...which is somewhat shameful considering how much I LOVE the Minutemen. In my defense, there hasn't been a moment actually unless I wanted to download it. Alternative Sweden in the 80's was strictly british "indie"-pop (Cure, Smiths, New Order), the few of us that cared about anything else (read:american, rocking stuff) were left out in the cold and this attitude is (unfortunately) still omnipresent. Basically:bands like Minutemen ain't shit here so I guess I have to get an import. Same with the Fugazi-flick which is another great band who has never meant shit here in indie-circles...

I still laugh about when Isaac Brock was getting interviewed in some magazine during the Good News era and talking about how this film builds up their album getting rejected to being this incredible obstacle to overcome but then reflecting on how that compared to problems within Modest Mouse.

His reply was something along the lines of "dude, our drummer was in a *mental hospital*".

i had been following the production through whats-his-face's website forever and ever, seeing all his little teaser clips, and he just dropped the ball so huge.

that annoying douchebag from rolling stone getting like 20 minutes of screen time.

i was so excited about that movie, and i'm still convinced there's a great movie in all the reels, but the ship had the wrong captain.

fuck

i'm still mad about it 6+ years later

I still enjoy the Definitive Jux label documentary that was included on The Revenge Of The Robots DVD. I'd be interested in an updated doc on the label though. Artists have come and gone since then.

Another documentary I really enjoy is Dilated Peoples' The Release Date.

is incredible. . even if you're not a big Dylan fan, the film documents the whole
transition of folk music into rock n roll and everything that was happening in the 60's.
the footage is breathtaking..

Gimme Shelter - a doc about The Rolling Stones by the brothers Maysles, 2 of the most important doc. film makers of all time. it leads up to the fatal shooting at the concert in San Fran in 1968.

The Kids Are Alright - a doc about The Who. i was never a huge Who fan, but it's a good film.

i've got straight no chaser at home but haven't had a chance to watch it.

some recent ones i've watched and liked

theremin an electronic oddyssey
loudquietloud - a film about the pixies
sonic outlaws
talking heads - stop making sense
moog

anyone seen five sides of a coin? i haven't but just wondering.

also, young at heart was a really good documentary about a chorus of elderly people singing songs like bowie's golden years, clash, jimi hendrix, and james brown. very inspiring.

this is a wonderful film for sure. it's one of the rare "music documentaries" that people who aren't even into music (would) love.

i kept thinking about it after i watched it. it was the last movie to make me cry. when the guy sang fix you at the end after the other guy passed was moving. it was a great song choice even before that happened.

if i can find a young @ heart chorus near me when i'm that old i'm down.

Jazz on a Summer's Day - shot at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival.

in a similar vein, there's FESTIVAL!, which documents the Newport Folk Festival from I think 1963 through 1965. Incredible variety of music presented. Plus a great bit of narration fromm future cult leader Mel Lyman!

I've also got The Other Side of the Mirror (Dylan's Newport performances) but haven't watched it yet. Don't quite know what I'm waiting for.

29. "Tom Dowd And The Language of Music"
In response to Reply # 0

http://www.thelanguageofmusic.com/

A man who seemingly fit many lives into one lifetime, Tom Dowd was born on October 20, 1925 in New York City. At a young age he excelled in mathematics and physics, leading to his work from the ages of 16 to 20 on the Manhattan Project at Columbia University. In 1946, as a sergeant in the Army Corps of Engineers, he oversaw a team of radiation detection specialists at the atomic bomb tests in Bikini Atoll. After his discharge from Army, he soon began applying his science background to help revolutionize the process of recording music. While working for Atlantic Records, his pioneering work in binaural stereo recording, and later his design of the eight-track console, modernized the recording industry.

Tom Dowd produced and engineered timeless records for artists including Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonius Monk, Cream, Rod Stewart, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers Band, Dusty Springfield and countless other celebrated musicians. Dowd also formed both strong professional and personal relationships with many of these artists, including Eric Clapton, starting with Cream and leading to their working partnership on Layla and Other Assorted Loves Songs and collaborations on several of Clapton's finest solo albums.

Tom Dowd passed away on October 27, 2002, one week after his 77th birthday. He will never be forgotten.

I've watched it in the past four-five years, it's near the top for me.

Over the course of my life, there's no music DVD I've watched more than The Last Waltz.

the one that comes to mind that i've seen several times is nine inch nails' closure because of how good it is but also because of my age when it came out, how into NIN i was, and it being the first music film i remember seeing and definitely the first i owned. the next one i think i owned is radiohead's meeting people is easy, which isn't as repeat watchable, i agree, but still worth revisiting every few years.

rewatch multiple times without hesitation (particularly if it's a late-night back with people entertaining scenario). Toss a good concert flick on with the home theater going and zone out or just have it on in the background.

Even music DVDs that I don't love I've probably seen multiple times, I've watched that Coachella movie (skipping around a bit of course) probably more than ten times and I don't even really like that much of it.

It's a great documentary.
the live footage of Donny singing The Ghetto is amazing.
I wish there was more of his live performances available on video.

and yeah, I'm kicking myself for not owning that Fela DVD.

We used to play it in the club I worked in, and I've seen it a zillion times. But my friend owns a store and he was selling it for 30 bucks.

me: "THIRTY BUCKS?!?!?! I'll wait"
*walks down the street and buys 50 bucks worth of booze and carryout*

now I feel like a douche, because I can't find it anywhere.

Really good film... Has some OKayPlayer artists... I'm actually gonna watch it right now cuz I haven't in a while... And it came with a soundtrack that had some dope hip hop/soul music on it... It's actually where I first heard of Hope (Shorter)... Beautiful voice... I'm sure most know who she is now...

that flick damn near changed my life. well not really but the fact that I haven't seen it in nearly a decade is a testament to how good it is.

at the time, it captured the essence of the whole 'underground/backpacker' movement b4 it became so played out and cliched.
