"the indispensable Mac software post"
Sat Dec-31-05 11:44 PM by The Damaja

name the applications you couldn't live without, any gems you've stumbled across. I always get sidetracked when I go to look for free software, because most of it is quite specialist (workflows for Photoshop etc), not just general use

anyway

- iSerial Reader. easily the best thing I have. after a week of using it, you'll be glancing over your shoulder for fear of angry developers.

- iCal ... I just realized you can use this to schedule events on your computer, ie. tell it to run an Automator flow or Applescipt at 8am to wake up to internet radio or whatever. Just go to 'create alarm'. btw, the Energy Saving panel in system prefs lets you schedule startup or wakeups and shutdowns and sleeps

- GoogleEarth Beta... yes, you can get it on Mac. If you've not tried this, you need to. Satellite images with different layers of detail mapped over a 3D model of the whole globe. 'Fly To' any location, find your house, find where JFK got shot (with 3D buildings), switch on all sorts of markings like stations, roads, borders, historical info, webcams. I typed in 'Area 51' and it started zooming in on Nevada... then crashed, lol. Worked eventually though. I don't think this is officially available from Google... inbox me if you can't find it

- Adium... as someone else put it, "iChat on crack". Supports all the messengers (MSN, AIM etc)

- ffmpegx. Shareware program (*cough*iserialreader*cough*) that can take almost any video format and convert it to almost anything else (in theory... I found that .rm files only converted directly to .avi files). Also has loads of detailed encoding settings like resolution and aspect if you need them. Can rip audio out of videos and stuff like that. Can also play files itself.

- D-Vision. Shareware. I use it to combine AVI files into one big file.

- Limewire. Best and fastest thing for downloading songs and popular files

- Azureus. Bittorrent client

- ircle - internet relay chat client. Mainly worth mentioning because of the stuff you can get on irc... google: #macfile

- ssx - Soulseek program. (i think it's called SoulSeeX in full... which is distinct from SoulSeekX, which is a piece of crap) Very nice interface and fully functional. I've not used it much so I'm not sure if it gets search results and downloads as well as it should. But at least you don't need to install FINK or anything like for Nicotine.

- soulseek classic - Soulseek client for Mac OS 9. Obviously you can run it on Classic mode. This is what we used before someone invented a decent OS X client (even now, those others require 10.3 or higher I think). Doesn't support chat, uploading, or browse host... but I got a hell of a lot of stuff of it nevertheless. I think it may even let you cheat a bit in terms of queing.

- Chicken of The VNC. Use this to remote control your mac (first switch on Apple Remote Desktop in the target Mac's Sharing preferences. you can download the ARD client from apple if you don't have it already). It runs the target computer's screen inside a window of the remote computer.

- Salling Clicker. Shareware program that lets your Bluetooth mobile phone control the Mac. It has a bunch of scripts to run commands for most common programs (and you can add your own), and can do various other cool things like proximity detection - ie tell iTunes to pause when you leave the room, with your phone obviously, or when you receive a phonecall. Incidentally, OS X has bluetooth remote control built in. Just go to the bluetooth settings on your phone, then 'remote control' then choose your computer from the device list (you'll need to pair the devices from the bluetooth Mac menu first). It has basic controls for programs, and you can control the mouse with the minijoystick.

- 'Create Disk Image' automator workflow. Makes a file into a .dmg, which means your computer can recognize it as a drive or an inserted disc. Or you can use Toast to mount it as a CD in the CD drive. Get your Automator flows from www.automatorworld.com

- Xkeys. Basically lets you assign your function keys to do anything, like open a program, or run a script, and other things i've forgotten, finder operations probably. I used to have F10, F11, F12 set to play/pause, bck skip, fwd skip on iTunes (I think they were actually applescipts it was rrunning. Get your applescripts at www.dougscripts.com). It runs in the background invisibly all the time. Doesn't show up in the dock, only in the Force Quit menu and system prefs.

- you know you can make .zip files by right clicking (control clicking) and selecting 'create archive' ?

- Google Maps widget. works in all countries supported by google maps. gets the maps without having to open the webage

- SysStat widget. gives you readouts on ram usage, disc space, network activity, CPU activity, bandwidth usage, uptime. you can minimize the info you don't want to see always

- obviously you'll want to visit divx.com to get your codecs to play avi files

- you can force an application to open a file by holding the apple key and dragging the file to its dock icon

- you can connect straight to ftp (and afp and other) servers from the 'go' menu, or pressing command-k. often neglected

- Terminal lets you access a good command line text editor called Vim. You can do things like compare two similar text files side by side with the differences highlighted

you should be able to find all this stuff easily by googling

please mention any that you know

and happy new year motherfukas

In response to Reply # 5

click one of the numbers (try to get the correct version)
and it copies it to the clipboard automatically
then you go to register the program (enter serial number), and paste into the text box
sometimes it will give you more detailed instructions on how to crack the program

it's just a database of names and numbers though, it doesn't do anything by itself

In response to Reply # 0

you can set this program to automatically bid for you, say, in the last 5 seconds of the auction. that way other ebayers don't have a chance to outbid you (unless they put in a higher ceiling bid than you anyway... but by waiting til the dying seconds you can lull them in to a false sense of security). good if you just plain forget to bid on things, too

also use it to keep track of your ebaying without opening a web browser.

i'll tell you if it works or not in about 7 days

for Shiira the page turning effect and tab expose feature are brilliant... unfortunately my mac isn't fast enough to do them smoothly (unless there's something else disrupting it... let's see... yes it runs a bit better without iSerial open which seems to hog resources for some reason). It's cool how you can customize the skin a lot. Is it really faster? I've only loaded a few webpages, not sure that i noticed any difference. Maybe i need to let it build up a cache or something

but i installed "mini shiira" which is a little browser in widget form for the dashboard. it's supoib

now i just need to find someone with a fullly loaded iPod and invite them round to try Senuti

Gotta add VLC media player - for when nothing else will play that dodgily encoded episode of Lost you downloaded...!

Also, MacJanitor is great for maintenance stuff, especially if you have a laptop. And check out Comic Life - a fantastic little app that let's you make comic strips from your own photos, complete with speech bubbles, captions, etc. Great fun!

Oh and Stuffit Expander is pretty much a must have for all those who've recently switched - you'll come across .sit files everywhere in Macland.

•Acqlite- A good P2P app, what Acquisition should be, free, lightweight, and effective.

•NetNewsWire- THE BEST RSS reading app for the Mac. I heard it actually has the largest install base of any software aggregator, Mac or PC, but that was a while ago.

•Adium- See above. I do gripe about the file transfer, though.

•BuddyPop- Puts your address book contacts at your fingertips, with a beautiful interface.

•Quicksilver- I wish I could properly explain Quicksilver, but it's something like a launcher, but that's just the beginning. It's sort of (and don't let this description scare you off) a anticipatory graphical command line interface. It'll change the way you use your computer, and increase your efficiency by leaps and bounds.

•Netflix Freak- A great 3rd party client to control your Netflix queue, also allows you to do a lot of stuff you can't do on their site, like shuffle your queue.

•Synergy- My preferred iTunes control/display app, but I'm told there're good free ones that are comparable. I like this one.

•Camino- Also a good browser, along with Shiira, Firefox, and Safari. Actually a OS X native browser by the Mozilla folks, it's very nifty.

•1001- A good uploading client for Flickr and more.

•VLC- I think this program can play just about any media file.

•Butler- Kind of a launcher app, very interesting, play around with it.

•gDisk- Use your gMail account like a online drive.

•Handbrake- A great DVD ripping program.

•MymyspaceMail- Keep track of your Myspace messages, comments, and friend requests without all that gaudy bullshit.

btw if you're inboxing me for this , best include a email address i can send to. i downlaoded it from IRC so i can't just send you a web address. see if that up there works though

ok... if all else fails... you can log on to EFnet using an IRC client
join #macfilez, look for the first user who has 'dcc' (those are the fileserving bots) after their nickname, query them saying 'xdcc list', then type 'xdcc #6' or whatever the Google Earth number is, and accept the file transfer. oh and don't say anything in the chatroom, they seem to boot people for talking lol

Cabos - Limewire/ wo the limewire bullshit. fast. incredible.

Transmission - small, lightwight bittorrent client. i used to rock azureus, but it would make my pb12" slug along. now i dl to my hearts content.

Shakespeer - by far the best DC++ client on the mac. my school has a robust DC++ network so im on it.

iSquint - transforms my videos from basically any type to an ipod/itunes compatible video.

Newsfire - dope dope dope RSS reader. ........but it costs $20, the software while good,is priced too expensively. if you dont cop, it nags you to no end. (so if anybody got a serial, or cracked copy. holla at me.)

I tried it, I really hated it. It seems like it has lots of potential, but, for now, it's pretty unusable for me. I couldn't drag and drop groups of my RSS feeds? It needs work, though I do like what I'm seeing. It's just really buggy, and kinda half-baked for now. Definitely a 1.0

the "smart burn folders" feature, i also use toast on occasion, when im burning a really important data CD.

Toast is cool, its just that i like the fact of not really having to create a playlist, i can just make a new folder and burn the contents within.

I have one major problem with Adium... NO PRIVACY CONTROL!!!! I'm constantly getting random messages on the AIM side.... mostly spam.

Can't seem to get Fire to work on here for some reason. Crashes everytime. Maybe a lack of Universal support... I don't know.

Overall, Adium is great. It has by far the most add-on support. And I like my Red Sox duck dock icon too much.

Thanks to me cracking a program just now with iSerial Reader (thank you for that), it was suggested I use a firewall program called Little Snitch to keep the program from contacting it's website. So far, Little Snitch appears to be a nice lil firewall, allowing you to block pacific port traffic from particular programs and IP addresses.

Check it out here http://www.obdev.at/products/littlesnitch/index.html

And of course, iSerial Reader has a sn for that too.

Schedule audio recordings of anything from streamed RealPlayer media to a flawless cross-faded playlist in iTunes that you want to play as one long track to WMV files that maybe have a DRM you're not too fond of.

Records ONLY the audio from the app you want it to, has a graphic equalizer, the ability to save settings from one session to the next,

VERY good app.

any updates?

mine:

desktop manager: incredible piece of software that allows me to have multiple desktops that are easily switchable and incredible easy to use, supports hotkeys. changed the way i used my mac.

kgtd 0.83: getting things done, works like a charm to organize my agenda so i can easily transfer it to ical.

cabos: limewire, w/o the limewire bullshit.

battle for wesnoth: highly addictive turn based strategy game. fun for all lol.

pinki: easily creates thumbnail images for pictures with a simple hotkey.

camino: after trying many different browsers, i think i have finally settled in. incredibly fast, no bugs. streamlined theme and easy on the eyes. only thing, i wish it would support multiple tab bars. but so far so good.

with those i think ive contributed about 25 good software programs. i love this post.

I've paid for each major upgrade. It beats the crap out of the dock.

---The main purpose of DragThing is to make items on your Mac such as files, folders, applications, disks, URLs, clippings, and even windows, quickly and easily accessible, while taking up as little space on your screen as possible.

The main elements with which DragThing enables this speedy access are its docks. DragThing’s docks, unlike the Mac OS X system dock, are highly configurable and you can have multiple docks, customised to suit your specific circumstances.

DragThing also allows you to define a huge variety of hot keys. These hot keys can open items in docks, control various other aspects of DragThing and even control the visibility of and switching between other applications running on your Mac.

DragThing can also provide you with a Trash on your desktop, play sounds in response to actions like ejecting a CD, and a lot more besides.

I use it all the time to record music from myspace or kcrw. It records streaming audio and converts it to mp3, aac, flac, and more.

*iserialreader posted above is a good program too.

Here's a few of the apps I've been using lately:

Synergy (iTunes controller in the menu bar, works with growl)

iScrobbler (works with www.last.fm, basically tracks what you play in iTunes and builds charts based on your listening habits)

MenuCalendarClock iCal (good replacement for the basic clock on the menu bar, you can have it show the time or not, but it adds a pulldown type menu to the menu bar that shows this month's calendar and shows your iCal appointments... basically, you'd only have to use iCal to add something)

RapidWeaver (web page editor, while it has a lack of good themes that come free, the cool thing about this program is that you can switch themes on the fly... something iWeb should consider doing.)

Pages (part of the iWork suite, overall it's a good word processor. It's integrated with the iLife suite, you can drag and drop with this too... and something I liked, it has a template for MLA styling which a lot of papers I've had to write had to be in MLA... plus it's cheaper than getting Microsoft Office)

iSerial Reader (when you absolutely, positively don't want to pay for something)

Backup (comes with .Mac, I use it to backup my Home folder to .Mac... it also offers for you to backup you music collection or anything else you don't want to lose to a cd/dvd or an external drive and you tell it when you want to do this by scheduling it.)

Nicecast(very nice internet streaming program that actually uses iTunes)

Transmit (while I don't use this much, it's the best FTP client on the Mac hands down)

Aurora (turns your Mac into an alarm clock, it wakes the Mac from sleep mode at the time you set and it will play any iTunes playlist you tell it to upon waking up)

Colloquy (good IRC client, best feature is that you can set up filters on curtain bots in an IRC room, good for when things are moving way too fast)

Adium (like someone said before, it's iChat on crack... it's the only client at this time to support chat in Yahoo... only downfall is it doesn't offer voice or video... but it's highly customizable.)

Automator (I'm finally getting around to using this... it's very powerful once you figure it out)

Album Art Widget (Dashboard widget that looks up album art for your current song and adds it to your song file tags)

since I just got a Macbook Pro and have been looking for software to put on it.

I'll add some programs to the list:

Delicious Library - A program that will catalog your books, dvds, and cd's by scanning the barcode through the Isight camera. This program has a pretty cool interface, although I would say that it's mostly for nerds like me who like to catalog their collections, and besides people like us it probably isn't too useful for normal people.

Onyx - A system maintenance/optimization program that is kind of like Cocktail, but free.

CoverSutra - very nice iTunes controller. it stays out of the way and works completely off of hotkeys.

Xtorrent - just went final. very nice bittorrent client. Just search for what you want and you'll let a list of items... all you have to do is click download. It'll also search Google and Yahoo in the background as a safe measure.

Shapeshifter - changes the GUI.

Silk - Changes system fonts

Flock - a web 2.0 version of Firefox. There's a very nice Flickr uploader included... which is the main reason I use this.

TextExpander - a small productivity tool that'll take a keyword and make a sentence off of it based on your settings . Not so much that I'd use it for it's initial use, but, someone created a plugin that gives you all of Microsoft Word's list of mispelled words and fixes, so changes come on the fly.

It strips all of the Universal Binary coding out of your programs so that it just leaves the Intel information in it. Conserves a SHITLOAD of space for your computer, it cuts programs like Photoshop down from 350MB to less than 150MB, etc. As a result, Universal apps will run a lot faster.

(Note: Alternate software will only cut your programs down by 10MB or so, so avoid them)

hold apple key, option (alt), and control, and press 8 to change the screen colours negative. useful for reading text that contrasts poorly with the background, like green on black.

hold control and use the scroll wheel to zoom in/out on the cursor

apple key, shift, and 4 will let you take a screen shot, but only of the area you select when the crosshairs come up

if it hasn't already been mentioned, logging in with username 'root' plus your normal password will give you access to all files on the comp

Especially the negative colours.

A very simple one that I'm sure most people are aware of but is worth mentioning if you haven't is F11 which pushes all the windows off screen for you to access the desktop. That's probably the most useful shortkey I know of.

Actually it's cross platform (java) and free, as an enticement for the parent company to check out their proprietory java gui sdk libaries.

Anyway, it's a good tool to help with disk space management on any OS. I know OmniDisksweeper is out there too as far a list views and detail, but JDiskReport has the pretty pie or bar graphs.

Love this app for audio editing. It supports multiple tracks, is more robust than any consumer level app and more intuitive than any pro level app. Also, unlike Bias' Peak, it's universal binary. It's much fast and more stable than Audacity.

i do a lot of basic things on my mac (even though music, torrents, dvds and stuff are something of interest)

I'm was mostly wondering what's good for basic wordprocessing (should i get iworks, is it something else, or is it a way to improve text edit?) what's good for for making newsletters or business cards (i have a business that i run)

i like garageband a lot but should i get logic express??

the say mac are virus free but they also sell norton...do i need virus protection???

just basic software that u use for project or other needs

the mac comes with a lot of stuff out the box, do u have other options?

In response to Reply # 140

it will cause far more problems than it could ever solve
only possible reason to use norton on a mac would be for some high security organization with sensitive info
for hte average user, there's no such thing as a virus on macs

iWorks will cover most of those word processing needs. i thought it came with the mac anyway though? it's like the mac equivalent of Microsoft Office - word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation. lots of templates for making business cards

Text Edit is just a very basic word processor in comparison

don't know about logic

Microsoft Office for mac is quite a good thing to have too

different purposes.
Leap is nice for finding stuff but isn't an app launcher.

spotlight, Launch bar and quicksilver can all find stuff and launch
the applications plus more.

but good look though.

In response to Reply # 0

http://not-salad.net/scribblet/

http://www.tuaw.com/2008/07/03/scribblet-menubar-scratchpad/

I often find myself in need of a the digital equivalent of a scratch pad: just an open text-field to jot down a phone number, save some text for a blog comment, etc. These are not really things I want to save, so I don't want to open a word processor or even use the snippet manager of my choice (Yojimbo). So Scribblet appeals to me in its focus on one basic task. (I've never been a fan of Stickies.)

It's a menubar application that does one simple thing: pop up a small notepad; that's it. It doesn't allow for multiple notes or snippet management. It's simply a scratch pad that pops up with a simple click on the menubar or by hitting a user-definable hotkey. Despite, or rather because of, its simplicity I find it quite handy and it has earned a spot on my menubar.

This is a pretty great resource.

Although I guess somebody could just make a wiki in this day and age.

Matter of fact, and okp wiki would be pretty nuts if it went outside of high tech...

hmm...

1. Which is the best torrent client? I see some say Azureus some say Transmission and some say uTorrent....i used to use uTorrent on my old PC and on my VaderBook i was using Vuze (which i think is Azureus) but i don't think uTorrent is available for Mac's yet or am i wrong?

2. CD/DVD burning software....is Toast the creme de la creme or should i seek alternate software?

it's like this you download a file that references a swarm of seeders that have that file available. you download from the seeders, so instead of one location, you are downloading from several locations and then when you are done you are a seeder or at least you should be it's good manners. the more seeders the faster the download.

did i get that right, players?

some of the stuff on there is essential to me.
some of it aint.

but its a nice little place that consolidates most of the major open source software by category.

i don't know that its been mentioned, but Senuti is a program that allows you to rip music from your ipod to your harddrive, without syncing. the interface is slick too.

any academic/researcher types should take a look at 'Papers' by mekentosj. think iTunes for PDFs - grab publication data for any unnamed pdfs, keep them all 'organized' in Papers' directory, browse using tag data, and it also lets you search ACM, JSTOR, IEEE, Google Scholar etc from inside the program. and save your searches so you can find new releases. and download the papers obviously. plus full screen PDF reading and integrated note-taking. pretty swish.

it's basically a computer tracking thing in case your laptop gets stolen.

You know, we could all be reading a book right now.

I know a couple people mentioned it up top (four years ago), and it's one of the apps that people always bring up when they talk about their favorite apps for OS X, but I never really saw the appeal of it since I was always happy with Spotlight. Last month though I decided to finally download the trial and now that I've had some time to get used to it, it's pretty amazing.

Back when I first heard about it I couldn't really understand how it would save me any time over Spotlight. Eventually though, I found that what Launchbar does really well is allow you to interact quickly and simply with your file system from the keyboard. For example, if I want to email someone a document file I type cmd+space, enter the first few characters to search for the document, press tab, enter the first few characters of the recipient's name and hit Enter. Copying and pasting files, moving files and folders, using iTunes, and tons of other things are just as easy. It also lets you see invisible files and folders and gives you really deep clipboard functionality.

If you've got half an hour or so, just download the trial, open it up and take a look at the Usage Examples link in the sidebar of the help file.

Had the forums in "Most Replied" view for some reason.

Alfred PowerPack for launcher and iTunes controller

TrimEnabler for 3rd Party SSDs

Colloquy for IRC

Transmission for torrents

Automatic for RSS feeds (automated with Transmission for downloads)

Divvy for window management

Growl for notifications (don't know if Mt. Lion's will replace this or not)

Handbrake for video transcoding

ITMS scrubber to erase metadata off your iTunes files in case you want to share your music and get rid of your identifying info

Little Snitch to control programs from dialing out

MPlayer X for videos (Hermi's build is good too)

ScreenFlow for capturing desktop video

XLD for audio transcoding
