It was a very good video at that. Real controversial. I think it ended with a black man being lynched. It came out during the period when Chuck was on Nightline at least once a week.

Yup. He was pretty much becoming a fixture. Ted Koppel was doing a series on race. It was during the time of Spike's "X", the Nation of Islam's alleged anti-Semitism, and Prof. Griff's alleged anti-Semitism. It was also during the time of P.E.'s "Burn Hollywood, Burn," and "By the Time I Get to Arizona." There was an ongoing debate at the time regarding the State's reluctance to celebrate the King holiday. Ted also seemed sincerely interested in the great deal of white kids who listened to P.E. Let's not forget Rodney King and the L.A. uprising (or riots, whichever term you prefer).

who has known first singles as "the love song" or "the club song" it is suprising that such a song (strong material) would a) get made b) be the lead single.

But this IS public enemy after all. Also, your surprise that this song would "get made" - are you familiar w/PE's work?

it can get made, but it would never get PE type play, if any. Even if it did, cats wouldn't try to hear it.

I still got that shit on tape and watch it every now and then. The Nat X joint is a classic, Jordan on the Stuart Smalley show, the commercials Jordan turned down (porno selections and tampons)

everything was better back then. you had Hartman, Jordan, Public Enemy, and Jesse Jackson. next episode has Jessica Simpson with her husband, Lloyd Banks, and Jimmy Fallon.

i just dl'ed the Pete Rock remix of "Shut Em Down" (sticking to PE this day) and that's dope. Mecca and the Soul Brother is the last album i listened too and that's dope. my CD player has nothing but pre-95 rap.

you can't tell me this idea of "the good ol' days", whether experienced by myself or not, is nothing more than just mere nostalgia.

music has changed.

like Warren Coolidge said, "Hip hop has a standard to live up to...and it currently is not living up to that standard."

i embrace the records of now, maybe it's too soon to really get a good perspective on them, but in quality and content (political or not), yeah, today isn't meeting the standards set (high) by yesterday.

http://snltranscripts.jt.org/91/91a.phtml

Air Date: Sept. 28, '91

Host: Michael Jordan

Musical Guest: Public Enemy

Special Guests: Jesse Jackson, Spike Lee

*Wayne's World

a recap of summer events - it was alright ...

*Michael Jordan's Monologue

MJ discusses endorsement deals he passed on, including a Summer Eve-like douche commercial & his official line of porno.

*Schmitt's Gay Beer - fake ad:

one of the funniest ad parodies i've seen - Farley & Sandler are 2 people who are housesitting a shithole of a house. They head into the backyard to encounter an amazingly gross pool. Farley turns on the valve to the pool, magically transforming the house & pool into a party. a bunch of model-type men emerge from the pool, hilarity ensues. in reruns and the "best of ad parodies" show, they never show the full version of this, possibly because it's Sandler & Farley frolicking with some bootleg Chippendales and there are a few bikini brief-clad crotch shots.

*The First Black Harlem Globetrotter:

just hilarious. from the famous Harlem Globetrotter pre-game circle (consisting of solid, fundamentally sound chest & bounce passes) to Phil Hartman's great 1920s team owner.

*The Super Fans:

blah.

*Public Enemy performs "Can't Truss It"

dope.

*Weekend Update with Dennis Miller

it was alright. Jesse Jackson's reading of "Green Eggs & Ham" in honor of the passing of Dr. Seuss was the highlight.

*Daily Affirmation

i like Al Franken but hated Daily Affirmation. the one with Jordan was decent, though. as their pulling away from the set, right before the commercial, you can see Jordan rocking the Hare Jordans (Air Jordan number whatever) at least 4 months before they'd be seen in public, on-court or for sale.

*Zoraida

if the name doesn't ring a bell, Zoraida was Ellen Cleghorne's black dominican/NBC page character. she tries to seduce Jordan, fails, and gets all huffy. mediocre.

*The Dark Side with Nat X

Chris Rock as Nat X, Spike Lee as a special guest, and Victoria Jackson as LaToya Jackson - nice.

*Tales From The Barbecue:

Grandpa (Tim MEadows) telling tall tales about his BBQ skills to Jordan, wife, and kids. Chris Rock as the Young Grandpa defeats a Nazi u-boat crew that overtook their battleship by BBQing on the deck during a storm. funny shit.

*Miles Davis Memoriam

the aforementioned moment of silence

*Public Enemy performs "Bring Tha Noize"

*Elevator Fans III

people try to sing the Nat'l Anthem to Jordan in hopes of getting on - blah (except for Dana Carvey's ridiculous run at the end of the Star Spangled Banner).

I think this was right after Jungle fever came out. And Nat (Chris rock) ask Spike. I loved the movie but couldn't you have gotten a sista to play the part of that white girl. I know Thelma from "good times" could use the work.

Classic

Shut 'em Down which also got substantial radio play, and By The Time I Get to Arizona which got MTV play, all with strong social and political content.

"I testified/my momma cried/black people died when the other man lied"

"I ain't drinkin' no forty/thinkin' time with a nine/til we get some land call me the trigger man"

PE brought a blunt political agenda to the mainstream which could not be done today.

it's like we're rewriting history here.

"Can't Truss It" was a single and it was popular w/certain facets of the hip-hop set, but it wasn't a huge pop hit or anything. PE was on the decline in terms of popularity at that point due to all the controversy that surrounded them. they were capsizing under the weight of it all.

and i mean, Rage Against the Machine had some hits not too long ago - let's not get too carried away w/the idea that songs w/overt anti-establishment political messages can't be hits anymore. the way i see it those sorts of songs have been around since at least the 60s and there are never too many at a time.

this was back when most Black radio outside of LA and NYC would only play hip-hop at night or on weekends. they weren't playing "Can't Truss It" very much at all, really.

(btw...i was in St. Louis when the song hit and i can't remember it being on radio. i knew the song b/c of the video)

and i still say if there was a rap group who had PE's 1991 stature who made a song like that today it'd be played.

exactly.

i knew this post was supposed to be somewhat thought provoking from the giddy up, but my man is right. cant truss it wasnt on nobody's regular rotation back then. throw ya gunz by onyx was a first single. believe me, they had set up singles back in the day, cuz Slam sure was a big crossover jam.

rap has changed a lot since back in '91. that's why those then/now posts are almost pointless to me.

not dissing your point, however...

*tries to think of last rap song with political message to get play on MTV*

was it Dead prez's "HipHop"? 2000.

one could say "Where is the Love?" but i hesitate to call that rap (popular because of the hook and who was singing the hook). indie rap/MTV2 crowd might have seen some stuff (El-P comes to mind), but otherwise all that's political is RATM and that's in the rock bin supported by the white rock stations.

despite the fact that PE might not have gone #1 on Billboard with "Can't Truss It", it did get play (radio rotation, according to atruehead, and MTV), was a lead single, and is different from most rap today (as it was then too, but maybe to a lesser extent).

shit done changed.

"What's Going On", 2001 for starters. that big song Jermaine Dupri put together in the wake of Sept 11 - it was originally about HIV but was changed after the bldgs blew up.

>despite the fact that PE might not have gone #1 on Billboard
>with "Can't Truss It", it did get play (radio rotation,
>according to atruehead, and MTV),

atruhead was in NYC, which as i said earlier was 1 of the few cities in which hip-hop was played on the radio regularly. NYC had WBLS and LA had KDAY - 2 all-rap radio stations. other Black stations wouldn't touch hip-hop except at nights and on weekends.

fuck you.

oh yeah, i forgot. Jermaine was the "brains" behind that? i remember Nas was on it. don't know if i can use the word "novelty", but i'll say "specialty." circumstances galore. that it was released after 9-11 made it play, and while Nas, Nelly, Eve, and Ja Rule were on it, you also have Fred Durst (not hiphop), Alicia Keys, Nelly Furtado, Xtina, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, and Bono (i thought he organized it).

but still that's one minor, asterisk-laden exception.

That video was the shiznit. And angering as hell. It's funny that no one mentioned why the black man was hung. His wife was having a baby and the baby came out white, so the brother attacked the slave master. Powerful shit.

The video for By The Time I Get To Arizona was dope too.

I was listening to Apocalypse '91 a few months ago and I was surprised at how dope it was all the way through. I always thought it was the weakest of their first four albums (especially because it followed Fear Of A Black Planet), but that album is dope. I think the controversy with Flav, Griff's comments and them kicking him out, and the remake of Bring The Noise w/ Anthrax as well as doing the first Lalapollooza tour caused a lot of heads to miss the greatness of this album. But it's good, along with the other albums done by The Bomb Squad at that time - Terminator X's solo joint and the Son Of Bazerk.

PE never did Lolla. Ice-T and Body Count was the first year. Ice Cube was the second.

In case you might've forgotten, Bono appeared in the "Louder Than A Bomb" video from the "Greatest Misses" remix album that came out right after "Apocolypse '91".

and people see this footage and be like "look at all those whites at the PE tour". In reality, it WAS U2's tour, who WAS the hottest band in the world at the time.

that's amazing that PE can't even get their videos played on mtv nowadays cuz of censorship when can't truss it and shut'em down were all over yo!mtv raps when they came out. they were even playing the wake up video on mtv raps, and they were diggin' into mister charley in that video.

would 'who me?' by kmd get play on mtv nowadays??
