OKYO (Reuters) - Sony Corp.'s (6758.T) new PlayStation 3 game console has problems when playing about 200 software games from previous version of the machine, the Sankei daily reported on Tuesday. ADVERTISEMENT
Sony started selling the latest version of its blockbuster game console in Japan on Saturday, and video game magazine publisher Enterbrain has said it sold 88,400 units of the console in the first two days after the launch, leaving most stores without any stock.
The PS3 should be able to load and run games designed for any of the earlier PlayStation models, but the paper said sound and screen problems have been reported when these games were played on the new console.
Officials at Sony's game division were not immediately available for comment.
Sony is going up against Microsoft Corp.'s (Nasdaq:MSFT - news) Xbox 360, on sale for the past year, and Nintendo Co.'s (7974.OS) Wii, which will hit U.S. stores next week.
Sony was able to ship only 100,000 units for the launch after a glitch in blue laser diode production disrupted its output plans. It plans to have the PS3 on shelves in North America on November 17, followed by a European launch in March.

November 13, 2006 - While IGN already has dozens of PS3 units littering the hallways of our offices, most gamers out there are avidly anticipating the much-hyped console's release this Friday. Gamers who pre-ordered the console from Gamestop/EB Games may be in for a big surprise as the November 17 launch date fast approaches.
We have received word that, due to lower than expected product yields, many Gamestop/EB Games stores have been forced to slash their stock counts for the console by as much as half. This may mean that many people who preordered the system will be unable to pick one up this Friday. Apparently, EB Games is selecting pre-order holders based on the pre-order date and phoning them up to inform them of the cancellation of their pre-orders.
Following last year's debacle with the lack of Xbox 360 launch units, EB Games had tried to remain conservative in the number of pre-orders it sold in an effort to avoid just this situation. While this may not exactly spell doom for the future of the new console, it may leave a sour taste in the mouths of gamers across North America as they scramble to find the almost nonexistent PS3 units they so desperately crave. On the bright side, those that do manage to get their hands on the PS3 will be able to jack up the prices even more when they inevitably resell them on Ebay.

i'm #5 in line and they are getting 6-8 and i have 5 (100%) ebay feedback. i couldn't even sell my preorder and i'm not going to borrow an account from a friend. i'm going to post the shit up @ $650(what i paid for this bitch) with no reserve. And i'll just see what happens...if it doesn't get any bids because they think i'm a scammer or whatever the fuck i'm opening the bitch up. Resistance like a mofo. it's win/win, sorta. lol.

I'm gonna wait for Tekken 6 before I cop. I've thought long and hard about this. And I got my call from Gamestop. I'm number 6 out of 8. But the games aren't impressive enough for me to keep it right now versus the amount of money I could make selling it and having a nice chunk of extra dough through the holidays.

Metal Gear Substance, Dead of Alive Ultimate, and a gang of sports games. I mean, it would be cool if they were supported tho. Especially the sports games. I'd love to get back on ESPN 2K5.

Sony is doing everything in their power to piss me off this week. From scaring me into thinking I wasn't gonna get my preorder to showing me some shaky games to telling me my Tekken 5 has compatibilty issues. That's my favorite PS2 game.
