"Songs you didn't understand when you were younger"

After clowning my 17 year old cousin for askin me, "why did 112 like Peaches and Cream so much? Nobody even likes that flavor"...I realized that there were a lot of songs that I didn't catch when I was growing up. With some, I just didn't get the symbolism...and with some, I didn't understand what the slang or main topic was about until I got older.

So without worrying about somebody teasing you for your age (or lack of it)...waht songs do you admit to not understanding back in the day?

"masturbating with a magazine"

so it's 1985, i'm 9 years old.. i had a general idea of what masturbating was, but was still naive to the process.

so i thought nikki actually rolled up the magazine into cylindrical shape and, well, you know..

...I too was 9 in 1985. I was in spelling class one day and we were going over the words for that day in our spelling books. When we got to the word 'grind', my teacher asked the class if anyone knew what the word meant. Well, since I had heard the word being used in Darling Nikki, I quickly raised my hand because I just KNEW I had this one in the bag. I was about to tell my teacher it was the word Prince used on the song about Nikki on the Purple Rain tape.

Thank God my teacher actually called on another kid with a raised hand because when that kid answered it correctly, I quickly realized my error and damn near slumped at my desk, thinking about the embarassment I was saved from. Man, I don't know what would've happened if I would've been the one to give the answer. Thanks Prince.

The Doc struggled with "dance on the floor, in the round". That's the most hilarious roundabout way to say that...

so for years, The Doc used to use "dancing on the floor...in the round" as his preferred euphemism.

In response to Reply # 0

And yes, it was my favorite album...but I was 8. I didn't know what Doggystyle was at all...I just figured his name was Snoop Doggy Dogg....so it was just a play on his name.

When I learned what doggystyle was, I was still kinda slow, because I only thought of it as a name for what humans do, and didn't put it together until I saw two dogs gettin it, and I was like "OHH SHIT, THEY REALLY DO HAVE SEX DOGGYSTYLE!!!!" and my homeboy was like "you idiot....that's where they get the name from."

I DEFINITELY didn't know what it meant...then I remember at church, my cousin was like "it stands for Other People's Property" so I figured it was about stealing from people. I honestly don't even think I realized it stood for "pussy" until a few years ago, even though I got what the song meant.

this one kinda made me laugh...I remember when that song came out, I think we were 5th grade, kids were talking about it in music class ---
teacher asks: what does OPP stand for?

kids: Other People's Property

other kids: but for the ladies, it means something different!

teacher: what does it mean for them?

kids: something different, you know

--
they couldn't answer beyond what the lyrics literally said, not that I knew any better

I think in the Police box set they talk about that, and you also have to consider the band's punk rock roots. It's funny to think that here was a band heavy into punk and new wave, with all of the sarcasm included, and they ended up being known for "Every Breath You Take".

In fact, there was controversy when the song first dropped as a single, with some NY stations refusing to play it because they thought ODB was advocating unsafe sex (this was during the height of the '90s AIDS awareness push). ODB went as far as to record a PSA explicitly saying that the line was about liking raw hip-hop, not unprotected sex.

In response to Reply # 38

She's not the biggest hip hop head, and when the song came on in the club we were at, I was telling her how big the song was when it came out. She thought the song was a bit perverse, so I had to explain to her that they made a PSA in NY of him talking about "the only thing I like raw is my music" before the song played.

>In fact, there was controversy when the song first dropped as
>a single, with some NY stations refusing to play it because
>they thought ODB was advocating unsafe sex (this was during
>the height of the '90s AIDS awareness push). ODB went as far
>as to record a PSA explicitly saying that the line was about
>liking raw hip-hop, not unprotected sex.

But what's the deal with "Reasons?" Let me check the lyrics...

*Reads lyrics*

Hmm....so is he just saying "I wanna hit it....and I might act like I love you, but I don't"?? I donno...it was still hard for me to decipher.

I have played this song a griip of times, and never listened to...ok, never understood what they were sayin most of the time, LOL.

about idealized love, or something like that.

But I agree with your interpretation more or less in that the song appears to be about a one night stand.

LOL! Seriously...

I get the impression he & his friend Julio used to get into mad trouble together and they got caught mid sex act with Rosie (the Queen of Corona) at the park or something like that...

No clue why it would end up on the cover of Newsweek though.

until I received knowledge of self. Brand Nubian, Wu Tang, Rakim, Guru, even some of Nas's lyrics went over my head as a youngster. Its like they were speaking in code, and understanding the Lessons and Supreme Mathematics helped me to figure it out.

I would imagine its still like this for 85's that are into hip hop.

>After clowning my 17 year old cousin for askin me, "why did

51. "MacArthur Park"
In response to Reply # 0

I liked Donna Summer's version, but does anyone really know the true meaning of the song even now?

There's been a number of different interpretations put on it over the years ranging from it being about a sexual encounter in the park, or about drugs, or a lost love. It's so steeped in symbolism and metaphor with what appears to be silly lyrics with references to cakes and baking etc.

I've always felt the interpretation about losing the love of one's life to be the most likely meaning, the cake being the metaphor for the relationship which took time and effort to build up (took so long to bake it) and never finding a person like that again (never have that recipe again). The cake being left out in the rain symbolizing the neglect and loss of the relationship, and so forth.

But in general there still appears to be a lot of ambiguity surrounding the song.

In response to Reply # 55

It clocked in at 7:20. The Beatles had "Hey Jude", which was 7:11, but Richard Harris (who recorded "MacArthur Park" first) decided no, let's go another 9 seconds.

As the song climbed the charts, it was apparently a song no one could escape, especially since it changed style and tempo throughout the song. This is unlike the Donna Summer version, which begins as a ballad before it goes into disco mode. Because of its popularity, people began to figure out what the song meant and no one could.

...he is known for being very abstract. This is a guy who also wrote a lot of classics:
Wichita Lineman
Up, Up And Away
By The Time I Get To Phoenix
When It Was Done
The Yard Went On Forever

There's a good chance that if you listen to a lot of oldies radio (60's and 70's music), you may not know Jimmy Webb by name but you most definitely have heard his work. In fact, check this Wikipedie entry:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_songs_by_Jimmy_Webb

But yes, "MacArthur Park" is about love lost, done through heavy metaphor.

I was just thinkin about it...when I was 8-10, I didn't understand most sexual terminology....such as "Sleeping together" or "Making love"...so I just thought it was literal...or that "making love" was just being in the bed kissing and holding. I thought they'd say "having sex" or even "fuckin" if that's what they were doin, LOL

when were like 9....

I borke the news to them that "making love" meant having sex...he wouldnt hear of it...

he insisted that "making love" was simply a term for making out(kissing, fondling, etc)

after that discovery, I went back and listened to a bunch of songs where female singers talked abt "making love" and I was shocked....

the first song when the terminology really hit me was Whitney's Saving All my Love For You...

I was like "is she saying that she wants to freak all night???...woooooooow"

or one of my childhood faves, Feel Like Making Love...."she's saying that she wants to have sex????....woooooow...."

the idea of women demanding or requesting sex in song was still alien to me...

85. "Led Zeppelin-The Immigrant Song"
In response to Reply # 0

I've known this song since I was 5, my first exposure to it being a Taiwai pressing of the album, with the flimpy plastic cover. Before I knew the words, I had no idea why it was called "The Immigrant Song" when Robert Plant did not even say the word immigrant. It wasn't until years later that I discovered he was saying:

"The hammer of the gods
will drive our ships to new lands"

That's when it made sense.

In response to Reply # 0

as for the 1st, i couldn't figure out the lyrics for most of the song including the chorus. i didn't know anything about making babies so maybe that's why i didn't understand that they were singing "If we cannot make babies maybe we can make some time" in the chorus. it made no sense to me but it sounded good whatever they were saying.

for the latter, i didn't know what he was getting at about wanting to be his woman's girlfriend. i just put it off to the side. and the end part where he talks about wanting to kiss her "down there where it counts"...i thought he was talking about drinking pee or som'n like that. i didn't quite know what was going on but i knew it was nasty and i liked that part. i knew it was som'n i shouldn't listen to and that made me want to listen.

fuck you.

I was very young...like between 7 and 10, and I don't remember much except that I would walk around singing the song's title, having no idea what it mean; I was so embarrassed when I found out what it meant...
