well... we HAVE seen a lot of people attempt to emulate Al Green and perhaps come even close to it.

but how many people have been able to write on Lionel's level and score hits in R&B, pop and country?

a Better overall songwriter and put on a tight show. MJ is a Better all around act, but don't act like Lionel Richie couldn't hang. shows what you know which ain't much. Lionel was the guy you wanted to be because there was only one Michael.

of what MJ did in the same era.

Better songwriter, sure, in the sense he was more varied, prolific and had more skill playing instruments.

Show didn't compare.

Overall product wasn't even a comparison.

It's a shame you even gotta bring Michael Jackson into this, at least keep it to someone you hate on like Prince.......another cat Lionel ain't seeing.

R&B needed some Blackness added to it..

then you big up the Whitest R&B cat ever over the Blackest one..

you make no sense man...

and you honestly have poore taste in music if you put Lionel Richie over Al Green..

and at least be honest enough to say that Al Green is now in your scope because he has a great album coming out with Quest and them (no Mr. Big type clownin...just straight soul music)

we see you maxx..

Lionel Richie is the Only Cat who can hang with Michael Jackson who came from a Group enviroment and became even bigger. if you knew anything about songwriting and tapping into versatility then you'd see the light. Lionel Richie Live right now taps the grease out of Al Green's ass still by the way.

you some corny Ass Bowfinger Glasses Wearing, Raj Thomas sweater wearing Turkey who couldn't tell a Real Artist if it was thrown right in front of you.

Lionel Richie done did everything you'd ask of a SuperStar and still does.

Al Green had to go away but Lionel RIchie never ran scurred. go back to your Cave Blackula. fool your posts and your style is as Ashy and played out as a RUdy Ray Moore Blow out Fro and Cadddy. get some 2008 Glad in your ride and up-date your shit. you still at work telling your boss that Speak and spell technilogy was the Bomb. you at your crib trying to play your 8 track machine inside of your Tivo. you just a Mushroom head bacon and sour dough Pickle Jar Head turkey.

In the ride, at home with your girl, in a bar with some folks, at a barbeque, on some headphones, etc........you're gonna pop on "Say You, Say Me" or "Dancin On The Ceiling" over "Call Me" or "Love and Happiness"?

Sounds like more contrarian I'm-proving-I'm-not-a-musical-elitist-OKP shit, sorta like Dam calling "Baby One More Time" the greatest song of the past ten years in that post a few months back......but to each their own, if you really can say you bump Lionel's stuff on the regular.

Most of Lionel's post-Commodores work is well-crafted white-bread/saccharine shit and I'll take any Al Green pre-conversion 70s record over a compilation of Lionel's best 15 solo tracks without hesitation.

depends on the situation.

there are some times my groove calls for "Hello" and "Penny Lover" rather than "Let's Get Married" and "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart."

"Baby One More Time" really IS a great song, and if you can't admit that... well, you probably ARE a kneejerk elitist.

The post said 'Greatest Song Of The Past Ten Years' and if you can co-sign that, you probably are trying too hard to prove you're not an kneejerk elitist.

On the other hand, I can give the Swiss Factory that cranked it out credit for being a well-crafted song while not really needing to play it on my own personal time.

Except the falsetto part.

Al is my dude, but I think these fools are forgetting about the Commodores too.

Lionel is global. He got that universal appeal that nobody else really has. He managed to achieve crossover success and still kept it black without having to assimilate.

Even at his most corniest (or, what some may perceive as his "whitest"... eg. I'm gonna say "Endless Love"), dude still brought mad soul.

In response to Reply # 40

his first album especially still had that "Commodores" sound throughout, and while Can't Slow Down was more pop-oriented, "Love Will Find A Way" was still to be found.

The Doc thinks it wasn't until after the run of that second solo album that Lionel was far gone. But even then "Love Will Conquer All" was there as a life saver.

The Doc will say, Lionel's only weakness is retreading his old songs and repackaging them...

("Still" ---> "Truly"; "Easy" ---> "My Love"; "Love Will Find A Way" ---> "Love Will Conquer All" and so forth.)

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

I personally can't agree though except for the songwriting-part. Stuff like Lionel Ritchie was actually the type of music that kept me away from R&B/soul (did he really play that on records like "All night Long" and "Dancing on the Ceiling"?) back as a kid and I still can't enjoy it.

I like some Commodores-songs though and he *is* a great songwriter, I just don't care about that outside of a performance context...

Lionel Richie is underrated as hell. I always felt like he never got the credit he fully deserved. He's gone from Soul to R&B, to Country and back. That nigga is truly talented and doesn't miss a step with his. His last album and live shows are proof that he's STILL that nigga!

In response to Reply # 0

The Doc doesn't listen to Lionel and Al in the same sort of mindframe...even though they make similar music.

but he will say a few things about Lionel Richie.

For a guy that was a reluctant frontman (at first), he built a pretty good career.

But for those who hear the name Lionel and think the following: the "Hello" video, "Dancing on the Ceiling", getting the Tenkaichi Budokai treatment from his wife after being caught with Euro-noosebait, and so on...

before all that PB&J, Lionel was quietly one of the leading Black singers/songwriters out there.

His rep was built with the Commodores, and some of the ish you'll hear on the albums in which he participated will surprise the skeptical.

"Fancy Dancer"
"Slippery When Wet"
"Just To Be Close To You"
"Easy" (the song that got the Commodores a Rolling Stone write-up)
"You're Special"
"Jesus Is Love"
"Are You Happy" (one of his first lead vocals)
"This Is Your Life"
"Heroes"
"Come Inside"
"Wonderland"

not to mention a host of great songs often written in tandem with bandmate Thomas McClary (which is how he got the country out of his songwriting)

in a way, he sort of opened the door for cats like Prince to broaden their horizon -- speaking of which, he was third only to MJ and Prince as the leading Black artist of the 1980s.

Lionel may have gotten over on some PB&J but he paid his dues

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

^^^^true statement....No one can dispute his songwriting impact..Dude was a music icon...

I just think people aon this thread are just laughing at the irony (and complete comical hypocrite nature...) of Maxx, who always shits on folks like Prince for not being black enough and not giving the 'hood what they love (see R. Kelly), and yet Max worships at the alter of Lionel Richie (again, a great songwriter), the same man that took selling-out (on the musical tip) to new levels...It's just funny as all hell...

Nah...

When you go from the soulful groove of say "Love Will Find A Way" to "Dancing On The Ceiling," that's questionable, even in the '80s age of the Cross Over Negro...Hell, even "Endless Love" which was a bit cheesy, still had some soul in it...However, by 86, Lionel was making Pat Boone records...

Again, anyone trying to take away dude's overall songwriting pedigree is on some bullshit...But to say that Lionel went over the cliff in his pursuit to cross over is not a stretch...It's calling a spade a spade...

>Better Songwriter

Yes, Richie was a songwriting machine, so he gets the nod...

Even if most of his '80s shit was some of the corniest, whitebread shit of that era...I give him props for his Commodores shit (the nigga wrote "Zoom") and Can't Slow Down had some great stuff on it (amongst some corny moments)...But from Dancing On The Ceiling on he was cranking out some of the worst, sell-out music of that era...

>Better Producer

Al was never known for a producer, so by default, yes...

>Better Arranger

Same, by default..

>Better Catelog

Al edges him out...

>Better Albums

Are you counting The Commodores? Because with solo albums Lionel is losing that battle...

>and more versatile.

To me, this is what's most impressive about Lionel...How do you go from Zoom to writing for Kenny Rogers?...He was a hell of a songwriter...

>Lionel also got the Curl right as well.

Lionel's curl was on some GOAT shit...

>Lionel got a Better Falsetto as well.

No...

>Lionel B. Richie is a one of a Kind Artist. anybody can
>emulate what Al Green did and does and take 20 years off.

Come on, tell the truth Maxx...LOL....Like someone wisely noted, this is all about ?uestlove produing Al...And since the Roots mentioned your boy Kells in a song, he gets the wrath of Maxx...Wow, I wonder what would happen if Al or MJ said some shit you didn't like about Kelly?...Would your head just combust?....Because u wouldn't know what to do......lol

but on another note, the only point of diversion is that Al Green had FAR better albums under his name than Lionel did solo (especially past the first 2, but after he came back for "Back and Forth" Lionel found his lane and remained there).

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

The Doc owns it, but it ain't on his iPod for a reason.
Besides that song, The Doc only rocked "Janet", "Lay Back", and the occasional "Animal Instinct" (The Doc doesn't know why he liked that song when he was younger... now it sounds like '80s cheese to him).

it wasn't just because Lionel was gone (The Doc thinks Commodores 13 was 90x better than that joint), but no Thomas McClary and the Commodores going w/an outside producer meant that the Black was damn near zapped out of the group. Even with Walter Orange singing lead (as he does on Nightshift).

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

You're my dude and all, but I just dig Al Green a hundred times more.

Lionel is the better songwriter, he's the better producer, he's more versatile, and there's no question on the curl.

I just dig that Al Green sound so much more than the poppier Richie. I dig Richie too... but Al Green's one of my all-time favorites.

Look, I love Lionel Richie as much as the next female, BUT there is no way on God's green earth that Lionel is a better SINGER than Al "Grits" Green! NEVA!!!! And, I used to have a huge crush on Lionel as a kid. The man can write a song. This is true. BUT, he doesn't have the SOUL in his songs that Al does. Doesn't even come close. Al's collection of songs...shits on Lionel's. Sorry, but its true. Al is a better singer than Lionel. You are trippin.

To be honest, you really shouldn't even be comparing the two. Hell, even Lionel would probably say Al is a better singer!

that alone puts lionel "out-ra-geous!" richie below al green.

say what you want about al, he never sold his soul to massa, the one thing you accuse black artist of doing by the way, like lionel did.

that song makes lionel lose some serious cool points. and his career hasn't been the same since.

Lionel Richie is a Helluva Songwriter and versatile all around artist period. he is soulful and R.Kelly and RIck James both dig/dug some Lionel Richie.

Lionel Richie could have done Ebony eyes as Rick James could have done "Jesus is Love" and it would have worked.

like m.o.p. dig kenny g? i guess the answer is people are complicated. i wouldn't expect soemone who loved rick james to love lionel ritchie, but i'm sure i'm missing all kinds of cultural context.

i take green's voice (all aspects) and the arrangements on his songs any day, i also prefer the finished product but that is a matter of taste. songwriting i might go with lionel but it's more of a toss up, production is not really my thing so i couldn't really say.

kind of a surprise pick from you, in general i dig your ups of rick james and even the R as opposed to some cats (thought the prince post was good) but most (not all) of ritchie's stuff lacks bite to me. it's funk wearing deodorant IMO.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

damn Al Greazy Green was desperate and I ain't even gonna talk about being in that corny N synch Movie back in 2001 looking all lost like Donald Trump without a Hair Blow dryer.

Al Green stunk for 30 years easily aside from some good gospel songs. he lost it and fell off period. Lionel never got pitiful or badd as Al Green became. all Al Green Mushroom heads can speak on is 72-78 whereas Lionel RIchie 75-86 and hits in between.

Why? Because Al's "bad shit" never approached the deplorable levels of say "Say You, Say Me," Dancing On The Ceiling," or "Ballerina Girl"....I mean, are you talking about him doing a duet with Annie Lennox ("Put A Little Love In Your Heart") for a movie soundtrack being cornball? Because you can't be talking about the gospel soul of "Everything's Gonna Be Alright"...Green was still doing Christian based stuff in the '80s, hardly the type of music that one would do if he/she was looking to sell ALOT of albums...So, no, it hardly approached the embarrassing stuff Richie was doing in the second half of the '80s....

Again, no one (at least not me...) is disputing that Richie was the better overall songwriter and producer....But Al's solo catalogue means MORE to people...You may hear folks pumping Lionel's 'Dores albums...But aint nobody rocking out to the overt bullshit pop stuff he was doing (unless u are in the Middle East).....For knowledgeable music fans, we know Lionel was a talented and diverse songwriter.... But for the everyday music heads, they know Richie from being Nicole's dad...As that dude that got his ass whupped by his wife (a sista) for posting up with some white broad in their home...In other words, Al wins, hot grits and all...

And flipped it into some excellent pop music, and still kept it bangin' and FONKY.

Whereas Al's 80s shit was just extra lame, unfunky, and rather unenjoyable. You couldn't even dig it in a "This is so bad, it's good" way like some Lionel songs.

This is soul music.... Lionel has done some incredible things..he's great..

But Al is at the Essence of the Soul and R&B music....

I mean..

okay this here is recent:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUrghxZpVSw

and somebody said Al Green got Corny...

Al was a veteran artist...he was a Reverend...a gospel singer..and he was still bringing it better than dancing on the damn ceiling even here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIyQefMvl8g

and he was doing his thing in the new jack swing era with Al B. Sure and them.. Jheri Curl looking fresh as a mutha....lol

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HyElw9gebfY

Al Green will blow Lionel Richie off the stage right today..

and quite simply if you ain't got no Lionel Richie that's bringing it like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83Fu0zqztkY

this isn't even a debate..it's a shock post..

you called Lionel Richie great and then say well he didn't do this or that. Lionel Richie got songs that are timeless. He tied Irving Berlin for 9 straight years of Number 1 songs. Al Green had a Great run,but not a Career that Lionel Richie had/have and LBR Live is the truth still.
