"a decade of The Lesson : reflections / comments / favorite moments"

10 years have crept up and passed us. There have been alot of highs and lows in this board over time and I think now is a great time to post up and share some of your favorite moments / thoughts about the past, present, and the future of music discussion on this board

here's mine

- 9th's post about meeting Pete Rock - playing beats for Jay-Z - long discussion about the transformation of his tastes and his hate / understanding for *shiny suit* music
- AndrewVS (was it him) hard riding for Animal Collective ( and the sea of backlashed that threw him into oblivion)
- The big threads about Phrenology and The Roots/Common *selling out* in those Coke ads
- A fake Gangstarr remix album post that mentioned Questlove being a remixer, which had him call DJ Premier in order to confirm to the answer of crickets on the phone call
- being put onto Nicolay and his Foreign Exchange "Connected" project
- Jay-Z looking at the boards and being hip to this

I know im missing alot of good stuff ( sorry my memory is pretty bad )

I love The Lesson and its still holds alot of weight in terms of me looking for new music and being turned onto new artists but my biggest gripe is the massive amounts of shockposting and thread derailing as of lates. Come on now folks, lets keep the train on tracks.

Happy Holidays and I wish ya'll a great New Years

PS ?uestlove we miss you man

You don't think I could have put you on to Angst or Slovenly (BTW, pick up Meat Puppets "Up on the sun" while youre at it, you may hate their other records but you'll love this one, trust me EDIT:And "Mirage". My issues with the 80's production values on that album should matter less to you)? Couldn't have chimed in on the Stooges?

I have contributed some stuff to the reviews but never posted in the forums, I just read them (just recently actually, othe4rwise, I would have pointed it out before since you been grumpy as fuck on here for a long time) to get a sense of what type of people his readers are since it's been my favourite review-site on the net since as far as I can remember and this is despite his Miles Davis reviews and his obviously rockist views. The thing that initially attracted me to his site was that he loved the Cows which I didn't think anyone else except me did when I started out on the internet. However, I also noticed that he lacked an anti-metal bias and, *especially*, that he was funny as fuck, like genuinely ROFLMA>O or whatever funny...

And no, I'm not really following you on there or anything, I hope you understand that; it was just an observation...

I think he does have rockist views, but he's also aware of it himself. So it gives some of his more extreme thoughts a bit of self-conscious irony (in a good way).

I still think it's great how he can make a fart joke in one sentence, and the next sentence, say something really insightful about the music.

Most of the folks on the board have a taste for more extreme music than me, but I learn a hell of a lot reading there.

You should join in there.

plenty more arrived around the same time as I did or shortly afterward and have been just as influential on me, my thinking and writing about music, but posts from these ^^^^ guys and gals were the ones that really encouraged me to make the jump from lurker to poster.

It's been a great honor that some of my favorite posters who've arrived in the years since have paid me a similar comment.

cheers!

Robert Johnson Stole, Too
What's so bad about Sting?
The Hip-Hop Laff-A-Lympics

^^^^ three of jeflee's greatest (unarchived) hits. That last one was sheer hilarity, worthy of publication despite jef's idiosyncratic prose style.

from my own keyboard: Great Moustaches of Rock, Songs About Beer, It's the Latest Dance Craze, Q&A: Jamaican Music

AFKAP's had too many good posts, but most of the really controversial ones I sit out on or just interject.

The only two real beefs I've ever had on here: 1) Tek getting angry b/c I didn't like his guitar solo, and said why; 2) somebody whose handle I can't remember telling me never to post about Irish music again b/c I included the Pogues as part of the UK folk scene when asked to compare and contrast the major players in the UK and American roots scenes.

as far as I'm concerned, maxxx's greatest diss ever was about how one poster's mom called him Scope b/c his cum was so minty fresh on her gums... wish I could remember it exactly; somebody had it in his sig for a longass time afterward.

dissident chords!

?uest's post after Doyle Bramhall hit him with a Lomax prison field recording. It was more than cool to see posters getting excited about old shit that's close to my musical heart for a minute there.

DarkStar's original post - 'The Bob Problem' about getting people to realize the breadth of reggae beyond just The Bob. There were some good followup ones (like 'White Folks & Reggae' which is archived) but none as good as the first, if memory serves.

I know there are more...

In response to Reply # 0

There was an eclecticism from the beginning that both drew me in and educated me to no end.

When I joined, I was in high school, pretending to know much more about music than I really did. My musical interests were all over the place, and there weren't many places - online or otherwise - that could both meet me where I was and challenge me to learn more. The Lesson could.

I think that over the years - over the last four to five years, especially - I've learned how little I know, and have taken to lurking and learning a lot more than writing/responding. Although it sometimes seems less consistent, the board's still pretty eclectic/broad in its interests, and has some real knowledgeable folks.

It's been really cool to watch folks develop and change over time, too... and to see some vet posters turned on to new (or new to them) stuff (whether genres or artists).

Some key moments that stick out in my brain:
- there were some great "two seconds" posts made by various folks early on that really got me listening closer... posts where folks threw up their favorite really short sections of a tune that *made* that track what it was (I think I made a few of these myself)

- The Jay-Z/Blueprint II period was definitely interesting and memorable, especially in retrospect (in light of a lot of the developments in mainstream hiphop since then)

- It's been cool to see changes in the way certain acts are perceived (Dave Matthews Band comes to mind...), and how the responses to certain acts are consistent in their inconsistency (Tori Amos comes to mind)

Um.. I might have to come back for some others.

There are two posts that I found pretty amusing, but I'm sure the posters didn't intend them as such and I really hope neither of them would be offended that I brought them up. But I think they do a good job of providing a well-rounded picture of the way this place works.

But I don't want this to turn "poast" as they say in General Depravity. I don't even know if I'm using the term correctly. So I'll be vague:

-An impassioned plea to work on an artists new album. A lovable demonstration of the delusion we all sort of have here, the "I could do it better if I got the chance" mentality. People love Don Quixote for a reason.

-A declaration of someone's favorite artist and an attempt to make him/herself the authority on said artist, that was discarded so quickly, it was comical. It demonstrates the fickleness of music lovers, and how we're not always honest with ourselves when crafting our internet personas.

this one i'm not sure about

so as not to post from a high horse, i'll bring up one of my most embarrassing moments here

not long after i left an IDM message board for good and started reading and posting here more, i saw a post where Steve O Tron said something about boards of canada. i don't remember what else was said between us, but at one point i said something naive and ignorant to him to the effect of, "way to insult the only other person here who knows boards of canada." to his credit, he was quick to lay the smack down and point out that there were more than two of us. duh. it seems so obvious now, but i had a lot more arrogance and aggression when i was younger and would sometimes post stupidly. there is much to be said about lurking and getting a feel for the place and the subject you want to address before blurting anything out.

I chose a screen name and began posting under it. Turns out there was a charter member with the same screen name, spaced or punctuated differently. Anyway after a few posts he shows up and I guess I had my actual name in my profile, because he called me out by my actual name. I panicked and stylez dainty was born. Funny, I haven't seen hid nor hair of him since.

I felt the plan he laid out would have actually worked for the artist.

What made that post funny for me was the persistent heckling by another poster who tried to call out the original poster as delusional for even dreaming that the artist would descend so low as to work with some Leson chucklehead... and yet kept ending his own bitter retorts on the hopeful note of "If the artist is going to work with anybody, it should be ME!"

I didnt make the post...taygravy(ok) made the post suggesting as such...which, naturally, was met with disdain and derision....

someone asked, "well, what WOULD you do?" and I laid out my plan...and since the whole shit would be a feather in my cap and invaluable experience, Id do it for nothing...

then krewcial(where is he?)got his draws in a knot about it....saying that that I COULDNT possibly do it because I hadnt studied with Nadia Bolanger and I didnt know how to deconstruct and repair a Studer tape machine (Im exaggerating for effect but the shit he was saying wasnt far off from that)and that those things are absolutely REQUIRED before I could even get coffee for a band like The Roots

so I pointed out the inaccuracies, both historical and theoretical, in that line of thinking...but yeah, in his own way he definitely expressed that if anyone should get the nod, it should be him

was it embarrassing? sort of, because I knew it would look like how you rmbr it--me begging The Roots for a job--which I never did...but at the same time, if the opportunity presented itself, I'd do it in a heartbeat, even today...

humor posts stick in my mind more; the impact that has been had on me re: music, ideas been gradual over time and difficult for me to pinpoint to specific posts

In response to Reply # 31

The mp3 killed the internet message board discussion?

Eventually, perhaps, but not early on.

I guess the height of "Lesson laziness" now is simply the copying and pasting of a youtube url with no surrounding commentary, but I think it took a while for that laziness to set in.

Circa 2003, even with the growing popularity of soulseek taking shape around the same time as ysi's introduction (then followed by rapidshare and megaupload), I still remember there being hearty discussion about new and old music.

New: I don't think, for better or worse, The Lesson is capable of discussing an album more than The Black Album or Speakerboxxx/The Love Below were.

Old: I recall a decent amount of Brazilian music and Fela making its way into my world with the necessary context also being supplied.

Early on, the link was a privilege and then supplementary to a post. The "idea" was still king, but then slowly the link won over and soon suffocated most hope for discussion.

There were the mp3 request posts that slowly morphed into people just posting random mp3s daily, sorta aping music blogs, which might have been the beginning of the end. You download a million things, because they're available and we're music hoarders one way or another, and your HD fills up; consequently, you lose the will to comment on anything because of how over-saturated your playlists have become.

As far as outside influences, blogs did The Lesson no good, in terms of discussion. Active posters found homes elsewhere or "link and leave" habits were picked up and copied here.

I also think the monthly artists posts had a more negative impact than a positive one, no matter how well-intentioned they were initially.

That being said, The Lesson turned me on to more songs, albums, and artists than one can imagine. I can't be mad.

i've been harsh on the lesson these last few weeks and months, but you said it all

>consequently, you lose the will to comment on anything because
>of how over-saturated your playlists have become.

in recent years i've tried to go back to old topics and leave my comments after listening (and try to start or restart an actual conversation) just to combat that and encourage music to be treated as less transient and fleeting

>As far as outside influences, blogs did The Lesson no good, in
>terms of discussion. Active posters found homes elsewhere or
>"link and leave" habits were picked up and copied here.

that's one reason why i've not started a blog or written professionally about music, even though it's frustrating when i do put effort into posting here and get crickets

>That being said, The Lesson turned me on to more songs,
>albums, and artists than one can imagine. I can't be mad.

it's very important for those of us with criticism to keep all we've gained in mind as well

before brazen linking in posts, y'all were inboxing each other links no? or posting burned cds to each other? same diff. i think the link can still be conducive to hearty convo, doesn't mean the fundamental nature of The Lesson has to change. just means we can discuss and playback (at our leisure) the music in question. it's the posters themselves that choose to get lazy with it. the LINK is just gravy. it doesn't automatically lead to lazy posting or a degeneration in whatever rose-coloured-glasses view u guys had of this place.

i think the boards can change with the times but still remain viable for 'hearty discussion' (sorry i think im in luv with the word 'hearty' at the moment). these days posting about new music without at least A link (doesn't have to be an mp3, YouTube is usually the goer) is tantamount to cockteasing.

i didn't look at what he was saying from a piracy standpoint but rather as a replacement for conversation. nowadays it really does seem like "here's a link to the song" instead of "this song is _________" (insert interpretation, significance, background, whatever would be said about it before youtube and file sharing sites). i don't really disagree with the rest of what you said. the posters are the problem, not the technology. unfortunately, we live in lazy, dumbed-down times.

and by the criticism of the lesson nerdery rehashed in another recent topic

i'm not feeling nostalgic so i won't linger on this, but one of the things i love about and that makes this place special is that there are people here who think about and love deeply artists i don't know anyone in "real life" who cares or knows so much about and artists who don't seem to have lasting and universal recognition. i'm talking about artists who seem obvious and big to the people of the lesson that are sold short in music journalism and by award ceremonies, artists whose exposure on the radio is limited or niche at best and often nonexistent (i don't think i've ever heard fela outside of public and college radio, for just one example), and perhaps as a result of these things aren't widely embraced outside of fans of the respective genre and often seem to be taken for granted or unfairly dismissed. the conversations here over the years have made me give a real listen and think critically about and appreciate so many artists i might not have ever approached the same way without the lesson, and i'm grateful for the music that has in turn enriched my life. i have the same favorite genres as i did before i discovered #thissite, but the specific artists, my knowledge base, and the way i analyze and appreciate music have been greatly influenced by my time here, and the humor and camaraderie have affected me in subtle but deep ways as well.

good time.

also, the recent "beat-offs" are memorable and I will not be surprised if someone replies "why did you use that name for the competition?" haha

still working with those beats for anyone interested. I have 5/14 songs recorded but nothing has been final mixed and as soon as something is I will send the songs to the producer of the track before I release the whole project on here.

I'll separate it into a few categories:

my favorite posts ( and post related moments)-

"Bilal takes a shit"
"Mawxell Sings for the bitches"
"Enroll at Neo-Soul University"
"2 seconds"
The (Original) Friday Fun Posts

and some of the recurring moments

-fire vs AnaStezia
'KAP vs Warren Coolidge ( but unlike nowadays, BOTH of these cats were dropping science AND staying on topic.)
-when newbies would come in and say something REALLY dumb and get flamed out for it. Not that we went out of our way to burn Newbies, but it kept people from posting up stupid or inflammatory shit.
-in the days before links, when we used to mail tapes and CD's to each other

and I just want to thank those of you who have contributed and shared music with the rest of us:

MistaMonotone ( The "I Like White People" set still gets burn)
Warren Coolidge ( "The Seven Seals of James Brown" is legendary. If they sold it in stores, it might rival "Star Time")
Ally Al ( his podcasts are amazing)
tREBLEFREE (tREBLEFREE R&B is that bidness)

and a bunch of other heads who I can't remember...but thanks

I have a Dalek CDR that someone sent me as an trade for a D&B mixtape (cassette) I made. I listened to it once, didn't like it... but I still have it.

That must've been in 2000, if not 1999.

even though I don't post here as much, I do value the posts and convos folk have here...

The Animal Collective was particularly fun...

And I (mostly) like Kweli as a rapper.

The person who posted the link was ImRickJamesBitch, and I remember Kweli coming on here and referencing dude by that name, which I laughed quite long at.

Also, I believe dude just posted a link he got from somewhere else, probably rapidshare or megaupload link or something, but Kweli went on like he was the one who actually bootlegged the album originally, and no one could convince him otherwise.

So I just faded away slowly.

I always thought the people who pulled that "SCREW YOU GUYS FOR NOT REPLYING TO MY POSTS, I'M LEAVIN'!!" shit were pathetic, so I just took the hint and faded away. I had (and have) no way of knowing who actually checks for the stuff I release online, and I don't do it for props - I do it to share and incite discussion, like most art's purpose should be.

I've been back a little since I came out and I do reply here and there to certain posts.

Aside from all of that, there have been MANY memorable verbal fights and love fests during my time here, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. The Lesson is responsible for me having the best adult friends I've had in the last 10 years of my life, and I'm grateful to ?uest & Angieeeee for creating this place. Yeah, I've grown older and more reflective of where my life is going, but I don't regret not one keystroke, rant or argument I had on here.

In response to Reply # 0

a few that i can remember:

-JefLeeJohnson. can't remember over what (as with most of em), but i do remember thinking i knew more than him about some band. he, of course, sonned me.
-Ascension. i think it mighta been Dilla related. we went at it randomly in posts. i think i once told him to "get off my dick" lol.
-buildingblock. but really, who hasn't? lol.
-and i THINK i probly had a go at Afkap once, but was most-likely also sonned. u tend to learn pretty quickly who not to shit-stir once u stop lurking n start posting.

most of these happened mid-2000s (i joined in late 99 or early 2000, cant remember, so i was still a bit fresh). n when i started smokin weed fulltime in 2007 i just mellowed the fuck out from then on. learned from the online scuffles a LOT tho. nowadays i keep my emotions in check cos keyboard heroism is very played. and lame.

random memories:

-i loved how after the first ever Roots concert in Melbourne, Australia in 2006, when they invited everyone to hit the afterparty to see ?uest spin a set, and the club were being douchebags and not letting anyone in, and then i posted bitching about it and got an apology from ?uest himself (even tho he had the flu as well, wat a nice guy freal lol).

-the appearance of mistermaxxx. i almost feel like i need Michael Cage to re-tell his arrival ("..like a storm buildin on the horizon, and when he rain down he rain doowwnn ON you....turkey"). he's pretty much a legend around here NOW, but i gave him that status years ago when he MAILED ME 3 cassette tapes full of his own songs n jams. it was amazing. eventually people converted it to mp3 and made a big post, ppl were wiggin OUT lol. and here lies the crazy dichotomy of maxxx: while u think he may be certifiable, he consistently pulls out some of the most succinctly awesome nuggets of info relating to music history (it's in between all the name-calling, for which he is also legendary).

-i remember publicly declaring that i had finally pieced together my Naked Music collection and converted majority of it to mp3 (downloaded the ones i couldnt buy to fill the gaps) and was giving it away to anyone who added me on Soulseek. it was a dumb thing to do but i was just so damn excited lol. anyways not even 24hrs later i get a very long email from one Mr. Jay Denes (aka Blue Six) to my hotmail account explaining to me how my actions are hurting his business. and it WORKED. i think from then on i realised i had to contain my fucking excitement and not go on a share frenzy, specially when it's got to do with smaller boutique labels like Naked Music...Jay's threat to sue me at the tail-end of the email also might've been a factor lol. the only mystery that remained was who dropped dime on me. and i got a FEELING it was disco_dj/Sean cos i remember him posting this reply to my "NM free-for-all" poast: ":/". dunndunnDUNNNNNN.

here's the thing tho. i feel like i been pretty involved in The Lesson for a LONG time now. i always felt the amount of musical talent just from us FANS was pretty freekn good enuf to be heard, and thus The Lesson Mixtapes were born to showcase that. and i post up mixes every now n then. so i LIKE to think im one of the so-called 'tastemakers' around here (but in a real subtle way lol). but i never felt like i got to KNOW okps that well? there's a level of interaction that's missing from The Lesson that i guess i see more of in GD. then again i think its partly my fault too. i came back fulltime recently cos i feel like ive grown up a lot in terms of thought-structure, musical palette and just in general. i feel like i got more to offer OKP now than i ever did. and lately ive gotten to know more OKPs on Facebook, which is nice cos u get some interaction with the faces behind the names and ppl seem more REAL when u talk to em here. i hope that continues throughout my v2.0 crack at being a fulltime okp.

i guess lastly, no matter how bad things seem they get around here, it's always gonna be our e-home. and if the stalwarts didn't stick around and keep posting, then it WOULD go to complete shit. so thanks to the Charters (and a buncha post-Charters) who still bless The Lesson with science and knowledge. i'm always learning bout somethin new from here (and most of the times i hear bout it here FIRST). i and finally i love how even if our favourite artists are posting n if they get out of line, OKP doesn't give a fuck, we'll knock em off watever ego-inflated high they're on lol. it's quite fun to watch.

...from 99-2006, you're probably looking at 4-6 hours a day, and I'm still on here a few times a day at least! I can't remember specific posts really, but okp has been a great place to hang out and bullshit on the daily for over a decade.. Big ups to ?uestlove for being an innovator and making this place(the boards) a reality.. i hope he got some satisfaction from his creation (even if we're pains in the asses sometimes)

Met some cool peoples on here over the years.. a few I got to met in the real world.. and a few i still consider fam today.. Shout out to you all..

lastly.. gotta give thanks to the thousands of people who downloaded my mixtapes the last few years from the links on these boards.. I honestly never expected that kind of interest.. hopefully I'll have some more shit for you in 2011 and beyond.. peace

A MUCH different climate than today....

Kweli coming on here and assing himself out was great. I think 2 weeks after he tried to go head to head with DJ 3rd Rail (over Kweli "no showing" for the radio show), one of his tour managers dumped a white girl in a trashcan at The Ritz in Raleigh....THAT of course was a gossip goldmine on here.....

Same with Lupe. After reading his bullshit on here, I've never bought a single album of his....and I think he's a talented artist.

"woggle" was my favorite alias of all time. I've never seen anyone get so uptight about Eminem. Shit was hilarious.

"stress" hooking up the free backstage passes from time to time was a great perk of being a part of this....I was glad to know her before "The Broke Diaries" dropped and her new gig on "Scrubs" pulled her away from here.....

I was even a member of the "street team" which....I think for my "welcome package" I got an okayplayer.com t-shirt, 10 fliers, and 5 stickers...lol! They were gone in about 4 minutes. Then, I never heard another thing about the street team.

The "Okayplayer Presents" album was pretty huge.....I remember going into the record store with friends and pulling that album out going, "Hey, I know that guy...and that guy....and that guy...."

I remember the start of those retarded ass "poll posts".....when they became available I think everyone had about 4 poll posts going at once.....a few were good - most were pointless.

alls ill say is i got to hang out with her and her dude when i was in LA, n her dude sorta hinted at somethin not being quite right with the way she parted with okp, n that she doesnt like talking about it (so i didnt probe further). from the little bit he said bout it, *i* got the impression she was fucked over somehow (in terms of being one of the founders of this website) possibly financially? or in fine print? ahdano. all of it seemed a bit suss, tho.

and I recall anytime I'd get an inbox from her complimenting me on a particularly good post or reply I made (happened maybe 2/3 times before she bounced, the OG Mos Def 'Rock & Roll' post being the only specific one that comes to mind) it'd be like receiving a gold star from your teacher in elementary school.

Haven't seen her in person since the early 5 Spot Black Lilly days (when we both lived in Philly & now both live in LA) but stress was cool.

Out of touch? Yes?

Because of technology? No.

I hope no one takes my next comment out of context because I really feel like were all fam here -

Buuuuuut.....at some point, it got more and more difficult to sift through the threads looking for stimulating convos.

Its all par for the course though. As the board grew in popularity, more and more members came around and I felt that as I got older - the boards got younger. The posters that the boards saw at the beginning started posting less and less and soon I felt like the "old guy."

I guess I just enjoyed the boards more when they had that "little pond" feel to them......

dont remember the last time i posted (never posted that much even in the earlier days)... or even logged in to be honest... been a lurker for 4-5 years but not even interested in writing anymore. it really is more difficult to find a good convo, not to say they arent there though.

i'll just keep all the great music i found through here, first living in Greece, now living in Qatar.. theres no music scene to be a part of and it's always been a great source of ALL TYPES of music to pick from.

I'm glad yall kept beating the drum for Leave It All Behind because I didn't dig Connected like everyone else did. However, once I saw the video for House of Cards (on here) and remembered all the praise I copped. Love it still to this day. What an album.

The Talib Kweli posts were always epic for me. My girl wonders why I laugh so hard when his name is in some mess and I just shake my head. She doesn't understand the history.

R.Kelly won because there is no COmpetition. he destroyed all of the Competition. R.kelly was So Soulful on Soul train and Jimmy Fallon that He sang the black off the Keys and He made Jimmy Fallon even WHiter than he was. he scurred the Whitness off of him.

I Won because I'm my favorite Poster and Love my Posts. the Humor and balance is classic.

as long as I speak my mind and got turkeys tweakin, then I won. hilarity times 3.

i like a few folks on here, the ones who speak there mind and aren't cut from the OKP Mob or stuck on sponges.

i enjoy good debates and conversations and don't take things personal. I have a good sense of humor and balance.

here way back when MTV was celebrating Cody for being homeless and singing with raw emotion. Anywho, he was overrated and despite the hype, the headphone masterpiece was not a masterpiece nor a headphone. But Afkap is one of the most knowledgeable dudes on the boards about music and I used to crack up at the lengths that he would go to for his man (and intentionally discredit his opinions by saying he was record store clerk, which would everyone once in awhile elicit a reaction). 1999-2002 was my favorite time on this site and stupid exchanges like that made it a lot of fun.

I'll never forget how... "irate"? nah... more like "bewildered" I got when you would try to use my record store job to insult me (I was a manager, not a clerk, by the way!) I think I even sent you an inbox trying to explain to you how wrong you were for that.

It's not that I was offended per se, but I just couldn't understand how anybody could possibly think working in a record store was NOT the coolest job ever! I deliberately got that job after-hours as an oasis away from the tedium of my corporate job... and I miss the fuck out of it (and record stores in general) now!

anyone remember donnan linkz? still my favourite artist to post his stuff in the lesson. he came through at first pretending to be talib kweli's brother to get people to listen to him. and after he gave up and admitted it and cut through the bullshit his stuff was really dope, had one track called 'broken record' that i still listen to to this day. just checked my itunes and got his record 'hood times' on there. wonder if he ever made it.

edit: just found this.. still like him... voice hasnt changed.. he's the first dude

But I'll forever be indebted to this board for opening me up to tons of great music (and even more tons of crap, but I digress...) and keeping me involved in plenty of time-killing discussions on all things hip hop and beyond.

AFKAP/Orfeo and MANHOODLUM's posts were always must-reads for me.
