"guilty gear strive (ps4, ps5, PC) | open beta feb 18-21"
Tue Feb-09-21 04:05 AM by bearfield

https://www.guiltygear.com/ggst/en/news/obt/

beta runs feb 18 - 21 on PSN. no PS+ required. it starts on the 17th if you preorder. this beta is very promising. it has tutorial and training modes, local versus and versus CPU modes, 13 characters playable (no anji), and network play featuring their rollback code that was developed in-house. even if the rollback netcode is not good it should at least be usable, which is more than can be said for the netcode in the last beta

with this beta approaching we're finally getting some more footage of the game in action. it looks good. it seems very neutral heavy which is a welcome change from the oppressive oki of the xrd series. they got rid of some legacy guilty gear stuff but there is still a lot of guilty gear in this game: anti-air conversions into P juggle into super, lots of roman cancelling, dust combos, fishing for random hits and converting into massive damage, dragon installs. i believe that blitz is gone. i didn't see any just frame blocking but i think that property was absorbed into faultless defense. check out some matches:

axl vs ramlethal - https://youtu.be/El0N-CwImF8
ky kiske vs giovanna - https://youtu.be/IEOuqGjM6-I
sol badguy vs nagoriyuki - https://youtu.be/tSaNhmTYONI

from what i can gather her whole thing is letting players ignore meter management. if you don't spend meter with her then she does more damage and maybe has more moves. she's supposed to be a beginner-beginner type of character. i think you could pick up millia since you're a laura main. both millia and laura are all about getting that knockdown and setting up your oki. millia even has a meterless dash/side switch like laura

that said there is no wrong or right way to approach this game. whatever you think is going to work for you is the best course of action

She hasn’t really been a character I’ve gravitated toward in previous GGs, but I’ll see how she plays in Strive.

Saw the starter guide for Giovanna and she not only looks basic, which I dig, but maybe a bit under equipped for a Guilty Gear game, which I don’t dig.

this is functionally the beginning of the meta. no tiers have been defined. it's a hard reset of the series. who knows which character actually works in this new set of rules. going with the character that has the most appealing playstyle or design is as good a reason as any. that's how i picked ramlethal in xrd; she played like a guest character due to her weird target combo juggles and i thought she looked cool

maybe giovanna has been designed for onboarding and will make for a better transition for new players. she might not be under-equipped because of universal mechanics like roman cancel and faultless defense. i will say that the thing that makes her unique is the lack of a unique mechanic or play style. millia has her airdash oki, axl is the zoner, ram has her shooting swords, faust has random item toss, nagoriyuki has blood gauge, etc. giovanna has at best a passive buff which isn't very guilty gear

I’m gonna stick with Gio for the beta. She has some safe mix-up, tick throw pressure, dash cancels, high damage, and crazy corner carry. She feels like home.

That blood meter shit looks rough on Nago. It's looking like if you can't kill your opponent in a combo then don't even bother doing it. Once combo will send you into blood rage basically.

I'm sticking with him fuck it. I'm sure we'll see better strats with him once the game has it's legs under it.

this is still very much guilty gear. you now have to charge dust (D) to launch. throws are no longer instant startup but they still look pretty fast. dead angle (alpha counter) was merged into roman cancel (yellow). this makes sense as dead angle used 50% tension anyway. they also added instant block to faultless defense

the rollout for this *beta* has been phenomenal. i hope this sets a bar that other fighting games want to clear

The mechanics in this game are fucking dope. The defence system opens up a bunch of different punishes. Got me looking at Nago a lot better now. I have to go back and watch some matches because I don't think a lot of people were utilizing all of these.

What's the window like for faultless defence in other GG games? Like 3S parry?

all the matches i played were on US east and US west and they almost uniformly felt good to great. i can only recall one match that was iffy but it was still very playable. will try matches on overseas servers tonight

i need way more time with the game to accurately assess it but so far i like it a lot. the damage is probably still too high. most matches are about 30-40 seconds, which is pretty short. the presentation is astounding. ramlethal looks and animates like a character from a miyazaki film. stages are brimming with detail. sometimes it's a little busy and i can't quite make sense of the action, especially in the corner with ramlethal's swords and with chipp and millia pressure. the GUI fonts for combo count, meter names, character names, and battle notifications (just frame, counter, punish) are all different in a way that makes the design feel incongruous. hopefully they settle on something uniform that ties the rest of the presentation together

it's weird going from one game to the next iteration and the character you're using has far fewer moves than in the previous game. not even a pre-patch times balance change kind of thing where one move was removed or altered but a fundamental reset of the character. my muscle memory keeps betraying me because i want to throw ramlethal's fireball (gone), pull off her tekken dial-a-combo style P and K blockstrings and juggles (gone), use her command throw (gone), launch into juggle state off of normal dauro (gone), juggle with giant 2S and 2HS (gone)... she lost a lot of good tools. her neutral is strong though and it seems like footsies is a viable play style in strive. they did keep the sprit of her gameplay, which previously was full-screen corner carry via long juggling combos into countless long form corner mixups and combos. it's just less complicated to pull it off now, although you do have to spend meter for red roman cancel to get the really long corner carry combos. however having to use red RC at the correct time in the hitstun and then carefully positioning for the follow up juggle during the slowdown is interesting and challenging. her corner pressure is different but still seems strong, although corner pressure in general has been nerfed due to wall break. i think i like this change because corner pressure in xrd was pretty tough to deal with

I think were friends on PSN but if not shoot me a request. LegendXavier. I need all the reps I can get because I haven't played any fighters at all since the first year of DBZ. I'll definitely be on Friday and some of Saturday. not sure how much Sunday

edit: wtf happened in the story since AC??? none of my big favorites are in this. Testament!!!! Jam, Slayer. at least Ky is never going anywhere

I'm not a fan of the play style of this game. Not much at all. However, ASW has done an excellent job with this netcode. To be honest, it's probably the best I've ever played. I want to support them with this game, but I don't think I would ever play it.

It's cool, but it's not my type of fighting game. And as a fan of fighting games, I don't need another game that I won't play. I haven't touched Dragonball FighterZ in forever, and as much as love Samurai Shodown, the netcode is complete garbage and that makes the game near unplayable. So I go back to SFV, which isn't perfect, but it's just average enough to be the game that I go back to most.

I've played the beta, but I don't know what to do. It's great, and I support it, but I don't think I can purchase it.

You're such pests...now, what is it you want? In your depths of your ignorance, what is it you want? Well, whatever it is you want, I can't deliver because I just don't see it. - Orson Welles

this is to be expected from a new game. stuff is going to be busted and over/under-cooked. i feel like the base is pretty solid but it's a little unreadable and inconsistent at times. even though this game was designed to be "simplified" and appealing to new players the roman cancelling in this game is extremely complicated and kind of a barrier to entry, at least for somewhat high level play. maybe this game is amazing in a few seasons after several balance patches. the netcode is indeed incredible, easily the best i've experienced in a modern fighting game. i might not play it often after it releases but i feel like i have to purchase it if only to support a japanese dev releasing a game with amazing netcode

It's pretty obvious that Strive will get to be a great game, but it's got a lot of work to do. I think that because they did lot of work on the netcode, they will get a bit of a pass on some of the other shortcomings, as well they should because the online is awesome. We've seen the results of it as well, with SNK saying they are working on rollback for KOF15 (I can't do another online game with that POS netcode in Sam Sho).

But I think I may purchase it eventually, but I don't know if there is a rush to do so. ASW has earned my support.

You're such pests...now, what is it you want? In your depths of your ignorance, what is it you want? Well, whatever it is you want, I can't deliver because I just don't see it. - Orson Welles

but 50% of the reason I'm buying GG Strive is to put money in their pocket for implementing rollback. The other is because of Nagoriyuki not gonna lie.

Hopefully this makes a bunch of money and rollback becomes the standard.

Haha. He mopped me 3 or 4 times before I started looking around online like 'is it just me or is dude wild cheap and broken?'. I was so relieved to find out that it wasn't just me!

I'm just getting started with GG so I DO have a long way to go. But I was rolling pretty good until I got to him on my 2nd arcade run.

He beat me like 10 times and I won ONE round. It ended my first night of GG. I'll be back but at least I know now.

so much variety and so many options. this feels like a game where you learn the theory of specific components of combos then apply them situationally for optimal damage and oki. this is opposed to something like SFV which has very limited combo routing for most characters

gotta say this seems like a unique and intuitive way for a character's moveset to line up with the input commands. design of the character is super guilty gear as well

This game looks amazing. I've bought it but I haven't jumped into it yet. Just from watching some videooooooos, I expect to be enamored and locked in if I can just get my feet on the ground/figure out who I want to play with. I can see veering towards some zone person if not a big character who can do DAMAGE on punishes, but I don't know if the game is simple enough for my old SF4 Gouken tricks to work! Haha.

that's an intoxicating combo. since both players can usually cancel any action offensively (red and purple roman cancel) or cancel the opponent's offensive action (yellow roman cancel and burst) nothing is "set" (like SFV v-trigger activation or SFIV FADC timings) or taken for granted so you have to be on your toes all the time

and this game is still incredibly technical. they upped the damage and nerfed gatling combos but all the just frame stuff and high level decision making is still in there. wakeup reversal timing is very strict. character weight is still present (combos that work on a heavy character won't work on a light character.) combo timing can get down to 1-2 frames. it is a hard game sometimes

sounds like nago is your man. GIANT buttons, huge damage, and a lot of risky rushdown. early returns on him from the beta were not promising but folks have started to unlock him and he is a real problem in the hands of a capable player

Potemkin feels like Gief if someone at capcom REALLY FUCKING LOVED Gief and was left alone to make design choices. Wow.

But I’m telling you right now, Nag on extreme on arcade mode is a mark ass trick with his constant rage without losing life and other shady snk boss absurdity on his side. I started playing with him before trying Pote so I get how things can go wrong with him. And the computer just cancels all of his issues with him as the boss on extreme. Lame as hell.

not particularly viable as no one is getting hit by 6H in the corner but it does show off his damage potential off one hit. this is nothing compared to what actual good players and lab monsters are doing with goldlewis. he seems legit. buttons kind of suck but behemoth typhoon is really versatile and malleable. 2P combos into sideswitch and fast startup BTs so he can get going off a quick button. i was bouncing around FGC personality streams when he dropped last night and it was fun to watch the new character discovery and experimentation process happen in real time

NO NEED FOR MODERATION!

I don't even know if that's what he says, but it is a BLAST to get someone with it..especially a raw one. My first one was raw against a Millia who was spamming the same mixup over and over. I was amazingly pleased to slang that buster on her!

Besides that, fuck Sol and his 'everything seems safe' azz.

Also, I can't beat a Zato in a set to save my life. I can't deal with the Eddie-assisted mixup shenanigans AT ALL. Once I get jammed up, I lose absurd amounts of life in a short period of time and it makes me big sad/mad. I'll figure it out at some point!

I went into the Japan lobby last night and got touched up by a May before the connection went wonky.

Mostly, I really need to figure out how to lab against certain things. The computer is obviously incapable of playing the game like a human so that just doesn't give me the reps I need. More than anything, it seems like the computer doesn't use meter well. And they allow way too many 'walk up' busters. I didn't get a regular buster on someone until day 3 (I cornered a Zato and won a match with it...still lost the set tho!).

I'm on the 8th floor after a few days of playing online. I don't feel outclassed per se, but I have run into a few folks who play GG like 'do a safe-seeming mix-up that I have practiced for 2 weeks, run away for 5 seconds, repeat'. I'm not good enough to keep good pressure and solid punishes on that style just yet. But I'm getting there!

Fuck Millia Rage early on since we’re here. Every hit I take against one feels like I’m getting screwed in some way. And she’s the thing I was hoping I wouldn’t be faced with having Potemkin..The whole dial a shitty mixup into your entire offense stuff. Noob problems I guess.

apparently there are some mistranslations in the EN notes so some stuff might be inaccurate. seems good overall; universal changes look to be more buff than nerf

nerfs
• damage from OP specials or combo starters
• pressure — looks like abare was buffed and faultless defense was definitely buffed
• guard crush

buffs
• server connection on startup 😎
• throw teching
• universal anti-air (6P)
• special inputs
• reversals
• projectiles — ky's grounded stun edge might be usable!
• fautless defense
• burst
• roman cancel
• air combos — gatlings, dash cancels, and counter hits added to some jump buttons
• counter hit combos
• combos started from RC

It feels faster. That is for sure. And I haven't seen much that has made me feel like throws are less amazing/techable, but maybe I haven't put enough time on it.

ps4/ps5/pc cross play announced at the end of arcrevo america today. they didn't provide a date. this is a great addition and should really expand the playerbase since there should be more matches available at any given moment. i wonder if this means they will normalize the input lag on all systems. my understanding is that ps4 has awful input lag and PC has the least. hopefully they fix the issue that causes in-match lag due to low end pc's not being able to handle the more complex visual effects like dragon install

great time to get your hands on the game if you've been curious but reluctant to commit. most likely a ton of new players trying to figure out the game in the beta so now is as good a time as any to hop in and have a high chance of matching up with similarly skilled players. all characters — including DLC characters — available to play in the beta. if you want to run some low intensity player matches i will be on as CT_5_Holy

trailer from asw: https://youtu.be/nWrkvCU-zhQ
extended gameplay from gamespot: https://youtu.be/4u-k0TItt4U

they are really getting crazy with the character-specific mechanics. looks like he has some kind of mix between item toss character randomness and a slotted spell system. use a spell and it gets replaced by another (random?) one. seems like a spammy zoner like dizzy from previous entries. there is also something with that blue field around his life bar but i'm not sure what it does

----------------

anyone playing or interested in learning hit me up in my inbox, on steam (bearfield), or in-game (CT_5_Holy). game is super healthy even with the network issues so i'm not desperate for a sparring partner but i do like to teach folks stuff and/or provide a good learning environment. this game looks way more intimidating than it actually is. hardest part is the roman cancels and they become second nature over time
