I finally got around to spinning this Roots record a couple times…and what is really good with this dude?

Does he have a poster of Nate Dogg behind his closet door that he stamps a kiss on after getting dressed to head to the studio?

He turned the first half of this album into drunk karaoke night with Dice and friends.

it started on Game Theory, and it was cool because it was something new and wasn't over-used.

Then on Rising Down it started to become a problem.

and now this shit?

and this dude isn't even an official member of the group!

I'm just really curious as to why Thought's role has been getting more and more thin?

With the Fallon Show gig, you'd think he'd be out in the front more especially if they're going to have some singing involved on the hooks since he sings on the show all the time.

I just don't get it man…all these damn guest spots and then here comes Dice to take over EVERY hook for 5 straight songs off the jump.

as soon as the hook to How I Got Over came in, I just had to shake my head and laugh because the whole thing seemed like a damn joke to me.

Either let Black Thought do it or call Erykah or another real vocalist.

Only two real complaints with HIGO; Dice on the hooks and that "Hustla" joint

I laughed out loud at the listening party when "Now Or Never" came on.

strike two was the stretch of somber downtempo songs/and ?uest's Ralph the Dog Muppet hook on "Radio Daze".

strike three was the title track.

I even like the John Legend songs, but the first half of the album gets skipped due to Dice Raw's crooning.

half good?

I wouldn't nominate the guy for vocalist of the year or anything but it's not like they've got Eminem singing on the hooks or something. I like him on the hooks actually.

Then again, I don't listen to any music that involves much singing so maybe my standards are lower.

Dice was pretty horrid on it. Walk Alone and Radio Daze were ok. he's more tolerable when he switches his voice up. Thought destroys How I Got Over enough that Dice doesn't ruin it.

Thought's already proven he's capable of singing, and they got a good singer in Cap Kirk that i'm just as confused as you.

Dice sounds terrible on Now or Never. it's cringeworthy. the rest of the songs are easier on the ears. i actually like him on Radio Daze and Walk Alone, and didn't realize it was him until Now or Never came on. i think Thought or Kirk would've done much better on that track.

He was on the track as well. He could've done his Dwele shit, harmonized and make that hook sound crisp. That's if they wanted to make it better. Personally, Dice on the hook doesn't bother me.

...about "H.I.G.O." album, The Roots is trying to appeal to a new audience they have and what people are digging right now which is rappers who can half-ass sing and (H.I.)G.etting O.ver (ex: Cee-Lo, Lil Wayne, Drake, B.O.B. are you starting to see the trend?)

I'm not saying the album is bad but it's not my vibe, I downloaded it, I listened to it, I'm still going to purchase it on vinyl but not anytime soon (since it wasn't as good as I thought it would be).

I'm just hoping that when The Money Making Jam Boys finish up their album then we can have something to be proud of in BT & them.

Cee-lo is actually an accomplished singer my man. The rest of them
really are "half ass singers" like you say. Kinda disrespectful to
lump him in with those cats.

It's lots more but I can't think of them right now since I try to stay away from music like that, they should leave the singing to Nate Dogg, Dwele, & K.Rells for hooks.

You sound like you're mad that you can't sing, lol.

If a guy can outsing 90 percent of the R&B world, why would he get
another guy to sing his hooks? i.e. Cee-lo and Aloe Blacc
Just because EVERYBODY wants to sing and rap now doesn't mean that
those who are actually good at it should stop.

Just because a guy is talented enough to sing AND rap doesn't mean
he's half-assing one of them. That's like saying Michael Jackson was
a half ass dancer because he could also sing or saying Prince is a half
ass guitar player because he also plays piano. GTFOHWTBS.

i think you have it backwards...rappers are just trying to do it themselves and feeling more comfortable singing than they have in the past. people have always been into sung hooks though...its not new.

if method man had tried singing in like 95 people would've called him a sellout or soft...thats not the case anymore so more people feel alright doing it themselves. its what 50 dissed ja rule for doing even though he went on to do it himself moments later.

he is clearly a non-singer but it comes across almost rockish 'cause that's how alot of rockers sound to me. like they're just ordinary people trying to sing their hearts out in the shower. and i kinda like that sound when it's done well.

pretty much consider him a Root anyway.

So he doesn't even really count if we're talking features.

'Doin It Again' doesn't suffer as much because they bury his vocal sample enough it almost sounds like something more alien & interesting.

But there's no saving it on 'The Fire'.

nigga sound like TJ Markie. ol' Biz Swan ass nigga.

shit's catchy after a while, but he's by no means a good singer. Now or Never was mad painful/offputting upon the initial listen. that nigga came in sharp and flat at the same time. it's remarkable, really.

i'm astounded that Kirk doesn't get the nod for hooks.

Dice Raw's contribution to HIGO are pretty much all great, and perfectly fit the theme of this record. I feel like I never really appreciated dude at all, and actually found him pretty corny up until GT. But with HIGO, its like the Roots finally found the absolute perfect use for him, and he kills it!

Black Thought is a great MC, one of the greatest...but I am happy that the album isn't all him. I'm not one for excessive guest appearances in general, but the Roots really seem to always nail it when they have them. All of the guests add to the tracks they are on. I'm glad BT is humble enough to recognize that he doesn't have to be the center of attention on every track...I think its why he's so consistent. He recognizes his strengths and flaws better then most MC's, and that's why he's got a great career going 15 years later.

HIGO is just a great, great record to me...I would argue that it is one of the Roots best in terms of making a complete record. Its very cohesive, and Dice fit perfectly.

STS was probably the weakest MC on this project, so yeah, you caught me there. But I feel like "Right On" is still a monster track! First time I heard it I kept in repeat a good 7-8 times. His verse wasn't spectacular, but didn't bother me. His flow suited the track.

i think that is the problem moreso than Dice's Nate Dogg hooks.

i mean, you got one of the best/rawest MC's left in the game and the last 2 albums are more singing hooks, smoothed out on an r&b tip type grooves, and cameo appearences by other MC's

i just want to hear a Roots album where it just some raw hip-hop, rapped-out hooks, and Black Thought on all of the songs, save for about 2-3.

yeah, i know, go listen to IlladelphHalflife, but...sh*t

hearing joints like Boom!, 75 Bar's, etc. over the years just got you wanting more (no pun, homo) from Black Thought.
