: "All they do is brag."

That's really what Odd Future does -- they talk bad about
shit they don't like, they talk great about themselves.

Just like in some of BDP's best songs.

Just like in some of Rakim's best songs.

Just like in some of the best ROCK songs of all time.

Music is music.

If you want boring songs about things, go to sleep while
listening to 'Beautiful Struggle' or the thousands of other
albums that rappers make "about" things that are snooze
worthy.

>Public Enemy is good music, and apparently, you do NEED to
>hear them.

a) I'm a bigger PE fan than you are

b) PE's music fell the fuck off when it stopped SOUNDING
GOOD. The message was still there. They started to suck
and YOU stopped listening because it SOUNDED LIKE SHIT and
because they lost their *it* factor.

>I'm all for people pushing boundaries and being individuals.

>mindless.

You sound old and bitter.

I don't care what they make. As long as its creative
and sounds good.

that's the point.

And teenage rockers or rappers aren't supposed to be worrying about the overall social ramifications of their music, if they were they wouldn't be teenagers & you wouldn't get music with this kind of borderline nihilistic edge.

But when young white kids do shit like this they're not held responsible for the ills of society the way young blacks kids tend to be.

These kids are having fun being themselves, have undeniable energy, & show major promise in the creativity of their music/presentation/methods-of-getting-their-name-on-the-map.

This group will help more than they hurt, despite the over-the-top vulgarity of the lyrical content.

Wu aged well because it had multiple talented members,
each with their own unique take on the overall theme,
all who contributed to the collective, and had success
on their own

Onyx was Sticky and everyone else. That's why Onyx faded
very quickly.

I think that's where the comparison comes from

People have already said Tyler is sorta like Meth/Gza
and Earl is Raekwon, and what his name is RZA

to be honest I'm not sure many parallels can be drawn on an MC-by-MC basis from there but the rawness & open-the-floodgates feel their ascension brings *feels* very Wu more than it looks or sounds like them ('Wolf Gang' /= 'Wu Tang' chants aside of course).

Nah, you're right. MC to MC comparisons are difficult

The funny thing about the "Wolf Gang" chant is that
the old hater in me wanted to scream "biter" when I
then realized that they are literally too young to
have bitten Wu-Tang. As in, literally. Tyler was NINE
years old this time in 2001. NINE.

Jesus christ.

I mean I don't *feel* old (LA helps me not to) but I realize that I'm heading into the first era (with Tyler's brother) of listening to a kid who I could be old enough to have fathered.

That's crazy when I stop to think about it.

I don't feel old either; I think part of it is that
these kids are legitimate prodigies and welll ahead
of their years. I heard Earl's album and was like "WTF??"
Even as shock rap goes, there is a sophistication
underneath it that a 16 y/o kid shouldn't have.

We've gotten so used to 16-year-old in the rap game sounding like they're touched in the head, that it's easy to forget that some of the greats started off at that age. LL was like 15 or 16 when he did "I Need a Beat." King Tee was recording classic 12"s at that age. Shoot, the Souls of Mischie demos that they recording before graduating high school were insane. It makes me happy to see young cats getting off on the right foot.

All of the people you named are prodigies. LL was a super
prodigy. Nasty Nas was a definite prodigy. I think these
kids are in that class of sophistication and intellect.

but somewhere along the line we got to Lil Romeo & Bow Wow being young vessels for their producers.

The thing that impresses me with OFWGKTA though is not really just the rapping aspect at a young age though, it's the kids being a self-contained unit in terms of the whole package: rapping, production, marketing/branding, all the way down to album artwork & directing their own videos.

The Fallon thing impresses me because really these kids just by the nature of them being so young & web-driven in terms of their small bit of fame thus far really shouldn't be able to come off live yet but they did anyway.

One of the first times it really hit me was when I went to a Wu-Tang back in like 2003. The DJ threw on "Sucker MCs" and I said to my homie that there are probably people up in here who weren't alive when this track dropped." Now, like you said, there's cats making music that weren't alive when the first "Protect Ya Neck" 12" dropped in 1992. I can't even begin to wrap my head around that.

Shit, it fucks my head up enough knowing Juwan Howard has a kid that could soon conceivably play in the NBA.

none of these cats are 'deal rappers reincarnated', so definitely not Wu or NWA.

the earl thing is complex- dude is not there for this rapid metamorphosis, how do you match up when/if you come back?

cats were rocking like $hit tho; i was proud as fook and i don't know notaoneof'em, they are like a distillation of my entire youth experience.

these li'l dudes have gone a long ways in a short time- unfortunately, the nature of today's world of compressed media is 'who?/HOT/*poof*'... but they are moving the needle in a unique manner, like when *blank* first came out.

-focus on the 'first came out' part:

they don't seem to be the creation of a marketing svengali (Pistols)

cats ain't have deals before this deal (Dr. Dre/RZA/GZA)

they young as hell (unlike Chuck/Flav)

The Clash were inspired by the shift in the rules brought about by the Sex Pistols

crazy troubled youth flag-bearers- Suicidal Tendencies?

bastard children of MF Doom?

man, prolly wind up as 'none of the above' if they don't come with new songs that exceed their energy/imagery...

-but i'll be damned if the Sex Pistols have any more than 3 songs that anybody other than a fanatic can name off the top; their whole thing was attitude & energy at the right economic time.

... It looked like something out of "28 Days Later," lol.

But yeah, I'm gonna echo everyone else by saying that was a hell of a performance. I've only been tangentially familiar with OFWGKTA for the past few months, but between this and the "Yonkers" video I'm believing the hype.

i liked the psycho-ward bitch just wandering around...but yall are really overreacting...is shit this bad that yall already crowned these cats as something?
It sounds like eminem to me, but with less skill...the first dude was just yellin...the 2nd dude actually could spit and had some dope lines in there...the beat was dope of course but the roots are playing it, it better be dope...
I don't know, I was just expecting some kind of mind-blowing thing and all i saw was a couple of young rappers with lots of energy, which is great, but is no different than the shit you see at some of your local underground hip-hop shows...
i dig it...i like what they did, but let's not go and say these kids are some kind of music saviors or punk-rock anythings...

No, they are actually that good.

>It sounds like eminem to me, but with less skill...

1) Having less skill than Eminem is not a criticism
at all

2) If you think these kids are not nice on the mic,
you're not listening

2) Eminem is from a different era, when impressing
people with cutesy wordplay and shit was the thing
to do. Its pretty clear that the Odd Future camp
can spit their ass off....the point of their music,
however, is not to have you in awe of the syllable
pattern.

>the first
>dude was just yellin...the 2nd dude actually could spit and
>had some dope lines in there...the beat was dope of course but
>the roots are playing it, it better be dope...

Its a high energy show. Of course the first dude was yelling.
The 2nd dude was change-of-pace, with haunting higher pitched
voice inflection to contrast Tyler's harshness

You act like you've never been to a show before

It worked perfectly

>I don't know, I was just expecting some kind of mind-blowing
>thing and all i saw was a couple of young rappers with lots of
>energy, which is great, but is no different than the shit you
>see at some of your local underground hip-hop shows...

Actually, underground rappers who do weird shit are notoriously
shitty performers, because that kind of music usually doesn't
translate well live

The Kids have stage presence and have inserted a PUNK FEEL
into their music in an effective way

It works

>i dig it...i like what they did, but let's not go and say
>these kids are some kind of music saviors or punk-rock
>anythings...

We get it, you like these dudes. But you are building them up in a very groupie way and straight up attacking anyone who doesn't agree.

Maybe you should try and be their manager or something because GOD damn. With your passion you could probably get them some good deals.

Or just get the adoption papers ready and you can sit in the crowd like a proud dad.

I'm happy you found music you enjoy but take a deep breath. Realize not everyone is going to like it.

I haven't checked enough to have an opinion on them...I am about to. My post wasn't about them, it was about their number one fan and his inability to accept differing opinions.

You are way too emotionally involved in these dudes. Its actually kind of creepy...

I see a restraining order in your future.

And LOL at your increasingly clever "old and bitter" disses for anyone who you feel isn't feeling your boys enough.

Take a deep breath. People are going to have different opinions. Especially on an act like this.

Some people want more substance AND for it to sound good.

No need to go toe to toe with anyone who passes on a polarizing musical act like this.

As I said...relax.

i mean that i haven't really heard anything from them musically that is either unique or aesthetically pleasing. they seem to be more about visuals and shock value. sort of like the first half of clockwork orange translated to black hipster rap. i mean, the production sucks for the most part and none of these niggas are really pushing any envelopes MUSICALLY. it's seems to be more about their weirdo-rebellious vibe than anything.

i just said "white" because usually the whole shtick they use was predominantly relegated to white suburban teens. the whole sacrilegious/violent/misogynistic/inexplicable out of context lyrical rants, etc. it's now becoming more en vogue for the black teen generation i suppose.

don't get me wrong, i'm not really hating but i just don't know what else to call their whole shtick other than a gimmick. if they're around for years to come i'll be the first to eat my words but musically i just don't see anything special about them at present.

with that said, i do like that their doing some left-field shit and i think there's some potential there. i'll still check their music from time to time to see if maybe i've warmed up to it.

This is where you're off

The production far from sucks, and they can rap their asses
off

If you don't hear it, that's your opinion, but to say that
their fans are all about their image is disingenuous.

There are thousands of shock rap acts

THIS ONE got popular

Why?

Because their nice

I started with the tracks that were recommended on a thread on here, Assmilk & VCR and a few others. I didn't like any of em but it was clear they were on some different shit, and I like anybody trying to push the envelope, so I figured I'd keep an eye out for more shit. Then I checked the video for Yonkers, which is a dope video, but I'd never bump the song. Then I checked Earl Sweatshirt's "Earl' album and Tyler's "Bastard' album. Bastard started out mildly promising, the first track is really the only track I've heard by OF that had any hint of any kind of personal shit. From there the album went downhill. I can't say I like any of the beats I've heard, and while Earl has some nice mic skills, and the beats on his album are better than the amateurish sounding beats on Tyler's shit, Earl's album still came off lackluster to me.

I understand why everybody is feeling the vibe of their shit. It's youthful and not-formulaic, they stand out in a sea of mediocre cookie-cutter artists. But as emcees and producers, I can't say I heard some classic track or dope album or insane verse yet. Great performance, but I don't get the hype beyond that.

every artist is spotty. In fact my personal rule is if a cd has at least 3-4 songs i like...i'll cop off the strength.

All i'm saying is these dudes are kids still finding their sound. I respect that. I'm more impressed by the thought of their potential than their current output. I wish them well in the meantime.

Ok, I can't really hate on that

I'm just saying Earl's album was stronger front to
back than most hip hop albums that year

I love these dudes but they're definitely at the point in their career where there best joints are gonna be their next joints, they're starting to hone in on it now (Earl excepted I guess due to being disposed).

He can rap, but Tyler is the real brains -- he knows

In response to Reply # 115

see: Snoop Doggy Dogg, Eminem, 50 Cent, Kanye West

of course, sometimes it goes overboard and the hyped artist never meets expectations. But at least in this case you can see why there's hype in the first place unlike, say, Kid Cudi.
