"Street Fighter 6"

teaser dropped this weekend.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJeSwc3Kamw

all I can say so far:

- I'm glad the series is continuing with a main game (I have 980 hours on my Steam copy of SFV, but haven't played it consistently in two years)

- they better be working on a better logo; it looks like a shitty generic eSports badge

I haven't tried with the PS5 controller, but I couldn't get the feel of SFV with the DualShock controller at all. I couldn't do any move I could normally do on Xbox.

That game at launch felt like something only for eSports gamers and hardcore tourney heads, with little to no single player options for a while. I kept up on the upgrades as they trickled down, but V never sat with me like IV did.

I don't think the divide was as big as players going from II to III, but the divide was definitely felt.

I haven't played SFV in a while either. Strive is collecting dust. I hate getting bodied but I don't have enough time to lab and shit like that anymore.

It better have proper rollback though.

i play strive 4-5 hours a week, rarely labbing proper, just practicing combos while i wait for matches. i am getting by just fine in the park (unranked). however i don't have the patience to grind celestial. that is truly a frustrating process. for now i am good with being "stuck" on rank 10 and occasionally finding really good matchups in the park where we play 10-20 matches. i plan on entering NLBC strive tournament one of these days while i am still within the specified region

Strive is so beautiful. But I barely have/take the time to dig into it. And I can't make myself take the time to learn anyone other than Potemkin and a lazy/bad Leo.

And I stopped trying to get to Celestial pretty fast when it became clear that people were running scared on Floor 10. AKA folks were trying to cherry pick, run from matchups, etcetera.

So if I had a winning streak going? No one would fight me for a loooooong time. And hell, if someone was actually willing to fight me, I just assumed they were fully prepared to play in the most 'foot on the ropes/hand full of tights' way possible and either kill me dead with the repeat mixup until it works style or the get a life lead then run like a bitch for the rest of the round to win via timeout.

I'm too straight up for all of that shit. If I'm playing a game, I'm playing a game and I ain't hardly trying to run from anyone. If I win, cool. If I lose, cool. If I play you and I didn't enjoy it cuz setplay and/or running, I probably won't rematch. But not playing someone cuz of a character or win streak? Man, forget all of that. If I'm doing that, then I probably shouldn't be playing the game.

ranked in fighting games always sucks. always some folks cheesing or playing lame to protect/inflate their rank and they are unavoidable. i only play ranked to get up to a certain level so i get matched with better players

Yeah. I peek in here and there on it. And I eventually buy the characters, but the days of me putting in lots of time on SFV are long gone. Between this and Strive, I'll get back in sometime in the spring. My next thing to try is NBA2k22, my first 2k in a really long time. I'm going to find some sliders and then try to get to it!

Oddly enough, the game I keep going back to is Enter The Gungeon. I tried a little EXIT the Gungeon too. EtG is 1 hour in and out and still a blast for me to play while I'm listening to something else. And I don't always play with Gunslinger/Lich either. I've been enjoying Paradox quite a bit too. I'm not at 100% yet. I don't know if I'll get all the way there, but I'm going for it!

I’ll play three or four big single player games a year, but for the most part if I turn my console on it’s for SF.

I’m fine with this. I ain’t played 2K since like 2016. I don’t play shooters past the first month. I dabble in other fighting games. I only got time to really go in on one thing, and I’ve decided SF my one thing.

It appears the full cast was leaked as well. I'm assuming Capcom wasn't behind the full leakage since I imagine the full cast won't be available when the game launches, especially not for free. I can't see Capcom forgoing that sweet DLC money.

It also appears as if there will be single player action this go around based on the small snippets of a main character walking around what looks like Final Fight's Metro City. That might sucked a non-serious fighting game player such as myself in. That and the fact that I also saw online that simplistic non-motion based commands are going to be added to the game.

Seems like Capcom will hardcore into revamping Street Fighter. I hope the netcode will be up to snuff with all the added stuff that's packed in.

SFI - Meh
SFII - Great
SFIII = Meh, except to the hardcore
SFIV - Great
SFV - Hard sell (though nowhere near as bad as ST5. That's the Bruno of the film series)
SFVI - ???

I do hope they put something in for single player, but I'm not sure I want that to be a lightly skinned Final Fight either. I'm sure I'll buy it, and sure I'll upgrade at least 2 of my fightsticks to work (I have a wireless Happ based PS4/PS3 stick in the works that I've got to get the PS5 add on for. My Sanwa/Seimitsu sticks will wait for the next wave of PCBs to drop).

It’ll probably have a buttery ass high framerate option.

Max settings running at 120fps I bet this shit looks NUTS.

Not that I’ll ever know, I’ll be on PS5. I just hope there’s full crossplay with all the systems.

a monitor with no latency makes so much difference.

Part of the reason I stopped playing was because I thought I was too old to confirm Ken's cr.MK into SRK on reaction. On this monitor I can do it pretty consistently.

I can't check dashes as much as I want but I'm sure I'd be able to on PC

Interesting how much work Capcom is putting into SFVI. I wonder what made the Capcom devs so humble. Now I won't feel so bad for wanting to look at the full roster with more attention.

I did notice that Dee Jay was one of the characters in the main roster. Sucks that he's a charge character, but I suppose I'll have to pick up that game for certain to play with my fellow countryman despite the fact I stink in playing fighting games.

People forget (or don’t know) that Dee Jay is actually top tier in Super Turbo. He’s mad fun, and I was also somebody who avoided charge characters until very recently.

He’s on my shortlist of potential mains for SF6, along with Lil Kim.

it's a little janky. i'm sure they will figure it out. SFV looked awful before it released and ended up being a great product. i do like the utility of the drive gauge. people keep saying "focus attacks are back" but it looks more like blitz from guilty gear xrd rev2 to me. SFV became (relatively) wild after a slow start. hopefully SFVI starts off a little more wild than SFV did so it can go to crazier places in the future

it looks a little less janky and stiff, if I'm interpreting what you typed correctly. I believe some of the movement for SF6 is motion captured and not just completely animated, so you are correct with the NRS comparison.

The number of mechanics I'm seeing in the recent gameplay footage is pretty interesting. Pretty cool how defense will be rewarded in SF6. Should make for some hype tournament moments for sure.

I fell off paying attention to SFV during the pandemic when everything went online. Also hype that it's coming to more platforms since I mostly play on Xbox these days.

It is wild playing a SF without crush counters. It is EASY to forget that its not 100% big money damage time when someone whiffs a yolo SRK.

As always, I'm excited for what SF6 is going to have. It looks like they've made some strong decisions about what they want the game to be so far. It is just a matter of how the characters mix in with it.

And I'm interested in what kind of story they're going to put together too: old Ryu, broke Ken, where is the evil folks?, what about G? All of that stuff.

I applied (PS5) but I'm not optimistic. We'll see!

And I'm never great at these games (I don't put the time in and my twitch is declining), but I always get hype for them. 3 hit when I was in college and they didn't get the console releases in a timely manner. But I still had an arcade nearby where I could play it a little bit.

I bought 4 pretty fast and put hella hours on it. I sat 5 down a bunch of different times but still enjoyed it overall.

6 looks pretty lovely. And they got me with 'broke Ken' and wondering what these new villains are gonna be up to. And it looks like they took offense to talk that their characters don't have enough tools so some of these characters appear to have a lot of stuff going for them. I'm interested for sure.

Boo. Not sure what the hell Capcom was doing with the invites. I put in for and got it. I was shocked. Ps5.

I’m trying to do some justice to it. It’s pretty damn gorgeous to look at for sure. And the ‘tone’ of the game is dark in a good way. I’m excited to see some of the confirmed characters in this. I’m guessing Akuma is finna be out of hand on this.

Early on, you can’t be on the scene just throwing out shit or you’re gonna get your broth seasoned. I think people have been playing games where a bunch of stuff is plus on block. I was going to town on some people for a while…people were playing footsies with sweeps.

The lobby setup is pretty good, it’s easy to roll up and spectate, and if you and someone get a good set going, you can just keep on fighting. Imagine that!

When you hit someone, it HITS. Fierce and roundhouses especially.

The different level specials are interesting too.

Drive Meter seems like a good time. And when someone goes into burnout mode, the heat is on their azzes fo sho!

Im playing with broke ass/fugitive Ken so far. He’s a good familiar time of course. And they made sure he didn’t look goofy this time. I need to jump to Ryu for a while then get to Kimberly. She seems like a fun mix of Guy, Claw, and maybe a couple of others.

And duh, Guile is still Guile. You’re not doing any yolo shit against a devoted Guile. He hits like a truck too so you don’t have to fuck around for a long time to find out.

My 25-year ago Ken would've been no match for whatever you were bringing I'm sure!

It took me like a day to remember that Ken's run extends combos. And even by Sunday night, there was still some good combos that I couldn't make myself even try to pull off. I didn't start ducking into emptier surveys to try to hit the lab for a good while.

I gave a few people the biz with my Street Fighter 101 shit tho! I got the biz from pretty much every Guile I dealt with. I just wasn't getting enough damage when I would get in. And Guile, like always, is THE yolo punisher.

Overall though, I REALLY like how SF6 'feels' in that beta. Its like a bonkers mix of SF3 and SF4 in the best ways. And really, it seems like you've gotta DO SOMETHING or you're gonna get waxed by the whole cast cuz everyone can do you in something dirty it seems. That's fun.

I wanted to play Kimberly but I didn't wanna spend what time I had left in training mode all day so I went with Ken. I was having a blast. Buttons are easier to whiff punish, drive impact keeps things interesting, and the drive gauge is a dope ass mechanic.

SF 101 got me to Diamond rank and I was barely using the SF6 stuff. The most I did on Saturday evening was be mindful of our drive gauges. People would spend all their gauge early in the match and I'd just make them pay for it. Developing strats around the gauge is gonna be fun as shit.

I didn't really start using the SF6 mechanics until Sunday. Drive Impact was annoying at first but by the second day my reactions were getting better so I was able to start punishing them. Whiff punishing a button then going into parry rush into a fat ass combo into corner carry is mad satisfying.

My last game of the beta I was trying out some shit in training mode against a Ken player and he was up 4-0. I got sick of losing and started playing for real.

Ran 6 straight on him right before the beta shut down. Hold that shit till next year fam.

I'm interested in seeing how grapplers work in SF6. I wanna play Manon and go back to my Abel roots but I like having a DP and a fireball.

I couldn't make myself do parry rush with any kind of consistency. It was too fast for me to do it and know what to expect.

And yes, I'm very interested in how the hosses will work in this game. I'm guessing that people who try to roll up with rushdowns with holes are gonna get their meats totally lumped.

I love Drive Impact. I too got to the point where I could bait it, react to it, and of course, punish the shit out it. And even better, I could program people to be scared to do it. Which of course means I get to use it too.

prefer a mid-range neutral character with a little rushdown and setplay like kolin in SFV or ky in strive. my interest in SF6 grows with each video i watch but can't seem to locate a character that "fits my hands." we'll see what happens with DLC chars, or maybe i'm overlooking someone very obviously suited to my playstyle. will stick with strive for now, and the new granblue release whenever it comes out

Luckily, I was in the closed betas so I didn't have to do none of that.

I only had to change my controls back to classic. I did one fight with Modern controls by accident with Luke (I was rolling with Ken or Jamie) because I didn't realize that my settings weren't right. I took a powerful asswhoopin.

My barely there Jamie took a ugly mirror match beatdown late last night too! It was good to see him in better hands tho..he's gonna be pretty fun.

I'm ready for the whole thing to come out so I can roll up on one of the bigs. I'm excited and I think it is going to go well.

In talented hands. She seems diabolical.

It is cool when the new characters seem like they have something to offer.

Six feels like Capcom trying to do SF3 again but do it in a way where it works better out of the gate: new characters taking up lots of space for example. They even gave people Luke at the end of SF5 to make sure people had a chance to know some stuff was coming. BUT THIS TIME, they also made sure to get all of the OG 8 on the scene right out of the gate. And people BE loving on Cammy so they were wise to get her in early too. Throw in a jazzed up Dee Jay AND basically THawk's kid and its a party. Now people can sit back and wait on Fei Long (and Akuma).

I bought the $85 package here.

Playing World Tour mainly because I'm really rusty...like to the point I've unlocked Ken as a mentor and am struggling to reliably bust out HIS moves...and it's a slow burn, but they definitely managed to wedge character progression into a Street Fighter game. It doesn't live up to the potential Yakuza vibes of the previews, but it is fairly silly. Edit: and depending on how deep you're into the series, it has plenty of fun references the deeper you go. They even seem to call out the mainstream fans like me that pretty much only play II and IV sometimes...one very minor side character specifically tells you to Google them, lol.

Also, I'm starting to see hints of some of the gameplay charm of Tekken 3's old story mode. The first time I had to take the train across town, just after learning L1 and R1 added different effects to my attacks, was a real fun time.

I really don't remember special attacks being this finnicky on a regular Dualshock in SFIV though. I've also used Chun-Li and the Roman gal and I feel like any special I pull out is mostly luck. I wish Sakura were back, she was my favorite back when I still had friends in town who'd come over to do couch marathons. It'll be a while before I dig into the actual characters I think, but it seems like Manon might be sort of what I'm looking for in this one?

Since the weekly challenge was doing cabinet matches I gave actual Ken a shot and had much better luck putting out what I wanted (though I’m still hella mashy of course) and now that my WT character is lvl 23 with Ken ranked up to 11 he seems to be having a better go also.

One thing that’s frustrating though is that I definitely have controls set to classic in WT but R1 is still parry instead of a heavy, which makes it really hard to switch between WT and regular fights. I’m not sure what’s going on there.

You have to set controls for P1, P2 AND Avatar to have universal Classic across battle hub and WT. Points for intricacy/nuance I guess, but man...

I think I love the idea of allowing Classic vs. Modern in unranked fights, because for someone like me that only knows the old ways but accidentally burned the tomes (and was never that good to begin with) so long as you note the control mode early and catch what the other person is going for, it encourages more thoughtful play really quickly.

I've never thought about blocking/parrying, let alone even spacing, as much as some of these matches force me to. And to their credit, at least this early in the game (always a caveat with fighters these days, especially one like SF approaching MK levels of popularity) Classic definitely has the edge on Modern so long as Classic reads Modern and develops a gameplan.

Very cool game, holy shit!

I still hate when I see that 'M' cuz its almost always gonna be a Luke or Gief and their easy input shenanigans. Especially Gief.

I started with Manon and I'm still on that. Haha! I didn't know she was gonna be upper level. I just knew she had a harsh anti-air, some LONG pokes, and a little throw drama for turtling people. She can still get rushed down and jabbed to death so I don't buy that she's totally busted. I had some Kimberly player wax me something fierce..actually good Kens too. But most of the tomfoolery folks? Manon has some tools for them. IE: it took me 2 fights to figure out how to deal with a Blanka. Once I saw it work, I got hella comfortable.

I dealt with an AGGRESSIVE Guile over the weekend who sank my battleship. It was great to see what a not full of shit Guile could do.

Also and in closing, fuck Dee Jay. Haha.

Need to upgrade one or 2 of my fight sticks to properly work on PS5, as I haven't played on a pad for ages. There's the typical run on parts that supply chain issued didn't help, but I'll be good to go soon enough.

FOMO and the great demo made me mad I didn't pre-order. And it was out everywhere. I ended up getting there last PS4 copy at GameStop. Got a deluxe.

This game is incredible so far. Biggest gripe I have is that is so hard to search for friends.

what do y'all think about:

• drive gauge
• game balance
• your main
• presentation
• world tour mode
• netcode

still haven't picked this up. still waiting for a character that grabs me. a.k.i. could be interesting. maybe kolin comes back and i get pulled in. watching online tourneys here and there. i see folks blowing through their drive gauge without any fear of burnout state, and not even on combos that kill. is there less neutral compared to previous games? seems like drive gauge cancels embolden players and rushdown is the order of the day after some flirty footsies

I'm stuck right around 3 stars platinum. And that area in ranked is not all that fun. There's a sad mix of bad players who have basically
ONE setplay/routine they repeat over and over and some people who are...how do I sayyyyy...straight up bitches. Every now and again, you can find a match that is both fun and challenging, but its too rare at the level I'm stuck at now.

My main is currently Manon. As soon as I saw her character design, I wanted to try her. I had no idea that she'd be as 'high end' as she was. But really, if the opponent stays on the ground and milks drive gauge a certain way, she's not all that difficult to deal with for real at mid-levels. I'm thinking of taking up a pocket Ryu. Or a Honda. Maybe even Kimberly even though she sure does seem to die pretty fast.

I'm currently HORRIBLE at incorporating drive rush into my approaches/offense in general. I miss out on damage that way ALL THE TIME.

And yes...some people be mindlessly throwing out Drive rushes and finding shady ways out of it. Drive rushes --> lazy fishing normal --> into drive impact = the devil with certain characters. I hate it with a passion. And some people's entire offense is based on milking that.

I'm trying to parry more too but its kinda not great unless you perfect parry.

The game is casually gorgeous to me. I hate that the 'walking through the place' pre-fight thing isn't part of the ranked fights. I love the music. I love the characters all having their own little cool parts of the intro. And don't start me on when the 2 characters have specific interactions. I'm a sucker for all of that stuff.

World Tour is whatever...I tried to bother with it at first but now I hop on, do way too little labbing, then I jump into ranked to see if I can find a few decent fights in ranked. It is fine for what it is but it is a slog. You CAN create some impressively broken fighters if you use your mind in the dirtiest way possible while doing the creation.

Netcode is mostly good. They DO need to do something about people disconnecting right before they lose. It happens far too often and no game should let that slide in this day and age. Unless I'm doing something wrong, you can't easily go in and block them after they disconnect on you.

Other notes:

Yes, offense and shenanigan setups are big business on this game. If you don't like that in your fighting games, SF6 will drive you crazy...especially as you're getting started. And it is basically the whole cast who can mow you down like nobody's business if you don't know the setups. You can't just sit back and try to block or you're very dead. Even the typical Guile 'hide and sonic boom' tomfoolery has to be escalated or that style isn't really gonna work for long.

Sad as it is, I enjoy fighting Dhalsim a lot. Its shady bullcrap pretty much the whole time but a decent Dhalsim forces me to fight to get in and I feel really good IF I finally do.

I'm more accustomed to Dee Jay but still...no luv for him and his shenanigans. Also, I'm not so in love with fighting against Ken and Ryu makes me hate the game all the way around, but that's normal for me on every game.

just caught the SF6 top six (no more top eight? I don't mind the format but shows how long I've stopped checking the FGC) and was entertained, despite knowing next to nothing about the game's mechanics

always lovely to see the power of Ken in the hands of a master, this time AngryBird embracing the inherent retardation of the character with the balance of calculated execution

I thought Punk might finally take EVO in SF but alas, another year passes and the USA remains free in the biggest fighting game franchise every created

Sometimes, the threat of something is far more of a big deal than an opponent actually doing the something. The easy and brutal confirm and convert combos that some of the characters have are bonkers for a SF game. You can start thinking you're playing GG Strive or a tag game up in there sometimes.

And don't start me on Marissa. At all. If she gets you, you can go from early round to basically dead in no time on some Tekken bounce and juggle all over the stage shit.

I'm kinda over my Dee Jay disdain after seeing that MOST of his shenanigans have reasonable counters once you know them. I always love when one knows they've been figured out. You can see them freeze and not know what else to try. Usually, its gonna be shimmy then cheap sliding kick. If I perfect parry it, I feel their mental battleship sinking in disbelief. Its adorable stuff really. But hey, sometimes a Dee Jay still gets me with the bullshit.

But yeah..right now, most of the complaining from the real SF6 players who are way better than me is about Ken and Cammy. Ken is a corner carry king with hella convertible stuff that HURTS. And Cammy...well..is Cammy. Absurdly safe but dangerous normals, ignorant damage, and she's FAST. Like Chun-Li without most of the difficulty and again...GTFOH damage it seems.

As a fellow "charge? as in, like, a bull rush?" SF guy dating back to SF2T it's novel to play as Guile and actually do something beyond the iconic jab. While I got pulled away from the game about a month after it came out so I have no idea how Classic vs. Modern has shaken out online, I remember this was a big part of that debate, whether charge characters might be too accessible to button mashers.

Luckily there happens to be maintenance scheduled tonight so I can only play World Tour and Arcade.

I kinda fell off World Tour right before the second tournament, for me as a low-mid skilled guy it just seemed like too many of the fights were boiling down to "damn, how would I have possibly won that without all those health items?" and it kinda sapped the energy out of the room for me.

But I was also pretty married to Ryu and Ken's movesets just because they're the core of the game, so coming back I wanted to finally put some time into Lily. Sakura was my favorite in SFIV (the last SF I played anything like regular) and Lily seems the most like her, with the added benefit that her moves are the same inputs as what I'm used to.

Plus she's my kinda gal. Feels bad when I suck and she gets all bruised up compared to how everybody else mostly just collects dirt on their clothes.

Plus I realized I bought the character pack, apparently, so I may as well finish World Tour and at least see through each character's arcade mode story arc. A.K.I. seems like she's for freaks and I'll be interested to see how Akuma turns out.
