I was on the phone with my man CLOWNING for an hour. Clowning that fake-ass Rose Royce(a group that madnt mattered since before they started putting their faces on the album covers) to Chico (obvious) to the bs r&b of the late 80's.

I loved that everybody had on the "eddie muphy in golden child/bobby brown in the girlfriend video" leather capskully thing. took me back

the intro had me dying. the line of ho..i mean dancers was funny
what was up with that couple looking crazy?

rose royce...this was what black bands had 2 succumb 2 by 1987..it was embarrassing 2 c those cats. the music was all synthesized but they had 2 be up there acting like there was a real horn section.

the lead singer....was that ny's momma? lol

chico...whoa...he was definitely someone's beyotch...talk 2 myself sounded like a ripoff of janet's what have you done...

now the reason this show got some xtra points from me
1)donna allen's 'serious'--i 4got all about that jam
2)rosie's hidden during the intro/her janet line routine
3)jesse's (she) i can't resist....that is my JAM!!!...what happened 2 songs with parentheisis?
4)the wop/cabbage patch/prep/reebok was in full effect on this ep

It was the fruitiest Dance on Earth.

That being said, alot of the dudes dancing on the show in that area were Wild Fruity looking so I guess that was just "the Thing"

Chico's gear was horrible and his dancing looked like the moves that were probably rejected by the Jacksons! Rosie was workin it down the soul train line with the dudes. I had to rewind it several times for my husband because he was Lovin It! (c) LB. I always wondered who was the chick with the really long hair! Y'all know who I'm talkin about! I remember seeing her on every frackin episode of Soul Train in the 80's.

This was a gem of an episode. I hated Rolls Royce's performances. But, it took me back. I wish I still had my leather skirts. I was only 5 or 6 but I knew they looked good!

Girl you so fine, kiss your black behind

Especially after he got out of jail.

This episode was @@@ for me.

Highlights:
* The Chick on the Riser during "Serious" with the lollipop.
* Jody Watley's video. (amazing how simple that video was, yet still quite breathtaking and timeless it still is... too bad Don C. pulled a BET and didn't show the car exploding).
* Rose Royce's "Lonely Road"
* Jesse Johnson's "She (I Can't Resist)"
* The shock and awe of the dancers singing "Respect Yourself" at the songs' fade.
* Rosie Perez's choreography during the line. Who knew in less than two years, she'd be acting and putting that whole Soul Train image to bed?
* I didn't know The Commodores did that song... For some reason, I do like it.

Another thing: Did anyone notice the strong Motown influence on this episode? Out of all of the episodes from this time, it seemed like Don was playing the living hell out of all of the Motown records. Maybe it was because Berry Gordy was about to go out of business? hmmm... makes you think...

BY THE WAY: QUEST, Louie did the Hi-Five with Leland.

Never throw toilet paper on a bear.

You know how you see something from way back in the past and you end up remembering simple subtle things about the instance/event/happening?

Hes saying that this is something that he remembers from this EP that was a big deal to him(remember he was young. we were all amazed by small things). Just something that really stood out and stuck in his mind.
I dont think he was suggesting that the "Clap" changed the world as we know it, just his(sorta!)

at least thats what i got from it

I remember that Donna Allen song... that album (Satisfied) was pretty good as well

I clearly remember the Bruce "Return of Bruno" Willis remake of Respect Yourself... but I didn't remember hearing Mavis all over the song (assuming that's her)

(btw, does anyone else remember the "Return of Bruno" HBO special, a segment of which featured Bruce-- er, "Bruno" and his band performing on a Soul Train-esque show called Bless My Soul? Back then I thought it was a shot at Soul Train but now I don't think so)

Wasn't a fan of the "dark" Commodores single... ditto the Bunny DeBarge single...

No comment on Chico's wardrobe, since all you fashion mavens have trashed his gear enough (though he did look like the gay inspiration for Captain Jack Sparrow)... I really dug the songs, though

No comment also on "Rose Royce"

This week's Soul Train Line was GREAT (hi, Ms. Perez)... (She) I Can't Resist is one of Jesse's best songs (coincidentally, I remember back in '87 when I tried to organize my own, non-televised-a-brother's-just-bored version of Soul Train, with my cousins and their friends as the Soul Train Dancers, and yours truly as Don/the DJ... this was the opening song of that particular "show")

Ultimately, though, this episode was just... there...

Sorry folks.

If your wondering why it's taken me so long to post a link, it's because i've been having some strange techinical problems that are only specific to the Soul Train episodes. After going through a series of edits, re-edits and quality issues, I am not able to provide a copy of episode 529, or any episodes for that matter until I can resolve the issue. I've notified meeshell and im pretty sure she wil come through with a full and clean version of episode 529 shortly.

again, my apologies.

40. "RIDDLE ME THIS...Soul Train Episode Questions..."
In response to Reply # 0

Okay, I just took a stroll over to the soultrain website and peeped all of the episode line-ups.

Questions...

1-In Episode 746 what songs did Dela Perform?

2-In Episode 773 what songs did the Boogiemonsters perform?

3-When the line up states that there was a "cameo" by Keenan Wayans for example, what exactly did he do in the episode? Ive never seen one with a "cameo". How did they work that into the show?

4-What criterior does Soul Train use to decide who to bring on the show? I ask because they really didnt discriminate...I mean, the Boogiemonsters were on the show!

5-When the Roots did the show, I remember that they peeved a few people (soultrain)because they performed to a live recording of the song they were performing.
-Am I remembering this correctly? Can someone fresh my memory?

-How do drummers on the show "lip sync" drumming without producing sound?

-Mute pads on the kit?

-Or do they actually have to pretend they are playing but not actually strike the drums?

-Do they just play along with the track?

6-Is there a specific reason all artist on the show are required to lip-sync?

Just wondering

Any answers would be appreciated

1-In Episode 746 what songs did Dela Perform?

* They did "Breakadawn" and and... and... dammit... I have to find that episode... I know it's somewhere in my room.

2-In Episode 773 what songs did the Boogiemonsters perform?

They only performed "Honeydips in Gotham"

3-When the line up states that there was a "cameo" by Keenan Wayans for example, what exactly did he do in the episode? Ive never seen one with a "cameo". How did they work that into the show?

* Did you see that 86 ep with Run DMC and Genobia Jeter a few weeks back..? if you did, then you also saw, following the scrambleboard segment, Dick Anthony Williams promoting the television he was on. That was a cameo on Soul Train. And since I remember that ep with Keenan Ivory Wayans, it was the same thing. He was promo'ing "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka" and also talking about a sketch comedy show he was shopping to networks featuring a predomitably black cast... hmmm.

Before 1985, Don C. used to incorporate a dance segment (as a 'dedication') to the cameo guest, and sometimes, that guest would actually dance with the dancers.

4-What criterior does Soul Train use to decide who to bring on the show? I ask because they really didnt discriminate...I mean, the Boogiemonsters were on the show!

* In the days when ST was a premier music show, if the song is hot and picked up by Soul Train, the artist more than likely will be on there. It's usually based on record label affiliations otherwise, as Soul Train is basically a glamourous promo machine. And there were, from what i have heard on numerous occasions, many many artists to choose from, but only a certain few were inclined to answer back.

but yeah... Record Label Affiliations.

5-When the Roots....

** Since I wasn't there... I'll let Ahmir answer that.

6-Is there a specific reason all artist on the show are required to lip-sync?

* It's more of a cheaper way to go about it amidst the tapings. Most artists had limited schedules or weren't 'getting paid enough' to go live. And I think Don C. didn't have the funds enough for everyone to go live all of the time, either.

hope all of that helped.

they weren't peeved....they didn't care about us...kept pushing us back til we were the last to perform. don was all "yall dont smile much huh?"

> -Am I remembering this correctly? Can someone fresh my

>

mute pads and air drum. some just say "fuck it" and drum. there is a great Steve Ferrone performance of "skin trade" and "meet el presidente" when Duran Duran came aboard in 1987. he was drumming on top of the track and enhanced it somewhat with an energy that actually made the dancers MORE hype.

i took a cue from The Beastie appearance in 1990 of "Shadrack" when they did a "live" version ("somebody say "Doooooooon Corn NEal Liiiious!!!"

>6-Is there a specific reason all artist on the show are

setting up live takes time. soundcheck. camera blocking. etc.

lyp synching gets you in and out QUICK.

See this leads to my feeling weird about the fact that a Dela or Boogiemonsters would be placed on the show. Unfortunately, I never saw either EP but what in the hell was the Boogimonster interview like? Im pretty sure Don Wasnt on some "Hey I really love Old Man Jacob's Well, how bout you come back and perform it for us a lil later?"

And if he didnt have much conversation for yall cats, i can only imagine that the Boogiemonster interview musta been worse than Chico's!

We learn something new everyday, HIM... just learn, homes.

I already had the original airing of this Vanity episode on DVD for a few years. It's one of the better eps of this time.

Yeah. There's not much Rosie on this ep, as ?uest mentioned, this was her last taping (and i believe she quit that Saturday... ST records all weekend).

Dare we mention, from most of the dancers' accounts, that this was the time Hip-Hop was about to breakthrough... and Don C.-- earlier reluctant to rap -- had no choice to showcase more.

Or the dancers weren't showing up.

This ep was weird to me via Vanity. It just seems odd for some reason... and I have yet to see the '84 ep with Vanity. According to my sources... It was a tad bit obscene?.. and was enough for mention in Right On! magazine... Maybe next time we get into the 80's, we'll see it?

Yeah. Rene was beating on that ass! It wasn't until they were disbanded when Angie was recruited for "the emancipation of the isleys" LP (A/k/a "Smooth Sailin'" circa '87) by Ron Isley (damn that Mr. Biggs shit), and from there... Angela was in Ron's harem.

Enjoy the ep, folks. @@@ 1/2.

rosie was so fine that cats would actually move towards her direction.

don didn't like full force flirting with her in between tapings.

and then when smokey performed "much too much" from one heartbeat he was dancing near her.

don frowned.

the last straw was keith sweat dancing with her on "don't stop the love" (i play that song in clubs and that is my "rosie call" for i know in 10 mins she'll beeline to the booth to beat me up for playing that song cause it triggers Don nightmares)---

so yeah...don made it unbearable for her to exist without being the center of attraction. and if she got too much attention....he chastised her.

but encouraged her to rock tight dressed and let her always go down the line first so she could "sell it"

this ep was perfect
no it wasnt because some holy grail act performed live (that's a given)
it was because this ep was what the train was all about:
the lighting-check
the dancers-check
rosie AND cheryl (loved the outfit)-DOUBLE CHECK (c)prince
the guests-check
the songs-check

and the list goes on

those 2 vanity songs (produced by jesse johnson) are my favorite by her
it was hard watching that in 2007 with my girl in the room

notice how rosie was hidden during most of the show?

the line (rocket 2 u) was off the hook

if that was her last time down.....that was the way 2 end it

go on girl

sure, a lot of his dopest tracks were Jesse-style retreads of "Jungle Love" (which, ITDO, is proof that he wrote the majority of that song, Prince ganked that from him)...but there was something about a Jesse song that worked. It's funny because The Doc can see Jesse singing a lot of them himself.

That joint with Morris? That was the best thing about that album, for real. The Doc doesn't know why Vanity was singing with her breath all in the songs on that joint, it worked for "Samuelle" but the other ones, The Doc was scrambling to understand what she sung.

"I'll Be Good" now has a darker, more sinister edge to it to me

Pardon me that sidebar

Anyway, not much else to say about this episode, except the music... just bummed me out. Just the cold, "metallic"-ness of it all, from EWF's song to The Way You Make Me Feel to M/A/A/R/S on

Just so cold to me

But then Vanity showed up, and the warmth returned, so to speak

Wow, was she fine or what? DAMN!

And Moe Dee's line where he says "Sucker MC's I make your girl say ow/Now she's jockin'... how ya like me now?" still cracks me up

And his "appeal to older black folks" strategy worked... my moms copped that tape when it came out (she was 35 at the time, which technically isn't old, but, you know what I mean)

The performances were definitely the highlight of the episode for me

Before the Moments were the Moments, they were the original Moments, three cats Fonce Mizell discovered at Morgan State University. The originals didn't do much, however (outside of recording an insanely expensive 45 on Hog Records - "Baby, I Want You" b/w "Pray For Me"), until Joe Robinson picked them up. He kept the name, but eventually fired all the members and replaced them with the group that most of us know as the Moments, who, as Quest said, went on to be Ray, Goodman and Brown.

i was kinda threw off with the order of the show this week
sylvia was up right after the intro
then the line with ewf's mighty mighty...i love that
sylvia? yeah she had that 74 sexy thang happening
even though that outfit look like something my aunt would wear in '07 lol
ray, goodm...i mean the moments were good
they had that smooth sexy sound down
i have 2 admit i like their polydor stuff better
lol @ the duet when they said "the new word is boogie"

highlight was herbie's chameleon and al's let's get married w/the breakdown included

what i like about the 70's eps would be what was going on in those songs. the handclaps, the yells, and that whistle!

loves it

As Revolution said, she looked like somebody's auntie up there, trying to mack somebody's unhappy husband at the family reunion

No Inkast-o

Her performances were a bit disturbing* yet strangely alluring as well she was very, uh cougar-esque

(*mainly because of the gear)

Big up to her for doing her thing behind the scenes though

No big up for fucking over artists

Allegedly © Jim Rome

(PTP Film Nerd moment) Yes! We have the return of the Soul Train Line with the cuts in between the dancers, as opposed to the cheesy dissolves... I love the cuts

Speaking of cuts (the musical kind)

Mighty Mighty is a forgotten EWF gem

I'd never heard of Ecstacy, Passion, and Pain up until now

Good stuff, might have to check em out

Sexy Mama = Now I look back and I can remember/Growin' up po waitin' fo Decemba/25th/when a gift/was all I wanted...
(Kam's "Still Got Love 4 Um")

LOL at Don adding extras on the song intros ("And it's the fantastic Al Green laying his soul on the line, saying this thang's so beautiful and so fine, he says Let's Get Married... TODAY")

That Sho Nuff Boogie song was pretty funny ("I spread on a woman like a magazine...")

Also, seeing the Line so early was interesting... Soul Train historians, was this a one-time thing because of Sylvia's 3 appearances or was this the norm for the circa 1974 shows?

Mainly because once I heard they were airing this episode, I *KNEW* they had to do "Sho-Nuff Boogie" which happens to be one of my favorite songs, EVAH!

But.

I was worried that it wasn't happening due to the fact that Sylvia performed "Sweet Stuff" (which sounded incredibly like "Sho-Nuff"), but it all made sense by the end of the episode when they let "Pillow Talk" get to the "Yes, Daddy.... Yes, Daddy" part of the song (Back when she was on there in '73, they stopped that jam right before that part... scared the censors would do some'n...)

I'm serious, "Sho-Nuff" was too short.

And the Line ended abruptly. but whoever put "THE BEST OF SOUL TRAIN" drop at that point, must've channeled some old radio cues... it hit the post. CAPTIVATING!

Herbie Hancock's "Chameleon." my highlighted jam!

Overall, it's dope to see the 70's episodes, because you do, in fact, see the unbridled unity of black america. Right there! in those tapes! I LOVE IT!

Never throw toilet paper on a bear.

I copped a box full of like 150 playboys from the '70s & '80s off craigslist for $10 with the intent of flipping them on ebay.

There's two issues with Vanity, at least one of which she's on the cover. (I'll have to check if the other one is a cover shot, or just a pictorial inside.) Before I sell the Vanity issues off, do any of you Prince loving mafuckers need them to complete some sort of collection all things purple? They're really great condition by the way.

First offer goes to ?uesto, but if he's like why the fuck do I need Vanity's playboy shoot, it's an open floor.

>i remember them doing "come go with me" on this ep (which was seen as a "retread" of "i'll take you there"??)

It took me a while to relize that they were not doing an "alternate version" of I'll take you there.

I though it was funny to see some of the guys *Swoon* over Mavis.

wow....

i really didn't didn't appreciate his status in the G & H second tier until a short while ago. i thought it was all about M & F, Vince Montana, and Dexter Wansel.

i think he also did a house joint called "Are You A Freak Like Me" back in 2001 or 2002.

do yall ever plan to do anything else with the G & H-related people?

is to open the vaults for anyone who wants to sample/redo shit.

cause man...

that sample money?

is GOOD money

sheeeeit even my checks for "who am i" (long story---bennie samples missy and redman, who sampled IH's "section" for this song....and get MASSIVE airplay in europe.---so for even getting an illlllllllllionth percent of a song like that a year is worth a low 5 figure check.

so imagine getting sampled on a song on an album that sells 10 million son.

rose was clearly getting a response and a rise (ha ha ha) out of viewers young and old.
but shit went way overboard come 88.

according to her:

don made her dress skimpy (promised her "first down the line"/"prime position"/"camera time")

but then would frown when male guests on the show would relentlessly flirt with her....especially in the rap era.

she told me nightmare stories of a miles jaye taping gone wrong
tales of don losing it when smokey robinson was talking to her more than him
but the straw that broke the camel's back was keith sweat asking her out during tapings and dancing with her more than him performing "dont stop the love" front and center.

don kicked her off the show after that taping.

because bobby brown was ALSO at that taping his label head lou silas got in rosie's ear and her first gig was born (brown's choreographer)

(i told this story before btw lol)

see now...^ THIS is stuff i can get nowhere else...

someone really needs to track down bunches of the famous and non-famous folk who have been Soul Train dancers over the years and get a behind the scenes 'tell-all' (or at least 'tell SOME') documentary made about what it was like to be a passenger on the Train...

...yeah maybe only a handful of us (including me) would care heheh...but man the stories i'm sure they could tell...

...and any chance to see Rosie is a good thing...

BTW: she's doing a play (i think on Broadway) now. Saw a tiny snippet in Entertainment Weekly saying she's the highlight of the show. heheh...guess she always was and always will be a highlight, no matter what show she's doing ...do yer thing Rosie!

On a few records he went by Bundino Siggalucci.

I got a story on how I met you @ Cue Records one weekend, met Peedi at the same place the following weekend, and the weekend after that I got a suprise call from Bunny (via my cousin).

Afterwards, I thought "I just met all of the dudes on the 'Long Time' song!"

That was God tryna tell me something, man. Seriously.

However, I gotta take points off for the repeated use of The O'Jays "Love of Cash Mon-ay" and Al Green's "Mama, Let's Get Married... Today" and The Redbone's "Come and Get Your Love" © Don

Also, special shouts-out to the lovely Theresa Randle-esque jawn in the yellow outfit

RE: the scrambleboard segment

Wasn't that future acting star (and Mekhi Phifer lookalike) Darnell Williams on the scrambleboard?

And for those wondering why there's an edit after they introduce themselves, wasn't it because Don would tell the contestants what they were getting for participating, stuff like a year's supply of Sprite and Johnson Hair Care Products?

(from netflix description)
For the first time in 40 years, the original members of the legendary funk act Kool & the Gang take the stage at New York City's Café Wha? -- the site of their first-ever gig as a fledgling band -- for a memorable concert of their all-time greatest hits. Tracks include "Get Down on It," "Cherish," "Celebration," "Too Hot," "Jungle Boogie" and "Ladies' Night," plus a documentary chronicling the events leading up to this historic evening of music.

@@@@ 1/2

The performer list sucked (but they weren't as bad as i thought they would be), but the playlist -- as i figured -- was dope as hell.

You can tell this was the time when Soul Train was coming into its own as a television show. I was actually excited watching today.

ok, here's what i do:

*i have my comcast cable connected to my hauppage tuner card and using media center-like software i record episode in .mpeg format (about 2.8 gig).
*then edit the epi to remove the commercials and crap in .mpeg format (about 1.6 gig).
*use recording software to convert to .wmv (becomes 500 - 600 mb).
*upload .wmv file to YSI paid (thank you!) hosting where we run thru about 40 gig of d/l bandwith a week...even tho only 4 people post there are a bunch that d/l
*post link for all to enjoy!

again sorry for the flub the last 2 weeks, my work should be quiet til spring and im only gone for turkey and christmas tree...

more talented than he leads on. dude held back big time. "Don't push it,Don't force It" was also a big time jam. James Ingram was tearing up the Bam Board on that one. Leon grooved with alot of folks, but he didn't always seem driven to showcase just how truly badd he was.

Leon pulled a Puffy back when and settled for that with some of his Grooves, but make no mistake about it, dude could Jam.

after last week's dismal ep, tbost has redeemed itself
yah i know it wasn't the first and it sho nuff wont be the last

this ep made it feel like a real st ep. all week long i was excited 2 c gcs, so as the ep came on i wanted 2 scream like the kids.

zelda(lol)....zelena had it going on. her backing singers, those fine young ladies (C) dc had me drooling.

larry graham and gcs back then had "swagger". bay area funk!!! i dont know if that was from that damn perm or those clothes but i used 2 think larry and gcs were oh so cool. apparently, some purple wunderkind thought so 2. chocolate......mmmmmmmmm........nothing like a woman playing the funk box. lol

leon....yeah maxx....was like puffy becuase either he liked 2 borrow grooves..mavis would have killed that song. of course we all know him from the 80 season (dont push it might b up there w/strokety stroke)

this ep personifies the early 70's st eps imho. the men were actually dancing like men. the women were getting down. the line was one of the best i've seen

the song selections were funky and outta sight. did the 3 degrees make it all the way through? yep!!! the 2nd song i know 2 make it. also, gotta love the sped up funky prez!!! midnight sky as the line!!!!

right on!!!!

FIVE STARS!
@@@@@

This episodes had all of the makings of a classic.

* The house party vibe. (Whistle included)

* The Lineup... GCS (was what i was waiting for all week)... Zulema... (who was one of my favorites, but like Mandre and Maxayn... nobody would believe me on how dope they were)... and the very elusive and slightly powerful Leon Haywood (who only made a handful of appearances in his career anyway).

* Funky President (I also noticed how it was sped up)... Rhyme Tyme People... Midnight Sky ... When Will I See You Again... The playlist was DOPE, bee!

* The emergence of Jody Watley. The appearance of Pat Davis (see her during the bridge of Funky Drummer... gwan dammit!)... Wanda Fuller and Eddie Cole, Sharon, the two Dianas... Tyrone... Ralph and Thelma doing the scrambleboard... CLASSIC!

* This episode was just great. Truly a classic, folks!

Bruh had some trouble on the scramble board.

Nice to see Jody looking all of 13 going down the Soul Train line along with the lovely and ever funky Pointer Sisters. This didn't represent my favorite BT era but it was nice to see them nonetheless.

GREAT episode.

was it me or did it seem like everyone was high on bt's peace pipe?

the gang was in sloooooow motion this week
even don...well xcept when the pointer sisters were up

i love the pointer sisters (the wilson sisters from car wash)!!!
?uest ur right, those joints with bonnie were crazy
everytime i hear them i think about car wash(you gotta believe is soooo funky), millie jackson (phuck u symphony/betach gotta chick on the side god dammit), and rick james' litle runaway(can i get in...pointer sisters). according to slick the sister's liked 2 smoke weed laced with coke. anita was my fav until this ep. damn bonnie!!!!

the militant midget's performance was killing me. i was waiting 4 james 2 jump up and clap like he did on good times
imho, the good times version was better!

bt was another one of those if it aint broke, don't fix it bands of the 70's. most of their songs sound like do it til u satisfied. the energy of peace pipe was different from a previous bost ep. like i said....the gang was high on that peace pip

and speaking of high....was that sly's high on u? damn st!!!

one more thing: lol @ the editing dept.did peeps FINALLY catch on 2 the isley's bullshit line? they got away with that 4 a loooooooong time.

So, I guess I'll be waiting for a link on here

reasons this was a good ep:
-jb's blatant rip of bowie's fame (hot)
-the breakdown of hot and the gang let's it loose...me thinks the gang loves a breakdown...lol
-any time i get 2 hear ruffin's walk away from love is ok with me
-bloodstone...these dudes used 2 rehearse in my cousin's basement...of cousrse i hear this story YEARS after
-was that dr.cornel west on the rhodes? lol
-lol @ big papa in bloodstone....their t-neck years werent bad either..i always thought d borrowed 'how does it feel' from them.
-and was i watching a minstrel show?
-the mighty dells....take note...this is where teddy got his influence...c we all learn from someone..lol
-we got 2 get r thing's one of my favorite mellow cuts
-very beautiful women on this ep!

damn...in my area the show started right in the middle of the Dells first track (I'm assuming they did three songs on this ep?)... I love the Dells. i have a nice 'REALLY' live (NOT lipsynched) mini set they did on a NY show 'SOUL' wayyyy back when where they just KILLED it. I'm gonna try to convert it and upload for folks at some point if i can..)

what i was able to catch of the Soul Train episode was cool though...

errr...how about that Bloodstone movie clip 'Train to Hollywood' or something?....um...WOW. may have to track that down to see if the WHOLE thing is as amazingly bad as those clips seemed...

SOUL TRAIN LINE SPOILER...>keep your eyes out for a Soul Train line snippet of a very young Jody & Jefferey too

they were our Sonny and Cher as well. Marilyn Mccoo was a early stylish soft cross over type of act for Whitney Houston and Vanessa Williams. Irony that Houston's "Saving all my love for you" was done first by Mccoo. I use to have a big time crush on McCoo as well. she was a dreamy thang.

Deniece Williams the forgotten resident of Gary,Indiana and i was still surprised how stevie didn't crack a hit on her when she was with wonderlove but once she got to Maurice's camp things opened up, though I think Thom Bell got the best out of her as a Artist over on CBS Records.

the ritche family- this is a FAR cry from the material paul j was producing for them on that 1980 episode (member the producer cat from france that brought us The Village People on an early ep of TBOST?)

this song is EVERYthing that was wrong with music.

but alas this is also some of my memories as a 6 year older.

(hey a kid born in 2001 has "superman" i have this--sue me)

but i will say that sometimes i just love a bad song.

this reminds me of winter nights on a friday when my sis and i would jiffypop popcorn and watch "kiss meets the phantom" or midnight special or rock concert and stay up late.

the "u+me" jam should be noted that the original female lead of Undisputed Truth Brenda Joyce (she was on the Average White Band episode when they first started TBOST) had been replaced by Taka Boom

co-sign for reals. It almost made me yearn for "Stars On 45." Almost.

(just catching up with this ep on TiVO, sorry for the lateness.)

All these disco-era eps can be rough. Especially like the one a week or two ago when the reactiopn to the new James Brown song was sort of muted and was followed by a lot of excitement for some serious disco tripe. TImes were tough.

Letta Mbulu was cool too, was great to hear a song (the second one) like that in a Soul Train setting. Both songs have the obvious Quincy Jones touches.

I haven't been watching "Soul Train" in the last few weeks, and after watching the show today, I realized again that one of the things missing in a lot of today's music is that sense of unity. You always had groups, and it had a family vibe to it. I think that's one of the reasons that Fishbore were/are so great, the fact that you had a bunch of friends getting funky, rocking, and skanking for a common cause. I know these days it's all about your crew and shit, and perhaps it's the same thing but transformed in a different way. We need more groups with 12 background singers and a string section, no out-of-the-box crap, I want to see a 4-piece band with 32 extras on stage. Kind of like a Popeye's family meal.

Now I'm hungry.

i was thinking bt express again? seriously???
well the ep started off on a high note 4 me
every ep there's a song or 2 that makes me yell out 'right on' or 'hell yeah'
the isley's pride did it!!
they just dont write positive and funky songs like that any more
sheeit even the isley 4got how 2 make songs like that

lol@:the couple doing their routine in front of the camera/peeps doing the 'greg nice'/enchantments lead singers shades (u know ur old school when........./dc's bt intro

jeff and jody were killing it in this ep

and props 2 letta and the st gang..that could not be pulled off in today's black culture. no way a sister from africa could get the attention of the 106 and park crowd...

...when u finally break it on down.........it's the pride that keeps us strong!!!

and I had a crush on Jeffrey Daniel too. I'd stand and try to do the robot and freeze pose like her until my eyes stung and watered. (I'm a female in case you got jokes queued up.)

Lord and when they formed a group and she had the white jumpsuit and boots I wanted the same outfit!

and a question: Was that the Shalimar song they played for the Soul Train line? I know they did a medley like that too when they first came out.

Any other Jody/Jeff fiends out there?

good ol tt and ll performed that damn ride-o-rocket
even as a 4 year old, i hated that damn song. lol
why was louis in the shadows and the other guitar player was up in front?
louis ranks in my top 5 bass players of all time
let's not even talk about his playing on grover's hydra
but he played a significant role in that good ol' q and mj sound that peeps are looking 4 but can't find
(he kills on filler cuts like get on the floor and girlfriend)
there was a where are they now showing that the bros dont even get along
they had a tape of george calling louis threatining 2 break his legs if he didnt want 2 perform as a bro johnson. lol

i thought the dells were gonna do some of that smooth chi mellow soul but nope

the dancers SUCKED this week. 2 much frigging posing 4 the camera
some were jsut standing around waiting for the camera 2 zoom through

ugh

I did notice a bit more hogging of the camera, but again, this is "Soul Train", if the camera is on, best to get a little shine while you're at it.

I was lucky to see The Brothers Johnson during the STOMP tour, with Rose Royce opening. I was still living in Honolulu, and my auntie wanted to take me because she was the disco queen, and she wanted to go a bit more grooving. I guess she wasn't able to get a man to go with her, so why not the nephew who knows his music? It was very cool, because while I didn't recognize a lot of Rose Royce's songs at the time, I did know "Love Don't Live Here Anymore" (because of the video that aired on public access) and "Car Wash"). What I thought was great about The Brothers Johnson is that they would use a film to be shown behind them, which was the WINNERS album cover come to life. It featured them getting ready on the track, and once the gun went off, they began to run in slow motion, before they reached the finish line, together. That was great, and the members of Rose Royce were on stage with the Brothers Johnson for most of the set. I was hopeful they would play "Get The Funk Outta My Face", and I believe they did (it's been 26 years so I'm not sure), but I know they played "I'll Be Good To You" and "Stomp", because "Stomp" got the entire place jumping. Being 10 or 11 years old and not being used to that at the time, I thought "this is more than the classroom dance".

I know, nothing to do with this week's show, but that's all I have. It was funny (and cool) to see Jeffrey Daniels and Jody Watley dance in the line, before Watley moved back and was replaced by a little girl.

That is one damn funky tune. Louis rips it up on that track. When ever I mention that song to Michael Jackson fans, they're like 'What song is that? I've never heard it before". They know Off The Wall, but don't even know that song. Very sad.

like alot of family acts in the business they couldn't stand one another and Quincy Jones would have to Break them up from fist fighting, but if you dared get between the both of them, they would whip on your ass.

Musically interestingly George got the early jump with plenty of studio gigs and a cold dis of Ringo Starr. He was in demand, but once thunder thumps louis Johnson came on board then the power shift truly changed. vocally they were decent. they needed a Q to guide them and they were talented and were hardcore fans of Sly and the Family Stone. they were truly Cali Cats.

i got all of there stuff and dug there style, but I also knew they were the kind of act that as a Band they were only as good as there Producer IMO. they were Hit and Miss Post Q,but the Session work kept it going.

but those other tracks scared me. me and My Homeboys back in the day would listen to a tape or a Record and if the title even looked suspect we would skip that track entirely. they had alot of skip tracks on Winners.

the real thing sounded like a Q Production that was the Irony. yeah when Leon Sylvers Produced on them I noticed how they needed that direction. but it wasn't ever the same without Q and company. Peace

George ain't even singing. What's up with that?

"In The Way" was a great song... "I Want You" was a highlight if only because of Jeff Porcaro clearly on the drums (and it had a Lionel Richie-esque vamp at the end).

(from Variety.com)

Tribune to lose Entertainment sector

Zell's buyout puts TV shows like 'Train' in limbo
By JOHN DEMPSEY
One of the first casualties of the Tribune Co. buyout by the Chicago billionaire Sam Zell is the Tribune Entertainment division, which will soon be shuttered.

Tribune Entertainment clears TV stations and sells advertising time for such syndicated TV series as "American Idol Rewind," "Soul Train" and "Ag Day." As the unit winds down, these shows will seek new distributors; early this year Tribune made a deal to shift Fremantle's syndicated firstrun series "Family Feud" from Tribune to Debmar-Mercury.

A Tribune Co. spokesman said Tribune Entertainment has gone out of the firstrun-production business, and the company has laid off three distribution executives based in Chicago.

"I'm disappointed but not surprised" by the shutdown, said Bill Carroll, VP and director of programming for Katz TV. He said Tribune had already "scaled back" its operation, a downsizing that continued with the relinquishing of "Feud."

Tribune was most visible in firstrun syndication from 2000-03 when it successfully produced and distributed such sci-fi hours as "Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda" and "Mutant X." The international marketplace for these shows kept Tribune Entertainment in profits. But when foreign broadcasters stopped buying the shows, Tribune couldn't continue to justify their production.

Never throw toilet paper on a bear.

I remember this ep because I wanted 2 c Peaches and Herb. My parents brought that 8-track and Ray, Goodman, and Brown's 8-track the same day. Damn ?uest, r tastes are similar. Linda Green w/her hot pants and beaded braids was a smoker!!!!! LOL @ ol' Herb w/his tender-roni. Did they use the 8-track because the sound was terrible?

BC was ok and I wished they would have done 'Changin' or 'Movin' but their performance was good. WTF was up w/that trumpet player??? Was that tick thing his shtick?

......but i can bust u out w/my super sperm!
lol
Ever since i heard that line, i always thought it was hilarious. It wasn't until BDP's 'Super Hoe' when i discovered the origin. Captain Sky. His appearance is up there with the Yellow Orchestra and the Fake A Delics. I wont give 2 much away. Peep the interview....wink...wink...

Ahh someone took my eye away from Cheryl this week. Y'all know my love 4 her runs deep but I will be damned if that redbone in the black hot pants (and then the turqoise top going down the line) had me turned on in that billy ray valentine's party kinda way. Nick who was that fiiiine mama?

brass construction were still stuck with the "Moving groove. I dug there sound, but I knew they would be short lived. Muller was branching out and moving on. they never had any real idenity though they could groove.

Peaches and Herb, Peaches I loved that chick and the braids. they were a Marlynn Mccoo/Billy Davis for the card chip and dip around the way house party crowd. reunited was the cut and while it was played a whole bunch it stayed classy.

Captain Sky was like a forerunner of sorts to what Kayne is attempting to do now. those chicago cats and there super hero get ups. dude had some groove there, but you could tell Don wasn't feeling him and wasn't gonna push him.

from wikipedia:

Production of first-run episodes was suspended at the conclusion of the 2005-06 season, the show's thirty-fifth. Since the 2006-07 season, the program has been airing 1970's and 1980's archived episodes under the title "The Best of Soul Train", in lieu of new installments. , as of January 5, 2008 Soul Train is expected to return back in production with new episodes in a revamped set and theme song/opening and new host Damon Wayans. The future of Soul Train was placed in further uncertainty with the announced closing of Tribune Entertainment's syndication division on December 18, 2007, leaving Don Cornelius Productions to seek a new distributor for the program. 229. "It was confirmed on SoulTrainFans"
In response to Reply # 226
Sat Dec-29-07 03:01 PM by nickfresh

that the "New Season of Soul Train" was a internet rumor.
and the guy who posted it, in short of a better term,
is a pathological liar when he's behind a keyboard...

Since Tribune threw out the Syndication division, Don Cornelius Productions is left to find another distributor.
things already look grim being that DCP ceased production on the weekly series in '06.

The real questions now are:
can Soul Train re-vamp enough for these kids these days to want to watch it?
or Was it smart that Don took the money and ran?

Never throw toilet paper on a bear.

thanks 4 confirming nick
i knew that if i put out the afro sheen signal, u'd come and give us the 411. lol

imho, i think st can be relevant 2 this generation. in order 4 that 2 happen, d would have 2 re-vamp the format. take cues from 106 and park and build from there. not saying he needs an audience but look at what makes that show so popular with the youth. well i know why (viacom. U still can't get the black kids from watching that show because that's where they can see those kinda performances.

then again, cut the bs and show the real classic st eps and u have a wider audience. blacks and white musical purists would love 2 c an hour worth of sly or jb live. but noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, these mofos @ dcp would rather bore me with billy davis and marilyn mcoo or a repeat of gloria gaynor (ugh). who in the fuck runs dcp? with the soul train awards losing strength, dc should close up shop and release season dvd's.

i aint say nothing when don tried the ol fakeout plaque for the brothers johnson (he actually had the "Right On Time!" gold record in his hand instead of the picture disc Blam! album.)

but i noticed something oddly familiar about this week's danceline.

and sure enough!

this is the SAME danceline from the Jackson's Destiny episode that preceded this ep by 2 eps in 1979.--however this was longer. ive never seen a danceline go so long that you see the first person who went down the line almost close the song.

solid show.

that Starlove song is HE LAAR REE OUS.

that disco would be around "for another 5 or 6 years," and that he had decided to "join the in-crowd" in order to stay relevant and pander to the kids

Yeah, I know we have the luxury of time to see that he was off, but it was still tragicomic

Also, RE: Cheryl Lynn, I had a thought when she talked about how she won on the Gong Show and Chuck Barris called her a few weeks later to tell her that she was going to be a big star. I can only imagine how that call went:

Cheryl (answering phone): Hello?

Chuck: Cheryl? Chuck.

Cheryl: Hi, Chuck. How are you?

Chuck: Great, darlin'. Listen.

*clap*

Chuck: Cheryl.

*clap*

Cheryl: Yes?

Chuck: Cheryl baby.

*clap*

Cheryl: Yes, Chuck. What is it?

Chuck: You're great.

*clap*

Chuck: Really great.

*clap*

Cheryl: Thank you.

Chuck: You're gonna be a star.

*clap*

Chuck: A big star.

*clap*

Chuck: A big big star.

*clap*

Cheryl: Uh, thank you, Chuck...

Chuck: I'm not kiddin'.

*clap*

Chuck: Or jokin'.

*clap*

Chuck: You're gonna be huge.

*clap*

Chuck: Major.

*clap*

Chuck: Big time.

*clap*

Cheryl: Oh, okay. Well, I have to run--

Chuck: Pick a label.

*clap*

Chuck: Any label.

*clap*

Chuck: They'll sign you.

*clap*

Chuck: To a deal.

*clap*

Chuck: A big deal.

*clap*

Chuck: A huge deal.

*clap*

Chuck: A massive deal.

*clap*

Chuck: They'd be dumb not to.

*clap*

Cheryl: That's great, Chuck, but I really have to--

Chuck: Talk to Herb.

*clap*

Chuck: Herb Alpert.

*clap*

Chuck: Jerry Moss.

*clap*

Chuck: Larkin Arnold.

*clap*

Chuck: Whoever.

*clap*

Chuck: They're gonna sign you.

*clap*

Chuck: And you're gonna be huge, doll.

Cheryl: ThanksChuckgottagobye.

*Cheryl hangs up*

First of all, thanks Meechelle for posting the soultrain
episodes during this run which looks like it just came to an
end.

i know i'm going to get raked through the coals, but here goes;
could you post episode 289 in the format you captured it in.

part of your quote:
"*i have my comcast cable connected to my hauppage tuner card and using media center-like software i record episode in .mpeg format (about 2.8 gig).
*then edit the epi to remove the commercials and crap in .mpeg format (about 1.6 gig)."

you could split the mpeg up and post it at your convenience until
completion?

once again thanks for the posts, i have in my collection about
20 of them.

Cheryl Lynn had a heck of a introduction into the world. she was that voice between Minnie Riperton and Deniece williams with a hint toward Donna summers. interesting thing about Got to Be real is that all white cats are playing on that cut. the labels followed that blue-print that got aretha franklin over and others. Lynn always would ad lib or acknowledge Got to Be real in some form or fashion.

still love Georgy Porgy and Starlove.

Joe Simon is alot like Solomon Burke and other R&B cats who were considered too Black and didn't get there due. very distinictive voice.

lol - one of the finest moments of the SAM label. another huge hit that they had was the "Wikka Rap" by The Evasions (the wacky rap with the yt guy acting like a journalist reporting on the 'part scene'). the dopest thing about The Wikka Rap is the beat though - fusing the beat for Thighs High and Funkin For Jamaica.

anyway, back to Let's Go Dancing. I always thought it was a nice mid tempo dance number. as i have gotten older and looked back at it it hasn't aged too well to me. now the song kinda sounds like a yt guy imitating Roy Ayers...

by the way I just watched that one with Chico...jesus whoever styled him obviously hated him! Was that a key he had as one of his earrings? Reason I ask is I remember that Janet was wearing a key from a hooped earring in her Control era and I'm curious if that was the period when they dated...... I am not ashamed to say that proudly rocked that key shit myself.....

give it up 2 this out o sight post
i never thought that it would be possible 2 conjure up so many childhood memories (now i know why i love asian women so much)by watching these eps.
just like it was back then, there was something 2 look 4ward 2 every week.
while the live eps were great, the ones that really stood out were the ones i wasn't expecting them to
(yellow magic orchestra anyone)
other eps that stood out in my mind:
angela bofil, vanity's eps,run-dmc,flash,stargard,ben e king (the gang was hyped on supernatural),the staples singers 80's ep, the minnie riperton, and a few others
sorry quest,no billy preston 4 me! lol
i truly appreciate the camaraderie that we had on this post
much love 2 nick,zoo,john,airbreed,voodoo,and bootygreen
and i have 2 give it up 2 the mighty might mighty mighty duo of quest and meechelle 4 keeping the train on the tracks
we actually managed 2 create a post in okp that was positive..lol

Hiya,
Hope your year is starting off good. I have been sniffing
around for shows I was on between late 75 till mid 78.
I saw a few links most were too old by the time I came aboard
(those I'm grateful for the two showing me on the line and
scramble board)
Really I don't know how to use this site well, I just got with
myspace right :-)
So if this topic concludes maybe someone will let me know the
next move.

Maaan it was so much fun seeing all these and letting my
GrandChildren see another portion of my life when their father
was their age and I was taking him to the tapings.
Blessings to all.
Peace
Keedah The O.G.
