"Coronavirus gaming list"
Fri Mar-20-20 05:29 PM by L_O_Quent

Stuck at the crib and trying to figure out what all this extra time will be spent on why not list what you've gotta finish of the games you already have let us know when good games are on sale?

I just picked up Enter The Gungeon (yeah I know Exit came out but I need to finish the first) for super cheap on the Switch even though I have it on my Xbox. Just got NBA 2K20 on Game Pass so I've been playing that lately but am going to go through my list of games I need to finished (am stuck on Hollow Knight still) soon.

Hope you all are staying safe!

The offspring :-D

Final Fantasy XII -- absolutely loved it when it came out and trying to get back into it. the beginning is slow, so hopefully it picks up for me soon.

Resident Evil 2 Remake -- wow, this game hit me upside the head unexpectedly. I thought I was done with it, but started watching some speedruns and a lot of the tricks are super viable and worth doing (unlike most speedruns I see). just a fun-ass game to play. I even did all the bonus modes (No Way Out with 60 handgun bullets is hell on earth). RE3 coming soon (never played the original) and I expect it to be just as good.

I have Dracula X Chronicles on PSP, my original plan was to play the Rondo of Blood remake for just a bit until I unlock SOTN, but I just kept playing and playing, and now I'm at the final boss, haha. The game is very punishing but it's a lot of fun too, you feel great when you've beaten a stage after five Game Overs. I might even play the original Rondo of Blood as well in due time.

Still going with Fire Emblem Three Houses. I can't play it too often as it drains too much brainpower when you're strategising.

Also trying to finish Pokemon Shield, pretty close to the end now.

Gonna get Persona 5 Royal next week and spend another 100+ hours with the Phantom Thieves.

....i've been meaning to start this up as well ...just about finished SOTN (or as far as i'm willing to go lol). ..i hear Rondo plays more like a traditional Castlevania, and less Metroidy than SOTN.

yet the gameplay is so different between the two. SOTN pretty much birthed a new subgenre.

however

still playing SFV. killing it in casuals for some reason. my spacing somehow became really good and i'm almost whiff punishing on purpose. brolylegs said i had "pretty strong neutral" on stream the other day and he had the advantage with chun vs my kolin. i'm still awful at some confirms though. since i'm working from home now i think i'll just grind hit confirms on my 15 minute breaks for a week and see how that goes

have a 2k19 season going which is an alternate reality starting with the 2018 draft. luka and jaren jackson jr are on my hawks, zion is on the heat, jokic is on the pacers, and harden is shooting 45% from three on 13 attemtps/game. it was incongruous when the actual nba season was going but now it's serving well as a weird substitute

finished borderlands 3 story mode a few days ago and am still completing side missions on mayhem mode. it's fine. i don't have any guns i really like so i'm not super enthused when i play. it might just be general fatigue from the gameplay and presentation. it is cool getting gold drops out of lockers on mayhem mode but this might get dropped until the DLC goes on sale

i started invdivisible and octopath traveler but neither game grabbed me. i should go back to one of them soon

i'm playing a lot of slay the spire on switch. some time ago i beat the game handily on normal mode but got stuck on the low ascension levels, which are runs with added difficulty modifiers like "enemies hit harder" and "bosses have more health." searching for StS speed runs on yt led me to a streamer that has a deep understanding of the game and is good at articulating those thoughts. i've watched several of their streams and as a result i got over the hump and am making my way up to the highest ascension level

thinking about getting granblue fantasy vs or persona 5 royal. i would prefer to wait for the inevitable persona 5 royal PC port even if it's released a year from now. granblue can probably wait since i'm enjoying SFV at the moment. yakuza 7 is dominating my radar right now. i'm so excited for it

Slay the Spire is one of my all time favorites. Picked it up somewhere during Early Access, still playing it almost every day. Mostly daily runs, but ascension 20 is so challenging that it stays fresh even after all this time.

it's amazing how many decks can be made viable because there is so much synergy built into the game. i completed a floor 1 snecko eye watcher run the other day, essentially negating snecko eye's drawback with retain cards, establishment, and meditate. watching jorbs play and talk about how relic x is normally kind of bad but he picked it up since he has cards y and z has helped me think about card and relic value beyond their their properties in a vacuum. he also said something about building a deck to solve early game problems (elites, act 1 boss, etc.) on the way to becoming a deck that can beat the act 3 boss(es) and/or the heart. that helped me approach runs differently and start climbing my way past the early ascension levels

But yeah, to beat higher ascension levels, you're going to have to unlearn a lot of stuff that is perfectly viable or overpowered in standard mode.

I don't really have the patience to really play A20 Jorbs' way, so I tend to get dropped somewhere in the second act. But when I do get to the end, it makes me feel like a smart boy.

i liked metera and zeta but not enough to keep the game on steam. i need a character to grab me like ramlethal and kolin did and no one on the current GFV cast stood out to me like that. GFV seems pretty cool though. any slowness or clunkiness as perceived by me is surely just because i've been playing only SFV lately. i do like that GFV seems neutral heavy and it seems mechanically deeper than it appears to be. definitely will check back in in about a year when the roster is larger

Playing Civ 6 on console (shit's watered down versus the pc version but it's a good time waster)

Running LFG Raids on Destiny 2 on Saturdays (been the same group for that last couple of weekends, good group)

Got my daughter hooked on Marvel Ultimate Alliance on her old 360, wish I still had an old controller to help her - might just buy it on the Xbox one so we both can play.

I was there when FFVII launched, and I've done a fairly recent playthrough of the original, so I think I have a good perspective of it (if you *haven't* played FFVII since PS1, nostalgia is good and bad). I did like what I heard about the ending, though.

MLB The Show 2020: Always the big one this time of year. Diamond Dynasty is just the perfect mix of nostalgia, fantasy team building and not having to pay attention too close (other than online games) that lets me side-watch Giant Bomb videos, dumb reality TV like Love Is Blind, Tiger King or Vanderpump Rules or scream through 10 hours of podcasts. I basically play The Show nonstop from March through September or October, and I'm not even that big of a modern baseball fan.

DOOM Eternal: I'm super on the fence about this one. I figured I'd love it at least as much as 2016 but I put a handful of hours into it the first couple days it was out, got to level 4 or so...and haven't touched it since. This game is the definition of "extra" to me - everything's been programmed and designed to such a minute degree that it feels like I have to have fun the way the people who made the game have fun playing it, only I'm not intimately familiar with every aspect of its design nor do I want to reach that point, so it just feels both really restrictive and way less focused at the same time. I have such weird feelings about this game, I'm not sure when I'll get back to it and kind of regret the purchase right now...

Final Fantasy VII Remake: If DOOM Eternal gets everything so right on paper it all goes wrong in reality, FFVII is almost the opposite. There are so many things wrong with this game, from weird lip animations to N64-grade textures, PS1-grade skyboxes and PS2-grade level design to a super bizarre, extra Japanese storytelling style that feels like its translators played a ton of Yakuza Zero/6 and tried to bring the zany feel of that game into a super melodramatic ecoterrorism tale. The combat is pretty damn fun though, and the voice acting is great almost thanks to how bad some of the dialogue they're tasked with making sound genuine is. I'm not sure how this game would hold up to someone who didn't play or like the original because every time it starts getting me down, some amazing theme kicks in or they super subtly but faithfully recreate something animation for animation from the original in this new super high fidelity and I'm right back in. Plus, what little I think I understand about the new wrinkle they added on the backend has me kind of enjoying the weird graphical mix of late-gen PS4 character models butting up against textures that look like they could have been lifted directly from the original game (which is likely a bug or error of not uploading the right files to the PSN download, because if it isn't...woof!).

Control (Foundation DLC): I'll probably not actually dig into this until I either get a little worn out from FFVII (or finish it if that never happens) but I'm super excited for it. Control was probably my favorite game to play and world to explore last year and I'm very happy to have an excuse to jump back in.

Apex Legends: I've actually barely touched this since MLB dropped and haven't tried the Bloodhound event at all, but this is the first competitive FPS I've played regularly since the original Modern Warfare, and I hit level 75+ on the first three battle passes (including 100 on season 2) so it's definitely the FPS I've played the most and the most consistently other than Goldeneye/Perfect Dark back in the day. It's always a click away.

Dead Cells: You know what it is.

I'm playing Black Mesa, the Half Life remake, on PC. I ordered the Turbo Grafx-16 Mini from Amazon Japan and have been on that. Tetris 99 is a forever gem. Got back into Mario Maker 2 with last week's update. Tried Shadow of the Colossus on PS4 and will be deleting it straight away, no thank you. My partner is playing FFVII Remake and my son is playing Persona 5 Royal so I have been watching as they switch back and forth on the Playstation (so far no arguments). I'm considering a Breath of the Wild replay, maybe Dishonored 2 one more time.

I am legit one away from Platinum in that game but can't get past the final Valkyrie, even on easy. Nothing should ramp that high in difficulty when compared to the rest of the game but here it is. I have done all the armor leveling and the like and still can't do it. It upsets me, lol.

>I don't remember the old games being so difficult.

standard enemies can have wakeup attacks, longer reach, super armor, maybe some i-frames and bigger hitboxes. it feels unfair at times, particularly because of the super armor absorbing a hit that should stun lock the enemy

it also plays closer to dark souls-like evade-counterpunch than classic beat 'em ups that mostly consisted of the player stun locking the enemies to death. the challenge used to be managing and prioritizing multiple enemies. now it's more about spacing and movement

I purchased it late since I have Streets of Rage on the Switch and the release date of the DLC was pushed back by a week. I barely played 5 minutes of the DLC, but this has to be one of the best DLCs for the cheap $7 it cost.

I hope to get a decent amount of time with the game this weekend. It seems as if the developers put a ton of heart into the added content from my very narrow first glance.

I’m playing almost every day. It’s a game that really opens up once you get good enough to stop dying all the time. There’s mountains of goodies to unlock and all sorts of jackass tasks to complete. Every time you think you’re about done, there’s something else to unlock or handle. And again, the unlocks are VERY rewarding lots of the time.

No spoilers but Gunslinger is an amazing gift. He is hard to unlock but he basically creates a whole additional piece of the game. Some guns that sucked are now awesome because of his synergy passive. And his starting weapon is a party.

And holy moly some of the guns you get later on turns the game into a massacre of you just walking around causing destruction. It’s good times. Gunther for instance. Gungine is another. Black Hole Gun = you basically get to cheese the rest of the way as long as you have ammo or the bandana.

And rainbow runs! Gotta love those rainbow runs. You get less stuff but it’s usually better stuff so it’s a good trade off to me! I’ve been able to put together some really fun combos of items where I’m blowing up bosses in 10 or so seconds and knocking out tough rooms in less time than that. Blank bullets, gold ammolet, snowballets, get outta here, Dragun! Keep your bullet hell shenanigans to yourself!

And you haven’t played the game until you unlock Clone. You just haven’t.

big difference.

it's not like...zero load times, but on some games it cuts easily a third from loads.

kinda surprisingly, BR like warzone and apex have the biggest benefits of what I've tried.

the samsung SSDs were on sale last week at best buy and amazon for like $70 for a 500gb, 120 or something for a 1TB (the new ones that go twice as fast are coming soon)

there will probably be more sales

idk if anyone needs a faster SSD for these systems or if it would make a difference

but the T5s are back to like $90 now.

even the 110 is less than the slower ones were just a year or so ago.

kicking myself for not making the move sooner, it's just better.

UNCHARTED 4: Randomly wanted to replay this to remind myself of that old Naughty Dog magic...and totally forgot how many cheats they give you after beating their games one time. Been having a ton of fun with the audio/video filters as well as the Max Payne powers and ability to choose Golden versions of any gun at any time during a mission. It trivializes the combat, even on the hardest not-stupid difficulty, but the story and "acting" as it were is still phenomenal and I'm not sure I wanted to do "true" Uncharted combat that badly anyway. Can't wait for Last of Us 2.

THE BANNER SAGA 2: I played TBS not long after it came out and really dug it for what it was...then it took two years for the sequel and they were pretty upfront that the Kickstarter campaign was flimsy enough it'd likely be another two for the finale so I just kind of let it lie. Now four years later I'm playing the direct sequel to a six year old game and really suffering from the dark-middle-chapter aspect of it all since the series is already incredibly dry and dark. It's also harder to accept its wild juxtaposition of high quality art and world building with the low rent actual storytelling and production value in 2020 than it was in 2015 and Stoic were plucky upstarts from the Mass Effect team. It just doesn't feel like a significant enough growth on the previous game. I probably won't play THE BANNER SAGA 3 unless it makes some significantly interesting changes to the combat; there was charm in the first game that carries to the second, but it seems like they lowered the stakes of the Oregon Trail side of the game while adding a bunch of new abilities to the combat side that make it hard to recall who does what. It all winds up feeling just kind of...there.

BLOODBORNE: Been watching Jan Ochoa at Giant Bomb Get Real Good at this game over the past 2 months, feeling equal pangs of jealousy and nostalgia, so I decided to re-download and one-shot The One Reborn the way I already knew I could...and now I'm scrambling around the new Dream areas and crying like a baby through the Nightmare sections (both Hunter and Old Hunter) trying to shake two years of rust. I MUST beat this game someday...but will I? I have 3-4 mainline bosses left and know from lore videos I'm confident I could take two of them confidently, the only question is whether I can survive the madness to reach them.

-----------------Following up on previous post------------------

Still playing the hell out of MLB THE SHOW 20, still perfect for podcasts and second screening.

Dropped DOOM ETERNAL the same week it came out, currently uninstalled, not really sure I'll ever go back. The further out from that game I get and the more I've heard/read about it, I feel like that game just completely left console players behind when it came to tuning for controller vs. mouse+KB. Really wish I'd listened to my intuition there when I saw all the arcadey stuff in previews, but I loved 2016 so much...

FFVII REMAKE I wrote a lot about on the Giant Bomb forums...it's one of the worst best games I've ever played. So far easily the standout of 2020 though, nostalgia or not. It really helps that the VIDEO GAME part of that video game is some of the most thoughtful but approachable action combat I've played in a long time. The way they balance reminding you of old-school RPG mechanics with the feel of modern action is wild.

CONTROL DLC: Actually never hooked into this, I couldn't find the start point and had that unfortunate issue where picking up an old game the rust just doesn't wear off fast enough while the enemies are endgame strong.

APEX LEGENDS: Still really fucking solid, not really using the new character but the new balances feel up my alley, I'm more competitive now than I was at any point in S4.

--------------Horizon----------------

Last of Us 2, Ghost of Tsushima, Mortal Kombat 11 DLC???, returning to Yakuza 0?, kind of feeling an itch to dust off Mafia III and re-play it with the DLC they recently made free even though that game was hella-busted and frustrating..., I think about finally playing the Shadow of the Colossus remake every once in a while but with nothing to really look forward to in October I might just make a deal out of its 15th anniversary down the road...

hard to imagine unlocking the fun parts about it on a controller. having the flame belch and hotkey weapon swap and throw a grenade and use your weapon mod while double dashing is a lot.

granblue fantasy versus
---------------------------
i'm very much enjoying certain parts of it. it strikes a fine balance between accessible and deep. easy to pick up and bang out some autocombos and specials but near-frame perfect timing is needed for optimizing giant combos ending in supers for max damage. it has a good amount of neutral play but often devolves into corner pressure, like many fighting games and particularly arcsys fighitng games. netcode is awful though, as is ranked matchmaking. my dream is that it gets updated with decent netcode but i'm not holding my breath. i love the art style — led by final fantasy tactics art supervisor hideo minaba — and want to see how they convert characters from the mobile game into a fighting game setting

persona 5 royal
-----------------
the definitive version of one of the best jrpgs of this generation. not much to say about it that hasn't been said in previous threads about this game except there is more time and opportunity. technical attacks have been expanded into something useful and the tweaks to the velvet room allow for some very game breaking things. morgana is far less pushy (still a little pushy) so the player has a lot more time after school than in vanilla p5. i'm making it a point to complete all dungeons in one day when it's possible (some dungeons force an exit/extra day due to a story beat) and it has really opened up the game for me. all those extra days to bump up confidant ranks and grind for yen in mementos really pays off in the mid and late game. i'm about to go into the penultimate dungeon of the base game (there is an additional dungeon in p5r) at level 56 with almost nothing but level 80+ personas, including very late game ones like satan. i'm not as interested in the extra story beats in p5r as i am in how much damage i can do to bosses compared to p5

into the breach
-----------------
extremely engaging once you get your head around the mechanics, the fact that it's not ftl, and that it's not much of a tactics game. it's closer to a puzzle game with several moving parts and a randomized board each round. great for bite-sized gaming on the go or when you have a few extra minutes

fft battleground
------------------
https://www.twitch.tv/fftbattleground. randomized AI final fantasy tactics units fighting to the death for your amusement. it's one of the best ideas i've seen in a long time. it has shades of dota in the repurposing of existing assets and mechanics into something familiar yet new. as expected, calculators can completely take over matches, summoners can deal out tons of aoe damage, and mimes add an element of unpredictability not seen in the base game. it's wonderful and worth watching and learning if you love fft

They have been taking up most of my time lately, but TheShow has some glitches that crop up from time to time that are frustrating and have cost me games.

GOT is gorgeous and pretty much like that. Like all open world games, some of the collecting and fetch quests are tiresome. The side quests are all pretty good and very well written even if they all end with you having to swing your sword. Combat is satisfying as hell, especially when you get your parry game right and master all the different stances.

Boy oh boy is that game humbling with the puzzles. The cutesy, kidsy graphics makes failing at some of the puzzles so frustrating, but it makes beating some of the bosses so fulfilling.

i got through two divine beasts, all the memories, all the towers. i think an okay amount of shrines. right now i dont really want to get to the third beast but i also dont want to just explore so i dont know what i will do lol.

i definitely understand the hype now. for a while i thought the game just wasnt for me. im considering ordering hyrule warriors but i might take a break when im "done" with botw.

it's been a while since i've played.. but once you locate all the power cells and get the shield weave armor, it gets a lot easier to to finish up all the side missions you have left over..

I think it's pretty fun/tolerable. Definitely not mind-blowing or game-changing. I just hope they don't treat it like Anthem and let it fall to the wayside. If anything, it should've come out maybe before Infinity War or Endgame, since those are so iconic at this point.

the Legacy Collections + Mega Man 11 for the price of a regular PS4 game is a good ass deal. I don't know if it's still going on though

but I've been playing ports on a gang of consoles, including PS2.

then literally a few weeks later Nintendo announced the 3D All-Stars collection. Oh well.

Coming from more recently 3D Mario titles like Galaxy and Odyssey, I was shocked at how bad the camera and controls are for SM64 in comparison. I seriously just wanted to stop playing, but after an hour or two you get used it. I now find those things...tolerable. The game itself is still very fun to play. Exploring courses and finding new stars never gets old. It's just amazing how refined 3D Mario titles are today, and it's all thanks to SM64 paving the way.

i will probably start with galaxy since its the only one i have never played. i hear its great, possibly the best 3D mario.

then sunshine. i have played this one but i always stop playing it after a month or so and not getting very far.

i played mario 64 so much when it came out. ill probably check it out but unless they revamped a lot (doesnt seem like they did) i dont think ill spend much time with it until im really bored.

i kind of want the physical copy but i didnt preorder so im guessing it will be hard to find one. might just go ahead and get the digital version.

My only concern is that the Joy Cons may not feel as comfortable as the Nunchuk/Wiimote combo.

I haven't played Sunshine before, so looking forward to giving that a go.

never owned a N64 and only got in short bursts at friends' houses. my cousin got Pilotwings 64 instead of Mario that first Christmas, so we played the shit out of that instead. later we mostly played Goldeneye.

and yes, it's primitive, but the ground-breaking feeling was still there. the analog movement, the freedom to explore, the depth of gameplay (all those jump variations, with perfect weight and balance to them)...everything since has been an improvement on that original template. Miyamoto brought down the 10 Commandments of 3-D gaming from the mountaintop.

I ended up really enjoying this, it's just pure joy whenever you've finally reached that elusive star you were trying so hard to get, and overcoming the imperfect controls and camera just makes it even more rewarding. I didn't think it would when I first started, but this definitely still holds up in 2020, and I now understand why it was so groundbreaking back in 96.

Still MLB The Show, content has been perhaps the apex of ultimate team modes this year. Just embarrassing the competition left and right...unfortunately, it's baseball, so who cares?

Spiritfarer. This is a cute little game about ferrying your deceased friends and family through reconciling their worst memories and habits from their lives and then seeing them off into the great unknown. It's got some super-lite Harvest Moon mechanics and it drags on for way, way too long (and kind of directionless at times too) but it's been a cool little distraction in these dark times. Has kind of a Studio Ghibli feel to it.

Tony Hawk. Still haven't cracked even a million since getting back to it, and man are the joints in my hands twenty years older than they were the last time I played these games, but boy is this the shit. The soundtrack is great but it's so smart they let your Spotify override it also. In a really weird year for big budget titles this might honestly have a shot at GOTY.

Fell off Spiritfarer in the final third, it just isn't helpful enough about where to find certain materials and some of the later characters just felt more and more like caricatures, with a gameplay loop that just got busier and busier but didn't really feel like it NEEDED to. Probably grab some item guides and wrap it up after the first snowfall though.

THPS really hurts my wrists so I don't play it much but it's basically perfect. I just wish online wasn't full of people who've clearly stuck with the series through all its twists and turns, every time I try to get into a fun little match it's just super discouraging to go up against a bunch of normal humans and one dude that's basically the Daigo Umehara of skate combos.

VAMPYR is a new one I've just started today via PS+ and I'm kind of regretting I chose Normal over Story mode, which was added in a later patch after many reviews claimed its Bloodborne for Idiots combat style put a real sour note on an otherwise very engaging, Witcher 3-esque adventure RPG...and I can totally see that after just a couple hours. Playing this game kinda sucks, but it's set in London during the onset of the Spanish Flu as you play a blood transfusion specialist whose recently become a vampire, so...to say the themes of the game are startlingly relevant would be an understatement.

GENSHIN IMPACT is a game I can't really explain the appeal of but I've been thinking about it a lot since it came to PS4. I'm at a point now where the grind is real but I honestly kind of appreciate that, it's the sort of thing I just pop into a couple of times a week and accomplish what I can then mosey on. As someone who never played Breath of the Wild it's also nice to get even 5% of a glimpse of what people liked about that game at no charge (the game is free).

I've gotten back into THE LAST OF US PART II on Hard+ and am really enjoying taking an honest crack at the open ended nature of the combat encounters now that I'm not stressing getting to the end of the game and joining the conversation surrounding it as soon as possible. I think critics really underrated how similar this game is - aside from the lack of science fiction weapons - to Metal Gear Solid V. The combat just feels lived in, and while the story's a pulpy meandering mess the characters, performances, dialogue and settings are all still fantastic. Pretty damn sure this is my Game of the Year easily.

Also giving Ghost of Tsushima Legends a shot and dabbling in and out of that game's NG+ as well...Legends is actually pretty hard, and I beat the game on Hard/Lethal originally! In fact it seems so hard it might be the sort of thing I wind up having to appreciate from afar since I don't really have a gaming friend group and even halfway through the story missions being randomly matched in voice-less sessions seems like it's making things more difficult than they need to be, I can only imagine what the horde mode is like.

nowhere prophet (game pass for PC)

cool hearthstone x FTL mashup. lots of variety to the cards/creatures. easy to pick up and play if you have some CCC and rougelike experience. however the runs are too long and cards/creatures having permadeath is very discouraging

nba 2k19 (ps4)

my go-to on-the-stationary-bike game. load up myleague, run spread pick and rolls/pops for ~75 minutes/20+ miles, and my daily exercise is done

spelunky 2 (ps4)

spelunky:demon's souls::spelunky 2:dark souls. mostly the same game but *more* with slight QoL improvements. spelunky 2 is harder than its predecessor imo. seems like there are way more instant death opportunities. still very fun and engrossing

guilty gear xx accent core plus R (PC)

100% playing this because of the rollback beta, which will end on november 16th. old fighting games were crazy. trying to learn this as a challenge to myself but it might be too challenging

forza horizon 4 (PC)

mostly doing the seasonal challenges for cars and money. i enjoy the process of being assigned a car due to tournament restrictions and making it as fast as possible so i can beat the driveatars at expert and sometimes unbeatable. occasionally dipping into rivals mode to shave a few seconds off my times

but I've been playing PGA2K21 since August. I haven't played a golf game in over a decade. So the game is good enough for me. No complaints being a casual gamer and real casual golfer.

I also dip into TitanFall 2 from time to time.

I'm trying to figure out what games I'm going to cop when this XBOX Series S gets here next week.

one of the most indelible games of my youth (like many who experienced it in the moment). even with 22 years dulling the varnish, replaying it was still as resonant as the very first time.

first 40 hours are unbelievably great -- the scope, characters and world are incredible. and even with the extremely dated look, the soundtrack keeps the game timeless. Mitsuda crafted an entire score where every other song would be the best track on any other JRPG.

I'm not even sure a fleshed out disc 2 would've made everything better. there are certainly big ideas that needed to play out better (many of the humans in the world mutating after removing the limiters was one of the biggest plot twists that got lost in the disc 2 format), but the battle system and dungeons were reaching their limits. plus several of the "answers" to disc 1 were not as satisfying as the mystery, even if they had been presented in disc 1 fashion. and how much more damn music could they have Mitsuda compose?

anyway. an eternal classic. glad I got to play it when it was released.

(btw, I have saved myself a lot of hours by not finding out about RetroArch until now. PS1 never looked so good)

just picked it up during the Steam sale and the difficulty is way ramped up from Doom (2016)

I started on Ultra Violence (which I remember being a solid challenge on the last game) and the first three levels have been *punishing*

they added a lot of combat elements -- air-dashing, dash-strafing, bullet-time on jump descent, flame thrower, ice bomb -- which are cool, but to the point of sensory overload

seems like Eternal is like all the Hell levels of the last game, which were death arena after death arena

I miss the more atmospheric parts and linear story so far

Eternal is fun as hell.

dash strafing mid-air, pulling out your sniper scope to weak-point a heavy demon in bullet time, then switching to your super shotgun (still while in mid-air) to grappling hook a different demon, set him on fire for the armor drop and kill him when you land...*chef kiss*

the combat system gives you a ton of different ways to play, and when you get good you actually *feel* like the Doom Slayer.

and the environments and story work out in the end (well, for Doom anyway). phenomenal game.

until you build your skill level up to deal with all these enemies precisely. you get mentally fatigued after those big arena fight mid-level.

what I had to learn from Doom (2016):

- Flame belch like a mutha. map that to an easy to reach button/key because you need to be constantly refilling armor to survive.

- for most regular battles, I used the combat shotgun with the grenade launcher. max that sucker out so you can keep moving while dishing out damage to everybody.

- plasma gun is fairly useless in the original game (they make you use it in the DLC). yeah, certain enemies have shields but you can stagger them with a well placed grenade from your shotgun.

- I liked the bullet-time rune, so when you jump you can switch to your sniper scope and hit weak points on heavy demons. when you get good you can quick-scope them, but this helps a lot when starting.

- chainsaw, chainsaw, chainsaw. don't waste them on heavy demons in the regular campaign, you get plenty of ammo from the demon fodder, but don't sit on them either -- you need ammo all the time.

- ice grenade then blood punch does major damage. best way to break the sled of the Doom Hunters. rocket launcher (lock-on) to finish them off.

- ballista and super shotgun on other heavy demons. simplest way to kill Marauders. the super shotgun is extremely useful once you get the upgrade that gives you armor after a chain-shot.

- a lot of the game is just finding out what combination of weapons takes out each enemy the best. quick-switching weapons is a NECESSITY on even Ultra Violence, I had to change my whole layout on my keyboard mouse so I could instantly switch through weapons, flame belch and change grenade types.

but man. once you get all this shit down? fuuuuck this game is fun. you are the Doom Slayer.

Cyberpunk 2077: lots of good stuff there, but scratch the surface and you find something that should've been in development quite a bit longer. Beautiful world and cinematic approach, but many of the actual gameplay systems feel half-assed/unfinished. Needs a lot of love before it can become something like Skyrim, which I still return to every now and then.

Monster Train: appeared on Game Pass so I gave it a shot since Slay the Spire is one of my favorites. It's holding up pretty good so far, but I think StS is still the king of balance and replayability. Very nice dopamine dispenser though, definitely going to be a time sink for the coming days/weeks.

Horizon Zero Dawn: some of the most fun & engaging fights I've had in a while, with a story that kept me interested in between. The human npc AI could use some work and the skill tree doesn't really invite experimentation, but very solid game overall.

The Outer Worlds: big letdown. Gameplay is thin as hell and the story/RPG elements aren't strong enough to overcome the utter pointlessness of every other choice you make. Weapons, attributes, perks and crafting feel like they don't matter for progression at all. Anti-corporation schtick wears thin pretty damn fast.

Wolfenstein: Youngblood. Can be fun with a co-op buddy, but it's a bit repetitive and some of the boss battles are terribly designed. Like "do you hate me playing your game?" terrible.

Red Dead Redemption 2: first time I've ever been emotional over a video game story. Also one of the most beautiful game worlds I've experienced.

monster train has a very appealing rube goldberg feel to it that StS lacks (except with certain exhaust-focused builds.) it's fun to set up the dominoes in an umbra deck and watch your monsters get stronger. i like the positioning mechanics too. the game as a whole is a nice mix of cards, tower defense, and a little classic jrpg. i don't know how replayable monster train is compared to StS but i do keep trying to advance through the covenant ranks so there must be something there

• I mentioned getting VAMPYR from Playstation Plus in my last post and it turns out that was one of my favorite games in a long time. The fighting stinks but if you make the right skill upgrades and find the right weapons you'll quickly go from under to overpowered, trivializing the bad part of the game and able to focus on the social aspects. Nothing about this game is perfect - in fact, you can find something new to complain about every five or ten minutes - but somehow it all congeals into this really fun, unique game that stands as a good example of just how far some unique ideas and strong world building can get you. Plus, it remained VERY 2020 throughout, and while most people ran from virus media I clung to it as a reminder.

• HOLLOW KNIGHT is a game I can now understand why people love, at least partially, but it's just not for me. I find the art kind of boring to look at and the combat feels as demanding as something like Dead Cells without the sheer grind you can run on to overpower enemies you can't handle. I set out hoping to binge this game hard but fell off immediately instead.

• NBA 2K20 is a game I re-installed when the 2021 season started. I must've downloaded this game earnestly three or four times (along with 2K19) since the bubble hoping it'd click but honestly these games just feel like ass these days. If their fantasy mode was any good I might still be hooked, but I hate how MyLeague games feel and just can't find sliders that make up for the fact the players are too big on courts that are too small and the animations still feel designed for the post-up roots of the franchise's 2007-2012 glory days.

• DESTINY 2 is still maybe the best pure game-feel of the generation, and I'm always good for a month or two of solid play once or twice a year, but I didn't buy the Beyond Light expansion this time around and the level of content for a solo player seems extremely limited at this point...again, the core gameplay hooked me hard for a few weeks, but if I'm gonna mindlessly grind GENSHIN IMPACT has a stronger sense of moving forward and...

• MLB THE SHOW 20 is still the most perfect mindlessly podcast and achieve something new game ever made. 12 year old me is so happy I'm playing a baseball game this much, 32 year old me still can't believe I care about baseball again at all.

• CYBERPUNK 2077 was a fun experience for me, a base PS4 owner, because I've never got to go to E3 and see a work-in-progress game before. This game looks like a Jackson Pollock impersonation of a Claude Monet painting. The voice acting is so-so, the open world is basically Grand Theft Auto III levels of dis-engaged (I can't believe this game decided it's Wanted system works at all - they should've just not had cops), the action is pretty illegible, the stealth is not my jam, and the game hard crashed my PS4 more in two weeks than the system has in seven full years otherwise. I was fascinated by all of it, but accepted Sony's offer for a refund and uninstalled the game as soon as I played my second hour-long mission that hit a fail state crash three times in a row and started back at the beginning.

• KENTUCKY ROUTE ZERO is wildly ambitious in some ways, but in others...I played four chapters and all the interstitials leading up to Chapter V in a single evening and loved the mindstate it put me in, but the more ambitious it got with perspective shifts and the more characters it piled on, I found myself wishing there was some voice acting here, or some kind of lore book I could double back on to connect some dots. I'm excited to finish, but I'm not sure when I'll get back in the mood. There's no whiskey in the house.

• SHADOW OF THE TOMB RAIDER is a game I was scared away from by the zeitgeist despite absolutely loving the first two games in the reboot series...and I'm fascinated by this game in a lot of opposite ways from Cyberpunk. It's just as gorgeous as The Last of Us Part II or Red Dead Redemption 2 and likely the best example of HDR on base consoles I'll see before a PS5 appears on my table. The combat is a huge step back, but surprisingly (and thankfully) this game is mostly tomb raiding and mindlessly completing conversational side missions in large hub towns. It's clear that this wanted to be a definitive game: bits of Horizon Zero Dawn, Assassin's Creed, Uncharted and even predictions of The Last of Us Part II are in this thing and it's usually worse at all the things it's borrowing from those franchises. The story is also batshit bad, equivalent in whiplash factor to Wonder Woman 84.

And yet...I've put nearly 30 hours into it and am continuing to gawk at the scenery and scrounge for flavor documents that add zero flavor to the world. There's a baseline appeal to this, most of all that with a little more focus on the things it's clearly best at (which double as the things that make it unique) Shadow could have been an all-time action game. Instead, like Vampyr, it's a death by 1,000 cuts situation that, sadistically, can still leave you satisfied.

I have a decent time playing the game up until I get to the Sewer Dog fight, and then I'm not strong enough to beat him. The "go to sleep to upgrade" system fuckin sucks.

I got about 10 minutes in before I completely gave up. The black/greyness of it all made me sleepy as shit. I'd rather play Avengers.

I know for sure I read somewhere that Valhalla wouldn't be as long as Odyssey, but my 90+ hours calls bullshit on that.

Also, for the second game in a row, it feels completely underwhelming to kill everyone on the Templar list/tree.

I did like the minor reference to Desmond. They need to write him back in some kinda way.

it takes some doing to feel out what exactly you can get away with and there are a lot of failure states that are easy to reach without trying. it's tough to communicate the clockwork-like nature of the AI and levels to the player from a tutorial perspective. i think the game gets easier to process once players figure out they are an independently acting cog in an otherwise rigid and predictable contraption. the levels are also large and complex and require a lot of experience and memorization to maneuver through effectively, which can be a little off-putting or intimidating for some players

i loved hitman 2016. the sequel was an improvement in almost every way. the level design in those games is usually outstanding and ambitious. the sheer number of ways you can achieve goals in that series is astounding and does a good job of encouraging replaying the levels. i'm looking forward to hitman 3 as soon as IOI figure out how i'm going to import my hitman 1 and 2 progress and levels into 3 on PC

I did feel the visceral excitement of stumbling into a private room the woman target from the fashion show is in with no security around and gave her a headshot and snuck out...but then I got caught and the gunplay sucks and I KNOW that's kind of the point but it was unsatisfying to die in that moment.

It doesn't help that save/reload is a cumbersome process on PS4, and I'm not one for save-scumming normally which this game really encourages. Neither am I all that good at finding the fun in games on my own - it's part of the reason I enjoy Naughty Dog games so much. They hand it to you.

Copped a series X.

Was playing AC:Valhalla, and somehow dropped off of it. Copped some more games like Watch Dogs Legion. Was running Gears Tactics pretty hard as well.

Copped Gears 5 since it was only $9.99 digital and started a bit of that. (Pissed cause now it's free with Xbox Gold next month).

Anyways, Yakuza is so damn fun. Love the modern setting. Has rekindled my love of jrpg's. Even went and copped Persona 5 Royal version for the PS4 to play later even though I had the OG Persona 5.

Anyways, I'm almost in the Yakuza end game. Got a few achievements I want to pop and then I'll grind to the end. I"m like 2 chapters away.

Afterwards its a choice of what to finish: Horizon Zero Dawn, Days Gone or AC:V.

I'm trying to get through Nioh, but it doesn't seem like it the game for me. I just got through The Last of Us, but it was a bit of a chore.

I ran through Persona 5 and Persona 5 Royal. Great games. I'm trying to get through the Uncharted series, but that seems like a bit of a chore as well.

I bought Nioh 2 for about $10. But I was not a fan of the original gameplay, so I took it back.

At some point in time, I'll get back into THPS 1&2. It's been a good time, and I look forward to trying Control Ultimate Edition from Playstation Plus in February. I also am looking at picking up Avengers for cheap.

I'm looking forward to the Guilty Gear Strive demo that will be coming soon.

lots of good and bad stuff in both the AAA and indie spheres. for every creatively bankrupt AAA — and there are a lot of them — there are several more indie pixel platformer roguelike metroidvanias and procedurally generated suvive-'em-ups

i'm with you on iterative laundry-list-and-icon-heavy-open-world games that are light on good "feel" and mechanics. i keep banging my head against the first hour or so of middle earth: shadow of war, hoping to experience the nemesis system, but i can't seem to get past the awful controls, combat-by-numbers, and map clutter. the irony of burying an amazing innovation like the nemesis system under open world bloat is pretty good though

It's way more straight forward and the combat in that game is pretty good once you get a bunch of the upgrades. It's like Batman on training wheels and feels pretty cool with the elf powers.

I keep putting War off because of the bloat you mention, though I hear the Nemesis system has a lot more depth to it as well it was still insanely cool in Mordor and I can safely say I haven't experienced anything like it since.

In response to Reply # 0

Fantastic decision.
I figured with the next wave of COVID coming I'd be stuck home even more than I have been and needed something that required my attention and brain moreso than Netflix binging.

Grabbed a Switch since it seems more "welcoming" to a new gamer and I'm a complete noob when it comes to non-sports game (and even sports games at this point as they've become too convoluted and I don't even play those anymore either).

Right off the bat I knocked out Pokemon Let's Go (loved Pokemon blue as a kid and having basically a ported version with updated graphics and some mechanics changes was an obvious first purchase) and then proceeded with Odyssey, my first Mario game ever and the first platformer I ever "beat."

From there I started researching "similar" games, grabbed SMBU Deluxe but was meh on it, but eventually Ori and the Blind Forest popped up during a sale and I downloaded the demo and immediately purchased, played through, learned what a "metroidvania" was and started digging from there.

Grabbed Hollow Knight and Steamworld Digg 2. SD2 was a little too slow for me, though I love the concept of dig, collect, upgrade, dig again, etc. I'll get back to it here and there but it doesn't grab me for long stretches. Hollow Knight I found too difficult and I don't like that I'm never sure I'm going in the right direction. I gave it ~5 hours but it's not for me.

Next up I saw Celeste pop up on sale, a game I heard great things about. Super hard, but super forgiving, and instantly became a favorite of what I've played, and the first game I went back and played more (as well as started a fresh run) after I beat it.

Though met with skepticism, my two friends told me I *had* to play Hades. The idea of dying and having to start all over turned me off and scared me (I died like 2k times in my Celeste run) but man am I glad I listened to them. This game is THE SHIT. I've escaped like 8 times so far through 50+ runs and I'm still finding it super fun and the right amount of challenging without adjusting the difficulty. Definitely a game I'm gonna do a run here and there for a LONG time.

Currently working through The Messenger. I love 2d platformers, though I hate boss fights. I kinda just want to do puzzle/problem solving to get through levels, boss fights tend to be too difficult for me (at least in this game) and it teeters on ruining the overall experience.

I downloaded Dead Cells since I loved Hades so much and it was half-off, but I'm gonna wait a while before I start.

So, given all that, any recommendations for a new gamer who likes 2d platforming (and apparently rogelikes and a little metroidvania) would be appreciated!

Damn, congrats on beating Celeste. I play a good amount of games a year and found that too hard near the end, I couldn't figure out the mirror castle or whatever that gimmick was at all.

Super Meat Boy is kind of like the spiritual ancestor to that game in terms of specific, brutal platforming.

Rogue Legacy is often pointed to as the game that blew the lid off rogue likes as a genre and I really enjoyed it. Spelunky as well, though that game never fully clicked with me - it suffered a little from how often I heard it was absolutely perfect, I admit. Both these games are kind of about boss runs at the end of the day though and Rogue isn't as well balanced as Hades. I basically just had to grind stats until I overpowered all four of them.

Spiritfarer is minimal platforming but a little puzzly and a lot of people were deeply affected by its story - I found it tiring by the end but I'm a coldhearted dude sometimes. No combat at all!

Inside and Limbo are both awesome all puzzle no boss side scrollers that can be finished in a single evening or two sittings max.

I don't know if The Fall of The Swapper are on Switch but those are both really nifty 2D puzzle games with intriguing story reasons behind the mechanics.

One last one I really enjoyed was a game called Valiant Hearts that goes through many of the more significant events of the French campaign in World War I called Valiant Hearts. Super neat little game if a little corny considering the subject matter.

Yup, this one is on my list, basically because it came up at the top of every "games like Celeste" search I did. From what I gathered it's a lot more difficult, but I'm definitely going to play it in the future.

I've watched some videos on these but they seemed less like games and more like movies/stories that I just keep holding right on the joystick to progress. But if there is enough puzzles then it might be worth checking out.

I got to about 10th or 11th stage and just stopped. The bosses were tough but I could lock in for a while and just say to myself that I wasn't stopping until I beat the boss I was stuck on.

I got tired of dying on the damn diverse array of shady jumps they made sure to pack the game with. All of the jumping and floating and evading lame death took a lot out of me. For some reason, I can live better with 'tough boss that you have to play well against for 10 minutes to win' than I can with 'do this absurd serious of pit jumps and spike avoidance exercises'.

I might go back to it to see can I take it the rest of the way. Or I might new school it, watch a vid of someone else doing it, and call it a day.

I'm pretty much the opposite. I enjoy all the platforming and figuring out how to get from the entrance of a room to the exit with all the shit that can hurt/kill me in my way, but the bosses really fuck up my flow. I just go on YouTube, see what the strategy is, and go at it 10-20 times until I finally get through it. I just beat the final boss of the first part of the game, now I'm figuring out wtf I'm supposed to be doing in the second part.

Celeste is definitely a game that WANTS you to overcome its challenges

i have some recs if you're still looking for stuff that might fit you.

Finished SHADOW OF THE TOMB RAIDER. Boy does that game get dumb. Really fascinating example of a game that just didn't know what it was, tried to be every game ever made, and failed. I couldn't say why I put 40 hours into it other than there's something fundamental about those games I dig. Plus all the HDR.

DETROIT: BECOME HUMAN is also fantastically stupid, but in a mostly good way? I had a blast with this game, even complaining about it. It's handling of race stuff is baaaaaaaaad.

FULL THROTTLE REMASTERED gave me exactly the nostalgic hit I needed, so happy it was aPS+ game. If anybody's played this though, I didn't recall the motorcycle fights being quite as hard/bad as they are. I dropped the game there which is kind of a bummer.

HITMAN I mentioned a little above, I love to watch people play this game but I just can't get on its level.

13 SENTINELS Very, very cool game despite some pretty uncomfortable anime girl shit in the first 30 minutes. Some reviews say the combat portion isn't all that but I found its look and the later weapon types really fun to just watch go boom and make loud noises. There are 9,999 supplemental battles after the main story is over and I enjoy just firing this up as a podcast replacement for MLB THE SHOW. If you like sci-fi at all, everything you've ever liked about the genre is wadded up into this game but the way they present it will keep you on your toes and I doubt any two people would experience the story the same way.

YAKUZA ZERO I'm going back to after a year off. I played Kiwami first and tried to roll right into ZERO but was just done with the combat. Put about 14 hours in back then and the game is remarkably easy to jump right back into. Hooked on the cabaret club stuff and enjoying the real estate game as well. I watched Giant Bomb's play through of this game four years ago so nothing about the story can surprise me which is kind of a bummer but yup, it's as good as everybody says. Though Majima is a lot more fun to fight with than Kiryu is.

certainly tricky enough parts that were hard but not super frustrating.

art style was excellent throughout -- main reason to keep playing was to see what area would be unlocked next.

The second one, I went around in circles for a few days, not knowing where to get new powers/abilities to open up the next area. I had to find a guide that suggested a particular path to start on then try other areas after that.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps was way easier than the Blind Forest.

ghost recon: wildlands
-------------------------
despite my general disinterest for open world checklist games GR:W really sucked me in. this is mostly due to the incredible world design. it has the standard every-conceivable-biome-packed-into-a-20-km²-area open world design but the detail and transitions between biomes make the world feel truly believable. i have spent hours flying around the world in a helicopter, forsaking fast travel, because exploring and opening the map up is so rewarding visually. it's quite astounding. the gunplay is fine and improves as you acquire new guns and components. many of the most effective guns are only available by spending real world money — which is kind of rotten — but there are still way more guns than anyone would ever need attainable just by playing through the game. it does have a mercenaries: playground of destruction "deck of 52" feel to it but locating, drawing out, and eliminating the targets is usually tedious and unrewarding. to this end i have mostly spent my in game time traversing the map, collecting new guns and components, taking down enemy camps and bases, and ignoring the story missions almost completely. i have found the game to be extremely enjoyable when played like this

efootball PES 2021 season update
--------------------------------------
it's been a few years since i played a football game. PES 21 seems about the same as previous versions which is more than adequate since PES plays so well. the controls are extremely responsive as per usual and despite my hiatus i was back to whipping the ball around the pitch using manual passing within a few matches. the game looks great from a distance and like a disaster up close. i've turned off replays for this reason. i'm looking forward to loading up a community-constructed edit file with real teams, kits, and leagues and starting up a new master league run

middle earth: shadow of war
--------------------------------
not a fan of the melee combat but i do like "sneaking" around (stealth in this game is a joke) and making the AI units fight each other while i dart around out of reach and shoot arrows at foes. the nemesis system seems to be at least good as advertised and probably better. it's one of those rare things that lives up to the hype. it's such an integral part of the game that sometimes i think all the traversal and combat mechanics were designed solely as a way to engage with the nemesis system. the weapon and armor upgrade/customization system seems weak and half-baked, the controls are maybe 75% accurate to what i intend to do at any given moment, and the melee-auto-combat-by-numbers is boring. i'm still enjoying this game quite a bit despite its flaws

This is a phenomenal single player game. I beat the main story twice and dabbled in many ghost mode affairs, usually not lasting past 30 hours. I would fly in helicopters even tho every GM player says not to, and I ended up jumping out of the heli and killing myself bc the heli fell on me. Stopped playing it entirely after another frustrating GM death-glitch. may even start some more. one of my all time favorite shooters.

loop hero
-----------
the internet's current GOTY du jour. somewhere between an autobattler, idle clicker, moba, and progress simulator. it's mysterious and charming, which counts for a lot in a crowded marketplace. there isn't much agency for the player as your fate is almost entirely determined by RNG. you can nudge it in a desired direction but if you don't get the right kind of drops you're usually screwed no matter what your game plan is. it's kind of inconsistent too. i find myself failing runs in nearly identical scenarios that i had successful runs in. i don't quite know why i failed in those situations. that's frustrating and makes me not want to play the game. it does have a nice flow to it and the gameplay loop is intriguing and propulsive

hitman 3
----------
still the same old hit mane but now with dark souls-like shortcuts that persist through playthroughs. this seems unbalanced and an unnecessary change. just design the level to make those areas more accessible from the beginning. i think this is a concession to new players. another concession might be the reduced difficulty on "professional" (default) difficulty. the vision cones and range are greatly reduced. you can get away with a lot more than you used to right in front of guards and citizens. it's a little off-putting as a hitman vet but it's is a good change. those that want a tougher challenge can always play "master" difficulty. the level design continues to be astounding. there are some nice wrinkles in a few of the levels and as always a lot of extra objectives and missions within each level to encourage replays and exlporation. IOI finally figured out how to import cross-store saves so i was able to bring most of my hitman 2 progress into 3. i'm going through and attempting to get "silent assassin, suit only" rank on all the levels in the game, mostly ones from 2 and 3. i might record a few runs and post them

division 2
-----------
i felt like shooting folks, grinding, and optimizing so i reinstalled it. i can't really tell how much changed since it's been a long time since i played. it's a little on the open-world bloated side but it's still fun to play

street fighter v
-----------------
kolin got nerfed but she's still mostly the same. haven't really played enough matches to fully gauge how much the game has changed but i do see folks playing a lot more neutral. there is less run-at-you-with-plus-buttons due to v-shift even though i don't see that many people using it or using it correctly. ranked still sucks and the netcode is inferior to the guilty gear strive beta. i'm probably dropping SFV when strive comes out but i'm enjoying the high level footsies play for the moment

didn't quite figure this game out. beat the world 1 boss and can't seem to get past world 2. i think what i'm doing wrong is overloading the loop with monsters but i also will just fail a run because i got some bad dice rolls. this game is probably not actually good but just has an intriguing presentation and combination of genres

>hitman 3
>----------

still messing with this a little. close to getting silent assassin/suit only on all levels.

>division 2
>-----------

ended up with a broken skill tier+ build. +1 skill tier on all armor pieces and the 'in sync' talent (weapon damage increases skill damage and vice versa) on one gun. the talent that has a 25% chance to reset skill cooldowns on skill kills on one piece of armor. used cluster seeker mines (+10 mines!!) and the turret exclusively. just tossing seeker mines endlessly. blew through the tiers with this build. made it to world tier 4 with world tier 2 gear. made it to world tier 5 with world tier 4 gear. world tier 5 is more grinding and optimizing. i think the point is to gear up for raids so more gear can be earned. seems like pointless grinding from this point on. i did have a lot of fun up to world tier 5 though

>street fighter v
>-----------------

i can't play this game unless i'm high and currently i'm not doing that. rose looks fun. maybe i'll get back into this by the time oro and akira are out. CPT japan was wild. definitely worth watching the VODs on yt

Dropped FULL THROTTLE for now, but at some point I'll have to finish it out of nostalgia. I also didn't turn 13 SENTINELS into a podcast game, but I also haven't installed it. I finished YAKUZA ZERO; the hostess club battles rule, the real estate battles drool. I kind of want to play the whole series now? I'm scared. Maybe I'll just go to JUDGEMENT instead?

Anyway...

NIER: AUTOMATA I finally decided to buy at half-off because I've just been playing so many Japan-origin games these days compared to the past decade and figured I finally ought to see it for myself. I was a little surprised I beat the game in just 11 hours, and I'm not finding stumbling into alternative endings terribly charming so far, but I know the joke endings aren't what the B run is all about and I'm excited to see what all the hype's about. The combat's mashy but it's fine, the music is incredible and every set piece in the game is terrifyingly memorable. I'm really happy with this.

BREATH OF THE WILD, meanwhile, I'm having a much more conflicted time with. I played about 100 hours of Genshin Impact last year, and have played Horizon: Zero Dawn to nearly 100% completion on both Hard and NG+ Ultra Hard, so I'm struggling to not notice all the things those games do better than Breath of the Wild. The game looks pretty sloppy on a big screen most of the time (and beautiful almost at random), the menus and to an extent the controls are clunky and misshapen, weapon and ammo management is an absolute joke compared to just about any open world third person game with an inventory even contemporaneously (GTA V and Horizon come to mind first) and a lot of the survival elements, while clever, threaten to get in the way of progress without adding anything "fun" or "enjoyable".

But then there are those magic moments where I find a solution to a problem, look up that puzzle on the internet and realize I may have been in just a handful of people who did this thing this way because nobody has said they did they same thing on the internet and it makes me grin so damn wide. The NPC barks, audio cues, everything sound related is magical - this soundtrack is so fucking weird, man! I've put tons and tons of hours into this, and while it's hard to trust the Switch's 90+ hours it's probably not much less accounting for idle time. That's not insignificant for a game I'm mostly unimpressed by in 2021 - but I'm glad to have gotten a crack at it finally, if only so I can confidently sound the horn on Horizon demanding more respect on its name for the rest of eternity!

HADES, meanwhile, has kept me firmly away from BotW the past week and I may not go back to Zelda until I beat Hades for the first time - which was very nearly just this morning. I'm 40 attempts in and felt incredibly self-conscious when I looked up a player survey post-1.0 release and most people were saying their first clear was in the 9th to 14th run range (!!!) but I'm just stupid and brain dead when it comes to these sorts of games and try to brute force my way a lot of the time, especially when I'm just tired of a certain area or enemy. Totally makes sense this was nearly a unanimous GotY pick last year, though again - what the fuck is up with Switch games looking like shit on TVs?! I wouldn't hesitate to buy this game again on PS4 if it would look as clean as it does on the handheld when projected on a 55" screen.

I gave EA Play a shot with the $0.99 month trial and played both BURNOUT PARADISE and MADDEN NFL 20 through it. I get the hype for Burnout, I wish I'd played it at the time! That's all there really is to say about that. And maybe it's just skipping Madden for nearly a decade, but Madden NFL 20 seems weirdly hated on? I liked all the RPG aspects they added to the Franchise mode and I think the weekly training modes are a brilliant way to both teach Madden and football concepts in general. Players' knees still look terrible and the running game still feels...silly in a way I don't remember it being back in Madden 2005, but I was pretty impressed and got about halfway through a season with the Bucs in a single evening...before never touching it again 'cause I'm just pretty out on football these days. But I thought it was cool!

It took me just under 30 attempts to reach the final boss, I think my first escape was #34, with it being my 3rd fight with the final boss. After that escapes became pretty easy if I was using a weapon I was comfortable with and didn't get completely unlucky with boons. I'd say the easiest weapon for me was the fists because I'm more comfortable to up-close, hit/attack mashing fighting. I think my first escape I didn't even use my special or cast, but more recently I'm starting to try to improve in those regards (cast especially).

I was at 50-something attempts when I finally got my 10th escape, but I haven't picked it up since. I was burnt out. Towards my final runs though I was getting better at strategizing which boons I wanted to fish for and how to build good combinations of them.

Beat this game, got nearly every ending. I'm not over the moon about it the way other people were, but I did know some of the twists ahead of time. Pure B-game with A-ambition, glad I played it but honestly I was happy to be done with it when it was all over. I'm not sure why I didn't sacrifice myself for someone else later, I guess I was just too tired and didn't realize what was going on.

Yea, I haven't really touched this since. I think about it sometimes, but I beat the Divine Beasts, about 50 shrines, and I could go do Ganon but the bosses weren't exactly my favorite part of the Beasts...if the Switch had achievements I'd probably wrap this up, and I do find the Eventide/Master Sword challenges intriguing but...I dunno, man. Still really enjoying this, though now that I'm past 60 runs and still haven't beat Hades' second form even once I...feel gamer-shame. There's nothing more deflating than piling up the boons and feeling really good and then suddenly you're in a room that seems completely designed to fuck your current look all the way up.

---------------------
Otherwise, some random other stuff...

INJUSTICE 2: Played this coming off the lows of Justice League - now THIS is a trash story, man. I've really enjoyed Netherrealms' fighting game story modes, including the first Justice League, but I just have no idea what's going on here, and I feel like I'm only really catching a vibe with Aquaman, Blue Beetle and Superman. I'm near the end of the story but after the first round with Brainiac I'm really not looking forward to whatever bullshit Netherrealm cooks up to make him a classic MK-style boss fight. I might just be done since I'm not taking myself online.

DISCO ELYSIUM: Released on PS4 finally and I like what I see, unfortunately the menu system is completely broken right now and the game is, well, all menus. They announced a patch yesterday, hopefully it gets pushed through soon!

KENTUCKY ROUTE ZERO: Finally played Act V; wanted to kind of see how it might've felt to wait 2-3 years for that last installment. Was pretty much what I expected - super melancholy, super ephemeral, not much to it really and yet exactly what I wanted. Just like the rest of the game.

CIV VI: Still plays awesomely on PS4, FYI. Perfect podcast/reading the news game.

SHADOW OF WAR: Man is this game conflicting. It feels way more, like, pointless? Every story mission is just a tutorial for another mechanic, and on Normal the game is almost awkwardly easy until suddenly you come up on a guy with the right set of weird perks and the wrong number of projectile tossing assholes encircling the combat arena. I've put about 10 hours in and can launch my first fortress siege when I want, but the fortress' level is three times as high as mine, so...? The basic loop of "be an invincible elf-possessed weirdo" is just as fun as I remember from the first game, there's just so much MORE stacked on top I feel a little overwhelmed and misguided. Definitely glad this was a Playstation Plus game.

GREEDFALL: After my love affair with VAMPYR I've kinda been scrounging around for a low budget Euro-RPG to sink into and, buddy, this ain't it. The animation is awful, the combat is no fun at all and doesn't even hint at fun down the road, the city is a disaster of environmental design...I'm glad somebody somewhere liked this game but this was one of the quickest uninstalls I've gone through in a minute. I think I got an hour and a half out of it before I pulled the plug.

XCOM 2: Sort of like Shadow of War, it's the old game with more on top, and the more on top might just be too much for me? It also seemed a significant amount harder, as I was almost always one soldier short for an op with just barely enough money to buy a new one. I never had that much trouble with the first game, and without the sense of character progression I fell off after a handful of hours. Another Playstation Plus casualty, but this one's probably on me as much as the game.

RED DEAD ONLINE: On the plus side, it doesn't seem to randomly boot from the server every 30-60 minutes anymore, and there are actually animals to hunt in the environment. Imagine that! On the negative side, it still feels like you're never making any progress and it's not a great feeling to put 4 or so hours in on a night off and log off without any new guns, horses, clothes, jobs, ANYTHING to speak for other than having spent time in Rockstar's beautiful wild west. It's absolutely wild that two years later I still remember routes through these woods and mountains, it's a real testament to world building and all that but...it sure would be nice to feel like you were getting ANYTHING done (or if all this content were just duplicated into the epilogue of the single player game). I give this a shot every half year or so just to see if its finally for me, but this is probably the time I learn to accept if I ever want to get wrapped up in this game again it's gonna have to be a second playthrough of the campaign.

man...

i already miss these kids. I thought i was gonna jump right into Strikers, they leave you in such a place with the ending, i think i'm gonna have to take a break.

I guess next i'll tackle Tokyo Mirage Sessions before Monster Hunter Stories 2 comes out

Then i have Yakuza 0, Yakuza 7, and NieR A on the horizon

its gonna get complicated when SMT Nocturne comes out tho.

I imported the Aleste Collection and all these games are absolutely incredible. M2 did such a great job and its insane that they MADE A GAME. GG Aleste 3 is extremely fun and they even made a working game gear cart.

Also purchased a Gameboy Light, a Wonderswan, and a Neo Geo Pocket Color

the NGPC is so dope with the microswitches in the stick. More controllers should have microswitches.

1.0 dropped a little while back. i messed with this game in early access but it was way too chaotic for my taste. here is a short death segment from early access recorded on the first level of the game:

https://imgur.com/a/31B51iA

1.0 toned the chaos down quite a bit. it's a controlled chaos now. i think there are fewer elements and enemies on screen at once, at least in the early levels, so you're less likely to wander into a clusterfuck like in the above image. navigating downward through the levels is more consistent and frankly fun since you're not dying to entropy every 3rd run. it's still kind of tough to play with a controller as you can't adjust stick sensitivity and the aiming isn't always accurate due to projectile spread on the wands. the wand and potion mechanics are still not well (at all?) explained but the experimentation is part of the fun. it's enjoyable to throw some shit out there and see what happens. if you die then the next run is 5 seconds away. i'm enjoying it

persona 5 royal
------------------
this is replacing 2k19 as my stationary bike game because i'm tired of 2k CPU cheating even though i'm blowing every opponent out nearly in every game. just because i happen to hit 4 wide open threes in a row with bad shooters doesn't mean that the next wide 6 open threes from my good shooters should miss, 2k programmers! also, dame lillard running behind jaren jackson jr just after he released his previously wide open jump shot doesn't make that shot a lightly contested one!! that's not how basketball works!!!

i'm picking up where i left off: level 59 with mostly level 80+ personas going into the penultimate dungeon of the base game. i got over my optimization paralysis that caused me to drop the game previously and am just going to barrel through the rest of the game with my overpowered personas. i want to see how much damage my level 99 satan is going to do on the first enemy in the dungeon after some debuffs. the new story beats still don't interest me that much and i'm not going to s-rank the trophies or max out all my confidant ranks in one playthrough. i just need a new semi-auotpilot game to play while i'm exercising

trials of fire
-------------
yet another card game, this time with tabletop rpg style hex movement! the presentation is mostly good but some parts of the interface are severely lacking in polish. it seems like a nitpicky point but you do spend a lot of time in these ugly menus. the flow of the game seems fine. the matches are a little overlong but that might be due to me still learning the ropes. i like the idea of running three separate decks in each match and taking resources from one deck to bolster another. there is some creative stuff with movement and resource management in here. it seems like it will be fun up until just after the moment you figure everything out, which is fine for a game like this. i don't see much replayability in it like in slay the spire or monster train

civilization vi
---------------
i think i'm basically always playing this game. the season pass was a big ask of the audience when it was announced but it added a lot of variety to the game in the form of optional tweaks to stale mechanics like barbarians, unique units, and luxury resources. i do think a lot of this (paid) DLC kind of breaks the game. the basic strat of "oversettle, overproduce, win" seems to still be viable but there are other methods that are nearly as viable, which is a weclome change of pace. i'm working my way up to deity difficulty. watching potatomcwhiskey's yt channel did wonders for my knowledge of this game. i looked at some of my older saves and was astounded i won with such inefficient city and district placement. it's fun and challenging to use newly acquired knowledge to win games on higher difficulties in new ways

Thanks for the info on the Great Ave Attorney re-issues. I had no clue those were slated for a re-issue. The prior Phoenix Wright games still hold up to this day, so I hope these slate of games will pass the test as well.

Why are the Famicom Detective Club games going to throw your summer plans away? If I'm not mistaken, both games are slated to drop next week. Summer doesn't start until June, no?

The biggest tragedy is that they are the best looking games on 3DS and use the 3D really really well. Sad that most people won't experience that, but at least we get them in some form translated officially.

i mean all those games combined
i had planned on starting Yakuza 0 and Strikers in June
but there's no way i'm gonna be finished with MHS2, Detective Club, P3P, AND Great Ace Attorney in order to give Y0 the time of day

rogue legacy 2
----------------
a marked improvement over the previous game in almost every way. the art style is fully realized thanks to super hi-res sprites. sill handles very well although pulling an about-face and swinging your weapon is kind of difficult due to an advanced walk-backward-while-swinging technique. this sometimes gets me in trouble and ends runs, which is frustrating considering how good every other aspect of the controls feel. the progression system is still the linear difficulty curve where you get "better" at the game when you put more time into it so you can get more resources so you can unlock additional abilities and better gear. there is no way a normal player can beat even the first boss without putting significant time into the game to power up the characters and heirs. this is not quite what i want out of a rogue-like (-lite?) but for some reason the combination of good game "feel", enhanced presentation, and meaningful iteration and expansion on ideas found in the first game is working for me

bravely default 2
-------------------
remembered i had a switch and an hdmi cord connected to the docking station. this has become my stationary bike game. i'm only a few hours in but the combat seems solid. the borrow/bank turn system is neat (this is my first bravely game) and is a genuinely innovative take on turn based jrpg battles. the battle gameplay loop as a whole reminds me a bit of persona where you can blow through mob battles in seconds if you know what you're doing but boss battles require a carefully considered approach as bosses are exponentially stronger than mobs. i think i like this kind of battle design in jrpgs, or at least prefer it to having to slog through slow random encounters and then blow through bosses like in some final fantasy games. the job system seems good but i can already see that grinding for job points to unlock new abilities is going to be a chore. imo this somewhat defeats the purpose of a job system and by extension experimenting with it but i also don't know how you let the player not become instantly overpowered without gating access to abilities. not really a fan of the presentation. i think this game is limited in this aspect due to its 3ds roots and being on the switch. i'd love to see non-chibi characters that animate well in this battle system

dragon quest builders 2
--------------------------
free on game pass for the moment. i actually own this on ps4 but it's too clunky to be enjoyable due to the low frame rate and generally sub-par performance. on pc it's a zippy and rock-solid 60 fps. this helps tremendously when you're negotiating the finer points of placing items. i'm also in a unusual state of mind (for me) where i actually want to play a relaxing low-stakes game and this fits the bill perfectly. i'm historically awful at building stuff — why i generally stay away from the builder genre of games — but i'm going to try to plan things out and design buildings that aren't purely functional, going for more aesthetically pleasing creations. we'll see how that goes

street fighter v
-----------------
had to get a game that didn't end in "2" on this list. i can't play this game at the level i need to in order to be successful when i'm stressed out due to work or working towards relocating and looking for a new job. i have to pick and choose my spots. i used to have a rule where i would stop playing if i lost 3 matches in a row because i would just spiral out of control and go 1 for 10. i've reinstated it because trying to work through a losing streak is just not viable right now. the game is still a lot of fun when i'm playing well. i'm actually grinding out single hit (non-counter) confirms in training mode. it's taking a very long time to develop the muscle memory but there is incremental progress from week to week and i'm starting to incorporate them into matches, which is encouraging. i'm just a few solid win streaks from super diamond. master rank seems achievable if i grind ranked enough but i'm not sure i want to dedicate that much time to one game

on the one hand its nice to be able to play these all dolled up,
but a lot of the things i found arcane about the old games have been preserved unfortunately. A lot of instances require you to either keep selecting the exact same command to press more information instead of a scene just playing out, or having to exhaust every option on the menu for the game to progress the story. Its a bit more tolerable in the old games cause you can kind of explain them away as old game design, but in this modern package its just frustrating.

i'm enjoying it overall that said

2k21 is free today. usually they give away one free game/day for the duration of the sale. game giveaway generally starts off strong and wraps up weakly. also throughout the sale is an endless $10 coupon for purchases ≥ $14.99. some publishers cut prices to avoid this but most don't. i was able to get the following for under $35:

2k21 (free)
watch dogs: legion ($19.99 with $10 coupon)
spelldrifter ($4.99 with $10 coupon)
grindstone ($4.99 with $10 coupon)

i haven't had many issues with EGS. they are no steam but they also haven't been a storefront is as long as steam has. updates are regular, purchasing is painless, return policy is generous, and the library is increasingly robust

first game i've picked is Metal Slader Glory because i wanna build a really interesting visual novel type adventure game. The game itself is incredible. It feels like it had an insane budget (for an NES game) and the gameplay is like a much friendlier early Kojima game

i might come back and share some of my logs

I finished Control and then jumped into Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Just got through it a couple of days ago. I tried the Knockout City free trial (this game is super fun and very simple). I'm finally getting into Witcher 3 Wild Hunt and Hollow Knight. And I created another character for Monster Hunter World Iceborne.

As an aside...I really really hope they retool the online for Samurai Shodown. It's so horrible, but dammit if the gameplay really fits my playstyle. It's quite frustrating.

The new Virtual Fighter 5 remake will be added to the list, but I saw it doesn't have rollback, so I'm not too hopeful for that.

You're such pests...now, what is it you want? In your depths of your ignorance, what is it you want? Well, whatever it is you want, I can't deliver because I just don't see it. - Orson Welles

So I've had some recent living circumstance changes that have left me without regular access to my xbox, but I have brought out some old consoles and have them hooked up and working.

I'm currently playing through Super Maria RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars again. Just got the 6th star, will probably try and back track for the extra hidden stuff. I can't remember the last time I played this game, the nostalgia is real, I loved playing it as a kid, apparently it was its 25th Anniversary recently. Anyone else remember/play this game?

I remember saving up all my allowance to buy it ($70 or $80 back then, something ridiculous) and it still kind of crazy that Square and Nintendo teamed up like that

battle system was simple but fun, the story was very tongue-in-cheek but not in a cringey way, it was linear as hell (which I love, especially now that game design is just a series of unending tasks these days, that never stops...and all this is considered a good thing) and it had a great soundtrack. just pure JRPG goodness.

also, the ending parade is one of the most rewarding credit rolls in video game history. bonus points for the side-quest to get more fireworks.

I forget how expensive games were back then, I know I used to have to chip in buying stuff even when they were Christmas/Birthday gifts, but never really knew the prices. I do realize now that I don't have as many games on these old consoles as I thought I did, and a lot of them were from rental stores that sold the used copy off, got the Blockbuster sticker on them and everything!

That game design point feels really relevant to me too now, the most frustrating part of 'modern' game design is that all that stuff you mention is claimed to be in the name of replayability usually, but I don't feel like playing those games as much as I feel like playing these older ones over again. I completed the FF8 'remaster' on the consoles recently and wanted to play it again once I finished it, and never felt bored even in the most grindy moments of farming and just spending a whole fight drawing magic. rng is annoying too when there is nothing else that makes a drop 'meaningful' but it's rarity.

making Bowser and the Princess real characters, almost kinda humanizing them, still almost seems a bit weird but in a good way. and the new characters are so good. the world does feel a lot 'smaller' than I remember, but the world building was so good, and there's still stuff I need to go back to and secrets I need to try and find this time.

The addiction cycle of card collecting in Diamond Dynasty and catching up on podcast backlog is so real. That being said...

Playstation Now had that 99 cent discount for one month a while back, so I gave MARVEL'S AVENGERS a chance and that game really bummed me out. One, because the campaign itself was pretty charming and I really enjoyed the drip of new heroes and locations. But then the whole "endgame" portion lands in your lap with such a ponderous thud and leaves an awful taste in your mouth. The online connectivity seemed remarkably broken for a game based on teaming up with strangers to beat up bad guys - several missions where the map would populate with enemies, just not THE enemies you're supposed to fight in that specific mission. And it felt generally aimless in a way that was clearly modeled after Destiny 2, except the game also gets REALLY hard REALLY fast if you want to be earning loot at a rewarding pace so you're constantly paralyzed about what you want to do (and for how long you want to do it).

I enjoyed playing as Thor and wish it could've hooked me. Oh well.

I also sampled a few other games just for kicks and to test the streaming side of the service out. FANTAVISION was something I was deeply curious to interrogate my memory of - turns out, yea, that game is TRASH. Then I gave MX vs. ATV All Out a shot because I used to love those Off Road Fury / Jeremy McGrath games as weekend rentals as a kid, but quickly realized I just don't have the patience for that involved sort of racing anymore.

So I fired up WRECKFEST and, more than anything, it just made me want a PS5 so I could see that game in full glory. It was a blurry mess on PSNow, but surprisingly responsive and I was pretty impressed how much physics stuff was going on being beamed from that server farm to my PS4. I kind of wondered if the PSNow architecture is rooted in virtual PS4Pros at this point?

The big one other than MLB The Show has been DISCO ELYSIUM: FINAL CUT, which is basically a role play interpretation of Inherent Vice and a pretty damn good one at that. The writing is flowery in a way I've always been charmed by, the soundtrack is great, the art is eye-catching and the theory/politics driving it seem genuinely dangerous by video game standards (while not included in the final game, the Chapo Trap House guys did some voice work for the original release). This game launched in a nearly unplayable state on PS4 three months ago, and there's so much talking it's impossible to play with a podcast rolling or even for long stretches, but I'm really interested to see how the full game plays out and the amount of character customization seems so immense I could easily see myself playing this game every so often for several years if it sticks the landing.

I finally played my first full beisbol game last weekend. I've only been getting the achievements you can get from just playing the HR Derby. I lost 2-1 to the Rays because I haven't fully gotten my head around pitching and dude rocked my shit down the street somewhere.

This game is trying to take over my life lol. I've had two failed runs, started a third last night but had to go to bed. I hear the music in my head all the time, I'm usually thinking about it when I'm not playing. I'm definitely sucked in and hope I can figure out how to get a self-sustaining run going soon, so many factors to pay attention to and they never let you feel completely safe. Trying not to look up tips and stuff and just discover it as I go along.

roguebook
------------
yet another rogue-lite/like deck builder. this one seems really good. firstly it looks incredible. i love slay the spire like few other games i've ever played but it looks like dogshit and it's a miracle anyone can get past the awful visuals in order to get to the world class gameplay. (hoping slay the spire 2 gets artwork from magic the gathering artists or any great artists, really.) roguebook's visuals approach stunning and the gameplay that isn't far behind. i've only made a handful of runs so far but even this early in i've discovered extremely fun synergies and can't wait to try to recreate them later on with increased knowledge of the mechanics and enemy behavior. this game feels like the closest to slay the spire in depth, and that's saying quite a lot

devil may cry 5
-----------------
it's ok? another game where the art design and graphics are shockingly good. i was legitimately blown away by the character models when i first saw them. animations are amazing. enemy designs are a little bland but very detailed. backgrounds are well done but post-apocolyptic urban settings are kind of done to death at this point. the action in this game feels off to me. the pace of it and the dark-souls-adjacent commitment to moves is something i'm kind of struggling with. my bar for these kinds of games is bayonetta. this is probably an unfair statement. i am admittedly working with a limited data set here — played a little DMC here and there, and the ninja gaiden games but not much else in this genre — but i think bayonetta is the pinnacle of stylish character action games because it controls absolutely perfectly. i find myself struggling with the camera and dodging in DMC5, taking hits that knock me out of S rankings. i think once i get a better grip on how to not get hit and maximize style points, unlock dante, and finish the game so i can go back and attempt to S rank levels more easily, this game will be more fun to play

guilty gear strive
-------------------
dropping SFV for this. learning ky. ram was my main in xrd but she's legit broken in strive and borderline unfair. i don't like playing her. plus ky has cooler looking combos. i'm spending most of my time in the dojo training muscle memory for combos, occasionally jumping into the park ("casual" play) for matches. the game is pretty close to being good. i'm curious as to how the dev team plans on balancing things after explicitly stating that they don't want to balance it. i feel like i understand the thinking behind a "no balance" policy but ram and sol are completely busted and kind of not fun to play against even in the hands of novices. there were a lot of netplay tournaments run on 6.26 and 6.27 and watching high level play was utterly fascinating, even (especially?) with the game in its infancy. the teamsp00ky stream on 6.27 was awesome. ts sabin was hosting another tournament concurrently and a lot of those matches were good too. i highly recommend watching some of the netplay tourney vods for tech and increasing understanding of situational gameplay

monolith
----------
cool roguelite bullet hell shooter. not much to it but it's fun to play. good music. charming visuals. nice gameplay loop. good controls. it's a solid game to dump 30 minutes into every now and again

Still got a lot of side quests to finish but gonna put it down for now before I get too burnt out. It got me in the mood to get back into Hollow Knight, but unfortunately I forgot absolutely everything about how to play in the 5 months or so since I put in a solid 15-20 hours into it. Will see if I can get back into it and re-learn everything and remember what exactly I've done/need to do next.

That 100x combo was fucking me up for a long time, but I was able to zen out and get through it.

I was going to come here to sing the praises of the Black Panther Avengers expansion, but the checkpointing on the final mission is complete fuckshit. I either die too many times or fail some mission point because there's so much frame chug that I can't see what's going on.

Otherwise, he's the most fun character they've made, even over all of the originals.

The huge, very good Indie and Under $20 sales on PSN this week. Here's what I've touched so far...

DONUT COUNTY was exactly what it'd always been sold to me as: a quite funny, super enjoyable, very easy game you can finish in an afternoon and feel pretty good about. I'll admit I was hoping for some kind of challenge room sequence to unlock once the story was over, if only because it's about as satisfying to making things fall into a hole as any other mechanic in video games, but it was also nice to just sit with a thing, finish it and say goodbye.

EVERYTHING is a game that came out a few years ago as a PS4 exclusive but I think is now out on...everything? If you don't know, this can be as much an interactive screensaver as a game (and really isn't much of a game even when you're fully interacting with it) and the primary game (cheekily called the tutorial) can be completed in about an hour if you catch on to the basic flow of things, but the game is surprisingly well written and doesn't just totally rely on Alan Watts archival audio and cheeky art style to carry it. I was pretty impressed, especially at $2.99 rather than $14.99!

COFFEE TALK is a game that, for whatever reason, I've had an outsized understanding of as some definitive visual novel of the past few years...and after 13 Sentinels, I'm in the mood for another! Unfortunately, this game has a major issue with every character speaking in the same tone of voice, only filtered through some very, very stock personality traits. It's got very good lo-fi beats to chill/study to and an attractive visual design, but when the whole point of your game is the story and characters...it sucks pretty hard to have as amateur a feel as this game does. I will say, I'm impressed by how Absolutely Tumblr / Extremely Online this game is, but at that point I'm laughing AT the game, not with it.

WHERE THE WATER TASTES LIKE WINE is a game I realize I'm going to feel obligated to finish due to contributions from Austin Walker and Cara Ellison, as well as apparently dismal sales at launch that put the actual developers in a real dark place mentally and financially...but I can kind of see why this game flopped. Despite good, authentic Americana music, mostly great writing and voice acting and a stellar art style...the thing you spend the most time doing in this game is watching your avatar slowly saunter across a low poly map of the USA, either playing a dull as grass rhythm game to just barely increase your movement speed or just setting the controller down and reading an article. This, no hyperbole, SUCKS SHIT.

NIGHT IN THE WOODS I can tell I'll be a big fan of, but I've known that for years...which is why I told myself "why bother? you know you like it, no need to know exactly why!" I'm on day 3 or 4 so I feel like I've got a lot left to unpack, but other than the bass guitar mini-game (which I just can't tell yet if it's SUPPOSED to sound bad because Mae is bad at guitar, or...) I'm pretty hooked. Coffee Talk and WTWTLW have fundamental flaws that ruin the other good parts of those games, whereas this one seems to at baseline at least get everything to pretty good status.

GHOST OF TSUSHIMA is coming back in the rotation thanks to the new DLC, though I won't be playing that until the PS5 arrives...and, off the strength of finally giving the Legends multiplayer add-on a shot with my sister tonight, I damn well might just play that whole game over again (on NG+, Lethal+ of course!) this fall. It took a while to get back in the rhythm, and I truly truly suck ass on Lethal+ in a way I didn't anticipate (even though it's been over a year since I touched this game...) but the multiplayer is shockingly (shockingly!) good for a free trinket to the point I was legitimately sad when she said she needed to call it a night. This game is just plain FUN.

The rest of the lineup from the sale includes Scarlet Nexus, The Sexy Brutale, Zone of the Enders: 2nd Runner (which I've played several times, just never in HD), Dishonored 1, Dishonored 2 and Prey with all DLCs (I think this cumulatively cost me like $20 which is insane...sure hope I click with them!) as well as Yakuza Kiwami 2, Yakuza 6 (still need to fit 3, 4, and 5 in there somwhere...), Bully (this'll be my 3rd time trying to click with this game - you're welcome, Rockstar!) and Ruiner, which I just remember looking very cool during a Giant Bomb Quick Look years ago.

Oh, I also got Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle Deluxe on Switch for $20 as something to lay and play hungover or going to bed. It's fun in those little bursts but hasn't totally sunk its teeth in - I wish it had more of that XCOM meta layer, or that platform had some kind of trophy system. Oh well!

I know some people have their issues with the UI and figuring out if they're installing PS4 or PS5 versions, but I don't have many dual entitlement games and the ones I do have seemed easy enough. Mostly, I just love how smooth it makes older games run. I don't need to go on any more in this thread about MLB The Show or Civilization VI, only to say it's weird to see a game I've put thousands of hours into over the past four years suddenly running at 60/4K and actual HDR, or in the case of Civ having a new game loaded and launched in less than a minute (it takes about five I wager on PS4). Anyway!

PSYCHONAUTS 2 has been the big one. I fell off a bit playing on PS4 just because the load times could be a real drag, and it can be hard for me to play such well produced games with a ton of dialogue when I'm falling behind on podcasts. That being said, insanely clever level design, super thoughtful and funny writing/vocal performances (especially a lot of the incidental dialogue!) and once I got it running on PS5, everything literally looked a generation better and the load times were nearly zero. I don't even think they put out a performance patch for this machine? A pretty clear contender for GotY for me so far, even with some quibbles about iffy platforming and fairly weak endgame combat.

RATCHET & CLANK: RIFT APART was always going to be the test case for PS5, and it mostly didn't let me down. It's not hamstrung by a movie tie-in like 2016, but the writing is still VERY for kids and didn't always charm me as much this time. Or more to the point, I found I could ignore the performances, throw on subtitles and not worry too much about the plot. Guns also aren't as inventive as past games, and I thought the environments got more bland as the game went along while enemies reach their variety limit about halfway through the game - honestly, I thought the game was OVER just as it was getting started. I goofed around on a harder difficulty in a NG+ and the Omega level weapon upgrades are already way cooler than anything in the base game - I can never decide exactly how I feel about that...I guess I sound kind of down on it, but goddamn were the haptics in the controller great and R&C games have such a baseline fun factor to them I guess I just wanted to be WOWED more than I was.

NBA 2K22 I bought because, despite despising the franchise for most of the PS4 run, it's tradition to break in a new console with 2K. I really like the way the game feels on the court for the first time in years, though I'm struggling with all the new systems and animation priorities. I also still REALLY want to like MyTeam considering how much more I like basketball than baseball and how much Diamond Dynasty I play, but it just feels too much like a casino. I also can't get over how embarrassing 2K's online performance is at this point - I played an online game with a fantasy draft squad and the final score was fucking 12-23 with five minute quarters, with a 2-3 1st quarter, because clearly neither of us were expecting the shot meter to be so dramatically different from offline. It was comedy. Sounds like the Franchise mode is pretty fucked up right now too, but hopefully that's fixed by opening night so I can play along with the season like I used to on PS3. I wish this franchise would get good again.

DESTINY 2 is absolutely overwhelming and I don't think I'll put much time into it, but I just had to see how it ran compared to hours and hours (and hours) of time on PS4 and, yup, this game hums now. Almost makes me wish it was my first hours with the game rather than several hundred in so I wouldn't be so confused by all the new stuff and could take it in stride. Oh well.

I gave up on SCARLET NEXUS, COFFEE TALK and WHERE THE WATER TASTES LIKE WINE. The former just got too tedious and far, far too animé trope-laden for my tastes, though it had some of my favorite enemy designs of the past several years, not just this year. The latter two just, I dunno, aren't any good despite one or two aspects deserving high praise.

Getting back into RED DEAD REDEMPTION II's story mode, it's wild to play this at such a high framerate with true HDR. I think I'd mentioned giving Red Dead Online another shot once or twice in this thread, it's nice to have the hardware incentive to finally start chugging through the main storyline again and not have to worry about all the microtransaction, vacant open world sadness that is RDO and I can just reappreciate the stellar writing, performances and in my honest IMO gameplay of the base game.

I think I've been talked down from the DEATHLOOP hype for now (especially with all those other Arkane games suddenly lingering in my backlog) as the player base seems considerably less hyped than the critics. I'm really crossing my fingers I can resist DEATH STRANDING DC this weekend, I really hated that game's story but there is something oddly relaxing about its sound effects and delivery management systems, and of course it's a graphical juggernaut. I'm really curious about this KENA BRIDGE OF SPIRITS game dropping in a couple hours, but I did also just play two platformers side by side so IDK about another...

Monthly gaming data dump over!

Maxed out Black Panther in Avengers. Not much to really do until Spider-Man drops. Though, I’ve heard that there won’t be any story content, just an added character.

Got 2K22 pre-ordered and installed. Just have to wait a few more days.

I downloaded the OG Psychonauts from Game Pass and I wanna get through it before trying the new one.

In the meantime, I’ve started Arkham Knight over from the beginning. This is my 5th play through.

I’m actually liking the “one more quest” feeling of MyCareer in NBA2K22. It a lot to get used to other than playing games. I’m glad they’re not forcing playing park games like last year.

Did you get an email from Sony saying you could reserve to get an email notifying you to buy a PS5 directly from them?

If so, this is exactly how I purchased mine roughly a month ago.

Got the PS Direct message on Monday saying I would have access on Tuesday to make a purchase. I might’ve fucked up by doing it on my phone, but I didn’t want to do it from my work laptop. The site was slow, so I tapped/clicked Add To Cart, then it would give a message like “You can’t add more than one console to your cart”.

Long story short, I got to the point of Submit Purchase, just to get a message that if I didn’t get a message from PS Direct, I can’t purchase a console right now, when the link was the only way I could even get that fucking far into the process.

The next time I get the message may go slightly smoother because now all of my payment info is stored. Another issue I had was that iOS Safari wouldn’t let me type my CC#, so I lost time trying to access the site in Chrome and get back to the checkout process.

Sounds like it was a browser compatibility issue for sure. I ordered mine at work on my cell phone. I think is used either Firefox or the Brave browser. No issues at all.
