For the young age that he was, Mike was showing his incredible range as a singer back then.

Schmaltzy Pop songs
Torch Songs
Covers
Soulful ballads
Uptempo grooves

He did them all in his adolescent years. That's one of the things made his talent so scary, man.

I've been listening to:

Euphoria
Happy
Up Again
Dear Michael
One Day In Your Life (It sums up his career IMO)
Ain't No Sunshine (I STILL think his version reigns over everyone who recorded it.)
We've Got Forever
Love Is The Thing You Need
Breezy
I Am Love
She's A Rhythm Child

Mirrors Of My Mind (I talk abt this more in the Jackson Family post)is an absolute banger of a song. If no one is dancing to this by the middle of that sinister breakdown, they're absolutely soulless(one of the main lyrics is in my sig).

No one ever makes mention of this either, but Thom Bell & Linda Creed wrote new lyrics for 'People Make The World Go 'Round' especially for Mike for the 'Ben' album. When they got word that Berry wanted to record it, they went to work.

"I keep pretending/with memories never ending." Michael Jackson

R.I.P.

in elementary school our music teacher ms. brown made us sing that song (AND heal the world lol she loved her some michael lol)
i always liked that song
but listening to it yesterday and today i actually shed a tear or two
particularly the part that i have quoted in my sig.
i used to love singing that part but never really took note to the lyrics
before i just saw the song as a song for free willy
now i really see he was speaking/singing directly to his fans with that one
the prayer at the end and everything.

i had talked to my mother earlier about how when i was little i thought MJ was supernatural. it was all the glittery imagery and the way his music sounded*...all of it came together and had me convinced MJ was not 1 of us. of course, i didn't have this all sorted out in my mind back then, but in hindsight i see that's what i was on.

anyway, when i heard that line i remembered thinking he was supernatural. his death showed me w/crushing finality that he was 'only' human.

*...the 'Can You Feel It' video set it all up for me. i saw this when i was 5 or 6 and very impressionable: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xW1fXL3s7bk

death is crushing us like this
i've never been so upset at a celebrity death
to the point of for real for real mourning
i didn't necessarily feel he was immortal
i mean i remember laughing with my older sister when we would watch
videos of his concerts and people would be falling out
but i can't say that if i were in the presence of michael that i
wouldn't have fallen out the same way
he was the absolute greatest to me
even in recent years i calmed down my fandom considerably
but i still defended him
still anticipated his music even if i knew
it wasn't going to be as good as his old shit
i bought invincible for crying out loud lol
he was just an accepted part of life
there's mcdonald's, disney world and michael jackson
these were the unshakeable truths of life
micky d's and disney world is still standing but mike is gone
i'm rambling now lol

but i definitely feel you.

another song i already liked (i was a mike fanatic for a long time
particularly of young mike once i was able to get my hands on his early shit)

but listening to it yesterday
the lyrics really echoed in my head
i posted it with my views on mike
http://tambourdafrique.blogspot.com

its like he's talking about a relationship or whatever
but now that he's dead the lyrics take on new meaning for me

'...you'll remember me somehow. though you don't need me now. i will stay in your heart. and when things fall apart, you'll remember someday...'

I turned to MTV and it was on, it's basically just a collage of a bunch of snippets from alot of his videos over the years.

I didn't really expect to be moved as much I ended up being while watching his life flash by in different videos.

I mean all I kept hearing was the chorus and it made me incredibly sad for some reason.

RIP Mike.

He was in the process of shooting it when he was arrested for the sexual molestation charges in 2005.

There are some leaked pictures floating around the Internet.

That song is beautiful, however, and I remember that everyone in my family loved it. "Invincible" is quite underrated.

I revisted Off The Wall and Invincible a week or two ago.

Before Michael's passing that is.

Neither stayed in rotation.

I love Off The Wall.

But I didn't even buy Invincible until recently.

I was never a fan of that album.

Though I will say that I like some of the ballads on there.

Anyway, other than watching/listening to Maseo (of De La Soul) play a variety of Michael Jackson songs (as well as some other stuff) the other night, I haven't been listening to Michael at all.

And that isn't out of disrespect by anymeans.

It's just not how I work though.

I am grabbing up on some of these tribute mixes though.

I know sooner or later I'll want to give them a listen.

matter of fact,
the whole Blood On The Dancefloor EP (I'm not counting the remixes they put on the cd)...
is an underrated piece of work in Mike's catalogue and is often being overlooked when discussing his music.

I think it was simultaneously released (or just a bit after) the short movie 'Ghosts'.

Other than 'Morphine',

'Ghosts', 'Is It Scary' (one of my favorites also), 'Superfly Sister' & 'Blood On The Dancefloor' were on it.

He also sounde 'angrier' than on most of his other records.

>songs you knew but had sorta ignored previously?

I've been all up on the album cuts from Dangerous since Thursday. Who is it..I can't let her get away..jams I really loved when the album dropped. I had basically retired that album for a decade. I'm messing with Invincible a little bit too. I always keep Butterflies on low rotation until that once a year 'rediscovery' repeatathon jam session, but You Rock My World and few other cuts are in the mix too as I'm revisiting Mike as a whole the last couple of days.

I listen to the ablum cuts from Thriller and Off the Wall as a whole on a regular.

I listen to I Can't Help it several times a month every month, because its on a mix that I revisit regularly (its called 'That Girl' and its a mix about..you guessed it..having a 'crush' on girl, getting at her, and all the stuff that happens BEFORE things go bad in any way, shape or form. The desire, the pursuit, the newness, the good stuff..yeah.)

The J5 stuff..early and later..gets decent rotation all the time so nothing obvious is left hanging there.

Besides all the infamous footage I always see of people falling out, crying and fainting, and a few award show performances. I never really paid much attention to his live show footage, it was all about the music videos with M.J..

But now I'm just seeing all this footage from the Triumph & Victory Tours, And his pentacle, The Bad Tour, and Im thoroughly enjoying it. Watching and studying how much of a master of performance he was..

Even digging the 2001 Madison Square Garden performance, since if Im not mistaken, is his last time performing on stage...

somebody posted an article in gd where they were saying people were saying Bad was like watered down. that album is HARD i don't know what they were talking about. dirty diana, bad, speed demon, liberian girl (that beat is hard no matter how smooth the song is), another part of me. i don't know i was born in '82 to so i'm probably really biased towards the bad album but that shit is hard. dirty diana is a lot iller than i thought.

It was one of the first songs I heard on the radio when I got into the car on my way home on from work, and I thought it was so strange that it was being played. About 15 minutes later, I found out Michael had died.

I've been listening to it all weekend since then (especially the live recordings, which sound even better than the Album Version) and it is quickly growing into one of my favorite Michael songs.

long time lurker...short time okayplayer.

The Doc's favorite song on that... was "Leave Me Alone". It was The Doc's theme song when it came out.

But that album was kind of like...where he felt things had changed. Now?

Those songs sound way different.

The Doc thinks it's because when that album originally came out, he was in an unhappy place in life. Now, when he hears that album, the more fond memories of that place come out.

Also... did anyone else notice that Mike's singing closer to his "real" voice for most of that album?

(my dad's radio show lol)

and leave me alone is one
i really underestimated michaels lyrics
i see now that he was both a genius of melody
and lyrics. he had people help him with lyrics
but he made sure they were meaningful.

..."We're Almost There", which I used to hate as a kid, but loved when I got grown 'cause I finally understood it. That was the point when listening to it started to make me cry 'cause it's just so sweet and hopeful and pleading that it kills me every time. I won't even put myself through that now or "Music and Me". I'd be asking for trouble.

But, I just heard "Maria" and "We've Got a Good Thing Going" for the first time ever and felt like I was listening to a person whose musical oeuvre I thought I knew, but really didn't. And while that's exciting, it's incredibly sad that it took this man dying for me to really dig into who he was musically beyond the string of hits we all know about.

The Jacksons self titled album was great, actually, especially 'Blues away'

I discovered that remix at the beginning of June and have been bumping it ever since. I always thought Remember the Time was one of the all time under-appreciated mj songs (well, under-appreciated compared to the stuff on OTW and Thriller) and that remix just makes it jump out of the speakers

also, these two remixes of Rock With You, by Frankie Knuckles and Masters at Work

does anybody know of anymore cool MJ remixes, official or bootleg?
I have the Tangoterje edit of I can't help it and I LOVE it.

and, like everybody else, MJ's death has hit me a lot harder than I thought it would. It makes sense tho, I mean, the man's music has been a part of my life since birth (i'm 27) so it feels like I lost fam. RIP MJ, you will live forever thru your incredible music.

He took 'Ain't No Sunshine' to a place that Bill couldn't.

'People Make The World Go' Round'- Bell & Creed wrote new lyrics especially for him.

'I Don't Know Why I Love You'- Steve's version has emotion, but Mike's vocals had that AND passion.

'With A Child's Heart'- Come on!

'La La La Means I Love You' and 'Ready Or Not(Here I Come)' are just superior to the Delfonics versions. Ask William Hart.

'All The Things You Are' is dope, although I've never heard the original.

Only one I can really see you saying is kinda wack is 'Doctor My Eyes'.

Now if the situation was reversed and Mike had the backing track from the Abbey Road session, then yeah....he'd have smoked it.

as I listen to it now and I never really cared that much for it.

Amazing his tonality and vocal phrasing considering his age at the time.

In response to Reply # 0

After listening to a lot of his stuff this weekend, I realized that his looks and the tabloid stuff really affected my enjoyment of his music post Thriller. I liked a lot of his songs post Thriller, but I really didn't appreciate them until now.

Except for 'Stranger in Moscow' which is definitely my favorite post 'Bad' song by him.

Did anyone actually remember that 'Childhood' song of that movie soundtrack with the video of the kids floating around in the boats. I never heard that song or seen that video before.

mikes albums and singles are flying up the charts right now which is good...but this is only b/c so many people had shelved mike, hadn't heard or seen any of his songs or watches his performances - even thought they've been on youtube for years.

now all of a sudden he is dead people are scrambling...I never stopped listening to mike. white mike, black mike, young mike, whatever - I genuinely liked all of it and still do, and always will.

Just really started paying mind to
Another Part of Me
Leave Me Alone
Lady In My Life (strikes a cord with me where Im at in life, though im still young).

And I'd never heard This Place Hotel until i turned it on MTV Jams this weekend...Great track though its a little strange with some of the supernatural elements in it, and mike always struck me as superhuman

I definitely gotta pick up the box sets with my next paycheck, no doubt Mike's records on Motown were way before me, and largely unfamiliar...

wtf wow. i've heard this shit before but i never played it over and over like i'm doing right now. i'm showing my age but off the wall i definitely wasn't familiar with until i was older.
thriller and bad dominated my life in the 80s. i was born the year thriller came out. so off the wall was like an after thought.
i dont' even recall my parents playing that record. i did hear
some songs from that album off the 'making of thriller' vhs

"Time Waits For No One" from Triumph album from The Jacksons (who apparently released SIX albums under that name! Not Jackson 5 with Motown, but "The Jacksons"!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXD2maC02TA&feature=player_embedded

Also i saw The Wiz when i was young, but i DO NOT remember the following. DAMN i sure love the way MJ was singing here!!:
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4th7d_you-cant-win-michael-jackson-the-wi_music
YOU BETTA SANG!!!

Also, i have heard "Smile" before, but i had absolutely no idea there was a video to it. This mess will break your heart from the beginning, esp towards the end: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HsJ7CgmIVM

Damn MJ.

I was familiar with 80s pop MJ starting with Off The Wall, and familiar with young kid MJ (first few jackson 5 albums, his first solo with "i wanna be where you are)

But I never listened to Triumph or Destiny, at all..it's great..it's like Off The Wall MJ with a full band sounding kinda EW&F-ish..

It could be just because it's the newest to me, but I think it's my favorite era for his music

I think it was Mick Jagger off of the "Victory" album...

I hadn't heard it since I was a little kid. They played it on the radio this weekend and I almost lost my mind...

Personally I like guitar part in the song more than MJ's and Mick Jagger's singing but I can see why it was a hit back in '84.

Mind if I ask where you live...'cause the chances of me hearing that (even now) in Syracuse, NY is zilch, and I would react the same way you did.

I was listening to the radio and heard, i can't help it if i wanted too i can't help it. I was like Mary remade that tune with Faith and i did not know the original was an MJ song. I was thinking it is time for me to get a copy of Off the Wall.

a few minor production changes and it could have easily been an excellent tenth cut. as it is, that and 'will you be there' are very undeserving footnotes in mikes catalog.

Will You Be There *might* just be my favorite MJ song.
Shit gets me pumped for some reason...

HIStory Continues also contains a bunch of modern (-er) MJ jams that are really great.
I mean, how do you go wrong with him rockin tracks with Janet, Slash, Boyz II Men, Biggie, and Shaq Diesel?

I unfortuntely took him for granted, got into other artists and other music. And besides Butterflies & Whatever Happens, I never got into Invincible, and that album is really good. These last 3 weeks have been eye-opening to say the least. Man he was a beast...it's like you always knew that, but his passing has made it undeniably clear again. He was the greatest.

Big Boy- no rediscovered- just discovered

I Want You Back- listening to it now with grown up ears and a little bit of living behind me...

A Fool For You- he really was an old man trapped in a 10 year old body...

Shake Your Body Down to The Ground- never paid as much attention...

I can't bring myself to listen to grown up Michael too much just yet...though...he's always been in rotation...always...

i call myself an MJ fan and i SLEPPTTTTTTTTTTT on Heaven Can Wait! Omg, even tho i usually don't dig commercialish-R&B type joints, this sh!t baaaangs. And it's not like his voice sounds outdated or anything....it works.

Even tho i know Off The Wall is my favorite MJ album, from what i've heard of Invincible tracks, and i'd prolly say it's my 2nd favorite. Ppl have been SLEEPIN on this album. Butterflies, Heaven Can Wait, Rock My World, Break of Dawn....don't understand why ppl hate on it (like on TV specials and ish. Dumbasses don't even know why they themselves thought it was garbage.)

Other than the fact that the BAD video starred Wesley Snipes opposite Mike, and was directed by Scorcese, I heard that song and wondered how the hell it was so popular. Video made the song, i guess.

I'm diggin on the Dangerous album now more than ever (always loved Thriller and Off the Wall, Bad etc.) But I never realized how perfect of a song Man in the Mirror was. And I always thought (still do) that Dirty Diana is his most underrated song. still dope.

His new live show woulda been sumthin to see tho. All these unreleased trax make me think he mighta had a surprise LP up his sleeve to top off his comeback, u know Mike was tricky like that.

speaking of yet to be released albums, have yall heard any of the leaked tracks from the new crew out here in Cali called REVOLUTION OF THE MIND. My homey played me some cuts from their new album (called Honor in Sin, I think) exec. prod. by SABAC RED from NON PHIXION. I almost went back to his crib the next day to here the songs again. straight fiyyaaa!!

I find myself listening to most of the Jackson 5 joints more so than his solo stuff that I'm more familiar with. I love Off the Wall and Thriller don't get me wrong but I'm really jamming "I Wanna Be Where You Are", "Got to be There", "All I do is think of you", "Maybe Tomorrow", "Dear Darling" and all that old school vintage MJ and the Jack 5. Just makes you really realize how long Mike been putting in work. Also I thought that "Cry" joint Marsha was penning with Mike was crazy. I want to hear Mike sing it a little or I hope Marsha finishes it and puts it out. - Kani Ayubu, The Black Art Depot

I've really been stuck on the Off The Wall LP.

The title track "Off The Wall" is truly the one song that just picks up my mood no matter how down I am. I forgot how much I love that song along with "working day & night"

Can't wait to cop The Jackson 5 box set.
