Playing the Switch version. It's actually really cool that you can go through the whole game in 2D, but I'll probably be leaving that alone for a while.
Loving the auto battle which really speeds things up and makes grinding less tedious. Also really like the ability the move around in battle, even though it doesn't affect turns or defense at all, it still makes things a lot more exciting.

the 2D mode to me is more of a 2nd or 3rd playthrough thing. its a TOTALLY different game
the party AI is also really really good. Also uh, make a beeline straight for Erik's dual wield.

100+ hours and it's still engaging, but
SPOILERS
I'm not a fan of the time travel part, yeah I get that it opens the game world up, but it really cheapens the impact of a certain character's death, and all that stuff and character development that happened after the tree's fall all seem pointless now. Not sure if the game addresses this after you fight the true final boss.

i have heard the same thing from others and i absolutely get the feeling. but it does do something with it in the end
honestly its just a matter of the game itself being so good and that they manufactured this script for what is legitimately a videogamey post game with all the post game video gamey challenges that it feels like an 'Act 3'. Personally i was so happy to have them back, i really didn't care
i don't wanna spoil it but if you make it to the end, they put a decent little bow on it in a way that only a DQ game can.
Didn't realise you were meant to use the Sword of Light against the final boss, spent around an hour and kept getting KOed. It was a breeze after I used it. The ending was cool as a celebration of the franchise. Still not loving the time travel aspect but the amount of things to do made up for it.
Highlight for me was finishing all the sidequests, which includes beating the final trial of Wheel of Harma. That was ridiculous. Romancing Jade was cool too.
