"Used to be slammin hip hop tracks that are now irrelevant "

You know, all those songs that were made in the 90s that were just rappin over an old school track with a slightly changed up beat... as time passed and they were no longer new or fresh themselves most people would just rather hear the track it was based on and bypass the middle man. Like there's nothing they added that makes you have to every hear their version again.

Puff is gonna flat out own this post

you better throw Miami in there for good measure...although those tracks were pretty corny from the start. you would check yourself anytime you found yourself dancing or bobbing your head to 'em in public.

I still will listen to B.I.G.'s "Juicy", but "Hypnotize" is some PB&J (not as many memorable lines as the former).

I'm on the fence w/"I Love The Dough" too -- Angela Winbush is actually on the song, but I feel that beat/rhyme is in Jay's best style, the "bougie rap" he started rocking since '96. Ditto for Jay's "You're Only A Customer"...

Some of these loops tracks can stand up ... but not many. A lot has to do with the flow but it's interesting you picked two songs from biggie... one you can listen to the other you can't. I find a lot of Pac songs with loops I still dig... but then Pacs one of my all time favorite hip hop voices so it's always been more than the music with him.

"Future's" saving grace was the "Funky Worm" loop in the hook, likewise for "Chill" it's the scratching and "Jungle Boogie" referencing.

I think it's the part that was sampled ... that little spacey shit at the end of the Zapp record is always dope to me. The fact he built the song around it made it more appealing to my ears.

those tracks don't even have "retro" appeal like new jack swing does.

Even though DJ Scratch is killin the cuts on this, PMD's had much better performances on the mic than this. I'll take Vaughn Mason over this any day.

His work with W.C. and Maad Circle...Snoop even shouted him out before he was well known. "It Takes A Thief" really wasn't a bad album if I remember correctly...

Coolio's main years were 94-95, and Mack 10/WC's albums dropped in 95 when they first linked up...so at that time period, we were much more into their music

but I felt Coolio was "Puff-in" it before Puff really took off, basically jacking the entire song part and parcel and not even bothering to change the title in the case of the Lakeside and Kool & The Gang cases

I can't hear Stevie's original song now because of how much play "Gangsta's Paradise" got

I think only NY'ers still like that song.

I'd add "Throw ya Gunz" on there as well...although Onyx put out some solid albums after they were done with the screaming.

even beyond Hip-Hop, by the time popular music hits age 10, it sounds/feels dated. irrelevant. it remains so unless/until nostalgia sets in and makes the song relevant again. for us it's nostalgia, and for the youth it's 'freshness'. they hear things in the music we didn't/don't hear, maybe. it happens after the songs have laid dormant for a few yrs. this usually happens at about age 20. it's happening right now w/New Jack Swing, for example. a few yrs ago most of the gen pop didn't give a damn about NJS. at all. and now that late 80s/early 90s nostalgia is ramping up, NJS is the thing. it's on the come up.

so Puffy's 90s music will come back too. in about 5 yrs or so. give it time. all that mid to late 90s stuff will come back. well, not ALL of it, but some of it. the key songs and a few 'underappreciated' gems along w/them.

fuck you.

So once they both age people tend to listen to the better end product ... in most cases it's the original. I'm not going to fuck with Men in Black when I have Forget Me Nots as an option.

i thought that's what all hip hop songs were. Rapping over old tracks with changed up beats. Hence the word sampling, and yes i am being a smart ass. Lets not try to make hip hop somthing it ain't.
