at first i was like...it looks crappy as hell why is it getting such high review marks? the images don't look like it'll be worth anything nor do the videos i've seen. but i was WRONG...DUDE this game is awesome...easily u can get up to 50+ hours of gaming time. (my rule of thumb is not to get any RPG less than 40 hours. Basically each character has at least 5 weapon choices and u can upgrade and learn SOOO many skills. Now personally i vaguely remember this series from my youthdom...but this game..with it's Cel-shading is awesome...the only draw back is the horrible voice acting...all done by british character (i guess it was time to give them some shine). ok..that's all.

And HELL YES it's harder than your average RPG. I've already been wiped out twice, I've had Yangus fall hella times while I run back to town to revive him, and I've done more fleeing in the first 6 hours than I've probably done in all RPGs combined. This game is FUN AS HELL.

So it was really my second time through the dungeon when we squared off. And then the boss of that level wiped me out the first try, cuz I didn't heal up before I grabbed for the crystal.
I'm going strong now, and my party is pretty tough. I'm about to get the 4th character, but I have fucking school work to worry about. Like I really give a shit about the history of the English language when Dhamoulgus is on the loose, but I guess I have to mind my deadlines.

don't waste any skill points on charisma or bows. if you put a lot of points into swords, he can do a lot of damage late in the game if he has the uber falcon blade
just think of him as a healer who occasionally does damage and you'll be ok

Especially since he can use Flame Slash (a sword technique) for free -- it adds about 10 damage to his base attack. The only obnoxious thing is that his HP is about 100 less than my hero. I might go drop 6600g to get him a nice new sword, too, that will bump his attack by about 15.

It's all stuff you get in the 2nd port town you go to, the one in the South that you travel to. The weapon merchat sells a really basic knife which is what you need (I'm pretty certain it's bronze), and you can get the nails by searching something in town. Of course, the Thief's Key has nothing on the Magic Key.
The town where it's all at is "'Something' Quay" I think.

Platform: Playstation 2
In Farebury, go on top of the church (where the bell is located) and get the Thief's Key recipe. On the ship (just after you defeated the sea monster), search around to find the Bronze Knife. Talk to Trode to get the Alchemy Pot. Once you get to Peregrin Quay, go to the Inn and talk to the man with the black hood. He will talk to you about his days as a thief, then give an Iron Nail. Once you have acquired all the items, put those two items (Bronze Knife and Iron Nail) into the Alchemy Pot. Wait a while until it makes the Thief's Key.

I'd been on a role and my party was starting to get really strong (do you ever press "select" and listen to what Trode has to say on the monster screen? He'd been telling me I have an impressive battle record and that monsters might even go extinct at my pace) but then I got to the boss of the Dark Ruins and got worked. It took me 3 tries to get past the boss, but I didn't level up or buy new gear in between or anything. I just finally figured out a strategy that worked. But still -- motherfucker was HARD.

He learns a spell that makes life a lot easier. The healing spring right before you fight to Dhoulmagus and the forest west of the Royal Hunting Grounds are good places to level up.
What I did in the battle was: * The protagonist attacks, never psyches up past 20 * Yangus does Helm Splitter (six points in the Axe skill if you haven't used it) until it's ineffective, then just attacks, never psyching up past 20 * Angelo raises defense * Jessica raises defense or does Oomph/Accelerate * In the first part, focus on the clones
I had a monster team and two rune staffs (from the first casino) for the battle. Focus on the clones first.

I don't know why the hell I skipped right past it at first, but I *just* got into it and you have NO idea how many notorious monsters I've found before this. I mean, I've had like 3-4 gold coins, probably 10 silver coins, and tons of bronze ones, and now I have to find all those monsters again!! ARG!!
Oh well, I am just going around saving up money to buy some nice items, so I guess this will help with that.
And I just crossed my 1000th battle right around hour 40, if anyone wants to compare monster battling pace. (I have like 1007 battles and 948 victories).

I'm about to challenge for monster rank B again, and then I'm going to assemble the super monster teams. The one I have right now *really* helped me in some boss battles. (How the hell did I make it so far without one?)

quick tip...DON'T equip the devil's tail, its a curse.
Dark Robe and Shimmering Dress are the only things i made during the whole game...
For Dark Robe you need a devil's tail, wing of bat, and cloak of evasion.....
Shimmering Dress you need a spangled dress, gold bracer, and a ruby of protection
i rarely sell shit...b/c you never know...unless you're like me and just start selling shit with a rampage to get top of the line shit for the final boss...

Because i was finding treasure chests in caves and stuff. And that was enough to get me buy. Angelo and my Hero could heal and resurrect people so thats all I needed for that.
Found decent items in castles and caves that got me by. Only time i bought hard was the final boss. I put it all on teh line then.

You're about half done. The real game don't begin until the bonus dungeon.
Make a timbrel of tension, if you haven't already. I found it incredibly useful. I don't remember exactly what you use, the sun crown and something else.

Thought I'd give this game a go. About time too, I've had this since release (got it for the FFXII demo), never played it until now. Colourful cell-shaded visuals & cute monsters, this game's gotta be easy and relaxing right? WRONG. I couldn't even beat the boss in the very first dungeon of the game. Damn thing just wouldn't die, while I gotta use medicine to heal pretty much every turn. I like how you get to keep all your items & EXP after being wiped out. Even though you lose half of your money, I think it's a fair tradeoff, and EXP might be more important anyway. It's annoying how you can't save anywhere except the church though, if the power goes out you could potentially lose A LOT of progress.

I'm now about 50% through the main game, and all speech thus far has been text-based, even in cutscenes. So I assume there won't be any recorded voices.
All the music I've heard so far is identical, though.
