"Beefs that you didn't understand 100%"

What beefs have happened in Rap that you may have heard the disses for, but never really understood what the true cause was? What side stories have you heard about that may or may not be true, regarding the people involved?

My boy in Florida was talking about the Gucci Mane and Jeezy beef, and I never really paid attention to it, and still won't...but the fact that somebody from Jeezy's camp got killed means it is more serious than "I can out rap you." With Game and 50, I know more about that beef than anything else, but most people just know what was said on TV and the diss songs.

it was mostly just that lupe didn't ever listen to ATCQ so he fucked up some lyrics in a tribute performance to ATCQ... i don't think/know if any sort of conflict materialized though.

lupe was on hiphop honors performing some part of a tribe song (phife's verse on electric relaxation, i think) and he fucked up part of a line. before that he had stated on the boards that he never heard midnight marauders and never intended to. then after the hiphop honors thing he said he only performed because q-tip begged him to...a claim which q-tip would deny.

In response to Reply # 0

I have heard about both of these, but don't know what really went down. I just found it strange that "I got five on it" remix didn't have Short on it...that song woulda been even more amazing if it had EVERY Bay hitter on there.

I heard the P and Yuk thing was about P taking "Ice cream man" from Yuk, but I'm sure it's more to it.

In response to Reply # 9

It seems like Yuk was more on a thug tip, and Short was old back then LOL seein that he "retired" before "5 on it" even dropped...so I see him as the type to have hella thug connects, but not the type to really be deep on that side.

In response to Reply # 9

It's not really clear what happened between the two. I possibly involved a battle between Luniz and Bad-N-Fluenz, Chris "C&H" Hicks (once involed with Short, then Dru Down) either being owed money or owing money (depending on who you ask), cars possibly being shot at and shot up. No one really talks about it anymore. As far as Too Short getting "run" out of town, no one talks about that either, beyond the fac tthat yes, he moved to Atlanta, and he stayed paid.

all of a sudden talkin bout he the ice cream man. yuk was appropriately salty

The Luniz/$hort beef had to do w C&H being a lame, luniz being young, and everybody trynna eat of $hort's fame basically. It was only peripherally related to his move, which was more about things going on in Oakland and $hort's larger circle at the time.

in fact pimp c went on one of his most realest rants in that interview....talking about how he loves the south, but niggas was only highlighting one part of the game...the exaggerated glorious version, and not giving the ups,and downs..the trials, and tribulations...and a host of other shit...he of course said some stupid shit too in that interview...but you got the best, and the worst with pimp c....

but yeah everybody knows jeezy was calling himself mr. 17.5...and pimp c basically said niggas saying that was lying...

We are not stuck in this state of lower classes because of fascist..it's because we talk all day like cassius while perpetuating our own madness

Meaning that she thought she wasn't getting of it for her contributions to the group.

Throw in rumors that Wyclef had been cheating on his wife with Lauryn, and then that subsequently souring, it all went downhill.

With The Roots hinting that Fugees were biting the concept for their set, while implying that it was The Roots stealing from them (most notably in an issue of Vibe). I believe it also came from the general idea that the Fugees constantly treated them like they were step-children and not on their level.

that Jeru may have clowned Pras somehow in real life when the Fugees were starting out. Jeru was supposedly a bit of a jerk, and the prospect of Praswellington getting dissed/chumped/straight ignored by established rappers (prior to "The Score" blowing up) is pretty damn high.
At the very least I'm sure that Pras knows what weak dap feels like.

...I think some of the things JD said about Dre and Timb made it seem like he was either better than them or had more hits than them or something along those lines. He sounded pretty bitter in that interview. Dre and Timb obviously got word about said interview and the rest is history.

"snatch the mic off LL's arm and " (referring to the microphone tattoo LL has)..something something yada yadda

I dont remember the exact lyric....LL didnt say anything at the time of the studio session...later on he edited out Canibus' verse...and spit a verse dissing him...

and from there the whole thing jumped off.

I'm not even a Canibus fan like that but that was some true bitchmade shit..

In the song "Plucking Cards" off the dope ass "Funk Ya Head Up" album, Kool Keith goes in on LL & Moe Dee, but I was wondering if it was just that he thought both of them was corny or more people paid attention those two beefs than him and he wanted some attention.

I know it's got to be some old school rap heads out there that know what I'm talking about.

Mc Lyte, Kane and a bunch of other people on the song. It couldn't have been anything deeper than competition, that's too many grudges to hold.

I'm glad the beef didn't last long and they got back together cause it seemed more like unnecessary beef cause Brand Nubian still had dope albums without Puba and Puba did have two dope solo albums as well but it seemed like they could've just said they wanted to do solo projects without the beef in the first place.

And Sadat & Jamar were definitely taking shots at Puba in little freestyles at first. So there was animosity at one point in time but again I think it was mainly between Puba & Jamar.
If I remember correctly that had already "broken up" before the "All for One" video (ironically). If you take a look at the video, you can see the separation was there already.

It was almost like you saw the writing on the wall w/ One for All.

The crew blew up, but Puba became a superstar, and he had a number of solo cuts.

Their respective directions were black'n white...with Puba taking an easy-going tone for his solos, almost coasting on his status, and Brand Nubians taking a more serious tone, with more to prove.

From that, you could kinda feel Sadat and Jamar feeling like "Man, fuck you", but not on some full fledged beef. Even as a youngin, I could smell the resentment, but Brand Nubians really stepped up. I'm sure they weren't calling eachother lol

Still, both careers benefited, and they were true friends, so grudges died down. I knew they'd drift back together gradually in the mid 90's.

Even tho I don't necessarily agree.

Puba was old school to the bone. He was a party DJ even when he was young. He was making noise with Masters of Ceremonies in the mid 80's (I remember rocking "Sexy" when I was a shorty, years before I even knew it was Puba), dropped an underrated album with them, then dropped an underrated classic with Brand Nubian a few years later.

After years of honing his skills, people started riding his jock. He ran with it.

Again, I don't agree, but I understand. Sadat and Jamar were basically hit w/ stardom out of their demo phase.

Puba cashed in.

He may have been their brother, but he was most def their big brother.

Oh,ok cuz on that "Shine On" joint he said some stuff about money & "wiggers" so I didn't know if that was Egon or PBW. But he seems to be still cool with 'Lib and them.

edit: i guess i should have some respect tho since ST has helped madlib get to the level he's at...then again, i'd say Madlib basially made ST and ST wouldn't be shit w/o madlib, but i digress...

Like 2 massive crews at a park, the more people on either side, the bigger the chance of beef jumping off from maybe a look or glance, or whatever. Like a powder keg of pride.

It always struck me as 2 groups of gangsters in the same industry, plus tensions were high due to the Ruthless/Cube beef...that ATL might have been SEMI linked to on a technicality.

For all we know, Chilli Chill mighta accidentally brushed up against of then while going to the water fountain lol

They might have felt halfway involved, or stuck in the middle...which would be all it takes matched with "this fool glanced at that fool".

Above the Law rolled with Eazy-E, Lench Mob (and King Sun) were with Cube.

Side note: Above the Law and Dr. Dre fell out around 1992.

For those that don't know, King Sun accused Ice Cube of biting "Wicked" from a demo he played Cube. Sun later "confronted" while FCube was on stage during a show.

People accused Cube of that type of thing all the same. Cypress Hill fell out with him over it; him and Volume 10 beefed over it.

The illest rumor about that situation that I have seen thus far is that
they had the nigga tied up and P called J Prince for permission to pita roll him. Prince said no, obviously.
That's some "Bout It Bout It" pt.2 type shit. Of course it most likely didn't go down that way but considering Master P & J. Prince's reps who knows.

As crucial as the song was to you, it was even more sideways shit he said on there...like how he said "two tramp five sevens pointed at yo chest"....tramp is a diss for the trays out here, which are a subset of Crips (83's or Eight Trays that Monster Kody was from)...so even him sayin that on there had some hoods lookin at him like "nah, you gonna have to calm that shit down!"

Eiht never really recovered...it was a case where he didn't make a lot of dope music after, but even politically...Quik ran with 92.3 tough, and was even cool with Power 106, so you would NEEEEEEEEEEEEEVER hear anything from MC Eiht on radio. In all honesty, the only song I can even think of since 94-95 that I've heard on L.A. radio from MC Eiht is "Candy"...I'm sure Julio G and some other DJ's played his songs on the night time shows, but as far as regular rotation, he definitely hasn't had any or been on any singles that got play here.

especially Eiht when he was in CMW, cats sleep on those records to this day, ITDO.

It got play where The Doc lived at the time, and he hears out here in the Midwest his albums were regarded as classic.

There was even an Eiht "beat". Like when you hear it, you know Eiht is about to rhyme over it ("Growin' Up In Tha Hood", the drums).

Pun/Joe were hot along with Wu, Jay, and all them.

Minus Biggie, Jay was kinda a loner as far as the "in crowd" (Wu, Nas, TS, BCC). I just figured it was pride/clashing and a few minor incidents that escalated.

Add in the fact that Joe and Nas are tight. One of Joe's sons is named Nasir. So when Nas and Jay was beefin...understandably Joe went to war with Nas. I think thats the crux of it really.

I know it might've started during that hip-hop celebrity boxing match, when the then mad-tough-shit talking Tim Dog didn't show, and Foxxx, who took the belt...called them bitches/pussies, or something like that.

I'm not sure which track came first, Freddie's "Crazy like a Foxxx", or Keith's subliminal jab in "4 Horsemen".

The boxing match came before the tracks, but I'd hate to think it started at the boxing match.

the first time The Doc heard "Fuck Compton", he thought dude was really buggin'. Back then, The Doc felt like dissin' NWA was a death wish... dissin' the entire CITY of Compton? You really have to hate your life.

The song was funny as shit, but The Doc's laughs were like... "man, this guy doesn't care about his life".

Anyway, The Doc remembers why Tim Dog was so mad as to make that song. His beef wasn't with NWA, it was w/record labels that felt he had to make his image more "gangsta" in that L.A. way to sell records. They wanted him to wear a Jheri Curl and everything. Tim was like "Fuck that", and that turned into "Fuck Compton".

He had a "Winter Warz" moment on Ultramagnetic's "Chorus Line". I'm not surprised he got a deal.

What was funny was the grade-A tracks Ultra was giving Tim for his album...even moreso than their own album (Funk Your Head Up).

Columbia must have been paying them more for production than Mercury was for Ultra themselves. Tim had some serious tracks.

In response to Reply # 105

Well, my Tim Dog tape.

I was with this girl for most of my teenage years, and she was a "Christian" (she was actually a psycho who went to church every Sunday).

She knew I was infatuated with hip-hop, but it was something she wasn't interested in. Until one day, she asked to borrow a tape to check out. I told her to grab one and didn't pay no mind.

She grabbed "Pennicillin on Wax" (this is when it first dropped, and I was JOCKING the production). She took it home, and listened to "Secret Fantasy" (the original "Fuck an R&B Bitch"...where Timothy actually pee's on En Vogue).

Needless to say, he "negative stereotype" of hip-hop was not only validated, but increased by 75% lol

She left the tape in my mailbox (she lived 2 blocks away). We had an arguement about it even, and she was like "blah blah! How can you listen to that?? Blah!".

In a bold move, I told her I would "prove my love to" her, and I replaced the Tim Dog tape with the Hi-Five tape she had given me lol

I webt to her house, and crushed the tape under my feet...stomping it. Man, she was LOVING that shit. I kicked the remains in the sewer like 4 ft away from me...like a hocket puck, peeeewwwwwww.

Since the plastic case and the tape were all that were smashed, I just got another tape case to put the insert and tape in at home.

It was an Oceans 11 move.

She made my life a living hell in the grand scheme of things.

Type of chick who did psycho stuff, but when it came to everyone else, she pressed the Jesus angle.

Trust me, you don't want no parts.

I actually looked her up on myspace once, after 16 years, out of curiosity...her "innocent, sexy" smile made me nauseous for 2 days. I felt like a Vietnam vet who heard a gun shot.

>De La vs. Naughty by Nature

Treach took offense to a line Pos kicked on the intro to the "Stakes Is High" album. Something about "So stick to your Naughty By Nature and your Kane." IT was actually supposed to be part of a larger verse where Pos mentioned the names of lots of rappers, but that was the only part that got left in. Treach thought it was a dis, and ended up pulling Pos off the stage at a show.

>De La vs. Jungle Brothers

I've never known the particularly of why the Native Tongues broke up.

>Tribe Called Quest vs. Wrecks-N-Effects

Wrecks took offense at Phife's "Strictly hardcore tracks, never New Jack Swing" line on "Jazz." So they jumped Q-Tip. Afrika Bambatta (and possbily Farakhan) stepped in and swuashed it, because it was Zul Nation and NOI fighting.
