"Artists Who Turned You Off With Their Live Performance....."

Since there is so much talk today in here and GD about JE's lackluster live performance, and the other pretty recent news about how Whitney's concerts are a total mess, let's discuss....

As for me:

1. Amel Larrieux - way back in the day when Infinite Possibilities dropped, I saw her at a now defunct venue in D.C. First off she pissed the crowd off with the whole diva thing.

Doors opened at 8, opening act went from 8:30 to 9:00. She didn't bring her ass on stage until like a quarter to 11, and she was in the damn building.

But the real pisser is that she did that annoying ass scatting at the end of EVERY SONG. She did it at the end of Get Up, like you hear on the cd, but then she did it at the end of EVERY SONG, fast or slow for like an additional three minutes each. The end of every song turned into 2-3 minute scat fest, and most of us were just waiting for the next song. Most of the crowd was turned off too as most people were grumbling about the performance at the end of the show.

2. Mos Def - Don't get me wrong, I'm still a Mos fan. Saw him at the 9:30 shortly before The Estatic dropped. Second show was delayed by like an hour and a half. He did a good show except for some dumb ass sound clash he had his two dj's do. It took up like a good 30 minutes of an already delayed show. If I wanna hear dj's spin old reggae and hip hop, I'll go to a dj night.

Rap muthafugga! Not one of the best hip-hop shows I've been to. What made it worse is hearing how good some of his other shows around the country were around that time. I felt like D.C. got shorted.

Add on.....

Buju is that dude, but in concert? He SUCKS.

He's ALWAYS late, and he runs through his shit at 100MPH. Not to mention he spends most of his time letting the audience sing the lyrics...

I've tried. Multiple times. Never Again... ( But then again, it'll be a looooooooong time before dude does a concert...)

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/12/14/buju-banton-arrest-reggae_n_391471.html

MIAMI — Jamaican reggae star Buju Banton is facing a drug charge in Florida.

Banton, whose real name is Mark Anthony Myrie, has been in U.S. federal custody in Miami since Thursday.

Drug Enforcement Administration spokesman David Melenkevitz said Sunday that Banton was arrested on a charge of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute more than five kilograms of cocaine. The charge stems from a DEA case in Tampa.

An e-mail to Banton's independent record label was not immediately returned Sunday.

Banton's ninth album, "Rasta Got Soul," is nominated for a Grammy. The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation launched an online petition protesting the nomination, saying some of Banton's earlier lyrics have advocated violence against gay people.

I heard Wayne was high as Manute Bol's hairline at our Homecoming concert, and that he was backstage being paranoid as hell. They said people waited ALL NIGHT for his performance, and he came out and SUCKED....said he just mumbled half his songs and seemed out of his mind.

her response..."I don't like movies"

WHAT THEE FUCK - only thing weirder would be "I don't like music"

But her reasoning was "I'm a bio major - I don't have enough time for all that."

the way she said it was was on a pompous/pretentious ish

COME ON SON..........I wanted to asked her if she was stupid and needed extra study time, cause I've watched movies with bio majors

Most of it sounds better on record for me. I enjoy Jazz and even Gospel/Soul concerts better that have live bands, probably b/c my dad is a Jazz drummer and I love seeing the chemistry between the live musicians and how they improvise on site. Rap concerts are more about the whole image and fan/stannery of it to me. Of course I love DJ'n concerts, but I just don't enjoy being in the crowd too much, seeing them recite the same lines but at a screaming voice. I enjoy seeing some 80's and early 90's acts, but most recent acts have wack shows to me...and I am 5'4, so I hate standing in a crowd to see them LOL.

I'm biased of course, but I love seeing Murs perform, and even the homie T-Pain b/c of his energy. But 90% of the artists I listen to sound better on record, when it comes to Rappers and modern R&B.

I heard bad things about Ghostface but he came out on time and rocked a 2 hour set in the middle of Nebraska, so FOH with that. Bonus points for convincing a non-smoking club to allow blunts and nem.

But Keri HIlson just murdered everyone's ears at this Hip Hop Honors. Damn, I'm glad I'm not some middle school girl in Atlanta that thinks Ms. Keri is the shiiiiiiit. I'd be so depressed.

On the other hand.....when N.E.R.D. performed before Kanye a couple years back, He was really good...but it was a band setting so they were all good and could have overshadowed his lack of whatever was lacking.

I haven't seen to many hiphop/rap concerts simply because they never sound nearly as good as cd quality, whereas BANDS that are good live sound almost identical to the CD quality ..

I'm sorry but most rap concerts consist of bad speakers where the BASS is turned up WAY TO LOUD so I can't even hear the lyrics...

And then on top of that, there are like 5 guys yelling every other word into a mic......so You can't even vibe out to the Original artists lyrics because some other "random guy" is up there thinking he is sweet just yelling random words into a mic all night...

We as paying fans deserve better than what most rap concerts give us....

And I've only been to a few.....but I can imagine a high percentage being almsot identical to what I mentioned.

Common live was real good though......real good.....although I've heard otherwise by somepeople, but at Royal Oak music theatre he was killin it....

De la was there too.....allthough they had the bass turned up way to high so I could not hear 1 single lyric.....

I couldn't even differenciate between some of their songs....

That was the Speakers fault, but I would have actaully loved to hear what De la had to say.....

Can't complain though, somehow I snuck up to 10ft from stage for a bit....

gotta say despite how much i like there records, gotta say Outkast

because Live with them fronting with instruments and whatnot in the videos and pictures and seeing that thing live didn't move me.

Usher yeah he is entertaining, but he never has upgraded his thing and I won't check him out live anytime soon. barely can tolerate his thing in the studio now.

Green Day bores me live and I don't get it at all.

Coldplay they is boring and overrated Live. I don't get it.they can't sing and play ole folks Muzak.

I saw them live late 90's (After their initial success burned out but before they started wearing make-up and pretending to be political) and they had a good amount of energy. The only complaint I'd have for them is they can be really cheesy but their sound wasn't too bad nor and they have a good amount of songs to choose from.

when did you see them?

Not saying they couldn't be boring but just haven't heard that from ppl.

I'd see him again.

Ghost is usually good but he had a Diva moment at TLA in Philly a few years ago. We didnt even stay around to see him perform. Left at 1am.

I have to disagree. I've seen hundreds of shows. Everytime I've seen Gza, whether it was w/ Wu Tang when Liquid Swords actually dropped back in like 95ish or the 4 times I've seen him solo, including at Pitchfork, when he performed all of Liquid Swords, he was ALWAYS tight.

Wu Tang a whole can be very hit or miss. Sometimes they are ill. Sometimes they kind of suck.

you cannot front on that show.

I've actually been having surprisingly good success with rap shows recently as the music gets older, the veteran acts start to polish their show, and the focus on live performance gets more crucial for the bottom line in the face of today's DL'ing world.

KRS killed the Roxy a couple months back.

Nas/Damian Marley's show the other weekend was better than I could have hoped for as well: http://board.okayplayer.com/okp.php?az=show_topic&forum=5&topic_id=2379685&mesg_id=2379685&listing_type=search

I used to really ride for dude, but after seeing him live, I really feel detached from him.

He performed his opening 3 or 4 songs fairly lazily, then he turned his back on the crowd for about 5 minutes and smoked a cigarette while the band played and the crowd looked on confused; then he stormed off after 'Sometimes' knocking the mics over and didnt return for about 10-15 minutes - bless the band, they huddled for a few seconds then jammed while the backing singers sang a song or two; When he did return, he was bare-chested and later lay on his back with his hand down his trousers eating a peach 'singing' "oh girl I want you to sit on my face ... I want you to f##k my face".

I spent the whole night apologising to my wife that we didn't get the awesome performance I had promised her. He really lost me as a fan that night.

Talib...which was weird because i'd seen him before and he was awesome. i didnt stop liking him because of the show but that show stands out as the beginning of the end of my fandom. i dont evne think it was his fault really...the venue sucked and the group before him was so bad...he also took 8 years to come out on stage. after that, he never released anything that i really liked so he basically went from one of my favorite rappers to someone i didnt care much for after that show.

Mos
came to earhlink round new danger time...this nigga came 3 HOURS late g!! he was so late the DJ had ran outta records and pulled out a fucking cd book and started spinning random cds.Mos didnt even go on until damn near 1:30am. He rocked it but that was some bs

Jeru
came to apache got shit faced and hopped on stage during my man Flux's(Binkis) show who rocked prior. He was killing it too much guess cause Jeru just hopped on stage and had stood in the back smirking and shit..then when his set started slurred thru his shit i walked out. The promoters issued an apology on his part talking about he would come back and rock for free..that was last year..

saw her in a small live music oriented club/lounge (RIP Temple Bar in Santa Monica, miss that spot) around the corner from my place which seemed like I'd struck gold having a legit show half a block from the crib.

When she was getting ready to go on the place all the sudden was dark as night inside (I didn't at that point know about her 'light sensitivity' issues) and it was a bit crowded not to the point of discomfort or anything but it's always a weird being in a crowd of people when your visibility is nearly nonexistent.

No worries, I use other folks' panic at being in the dark for 10-15 minutes as an opportunity to work my way up to the front to the point where I'm now in the front-row left.

Band's setting up, I'm pumped, they start getting some sort of little groove together and then onstage walks Me'shell, looking like a homeless woman that had just gotten woken up from a nap in an alcove out from a building out on Wilshire.

Okay, she's obviously unconcerned with fashion, I'm still ready for a dope show.

The crowd has a good share of Stan types like the ones you might see here and then even some of that special kind of obsessives that LA seems to breed. Cheering, hooting, hollering, etc.

I'm waiting for her to step to the mic & say something in acknowledgement but instead she just grabs her bass and makes her way over towards the drum set. Occassional glance to a bandmate with an almost expressionless face.

She then turns her back directly away from the audience and goes to play bass right in front of the stage-right speaker like she's Miles Davis.

And much like Miles, she's playing all instrumental music for the next 30 minutes or so, but unlike Miles I don't think anyone in the crowd was expecting that (I think Comfort Woman had been her last release at that point, which is the album I was bumping gearing up for the show just before) nor is this some In A Silent Way level shit we're hearing.

The jams were just okay, a little bit self-indulgent & meandering but perhaps that was just me picking up on the utter disinterest from the lead performer who seemed to be treating the show like it was a soundcheck.

As this goes on & people begin to get a bit restless standing in darkness while they're hearing mediocre jazz while the performer's back is turned to them, she does eventually step to the mic to sing on a song although it appears to be one that neither I nor most there recognize and her voice is so feint that I would have blamed it on the sound system if it weren't for the fact that she was directly in front of me singing so light & whispery that I couldn't even hear her from about a foot and a half away.

At this point I'm starting to be over it but stick it out for a bit longer. A couple of friends unfamiliar with her work that I'd talked into meeting me there had already come and gone (they weren't as invested & therefore hadn't made the trek to the front with me).

I walked outside to get away from the crowd, the dark, grab some air because it'd been getting hot, and then proceeded to smoke a cigarrette while talking to a girl I meet outside doing the same.

We both end up going on about our dissapointment with the show while having our smoke & by the end of it have a look on our face of going back into class after recess has ended. Just before we are about to enter the door I make what I think is a fair point that we don't really *have* to go back inside. I can see a wave of relief come across her face & we head to the bar across the street instead.

I guess we can credit Meshell for the bond developed by two strangers over her shitty show, the rest of the evening was much better than however long I was watching her (felt like three hours, probably was more like 55 minutes).

but the band actually started off pretty damn on point. did a redunkulous abbreviated version of Mile's "on the corner" and than some songs which i later heard on Devil's Halo. after 25mins though, they digressed exactly into the territory ur talking about and i felt the same

with a hoodie over her head & back turned to the audience while they worked their way through instrumental passages endlessly onstage was not what anyone there was looking for, although "On The Corner" (or some Miles/Mingus or familiar jazz cover might have helped for what they were doing).

I don't know if I've just been lucky with her shows - I've certainly heard a lot of horror stories - but every show I've seen has been top notch (four at this point).

Her band always kills it. Her setlist has always been tight, pretty diverse in sound and tempo. And she's always been pretty humble and gracious (again, not like some of the horror stories).

Three of the four shows I've seen were definitely on the shorter side though...

Saw him in 2000 or 2001 after Stillmatic dropped.

I was stunned at dude's lack of breath control. He could barely finish a bar w/o a hypeman.
He had like 20 people onstage. It was chaos.

Mos: Saw dude at Rock the Bells two years ago. No energy. Bad song selection (did a bunch of shit from Tru Magic). His singing was trash. It's funny because I'd seen him before and he'd never been bad.

DJ Premier: Saw him spin last Wednesday. He talked waay too much and talked after EVERY song. No cohesiveness to his set at all. Just one song then more talking.

Ive seen Nas 3 times and only one of those times was sub-par. The other 2 (Right after HHID and last summer with Damien Marley) were amazing with Nas killing it. During his braveheart tours apparently he was the worst (Going by what ppl say here and videos I've seen) but he must have seen a drop in concert sales or just got feedback from the audiences b/c he doesnt do that anymore. And haven't heard much if any poor reviews for him in the last 3 or 4 years.

Mos Def was great to see live at RTB last year. I blame the crowd more them him b/c he was doing great, but they wanted Black Star (Talib was at RTB too) & BOBS and were shouting that during his set. This was right after Ecstatic dropped so I can understand ppl not knowing everything but he did "Auditorium" killed his verse AND did Slick Rick's verse and ppl were still complaining. Nothing pisses me off more than ppl at concerts that ONLY want to hear "their songs", will stand there crossed armed, not doing anything until "their songs" come on and then go right back to being a bitch. Just stay home and listen to the album

go on until midnight at a lot of shows, even if the doors are at 8 and no opener. I can understand the hate for that especially on a work night but I expect that from most hip hop performers so I never have that problem.

I saw them at Lolla 08 and they sucked hard. Stopped listening to the album shortly after b/c of the bad taste the performance left with me, plus I already been playing the shit out of it since Feb when it came out and then they blew up so it was everywhere.

I loved the 2nd album and heard they got better towards the end of the last tour so I checked them out at Coachella and they were great. But that first performance had me not listening to them for like a year and a half.

... Granted, I've never been too big of a fan of theirs, but I thought they were terribly boring at Coachella. I know some people who actually ARE fans of their records who went to see them recently and left early, and various music blogs have ripped them on this tour.

were hipsters and casual fans leaving b/c they didn't play "Kids" (even though they played "Time to Pretend" and "Electric Feel"). This isn't just an assumptions, this is what I heard from most of them as they left in droves 2/3 into their set.

If you liked the 2nd album or the 2nd half of their first album then you wouldn't be disappointed by their live show at Coachella as it's more in that vein. Most of the live reviews I've read of this tour talks about them playing well but mostly new stuff and the crowd being indifferent to it until they broke out the one fo the 3 big songs from the first album.

When I first saw them they couldn't hold their studio sound and tried to be jammy but weren't playing to the crowd. It came off as what I'd imagined a Happy Mondays' concert was like at around "Yes Please!", too many ppl on stage, seemed like in their own drug daze and couldn't recreate anything close to their studio sound.

The 2nd time they were still a little jammy but they've managed to play for the crowd and definitely were able to sound closer to the studio sound. Also their crowd interaction was a lot better, and didn't came across "I'm so f'd up right now" like the 1st performance.

They definitely do have a rep for bad shows (Definitely deserved for in the first half of their career) but I think they're getting better. The biggest thing I think was that they got on a major label and excelled without paying their dues on the road. So they were brought up to larger venues without being able to handle it. Now that they've toured a bunch they're getting a hang of it but aren't exactly Pink Floyd yet.

wrong...

they are solidifying a real fan base by staying true to themselves as artists. they are ditching the trend followers that liked their college party songs and aren't interested in going deeper with bands. smart move artistically, psychologically (for their own sanity), and also good business since they will have a dedicated cult following that loves them for who they are as artists.

plus the 2nd album is the shit and is way more accessible than its getting credit for in the hype machine.

Mos Def is strange nowadays. In his own world on stage. Wont do any Blackstar or Black on Both Side tracks. Thinks he is a musician now. His beats on his new stuff are lackluster. Never pay to see him again. Been burnt 3 times already just hoping he would get it together.

Pharcyde has no idea what tracks to perform. They do obscure stuff that 2 white guys in the crowd know. Pick the tracks witht he lamest beats. They suck live. Been burnt twice. Never again.

Jay Electronica needs to STOP Dropping the beat mid song for every song. That was so disappointing.

De La Soul, I don't care which sound fo teh audience is the loudest. Honestly. I'm completely unconcerned with whether the left, right, center, or back of the crowd can generate the msot noise. If you want to generate excitement, sing a rap song, like "me myself and i". I mean, you're de la fucking soul, it shouldn't be that hard.

lupe, dont show up for a show and perform for like 15 mintues, and even then, just do kick push 3 times straight. really not cool.

erykah, dont pick a venue that shuts at 11, forcing your opening act (the vastly superior roots crew) to start at 7, in los angeles. no one on earth can make a show in la at 7, because it's fucking la. we ahve this thing called traffic, and its unpleasent. then, you have a 90 minute break between sets, which forces you to cut your own set. thanks a lot, retard.

that is all for now, but honestly, im pretty done with shows based on the fact taht i enjoy them only about half the time. i only go when cool people are going to a great act in a great venue. and there are only a few of those a year.

Back in the 70's when bands performed over and over and over again, they got really good at performing.....

It just seems like people want to be famous and they want a hit song but they don't want to be GREAT at what they do and they think that just because of who they are, that we will like them......

I would chalk it up to lack of talent....

A lot of artist are good enough to get in studio and put out some really good music....but live they suck...

I don't understand how live shows can " go wrong" when there has been planning weeks if not months in advanced.......

The thing with live rap though, is that VERY FEW are actually good live.

And the most important thing....they are human and they are not consistent....

you can't go out and shat all over the stage one night and kill it the next and expect people to worship you...

To many people telling the Squalling duck that her voice his beautiful when she really sounds like a garbage disposal.....

At least the beatles had an excuse as to why their later shows sucked.....It was literally louder than a jet plane so they coulnd't even hear themselves playing...

In response to Reply # 54

I was at the same show you were at I think, Greek Theatre 2008?

At least you didn't try to pretend that the show wasn't actually sick when she was onstage.

That stage set, the band, her performance, the way the songs from the first New Amerykah came off onstage compared to how they sound on the album (which I hadn't even really liked all that much up to that point), etc.

All that shit was on point, she just fucked up the curfew bit-even was trying to keep playing and just take the fine until they shut the power from the stage off, which I'll admit I wasn't happy about but that 80 minutes or so was still great.

I don't know if I'd call The Roots Crew 'vastly superior' either. I've seen the Roots probably 40-50 times but if you really want to act like their opening set was touching what Badu did on that stage later, I don't know what to tell you.

I pretty much agree on De La, for a legendary group a fairly boring live act.

Lupe's just a cornball in general, I wouldn't pay to see him anywhere.

As for Badu, I'm giving her a mulligan for the short set two years ago & hitting the Greek show on the 20th (it's on a Sunday too, which eliminates the traffic issues mostly). Something tells me she won't be making the same mistake twice there.

Badu is the best female live act working today that I can think of off the top of my head, I'm not even sure who I'd put up against her.

i did like her performance when she was on stage. it was more the fact taht the roots were kind of treated as an opening act, as opposed to co-headliner.

i do think the rotos are on another level, but for subjective reasons.

thanks for the cosign on de la, i dont know what these folks are talking about. ive seen them a couple times, and the performances have always been ho hum. ive even been at shows that others called amazing, and been like wtf? they paced their shit slowly, had long ass gaps between shows.

also though, i didnt grow as a huge de la fan, i never really got the genius of their studio albums until this year or so, when i started realizing the value. maybe ill give them another chance this year.

I think that could have been made clearer, for sure. I wouldn't have a problem with them opening if it was billed clearly as Erykah's show but the early promotion first had it as The Roots' show with a quick mention of Erykah as special guest. It wasn't until I'd already gotten tickets & the date was approaching that it became apparent this was part of The Vortex Tour & primarily Badu's thing.

I've been a De La fan since 1989, catalogwise they're on the short list for groups but yeah, I've never been terribly impressed with them onstage though they have honed their skills a bit. But I was laughing when you spoke about that 'my side, your side, left side, right side' bullshit they do because it's true & they do entirely too much of that.

The problem is Maseo is their most charismatic performer & he's the DJ.

But the Common & Friends benefit show at the Palladium might have been the best I've seen De La because it was a rotating group of acts with no braks they only had about 25 minutes or so to rock, Dummy manned the decks while Maseo joined Pos/Dove up front, and then they had other MCs hop in with them (including Black Thought to freestyle over "Buddy", Comm for "Da Business", and even a DOOM appearance on "Rock.Kokaine.Flow.").

Back in the early part of the decade when they were the headliner on the Spitkicker Tour, they were getting outshown by most of the rest of the bill (Common definitely but even Kweli too).

it sounds like it could be a great lineup, but i hate those all day festival shows, and i have little to no desire to spend the day in san bernadino.

And I'd estimate having seen them six or seven times since the early nineties.

Although I'd give you Wu-Tang's ability to be a disaster, on a good night though they crush De La.

Truthfully Meth on his own has a better live show than De La Soul.

First time I saw him was during The Cool tour. He killt it. 200%. He had a live band, all of his supporting artists, great stage presence, breath control was on point, etc. He didn't repeat anything. One of the best shows I've seen.

Saw him again for his Steppin' Lasers tour. Not as good because he didn't have the band and all of his peeps like Nikki Jean, et al. but everything else was on point.

Had a really bad experience at a NERD show years ago. Got molested by this drunken broad twice my size (bearhugged my manhood from behind while screaming "I'ma fuck you WHITEBOY!"), had to wait nearly an hour an half between sets and waiting that long for the Black Eyed Peas isn't worth a thing, and then getting CRUSHED by the crowd when NERD finally comes on around 1am when the doors opened at 7pm. Had to give up on that stuff after that.

I was super disappointed in Busdriver the first time I saw him live. Dude looked all coked up and was just going nuts on the mic, destroying his own songs. Silver lining, though, got to chat with Daedelus instead.

this would have been around the time Both Sides Of The Brain dropped, 02 or so maybe?

He seemed to think that the fact that his mic was shaped like a phaser gun would be enough to entertain the crowd for a full set. It wasn't.

Good dude though, we smoked with him in that alley by Fluid prior to the show. Perhaps that was part of the problem but I highly doubt it, pun fully intended.

Only worse reputable MC live I saw at the TLA as well, Jeru. Just terrible & an asshole about it while doing it.

I saw him as part of Cali Comm 2003 in El Paso and Del came on stage with a recorder or some shit and sat indian style on the stage playing flute and half-assed freestyling most of his songs... I figured he was stupid high.

Talib kinda let me down when I saw him at NMSU, but the sound was booty meat and he's one of my favorites so I let it slide... Wasn't nearly as energetic as I thought he'd be though.

Rob Sonic's stage show is just turrible.

It was...bad.

He had Bukue One as an opener and a hypeman, and while he seems to be a good dude - his set wasn't going over well. Del comes out looking like ET, and was high as could possibly be. He didn't know (or didn't care to stay on track with) the lyrics to his own songs...I mean, Bukue had to keep him on point with At The Helm which is easily the crowd pleaser (or should be)...and it was just bad.

Thankfully I went to a party that night that saved that day for me.

#1. Ryan Leslie- Saw him in Annapolis at a small venue, Rams Head. He came out and did a weak set for maaaaybe 45 minutes and then bounced. No opening act and no encore. Left a really biter taste in my mouth. I thought he would come across much better live. "Wrong!!" -Charlie Murphy

#2. Mos Def- Attempt 1 was Feb 2009 at the 9:30 Club in DC. I was there for the first of two shows that night. Show was supposed to start ~6:30 because there was a second show at 9:30. He was delayed at the airport (or something) was the story that was barely relayed to the crowed. They had a whackass DJ spinning weak tunes for "entertainment". I think I left around 10:30. I just got tired of standing around waiting, not knowing when/if he was gonna show up.

#3. Mos Def- Attempt 2 was Sept 2009 at Sonar in B'more. Opening acts out the wazoo. Some hip-hop/rock band, a "come-up" MC, Jay Elec, and Talib Kweli. Loooong story short, show started at 7:30, Mos didn't finish his set till about 2:00 am. Now, I will say, Mos was great. Great energy and all that. The whole time he was on though, I kept thinking to myself 'I want to go home and go to sleep'. But I couldn't cause I waited that long and it was my 2nd attempt to see him.

#4. NERD- Saw them open for the Kanye Tour and then for Badu. Love the band, but damn they need a better sound tech. You can't understand a cotdamn word they are saying and the bass and drums are so heavy you can hardly hear any other instruments. If you aren't a fan in advance, I don't think seeing them live would turn you around.

#5. E.Badu- Saw her tour at DAR in DC back in 2008. So damn tight. Note perfect and I ended up bringing my 8 y/o daughter, because I didn't have a date (don't ask). I made it a daddy/daughter thing. The Roots killed to a mediocre crowd and it was a 9/10 night.

FastForward to May 2010 Pier Six in B'more. Opening acts: Janelle and NERD (see #4). Great right? It's a muggy night but it's cooling off. There's a longish intermission setting up for her set. The DJ was keeping it hype.

Finally the lights come down and everybody is ready. The band breaks into "20 Feet Tall" and then..... continues to play the same 16 bar intro for what seemed like 10 minutes. No bull.

She came out and did her thing and then at 11:00 rolled. She kept saying goodnight throughout her set like a joke though. I kept telling my girl 'wait for the encore' and then the lights came on. *cue sad trombone*

Mos Def was awful at RTB and wasn't that impressed when I saw him at Coachella w/ Black Jack Johnson but all the other times, he was absolutely ill.

I thought Del was dope the few times i've seen him. Heard that show he sat indian style was pretty cool - missed that tour.

My performers that were bad live or turned me:

T.I. --- not sure if it was the sound but I couldn't make anything that was going on. Not a big fan of his anyways, was just there to see Lupe.

Oasis --- used to like them until I saw them

Spoon -- caught them on this most recent tour and basically could have just listened to them at home on the cd player and it would have been the same thing.

Radiohead --- they were disappointing probably because their live performances were so hyped up for me.

Beastie Boys --- I just think they were too old when I caught them, wish I got to see them back in the day.

and other bells & whistles are cool but there's really not much in addition to that which stands out beyond their studio work.

When I saw them rated as the best live act going in any genre in either Spin or Rolling Stone about a year or two back, it was another example of the most unimaginative groupthink possible when it comes to rock critics.

just saw ms. lauryn hill at harmony festival in santa rosa, ca. although it was amazing to see her, i was left scratching my head. why was this her return show (frat rock / hippie fest in ca)? why did she speed all of her songs up to almost double time? why two bass guitars and synth bass plus a dj and two guitarists playing low power chords.

the band was insanely heavy and fast. nothing even close to hip hop, soul, r&b, whatever. straight up heavy power rock.

she was frustrated with the sucky band the whole time. she was taking shit to the sound guys and told the dj 'don't talk.'

the main stage at this festival sounded like one plastic sublime cover band after another, only worse (except fishbone and steel pulse). the sound mix was terrible, everyone was saying way too much bass and blaming 'techno' sound system engineers.

she did a few very good songs though (her zimbabwe cover was the ishest) and her voice seemed strong and controlled (when you could hear her over the prolonged thunder rumble of her band).

would have loved a mellow show with lots of lauryn and minimal backing, but i wasn't totally disappointed.
