"The Wack Eyed Peas"
Wed Jun-10-09 12:01 PM by AquamansScience

Okay... so this week maybe hell week for all the wack ass niggaz out there... next week I promise will be a love fest of gothic proportions to even things out...

but seriously..

the corn factor in this group is legendary...
it's like what if the rainbow coalition and a stylist from hell merged...

but beyond the corniness that is everything about them...

why on earth is there music still here?
I remember when them clowns first came out and I thought...
give it time.. they'll get dropped.. if there is a God...
and then it kept coming..
at coming..

don't funk with my heart?

ppl... how can we allow clowns to claim hiphop when they show no loyalty to it other than pandering for the camera and claiming it's a freestyle.. he's horrible btw... stick to the Sammy Davis routine.

What has happened?
What has happened to the black community in not calling the shots on what music will be in the black community. Mind you I have never been to a black club and the black eyed peas has come on and ppl just started wilding out (if you have, please share that story as that would be a pretty meaty read.. if not unbelievable)...

but why are these clowns constantly given a pass?

seriously...

can you name one album they have you respect from cover to cover?
can you name one song that you respect long enough to listen to while your ears bleed and you lose consciousness?
seriously?
Oh and spare me on the Aqua's a hater.. when Quest went in on Soulja Boy ya'll said nothing... and he's gone in on alot of people.
that being said...
The Wack Eyed Peas... WHAT... THE.. FUCK.

even the name is offensive...

I remember when this cat was on cruthces.. and he tells TMZ..
"I wanted inspiration... so I was on the underpass on the freeway.. where I went to climb so I could start tagging... and then I slipped and fell"

sure you were potnah.
sure you were. I was right there with you too..
me you, pookie, Zaphyr, Take51, Pink, Lee, KaySlay all of us... taggin.

*dead silence*

*starts throwing shit around the room like Prince in the basement on PR*

FOUL!!! FOUL on all counts!!!

...listen to something grittier. But then again, the Black Eyed Peas were never gritty.

But you know, regardless of the music, they've had an extended life due to whatever they're doing. I just want to be alive with will.i.am writes (or hell, I'll ghostwrite it) his autobigraphy telling people "it got to a point where we could write anything and it didn't matter, our people could put it into a hit and we would have followers. This the kind of music I wouldn't even put faith in growing up, but I knew how much I am a sucker for a good pop song, a fantastic hook. We were throwing out jokes and people deemed them as classics."

At times I find it hard to believe anyone would wake up in the morning knowing that bullshit is being pushed to anyone as serious music, and yet there will be countless people below my reply saying "it's fun music, it's not meant to be serious." I would love to make bullshit music and make bullshit money. Put me on that bandwagon.

But the reason I pickep the album up was because of "Fallin Up" It's still my favorite BEP track.

You're such pests...now, what is it you want? In your depths of your ignorance, what is it you want? Well, whatever it is you want, I can't deliver because I just don't see it. - Orson Welles

from a careerist perspective, they were better off getting the meth-head from Kids Incorporated and going all the way with the pop bullshit like they did.

Because they don't have the hip-hop chops to cut it with that audience. Even their efforts to make 'real' hip-hop records, like the Primo-produced 'BEP Empire' fall flat. Because that kind of style really isn't in them. It smacks of trying too hard and leaves no one really entertained.

At least the shit they do now appeals to the 'Now Thats What I Call Music!' set, because they were never gonna get any love from heads (although heads will be quick to act mad about them selling out when the reality is they never showed love in the first place).

1) their major debut came out when organix came out so in the eyes of the world "they came out BEFORE us.

2) the ONLY time they tried to play favorites against the two was sasha jenkins' cover story of the Fugees in which he said "we seemed to have left our show in philly" on the opening night of the tour.

me and jenkins JUST started talking (mind you he wanted assurance that there was going to be no "bum rushing" or foulplay retaliation on our behalf.---i laughed like "come on dog....im near 40 and im on my 11th album AND IM STILL HERE MAKING MUSIC.

10 million sales or not that is a win.

if EITHER of those mags of note woulda ever printed ANYTHING to that tone of "move over roots"

then you mos def would not be on okayplayer because "roots drummer ahmir thompson would be on his 13th year of a 48 year sentence for fire bombing the offices of said publication.

it was in the source in the year end issue when they preview the up and coming acts... they definitely mentioned The Roots when previewing BEP as a new act not in an insulting move over way, but in a, another hip-hop act performing with a live band is making moves kinda way so move over and make room kinda way, haha, which can be insulting too I guess

I 100% remember because just that sentence made me at least wanna see what they were about

it twas 96 my fair men...

a young band of gypsys named the Roots of Philadelphia were headed to our beloved land of Mary. Oh yeah, along also was them goddamn Fugees, THE MOST OVERRATTED BAND EVER IN BLACK MUSIC... SERIOUSLY.

the Roots came out and my life changed...
I'll never forget the zone thought and the band was in that night...
(thought and I were later introduced along with Lauryn, Wyclef, and Kujo). The ticket twass..

Good Mob
The Roots
and then the headliners the Fugees..

sun... Wyclef is a horrible ass guitarist... striaght up.. theee worst... and for them to come on after ya'll (plug)... was nothing short of blasphemous... ya'll destroyed them cats to the point where clef was playing "Walk This Way" just the riff over the record...
and dudes were acting like he was doing something...

the energy level dropped so damn quickly...
was horrible.

could never cosign for them again...

oh and my boy got thrown out by the state police..
all in all, hot show.

I heard Fallin Up.. checked it out. Heard the album. It was okay. But that was like 2000. Once they started going commercial after the first album is when I stopped checking for them.

I know it ain't popular, but I also liked "Weekend" and "Request Line," as well as "Cali to NY" with De La Soul.

Everything after those albums was hot garbage.

even be saying this much..

when they came out... backpacker hiphop was not being reflected at all.. cats like Big and Pac had clowned niggaz...
and basically you couldn't do anything with a backpack on...
and since cats who loved that element... were still alive and well and was still a fanbase... along came a new, well promoted, psuedo version of that, that without any additional music to weigh against was partially believable... I maintain if you go back to this album now... you may have a change of heart...

Bottom line their music initially lent itself more to what the native tongues were about. Not that is was conscious (like Tribe/DeLa), but they were having fun and somewhat backpacker without completely begging for a radio hit ie.; joints & jams, request line.

They add Fergie to the group and the music becomes completely radio bubble gum and corny. I'm not even against good pop music, but its like day and night when you compare the earlier music to now.

Commercial sales don't mean shit to me if the music sucks.

No one is arguing for their current output. It's just that most people don't agree with the total dismissal of their catalog.

Yeah, they are a pop group NOW.
Yeah, their NEW songs suck.

Okay, that's a given. But it's not cool to just throw them away when their entire sound has been overhauled from what they started out with.

I'm not a fan of Mos Def's recent output, but I'm not going to claim all his albums are garbage.

...is anyone familiar with the song 'Le Rox'?

B-side for 'Fallin Up'.

I thought it was a great track. Really in the mode of what Dilla was doing around Labcabincalifornia/Beats, Rhymes and Life (but not affiliated with Dilla at all, just similar).

No, I don't have it anymore.

Fam, i loved "Behind the Front" and the first half of "Bridging the Gaps", than Elephant dropped... that was the third lp right? On one hand i knew it was coming because of the second half of "BtG" and on the other was like who is this squirrel lookin' white broad and why are they pandering to middle america... their former singer Kim Hill even put them on blast in a past issue of Fader claiming after "BtG" the label said if you make album three aiming to please the De La, J5 crowd, their will be no album four, Kim claims she walked into a session a few days after that meeting, heard the new music wil.i.am was making, and said piece!

their cheese-cornball-just awful music, style, approach is just hard on the ears and eyes, but they baffle me no more than the appeal of 50, Raws, Gucci Mane, Souljah Boy, Gym Class Heroes, Fallout Boy Jessica and Ahsley Simpson ect... at least with people like Miley Cyrus you know they are making shit for kids, but really what are the Peas doin and representing? its embaressing... i know Wil, Ap and Tab have had that Tommy Davis moment in front of the mirror in Bamboozled, they just aint strong enough to say fuck this, which they should have said after Elephant.

and then it went downhill..

yeah the first chick had a nice voice... but I didn't even like that shit.. there was one single from the first album I fucked with..
it was the clear El Segundo bite.. but it was peace and I let it slide cause mad niggaz was doing that...

I mean i enjoyed both their first two albums and lost it with Elephunk (think thats right) But fuck Will been rolling in the circle for a while. He played keys on Umi Says and the band had LIVE shows from what i have heard from my brother for 4-5 years and two decent albums, can't discredit that. I mean they went cornball but Fergie got a hell of a habit to support so they sold out.

88keys produced that joint..
I'm inclined not to believe that..
however the keys were not mindlblowing just basic fender rhodes textured chord progressions.. dope song...
what did impress me is he wrote that song for John Legend...
doesn't help I don't like his corny ass.. but that being said..
it was a beautiful song...

the John Legend joint and this.. however to be fair..

it's a Fender Rhodes, the most perfect piano ever..
you could play the McDonald's Theme song on that joint and sound like Stevie Wonder...

buh buh buh
bah bah

like for real.. but.. he was apart of a classic so we'll give him that....

is I now firmly realize they suffer from Loyalty to Power..

not to good music...

cause from what I'm hearing is...
the positives:
first album was doable (despite a critical ear would have called that what it really was... biting the Native Tongue Movement to immediately gain respect they wouldn't have gotten otherwise - but to be fair... many ppl did... roots, pharcyde... initially to get the ball rolling... hey tribe was the shit)

he wrote a John Legend song
showed some range on the Freedom joint
and he played keys on Umi says...
ok.. Oh and he 'went in' on a freestyle...

somewhere in the middle is Lost Change... we haven't firmly thumbed that one out...

the negative?
Ten years of bullshit junkfood garbage nonsense...
from an otherwise talented man...

so we'll just overlook all the countless horrible song titles...
the horrible videos... the ridiculously poor albums..
all cause the first album was okay?
nah dont' buy it... I think most cats are riding thier tails cause of the success they had... they have tasted the Kool Aid.
that's what I get cause there really is no concerete shut em down argument in favor of why ppl dig em..
to each thier own...
of course... and that's the beauty of music... options..
but still ... get the fuck outta here...

Freedom Girl posted it over in Activist

i mean the contrast

Dave - pure originality, #1 most sold DVD in history, pressured to conform into cookie-cutter-ville

Oprah - richer than richie rich, sugar-coating falsehoods for the masses while pushing agendas all the while in all of her dealings

Spike told us
Dave told us
Dolphin is telling us (www.wardolphin.blogspot.com to get up on that)
so many have told us

they got hiphop
we need to get up on something else

second choice? Spike Lee... which reiterates basically the same thing...

all you'll ever have to do is have a sit down with Melvin Van Peebles or catch him speak... he will break that shit down.

People in here taking their shit way too seriously. They know it is party music that is manufactured around the concept of the hook. Their fans...well their fans might not know but whatever. People who know music know this. Everyone knows this. Yet you still see people saying "HOW COME WE GIVING BEP A PASS"...No music fan takes their music as anything more than party music at best...and manufactured pop on average.

Right, I like their dance tracks. They get a lot of play in the gym

But, as far as hip hop, I don't consider them hip hop at all. They are pop stars. Plain and simple. They haven't been Hip Hop since their first two albums.

As far as Fergie goes, I like her. I guess because I grew up in the Kids Inc. generation

In response to Reply # 36

He did a few instrumentals for that, kind of getting into the incidental stuff that The RZA has become known for, and I felt that stuff was pretty good. It was devoid of anything pop, it's not like LOST CHANGE but instead was a bit more serious in nature. Then again, I think if I had his status, I would be doing all kinds of music too. I definitely don't hate will.i.am, but sometimes his music is just pure ass. FREEDOM WRITERS soundtrack, I wish he would do more of that.

73. "Maybe it's integrity and respect vs. "go for yours""
In response to Reply # 57

One common cause, but two different missions. I think there's a way to play with the system, and in terms of integrity and respect, Dilla and Madlib will always have that kind of respect. Look at Premier. He did tracks for Aguilera but that only helped boost Aguilera a bit because she wanted to work with him. Badu worked with Madlib, I'm sure there's mutual admiration. That's not to say that will.i.am doesn't have any admiration, but you're going to see him working with pop stars and arguably not anyone with integrity and respect.

In the back of his mind, he may be saying "I don't give a fuck what anyone is saying, because at the end of the day, I'm paying my bills, the naysayers aren't." Or he knows his position and will work it at any angle while he can, because he's only a fall away from working at country fairs.

It reminds me of that Lenny Kravitz video "Where Are We Running" where the look on Kravitz's face is of disgust because he knows exactly what he's doing. I'd like to think this is what will.i.am goes through:
http://splicd.com/kV43__y32f4/237/276

Then again, he may be feeling like this:

whenever a POP/candy/poptart artist...

talks about the underground CONSTANTLY in thier interviews..

always putting up a challenge "if you can't freestyle, then you aint hiphop"

always claiming they are that real shit..

the nigga actually said "the streets was calling for it"

yet when I call him out, which is HIPHOP to the Nth degree..
I'm being told fall back...

no.

what they should be saying "yes we are bubble gum... no of course we look up the Jonas brothers cause of their production.. .absolutely.. Disney first.. see my tatts?"

seriously.
Don't claim that which is not yours and then get mad when it jumps up to bite. If they were admitting they were what they are... I wouldn't pay em no mind.. notice em.. and let them be on thier way...

for example... i don't post about Jessica Simpson.. why? cause beyond that fact I tap that ass to texas and back...
it's not worth anything. We know she sucks... she knows she sucks.

but when ppl from other countries (who normally know better) don't.. cause this cat is freestyling on MTV2 but then turns around and releases some Wrigley's bullshit.. yeah I may weigh in.

THE PROBLEM ISN'T THAT THEY ARE DOPE...
THE PROBLEM IS THEY ABSOLUTELY HAVE NO SHAME...

In response to Reply # 0

I liked the Black Eyed Peas and their first two albums. I became disappointed, though I understood why they what they did, how they had to change the sound they had on the first two albums in order to sell and go to a wider audience. Now, they make catchy pop music that sells and folks love them. When I heard Elephunk, I think "My Humps" was the song that did it, I just stopped buying their shit .

The only thing now that still irks me a bit is the way they handled their working relationship with Kim Hill. I do feel Kim Hill may have been blackballed in the industry with how things went down with her and BEP. However, I don't know all the facts and BEP side of things and only know what Kim has said in various interviews.

OK, the music isn't very good. But at least I would get to travel, make money and get groupies! I don't like my current job because the pay is low and it is boring. Is your life better than any member of BEP at this point? Probably not. That is why you are complaining about them.

You don't have to like their music. They probably don't like their music. But the songs they make really touch people in America, and even more importantly, overseas. BEP has a large international fan base. They may not get much respect in the States, but they are legendary overseas.

Your life is lame like mine. That is why I can understand your frustration with BEp and "wack" music. But you must realize fans do not care about being cool all of the time. Most BEP fans are probably losers like me. But they like BEP because they have a nice party vibe and seem like fun people. Hanging with fun people or getting to know about fun people makes life a little more tolerable. I can guarantee you that many more people would be committing suicide if it weren't for a group like BEP to get them through the day.

Yes, life is that sad for many of us

Back in the day when "Elephunk" was released it was supported on this site, like many other artists were/are.

Anyway, will.i.am made a few posts, in response to what people were saying about the album, and he basically admitted that they -------

sold out because times in the music industry were tough and his group needed to do what they needed to do to sell records. (paraphrasing)

Now I'm not condoning this behavior, but I just think it's funny that he actually admitted this, more or less, on this very site.

It's not a new revelation that they sold out, but I guess it's fine to be upset that they're popular and basically using hip-hop like she's a cheap whore.

the BEP's to me, in my opinion as I only speak for me...
are pop...

Soulja Boy... even tho I'm not really sure where to place him... but I can see pop.. cause cats who are really into that southern hiphop recognizes he took advantage of the vehicle... but don't recognize him... it's really for tweens in the suburbs who don't know better although the single, as horrible as it was, was nothing short of an anamoly...

that's no different than BEP taking advantage of the hiphop vehicle...

nah I pointed out.. hell YOU pointed out you didn't want to play for him... fair enough, I think everyone knew why...

but surely if you pointed that out we can reference it.. fair?

however...
my theory is that I would have played for him before BEP's cause at least he's a made man...
hate his music, and I will, but the truth is he's a young dude, who figured out a market record execs couldn't..

he's a young dude who handled the GZA ridicule... better than GZA and actually made him look stupid...

I guess what really gets me is that apparantly from what I'm hearing Will actually has talent... so why the fuck isn't he using it?

Soulja Boy tell em...
is it silly?
absolutely
is it ridiculous?
offensive?
set niggas back 15 years?
sure..

but the Black Eyed Peas are 4 coons, not one...
more coonage for your buck...

and they BOTH claim hiphop but I would assume Soulja Boy would STILL get more respect...

I'm a pretty big fan of will.i.am. He's one of the few producers that has been able to give Nas a hot beat in the last few years. Songs About Girls was one of the best pop albums of 2007. His BEP output is trash, but I think if he wanted to he could be one of hip-hop's best producers, kind of like how Mos Def could be one of the best rappers if he made an effort.

When this bunch first came out I really wanted to like them. I thought that I'd like them a lot. However as it turned out I liked a couple of their songs but don't find the likeable ones classic at all. I guess because the rap marked has been saturated with poor quality songs for so long now that when a group or artist is promoted in a left off center, or back-packerish way I fall for the hype and convince my self that i will really like their music even before I hear it. Or I hear one song that I like from that type of group and assume that I will love their album. However once I have their album I discover that I'm not really feeling it and do not feel compelled to listen to it again.

I did this exact thing with Lupe. I like him on 'Touch the Sky'. Liked kick push. Listened to the album 3 times or so and then abandoned it. No track make s me want to go back and re-listen to his music. This goes for BEP too. They are just such a strange group. It almost seems like they were manufactured from the very start of their careers even pre-fergie. They are not my cup of tea I stay well clear of them and the fergie trick really is an awful specimen who looks too old and just looks so wrong. BEP don't come across like a group to me at all. They just seem like a random bunch of people I don't detect a vibe between them at all.

manufactured, marketed to the dumb and lazy..

what's interesting is that this morning I saw a Target commercial featuring them.. .which basically sums it all up.

I thought about this..
and then came to a quick conclusion.
For people to say that Will came on OKP and explained that the label pressured them into Elephunk.. (another horrible title) is some bs.

You see that happens if the album did nothing, and if they are still under contract... sorta like the label saying 'you don't know what your doing now follow are general formula'. However in this case..
the first album did well and so did the second...
mind you Fergie alone was a massive change, putting a pouting white girl who was 'cool' to seal the deal for the multi-colored group.
Interestingly enough.. when you have this sort of track record you actually have more power than before and can then tell the label wassup. For example... let's say that bs story is true..
the label (the invisible people at the label per Will's story) pressured them into Elephunk. Well guess what... it did very well.
So when the next round came around he had the opportunity to say, 'nah.. I got this' but instead continued in the same horrible direction. I have never been a Black Eyed Peas fan cause they are NOT real Mc's by anyone's stretch. They are an approved version of Hammer... and the only thing missing is an entourage that takes all your money.
