Both cds are very mood oriented.

You ride to Speakerboxx...

You kick back to Love Below...

...It's really that simple. I don't even see how cats is trying to compare them. It's like saying a Jigga cd is better than an R. Kelly one. They're two completely different styles.

Dre took shit way too far this time. I have'nt been feeling Outkast since Aquemini. I guess Dre says he's tired of hip-hop now. Fuck that! Nigga stop making Beatles tunes and labeling them as hip-hop. Fuck is all this costume shit anyway. That shit ain't OG. P-Funk came with all that shit back in the 70's. Big Boi was trying hard to keep it real for a minute, but even he could no longer circum to the urge of dressing like a complete idoit and making stupid ass, circus music. Big back the real shit, then holla at me.

But yeah "Speakerboxx" is fucking great. The thing that I was wondering is how come a hip-hop group is using a horn section better than just about any r&b act that came out in the last fifteen years?

For real, what keyboard or expansion card did they use on that one? Surprising to hear that it's not live.

Come to grips with the fact that most OKP's are of the Nut Hugger lineage, so, if you' re not part of the little cliques that exist 'round here, your posts will probably tank like Souljaboy's album sales.

In response to Reply # 0

typically I have a disdain for something so hyped up and over-commercialized. So I usually eskew purchases of such music until the hype dies down and I don't have people cramming stuff down my throat. I'm not really excited or interested much overall. I haven't bought anything from 'Kast since ATLiens (which I enjoy). I can't say that hearing Dre sing interest me at all either. Dude is a dope MC, I'd rather hear ryhmes. Big Boi has always been just OK as an MC. Not that he's bad, he's effective and I'll give him his props. But the thought of a solo effort from him doesn't excite me either.

Basically, the only reason I'm considering this is because of the hype. I'm willing to go against my better judgement if someone can give me convincing reasons to buy it.

I didn't say I didn't like 'Kast past ATLiens. I just haven't bought nor cared to hear anything since then. Ofcourse the singles always get my attention. But I've never really been compelled to buy more albums. The only difference now is that I'm becoming a vicitim of the hype on the boards. There's almost a 50/50 split on this one which is interesting.

It's a mental condition really. It's like being a rebel w/o a cause. So gimme your opinion on it. I'm open. 'Kast is just one of those groups to me. I'm pretty neutral.

Especially if they're still 11 bucks at Best Buy and Circuit City. You're bound to feel some of the songs off both albums, I promise. You'll probably end up doing what most on here are up to which is to combine the two into one nice streamlined CD that won't force them to listen to songs they didn't like the first couple times around. Nothing like controlled open mindedness.

I started with Speakerboxxx and didn't get all the way thru it. Some good stuff. But I decided to really give TLB a spin. This ish is ill. I'm loving the contrasting textures in the production. And really, this nigga sound like he was having a ball making this album. I don't think there's been a song where I didn't laugh my a## off thus far.

I hear you. I pretty much try to stay away from hype like this as well, but honestly the only joint I'd heard was hey ya, sce I didn't download. But since andre supposedly tried something diferent, I decided to pay 10.99 at best buy and chalk t up. Perhaps contribute to some type of a mainstream change in hip hop (too idealistic, huh?) that many underground acts have been trying to do for a while. I'ts not the best I've heard, but the album as a whole is creative enough to be in my collection. And like you, the last outkast album I bought was aquemini, so...

as a maxi single or EP, it would be amongst the best hip-hop albums of the last two years. That says a little bit more about Dre's genius than it is an indictment on the state of hip-hop..

No wonder folks miss Dre's rappin' ! I am not mad at the Love Below though; the album is a much needed and surreal music experience. Now let me check Big Boi's contribution.

Vocally that is what it sounds like to me vocally.the best song by Andre.but the Albums are a bit overrated IMHO.I don't hear all this Greatness.I Hear a Group who made a smart Marketing Move&have some decent tracks but nothing that sounds remotely Ground-Breaking IMHO.

My fellow "Rap Review Alliance" members,
I want to give you my review of the new Outkast CD. I can describe the entire set with one word: TRASH. Let's start with Big Boi - Speakerboxx. There are some nice songs on this CD - about four. The rest sounds like they were put together in 15 minutes. He captured half of the Oukast formula. Unfortunately, it was the ridiculous half. Thoroughly disappointing!

On to Andre 3000 - The Love Below. The King Of Weird takes being a weirdo to a new level. Let me start by saying this CD is not a rap CD - so don't think hip-hop. It reminds me of a poorly executed Prince CD. Obviously, he was heavily influenced by Prince. I'm sure all of you have heard "Hey Yak". This song was released because it's the only thing worth being released on the CD. It's the breakout song and we all know it sounds like trash. Anytime you declare, "god is a woman", you know the CD is heading downhill from there. Unique is not a word I would use to describe this CD. Weird perhaps is not strong enough... ah, I got it. The correct phrase is WASTED TIME.

It's a shame that two great artist would waste time like this on a two CD set. I'd rather listen to Johnny Cash. Outkast owes us an apology. If anyone on this distribution list buys this CD, it's not my fault, you've been WARNED. I will not even burn this CD for anyone - BLANK CDs ARE 10 CENT EACH - TOO EXPENSIVE TO WASTE THEM ON THIS TRASH!!!!

wow, tha't an ignorant take. like saying that sgt. peppers was a warmed over monkees album. there's way too much good stuff happening on these albums, and to say that TLB sounds like a bad prince project not only shows his ignorance of prince but of the p-funk and soul that dre is pulling from.

remember, there was really good music before 1981. look into it sometime.

right now, Bowtie is my fav on both discs, but Love Below is the more interesting of the two discs. No standout favorites yet, but I am somehow stuck on the smack of the Sista's lips during "Where Are My Panties"...

In response to Reply # 230

listen to it. he hides it in small ways that youre not really hearing unless you LISTEN to it

here are some examples:

"So what if your head sports a couple of grey hairs"

"(In a Claire Huxtable type way)"

"You show me how it's supposed to be done
I'll make sure you have young fun"

"Why don't (why don't) you teach me something new?
We're all (we're all) just babies in my view
So crawl baby"

"PRETTY pink, BABY (there you go) Blue"

*this one's kinda obivious*
"You're sophisticated
Just me and miss lady
**You've got me talkin like a baby**
You make me talk baby talk"
- and
"Got me talkin like a baby
Like ga ga and goo goo
Oh momma"

Oh MOMMA?

all those, references to an older lady, and him expressing SOME type of interest in her
hmmMMmMmmm.

this has got to be the dopest song ever.
and yes. the strings ending this track are god speaking in the form of a violin.

were totally flipped around with this one. i'm finding the speakerboxx a lot more funkier and as everyone has said, genuine outkast. i was expecting him to put out a ludacris cd (which wouldn't have been bad mind u). i wasn't expecting this much of a change on the love below. i like it. it's dope, it's a lot more than i was expecting. it's like, i was expecting electric circus, but got a prince album instead.

i'm feeling speakerboxx much more right now, but i haven't been able to listen to either one too much just yet.

Took out the interludes, put all the rest of the songs in an Ipod playlist, told it to shuffle, and let it run. Ahhhhhhhh, now that's what I'm talking about!

The juxtaposition of styles is what I've always loved about 'Kast, and this way I get to mix it up without having to switch back and forth from one CD to the next.

In response to Reply # 0

i've been listening to it since yesterday and that's what i've come up with so far. maybe it'll grow on me more over the next few days. there are plenty of moments of greatness, but i don't hear them strung together as well as previous efforts.

what's lacking:

- Outkast chemistry (i.e. Big Boi & 3000 collaborating fully rather than making cameos on each other's works)
- stellar guests: Luda comes average and Jay-Z's verse is pretty limp
- Dre actually rapping: yeah, it's been mentioned, but i'll reiterate: Dre's a great lyricist with a good flow and it sucks to have him limited to singing and warbling.

also, before any shnooks start bellowing about growth and change, i did dig Stankonia and Like Water for Chocolate (although haven't picked up EC), so i don't think i'm trying to pigeonhole them.

to paraphrase:

THE BAR IS HOLDING STEADY!

prototype is alright, but I can name about 10 earth, wind, and fire songs that do this song better. Not to mention anyone from the soul "trinity." I don't know, I dig dracula's wedding for some reason, but he should have just let kelis sing and not him. His best song is Lives in My Lap. A valiant effort overall, just a bit flawed in my opinion

listen to these album(s). give them an honest listen; do not listen once and toss them.

outkast are growing musically as artists. they cannot and will not repeat themselves. do not expect them to do so; i have confidence that their next album could consist entirely of opera-aria over polka and outkast would find a way to make it work.

one of the ways most hip-hop artists fail is in that they do not improve their game, rather they continually rehash themselves, spouting the same things time and again, the only things changing being the situations they 'rap' about.

speakerboxxx & the love below are the evolution of hip-hop.

if you aren't with it, that doesn't mean you're stupid, it just means you don't like where this kind of hip-hop is going; so, you're better off sticking to the stagnating styles that rap has become (at least in the mainstream).

that outkast have the balls to release these albums.. is both amazing for them a breath of fresh hope for hip-hop in general.

broaden your horizons; listen to speakerboxxx & the love below.

...y'all are acting like you just found the rosetta stone of hip-hop.

Speakerboxx is a good hip-hop album and The love Below is a lot of fun but this isn't the evolutionary change that you think it is.

It's just good music.

Let's not get carried away here.

I think that the instant classic status laid upon
these albums, especially TLB, is more a statement
about the sad, cookie-cutter, state of hip-hop.
I think these are some GREAT albums, but I have heard
people comparing Andre 3000 to Prince and (GASP) a
hip-hop Miles Davis. SLOW DOWN (c) Brand Nubian!

They continue to grow as artists and that's cool, but
shouldn't all artist evolve like this. And what amazes
me is how we trash other artist for doing the same!

To restate my position, this is a great album! They took a
risk and it seems to be paying off. Hopefully this will
inspire more artists to evolve. But, cool it on the greatest
album ever talk, and the Andre is a genius talk. I am
not just talking to OKP here, but I hear this at work and
in the streets!

On another note, this might be a good time to release
Kamal the Abstract!!!

Andre's singing is no better than lumidee's, and big boi's taste in beats did not satisfy me whatsoever.

They've been slipping since Aquemini to me, anyway. To each his own.

i love "love below".. no shit.. that is probably the 1st or 2nd best record of the year.. i couldn't even go into explaining it or reasoning with you as to why it is so tight.. it just refreshing.. andre 3000 is the premier artist in music right now.. he is, to my generation, what prince was to his generation, what clinton was to that generation, etc..

as far as big boi goes, i highly underestimated the impact of his album.. crazy production, good hooks (for the most part) and some ill lyrics.... BUT! i still feel that there isn't anything holding the album together.. it just seems like some really good tracks (minus the joint with ludacris and the shit with lil jon) compiled on one cd.. basically, when i hear "speakerboxx", i hear 1/2 of outkast.. when i hear "the love below" i hear an individual genius/artist doin his thang...

yea this is the album of the year thus far.
'speakerboxxx' is the shit rap album and solidifies big boi as one of the greats, which is actually looked over a lot b/c everyone always talks mass about dre.
'the love below' is different but i enjoy it after listening to it again. i think he needs to get back to rapping and collaborating with big boi.
well done boys. keep the dream going for real.

This album with its progessive tone on Big Boi and Andre 3000's behalf will definitely change things in hip hop. For the better. The bar has been raised,a lot of artist will rip this shit off... record company's are probably looking for a Andre/Big Boi like duo/group to push. This might be good for music in general.

...I say that becasue I think Andre is one of the top 5 best emcees out right now.....top 20 greatest of all time.....and he is.."wasting it" on singing. I can't really accept such a talent lyricist not even spittin hardly on his own LP.."The life and times" is what I have on repeat...

Now me saying that I do like Love Below, they are some good songs..and 3000 is talented yes..but ya'll chill out with that genius shit though...IT just shows the current state of music more than anything...with music made by beat machines, samplers, Reason, Fruity Loops and Protools, anybody who breaks from the norm and acually play a damn gutiar now is hailed as a genius......

Eveybody is just on the hype of the Outkast high right now.....time will blow ya'll buzz....

I think they are still there but in a less obvious more stylized way, Speakerboxxx is breast-like and The Love Below has flowers. . . female genitals of plants.

Blah...double blah. I hate this cd, and if you ask me what I'm feeling MORE, just for the sole purpose of saying "Speakerboxxx" is better...I'll tell you right now, nothing. Nothing out there right now has me happy.

This is some George Clinton-meets-Bomb Squad type stuff...with some 808's thrown in there for "old school bass" good measure.

It's gotten to a point, where after "Aquemini", and "Stankonia", where people will love Outkast for doing anything. Even when Big Boi tried to do the 808-retro thing, it was ruined by these techno-J.B. horns, that didn't even fit in the first place, let alone done right. In the blaze of aural pain, I found myself tempted to return the cd, totally oblivious to the fact that I borrowed it.

I hope this catches Tariq.

I'm listening to "Sketches of Spain".

Specifically "Cosmic Slop" and "Mothership Connection"...listen to these albums and then listen to "The Love Below". Fuck Prince! Andre 3000 is on some ol' retro Funkadelic vibe and that's so part of what I love listening to. Cosmic Slop is a bit rock/country and r&b, funk and jazz. The singing was not the greatest, either, but these guys played some crazy shit and it seemed as if each song blended, for 30-35 minutes. Plus, they sometimes talk over the music (MCing/rap?).

One of my earliest memories is of my Pops playing back-to-back Parliament/Funkadelic records (and smoking weed). I would just climb up on the couch (I was a toddler) and feel the music. I'm playing the CDs right now.

The Love Below took me back right away and I love this CD. But this is 2003 and I can see why so many younger cats can't feel it. Nowadays, producers take the original music, sampling bits and pieces and boosting the bass...until the melody, the orchestration becomes a disjointed mess. I liked the mess because I could hear the original music behind the samples but Andre 3000 said "Fuck That" and he went back to the source, giving The Love Below a contemporary spin.

My point is that, unless you understand George Clinton's vision you're gonna miss what even Prince was trying to capture at times (along with James Brown) and what The Love Below is really about: music music.

It took a while for me to put The Love Below down to listen to Speakerboxxx but I am feeling this CD, too. The only problem is that sometimes you get caught up in the rap aspect rather than music. It's all music but I get tired of the rap sometimes. Nowadays, I expect folks to show talent on the music side more than the rap. I want artists to switch up, take risks and make good music.

BASICALLY!

I think it's about time someone realized that. I was trying to explain that to a friend the other day. The Love Below is bascially the entire Parliment movement from Dre's perspective. It's about the music. It took a minute for the singing to grow on me, but I was always feelin the music. The anaolgy I gave my friend was Jimmy Hendricks. I'm not comparing 3000 to Hendricks, but in both situations...it's about the music. Hendricks couldn't sing worth shit, but you feel them gutiar licks. Same with Dre...some of his singing IS cool, but he falls short sometimes. But the music is hot.

Am I the only one that thought this was a pretty interesting track? Interesting concept, and I loved the guitars and the synths(?) they used to make the beat. I find myself playing this one over a few times before I move onto my Favorite Things.

I feel that..Right now, I'm stuck on Roses, Spread, Prototype, Unhappy, and Reset.

The release isn't perfect.

Dre's singing can wear on you (especially when he falls short at crucial times).

and

Big Boi's album sometimes screams 'Hey! I'm only doing this because Dre hasn't come back around to our group thing yet!'

It is still impressive that they basically pulled off the 'we did separate albums but we're still a group' thing.

They are probably 'better' as a true group, but I'm still down with them. And they have balls to even go through with this.

This is no different than Prince coming out with "When You Were Mine" or "If I Was Your Girlfriend"...or any of the other "pushing the envelope" songs he created..in terms of style and innovation this is pure genius. Not saying Outkast is on w/The Purple One in terms of musical ability....BUT you will see others copying it in a few more years just like Bombs Over Bagdhad....now you got The Roots and Diddy of all people doing techno....

by my peers, friends, clients...etc. since this Outkast album came out. They've called me close minded, "normal", "uppity", "boring", "u don't know real music", "corny". All because I think that Dre album is a piece of trash. I've never liked Big Boi, but on Speakerboxx I can at least appreciate a few songs....but compared to that Love below bullshit....Speakerbox sounds like Illmatic.

I can appreciate music experimentation if the shit is good. But although there is a central theme to the Dre shit, it seems like a bunch of incomprehensible shit to me.....best part is skit with the girl "is he gon think I'mma ho". He sounds like an off key Bilal.........without quality songs that Bilal had (excluding Dr. Dre shit). I've REALLY tried to listento it, but for some reason I get a headache around track 5....before u say it, I have listened to the whole thing like 6 or 7 times....but I just don't get it. I've since given away my Dre CD to this dude that works at my mechanics shop.

If this is album of the year, then hmmmmm.....I must be missing it, like I missed Aquem, Stank, and the rest of them. I never really understood Outkast and this CD has created more of a seperation between my musical tastes and their musical direction. As one of my friends said I guess "Weirdos Rule"

"Ernest Lee is Shorty. In the Little Leagues, he can front like he’s something important, but any attempt to move into the big time leaves him exposed, shocked, and utterly outclassed". - (taken from the Blowhard league archives)

One man's trash is another man's treasure. And I like, no love, the Love Below. I don't know about the Bilal comparison. He may not be a good vocalist but he can write one hell of a melody.

That's exactly how I feel. I simply don't understand why everyone likes Outkast. I'm starting to think that it's kind of the in thing to do, to act like you just love this album. People jumping all over the bandwagon... I mean, come on. Even if you do like it, you can't like an album THIS much... And it's hard to believe THIS many people like it THAT much, all while I can't stand either Big Boi's disc, nor Andre's, nor any of their other albums. Not that it's impossible for me to dislike something while somebody else loves it, but not to this degree... We're all hip hop heads, we all know what good hip hop is, so lets cut the bullshit, make some compromises, and say that this album is an average album.

This album isn't average by hardly any criteria (especially hiphop). It is just too interesting to be average IMO.

There aren't 15 Speakerboxxx's from this year. And Freeway didn't just do a Love Below-type album.

ie: Joe Budden's album is around average. Quite a few cool tracks. A few standouts. Some 'clever' mixtape lines with a few standout lines. Average.

SB/TLB slaps that album around in ugly fashion.

"Muthafuck the wagon. Come join the band."

Me? Bandwagon?

I have been a fan of Outkast since ATLiens. (well before I became an internet poster and before I became 'the master of funk'.)

My roomdog from college showed up with the CD, and it(and both emcees) grew on me something fierce.

I knew of Southerplayalistic, but it wasn't a staple in my playlist. And one of my boys used to wear out Funky Ride to the point that I didn't wanna hear it again.

Anyway...

This release is THAT good to me (RS needs to give it a 4.0). These albums aren't perfect, but they shame the 'average' emcee and the 'average' hiphop release with general ease.

The work is not the drastic departure that folks say it is.

It is (in ways) drastically different from hiphop's norm, but it is another step in the path that Outkast has been taking from the jump. And I enjoy the hell out of it.

Big Boi's album is subtly topical and mostly funky throughout. Dre has been the more 'interesting' of the two, but Big Boi was dope at first, and he's easily a much better emcee right now.

The Love Below is my jam. Dre and his P-Funk/Bootsy/Sly singing/talking/etc can wear on you, and there are a few times where his voice isn't what it needs to be, but the ideas and the music is there. He just proved that making an album with one main theme (and some connection between some songs) is not the impossible mission that cats make it out to be. He pulled off the hiphop influenced album that Prince never really did with much less vocal talent IMO.

People do the same thing to me. Call me "closed minded" and say I don't appreciate music just cuz I don't like this Outkast album. I mean, hell. I like them on ALL their other albums except this one, and now I'm closed minded? Damn. People be tripping for real. I admitted to people that I didn't like Electric Circus, just thought Phrenology was decent but not great, thought Quality was decent but also not great, and I keep catching all this flack from Okayplayers. I just want to know since when did underground loving cats suddenly become the big haters on the hiphop scene? My have things changed.

I agree with every statement you made except the one concerning this album...the new album from Common is weak, Kweli's is so-so, and the Roots is far above average, but not as good as Things Fall Apart...this new Kast is on some other ish, though...Neither disc is as coherent as one of the Outkast longplayers, but both have moments of absolute brilliance, especially when compared to most of the stuff being put out

except Chingy...that guy's a genius

The first thing I thought when I heard the lp is "what is the cat on????" But after a couple of spins and some listens in the car, I'm slowly understanding. You can't listen to it expecting Dre to have the nicest singing voice, because he doesn't. Also, don't listen to it expecting to here your conventional stuff because it's not that either. Take everything you ever learned about music and throw it out the window, then listen to it. At the same time, listen some of Parliament's stuff, and Bootsy, and early Prince and see the direction is going (he hasn't gotten there yet, but you can hear the influences). Andre 3000 is trying to change the game. I think the key is he has to not try and just let it come. You have to listen to "the Love Below" with a a totally different ear. I stopped expecting to hear complex harmonics and Coletrane riffs. I started expecting simple licks and easy melodies. I stopped looking for extraordinarily deep subject matter and started expecting... I don't know what I started expecting but whatever it was, it worked. The Love Below is an acquired taste and as a musician and OutKast fan, it was hard for me to admit to enjoying it. There are some throwaway tracks but overall, it's a solid effort. Of course, if you do all this and still don't like it, so be it.

Speakerboxxx I'm still evaluating. Initially, I LOVE Hornz Unlimited particularly on Bowtie. And I think Big Boi can handle a whole lp by himself. But his production needs help. I think with better production, his jawn could be nice.

262. "it's the new funk"
In response to Reply # 0

it's pretty clear to me that outkast represents the first proper acceptance of the funk into hip-hop. they aren't sampling it, they aren't copping the licks, they aren't even paying just homage to the great p-funk, prince, sly, ohio players, and countless other funk legends..... they are making new funk. fresh new funk with all the power and creativity that is hip-hop. to understand funk is to know that it always picked up what was around at the time. james brown did it with a 'soul' band, sly did it with a mixed race soul & rock band, larry graham did it with the gospel stylings, ohio players did it with ohio stankiness, bootsy did it from outer space, bernie worrell did it with synthesizer technology, trouble funk did it with the never ending break, fishbone did it with ska, the chilis did it with punk rock, etc. etc. etc.. it comes in many forms but you can taste it when it appears. funk is from the earth - the farther you get from it the more detached from yourself you become, and the harder you fall when gravity gets you.

outkast has finally done it with hip-hop. that's why this album is more than just hip-hop, it's pulling in all sorts of influences (especially dre's side). it's all black music from the beginning of this country and it's deep as hell. i don't know if i consider it hip-hop's "best" cd, but it's will certainly be seen by me as one of it's most important.

and i agree that in many ways the hype is a product of the sad state of the music business. black artists used to drop records like this far more frequently than they do now.
