2. "RE: what is really the safest way to store files?" In response to Reply # 0
I backup several ways:
system - Tape (DAT, AIT, or Ditto/QIC), ghost multi CD Audio sessions - Tape (DAT only), CD Samples - CD, Zip100, floppy (depending on the size) midi files - Zip 100, Floppy
I never backup to hard drive for the very reason you had to get another one.

And as long as you have good CD-Rs (or DVD-Rs hopefully), a good burner, and a SAFE place to keep em your backups'll be good for several years...but that media doesn't last anywhere near forever, not even as long as a well-cared-for newspaper.

I've never seen a single hard drive that large personally.

DLT tapes can handle 40GB/80GB compressed and usually cost about $30 each. DLT drives are usually just under $900.
AIT drives cost more ($1000+), I got mine for free when I worked for a local PC recycler. Ripped it out of a Compaq server.
Honestly, your best bet would be DAT (4mm tape) or find an old PC Ditto drive. Get the biggest cap tapes you can find (20GB for DAT, 10 for Ditto/QIC) and do just data backups (ie, mp3's on one tape, flicks on another, etc...)

12. "You could also keep a spare internal IDE drive." In response to Reply # 0
It's been done before, just plugging up the second internal's power dongle and starting back up, then backing up.
Really, IDE drives are pretty good as they go (avoid off-brands), and if you had one you just plugged up occasionally and scandisked from time to time, it would last you a good little while.
Maybe that could be just part of the heightened redundancy plan, that in addition to a tape backup or something. I'm really starting to think about that now that I'm doing actual serious business on my home puter.
