I never understood how some of the most brilliant artists like Sam Cooke, Duke Ellington, and Aretha Franklin came from Gospel backgrounds. Gospel is without a doubt the most anti-intellectual, derivative, and boring genre of music. How could this creatively stifling environment give birth to such greatness. I think Gospel probably got these artists interested in music, but what they did later came from something they themselves had, not something that they owe to Gospel. I know I personally hate it when someone writes off an entire category of music, so if any of you know some Gospel I should listen to, tell me about it. I'm ready to be converted, (you see what I did there) just name an artist, album or even a song that could help me connect the dots. And if any of you want to recommend Kirk Franklin, go fuck yourselves.

There is something great 2 be said about God's "anointing".
That is the only reasoning behind folks like: Kim Burrell-Wiley: A Houston, TX native who will smack up any jazz-inflected chick out here trying to "whoop-doop-de"..and she stated she never sat and studied "jazz" persay, it was just an inflection that she always knew 2 do.

A lot of Tonex's music is devoid of any of the qualities that make traditional gospel music what it is. He manages to do that and still be good. Not to mention he doesn't sugarcoat any aspect of his story. Most people get thrown off because of his image but I've never heard anyone complain about his music.

And with Tye Tribbett, you can tell that he also understands how to put gospel music together in a way that young, non-religious audiences can enjoy.

The albums I'd recommend for Tonex would be Oak Park 92105 and Out the Box. For Tye Tribbett, StandOut and Victory Live. And for Tonex, make sure you hear the Oak Park 92105 first and not 92106. 06 is a reissue that has a different tracklist. The original is very good on its own.

Tracks like,"Anthony", "Now","Sometimes","Tippy"(even though, I found myself giggling over the fact,it was song about his dog,but because the memories of the dog brought back memories of his childhood,made it real heavy. Oh, I know the audience. It's ignorant, older black folk who think Rap is the devil's music. That's why I think the Black Christian church lost mad niggas to Islam. When Rap came out Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton condemned that shit, but Farrakhan was the only one who was actually talking to the Hip-Hop community.

No, are you serious? It's an entire genre about God. How could that not stifle creativity? To be honest with you, I've felt closer to God after listening to secular music than any Gospel song I've heard thus far.

Actually, the audience is mostly just African American Christians really from all age groups. People from the different age groups have different opinions on hip hop music. However, you should be able to understand how the rap music presented by the media to the public can be looked down on by a group of people who believe the opposite of what is being promoted. The sad thing is that Jesse and Al don't represent black folks or the church propertly, so what they believe is almost a moot point. True, Muslim leaders embraced the rappers, but I don't think they embraced the drugs, sex, or violence that the songs often involved, which is what the church protests.

Anti-intellectual: what exactly do you mean by this?

Derivative: Considering that gospel has directly inspired and influenced most major genres in one way or another, I'm not sure how you can really justify this statement. If by derivative you mean that it's repetitive or redundant within itself as a genre of music, that's pretty weak too, considering the breadth and diversity of gospel music as a whole (and i'm including "white" aspects of gospel, such as southern white gospel), and its proven ability to bring together often disparate musical elements in a very cohesive and unique way.

Boring: lol, of course you're going to find it boring if you don't connect with it in some way... not as much a reflection the music itself as it is on what you yourself look for in music.

1) We all have roots, even if they're transitory or scattered.

2) Of course a musician is going to change over time, and in two of the three examples listed above part of that change comes from the shift from gospel to secular... which for someone who grew up within a gospel/spiritual culture is a very big shift. Both Cooke and Franklin were the son/daughter of a minister... being a pastor's son myself, I know that in that upbringing church permeates every aspect of your childhood. It's inescapable. Of course you carry that into your adult life as well, and it influences every future pursuit.

But that doesn't write off the influence and impact of their roots. Cooke and Franklin wouldn't have been the artists they were without their earlier years. "What they did later" wouldn't have been without their earlier years and involvement in church music.

3) Your statement is pretty much invalidated by the music of said artists. Each of those three maintained connections to their gospel background in the context of their music... you hear gospel in the voices and music of both Sam and Aretha, even in the most "secularized" work of both.

On a sidenote, I didn't know that Duke Ellington had explicit gospel roots... I haven't read any bios on him other than brief articles, but I've never seen that mentioned. I assumed he did to some extent considering his music (I hear portions of Black Brown & Beige and I think gospel). Can you give some details here?

Really though, if you're genuinely trying to understand gospel... keep in mind it's as much set into a context and a culture as anything else (and again, I'm thinking of gospel in the broadest way possible, as church music). Gospel music at its best is a reflection of the spontaneity and energy of the religious experience... I think that one of the reasons we have so many *singers* coming out of a gospel background is precisely because of that spontaneity, energy, that rawness that is integral (in one way or another) to a lot of church environments.

I recommend picking up stuff from some of the absolute greats... I *highly* recommend picking up anything live by Mahalia Jackson, and I recently bought the "Recorded in Europe..." album... it's *just her and a piano*, and it's just beautiful.

A final note: I found it interesting that you ended by taking a swipe at Kirk Franklin. At his worst he's absolutely derivative, but when he takes the time to tap more directly into a more direct gospel approach, his talent absolutely shines through... as a vocal and band arranger, he's *ridiculously* good, as evidenced by the first link below:
