I used MSN and Yahoo back in high school for certain people that didn't know about AIM (for whatever reason). I have google talk, but I don't know anybody with it.
I also used Adium before my mac broke, since being on msn or yahoo told me if I had mail.
EVERYBODY has aim tho. Other than automatic email checking, which can be done through other stuff, I see no need for the other jawns.

most of my friends on aim i dont like any of em really aim just makes it easier to connect with the ppl i like to talk to adium also takes away some of the problems that you said u have wit aim it doesnt disconnect as much you can change your smiley set and it looks better

1) the fucking thing in the fucking taskbar doesn't flash when you get a message (I like to use it with no sound so it will just light up when I get a message, for some crazy reason they took it out)
2) away message handling, it's annoying/confusing to put up an away message or save one
and a few other minor things, I'm still loving version 1.5 though

the ROFL laughing icon =)) is something that AIM needs to copy post-haste, as well as a number of other ones. imo that's the only thing holding AIM back from being the best IM service.

such as, easy multi user chats (you just 'invite' someone else), buddy lists stored on the server so it's there no matter what computer you log in with, and the feature to tell you when the other person is typing a message

Yahoo seems to be more reliable to me for video, voice and just plain IMing. There has been several times where I can't log on to AIM. I hate upgrading with AIM because they keep adding more features (ADS) than I need to see. I keep having to change my preferences with AIM.
I like Yahoo's emoticon, the buzz, and animation stuff. You can do so much more on yahoo like customizing it per person versus for everyone. I also like the busy icon and how you can change it. There isn't one advertisement on the window. I can go on....

Yahoo's framerate is so effectively slow, it's useless.
AIM video fullscreen at real life speed with up to 4 party group video chats. Can't beat it. Then again, maybe these are only advantages on a Mac.
