Very impressive character model and animation, but the facial expressions are kinda creepy. I'm definitely interested though

good animations in a totally scripted sequence is nothing. any jackass can pull that off, the face was totally off. they showed this during E#, btw it's coming to 360 and PC also.

the shit is supposed to show emotion, but the face is two generations behind. it's bad.

Da fuck outta here.

That shit was nice. The facial shit was on point. If you wanna see "two generations behind" then look at MGS:3.

That preview got me excited. Its gonna be games like that that will make me buy a PS3 or 360.

its just a tech demo.

what does that mean?

they mo-capped everything and just used the game's engine, which was hit and miss.

her hair and body did not look very impressive at all.

her face and emotions were pretty good, but still a bit spotty at times.

the only impressive part of this is the fluid animation, which like i said, was mo-capped just for the demo.

not too much to get excited about yet, but it can have potential.

i'll keep an eye on its progress.

It was kinda "meh" til the end. For some reason when they showed her holding the gun at the camera her face and everything looked a lot more realistic.

If they could make the people look like that all the time, it would be pretty impressive.

I was so excited for this game but after reading previews I've come to the conclusion that it's gonna be incredibly wack. So this shit is just a series of quick-time events? Fuck that. I thought it was gonna be a third person action game like Syphon Filter or something. Speaking of which, when are they gonna bring that shit to PS3?

i want to watch it. i don't want to play it though.

it's a glorified tech demo and hopefully someone could use the somewhat impressive animation in a game that's actually a game.

i'll pass.

The Giant Bomb Quick look for Indigo Prophecy and the old Rebel FM Game Club podcasts helped, too.

Can't wait to see what these guys can do on a next gen console. This game is gonna be the shit.

i don't think this will be a fun ass gam...experience or whatever douchey shit they want to call it.

but i think it's an interesting idea, and i banking on it not being a next gen Dragon's Lair.

while i don't think this will be the groundbreaker they're hyping it up to be, i think it's definitely setting the stage for that next shit (though not singlehandedly).

Its not your fault.

Indigo Prophecy was an amazing game that required some actual thinking

HOWEVER

I dont think Heavy Rain is going to be worth a purchase. Is it a must rent? Hell yes. But to me it looks like the game is dumb short. You guys remember Mirrors Edge? Great game, too damn short.

Yeah, I don't know why nerds are complaining about the US cover. It's way better than the EU or Japanese one. It does have the tits factor but it also conveys the atmosphere of the game without being too morose. This is marketing. I know game covers are often dumbed down for the American market but this is hardly the horendous Ico cover that generated controversy back then.

that doesn't look very good at all. and for a game that supposed to basically be an interactive movie the voice acting is really terrible. doesn't sound natural at all. in that department mass effect 2 just took a huge shit on this game.

------------> http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2010/02/05/heavy-rain-demo-available-now/

So, Heavy Rain was on the Store after all, it’s just that it’s locked unless you complete the Four Days challenge.

Once completed, and the evidence is all submitted, you’ll get a code to download the demo which, according to this chap, is nearly 2GB in size.

So, hopefully you’ve been following the Four Days thing and you’ll be on your way to grabbing the code today – let us know what you think!

Update: it’s easier than that. Head on over to http://www.precinct52.com/case1117_briefing (assuming you’re signed up) and then choose 4 pieces of evidence. They are:

The short cigarette butt from the cigarette butts
The odd right hand driver picture from the tire tracks
The diner with a Sphinx picture on it
The Origami Bird
And the code will be yours. Thanks, Kotaku.

I was encouraged by the review and the demo has sold me. Slick presentation. I love crime films and I felt like I was playing one. Getting my law and order, csi on. Cool. Lighting could be better but that could have been my tele.

Wish you could just walk normally instead of that dumb as RE style control tho. That's gonna turn a lot of people off.

Other than that, it's great. The fight was actually really fun. I like how they do QTEs.

http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2010/02/10/heavy-rain-review-innovation-can-only-get-you-so-far/

Innovation in video games can be a rare commodity. Every day we see titles pour onto store shelves which are derivative of successful franchises, attempting to copy what the last guy did while making it slightly better to justify another $60 purchase. "Heavy Rain" is not one of those games. While it has roots in classic adventure gaming, it's unlike anything I've ever played. It's also not very good.

The Basics

Remember those "Choose Your Own Adventure" novels you read growing up? "Heavy Rain" is just like those, but with way more choice. You'll control four different characters in an eastern seaboard American city (inspired, the developers tell me, by Philadelphia). The characters are tied together by the actions of a scourge known as The Origami Killer.

The Origami Killer has been kidnapping children and drowning them in rainwater. Your actions as the four characters will determine whether the latest kidnap victim survives.

The Highs

A Feeling Of Choice
As you explore the environments of "Heavy Rain," you're given more options than you probably know what to do with. You can interrogate witnesses, light matches, make eggs, change baby diapers, start fights and take showers, to name a few. Almost all of these are optional and performing them will affect future events. Some will have a large impact (you get fired from your job or killed in action), while others may simply ingratiate you to another character. Whether big or small, you do feel like you are guiding the story by your choices, instead of the developers guiding you along a pre-determined path. It's extremely freeing.

Intense Moments
"Heavy Rain" is inspired by Hollywood thrillers like "Se7en" and there are definitely some Hollywood-quality moments throughout the course of the game. Car chases, fist fights, gun battles. These moments require you to hit certain buttons or shake the controller when a prompt appears on screen. Missing the prompt doesn't end your game, it just means you failed that specific action (like you miss a punch, which results in you getting hit in the gut). It makes these moments nerve-racking, in a good way, as you try to survive the frantic reflex battle.

The Lows

The First Three Hours
"Heavy Rain" has one of the slowest, most arduous openings of any game I've ever played. The first three hours features a lot of sitting around, a lot of menial tasks (like getting dressed, doing work, making dinner) and a lot of, well, boredom. The first few levels are designed to introduce you to the characters, but such an introduction takes as long as a feature length movie, and by the time the story starts picking up, you're sick of looking at two of the four protagonists. These intro levels are, by far, the worst part of "Heavy Rain," which is simply bad planning from a development side.

Serious Script And Story Problems
The story in "Heavy Rain" isn't very good, and it's the most derivative aspect of the game. It steals plot points liberally from gorefests like "SAW," and without a decent script behind it, it makes the similarities all the more transparent. The script in "Heavy Rain" is far from decent. Here are some sample lines I took from the beginning of the game:

Husband talking to wife: "Don't worry, I wouldn't want to be responsible for a diplomatic incident with your mother!"

Boy asking father for a balloon: "Please dad, can I have one? I'd really love to have one!"

Woman with insomnia: "A hot shower! That'll create the magic of sleep!"

Once you get beyond the wooden, unrealistic dialog, you're left with a number of plot holes and unearned twists throughout the game's conclusion. A good twist is one where the audience feels like they could've guessed if they had been paying more attention. The twist in "Heavy Rain" will come as more of a shock, simply because it makes no sense whatsoever. I can't see anyone playing through the ending of this game and being satisfied with the result.

Voice Actors Who Can't Do American Accents
There are a handful of international vocal tracks in the game, and I can't speak for how well the French or Spanish actors performed, but the English voice track is a disaster. Pascal Langdale, who plays the lead character, Ethan Mars, is incapable of a convincing American accent, and sounds more Irish than anything. Leon Okenden plays FBI agent Norman Jayden (another one of the main characters), and his version of an American accent is bordering on parody. The lead female actress, Jacqui Ainsley, does a passable job, but the only consistently solid actor in the bunch is Sam Douglas, who plays private investigator Scott Shelby, and he's actually from America!

It's possible that the developers at Quantic Dream, based in France, simply don't have an ear for a convincing American accent, but c'mon, hire a casting agent or something! Broke and desperate American actors are a dime a dozen! For such a story and dialog-based game, it's shocking that the extra effort wasn't put forth to get the right people in the right parts.

Nonsensical Tasks
While I applaud the level of freedom that "Heavy Rain" gives you, it's often at the price of making no sense whatsoever. I'll give you an example: You're an FBI agent in a police station. The chief, who you just met, is about to go into a press conference to talk about the serial killer's latest victim. Before he goes in, he starts fumbling with his tie, and then asks you to tie it for him. You. The male FBI agent he just met who is most definitely not his wife or mistress. These ridiculous tasks occur throughout the game, and they do wonders to take you out of the believability of the situation.

Technical Problems
Throughout "Heavy Rain" I came across numerous technical glitches. They range from moderately unfortunate (some graphical screen tearing) to should-not-have-shipped (sound cutting out, for 3-4 seconds, making the audio in the rest of the scene totally of out sync). That's not to mention the cutscene where a cop in a police station clips right through a desk. This isn't some gameplay collision issue, it's a cutscene! Clearly this game needed some more time in the oven.

The Verdict

As much as I want to applaud the freedom the player is given in "Heavy Rain," I can't seem to escape the fact that it's not very fun. If the script was solid, or the voice actors were convincing, it would've been more bearable, but neither is the case. "Heavy Rain" is an experiment that might've worked as a small, indie project, but when you've got the backing of Sony behind you, there's no excuse for a sub-par product. Upon finishing the game, I felt like I had just sat through a mediocre, 9-hour-long, made-for-TV movie. On the bright side, "God of War 3" comes out next month.

The offspring :-D

the demo did its job of giving me a good feel for what the game is like, but in my case that was not a positive. i agree with the reviewer for just about everything. the demo was more a less a bore to me, the dialogue/script was terrible including what was shown in other videos of the game, the voice acting is not good, etc...

i was planning on renting it, but now i don't even think i'll do that because of what the reviewer said about the first 3 hours. i had heard that the beginning was slow, but i don't wanna spend 3 hours brushing my teeth and shit like that!

http://blogs.ign.com/SCE_HeavyRain/2010/02/17/137923/

Testing in London
David Cage
Co-CEO, Quantic Dream
Writer/Director, Heavy Rain

User Tests are the most sophisticated form of torture. It consists of shutting yourself up behind a two-way mirror and observing people play your game in groups of ten throughout the day. You see them not understanding anything, doing the first thing that comes into their heads, getting stuck for twenty minutes on actions that should take one. We see them not reading the instruction, not remembering what they did in the last scene, doing everything except what they're supposed to do. So we scream behind the soundproofed glass, we insult them, curse them, foaming at the mouth, we shrivel up, we beg to be released.

And as if that wasn't enough, then we listen to them talking about the game, still hiding behind a two-way mirror (real FBI-style). And we hear all sorts of things and nothing in particular, generous compliments, sound criticism, players who are affected by the game and those who got the wrong game, the ones who thought for ten scenes that they controlled only one character, the ones who missed all the sequences but who found the game easy, those who stuck to the story and the characters, those who wanted Ethan to have a gun. You really hear all sorts of stuff in this sort of test. I suppose that's the object of the exercise. And it's not easy to know what to think about it all, between the things that really don't work and the rest.

Overall, positive feedback for the story, the characters, the interface and the action sequences. I'll settle for that. It's not bad at all.

A weird story though, those action sequences. I spent a year justifying them each time they came up, and now the players are regularly listing them as their favorite scenes.

The other amusing thing was the feeling some players had that their actions had no impact on the story, in other words that, whatever they did, the same thing was going to happen. A lot of them brought up this point in the one-to-one interviews and at the round-table session where all the players compared their impressions. It was only when they started talking about it that they realized they had seen very different things in the scenes, much to their surprise. Because a player makes choices without realizing it. They don't realize their actions have logical consequences and therefore impact on the story. They had to talk about it in order to realize this.

Another strange comment: everybody thought the game was easy, even those who failed in all the action scenes. It took me a few days to understand what had happened. There are no game overs or lives in HR. The player never starts a scene all over again because he failed, failing in a chase scene results in the fact that he doesn't catch the suspect, but you don't start the sequence all over again. And the story continues. As a result, some players didn't even realize that they'd failed in a chase because the game didn't stop and so they thought the suspect couldn't be caught.

It's weird how deep-rooted certain video game codes can be.

We organized our own user tests at Quantic in order to have them more often (every three days) in little groups of three and to try out direct permanent access to the player to see how they were playing, what they do, what they like and don't like. The overall feedback for the game is excellent. Just as well, after the weeks of intense doubt we've just been through.

Same feedback from the fairs where the game is shown and from the presentations I have done. This weekend, Eurogamer in London (presentation and interviews all day long), Sunday User Tests in London again, Monday presentation at Micromania Game Show in Paris, then back to development. I took the evening off the following Monday to see my kids. I hadn't seen them for a week and I was beginning to feel the winds of anger rising. "Dad, just because you have a lot of work doesn't mean you don't see your children any more" (my 9-year-old son).

You're right, son. You're entirely right. Dad's gonna try to be a bit more reasonable.

I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror after two weeks of sleeping three hours a night.

Scary as hell.

Players testing Mad Jack at the Eurogamer Show

Eurogamer’s presentation in London. Ten minutes before, the room was empty. I told myself that it would be a fairly smooth presentation… I looked out at the window and here is what I saw. The show was just not open yet…

In response to Reply # 0

The graphics look great judging from the demo and it looks as if the story is nice enough. It's mainly the control scheme that I don't think I could stomach for long enough peroids. It looks as if it could get very mononotous based from the demo. For some reason, I don't see this game dropping in price either. Guess I will have to wait and see.

So I figured it out beforehand on my own... just followed the lines on the paper and the picture on the cover.

apparently there is an alternate fold using the same lines... one of those old fortune teller majiggers used to be all the craze in grade school.

I was thinking it looked familiar in that opening scene.

http://g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/700258/exclusive-heavy-rain-interview-quantic-dreams-david-cage-featuring-new-gameplay-footage.html

G4: How much research went into crafting an American setting when a Parisian team is behind the project? What difficulties did you face in generating a sense of authenticity?

DC: The difficulty when you want to set your story in another country and within another culture is to avoid making a postcard of this country as you imagine it seen from where you leave. We also wanted to avoid all the clichés that are usually used about the US. So before the project started, as I was writing it, we went to Philadelphia for two weeks with some people of the team and our cameras. I chose Philadelphia pretty much per chance. I liked M. Night Shyamalan’ s movies and when I checked where he was shooting, I realized he was from Philadelphia. So we booked a plane, took our bags and traveled to the East Coast of the U.S., not having a clue of what we would discover.

We spent a tough two weeks exploring the city with a movie scout taking us to the worst places, the poorest areas, and the abandoned factories, discovering another side of America that you don’t often see in Hollywood movies. We visited the houses of people, we saw kids living in the streets, streets with garbage that no one collects anymore, houses about to collapse where people were still living, schools built across the street of a petroleum installation, etc. We saw barbed wire all over the place, railways leading to nowhere, rusted bridges, and many other things.

The places we visited and the people we met within these two weeks were the real founding moment of Heavy Rain. If I could only transcribe 1% of what I saw and what I felt when I was there in the game, it would make me very happy.

The map in the detectives office is a map of downtown Philly with the real street names and names of places (the hospital I was born in is even marked on it) but the map the FBI dude pulls up with ARI is some made up place (kinda looks like NY tho).

I downed the whiskey, Disinfected my hands, and cut that fucker off with the axe.

was there any other way around this that didn't involve me cutting it off or was that my only option for finding the next clue?

I'm pissed PSN is down too... I'm warning you, player.

Don't say I warned you.

You really want to read this?

I hope you've beaten it.

LAST CHANCE.

Yeah it was *YOU KNOW WHO*. That's right. *YOU KNOW WHO* is the gotdamn origami killer. And YOU HELPED *YOU KNOW WHO* do it.

Since I've been robbed of getting back into my 2nd play through, let me ask this of the people who've beaten this game...when did you figure out *YOU KNOW WHO* did it?

Did you see any signs of *YOU KNOW WHO's* guilt?

What did you think of *YOU KNOW WHO's* nightmare?

What did you think of *YOU KNOW WHO's* Solid Snake through *YOU KNOW WHAT*? (Real PS3 head know what I mean by Solid Snaking LOL)

Did the creepy train station mess with you?

Did you kill anyone by accident?

Did you kill a Player Character?

Did you find any easter eggs? odd trophies?

Why did *YOU KNOW WHO* die in the most horrific way? Typical if you ask me. LOL

By the middle of the game I knew it was *YOU KNOW WHO*. And the flashback confirmed my hunch. The *YOU KNOW WHAT* of the kids in the flashback through me off and all the things leading up to that point where designed to throw you off. The scene in the *YOU KNOW WHOS* house after *YOU KNOW WHO* dies by *YOU KNOW WHAT* proved *YOU KNOW WHO* doesn't mind killing.

And what about *YOU KNOW WHO*'s blackouts? This isn't really explained but hopefully it will be in the next play through.

I censored this just in case, I know you people.
Add on but put *SPOILER WARNINGS* on your answers.

Probably the best story in a game I've played.

Im pretty satisfied with the ending I got...

*SPOILERS*

In my ending....

Jayden fights Shelby and Shelby dies a gruesome death.

Ethan saves Shaun with the help of Madison and all 3 buy a new apartment together.

Jayden is praised on a TV show, flushes his drugs... but ARI ends up blending over into the real world for him (felt bad about that)

A little upset that I couldnt save Lauren in the car... but overall im very satisfied with the ending I got.

So Ethan's blackouts were never explained, right? Why did he wake up on Carnaby Street with an origami figure in his hand? I mean, Shelby had to put the origami dog in his hand each time, but its a little frustrating this was never explained, unless I missed soemthing.

Overall i loved it, def one of the best experiences ive had playing a game. The whole concept of a private detective "investigating" his own killings so he has access to the families and evidence to dispose of was brilliant. Couldnt believe i was helping him get away the entire time- that was a real nice touch.

They gone? OK, players.

didn't get all the clues and Shelby got away scott free. Madison is killed by that Doctor...the main reason why I playing again, to save her. Jayden ODs after not finding the Origami Killer. Ethan Mars shoots himself in the head.

Yeah. I gotta replay this for a better ending.

so crazy how drastic things can change depending on how you played.

you know at any point in the game if you fuck up and die, you can go to main menu and replay the chapter.

you can also jump to any chapter, and save from there going forward. so if you want to replay the game, you can skip the boring shit at the beginning and get right to the meaty decision chapters. apparently you still get the trophies for the diff endings if you do it this way.

***SPOILERS OF COURSE***

The game was really, really formulaic. All Madison does is help Ethan get better, she really serves no purpose to this story, at least when I played. Whenever I saw her face, I knew she was about to perform complex medical operations on Ethan.

Speaking of Ethan, I put him through hell just to see how the game experience might change. Turns out, not at all really. I got in a major car accident, was practically electrocuted to death, lost/nearly lost fights, crawled too fast on the glass to reach the exit and got all mauled up...I mean dude was toasted, and you absolutely couldn't tell. I was disappointed in that. Most disappointing was in the electric field when I was for sure dead from electrocution, but instead a cutscene triggered with Ethan leaving the building. It would have taken just as much effort to get out of that electric field as stay in it to the end or death, so it was frustrating to see Ethan give up without my saying so.

He also should have died when you storm into the drug dealer's apartment with a gun, but right after the dealer says he's going to blow your head off he immediately switches his tune and tells you to die somewhere else. That was lame, I should have died.

I loved Jayden's stuff and I think if someone revived the formula of the Blade Runner game for PCs with this new format it would be a fucking smash success. But this game had a weak story, bland voice acting and repetitive situations. The unique experience made most of that stuff less noticeable, but I didn't expect the game to be over when it was and too often I felt like I really DIDN'T have that much control over the game, I was just going through the motions it asked me to go through to watch the next scene.

If you play it like a game and try to “break” it, you’re not really gonna have fun.

It’s definitely a flawed game and I agree on the voice acting (JAAASOONNNNN), but a lot of the fun comes from suspending your disbelief and just going with the game.

I was told everything I did had a consequence I couldn't look back on. More often than not, that wasn't actually true and I was forced to do something eventually. Certain things actually weren't possible.

It's cool there's a lot of different ways for things to play out, but there's also a lot of little things that pull me out.

Another example was when Shelby first meets Lauren, I knew from the demo I didn't have to leave my call card if I didn't want to so I didn't leave it, but she still referred to that scene later like I asked her for extra info anyway. I was hoping she'd stay out of the story since I hadn't reached out to her.

177. "Interview: Spoiling Heavy Rain with David Cage"
In response to Reply # 0

http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/19/interview-spoiling-heavy-rain-with-david-cage/

Once a major release has been completed and propelled to the top of the sales charts, the critical discussion surrounding it typically evaporates just as the Next Big Thing appears on the horizon. But Heavy Rain -- whether you like it, love it or loathe it -- has been kept afloat in popular opinion, with critics still debating its controversial design and embarrassing themselves as they attempt to shoehorn water puns like "afloat" and "evaporates" into ham-fisted introductory paragraphs.

We drew Heavy Rain's director and writer, the soft-spoken, passionate and occasionally enigmatic David Cage, into the ongoing discussion and asked him to elaborate upon the game's story, its technology and its critical reception. Oh, and the nature of the Origami Killer, which means ...

SPOILER WARNING: The following interview contains massive, big-huge spoilers for Heavy Rain. If you have not completed Quantic Dream's cinematic adventure, do not proceed beyond the break -- and don't even think about reading the comments. Just turn around and slowly R2 away.

Joystiq: There's a trophy in Heavy Rain that says, "Thank you for supporting interactive drama." What's the story behind that?

David Cage: It was a simple way to say thank you to people who supported what we tried to achieve with this. We sometimes said in the past that buying Heavy Rain was some kind of political thing to do. It was like voting for this industry to change and evolve. And by buying the game this is exactly what people did.

In which ways were you most successful in creating that "interactive drama?"

You know, the main goal of Heavy Rain was to trigger different types of emotions and not ones you usually find in video games. So, it was not about stress or fear or tension or frustration, it was about empathy. It was about sadness, it was about depression, it was about making you feel uncomfortable. And, basically, enlarging the kind of emotions that you can feel. I think, reading the reviews, reading the forums, talking to gamers, this is something that people felt and reacted to very positively. And I heard people were crying playing the game, which is basically the greatest thing you can hear as a game creator.

Earlier today, Richard Hilleman from EA said that when you work on a game for two to four years, and when you're done with it, the only emotion you feel is relief. Do you think that's true?

I don't know if it's the only emotion, but I definitely feel relief. I feel relief for me, for my company, because I was personally exposed. I'm, you know, jumping on tables for two years, saying, "This is going to be something, give it a chance," etcetera etcetera. If the game was a disaster, that would probably have been the end of my career. So, you certainly feel relief, but at the same time, I feel really happy. Not only for me but for the people who trusted me to make this game, including some key execs at Sony who took a big risk in signing this game and pushing us forward, and giving us support during all these years, because I think that if Heavy Rain had been a disaster, it would have had consequences -- probably for them to a certain extent.

I'm proud, also. I'm proud and it's not an ego thing, I'm proud for my team. People worked very hard for years, and really working hard and hoping that we were doing the right things. I'm really happy for them and proud of what they've done.

Was there a clear line during development, between when you were making the tools to create this game and, "Now we're making Heavy Rain"?

Yeah. We were heavily relying on tools, and this is a cultural thing in the company since the first game was made. It's always a risk, because you spend a lot of time working on the technology and the tools, rather than working on the game. But you hope that the time you lose at the beginning will be time that you save in the end, and that will allow you to go further to make tweaks and changes in a much easier way. But it's something that made us really nervous, because you need to draw a line, because there is a moment where you just lose time, and there is no way you're going to save time in the end because you spent too much time working on the tools. So, yeah, this is the way we worked.

How robust and effective are the tools at this point for you to be able to say, "Okay, I want to do another story on this platform"? Or maybe even for someone else to do a story?

Well, actually, we always saw Heavy Rain much more like a format than just another game, so as part of the format, we have the grammar that we have established to tell a story. But also the interface, of course, also the production pipeline and all the tools behind it. Now, this is really easy to use to create something else and tell a different story using exactly the same pipeline. You can get a very different experience in the end -- different world, different characters, different gameplay -- but still based on similar rules. That was an investment, definitely, but now it's there and it's interesting to see how other people would use it.

So, it's safe to assume that you'll also be using the same technology in future games?

Not exactly. We would use the next iteration of the technology and especially we would work on a new iteration of the engine. People gave very positive feedback about the graphics in Heavy Rain and the characters and stuff, but we believe this is still very far from what we could do in the very near future. So, we want to improve that and we hope that our next product will really show a big gap in graphical quality.

Going to the film comparison -- were there any "deleted scenes" in Heavy Rain? Things you couldn't finish and had to cut from the main game?

There were no scenes that we were unable to finish, but there were scenes that were deleted for other reasons, especially because we have a very slow start in the game. We wanted to really take the time to use the characters, make you know them and like them and feel real empathy for them, and create the relationship between Ethan and his family, and then with his son. But at the same time, there were a couple of scenes there that were maybe redundant and were just saying the same thing and were just slowing everything down a little bit too much. So these scenes were deleted.

One of the main criticisms has been against the actors. How do you respond to people saying they weren't satisfied with the performances, even though the technology was really good?

Yeah, well, you know, you can always complain about this or that. My only question is: did you feel something when you played? And you cannot say "yes" and say "the actors were not that good." It's not possible, because why did you feel something if the actors were not there? The actors did a great job, usually. Some people complained not about the acting so much but also the fact that some of them had some kind of accent. Yeah, okay, well, we will do a better job next time. But does it affect in any way what you felt and what you experienced? I don't think so.

I noticed that the voice actress for Madison was different in the DLC that was just released. Why the change?

Well, some of The Taxidermist's assets were created like, two years ago, and we just wanted to use these assets. It made sense to do it that way. But for the full game, we used someone different.

You've said that the game is meant to be mature and aimed at adult gamers. Where did you draw the line in terms of content that would be inappropriate and appropriate for that intention?

Anything that was not gratuitous was appropriate. This is exactly where we draw the line. There are scenes, like when you see Madison in the shower in her first scene, that may look gratuitous at first but, in fact, I think it really helps to build a relationship with the character. You saw her really fragile and vulnerable and naked, and this is out of the way now, and then you can really start to like her as a character. I think that the perception of Madison would have been very different without this first scene where you share intimacy.

The city is never mentioned by name in the game, as far as I know.

Yup.

Is it Philadelphia?

It was some kind of mixture, but yeah, we spent some time at the beginning of development in Philadelphia with the team and taking pictures and filming and exploring different places. We were there with a movie scout to take us to different places. We wanted really to see especially poor areas and industrial areas, because we wanted the background not just to be a background. We wanted it to tell something about, maybe our societies in general, maybe about the US especially. In most Hollywood movies you see Miami or you see Las Vegas or you see great places and scenes. But it's pretty rare that you see poor environments and this is something that really impressed us when we visited Philadelphia -- how many poor people there were, how violence was really there -- pretty much everywhere -- coming from poverty and how some people are left behind. This is really in the background, it's not the subject of Heavy Rain, but we were really shocked by what we discovered there and we wanted to talk about it.

I was actually very interested in the ARI glasses. So, Norman has a problem with Tripto and you have to keep making the decision, "Am I going to take the Tripto or not?" I think it's the barman in the vision that tells him not to overindulge in "you-know-what." But is he talking about Tripto or is he really talking about ARI?

There's a strange mixture. And there are strange things happening between ARI and Triptocaine. It's not really explained in Heavy Rain how they relate to each other, but they relate to each other, definitely.

Is it possible for Jayden to die just by using too much ARI?

Yes, yes. And he can become crazy and he can die by OD-ing. I mean, many different things can happen to him. I thought it was also a nice way to talk about addictions in general, and you can see it like addiction to virtual environments ...

To work.

Yeah, to work, to many different things. And I thought it was an interesting way to talk about it.

Did you think that the glasses -- compared to the setting of the game -- maybe felt a little anachronistic? Like they were a sci-fi element?

Hmm. That was a question at the very beginning and ARI is really the only element that is not exactly from our world. But at the same time I thought that it was maybe not available today, but that it would be in the very near future. All the design around ARI was based around two things. It was based on added reality experiments, and there are things already existing today where you can wear these glasses. I saw a very impressive demo from, I don't know what lab, but where they had tanks actually moving around your environments. So, really, using reality around you but adding the information to it. If it exists in the labs today, maybe it's not that far away.

And the second thing: it was based on a commercial from HP, where it's filmed like this and where the character can use data as if they were physical objects. So, when he wants to take his pictures, he can just open them and they appear, and he stretches them or wants to get rid of them. We thought that was really interesting and very intuitive and very ... wow. We thought that, as it was the only element that was okay not to pretend this is sci-fi, this is yeah... it's not today, but it could be maybe ten years from now.

It would help game development a lot if you had access to those tools now.

Ohhhh yeah.

If you press L2 in the game, it brings up the character's thoughts. But I wonder if, at some level, the characters are lying to the player, because when I press that button and I'm playing as Shelby, I don't have "Oh, I'm a serial killer" popping up.

We thought that was not in his mind. I don't know that, if you're a killer, if this is something that you have in your mind: "Oh, by the way, I'm a killer." We paid attention to check his thoughts and make sure that he doesn't lie at any point, although he doesn't say all the truth all the time. But all his dialogue can be read in two different ways. You can read it first without knowing who the killer is, and say, "Oh, that's fine," but once you know, it takes a different meaning. Be careful because that's a spoiler, by the way.

Oh, I'll definitely mark everything past a certain point as a spoiler. It's why I left these until the end. It's interesting, because you're playing as yourself, but also as someone else at the same time. It's strange that you're not always privy to the same things.

It's a strange relationship with this character, because you realize at the end that he lied to everybody, including you.

Right.

Because he had his own agenda all the way, and you thought that you were making him do what he was supposed to do, but at the same time he used you also to follow his own agenda.

But you also lied to the player. I'm not calling you a liar in a bad sense, but when you're in the antique shop and the camera cuts away, and you don't see that Shelby has gone and done something ... I thought that was pretty clever, because in retrospect, it changes your whole motivation for completing that scene. At first, you feel like you're going to get in trouble ...

Mmm-hmm.

And you won't be able to catch the killer.

Yeah.

But now, when I think back on it, you're actually doing a bad thing.

This is something I really enjoyed in the writing. It was to make sure that every single thing of Shelby had these double meanings, and that if you don't know he's the killer, it's fine, it makes sense. But if you know, it takes another meaning. I really enjoyed that and think it worked most of the time and, in fact, when you play it, you discover that in one of his first scenes, when he goes to Hassan's shop, one of his choices in the dialogue can be, "I also lost someone I loved," when he's talking to Hassan. And, in fact, this is the key to the story, because he's talking about his brother and this is why he killed everybody.

So, there are clues here and there that you may notice or not, but once you know, definitely there are different hints that weren't there. So it's not coming out of the blue, like, "Oh my god why is he the killer?" There are reasons and if you play again, there are different things that give you clues about this. But, at the same time, very few people discovered he is the killer before we reveal it in the game. That was really a pleasure, because when you work on something that is a whodunnit kind of mystery, if people know after half an hour -- "Oh, of course I knew it was him" -- then you've lost. But here, everybody loves Scott Shelby.

Yes, he's my favorite character.

He's everybody's favorite character and so it's really a shock when you realize.

I suspected Blake.

He was a good suspect.

He was very aggressive ...

When you're playing as Ethan, you get the choice of killing the drug dealer or sparing his life. I was curious as to why, when you kill the drug dealer, there didn't seem to be a consequence at the end. You get the code, but shouldn't Ethan go to jail?

Well, there is no reason for him to go to jail if the drug dealer is found dead. Nothing leads directly to him.

Doesn't he throw up next to the body?

Yes.

That's not enough to get him in trouble?

... Why?

I thought that would be significant evidence. I thought he deserved to be punished. I killed the drug dealer on the second time I played, and didn't agree with it.

Okay, so the first time you didn't shoot?

No.

And the second you shot.

No, I don't think there was any evidence against him at this stage, especially because the guy is a drug dealer. The first lead was probably, "Okay, he's a drug dealer, so some kind of junkie came or another drug dealer," or whatever. But, it's a very short time frame in the game, we're really near the end here. And, you know, if you had killed the drug dealer and managed to save your son, it would have been a very cruel ending to have the police come in and arrest Ethan. By the way, you need to go to jail. Shit.

That would have been a downer.

It's a little bit immoral, but it asks a very interesting question to the player. This scene was all about -- can we make killing someone in a video game something significant? Because in most games, killing people is what you do, so you don't care and you shoot zillions of people and you don't give a shit. Here, what I wanted to do was say, "Look, you just need to press this trigger, you kill this man and you get a reward. Do it." And we realized about 80 percent of people don't shoot, just because it's about role play. They feel they are Ethan, and they believe Ethan would not kill. And that's really interesting, because it's so easy and it's a part of saying, "This is not a video game." It's suspension of disbelief at some point and you forget that this is about a video game. And you don't kill anybody. Come on, it's just a bunch of pixels in a program. So you can shoot and get your reward and move on.

Beat the game.

Yeah. But here, there is this suspension of disbelief where people say, "Well, wait a minute, he's a father, he has these daughters, I cannot take a life to save my son. It's not fair. It's not what Ethan would do." And this is one of the scenes I really enjoy.

I wasn't sure why, after Madison escapes the apartment -- if she escapes the apartment -- she'd be able to phone agent Jayden. I don't remember them ever meeting in the game.

They never met but, actually, she's a journalist and she knows -- because everybody knew -- that a guy from the FBI was there and she had a contact at the newspaper. It was easy for her to find his number.

I actually didn't realize that she was a journalist until Ethan found out, so it was a bit of a surprise to me.

That's great! So you got all the twists.

How about the Origami figure in Ethan's hand when he wakes up? I can't explain that.

I can.

Would you like to explain it to me?

Uh ... no.

... Okay.

Actually, no, because this is what Hitchcock calls a MacGuffin. He said a very interesting rule is that you can only have one MacGuffin in a story. A MacGuffin is something that is not explained. And one is okay -- if you have three, then that story doesn't make any sense. But if you have something where you leave the audience space to, you know, try to understand and make up their own answers for that, that's fine. And I thought that worked in the context of Heavy Rain, not to explain but have people figure it out.

Okay.

I don't know if you're happy with this answer.

the gameplay's a lot better than I would have expected

but they really haven't made a leap in their "digital actors"

the lip sync is crazy off and the expressions of the faces aren't convincing. they're not modeled well enough and the muscles around the eyes and eyebrows are completely dead.

*shrug* I dunno, it might be fun to play through though

Planning on getting it at the end of the month. Looking forward to playing it.

how i made it the whole way through i'm not sure. Maybe i'm not used to this kind of game, i'd rather and aim and shoot than press square circle circle triangle for perfect headshots.

The amount of choices in the game are just staggering.....it's awesome. I went through it the first time and made decisions as I would in real life.....I will prob go back through and mess around with a lot of the decisions to see the results and different endings.

First go-round I got the happy endings with Ethan saving Shaun, with Madison showing up to warn him about the cops, and Jayden fighting Shelby until Shelby died... I peeped You Tube to see the other endings... grim stuff... awesome game, though...

I got a PS3 for Christmas and that was one of the must-play recommendations from the Sony camp at work.
