"Black Lily in DC"

Let me set the scene first by listing the Playas in the house: Stylus (and his man Bush Head Ed), Grav508 (did I get the number right?), res1, kawright (oooo, too bad to hear you're engaged...brown skin lady, what cha doing?), sevencents, and NY playas NazDak (long know, no see, Playa!), and Dee Phunk. There's another brother whose screen name I'm forgetting, who was really getting it krunk.
Right off the top, lemme say Jaguar killed it. Particularly with the scatting part at the end of "the brother's side of the story" (correct title? hell naw). Not only is her voice is an instrument, but she has an ill theatrical presentation that makes her performance extra-live. (for those of you that wanted some DC hip-hop trivia, the brother who hollered back when Jaguar asked if the people in the back were still with her was Priest da Nomad, a very ill freestyler). And I was feeling the red (sequined?) bodysuit. Meow.
By the by, I was able to make out Jaguar's lyrics out the best of everyone. Great enunciation. 9 times out of 10 in a live show, I can't catch all the lyrics for songs I haven't heard prior to the show.
Now that I got my Jaguar jocking out of the way, let me also acknowledge Flo Brown, who KILLED it. Great energy and she "rides the beat like an equestrian" (Ras Kass). Scott Storch on the keys was banging something lovely during her set. No idea who the drummer was, but he was holding down fort, too. My favorite joints were the last two...."this is for my sons (suns) who refuse to shine". Sweet. The piece she opened with (something about a "four pound") had a bit too much cursing for me. To paraphrase OC, "every other bar was a cuss". when I heard the lyrics in her later songs, I knew she didn't have to rely on that (profanity is like a lyrical crutch to me). She represented though. Guess she added a few mu'fukkas in the first one so the "ig'nant niggas" would hear her (Lauryn....yo is it ill that I'm using footnotes or what? law skool has me messed up).
Anyway, Mercedes held it down for dolo for the jazzyfatnastees fam and did em proud. She hit some lovely notes.
Asia came out and blew it up. Also an ill note hitter.
3 7000 9 (right name?) also brought the ruckus. The Okayplayer fam up front turned it into a mosh pit.
Near the end of the Black Lily set the guitarist for the Lily band dove into the crowd. That was ill.
A krunk time was had by all. You know we get em cyssed, Joe.
PS: Princess is beautiful
PPS: Tank is very sweet, what a nice lady. Now I'm going to have to find that fellow who dissed you and put him in a headlock.
Peace,
Spirit
http://amphibians.iuma.com<;/a>
http://infiniteloop.iuma.com<;/a>
DC hip-hop is on the rise...
"High grade when I create beats/if I don't get signed/I'ma be the most dope bum that ever walked the streets" -
Aychell (HL, of Khemystery)
"If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and looks like a duck, it's probably a tool of the conspiracy" - unknown

Not much else to say besides what Spirit and Stylus said, but that was a dope show all around. I was surprised at Flo Brown's stage presence- she definitely ripped it, as did all the other ladies last night. Scratch blessed us too with some ILL beatboxing as always. Next time I'm gonna have to get a little more rowdy in the front (I was reppin in the back last night) with all my okayplayers. Shouts to all who came out last night, I think DC players represented...
res1
peace, okayplayers
"so what? you carry hot glocks and rocks, so what? that type of rap is #1 on the charts, so what? your video is on MTV, you still ain't an emcee to me"- Krumb Snatcha
"paranoia's a weapon, so stay calm..."-iriscience

after you been to a black lilly event with two dollar icehouse's flowin like water. but i made it. i woke up on the floor of my boys studio, with a stiff neck, and a pager wedged into my side. don't know how much sleep i got, cause i don't know when i finally went to sleep. oh well. it was definitely worth it. i agree that the dc players represented. i didn't make it to the meet and greet, but i think i must have been standin next to stylus if he was the one jag dissed. she was saying this high yellow joke shit, and my light ass was trying to move a little to the left so as not to catch her wrath. sorry man. yo, this was certainly the best show that flo has done in my opinion. She has gotten so much more comfortable up on the stage. i can feel what your sayin, spirit about the first song she did with the mf's in it. but the song does grab the ignan't ones and its just catchy and easy to quikly participate in. but i guess she does have to be careful about turnin people off as well. but listening to any verse, you'll see(like you said) that she is crushing 98 percent of the shit out there today. i'm the one who requested "this is for my sons". i love this fuckin song . flo, you be fakin on this one, you should drop this every time. just have them play a little slower for that one. speaking of the band, DAMN!. yo, i definitly want to rock with a band. they be blessin those beats something lovely!. who's next, OH, the beautiful Nou Ra. i got a chance to talk to her for a minute and that accent. whooo, it just kind of does it for me.(maybe it was my time spent in wales as a youth) I am not a big fan of the wig, but when it came off, its all over. plus she can down beers at my pace??! let me actually talk about her music. i had told a few people that i told to come about her and she represented lovely, lived up to her rock star image. but basically, that apoligize shit just gets me too cised(how the eff do you spell that shit anyways?). Jagaur had people open like a dc carry out . my peoples couldn't get enough , in fact my man just came in and told me how much he fucked with her. we will definitly be returning on the 18th. unfortunatly i had to be out after that,so i missed the lovely mercedes, and speacial guest scratch. did they have an open mic? did dc rep? It was nice to see that the nyc players made it down. yall might as well just go on tour with them.
Tour coordinator: damn, it looks like were gonna need another bus.
Motive records accountant: why?
Tour coordinator: well, we have to bring our front row.

In conclusion,I would like to take the time to thank the venue, for not minding a little smoke in the air, if you know what i mean.

smi
"this is for my sons who refuse to shine, for the mothers of this earth who don't use thier minds"- flo brown
"ooooooooohhhhhhhhhhh , do yall hear that beat?"- me , amazed by the sick ass beats by the band.
..Wise gets no love from the Speez. I was there too, Dangit!! Nah..it was mad people there and the vibe was so cool. Nou came up to me and Res-1 like we knew her for 20 years. The accent is BANGING! Keep MOROCKIN!!! I'll admit..if it ain't Hip-Hop, Reggae, or D&B..I don't listen. But 3 7000 9 made a new fan in me!
Jaguar..phew! I spoke to her after the show and I had to tell that I am now a believer! Flo Brown..curses and all...got my full attention. Her set...Hell! Everybody's set was too short for me.
Not since my brief stay in NY have I felt such a unity amongst such a diverse group of people. Big up to Gravity clowning me and Res for being WAY too early! Mercedes held it down too! Can't forget her as well.
Peace to you all.
Thunder (Kanamari-Kani)

i have to agree with you that the sound system wasn't exactly on point...it was hard to decipher some of the artists' lyrics (especially flo brown)...either which way, from what i could make out, she still had the crowd open...jaguar was a whole different story...i'm sure her back is already achin' because everybody has jumped on it and posted about how nice she is...well y'all players better tighten up 'cause i'm jumpin' on it too...i agree with spirit that her annunciation separated her from the crop...the girls that i came with felt that shit like she was iyanla vanzant or somebody...and i couldn't front 'cuz that story about the brother was on point...the band, oh my god, the band!...players, i don't know if you can even fathom what it sounds like to hear "electric relaxtion" live, but it can't be described in words...if i say it was hot, that actually means it was hotter...every syllable that came out of her mouth rode that beat to death...speaking of riding to death, it's time for me to get off jaguar's shit now, but y'all get the picture...big up to nazdak for stopping to introduce himself and a few other okayplayers...the few that i met showed luv, and that was peace...those that i didn't, hope to catch you on the 18th...being a rookie at black lily, i mainly played the bar on the dl and didn't know what to expect...now i know, so the 18th should be hot because i really wanted to check out the spoken word...peace playas!

The night began with the illness...it's raining, I have no umbrella, my bus is late, the Metro is broke *surprise, surprise* and my stalker left 8 messages on my machine *heeby-geebies*. So I convince myself that the night will get better once I see my okayfam...
I call up "my girls" who fake on me and decide not to go...eff 'em then, I'm rollin' solo.
Anyway, I grab a blueberry Eggo, throw off the suit, throw on my okayplayer T and some jeans *sigh of relief*, and sprint for the door...
Easy ride through DC...get to the Metro Cafe...Hmmm, why am I the only one wearing an okayplayer T...it's cool though, because I am greeted by emil and his boy, spirit, Stylus and Bush Head Ed(UMCP in the house!), Grav and sevencents. Let me just say Emil had on a naaaasty shirt on that I was gonna bust his little ass for, but it's cool...just watch your attire on the 18th, darlin' okay?
We said hellos, shook hands and ventured to Ben's for some grub. All was fine and good, I got clowned on by spirit (educate brotha, don't hat ), had a lemonade and we dipped to the club.
We met up with Res1 and Thunder outside...I guess I did first...they were all quiet, not tryin' to say hi, so I approached, hand extended *it pays to wear those OK tees, man*. Inside we sat/stood at the bar *why ya'll kept stealin' my chair!* and chilled...until this ooooolllldddd cat kept tryin' to get at me...I was lookin' to my girl Grav for support...got NONE...looked to emil's boy...stil none...so after 3 stories about the Beatles and why this cat cries at every Eric Clapton song, I had to politely dip *damn, lost my chair again*
Shortly after, I venture outside and say what's up to the NYC fam - Nazdak (bully), DeePhunk (groove buddy), Melanism (cutie w/ the sticker on his head) and GoodRev...shit, your name is just too long On the way back in I meet none other than Shawn Gee *gasp and swoon*, however, that is the last I saw of him.
Once the show starts...things just become a blur...Mercedes' sweet voice...Jaguar's lyrics as hot and fierce as her cat suit...Flo Brown killin' it and reppin' DC...Nou-Ra's antics and her wig...Nou-Ra cracking me up in the audience...Asia's soulful sound...the band CRANKIN' it...getting slammed around by Nazdak *I'm gonna flex on your ass next time*...getting DENIED stickers from Nazdak...getting pushed MORE by Nazdak...getting that NYC-is-better-than-DC vibe from Nazdak...I see a effed up pattern here...seeing Tank and Mercedes laughing at me for getting 1/2 pushed on stage during the 3 7000 9 set, BY Nazdak...groovin' w/DeePhunk, you go boy...showing fam my tattoo *what'd I do that for?*...trying to dance like the Vanilla sis at the end of the show *I was dope, Stylus!*...helping Scratch up to the stage...rubbing Melanism's head...IT WAS CRAAAAZZZYYY!
But I had a helluva time and I can't wait to meet up with all the fam that was there...even you Naz.. By the way...Stylus...what the hell is "lumpkin"...if I need to throw my shoe at you, it can't be good....Later ya'll.
Kristy
Gotta love my okay fam. -- me
Go eat a Manwich, bee-ach!! -- me
This old white guy was trying to hug everybody! And he was dead ass serious about it! when you said "no", he was like "COME ON, GIMME A HUG!", insisting on that shit!
Yo, he rolled up on me like "You're black, right?" I was like "Yeah". He was like "I'm white, right". and again I go "Yeah" wondering what the hell he's talking about. Then he busts out with "gimme a hug" and starts lurching towards me with his arms out. Yo, I straight ran away from money! He freaked me out, yo!
He rolled up on Res1 and was like "Gimme a hug". Res said "no thanks, i'm straight". Straight being slang for "I'm okay/not interested". This dude apparently took it to men "I'm straight" as in "I'm not gay", because he preceded to say "So?? Gimme a hug!". Yo, me and Wise started DYING laughing! That was the funniest shit ever. Money was basically saying "So what you're not gay, gimme a fucking hug!". That shit killed me...
Peace,
Spirit
http://amphibians.iuma.com<;/a>
http://infiniteloop.iuma.com<;/a>
DC hip-hop is on the rise...
I
>got clowned on by spirit (educate
>brotha, don't hat )
My bad. I am a recovering hip-hop purist. Which leads me to my next point (educating, not hating this time), in which i must point out...
Flo
>Brown killin' it and reppin' DC...
Flo Brown is from Brick City (Newark). She only went to school in DC (Howard University). and now I realize I have seen her before (I think). At the Lyricist Lounge show, they had a girl who they *claimed* repped DC, but later gave a shout out to "the Bricks" and "HU". Mad DC emcees in the audience were hella pissed, because those fake ass (YEAH I SAID IT...FAKE!!) Lyricist Lounge cats were given an opportunity to see the finest in DC area talent and fronted (instead putting on someone unknown in the scene who only went to school in DC).
Flo Brown (if that was her) was aight that night, but folks were vexed because no one from DC got to rep. Then that fool Ja-Sun or whatever his name is tried to challenge fools to battle, then backed down when someone rushed the stage!!! So much for adequate security to protect the sucka emcees...
Yo, Kawright, no hate on you, but I had to let that little rant off my chest. I don't like people to get the misconception that someone reps a city when they are invisible on that city's scene. Can anyone confirm if that was indeed Flo Brown at DC's Lyricist Lounge show?
Now, Fong Sai Yu, who the Roots allowed to perform with them *twice* when they performed in DC, truly reps DC underground. Big up to the Roots for giving Fong Sai (AKA Divine) the opportunity to shine. At the end of one show, Fong Sai was repping in a closing show cipher with Common, Buckshot, Black Thought, Malik B, and Dice Raw. What!!! I was like, "yo, that's my man up there!".
>NYC-is-better-than-DC vibe from Nazdak...
He did? Really? I'm glad I didn't see that. You know I gotta hold it down for DC. Only been here six years, but I been putting in work on the scene, nahmean? Gotta represent...
Peace,
Spirit
http://amphibians.iuma.com<;/a>
http://infiniteloop.iuma.com<;/a>
DC hip-hop is on the rise...

>You dont rep DC either cuz you
>just got there only a year
>before I did...
Okay, I could get in a huge battle over pride right here. Pride is a big part of emceeing, I could run down all the shows I've rocked down here, all the open mic spots I've hit. But there's no need for that. I think you're seriously muisunderstanding me, especially where you think I have beef with you. If I had beef with you, I would have made that abundantly clear. I never circle around issues. I have beef with those Lyricist Lounge cats, period. You just happened to be in the middle.
>If you claim to
>recognize that I clarified that i
>was from Jerz, then whats your
>fuckin point?!!
No. You misread what I wrote. In your rhyme, you gave a shout out to the bricks. You didn't clarify a thing. In fact, the folks I was standing near were confused, because you had been introduced as repping DC, then gave a shout out to Newark (now, if this was a show in Jersey, that might have made sense).
> This sounds like
>it's bigger than me Falona Brown,
>repping Dc or outside cats getting
>put on at DC shows...
No, it's not bigger than that. That's what it is. Actually, it is bigger in the sense that a lot of (NOT all) New Yorkers shit on every city outside their immediate area as far as hip-hop goes, but that's just my opinion...
>I dont
>know what your problem is with
>ME but I cant help you...
I don't know you. There is no way humanly possible that I could have a problem with you. All I know about you is that you're a dope emcee. That's it. Now, why you think I would give props to someone who I have a problem with perplexes me.
>YOU
>DONT KNOW ME, WHERE I'VE BEEN,
>WHAT SHOWS I'VE DONE....
That's the problem. No one knew you. And they said you rep DC. You say you hit DC in 94? And hella cats who have rocked here for YEARS don't know your face? Enlighten me. What shows have you rocked.
>I dont know
>you, (regardless of who the fuck
>I ask about you or what
>you've done)You talk all this shit
>about outsiders coming in to DC
>and repping DC, when you a
>outsider..shit is funny...FLO
That shit isn't funny at all. Because I've putting my all into this scene for years now: organizing shows, producing a cable access show to spotlight local talent, rocking stages. So, I'm WAY more than an outsider up in this piece.
Now, if you want to speak more on this, feel free to hit me on the e-mail. Because I have no idea why you could possibly think I have beef with you.
Like you said, we don't know each other.
Peace,
Spirit
http://amphibians.iuma.com<;/a>
http://infiniteloop.iuma.com<;/a>
DC hip-hop is on the rise...
"High grade when I create beats/if I don't get signed/I'ma be the most dope bum that ever walked the streets" -
Aychell (HL, of Khemystery)
"If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and looks like a duck, it's probably a tool of the conspiracy" - unknown

. . .just to correct you, I introduced Flo at the D.C. show, and though I don't even know why y this has become an issue, perhaps you feel you haven't received YOUR "just due," I said "the next lady I'm going to bring up is someone you all may be familiar with, since she just graduated from Howard University." I said nothing like she's representing D.C. And as far as her representing for here or there, as far as content, Flo is representing for women and women emcees everywhere. Perhaps if you spent more time listening to the lyrics and less time looking for injustice against local rappers you would realize this. Certainly it isn't anything that has to become an issue, but since I hosted the D.C. show and I know what I said, I can't let you use that for an example. Can we get past this now? Please?
Peace To You,
Mercedes Martinez
(Jazzyfatnastees)

Can you give me
>an example or two of what
>you're talking about?
Sure, I'll give a million examples. First up, the Lyricist Lounge album reps the underground, right? The only artist on there not from the Tri-State was Jurassic 5 and Ras Kass. The Top 20, Top 50, top whoever, emcees in almost any best emcee list I see are invariably 98% from New York (granted, they made it, but damn there a lot of dope emcees from all over now). I go in Fat Beats and can I find records from any non-NY artists? Fuck no. Only non-NY cat I saw was Jurassic 5.
I have a lot of friends in NYC. Don't get me wrong. I just really feel that some cats in NYC really try to monopolize, aren't really checking for anything outside of their city...I can't count the number of times where I've heard New York cats say "he's from (not a place in New York). He's dope considering that I don't hear a lot of dope people from (not a place in New York)." Now, I must clown you, Spirit. You're "beef" makes absolutely NO SENSE.
Okay, let me get this straight...you're NOT from DC. You said that. You've come to DC via New Orleans. You're upset that in shows in DC, folks be CLAIMING to rep the spot, when they don't. Okay, understood. I'm born and raised in DC (though I relocated to another city last year with the j-o-b), I can see how some DC MCs got beef with other acts/MCs getting on when local talent is abundant. Okay, I'm feelin that. YOU'RE NOT FROM DC, why the 'uck to you care???
Okay, you didn't get on...you're madd at the Lyricist Lounge, cause they put someone on who wasn't from DC. So, say if the Lounge put YOU on (cause, don't front, this sounds like what this is really about--you not getting on)...can I get online and then proceed to CLOWN you, cause YOU'RE NOT FROM DC? Remember, I'm born and raised...and my beef is, YOU GOT A LOTTA 'UCKIN NERVE! But it's funny how you got the same beef, BUT YOU'RE NOT FROM DC! Then, you have the audacity to bring all these anonymous people (and I noticed you named NO names, just "people you talked to that was in the audience") into the mix and rant about how they "didn't know who Flo Brown was". Okay, so that justifies everything...the people YOU talked to didn't know who she was, had never heard of her, so therefore, she must not "rep" DC. THEN you say in one of your posts that DC heads is feelin' her. What is it gonna be?
Now, Flo Brown wrote in one of her posts that she never claimed to rep DC, she repped The Bricks, and that she had love for DC, cause, she went to school there. SO WHAT'S THE PROBLEM? Okay, so then you said you had no problem with her, that you had a problem with the Lyricist Lounge, and that she is only "in the middle". Oh, that's nice, clown Flo Brown and put her in the middle of some ish that's supposed to be between you and the Lounge, cause, ish, it's easy, "I'm hotter than she is, her ish is aight" (and, don't front, the way your ego has played out in your posts, you know that's what you're thinking). So, you go off on Flo Brown for not CLARIFYING for the DC crowd that she is, in fact, from The Bricks and that the Lounge made a boo-boo. (And I'm still keeping in mind that YOU'RE NOT FROM DC) Okay, that makes a lot of sense. Get onstage and say to a mostly DC crowd, "NAW, YO, I AIN'T FROM DC, I REP THE BRICKS, 'UCK A DC, I'M BRICK CITY, YO". That would have gone over REAL well with the crowd: an HU head going outta her way to distance herself from DC. Yeah.
Okay, so in your latest post, you say some bull-ish about people from NY not giving outside cats their due. Okay, where in the context of your beef with Flo Brown does that statement fit? Flo Brown is not from NY...she's from The Bricks, remember? So what are you talking about?
You sound madd suspect. I'm not feelin or trustin your energy, cause it's NEGATIVE. You're gasping for air, yo. You're grasping for straws.
I'm feelin Flo Brown, she's positive and genuine...I heard that poem that nite at the DC Lily, and it just sent chills up my spine. She a female MC reppin and I'm liking that. It's fine if you don't like her, that's your biz, your opinion. But don't get online and proceed to chastise others about "reppin", cause you all hot and bothered by the fact that Flo Brown (a Brick City cat) did a show in DC (and I'm still keeping in mind that YOU'RE NOT FROM DC) and you weren't on that same stage. That poster wrote in the subject header somethin bout Flo Brown "reppin DC" during their review of the show...okay, they made a mistake, maybe they didn't know that Flo Brown was not from DC...OKAY? Can the person that wrote that post LIVE? Damn! Then you have the nerve to chastise and correct them, when, (guess what?), YOU'RE NOT FROM DC EITHER!
Like I wrote in my "Watch Out, Now" post, it ain't where ya from, it's where ya at. It's so obvious that you got beef with this young lady, even though you write otherwise. It's transparent, yo. You talk about all the shows you done (to obviously show folks that "I'm somebody, too"), the stages you rocked, puh-lease, Spirit. If you don't know where Flo Brown has been, what shows she's done, if you don't know her, then don't assume that just cause you ain't heard of her, she ain't did nothing. I heard of you, I been to a few shows, and you were, um, wack. So there goes that theory.
And then your subject header for your latest post, for me, was the real clincher...somethin bout "Pride...and War". You know what pride is? Knowing that your ish is tight, and doin' it every nite. Black Thought is PRIDE. Mos Def is PRIDE. Talib is PRIDE. Common is PRIDE. Obviously, you got NONE OF IT. Know why? Cause you ashamed of where you from, and got the nerve to be jockin' DC. This misogynist ish you spitting, all this bravado is nervous, Spirit, for real. Please come with the real ish, cause you will get played.
'Nita

J-A-Z-Z-Y-F-A-T-N-A-S-T-E-E-S, cop the album on October 26th

"You Stepped Up to get Crushed"...reminds me of...oh, nevermind...
NUH, don't confuse me. You don't know what I know or don't know bout this industry. Don't sleep. I have an opinion on this, and if you put your ish out on front street (as ignorant as it sounds), don't think folks are not gonna call you on it. I MUST CLOWN YOU--YOU'VE BEEN CLOWNED. You should cop Me'Shell's new joint, "Bitter".
Now, your frustration centered around this whole "reppin" issue. You said all along that Flo Brown does not rep DC. She doesn't, she reps Newark, NJ, and she never made claims to reppin DC. And IF SHE DID CLAIM TO REP DC, she's faulty (according to you), cause she put in "no work". WHO THE 'UCK ARE YOU??? Oh, lemme get this straight, you have put in work. Oh, okay, thanks for straightening things up. So, if I'm understanding your logic (and it's some dangerous logic, for real), it's OKAY and fine-and-dandy for cats like Guru to rep Brooklyn and Pac to rep the West (even though they from other spots), cause they put in work. Like you have. You been in this game for 18 plus years, and you CAN rep DC, via New Orleans. Flo Brown can't. Oh, okay.
Basically, you're see-thru...what you're really saying is how can someone who HASN'T put in the work (Flo Brown) come in and do a show, shout out DC AND rep Newark, when you were simply relegated to sitting with the other cats in the audience (with all your years of "building up DC" under your belt), watching the show. And been in DC LESS THAN 10 YEARS. You need to talk to the cats at the Lounge bout putting you on a show, immediately, cause you getting beside yourself. Oh, that's right, they fake, cause they didn't put you on. Okay, my bad.
So, it's not, as you'd like heads on this board to believe, about other MCs reppin spots they ain't from (cause they "put in work"). YOU DON'T LIKE FLO BROWN, plain and simple. And I just purchased a bottle of that Gucci scent, "Envy"...smells GOOD! (sorry, got off on a tangent). You got a problem with HER. Nuh, you AIN'T SLICK. I know the deal. You on some ole bull-ish, you frustrated and now you foolishly trying to cover your tracks.
You're falling apart, Spirit. I'm too smart for your games and bull-ish, you can't clown me. And don't get madd, regroup and come with a better explanation for Monday. It's interesting how now, you're backsliding, giving all types of explanations and disclaimers. Remember, I seen ya before, I know what you CAN'T do. You can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time. > You been in this game
>for 18 plus years, and you
>CAN rep DC, via New Orleans.
No, I haven't been in this 18 plus years. Well, I have been listening to hip-hop that long as a consumer, but I have only been rhyming since 91. And not really very serious about it until late 93.
> Flo Brown can't. Oh,
>okay.
>Basically, you're see-thru...what you're really saying is
>how can someone who HASN'T put
>in the work (Flo Brown) come
>in and do a show, shout
>out DC AND rep Newark, when
>you were simply relegated to sitting
>with the other cats in the
>audience (with all your years of
>"building up DC" under your belt),
>watching the show.
The flaw in your logic is you are assuming I am only concerned with myself. Look at the TYPE of work I have put in for DC. Organizing showcases, producing a show to spotlight DC artists...I'm doing this for OTHER people. I would have gotten a lot of joy from seeing Ghost up there rocking or Black Mongoose. Or Lioness. What I really wanted to see up there was someone who I had personally seen pay dues IN D.C. That's it. Now, maybe I was ignorant to what Flo had done in DC pre-98. I am more than willing to admit I am wrong when presented with evidence that I am wrong.
> And been in
>DC LESS THAN 10 YEARS.
Right. So, let me get you straight. You don't think Tupac was repping West Coast because he was born in New York? I don't see how you could reach that conclusion.
>You need to talk to the
>cats at the Lounge bout putting
>you on a show, immediately, cause
>you getting beside yourself.
That is a smaller part of a larger issue, which is getting attention for scenes like chicago, dc, houston, etc. There's always a bigger picture, I assure you.
> Oh,
>that's right, they fake, cause they
>didn't put you on.
Again, it wasn't about me. I don't even think they know I'm an emcee. I believe it was Danny Castro with whom I spoke. To my knowledge, he doesn't even know I rhyme. I was more concerned with cats like, say, Priest or Black Indian (or Bakin Soda) getting an opportunity to shine.
Okay,
>my bad.
>So, it's not, as you'd like heads
>on this board to believe, about
>other MCs reppin spots they ain't
>from (cause they "put in work").
> YOU DON'T LIKE FLO BROWN,
>plain and simple.
You're wrong, plain and simple. I gave my camera to bush Head Ed to film because I didn't feel that Flo was getting the love she deserved from the Okayplayer front row. I was more hyped for her than anybody. She's dope. That is NOT the issue. If they put Ras Kass on stage and said he repped DC, I'd have the same beef.
> And I
>just purchased a bottle of that
>Gucci scent, "Envy"...smells GOOD! Spirit: this is my last response to the can of worms YOU opened. Like I said, you put your ish out on front shit and now you can't deal with getting called out (which is why you have an excuse, an explanation and an answer for every post that exposes you for the snake that you are). At the end of one of the posts that was directed to ME ("Stepped Up to get Crushed"), you wrote (and I quote) "NO PEACE". That right there says it all...you're not about peace, you're not about love and you damn sure ain't about understading. Cause, see, you'd rather be understood than to understand where others are coming from. Cause you all wrapped up in your own existence...you're into the blame-game...it's always some other cat, never you. Typical MC bravado.
Although I think you're a fake and a fraud, and have expressed my opinions accordingly, I still wish ya peace. Cause trifing ass people are still people: they can learn from their mistakes, they can grow with experience. I hope you do, cause competition is STIFF, son. Real stiff.
Call me what ya want, I ain't backing down from my observations or the way cats like yourself talk outta both sides of your mouth. It's still peace. Unlike you, I believe that it is and will always be PEACE before REPPIN.
Peace,
'Nita
J-A-Z-Z-Y-F-A-T-N-A-S-T-E-E-S, cop the album on October 26th

It's analogous to how Tupac was repping Cali even though he was born and raised in NY. He was putting in so much work, to question whether he was repping Cali is silly...
> Remember, I'm born and
>raised...and my beef is, YOU GOT
>A LOTTA 'UCKIN NERVE! None of these people knew who Flo was, unless I am completing forgetting the conversation or misinterpreting it. If you like, i will do a straw poll of who had seen Flo rock in DC pre-98.
>into the mix and rant about
>how they "didn't know who Flo
>Brown was". Okay, so that
>justifies everything...the people YOU talked to
>didn't know who she was, had
>never heard of her, so therefore,
>she must not "rep" DC.
I already admitted my mistake in presuming that she did not rep and later noted that I should have asked her personally: do you feel you rep DC?
>THEN you say in one of
>your posts that DC heads is
>feelin' her.
Did I say that? I said i am feeling her. The DC heads at Black lily felt her. Prior to Lyricist lounge (98), I wasn't aware of her existence.
> What is it gonna
>be?
It's gonna be that pre-98, i didn't know who she was. Maybe she was ripping some spots I was unaware of.
>Now, Flo Brown wrote in one of
>her posts that she never claimed
>to rep DC, she repped The
>Bricks, and that she had love
>for DC, cause, she went to
>school there. SO WHAT'S THE
>PROBLEM?
The problem is they placed her on stage as a representative for DC. I'm not certain if she put in the work necessary to claim such representative status.
> Okay, so then you
>said you had no problem with
>her, that you had a problem
>with the Lyricist Lounge, and that
>she is only "in the middle".
> Oh, that's nice, clown Flo
>Brown
How did I clown her? Please provide a direct quote.
> and put her in the
>middle of some ish that's supposed
>to be between you and the
>Lounge, cause, ish, it's easy, "I'm
>hotter than she is, her ish
>is aight"
I never said that. i have consistently shown her proper respect throughout this thread. never once have I mentioned my own level of emceeing. You are reading something that was not written and you are mistaken.
> (and, don't front, the
>way your ego has played out
>in your posts, you know that's
>what you're thinking).
That's not what I was thinking. you are not a telepath. If you want to know what I am thinking, ASK ME. To do otherwise is foolhardy.
> So, you
>go off on Flo Brown
> for
>not CLARIFYING for the DC crowd
>that she is, in fact, from
>The Bricks and that the Lounge
>made a boo-boo.
Well, actually I stated (I did not "go off") that she never clarified whether she was DC or the brocks or both.
> (And I'm
>still keeping in mind that YOU'RE
>NOT FROM DC) Okay, that
>makes a lot of sense. Get
>onstage and say to a mostly
>DC crowd, "NAW, YO, I AIN'T
>FROM DC, I REP THE BRICKS,
>'UCK A DC, I'M BRICK CITY,
>YO".
No, grab the mic and say, "Actually, my man, I rep Brick City (or wherever she reps)". There is no need to disrespect when claiming where you rep. Be serious. When I first touched ground in DC, I made it a point to consistently rep New Orleans, because from 93-96, except for Mystikal, we had no real national representation (then along came the Master P explosion).
> That would have gone
>over REAL well with the crowd:
>an HU head going outta her
>way to distance herself from DC.
That crowd was by and large a college crowd anyway, in my opinion. It was also mostly white (although clearly white people also live in DC, my experience is that in underground hip-hop shows in the area such as Lyricist Lounge, a high white population indicates a combination of suburbanites and GW, American, and Georgetown students).
> Yeah.
>Okay, so in your latest post, you
>say some bull-ish about people from
>NY not giving outside cats their
>due. Okay, where in the
>context of your beef with Flo
>Brown does that statement fit?
You're assuming that everything has to fit in one context or always somehow relate to Flo brown. that is a fallacious assumption. Again, Flo was the individual chosen to rep DC. The Lyricist Lounge cats had been escorted around by Illcon Production reps regarding bringing Lyricist Lounge to DC as far back as late 97, if my memory serves. They even hit a spot I helped promote. These cats had plenty of time to find people (a) born and raised in DC or (b) established in the scene, regardless of origin. Am I assuming that Flo Brown is not established in the DC scene? Yeah, I am, but I'm more than willing to admit I'm wrong if I hear the contrary.
> Flo
>Brown is not from NY...she's from
>The Bricks, remember?
Where is the Lyricist Lounge based? Read what I wrote again with that in mind.
So what
>are you talking about?
>You sound madd suspect. I'm not
>feelin or trustin your energy, cause
>it's NEGATIVE.
It's hardly negative. Read what I wrote again with an open mind.
> You're gasping for
>air, yo. You're grasping for
>straws.
Again, not hardly. Regardless of what happens, DC will shine.
> I'm feelin Flo
>Brown, she's positive and genuine...I heard
>that poem that nite at the
>DC Lily, and it just sent
>chills up my spine. She
>a female MC reppin and I'm
>liking that.
I like the fact that she is a dope emcee. Her gender isn't a factor to me.
> It's fine if
>you don't like her, that's your
>biz, your opinion.
How the hell did you read that I did not like her? Now I know you're not reading what I'm writing because through the course of this thread I've probably called her dope about 7 times already.
> But don't
>get online and proceed to chastise
>others about "reppin", cause you all
>hot and bothered by the fact
>that Flo Brown (a Brick City
>cat) did a show in DC
>(and I'm still keeping in mind
>that YOU'RE NOT FROM DC)
And keeping in mind that I've been putting in crazy work for the DC scene. By the way, Anita, what exactly do you do in the DC scene?
> and
>you weren't on that same stage.
I'm not concerned with me being on the stage. I've been on plenty of stages. I would have liked someone like Ghost or Khemystery to have gotten that exposure though. Or even Infinite Loop or 3LG, who have put in mad work.
> That poster wrote in the
>subject header somethin bout Flo Brown
>"reppin DC" during their review of
>the show...okay, they made a mistake,
>maybe they didn't know that Flo
>Brown was not from DC...OKAY?
>Can the person that wrote that
>post LIVE? Damn!
I was clarifying that point. That person's name was Kawright. You didn't take the time to read her name? I'm hardly attacking her. I think you need to carefully read what I write and carefully read in general.
> Then
>you have the nerve to chastise
>and correct them, when, (guess what?),
>YOU'RE NOT FROM DC EITHER!
I am told KRS-ONE was born in Jersey. Does this mean he has not been repping South Bronx to the fullest for years now? Either havok or Prodigy is from Long Island. You saying both of those cats don't rep Queensbridge to the fullest? Hip-hop history dilutes your argument...
>Like I wrote in my "Watch Out,
>Now" post, it ain't where ya
>from, it's where ya at.
Well, Rakim was the first to popularize that phrase, not you. And it's actually where your heart is. If Flo Brown's heart is in repping DC and she's putting the work in, then she reps DC.
>It's so obvious that you got
>beef with this young lady, even
>though you write otherwise.
I don't know her. This is no way that I can have beef with her. The only way you know what I'm thinking is by what I write.
> It's
>transparent, yo. You talk about
>all the shows you done (to
>obviously show folks that "I'm somebody,
>too"), the stages you rocked, puh-lease,
>Spirit.
Puh-leese, Anita. All I'm showing is I put in the pre-requisite amount of work to say that I rep DC, period. I have no vested interest in impressing you or anyone else on this board.
If you don't know
>where Flo Brown has been, what
>shows she's done, if you don't
>know her, then don't assume that
>just cause you ain't heard of
>her, she ain't did nothing.
Actually, it was a rebuttable presumption. she could have rebutted it by saying "I rocked x spot or y spot".
>I heard of you, I been
>to a few shows, and you
>were, um, wack.
Sure. What shows were those? And I don't particularly care for your one solo opinion when lots of people have stepped to me following shows and said I was....um...dope. And cats keep coming back to see me perform and step to me to request I perform so...um...fuck you.
So there
>goes that theory.
>And then your subject header for your
>latest post, for me, was the
>real clincher...somethin bout "Pride...and War".
>You know what pride is?
>Knowing that your ish is tight,
>and doin' it every nite.
>Black Thought is PRIDE.
No, you don't know what pride is. Pride is being so focused on the self you lose the bigger picture. Black thought is quite humble, actually. I think you're confusing pride with confidence.
>Obviously, you got NONE OF IT.
> Know why? Cause you
>ashamed of where you from, and
>got the nerve to be jockin'
>DC.
I never deny that I was raised in new Orleans and often mention it in rhyme. As I type this I'm wearing a sweatshirt that has "New Orleans" emblazoned across the front. And how would you know I was from New Orleans if I hadn't of said it countless times on the boards? You don't know me. Next show you see me at, step to me. I'm not "jocking DC", I'm in the process of building DC. And immeasurable cats have thanked me for the work I put in to promote this scene.
> This misogynist ish you
>spitting,
Misogyny????????? Now, you are truly, really bugging. Nothing I wrote could in any way be construed as misogyny.
> all this bravado is nervous,
>Spirit, for real. Please come
>with the real ish, cause you
>will get played.
Put simply, anita, if you are an emcee, we can battle. If you a civilian, we can debate. either way, you'll lose, guaranteed.
Peace,
Spirit
http://amphibians.iuma.com<;/a>
http://infiniteloop.iuma.com<;/a>
DC hip-hop is on the rise...

After reading all the hub-bub that my comment about Flo Brown reppin' DC has generated...I must say this: IT DOESN'T MATTER! So what. Mercedes said that Flo was representing HOWARD (which is true) Howard is in DC...so when I said that she was reppin' DC...I was referring to Howard...but all that is beside the point anyway. DC or NY or Louisiana or Bum-f*ck, Kentucky, who cares! Eff it, man it doesn't matter where you're from it's where you're at. If sis can flow, she can flow. Let's just cool all this. It really isn't that big a deal. I want it to be all love again next Monday...no static. Please?
Kristy
Gotta love my okay fam. -- me
Go eat a Manwich, bee-ach!! -- me
**disclaimer: the following words are written out of love**
>After reading all the hub-bub that my
>comment about Flo Brown reppin' DC
>has generated...I must say this: IT
>DOESN'T MATTER! So what. Mercedes
>said that Flo was representing HOWARD
>(which is true)
Yo, I was referring to the Lyricist Lounge show, where Flo was billed as repping DC. Everyone else seems to have misread what I wrote, including Mercedes (much love to you, sis, BUT RE-READ WHAT I WROTE, I was referring to Lyricist Lounge when the comment about Flo repping DC was made).
> Howard is in
>DC...so when I said that she
>was reppin' DC...I was referring to
>Howard...
That's cool and all and while I was rhyming here from 93-95, I thought repping Howard was repping DC, but it's really not. The problem is, there are a lot of people in this city who are trying to shine. I'm not born and raised here, but this is where I plan to stay. Like I said earlier, when you're under 18 (unless you run away from home) generally you live wherever your parents move. I love New Orleans. I don't really have nay plans to return. The type of hip-hop I do is way out of sync with 90% of the cats rhyming down there. Talk about an uphill battle...
but all that is beside the
>point anyway. DC or NY
>or Louisiana or Bum-f*ck, Kentucky, who
>cares! Eff it, man it doesn't
>matter where you're from it's where
>you're at.
I've heard this expressed a million times, but when it comes time to become cultural producers instead of consumers, the issue of geography is very real. DC radio is not supporting DC area talent. Major labels, based by and large in NYC, aren't checking (they're barely checking for 90% of the rapers in NYC). Hip-hop media, also based largely in NYC, aren't checking. The politics in this shit is very real.
I do a lot of what I do out of love. Yeah, I'm pretty passionate. Yeah, I'm seeing cats who I feel are immensely talented struggle at menial labor type jobs or whatever...we work had for this, so yeah, there's a lot of pride involved.
I'm in law school producing a cable access show to spotlight folks and writing press releases for fools. I'm getting 3 hours worth of sleep a night. Hustling at this. So, yeah, I take the idea of who's considered "repping DC" and who gets their chance to shine on stage very seriously. Probably more seriously than 99.9% of the people, who could care less.
Saying "it's not where you're from..." to me sounds just like saying "it doesn't matter what color you are". Black people still face substantial discrimination, so it still does mater what color you are. In hip-hop, a lot of scenes still face substantial discrimination (I know, that analogy sounds wild, but it's the best way I could put it). If Master P had not have gotten distribution through Priority, he would not be in the Source today. (1) he wouldn't have been able to sell as many records without the distribution and (2) without being affiliated with a major, you can't get in these magazines in any real way and you'll be hard pressed to get a fair review, if you get a review at all.
A lot of people are misunderstanding me. You don't understand what I'm saying? e-mail me. But don't tell me I'm crazy, as if the idea that cities all over the U.S. have scenes, but only heads in NY or Cali (to a lesser extent) underground get any light makes sense for any reason other than the fact that media outlets are clustered there and _people are fronting_. This has nothing to do with Black Lily.
> If sis can flow,
>she can flow.
That has never been an issue. I gave her the respect she deserves from the beginning. She's dope.
>Let's just cool
>all this. It really isn't that
>big a deal. I want
>it to be all love again
>next Monday...no static. Please?
No static? How can there be static? again, people are misunderstanding me. EVERYTHING I SAY IS OUT OF LOVE (except for my clowning the Lyricist Lounge cats, but even that is out of love, love for my folks on this scene).
I don't have static with anyone (except the Lyricist Lounge cats). I don't see how anyone reading my posts could think I have static with anyone other than the Lyricist Lounge cats. When I say READING, I mean reading rthe words on the page, not looking for some super-secret meaning. If I say "fuck Lyricist Lounge" there is no subliminal message. I'm simply saying fuck Lyricist Lounge. Now, Flo, again the only reason why you're really in it is because you happened to be on stage, as the person they chose to "rep" DC. What's funny is we wasted all this precious time, but I should have started it with asking simply: do you feel you rep DC?
That was my mistake. I started from the wrong angle. I started from a presumption. Then, Flo somehow presumed I had a problem with her (I don't), now Kawright thinks there will be anything less than love in the room on the 18th. It's all love.
Peace,
Spirit
http://amphibians.iuma.com<;/a>
http://infiniteloop.iuma.com<;/a>
DC hip-hop is on the rise...

I guess that the whole where you are reppin' from thing is kinda foreign to me as I am a displaced chic...I claim to be from no where, as I have moved around, city to city, country to country all my life. The passion for one's home or home of choice is interesting if not odd to me.
In regards to my feelin' that there will be static on Monday...I just mean less than loving feelings. If you and Anita should meet up...well, hell, it's pretty clear to me that ya'll don't like each other or rather she doesn't seem to like you. I don't mean there will be an altercation or anything like that...just ill vibes, nah'mean.
But whatever ya'll, I'm sure that the good-okay vibes will prevail at Black Lily...Peace to all parties involved.
Kristy
Gotta love my okay fam. -- me
Go eat a Manwich, bee-ach!! -- me
First let me state a few things about myself... I am not a hip-hop head. I make no claims of knowing the 'scene'. I do not have a complete knowledge of the inner working of the hip-hop psyche... However, I love certain hip-hop artists and I have this to say about this whole debate...
Firstly, Flo Brown is absolutley amazing.
Secondly, I understand the loyalty of repping where you feel to come from. Loyalty is always a positive thing. However, I also think that it matters not where you reside or rep, surely the quality of your lyrics, flow etc. are the point. If I felt myself to represent a certain city, oh lets say London, and Flo was brought on as a representative of London, I would not be bitching. The girl is brilliant, so let her shine.
Thirdly, so what that no-one had heard of her. Can only known acts get respect and praise? I've said it before and I'll say it again - The woman is a lyrical genius, she will rise regardless of peoples opinions.
Spirit, I think that your issue of whether or not she reps for DC is a hindrance to your appreciation of her, or anyone else for that matter. Listen not to a persons address, listen to their wisdom. Wisdom, incidentally, is something of which Flo Brown has plenty.
Peace, Love and green things that grow,
Tank
"You're a diamond, well not really, you're more like a lump of coal waiting to be a diamond. But you will be, I have faith in you." Sister Mary Joseph aka Nou-Ra's Irish Alter-Ego
"Poetry and Hums aren't things which you get, they're things which get you. All you can do is go where they can find you." Winnie the Pooh
